To Drive or Not to Drive? When I came to the U.S. I figured that I desperately needed to get a driver’s license and learn to drive a car. The thought of spending all day travelling by bus was not appealing in the least. I googled driving schools in the local area and was lucky enough to find Newport County Driving School. NCDS has classroom lessons, behind the wheel instruction, and their prices are affordable. My driving lessons consisted of about 15 hours with instructor John Leeds. Mr. Leeds is very experienced and highly qualified. He’s patient, which is important for new drivers, and has a good sense of humor. He expertly explained each step properly and in sequence. He focused on preventing any risky situation, how to observe the road and be aware of all 360 degrees around you, and how to quickly analyze the behavior of drivers around you. During the road lessons, I was trained on changing lanes, three point turns, parallel parking, garage parking, and dealing with steep hills. We drove in neighborhoods, downtown, and on the highway. I was also lucky enough to drive with him in different weather conditions and different times of day. He made sure that I was comfortable in every condition. The car they provide was also quite helpful. It’s equipped with a large student driver sign that lets other drivers and pedestrians know you are learning. It also has a second brake pedal so the instructor can intervene when necessary. All in all, I felt very comfortable with the instruction and car provided by NCDS. My road test was in Newport and lasted about 20 minutes. NCDS will provide a car for the test if needed, which is great. I changed lanes, did some three point turns, and showed my new level of comfort driving backwards. I passed on my first attempt! I’d like to thank Mr. Leeds and Newport County Driving School for their expert instruction and making me feel comfortable the whole time. I highly recommend NCDS to anyone in need of a driver’s license or some expert driving instruction. Thank you very much! You are the best!

I highly recommend using Newport County Driving School for the entire process of getting your driver's license. The online classes needed to get your permit were very convenient. All of the driving instructors were very professional,and John Leeds is very helpful with the process of getting your license. Using the practice course makes taking the driving test much less stressful. I'll be using them again for my younger son too.

A fantastic group of people who really helped my nervous teen gain confidence in his driving abilities. They were patient, informative, and gave us great feedback. The practice test at their Tiverton location really helped prepare my teen for the nerve-racking exam (the exam seems to have a high failure rate-- 4 of the 7 teen drivers l watched did not pass.)All and all, once I figured out the website it was a breeze to navigate (Hint: if you take the driver's Ed with them, you'll need to create another log in for the Behind the wheel part) Overall, my teen passed his test the first time, and it was money well spent. Attended the Driver’s Ed classes here. Great times and hours, very nice, smooth class, easy to follow through. Later on I signed up for the 4 Driving Lessons package, with road test practice, and you can use their vehicle for the DMV Road Test Exam. Awesome online scheduling for the lessons, and they are very flexible. They also pick you up for your driving lessons and drop you off, and take you to Road Test Exam on the day of your date. Definitely would recommend. Very supportive and helpful!

They provided a welcoming environment during the classroom during Drivers Ed. They were also, very accommodating and allowed you to make up any missed classes. As to the driving lessons the instructors were very friendly and very informational they were able to answer any questions I had regarding driving. I would recommend using them for Drivers Ed and driving lessons.

I'm giving three stars because two out of three experiences were great, and one was terrible. First, my son's driver's ed instructional classroom experience was great! Mr. DeArruda was knowledgeable, patient and funny. Ready for the permit test! We returned for driving instruction and were pleased that John Leeds returned our call right away, scheduled us flexibly, and agreed to pick up my son at the house for a lesson. The car ran well, had a backup camera, and was clean. My son said that although Mr. Leeds was "hard to read," and seemed irritated at times, the lesson went okay. Two follow-up lessons with Mr. Campion were top notch! Highly recommend Mr. Campion-- patient, encouraging, knowledgeable, and calm. Then came the day of the driver's test. Mr. Leeds was impatient with me and my son, argued with my son over putting a backpack with medical supplies in the back seat, "I don't know what to do with it, your mom does. Leave it with her." Mr. Leeds did eventually allow the backpack, but his tone was not professional and my son's medical condition was previously disclosed. Next, I heard, "Hurry up, we don't have all day. I have to get to Providence for some other appointments and they're waiting on you." Note: At this point, it was 45 minutes before our scheduled appointment and we had already been in the lot for an hour. I called Mr. Leeds the next day to thank him for his time and knowledge, but to share my concerns. He was dismissive and rude, interrupted often, and denied a comment I heard with my own ears. The closest I got to an apology was a snarky, "I'm sorry you feel that way, m'am." I spoke with a friend whose son reported similar rude behavior from Mr. Leeds. Disappointing, since it looks like others had positive experiences.

This is probably the best experience ever for me. As a new driver, John not only taught me how to drive, he is such a good company on the road and corrected me every time I made a mistake to make sure I am safe and can be the best driver I can be. John's approach to teaching behind the wheel is both humorous and instructional, motivating me to do my best possible in order to get that license! I highly recommend Newport County Driving School. Along with the extremely helpful lessons, you’re guided by friendly and experienced instructors who 100% have your back and want to see you succeed. Mr. Martins was my first instructor and he drastically improved my driving skills when I first got on the roads. Ms. DeSantis is an extremely reassuring individual and a calming presence who helped me gain more confidence in myself. Mr. Whoolhouse guided me on my first time up in Little Compton and made sure I was being precautious and safe. Mr. Lis was a great young man and he was extremely helpful and an all around great spirit to learn from. I had issues with road test scheduling at the DM located in Middletown. I was unable to take my test and I was looking at waiting for a couple months longer before my next opportunity. Mr. Leeds, the owner of Newport County Driving School, assisted me to get a test the next morning, a Herculean task when it comes to DMV waiting times. All in all, the Newport County Driving School is a great organization, extremely friendly, personable and helpful and they prepare young drivers not just to pass their tests, but for taking on the critical privilege of getting on the roads and conducting yourself in a safe and precise manner. I remember I was nearly 16 years old and I had to start thinking about my license. My parents and I were looking around and decided to enroll me into the NCDS. In driver's ed I learned everything I needed to know about the road and the precautions that came with it. I then took the behind the wheel experience which gave me a real feel of how to work an automobile and how to traverse the road. I can say that the Newport County Driving school, has my thumbs up.

I spent 6 days in the summer for the classes before I got my permit and they really know how to make it an enjoyable learning place and get the information in your head so you can pass the test, my experience with the behind the wheel was fun too everytime I did something wrong they’d make a little joke about it so it wasn’t anything you had to stress on but could have s good laugh over, I highly recommend going here for your classes and if you can behind the wheel practice.
