Reviews of James Turrell's "Twilight Epiphany" Skyspace
Made a trek via public transportation from out near airport to visit this art installation. (if you know Houston- that’s a feat!) …it was completely worth it. Arrived shortly before dusk. Nice intro from art student/volunteer docent. Not too crowded; plenty of available seating on top and below. Pictures cannot do it justice. It was beautiful to watch & tranquil to enjoy. Very cool experience for sure.
A very meditative experience if it were not for all the 50 or so tourists. It gives a very peaceful and reflective ambiance and I was so impressed and amazed walking through Rice to witness this kind of natural-yet-electronic sculpture/pavillion. The lights are much prettier when you view from the outside or sitting in the lower level of the structure, not the top.
I love this space on the Rice Campus. There was a decent sized crowd on this pleasant evening. Why a 4? First, there was a crane parked on the lower level, taking up space and diminishing the experience. Second, there wasn't much of a light show this evening (changing colors), which is odd given it was free museum Thursday and I suspect it's a nice way to cap the evening. Of course I will return and bring out-of-town guests.
The light show. It was magical. It was majestic. It was magnificent. Contrast the artificial lighting vs natural lighting. The light show was mesmerizing. As I stared at the darkness outside and the light inside, they became one.
It’s magical if you don’t know how it works and believe in the hypnotics light changes during natural sunset and sunrise. Turns out it’s lit by 256 LEDs with very smooth artificial light transition. So this show really can be played anytime with light contrasts but less effective through the aperture (open sky hole) of course. I guess this is the type of disappointment you get as a kid grows older finding out Santa Clause is not real. Still worth a visit to observe the sublime color changes and pay the $1/10 min parking. 😆 Bonus: super romantic for couples to sit on the benches upstairs or picnic on the grass.
Stumbled across this when we were staying in the area. We were there for sunset, light sequence was awesome against the clouds and lightning in the background!! There were several people there enjoying the quiet and meditating. Parking available along the street. It’s quick and easy to stop in and stay for a short visit. If you go to the website that’s shown when you are reviewing this location on the map it will show the best times to arrive for your visit!!
Beautiful! Bring headphones and listen to something you like to hear. People don't know how to behave. They talk and cough and are just rude. This art installation is worth seeing.
Diner en Blanc Houston Texas, Secret Location James Turrell's Location IN 2022. It was a perfect night, for a perfect event. The live bands, the violinist was fantastic, the dancers were magical, the people were exquisite, the food was enjoyable and EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING was PERFECT. What a GREAT Time, around like minded people.
Unique place to visit in Houston. The art piece is pretty big and it’s really cool that you can sit inside and underneath. We stayed to watch the sunset - the art changes colours so it’s nice to stay for a bit!
Amazing art structure, the parking was easy (there's only one that I saw underground) there isn't anything else there, only the structure itself. Pretty cool tho!!
Beautiful experience. Worth staying to the end when the light contrast was the most intense. Experimented with chill trance, Gregorian chants, and Debussy in the headphones. Debussy was the best. Also visited the Moody Art Center and downloaded the Rice University public art app to check out some of the public art on campus before and after the light show. Recommend that too!
I really wish I got to see it lit up. I think the lights were off due to COVID. Parking was easy. There's free 20-minute parking at the lot directly under the installation. The ticket machine was out of paper but you just use your credit card to get in and out. The elevator takes you directly in front of the exhibit. Might be worth a visit if you have nothing to do and you're in the area. May be a 5-10-minute visit.
A beautiful tribute on the Rice University campus. This installation involves light, the outdoors and nature, and when available, music and concerts. Really, you have to go see it when it’s back up and running for light shows that desk. Or even an eventual concert so that you can hear the sound reverberate with Godly intention. If you’ve never been, you’ll love to go back every time after the first. Great for a date.
Beautiful, hypnotic, timeless. I’ve seen Twilight Epiphany twice and it was worth it both times. The first was at high noon and it was worth the visit. The second visit at twilight was incredible and beyond my powers of description. All I can say is if you are in the area, make sure to see it.
This is a good space to experience beauty and reflect.
It can get noisy at times.
Keep in mind this concrete public art installation is in the heart of Rice University, and was acoustically engineered to host musical performances as well as to act as a laboratory for the Shepherd School of Music students.
That being said.
Some visitors come and quietly enjoy the slow-changing spectrum of LED lights, while others go to meet up and socialize.
Still a wonderful structure.
Still worth visiting and seeing for yourself.
Thank you RicePublicArt.
A lovely, calming experience. I had briefly checked some reviews before coming to the sunset show with my hubby and parents (who were visiting houston for the weekend), so didn’t really know what to expect. Parking is $7 in the visitor’s lot next to the stadium. It’s an easy walk from there. We all very much enjoyed it! The sky really plays a key role in the light show. As you get immersed in the changing lights, before you know it the sky has turned a deep, dark, sapphire blue. Minimalist lines and clean colors in an immersive experience. I highly recommend it! Btw, some reviews said there was music but we did not hear any.
Truly like nothing you've ever seen or experienced before. The colors are dramatic and create a beautiful contrast to the sky, and the slowly changing nature of the colors helps to change your perception and how you see the space as it goes. If you think staring at the sky for 45 minutes would be boring, than think again!
It’s quite, well lit, and a great concept. The chairs on the lower deck were perfect for sitting and looking up, and the lights weren’t overbearing to the point that you needed to squint. Just the right amount of softness to it. The nice thing is that you don’t have to stay the entire time, and can come and go as you please!
This piece of artwork is nestled away in a greater piece of artwork which is Rice! There is a garage right next door where you can park and do yourself a favor and wander the surrounding area before settling in to enjoy the peaceful tones of the twilight epiphany. You are promoted to register online, but there is no need as you can just show up. Also there is no official start and end to the show - it is just the subtle changing of light and the contrast to the changing hues of the sky as it transitions from day to night.
This art installation is one of the most interesting art pieces I’ve ever seen/experienced.
The way the lights changing completely tricks your mind into seeing the sky in different colors is truly surreal.
It’s a little tricky to catch the light show at the right time, but it’s absolutely worth it. Although it’s more difficult to drag yourself out of bed to see the dawn lights, I’d highly recommend it. There is something so uplifting about starting your day with so much beauty.
It is in an overrated place. However, considering it is a free tour, it is worth visiting for beautiful pictures. The monument is fascinating. It seems that during the night, you can enjoy colored pictures and have a different experience. The place is inside the Rice University campus; you can pay for a parking lot or try some few that are free.
It's a really mesmerizing sight, especially in the rain. Nice place to just relax and watch some lights. Sometimes they have concerts, I hear, so that's pretty cool.
They only have the lights on for about 30 minutes during sunset I believe, so just take some time out of your day to just sit and breathe, meditate maybe, with a very fancy ceiling.
I saw a rly cute couple just sit and watch the lights change in the light rain, looking up while leaning their heads together... If you like people watching and lights, go here. It's so nice. It's also on the Rice campus so I'd definitely recommend just visiting, it's really pretty and has nice people.
Definitely worth the trip! We can’t wait to go for a sunrise!
A neat sunset experience. A docent gives a brief intro and then you sit and gaze upwards enjoying the changing sky and accompanying light reflections. Takes 45 minutes, is a silent event, but you can quietly converse with your company. A relaxing unique experience to try with a date or family.
Good: Free admission, interesting changes of colour (when the structure is illuminated in the evening), simple and minimalist architecture
Bad: Many visitors thanks to the free admission, hard to take a photo without any people in it, presence of construction cranes in the background (when looking westwards)
This art installation is so cool! it’s in the middle of Rice University and car parking is right next to the installation.
This. Was. Incredible. If you’re on the fence about doing it, let me assure you, you should. I’ve been for both sunrise and sunset sessions. They had different vibes. I found the morning to be very meditative, calming, and solitary. The evening was more crowded and felt more vibrant and about closure. Bring headphones. You won’t be disappointed.
We absolutely love visiting this space for sunset. It’s a magical experience, especially with a good playlist to enjoy.
Love this spot on rice u campus. Nice to check out when the weather is comfortable at dusk, when the light is on.
It gets pretty busy. I usually just stop by for 5 or 10 minutes. Take a few pics and sit down a little.
Visiting from out of town and we heard about it. It is cool and it's interesting to look at ....but I don't know if I would ever go back. Looking through the sky window and seeing the color changes is interesting, just not compelling.
Pretty wonderful. The campus is gorgeous too, if the weather is nice would tour the campus grounds before visiting the sky space.
Interesting piece of art. I'll have to bring my headphones with me next time and figure out what mixes with the light show.
Kind of interesting, but surrounded by too much metro stuff to really be the best experience.
Beautiful bit of architecture, and a great place to sit in quiet reflection.
It may be named for twilight but the absolute best experience is the dawn. Watching the world slowly light up as the lights fade and change is mesmerizing, meditative, and peaceful. Highly recommended to bring a playlist and a relaxed mind set.
Amazing place for resting, relaxing, or meditating. James Turrell is the best artist of our epoch.
I found this just by Googling some off-the-beaten-path kind of experiences to do with my family while they were in town. We didn’t know what to expect but we all ended up really enjoying the meditative and relaxing light display. Something different to do but very cool overall!
Wonderful place to think and ponder or just to enjoy. Amazing views.
This was an interesting experience. Not really a "light show" in the modern sense. You are seated under a large white ceiling with a square opening in the middle. Different colored lights are projected onto the ceiling and the contrast between the colored ceiling and the night sky produces some interesting effects. It was not crowded when we visited and many people left after a few minutes.
Nice place to hang out... The view of downtown is superb at night..so recommend going in evening time..
Worth a stop if you're in the area, synchronized light and music display at sunrise and sunset.
isn't it beautiful ? Rice University is open campus so you should visit and see the campus and this peacful place :)
Each time we visit Houston we attempt to see something new. This time we visited Skyscape. I will truthfully say, I could not find the thrill. Lights reflecting off a ceiling in 90+ degree weather is not my example of a good time. Perhaps I am just old and cranky, but I observed couples younger than I leaving far before I did. Sorry! Skyscape just did not do it for me.
Not really sure what the purpose of this place was. Didn't really have anything to offer here. Place was relatively clean though.
Beautiful Art in the middle of Rice University. Park on the side street on front of the Skyspace , since the parking lots ask for too much money.
Love the ambiance and the peaceful feeling it invokes.
Nice place, the light display was a bit disappointing, so do not have big expectations
Amazing space to take in the day. A Houston must-see spot if you’re visiting or if you’re a native and haven’t been yet.
Nice. A little pretentious but overall pleasant. Probably better with fewer "urban youths" so I'll try again when they're in school.
Come see this place at night when it is less crowded. Very quite place and nice. Go before when lights shut off
Pretty cool place to see the at dusk.
I am giving this a 5-star because it is a must-do especially on a cloudy windy day. But small improvements could be made to make the experience so much more satisfying. A docent came in just before "showtime" to let people know it was a quiet space with no phone, camera, or video use allowed. Then she exited and stood way away from the structure on her own phone and did not monitor the chaos that ensued during the experience. Too bad. It is a contemplative place that should evoke the quiet hush of a library. The whole experience was interrupted by a person calling for their dog over and over and over and over as this is in a big green space area (this probably cannot be avoided). And then 2 different groups of young (under 11) girls ran around with 2 of them face-timing loudly. Then a person brought their dog inside the structure and proceeded to call it and play with it. No one seemed to notice people quietly and thoughtfully looking up. An inexpensive installation of signs at the 4 entrances indicating it is a pet-free, phone free, camera free, quiet space will help people know what the space is for. I don't think most of these people were rude...they just had no idea of its purpose. It is an amazing experience that would be greatly improved with a tiny change.
An excellent venue for an evening light show. Very peaceful.
A very nice place to visit especially when your trying to relax. I love coming here in the morning and catching the sunrise. The way the color and the sky mix makes you appreciate it more. It also makes you feel grounded especially when you hear the helicopters from the nearby hospitals. You cant help but wonder what happened and what caused that issue. Really makes you step back appreciate everything.
We just happened to come here during the 2017 Spring Equinox. It's recommended to get reservations earlier in the day, but probably not necessary.
There is no cost other than parking. If there's a game, plan on arriving at least 20 minutes earlier than the 15 minutes before sunset start time. That said, I thought the later phases of the evening light was visually much cooler with the contrast
There's plenty of seating on both levels and people matriculate out. I enjoyed the top level better with the city skyline views and University views.
Very cool, unique, and free thing to do in Houston, especially of you've been on your feet all day.
Amazing sky viewing visual experience, the light is magic, a special place
Definitely a great experience! The sunset sequence was awesome against even a grey and cloudy sky. I was too cold to stay for the whole thing, so I'd recommend a blanket if it's supposed to be cold. Food, drink, and photography are not allowed inside, except water. Check out the other James Turrell installations around Houston too! This one gets the most attention but there are other worthy ones as well, like the meeting house.
Right inside Rice University, this is a lovely serene zen space, specially when there is no one around, perfect to contemplate and meditate, day or twilight, surrounded by gardens and fountains; too close to the medical center so there are some construction cranes that spoil the clean lines and serenity of the place.
James Turrell's design is very minimalist and simple but enhances all elements perfectly.
I will come back at sunrise or sunset to see the light show.
Visitor parking lots available or street parking if you do not mind walking 4 blocks, it is healthier anyway. 😍
this thing is really cool but the rest of rice uni sucks
Went at sunrise ot was okay.
Pretty cool place ..worth a look
This place is awesome. Relaxing environment. Great place to start a date night
There’s an underground parking garage located very close to the piece so it’s actually very accessible. I highly recommend anyone visiting Houston to check out this experience from different angles. It begins about 10 minutes before sunset.
It takes a kind of mind to enjoy this. Not your usual attraction or thing to do. If you want to have a peaceful and a whole lot more beautiful and soothing transition from dusk to dark, you can give this a whirl, and still, it may not float your boat.
Surreal, beautiful. Did not imagine how much it would touch my soul. The show times are sunrise and sunset
Very peaceful when no one is around
My wife surprised me with a date here last weekend. I didn't know what to expect but was surprised to find I really enjoyed the space. We are not "art" people per say, but this was a beautiful sight to behold as the clouds drifted by and the colors faded into each other. This is a great date spot or place to go by yourself and reflect.
When the sunsets, a light show begins to play, and soon, you're breathless. This is truly a remarkable place to go on a date with someone. It's free, romantic, and awe striking. Turrell created a remarkable art space that looked simplistic, modern, and was able to take the viewer outside of their body for an experience that embraces light itself. To find out when the sun show starts, check their website and there should be a count down on there.
If you haven't checked this out once in your life, you should! The pictures are amazing. The vibe is suppose to help you feel zen-like and even for you to meditate, but sometimes parents bring their children that will occasionally run around and make noise. There is a student volunteer that is there to answer any questions and before the twilight begins, she gives a brief intro. You aren't suppose to take photos underneath the skyspace, but you are encouraged to photos of the lights changing once you've exited the skyspace.
This is literally one of my favorite places in Houston. During the daily Sunset light sequence you will feel so calm as you stare at the sky framed by James Turrell's Skyspace. This space is unique because it also doubles as a mini concert hall, but I have not been so lucky to attend one. There are many different ways you can watch the light sequence: on the lower level, on the upper level, on the floor directly under the cutout, or even from afar. Each experience is very different. Visit during the Sunrise sequence for less crowds. You can also make reservations, but usually it is not necessary.
Tip: You can park in front of the music building for a fee, or just walk from your nearest free parking lot.
This is one of the best places to sit inside and have.l quality time and meditate. Only cost is few bucks for the parking. Great University buildings gives the young something to hope for.
This is one of my favorite spaces in general, and certainly my favorite at Rice. The sunrise and sunset shows are beautiful, but the real magic is going there in the middle of a warm day to take a nap or sit and think
Suggest taking a cushion for the straight flat concrete bench seating. Back is angled but still hard, and waiting for the sun to reveal it's exquisite colors is a slow process. Worth the wait!
I don't think I've looked forward to his much the last few years as I have going to see the Twilight Epiphany skyspace.
I took my grandson Durham because I started talking to him and teaching him about astronomy and astrophysics when he was very very young as it is one of my passions. Unfortunately it's closed until February 16th but you can still visit the actual structure and even with the the light show not available that evening it was truly a sight to behold and I cannot wait until February 16th I'll be there either sunup or sun down so come join me and let's experience the combination of great architecture and nature in symbiotic Harmony
It's always nice to just sit here and see the changing colors of the architecture
Neat thing to do if you like artsy things.
One time visit.
I guess it is best if you get the first floor seats. The second floor does not give the complete view of the rectangular area.
Very Serene. It’s a must visit if you love public art installations.
Amazing minus the golf cart parked inside the artwork!
LOVE this place! Was taken here after a surprise dinner and it was so cool. The colors were amazing and the people watching was just as colorful. Must do!
The seats are not comfortable at all but if u bring a blanket and pillows and BUG SPRAY. U can enjoy a nice chill session on the lawn adjacent to it.
Must be experienced
Go with an open mind.
Totally worth it to see the piece at sunrise. It was magical. I'm a big fan of Turrell's work, and this was a unique and beautiful piece that didn't let me down.
A quiet calm place to enjoy the sky while u sit bck n relax
This is the spot for a romantic date for art lovers, or to impress guests visiting from out of town. Book online before you go. It's free, but you need tickets.
Place to be quiet
What an iconic landmark from a legendary light and space world reknown artist!! I recommend the evening daily light show.
Need to be more interesting. Some soft sounds and more interactive things would make it a bit more fun and peaceful
Good place for photos
The lights did not show any effects
Wondrously captivating. $5 parking in the underground garage.
Spaceship looking place, super cool at night with lights, even better when there is live music!
Transcendent in time and space. Allow one to reflect.
If you get the opportunity to go here, it is a wonderful experience. It is open for sunrise and sunset. Spectacular.
Amazing spot. We need more James Turrell's art throught Houston! He's a great Artist.
A must see for one of America's most bold artists. Great vibe and easier to get to than Rodin Crater!!
This is a thoughtful and unique experience. Very interesting and relaxing also in a meditative kind of way. Beautiful.
Not much to do besides admirate the art piece, expensive parking and not that incredible to see since is only one big piece of art where you can sit and talk
Beautiful structure that looks even more beautiful during the light show at sunset!
As far as I know this is the only Sky space that was built as a musical performance venue. Amazing, a must see if there is a performance on.
Haven't had the luck to see the light show , but is always a beautiful place to visit
Have been at dusk, but can't wait to go at dawn. The experience proves to be memorable, take someone you love!
So peaceful. So sublime. Make sure you go for the light show hours
beautiful especially if you go at sunrise or sunset 🌆 🌅 🌇 🌄 …
Pretty rad art.
Sunset was cool.but kids where running everywhere. Maybe sunrise would be more peacful.
Nice relaxing experience.
Show up even if you don't have reservations. Lights last 45 minutes, and most only stuck around for 15-20.
Genius blend of nature, architecture, and tech. I experienced the gradients of a sunset like never before
Amazing art installation. Would recommend bringing headphones to listen to music and enhance the experience <3
Interesting place to hang out.
My hubby took me for my birthday after dinner. Cool, calm, beautiful experience.
Thought it would be maybe a little boring & that we’d leave after like 15 minutes but it was actually really chill/pretty and 40 minutes passed before we knew it.
It's a cool light exhibit but beware of talkers that could potentially spoil the mood
Beautiful space.
Great place to checkout ! Amazing light show to have soothing effect on your mind.
I love this place. It’s very unique, aesthetic, and calming- minus the crying babies of course.
Stunning piece at dusk. Look out for the free student guide. Take some headphones and zone out.
This is my favorite place in Houston. It is a gem and I don't want to share it... but it's a must-see at least once.
I throughly loved our sunrise visit to this installment at Rice. It's quite stunning.
A great piece of Art.
Great experience!
Liked the experience! Cool colors! Took some awesome pics!
Fantastic. Very cheap, nearby underground parking too.
Amazing. Plan your trip at twilight.
One of my favorite places in Houston. Visit at sunset and the experience is very moving.

A wonderful meditative experience
Beautiful at sunset

Went there with my then girlfriend... Witnessed a marriage proposal!
James Turrell really is a genius. Part of his Skypace series
Couldn't see the lights on cause maintenance :(
Amazing. Go at sundown.
Happy to be there with my best friend and soulmate.
First time to see it worth a trip if your in the area
If you appreciate art , must see .
Saw it during the day. Gotta go back when it's dark.
Relaxing, good to just lay back and enjoy the sunset
Don't think the show is on during holidays.
Beautiful and incredibly peaceful place
Had alot of fun with family and friends
Really awesome light show.

Nice art for a university
Really neat experience, but be warned it's 40 minutes of watching the sky. I can imagine some attention spans not keeping up.
Parking not exactly convenient since it's a university
It is a spectacular art installation which only changes color at sunset. They are minutes that are worth it and that you can enjoy in a meditation or simply contemplating a masterpiece
One of the best spaces I have visited in my life. It is a total experience to see the play of colors between the light of space and the light of the sky. The lighting changes color, only at sunset.
Wonderful experience. Peace is breathed and it is a good time to connect with your interior. Beautiful and simple construction of the pavilion with a nice combination of lights and the sky at sunset. Very nice work inserted at Rice University (school of music sector)
It is currently under renovation, we will have to wait to see it in its splendor
Lovely
See nice place!
Unique experience is essential
Work
