Reviews of Nashville Hip Institute at TOA
Robert Baker
I was referred to Nashville Hip Institute from my Dr. in Florida. They setup the scheduling in such a way that is was all set for 1 day in the office. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The office ran more efficiently than I could have hoped for. What they said could take all day only took a few hours! Dr. Byrd should be extremely proud of his staff. Dr. Byrd himself was great! He took all the time I needed to clearly explain, in terms I can understand, exactly what was going on and what options for treatment I have. Easily, one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had at a doctors office!

Wonderful experience at the Nashville Hip Institute. Just had my final post-op visit. I have the highest praise for all working here. Dr Byrd is excellent. He has a super office staff(Ashley and Kay were most helpful). Big thanks to Ashley and Ben with PT. Had so many questions after surgery and they answered in a professional and timely manner, those in person or via email as I live six hours away. Thanks to the surgical outpatient staff at St Thomas for making surgery day a breeze. My husband and greatly appreciate all you did that day. My entire experience with the Nashville Hip Institute has been positive and extremely helpful. Thanks to all involved!!! If you are having hip problems this is the place to go!

I can't say enough about how excellent Nashville Hip Institute is, my daughter and I both had hip surgery this summer. Each person in the office is awesome. Tesa at the front has always taken time to answer questions and find appointments that work for us both since we travel several hours to get there. Ashley and Kay are the best nurses and have handled so many of our needs and questions quickly and thoroughly. Beth is an awesome Nurse Practitioner who is very skilled at her job! Beth preformed multiple diagnostic injections by ultrasound on myself and my daughter. One of her injections alleviated all of my hamstring pain. We have been seen by Ashley, Sarah and Ken and they are 3 of the best physical therapist I have ever seen. They definitely use specific skills each time we see them to diagnose, treat and keep us both on track for healing. I appreciate the excellent care and kindness we have always received from each person at Nashville Hip Institute.

I was and continue to be extremely impressed and pleased with Nashville Hip Institute. Four years ago I was diagnosed with a labral tear in my right hip and had surgery performed by a doctor in the city in which I live in. This surgery was not successful and I was referred to Dr. Byrd. Dr. Byrd and his team are simply amazing. They all truly care about their patients.
The day of the consult is long but extremely thorough. I had x-rays done, was sent for an MRI, saw a physical therapist, and then met with Dr. Byrd. Everyone worked as a team and had their reports and recommendations ready for Dr. Byrd. Dr. Byrd spent a great deal of time in the exam room talking to me about his opinion and what he thought my options were.
The day of surgery was smooth. I believe it speaks to Dr. Byrd's character when I mention that the surgery center anesthesiologist and nurses spoke highly of him. Dr. Byrd did not rush from one case to another as evidenced by the fact he spent 3.5 hours on my surgery making sure it was done properly (the previous doctor was in and out in a little over an hour). I will add that Dr. Byrd's surgical approach lead to a significantly less amount of post-surgical pain as compared to the first doctor I had.
I live 3 hours away from Nashville Hip Institute, but having them care for me was worth the several trips I had to make for post-surgical check ups. When you are in the office and in physical therapy, you see so many photos, jerseys and uniforms of the professional athletes, dancers, wrestlers and military personnel that have been fortunate enough to have been helped by Dr. Byrd and his team. Not once did I feel any less important than the other patients simply because I have a desk job and not a career in the public eye.

The Nashville Hip Institute is a professional medical office you can trust with your health. Dr. Byrd and his head nurse are very personable and caring. There seems to be some issues with communication between nurses, scheduling and PT when it comes to communicating with patients. After our first visit, we were told one future plan by one nurse, but then never heard back until I called and e-mailed repeatedly. Communication and follow-ups with patients could be improved.

I just recently had Hip Arthroscopy and Dr. Byrd and his team are wonderful! He has amazing bedside manners and gives his undivided attention to all of your concerns. He was very informative and made the process of making a decision on surgery much easier. The staff at Nashville Hip Institute are very nice as well! I would definitely recommend!

I would say if 4 & 1/2 stars. Expectation can dampen a first impression. I made an appointed to see Dr. Bryd for basically a 2nd opinion with possible surgical options, if needed. This place definitely has their own way of doing things, which I can see after the fact is pretty efficient and thorough. When I drove 3 hrs, booked a hotel stay and was told I had a whole day ahead of me, I was a little upset to know I wasn’t seeing the MD (again it was never clear to me I wouldn’t see him). I was told I would see NP first, get an MRI and have a full day there. Besides the first initial shock that I would not see the Md, I did feel like they did an amazing job. Beth, the Nurse Practitioner was very professional and extremely knowledgeable. She took the time to explain what the rest of the day looked like, and why they have a process for doing things the way they do. She also helped me understand my possible courses of action depending on what my diagnostics showed. The whole day was seamless, it wasn’t very busy there. They seemed to have a plan and it was executed well. I was very impressed with Ashley, the Physical Therapist. I felt she was compassionate and understanding of my goals for staying active and explained my problems and how to stay active for the long term. Also it was easy to make an appointment and Morgan was quick to email me responses and get me an appointment as soon as I got her the proper documents. I think the only improvement could be a little clearer communication on itinerary and expectations in case the patient is not confused or unclear. I feel I get all the answers I needed for now without having to see doctor and am happy with the course I took. Thanks again! I highly recommend them.

The Nashville Hip Institute is top of the line! Their staff is so qualified, patient serving, and friendly. Every individual that I came in contact with from the front desk, insurance coordinators, nurses, physical therapy staff, and Dr. Byrd, himself, went out of their way to make sure that my needs were being met. You will not find another place that will give you the care, medical treatment, and resolution than this facility. I hope I never have to have my other hip worked on....but if I do, you can be rest assured that I am headed to the Nashville Hip Institute!

My biggest disappointment was that I didn't need the hip surgery for which Dr. Byrd is famous. I told him at the end of the day that I wanted to give him a hug, but it's covid time so I could not. The process was day long and in that time I saw him three times and also had x-rays, MRI and an appointment with physical therapist, who was also great. (Ken) In our initial visit, he assured me that at the end of the day we would have a plan. His kindness, understanding, patience and confidence were so reassuring to me. Never once did we feel rushed and I was also grateful that he allowed my husband to come with me. I just wish he also did hip replacements.

I have recently been under the car of Dr. Brown and I just want to say this entire office is professional, clean, and really cares about their patients. My overall experience has been really good. I’m kind of “princess/scared” of a patient and I don’t mean to be that way, but they dealt with me so well, we’re kind, and always explained everything so thoroughly. Very knowledgeable in their field, you can just tell by the way they work.

Dr. J. W. Thomas Byrd and his staff are the absolute best.
My daughter injured her hip running cross country and we were finally referred to Dr. Byrd for diagnosis and treatment. He listened to her and her complaints, he treated her excellent, and he diagnosed the issue quickly and fixed it. She is now 7 weeks post op and feels great.
His staff is amazing as well. They have been very responsive and have answered our many questions and have been such a pleasure to work with.
I have told many people that if all doctors and their staff were as great as Dr. Byrd and his staff, the world would be a much better and healthier, happier place.
My family can’t thank you enough, NHI!

I had hip surgery with Dr. Byrd 2 years ago for a traumatic detachment of my gluteus medius/abductor. I am 100% healed, at 100% strength in my hip-and feel that in fact my operated hip is the only part of my body that DOESN'T hurt. Beth Bardowski treated me conservatively for a year and she is, hands down, the most amazing practitioner with sonographic evaluation and treatment of the hip in the US-probably world wide. Her knowledge and skill is unparalleled, as is Dr. Byrd's surgical capabilities. And importantly, as a hip surgeon myself, I can say that the therapy group at NSMOC is owed a great shout out-I would never have gotten to this level of function without Ashley, Casey and Ken. This team of clinicians is the whole package and I owe them my pain free hip! Thank you all!

I've been a patient here for many years, and met with Dr. Byrd, PT crew, Dr. Tania Ferguson. Pretty impressed with the quality of care. Dr. Ferguson went out of her way to make sure my surgery went well. When I had a reaction to anesthesia, late at night, she came from home to rule out any complications. The stuff at NHI is very helpful. Sure, the wait occasionally can be longer than anticipated, but when I had an emergency, they took me right in.

Dr Byrd may have saved my life because I couldnt imagine living with the pain I was having much longer, and mobility and independence is very important to me. His nurse Beth is amazing. She tells you like it is but is also very kind and knowledgeable. Same with Kay. And Stephanie who schedules, and so many of the other staff were always so helpful and friendly. Everyone is so good at their job. I had a couple setbacks before surgey due to not being able to have an MRI and another issue that needed addressing before I could be operated on, but they really worked with me on the issues. Now, I’m 3 months post op and it’s insane that I don’t hurt anymore. I’m still seeing my own physical therapist (because I like him better) and still on some restrictions but it feels amazing to not be in pain. I had forgotten what it felt like to not hurt all of the time. The only issue is insurance denying the codes, but I’ve been assured that it will get sorted out.
I cannot reiterate enough how much Dr Byrd gave me back my life. And how much better quality of care I got there as opposed to my visits to the TOA.

Amy Jean is exceptional, knowledgeable, dedicated and thorough. She sincerely cares about people, not just patients and goes above and beyond to get to the bottom of complex medical issues and to provide excellent care. She is an asset to the exceptional work of Dr. Byrd and Nashville Hip Institute.

I have nothing but good things to say about Nashville Hip Institute. I’m currently a patient of Amy Jean, PA-C and she has been wonderful to work with as she is very thorough in assessing her patients. She’s very personable and easy to talk to, and she actually listens to her patients.

I've gone through two hip surgeries (for impingement and Labral tears) and have been with the Nashville Hip Institute for almost two years. I continue to go once a week but was going at least twice a week post-surgery. The PT and front desk staff are some of the most empathetic and amazing people I've had the pleasure to meet. Whenever I am in, I witness them doing everything they can to encourage and help their patients. I'm also an assistant Self-Defense instructor (training in a combination of Krav Maga and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) and it was important to me to be able to rehab as an athlete. Casey, Ken, and Ashley have all worked with me and they consistently go above and beyond to understand the movement patterns I need to execute and my goals. You definitely get a whole squad on your side when you go to them. They're awesome!

I was privileged to be referred to the PT department of NHI to rehab from surgery. There services and expertise exceeded my expectations. They were so knowledgeable and innovative in my treatment plan. They were also warm and personable giving “one on one” attention at every visit. Ashley and Casey were the best!

My son (16) had Arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder for a slap tear with Dr Brown. We can’t say enough good things about him and his staff. He was very thorough and answered any questions myself or my son had. He and his staff helped us have a smooth experience. Hoping to see my son back on the mound soon! Thank you Dr Brown and Staff

worked with Ken and Casey in PT. Both were great. The exercises were challenging but not excessive - I learned a lot that I can incorporate into workouts to stay healthy going forward. Was out of action for about 6 months before going to see them, but now am back to running and exercising normally again.

Nashville Hip Institute's entire staff is top notch. Though you never want to need surgery or physical therapy, I consider myself lucky to be living in Nashville so close to Nashville Hip so they can help me through it!

Surgeons from all over the world come here to study and train under Dr. Byrd. Dr. Byrd and his staff are very friendly and they all are amazing at what they do!
