Reviews of The Rookery Building
Sara Beth Wade
Just popped in to see the lobby - as did others, so don't feel weird about it. Beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright lobby! There's so much light and the stairs are beautiful. Make sure to turn around and see the cantilevered ones over the entrance. Worth a stop in.
I was able to pop in even driving through and found a street parking spot less than a block away. And make sure to poke through the options - the meter will make it look like you pay $7 or nothing, but I was able to only put 15 minutes on it for about $1.50, so don't be fooled.
Mimi Snook
Tourists can enter the first floor lobby and review two poster boards describing history of the building and the remodels. A pillar is exposed without the marble facade to show the original designs. Beautiful!
CherryBomb737
Chicago’s architectural history perfectly preserved! There are walking tours available of the interior spaces including Burnham’s office space!! Photos are allowed without flash. A must visit for any architect and history chasers.
Tim Lam
What a stunning building. I’m thankful they allow for visitors to take in the beauty of this place. The second floor isn’t open to the public so you won’t be able to explore the suspended stairwell.
Dr. Ratna Chaudhary
Impressive building from 1988. Beautiful marble engraved with Gold on walls and floors. An architectural marvel for its beautiful staircase
Dejan Braki
The Rookery building is considered to be the first skyscraper on which new materials and engineering were implemented, which pathed the way of building high rises we see today. Therefore, it was high on our list to visit.
However, our visit turned out to be a big disappointment. Pretty much, my impressions are the same as the fellow traveler below.
After an unwelcoming greeting of the front staff you're allowed to visit only the ground floor (the famous staircase cannot be seen from there). We tried to book a tour, but the office was closed with no info. There were other tourists as well, who left the bldg the same way we did - disappointed. It appeared to be a 5 min visit.
Christy Roebuck
I would highly recommend going when the FLW Trust is doing tours of the Light Court. We got there right before the building closed, so the FLW gift shop had already closed for the day. There was a little information about Frank Lloyd Wright's contribution, but not much. We were able to walk around the lobby and take pictures, but couldn't walk on any of the staircases. It was gorgeous, but some more information and context would have made the visit better.
Jenne Holmes
The oldest skyscraper still standing in Chicago incase you didn't know. It's also incredibly beautiful and if you are a Frank Lloyd Wright fan this is an added treat to any Chicago trip. I highly recommend taking the Frank Llyod Wright foundations tour of the building as it includes entry into the library where the world trade fair of 1893 was created.
So much history and architectural history and beauty all in one beautiful building.
Misael Andrade
I recently went to do a photo session. I couldn't stop admiring the infrastructure. One of a kind.
Eric Beach
A must see in Chicago. The best tour is offered by the Chicago Architecture Center.
Rachel Green
this is a special building, originally built by Root and Burnham, and spectacularly renovated by Frank Lloyd Wright 25 years later. FLW brought light into the atrium and updated the stairways, among other things. the building is lovingly maintained and is a real treat. go on Monday or Wednesday to see the library!
Thomas Pilarski
Very beautiful building inside and out especially the lobby. If you visit take your time and read the history of the architecture of the building on the inside .My personal opinion it looked nicer before Franks Lloyd Wright rehabbed the lobby.
Kevin
Historic, classic Chicago School architecture. Designed by Burnham and Root. Lobby remodeled by Frank Lloyd Wright. Chicago architecture at it's finest. A must visit on your next architectural tour... even if you've seen it a dozen times.
Michelle Krueger
Stunning FLW building. If you are lucky enough to take a peek inside when the doors are open, I highly suggest doing so. You can walk in, take a look around and take a few quick pictures and that’s about it but it’s well worth it to see this unique building. They don’t allow professional photography (wedding pictures, etc.) but phone pictures are okay.
Nino Arobelidze
Tremendous space with unbelievable history! It’s not often that you get to visit a space like The Rookery to play a live concert yet it happened- Sofar show nonetheless. Suddenly this somewhat intimidating space became endlessly welcoming and warm. I’ll never forget this night
imtiaz ahmad
Amazing display of architectural design. A must see place if you are visiting Chicago and like architecturally splendid structures.
The place also offers guided tours. There are usually very few people in the place. This allows you ample time to focus on different parts of the building.
Jamie Barth
This is a stunning building, beautifully preserved and restored. The intricate details offer a wonderful contrast to the more sleek and austere lobbies in many of today's commercial offices.
It was a real treat to learn the history of the space and make the connection to other Wright (and Burnham) designs. The docent was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic, really enhancing our experience.
Sy Guzman
Take a tour of the Rookery by contacting the Chicago Architecture Foundation's website. A place to visit for Frank Lloyd Wright and Sullivan fans. Wear comfortable shoes. Be sure to visit the library on the 11th floor of the Rookery for additional historical facts.
Red Barker
Beautiful, charming very well maintained historical building. Really worth a visit for the architecture, story and experience.
oscar diaz
Rookery is a beautiful place if your looking to splurge on a wedding. The design is unique and it’s an excellent place to show off to people how amazing this place is!!!
Iris Griselle Ayala
The most beautiful and elegant place to celebrate one memorable moment. Super elegant, historic, like a princess stories place.
Wade Brooks
One of Chicago's architectural gems.
Diego Fdez. Torres
A must see in Chicago. The interior stairs are amazing. And the details in the columns, redesign by the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright, a treasure. Don’t miss the elevator doors. Otis Elevators state of art
Lisa Ham
If you are going just to tour the lobby on your own, make sure to check out the information posters located beneath the double spiral staircase to learn the history. Just imagine, that beautiful atrium skylight was once tarred over and now it's been restored! The man at the reception desk was very friendly and welcoming when I asked to look at the lobby. Thank you.
Elizabeth DeZouche
A "must see" for any Chicago traveler. This historic building houses a roof designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and has a gift shop inside. The roof was covered in tar and used for parking at one point but has now been fully restored.
Mary J
A beautiful building! Unfortunately only the lobby is accessible to the public, but a guided tour will take you up to the 3rd floor and up the iconic staircase. Tickets can be purchased from the Frank Lloyd Wright gift shop for $10, and it lasts about half an hour.
Ryan Gaveske
Really amazing building renovated by Frank Lloyd Wright. Unfortunately I was there over a holiday so want able to take the tour.
Victor Manuel
When I read Devil in the white city, I heard about this building. It is impressing and so elegant! I loved it! OMG!!! Super amazing architecture. What catches my attention is the architecture of this place. Some pictures are uploaded. Really recommend this place if you love architecture.
Jim L
Stunning architecture. The first floor is open to the public and tours are available.
Monica Lacy
If you love architecture, history, and Frank Lloyd Wright... this is a place for you. There are guided tours of the famed D-spiral staircase (one of my favorites) and other architectural aspects.
Wilson Yeung
10/10 recommend doing the architecture tour!
C L
The historic Rookery Building at 209 South LaSalle has the most amazing atrium. It was originally designed by Root and Burnham (as in Burnham Harbor) and redesigned by Frank Lloyd Wright. You have to see the ceiling and the Staircase to the Sky. The only way to get to the mezzanine to really explore is the one weekend a year in October when the Chicago Architectural Foundation hosts Open House Chicago.
Paulino Montes-Solla
Historic office building located into The Loop de Chicago (209 S LaSalle Str.).
The building has an amazing skylight using prodigiously the light and ornamentation to serve as the focal point for the entire building, and provide daylight to interior offices.
Andrea Bird
Absolutely beautiful venue for a wedding. Frank Lloyd Wright designed. The event staff was professional and efficient.
Kitty G
Beautiful, historic building has many interesting appointments and gorgeous light court. Tours every weekday.
Fahd Nait Ali
Beautiful architecture but unfortunately only the ground floor was open
Gina Rossi
Definitely in my (unofficial) 'Top Three Favorite Chicago Buildings' list. If you're in the Financial District, you absolutely MUST pop in just to look at the atrium alone! Classic Chicago architecture.
Designed by Burnham & Root in 1886 — Light court remodeled by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1905. Twelve stories tall, it is the oldest standing high-rise in Chicago.
Janelle Lake
The harp sounds fabulous for cocktail hour here!
Iliya Petrow
Truly a hidden gem in the city of Chicago. It has the most amazing spiral staircase I’ve ever seen. Chances are, you’ve seen a picture of them at some point. I haven’t done the tour, but it is on my to do list in Chicago.
It’s hard to get in if you’re simply trying to get a look at the stairs. But if you’re inconspicuous about it, no one will say anything. If anything, sign up for the tour!
Alex Demas
Really enjoyed the tour of the building, all the little details and stories were fantastic.
Myles Wilcoxson
Historic and beautiful office building.
The elevators work and are quick, staff is friendly, and common building spaces are kept clean. The higher floors are nice and quiet and offices receive a good amount of natural light.
Most of the amenities are marketing. The "partner gym" is $1300 up front + 140/mo. The rooftop patio and Burnham library are locked 24/7.
Robert Tracy
What a beautiful building. If in town you should have a look!!! Enjoy
Améya Ramdurgkar
An absolute bliss for the amateur indoor photographer. Make sure to call up before to ensure the guided tours are available.
Nora Carria
Beautiful space with great descriptions of the changes that have happened over time.
Dennis Theile
Beautiful place to have a wedding. Don't let the outside fool you.
Demet Ürgüp
Very pretty building, but you are only allowed to stay in the lobby. However, they may have some guided tours upstairs.
Tanzim Rachana
I work here. It’s majestic, a must watch for tourists! The hallway and stairwell is timeless!!
Amy Bryan
Positively incredible building! Amazing architecture everywhere you look! The tour was awesome - lots of fun little facts! If you are ever in Chicago I highly recommend you take the tour and see this breathtaking building!
Casey Adams
Take the time to make your way to the financial district and tour the Rookery. In a city where great architecture is always front and center, the Rookery does not take a backseat.
Lenci Willis
Amazing architecture. A photographer's playground. Frank Lloyd Wright tour was very informative.
ThuHang Tran
Highly recommend the Chicago Architecture Foundation tour that gets you inside the building!
Vicki McGlinsey
I wish we would have had more time on the tour to spend in this building. It was outstandingly beautiful. You walk in the front door and it's like stepping back in time. So much attention to detail. My husband and I were both absolutely Blown Away. Definitely intend on going back next time we're in Chicago sightseeing. A must-visit for any trip if you love architecture and beauty
Rick Deshone
It's worth seeing if you enjoy art and architecture. The building is in need of some repairs, but the space is inspiring.
EstherSylvia Firlej-Perisin
The Rookery is one of Chicago's art deco jewels.
The original design was by the legendary firm of Burnham & Root from the 1880s and an interior lobby renovation was then executed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1905. This early skyscraper is notable not only for its architectural pedigree, but also for being the oldest surviving high-rise in Chicago. It got its unusual name from pigeons and ravens nesting on the building that used to stand on the lot where the Rookerie was built. On the 11th floor is a stunning library. Taking a tour (from Chicago's Architectural society) is worth while for any visitor or Chicagoan interested in the city's history and art.
Catherine Rogers
A stunning example of iconic American architecture.
Joseph K Bagel
Here's the upshot: You must like architecture. The building was done in 1888 by Burnham and Root, two very famous architects. It served as their offices. The building has both a steel frame and load bearing walls. In 1905, the lobby was redesigned by Frank Lloyd Wright, yet another very famous architect. It is worth seeing. Please do that.
Sam Sukumar
Beautiful heritage building.
Definitely worth a visit.
Savannah Harrington
I currently work in this building. It’s well known for its history and architectural beauty.
However, it’s also an awesome place to work! Rozelle, the elevator gal, is so sweet. She knows many employees names, if she sees me carrying a lot she’ll have an elevator ready for me.
The Rookery staff, including Nicole, are so helpful and always go above and beyond for tenants. A central location close to great places.
Arpad Petrass
Well Worth the short tour. If you love Frank Lloyd Wrights Architecture you will love this brief tour of the building that discusses the origins of the original build and Wrights remodel over it. It is only open for viewing from the lobby since the upper decks are for offices . The tour allows you to go up their famous staircase.
Sharyn Meffin
Amazing building inside. Hard to get a sense of it outside at present except for the brown sandstone as there are major Reno's going on. We went there as the meeting point for an architecture's tour of FL Wrights buildings. Highly recommend a visit and the tour.
Graham
Beautiful building!
Mollie Gordon
Our daughter had her wedding in this exquisite space. A perfect, intimate space. Highly recommend.
Brian Popek
Love the movie the Dark knight so I had to go to it's filmed location
David Hitztaler
My Dr. DeLee takes care of my eyes. He is a great person. Professional. A friend. Thank you Dr. DeLee and staff. Love ya's forever ❤️
Danley T
We got lucky to be there when no one else was in the building (except a security officer). Went on a Saturday morning about 10:30am.
Gorgeous design and construction, what can I say?
Security officer was super nice - offered a brochure and answered some of our basic questions.
Andrew Plock
A quick look at a lobby with a huge amount of history. Great to see different decades of style and tastes that have come together over the years, especially for those into anything Frank Lloyd Wright adjacent. If you're in Chicago to see all of it's wonderful structures and architecture, it's an easy spot to hit.
Odysseas
Absolutely stunning. An architectural marvel.
Jordan Lee
Can't see much without a tour. Also a wedding rehearsal made photos difficult.
Michelle Chen
Beautiful historical interiors. The Frank Lloyd Wright tour is worth taking part in.
Amy Tropp
If you a fan of architecture, Chicago history, Root, Wright, granite or steel, this is a must see. The rookery is in a key location, and the oldest tall building in Chicago. It weighs a lot, but its steel and cement floating foundation has barely settled, in spite of the fact that it was originally built on a marsh. At one time this building provided the most inspiring, and light filled views in Chicago. There is also a nice little gift shop.
Dan Frosaker
Another fine example of why Chicago is such a cool city to explore on foot. The outside of this building has all sorts of great detail work and it would be easy to check it out and just walk on by, but the central lobby is not too be missed. Go on in and see for yourself. You won't be disappointed.
terry pernsteiner
Absolutely spectacular! Frank Lloyd Wright renovation is truly beautiful but under the facade of the lobby is also revealing of the grand Victorian era.
Route 45
Nice 30 minute guided tour. The building seems deceiving from the outside which is dark red, but inside it's bright and expansive. The 19th century's history is interesting and apparently iit wasn't too many years later (1905) when it was influenced (updated) by FLW with lots of windows on the ceiling and white and gold marble to reflect light.
Henry Winter
The Rookery is a must-see for any fans of the history of architecture. In one place you get to see the genius of both Burnham and Root, and Frank Lloyd Wright. The outside highlights the beginnings of the use of steel and glass in construction, and the inside uses the light from a skylight to illuminate a white marble common area, which is beautiful. Be sure to take a formal tour as they take you to areas unavailable to walk in guests. For example, Burnham and Root's office library. Anyway, I loved the building and the tour, especially as the tour guide was most knowledgeable.
Jay Brockway
The Rookery is a beautiful architectural masterpiece and is impeccably maintained. The interior lobby's glass ceiling creates a bright open atmosphere and the white marble walls with gold patterns carved in them reflect the light all around dispelling shadows. Individually placed tiny tile pieces compose the floors mosaics pattern adding color to the room. A second story stair case projects over the lobby before disappearing above the glass ceiling.
Luke Wolbrink
Cool architectural gem in the city. Once the headquarters for the famous Daniel Burnham the atrium is gorgeous and the iconic stair is worth the walk. Unfortunately security is tight so you aren't going far without being invited by one of the businesses inside or on an architectural tour.
Sammy Chung
We took the tour and it was well worth knowing the history of this amazing building.
Kivanc Kose
Inside the building looks amazing. Must see place in the area.
La Alba
Very nice building 😍 …
Jonathan Douglas
Beautiful example of restored 19th century architecture with more modern Frank Lloyd Wright renovations. The light court atrium is mesmerizing just to look at, filling the entire space with bright sunlight and a feel of real airiness. A definite must-see if you have a few spare minutes in the Loop.
Diane Ringenberg
What an excellent tour! I want to go to Oak Park on my next trip. Once I have mastered the L Train. What wonderful building there are in Chicago. Once there I went into several other buildings on my way back to the hotel. Wright was creative in his time. Love his work.
William Hunt
I came here for a wedding and although I can't say anything about things actually in the building the architecture is wonderful and the wedding was beautiful. This is a must see on a Chicago architectural tour.
Paul Samford
Fun to take a step inside and see this amazing building.
Emma Langham
Beautiful building, definitely one of my favourites in Chicago. You can explore the lobby for free or take a 30 minute tour of the 2nd level from the Frank Lloyd Wright gift shop.
James Murray
No picture does this space justice. Absolutely beautiful. The main lobby is accessible, but not the upper levels. Would have loved to walk up the incredible staircase.
Mike Spendlove
Highly recommend visiting this historic first skyscraper of Chicago, built soon after the fire. If possible do the tours around lunchtime run by the Frank Lloyd Wright Trustn to see the upper staircase.
Kim Montenegro
Call if you want to take the tour. The gal in the gift shop was a wealth of knowledge.
Bartosz Bodzon
I didn't book a guided tour, but if you are in the area Rookery Building is definitely worth checking out, due to its unique architecture. You can enter and see lower floor for free.
Jeffrey James
The Rookery is a must-see for architecture aficionados. This beautiful building's lobby is a sight to behold and is a wonderful example of craftsmanship and detail that simply no longer exists.
Sara Stefanini
I love it! A 'must see' in Chicago.
Karen Bailey
Frank Lloyd Wright design. Beautiful
Jerry Cole
This is one of Chicago's most revered historical buildings. An architectural gem that was originally Daniel Burnham's base of operations. The lobby is not to be missed, but only open during the work week.
Nathan Davie
Stop in and check out the lobby if you are walking buy this building. The history is fascinating and the architecture is stunning. One of the most interesting buildings in the city and that is saying a lot.
Neil Cooper
Another great stop on the search for untouchables movie sets .but what a beautiful building
roma mukhopadhyay

Kraii Studios
A true historic gem! This Frank Loyd Right building is a muat-see for every architecture enthusiast. You cannot simply walk into this building by yourself. If you want to be able to go up the iconic stairs, you must book the official guided tour. You can however walk into the foyer, just not up the stairs.
Wolfgang Pagel
You can smell the History of the building. It was amazing to have a look inside. Great
Eileen Priddy
You have to stop in- even if just to see the Frank Lloyd Wright designed lobby!
Kenneth Kasten
Super cool place. The interiors are a great example of Lloyd's work. A must to architects. Too bad you can't go upstairs.
Eric Campos
I feel though not many people know of the beautiful rookery building when traveling to Chicago which is unfortunate! It's such a delight to the eyes I recommend anyone to simply walk in and gaze at the architectural wonder.
James Kaufman
Great architecture!
Walter Levy
An architectural pilgrimage and World Heritage site, combining the original vision of two of America's most influential architects - Burham and Root, and Frank Lloyd Wright. Do not miss this gem!

An exceptional piece of architectural history and a beautiful part of Chicago’s heyday growth.

David Fertig
I work in the building. It has nice clean public amenities. The inside atrium is great so all offices have natural light. The staff have been very friendly.
S. Bustoz
It's a beautiful building, aside from being a historic building, the concourse lighting is soft and makes the building feel peaceful. I love waking through it going home or stop on the shops in the building
Katie Galvin
A Chicago architecture classic. A must see if you're into architecture. Has a little Burnham, a little FL Wright; it's great
Martín Zimmerman
Home to Burnham and Root's offices when they were planning the famed White City. Beautiful exterior and even more beautiful, glass-roofed lobby, which has been restored to a renovation Frank Lloyd Wright completed some years after the original construction.
irwin levinstein
This is a hidden gem. We stopped in because the exterior was so unusual. Much of historical and architectural interest. Built shortly after the great chicago fire (Mrs oleary's
