Reviews of Asheville Municipal Golf Course
Rick Carpenter
1st of all the staff is really helpful and flexible, I don't know many places that will let you change from 18 to 9 holes on the fly, especially so affordably. Golfwise, the difference between the front and 9 and back 9 is substantial in a fun way. Awesome golf spot
arock wilson
Great golf here. Fun course. Did get caught jn hell of a storm but not they fault. Got rain check on back 9 !!!
Joseph Schultheis
Course was overcrowded and overall not maintained very good. Poor job of combing groups and pushing slower groups along. Thankfully I only paid for 9 holes as I would have never gotten 18 in. Lastly, the course plays way shorter than the scorecard. Most greens on the front 9 are drivable.
Reggie Simelton
Old facility, old course, but a delightful experience to play. Most greens were in great shape, but some others need improvement. Excellent staff to get you headed out for fun. Looking forward to improvements that are expected with new ownership.
Matt Timmons
Having played many Donald Ross courses I was excited to play Asheville Municipal GC during my visit to Asheville for a wedding. The good was the people and staff being quite nice and friendly. Good prices. Wife and I teed off early on a Saturday and finished in around 3:40 (had to wait on last few holes). Greens were in good condition (mostly) but sad to say that overall course was in very very poor condition. Really a shame as this is a classic Donald Ross course and the back nine is, in particular, a classic DR design and layout (many similarities to Manakiki in Cleveland, Ohio). I would hope the city would see the light and invest some serious capital in this landmark.
Todd
Nice little course, fun round.
Coach Creed
I will continue to support this course because their hospitality is second to none! As a golf coach it’s been very hard to find courses that will allow you to practice. Pat is easy to work with on all fronts. Thanks to Muni! Thanks to you my golfers have a place to practice and fall in love with the game of golf!
Stephen Westervelt
Great place. Do not follow Google directions to the pro shop.
GOOGLE AND WAZE ARE WRONG IN THEIR DIRECTIONS. At the intersection Of fairview and Swannanoa river road go LEFT.....not right as the directions tell you. Take rhe left at the gas station, and then your following right and its .6 of a mile straight to the clubhouse.
I did not play the course as their 63rd annual Skyview tournament was in its final day.
Nice practice chipping and putting green behind the clubhouse that is open to the public at all times. A kind gentleman from the cart barn came over and gave me putting instructions that helped my game tremendously ( the tip of your shoes and shoulders should be perpendicular to the break point. I was just adjusting with my club causing massive inconsistency in my accuracy.
Famous course established in 1927. Its almost 100 years old. The course is in a fundraising mode to redo and redesign the draining on both front and back nines. As the drainage is original and there are tons of house built around the courses edges that change the draining profile. they need to complete this massive project, but anything 100 year old needs some love.
The greens are humped and flowing, incredibly challenging but rewarding. Speaking to other regulars they confirmed the greens are all in good shape on all 18 holes.
Lastly no driving range on property but there is one 5 miles down the road that is decent. That range is not mind blowing but everyone comments its satisfactory.
Pro shop was nice and helpful. Would be a 5 with a driving range but its 100 years old. Prices are Great for the Asheville area, and the elevation changes on the site rival agusta...I swear to God its that impressive.
Went on July 14th 2022

Love this place. Come all the time
However this is a constant problem. It is always over crowded. At times it’s so bad once I had 8 other carts in front of me!
The front 9 is easier then the back. The back has a lot more boundaries and hills. The greens are taken care of mostly and the price is extremely fair. I would recommend this coure to visitors however if you can afford it, go somewhere nicer. I think that you will be also impressed by how much time you will have fun.
James West
Love this course my hometown favorite and the Fairways are in Great shape the Greens are awesome gotta hit it straight and love the challenging course ....Kudos
Nikiyah Trejo
They have good deals. The front 9 are cleaner then the back 9, but the back nine is almost majestic. Definitely worth going.
Michael Hill
This is a classic Donald Ross design where I learned the game of golf and have played the course for 32 years. Everyone I have met through the years has been helpful and respectful. The course was actually featured on The Golf Channel a few years back.
The course is a tale of 2 different sides. The front 9 is flat and wide open and welcomes your driver on all par 4s and 5d. The back nine is tighter, has lots of elevation changes, uneven lies, and you have to think your way around. Right now, 6/25, the greens are challenging, fast, and in excellent condition as they are preparing for The SkyView Open tournament in July. Do your best to stay below the hole cause downhill putts can go screaming past the hole and off the green.
Sadly, the course is not maintained as it deserves to be considering it's a Donald Ross design. Most tee boxes are scarce on grass and not level. The fairways are thin in spots, and a couple on the back 9 are almost unplayable. The cart paths are in serious need of repair. You have to watch where you're going or you might bounce yourself out of the cart!
The staff I encountered were very friendly and accommodating. The starter, CY, is an extremely funny guy and knows customer service. The other starter, Baxter, is a genuine gentleman and very interesting. These fellas willingly took me under their wings and taught me a lot about golf.
If you can find a discounted tee time and aren't expecting private club conditions, give "Muni" a chance and you just might find yourself having a great time. It's a good place to meet some mighty fine local people from all walks of life!

In my experience Asheville Municipal Golf Course is typical of most city run courses I have encountered throughout my life. Courses such as this are maintained only to a somewhat bare minimum standard. The cart paths have more holes then the South Bronx in NYC and the fairways, tee boxes and greens are maintained much to an uneven and substandard level. The clubhouse in addition is somewhat bare bones in character. Most full service fee courses in the area certainly offer more appealing options in this respect. Despite all this, the cost of play here offsets any negatives I may have experienced. Most public courses in the immediate area are anywhere from 30 to 40 percent more in cost for a round of golf. For the occasional golfer such as myself the overall playing experience at Asheville Municipal is fine. The course provides a more then adequate visual and playing experience for both my age and level of golf ability. If you don't expect too much, then you too will find a round of golf here to be worthwhile.
Ross Bower
Very subpar golf course. Not maintained very well. But cheap and not crowded
Will Walker
Pro's: Very friendly staff, cost, greens.
Con's: Very poor maintenance of fairways, rough had not been cut in a long time, tee boxes in terrible shape.
Sad that such a historic course is not better cared for.
David Evans
Enjoyed a nice summer round. The front nine was a little moist, the back nine was fairly arid. Like two different courses, in a good way. Short and open but I somehow lost a few balls. Not their fault.
Tommy B
The front nine of this course is very flat and wide. Not a very typical mountain course to start off. Fairways and greens and not very well maintained but for $38 for 18 holes it's not bad at all. Very wide open and forgiving so it's a great place to work out that hook or slice you've got. Back nine has more of a rolling and mountainous feel.
David Tilton
First, the course itself is a great value for the price and the condition. I honestly didn't know what to expect playing here for the first time, and knowing it was a muni. I was very pleasantly surprised by the conditions. Fairways were cut nicely and well kept and the greens rolled true...and fast enough to provide a challenge.
The reason the rating is only 3 stars is because of the starter. We told him our group were all about 10 handicappers and he told us we had "no business playing from the blue tees," which for their tips, are under 6,400 yards. He also threatened us about playing slow because we insisted on playing from the blue tees. He said "there are a lot of groups behind you and you better not hold up the course." Meanwhile after three holes we had caught up to the twosome in front of us (we were a group of three), and no one was even within 3-4 holes behind us the entire day. I don't care if this guy has been a starter at this course "for years," he was extremely rude. If yo don't want people playing from 6300 yards, don't offer those tees.
James Cowing
We have visited Asheville a few times, but this was the first chance to take in nine holes of golf. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The front nine we're wide open and the fairways we're in good shape. The greens had just been airated, so it was hard to judge the speed. It was a sunny 64 degrees and we had a great time.
Tyler Hurd
Muni is truly a spectacle. Have played this course hundreds of times and will play it hundreds more. It could be considered an Asheville historical monument… where legends were born. Anyone posting negatively about this course just needs to head right back home to Myrtle Beach or Florida.. the staff are phenomenal, the hot dogs will shave two strokes off your back nine, and it is all and all a phenomenal experience. I love it… 🥰
Wesley Allen
I frequent this course a lot during the summer (and sometimes in the winter if they are open). It’s a very good value and the course is nicely laid out. You can golf the front nine if you’re looking for nice open green-ways, or take on the winding back nine for a little more of a challenge. All in all it’s a great course at an unbeatable price.
David Medlin
Asheville municipal is a good course for the average golfer. I would give it 5 star but tee boxes on back 9 are in bad shape. The staff are always so nice.
Dean Piercy
I just like this golf course, the front 9 is basically open and flat while the back 9 gives you hills and rolling fairways and blind tee shots, a all around good course to play.
Nelson Alvarez
Needs work specially on the back 9.
Craig Willingham
Fun course that is very flat and open on the front nine and tight and hilly on the back nine. Cart path only right now and some standing water in places but not bad considering the rain here recently. Greens are in great shape. Slow play is only drawback. Very crowded on Saturdays!
Donnie Watts
Friendly staff nice little course but the answer service not I've never prepaid and I'm not giving my card number over the phone and especially to someone that can't speak English
Mark Newton
I love golf and the course isn't bad. However, their greens are a little rough. After all it is fall and getting cold out. In the summer it's probably more kept up. The price a little high to play here too.
Michael McManus
Wonderful old Donald Ross Muni course. Front 9 is flat but the back is hilly and very tricky. Bent grass greens were very true. Tees and fairways were a little shabby but it was great fun for $40 green fee/cart.
ginnismc
Not a world beater but for the price it's what you can expect. Oldest public course in NC. Two distinctly different nine's. Front is more wide open and flat, back is more hilly and wooded. If you're looking for cheap, easy round, look no further.
Victor Heymann
In the past i shied away from this course due to it's condition but this past year it has become a very fine and well maintained course. It is pleasure to play and the staff is always friendly and welcoming. It has become one of my most favored courses in the area. highly recommend a play there
Nathan Houghton
I thought the staff was very friendly and the price was right if you book online. When I played it, the fairways were in rough shape, but the unique holes on the back nine made up for the course condition.
R Stubocca
As far as I can say, as one to have played this course for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised! Fair pricing for the maintenance and challenge that the course offered. And, with booking a tee time for two, on the interwebs, I got a discounted rate! VERY PLEASED...'nuff said!
Judge
Little rough around the edges and this reflects the greens fees!
Ronda Richley
Nice people but the course is not is very good shape. No tee boxes--most were in the fairway. Burnt out greens, and very rough fairway conditions.
William Prendergast
Best "layout" in Asheville as far as variety, shot selection, having to execute and I have played them all. I don't know if the City of Asheville and the type/level of player this course normally gets appreciates what they have; an "un-touched" Classic Donald Ross Golf Course. If you are a student of the game and low handicap player, this Course is a must!
Ethan Albright
Perfect course! Light on the first 9 holes, and a little more interesting on the back 9. Definitely give it a “shot”!
Angela Crawford
It was a great day out there today, not to hot or cold, best part today I played 18 holes with the same ball, that's great for me.
Teddy
It's a classic course, but they are having difficulty growing grass on the back nine. This makes the 10th hole unfair unless you can hit a high draw with your driver 275 plus yards.
Tex Mobley
Front 9 easy not to much trouble back 9 has tighter fairways. To expensive for a municipal course, some tee boxes are tore up.
Kevin Ward
Still winter but needs some work after the flood but all things considered was nice greens were great.
Sarah-srose Rose
I used to love going with my dad golfing here when i was a little girl, my favorite part was always being able to drive my dad around the entire golf course in the golf cart and i absolutely loved every minute of the good quality father daughter time that we got to share with each other and got to make memories that will never be forgotten and always cherished by us both
Matthew Harden
$15 to play 9 holes, good price. Public corse so not best maintenance going on.
Jack Hellums
I LOVE this golf course it has a great price for 9 or 18 holes and has i nice clubhouse i would reccomend for anyone with any skillrange. I would hope that this place has better matenence but the price makes up for it
David
Course was in pretty good shape for January. Greens was fast but true. Pace of play was really good.
Sally Cormier
We had the best day playing here during our Hurrication from Dorian. Shot my lowest score 76. Fun little place, nice greens.
Greg Rhodes
Great little Golf Course owned by the city maintained by the city well kept and they do have carts you can rent the prices are definitely reasonable
Naomie Moore
Beautiful Muni golf course. Better than most. Get a cart if long distance walking is not your thing. Fair rates too.
Shane Bradley
If you want a nice course to play with friendly staff I recommend this course. It in good shape. The greens are fast and it's layout is good.
Jennifer Ware
Good price for a public course. The front nine are kept better thank the back nine. Fun course with some challenging holes.
Christopher Krupp
Fun old time golf course. Front and back nines are completely unique from each other.
Front is flat, back is quite hilly and wooded.
Allen Horton
Course in decent shape. Most greens are above average. Nice course overall. Enjoyed the round. Guy behind the counter was a jerk.
Alan Chronister
Good layout , front nine a good warm up to get ready for some tough play on the back nine..good challenge...
eddie smith
Great course in excellent shape..a repeat issue every play is the slow play. They need a Ranger to stay busy to push slow play
Graydean Laughter
It was really crowded and slow. Need a ranger to speed play. Greens and fairways in pretty good shape.
Brooklyn Welch
The course is not well taken care of.
Ben Erickson
Extremely well maintained course. Only complaints are that we couldn't share rented clubs, each person had to have their own dedicated set which was expensive
Laurie Richardson
Got paired with some ladies travelling across country playing golf courses. It was a great morning at Asheville Municipal!

William Klauss
Great course. Very challenging on the back nine but will definitely play again.
Darius Cooper
It was mine and my buddys first time playing here and we had a great time. The staff was attentive and helpful.
Mort Stein
Back 9 is awful. The greens were being worked on . .should notify golfers in advance. Would not have played there
Trent Thomas
Historical Donald Ross design...course is kept in reasonable condition and is very affordable. Very convenient to anyone visiting Asheville NC
Mark Hall
A great place to play golf if you're looking to hit a few
Chase Walker
Donald Ross design in decent shape for a muni. Reasonably priced green fees and snack bar, friendly staff.
Ronnie Major
Reasonably priced game with or without cart, but the grass needs some attention in several areas.
Mike Honeycutt
Not the Messina course, but it seems to be well maintained and there's always golfers on the course.
Chris Barnett

Enjoyed both days. Back nine will give you a run for the money but it's wort it.
Jim Cope
It's a classic Donald Ross design although it doesn't receive much funding from the city budget so ya get what ya pay for.
