I am so glad I found Gmel Driving Academy! As an adult (female, mid-20s) with no previous driving experience, I was nervous, but Gilbert was incredibly patient and encouraging. From day 1, I never felt unsafe or uncomfortable, even when navigating circles or other tricky intersections. He was able to calmly help steer when needed and offered helpful tips and answered all of my questions along the way. His step-by-step approach to parallel parking made it easy to learn. Scheduling was easy, and a HUGE plus that he is able to pick up so you don’t have to travel anywhere. Gilbert is very personable and kind and made sure to take a break halfway through the 2-hour lesson. After 12 hours of lessons and practicing around the test center on the day of the test, I was able to pass on the first try! I enjoyed my time learning from Gilbert and would highly recommend Gmel, especially to adults who are learning for the first time.

I had fun learning driving. Gmel was the first driving school I went to in the US and I was able to pass my driving test on my first attempt. As many reviews indicated, Gilbert is patient which helps create a very comfortable learning environment, communicative when you make mistakes and very knowledgeable which helped me learn fast. I first came to him in late September 2021 and our lessons stopped around November of that year. I only had 5 lessons spanning throughout my Saturdays throughout this time because I had a busy schedule as a student working 9-5 and it was all I could pay for at the time. He was very accommodating which is something I loved so much! Even in those 5 2-hour lessons, I had learned so much!!! I learned so much that when I finally could get more lessons in January 2023, it was like riding a bike, I swear!! I still knew what I was doing despite not having the opportunity to drive until our previous lessons (My mother and other family members refused to let me drive without a driver’s license). So, me and him were both shocked that I still could drive well but now I know it was because of a great teacher!!! He teaches in a way where the movements of driving and the correct things to do eventually become automatic the more lessons you do. Repetition is key! He also gave me a video to watch in order to give me a step-by-step guideline to parallel Park This was very helpful for me as I learn better with steps and I am a visual learner. He was up to date with the current standards and tests that the DMV area gives, so during our lessons, he made sure to put in time for me practice parallel parking because he knew they would test me on it. He would tell me exactly where I went wrong so I can try again and be aware of my mistakes. He even taught me how to bring the car closer to the curb without getting out of the parking space!!! This man deserves all of the flowers in the world!!!! After 3 lessons in 2023 he told me i should be ready and I doubted myself of course. I was very anxious. However, he encouraged me to be confident and I would tell him everytime he dropped me off, “I am confident!!” He taught me life lessons all in 8 driver lessons. Be confident and also have the practice to back up that confidence! I told him that even if I didn’t pass he would get 5 stars because his teaching is immaculate!! However, I DID PASS, of course, ON THE FIRST TRY, thanks to his teaching 🙂 & when he learned I passed, he was outside of the DMV to give me a big hug!!! 1 MILLION THANKS TO THIS GUY!!!!!!

Update - I wanted to say another thank you for such good driving lessons! Your tips are still helping me and I feel like such a safe confident driver. I had a positive experience using Gmel driving and think it’s more affordable than many in the area. Thank you for helping me pass my test! I worked with Mr Nelson at first then Mr Gilbert took over - both were professional and friendly instructors. Mr Gilbert has a way of listening to you even when he does not immediately respond and making sure he answers your questions; he gave me good tricks for parallel parking and the like. Also accommodating with schedules. He can be quite firm when correcting repeated mistakes or a risky move, but I took it as constructive teaching. Overall a great school and I recommend!

I’m grateful to Mr Gilbert, because I do not think I would be able to obtain a driving license without his excellent lessons. Since I had a bad experience with another school. He teach very well and knows how to explain it well to the student. He always corrects you when you make mistakes gently, he lets you learn from your own mistakes but never discouraged, very encouraging and this is very important. Good motivator. I had a terrific experience with Gmel Driving Academy and strongly recommend it! Gilbert is a calm and insightful instructor who helped get me from no driving experience to getting my license in just a month and a half. Gilbert puts his client’s needs and interests first and is very flexible to make sure that they get what they need. He was happy to set aside time and reschedule things as needed. To Gilbert, it’s all about the client and helping them become the best driver possible (and in the time frame that they need). Similarly, I wanted certain kinds of instruction and practice not on the road test that Gilbert was happy to give me lots of time with (e.g. highway driving at various times of day/levels of traffic). I had a fun time driving around with Gilbert and found his instruction incredibly helpful. I was quite nervous when we first started (being an adult with no driving experience at all), but within just a few lessons I was already feeling very confident on the road. His method of instruction is very much just letting you drive and commenting only where needed to assist and improve your skills. He answers questions politely and thoughtfully. Honestly, can’t recommend Gmel enough!

Gilbert is a wonderful driving instructor. I decided to take his refresher course because after years of not having a car and mainly using public transit, I am planning to purchase one soon. Gilbert is much better than the driving instructors I had as a teenager. He provides great tips, clear instructions, and doesn't make you feel bad for making mistakes. He is able to expertly and calmly maneuver the car to avoid near accidents while you are learning. I had great driving sessions with him and highly recommend his classes.

Gilbert is such a great teacher! Took a few lessons with him and was able to pass my road test on the first go. The biggest thing I appreciate about Gilbert is that he offers pick up anywhere within DC which significantly cut down on my commute time and cost. He pointed out all the areas that I needed to improved, and the deduct points in the test I may neglected. Also he's patient. I was around 34 weeks pregnancy, he would sometimes drop me off at my place to make me get home easier. Thanks for all his guidance, I passed my parallel parking and road test smoothly. Highly recommend! I had been taking a few classes this month with a different driving school, but was never fully comfortable and got too nervous with how that instructor taught. But I had a road test coming up and knew I needed more practice. I emailed Gmel Driving Academy and some other schools last minute asking if they had any spots the same week that I could take to prep for my road test. Gmel was the first and only one to reply back and Mr. Gilbert emailed, called, and texted first thing the next day. I was surprised and appreciative of how quickly he communicated through the whole week. I booked both their open sessions and in just two sessions (one two days before and one day of my road test), I practiced general driving, turns, the test route, all kinds of parking, and even some highway driving. I certainly got the most out of my time and was so thankful for his instruction. He was patient, encouraging, and knew how to guide/talk me through what I was expected to do. We also had a great chat in each session. It was also very helpful that they can pick you up at your home for not that much more of a cost - which also helped me get practice driving in my own neighborhood. I took my road test and passed! I'll most likely look into their highway driving practice as well so I can get more comfortable on the highway too. Thank you again, Gmel Driving Academy!

The instructors are extremely professional yet down to earth. As a young woman I always felt comfortable and safe during my sessions. I was most impressed with their patience when I’m behind the wheels. They provided clear and concise instructions so that you can easily process what’s being expected of you. The best part about their service is that they take you in the same vicinity of the test site so that you can familiarize yourself with the route. I passed my driving test on the first try!! Gilbert responds to text and calls promptly and is sure to communicate if there are any last minute updates. The vehicle was clean and easy to maneuver for being that I’m a beginner. This was the best experience I have had. I am 21 years old and I took my test twice and just couldn’t get past my nerves. Gmel driving is the best driving school hands down. They helped me pass my driving test with a 90%. After 10 hrs of practice i felt confident in myself. I could get in the front seat and pull the car out of the parking spot no hesitation but there was things that i still needed to work on. I needed an additional 10 hrs of practice to learn how to properly stop at a stop sign. Gmel was dedicated to helping me pass from the very start. With upbeat teachers that like their jobs. I passed the very first time i took the roads test. Now i am a licensed driver and can purchase a car. All in a matter of two weeks. Depending on how fast you learn you may need more or less practice then myself. I believe that everyone should attend driving school before driving. It makes the roads safer and your loved ones safer. If you want to pass your test Gmel Driving Academy is the school to attend.

Wow y’all, this man is no joke. I just got back from my drivers exam and I passed after 3 years of procrastination, wasted money, different driving instructors, etc. Gilbert is very knowledgeable and effective in the way he relays that knowledge to you. He is patient and attentive to you. It’s not an instructor that goes in the car and just be on their phone. He looks at the way you drive, explains your mistakes and gives you opportunity to rectify it. He doesn’t go around yelling but is instead understanding and patient. I went driving with him for 2 hours 12/30/20 and after that, he went on about how I should schedule for my test. That was MAJOR as without that pressure, I would’ve been slacking. So I trained with him (and his partner) every weekdays leading up to today (01/08/21). I highly recommend you pay the extra added fee of him taking you to and from the exam because he takes care of EVERYTHING for you. I know everyone isn’t for everyone but please give them a chance :) P.S: Also shoutout to his partner Guy. I was apprehensive practicing with anyone other than Gilbert but Guy is also amazing and patient.

This is a great driving school for those who want simplicity. I used a different driving school beforehand due to time constraints and the instructor made things unnecessarily complicated. Gilbert made things simple. He caught a lot of my tendencies (driving above speed limit, turning too far from the curb), and also showed me how to rear park and side mirrors adjustment tips, among other things. I rented Gmel's car for the road test and it was a smooth process and he arrived there well ahead of me with the car. The road test took like 5 minutes and I passed. I overestimated the road test. Or perhaps I was just prepared well. Either way, I would recommend Gmel Driving School.

As a 33 year old Mom of 2 I was terrified and very nervous about being on the road. Gilbert instantly put me at ease and I passed my test 1st try yesterday after 3 weeks of lessons. Gilbert is incredibly patient, calm and excellent at teaching and giving you the necessary tools and tips to gain confidence and become a safe driver. Hi my name is Kenya. I recently got my license on January 25,2020. And I couldn’t have done it without Gmel Driving Academy. I came in with 40hours of parking lot driving and no street experience I didn’t even know how to park just the basics. I started with them on January 18,2020. I met with instructors Saturday, Monday, Tuesday Wednesday, Friday, and 1 hr Saturday before my test. Throughout my time with them they taught me so much in so little time. The driving teacher is the best cool calm and relaxing. Very caring and trustful person. He will most definitely get your your license if you put in the training hours. 2 hours or more suggested plus they give u a road test after you practice. You can trust Mr gilbert and he will get you what you paid for. I passed my test on my 2nd try with Mr gilbert. The first time I failed he gave me his card and told me to call him for practice.
