The first time I walked into this place, I got such a good feeling. The energy was good and the customer service was excellent. They actually didn't have my boot in stock even through I had already purchased it online, but how the situation was handled and how good Brennan is at his job, there was just no way I could have been upset about it. (Thankfully, there was another one already on order.) If you need to get fitted for a mountaineering boot, you won't do better than getting fitted by Brennan. We went through all the options to see what felt the best. He took the time to show me different lacing techniques. As someone brand new to mountaineering, this experience was incredibly valuable. In addition to this, after looking for soft shell pants that fit me and having no luck, the guy at the front desk took the time to show me where I could find pants online that will work for me as I'm 5'1". He was happy to help me procure pants, even if the sale wasn't going to them. This place is great.

Awesome, friendly outdoors shop! Whether you are very new to the outdoors or a grizzled mountain person, you will get super helpful service from very knowledgeable folks. I am awful with names, the shoe guy (he knows EVERYTHING about shoes and boots), a lady who is an expert skier, and and experienced ice climber helped us when we last visited, and they were all extremely helpful, even for us being beginners at some of those and having loads of questions!

I live in Tacoma and there are no good options for buying xc skis here, so I called Ascent, and, even over the phone, they were so willing to help. Just to be nice, the person I talked to located some other places I could go for skis if coming to Seattle was too inconvenient. I then drove up to Ascent and it was 100% worthwhile! They helped me figure out the right xc skis for me and my partner, and they gave us a great deal!

The absolute best place to go for any of your outdoors needs. They only stock the best brands, a lot of stuff you won’t find anywhere else. The footwear selection is small but for good reason, because Brennan only buys the best quality projects. Several times I’ve been in and asked why they don’t stock a particular model, and Brennan has given me a thorough explanation on why, whether it be it was replaced or the model isn’t as good as another brand. The service is even better, I have atypical feet and the footwear team even spent over an hour helping me find a pair of boot and footbeds that fit well. I’ll never go to REI for boot fitting ever again!

My favorite shop to buy any hiking/mountaineering equipment that requires a good fit, based on multiple visits! In the summer, I bought trail runners there and got a great fit by Burke! As anyone doing lot of miles on/off trails knows, shoes that your feet are happy with are worth their weight in gold. Yesterday I came again and got fitted by Burke for scrambling boots, and again I came away with a great fit. I rarely buy in brick-and-mortar stores today at full retail prices, but Ascent Outdoor is one very warranted exception. It's reputation in the Seattle mountaineering community is well-deserved!

I came here looking for mountaineering boots. I could have gone to REI but some people suggested this place instead since it's more focused on climbing. All the employees were a pleasure to work with, especially the guy running the shoe department. The guy is clearly passionate about footwear. He acts like the most important part of his day is making sure the stuff you put on your feet is the best fit for you. Somehow he managed to juggle several customers at once without feeling like he was neglecting any one of them. He was eager to talk about different socks, liners, cushions, and boots and how each of them play a part in a good fit. When you're spending several hundred dollars on footwear it's nice to have someone like that guide you. Great employees and great selection. I'll definitely be back.

Great local store with above and beyond customer service. Their mountaineering boot selection is impressive with several options. Brennan did an excellent job helping me find boots that meet my needs. He asked great questions about my intended use to be able to show me suitable options. I’ve struggled to find boots that fit for awhile and Brennan was patient the entire time while we tried different options until I find one I like and then gave me tips for lacing. Very appreciative that the staff takes pride in what they do and are willing to take time to find the right products for their customers.

I flew from GA to climb Mt. Rainier and used Ascent as my primary store to both buy and rent the gear I needed. Great communication long distance and in store! Also, the store just has a great atmosphere and created an overall pleasant experience, especially for a Seattle outsider. The only recommendation I would have is to make the in-store pickup option more streamlined. If you want to do a pick-up order, you still have to choose delivery online and then put in a local address (I just used the store), and then it'll give you the option to pick up. Nothing terrible, just was a little confusing for me for some reason, so in case anyone else gets confused, here you go.

Huge shout out to Brandon! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I purchased my first ever split board in the fall of last year. Only used it twice (Snoqualmie ski resort few weeks ago and a touring intro class at pineapple basin today) and part of the binding broke. I literally drove that afternoon to the store from the mountain to see if they can order me new bindings cause I needed it for a trip next weekend. I talked to the manager, Brandon that I wanted to even rent one or buy a new one, but they didn’t have my size/it was already rented out. They wouldn’t also have the binding in stock/ordered in time. Brandon hooked me up with new bindings that afternoon, even put it on for me, and checked my skins that they fit, all with a busy store and done in 30 mins! He was so kind and understanding of my situation. I also ending up buying an alpine harness and more climbing gear. I can’t thank Brandon enough for this hospitality today!!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 please buy him lunch! Thank you thank you thank you, Brandon! YOU made my day cause touring today was not fun and I was second guessing my new sport. But now w my board fixed I’m excited to try it out next weekend! PS I have also gotten all my outdoor boots from the store and each time the staff are sooo amazing! Another staff member also recommended a touring pack and it’s now my fave pack! Everyone is so awesome! I always recommend you guys to anyone looking to go into the outdoors. Keep up the amazing teamwork! 🤩

—UPDATE to 4 stars Pro: I was able to find canyoneering shoes in stock here that were sold out everywhere else. Downside: Had a shipping issue that caused me to not receive my purchase by the date I needed them. Jake was very nice about the situation and apologetic which I appreciate. It does not fix that I don’t get the shoes in time, but mistakes do happen and I appreciate them being nice about my anger regarding the situation as well as refunding the shipping cost. - Will update to 5 stars as long as the shoes arrive in good condition or downgrade from 4 if not

I ordered a bunch of climbing gear from Ascent and their customer service is top notch. UPS made a mistake and delivered my package to the wrong address (usually not an issue at my place). Tracking it down and getting the gear in time for an upcoming trip was a frustrating ordeal, however, Ascent's team made it much easier through timely response to my lost package request. After I spoke with them on the phone and emailed the order info they initiated a lost package investigation with UPS, and overnighted a replacement delivery due to the trip I had in a few days. Very grateful for their friendly customer service and quick support!

Shout out to Brennan! Helped me dial in the fit on a pair of La Sportiva approach shoes, spending some time working on them in the back of the store with some boot fitting equipment and gave my toes some more room and and they went from a good fit to amazing. They have some shoe fitting expertise here like no where else in the city. These guys fit you to a pair of shoes and everyone else just sells you shoes. Go here for great help

Edited from 1 star to 4. See below. I traded in a lot of gear with them, accumulated about $500 worth of credit. Then they filed for bankruptcy and told me I could no longer use the store credit to buy things. I could only use it for 50% off their MSRP prices... As you know you can basically get 20-30% off anything at basically anytime online. So I traded in a ton of great gear for an extra 20% off coupon code... And I have to buy it at their store. Not cool. EDITED 8/18/22: New owners are now redeeming old credit for par value so my above complaint has been addressed. This would be a 5 star establishment if not for my prior issues. I love that they are a local outdoor retailer, the employees are all super knowledgeable and helpful, and it is a low pressure sales environment. Given the updated policies I would give it 5 stars but I am removing 1 star just because of the prior headaches. But moving forward, I would not hesitate to recommend this place to people. Much better service and way more knowledgable staff than REI.

Absolutely incredible place! I went in looking for a mountain boot with no idea what I was doing and Burke worked with me for almost two hours trying different brands, styles and teaching me lacing techniques. This is now my first stop for anything I need before hitting the box stores! I was just blown away by the atmosphere of the shop, and the sincerity and knowledge of the staff. Great local shop! I've sold plenty of gear here on consignment, and picked up some great deals on used gear as well. If you need a map or fuel canister for a trip, it's the place to go. Knowledgeable staff, from shoes to sleeping bags. Great experience renting gear here too (but the deposit can be pricy, and their price for ski rentals is way too high).

The folks at Ascent couldn't have been better. My first visit I was looking for some used climbing shoes but had no luck. Still, Brandon was more than eager to help analyze my foot size and type to provide recommendations for me despite me not purchasing anything there during that visit. I returned a second time with my original pair of mountaineering boots (purchased elsewhere) that completely tore my feet up. Brandon stayed well past closing time to ensure we found the right boot and insoles for my otherwise wonky foot shape. I finally got to properly use the new boots in the mountains and they worked perfectly for me. I very, VERY rarely post reviews but the customer service and overall experience was so good for me not to write a review (and hopefully it serves as a recommendation to other potential/future shoppers). I moved to Ballard about 6 months ago and I find myself in Ascent just about every weekend renting Skis/Snow Shoes for adventuring! I have found so many great used pieces of gear as well, the most notable of which was an INCREDIBLY nice Mammut hard shell that has been my favorite purchase so far!!! Love this place, the rental process is so easy, everyone is so nice, and it's a very low pressure sales environment where you can get friendly advice without feeling pressured to buy anything!

My favorite outdoor shop in the PNW! The customer service is phenomenal (yes, better than REI!) At one point, we had nearly every employee in the shop running around helping us get set up for a last minute back ski tour. We were backcountry skiing for the first time, and they went above any beyond to prepare us. They made sure we got the right length ski, walked us through how to step in, switch between walk and ski mode, and gave us all the tips and tricks you'd probably learn from a guide. We rented cross country skate skis from Ascent and the process was great! The quality of the skis was excellent, the prices were very reasonable, and the staff members were incredibly helpful, they even allowed us to drop off the next morning with no late fee when we were stuck in terrible traffic in the mountains trying to get back to return them before closing. Ascent is the best!

This store has long been one of my favorite outdoor gear shops, and I am so glad that the wide range of quality merchandise and friendly and helpful staff is still part of the store even after the transition in 2019. While physically smaller then some outdoor gear shops (e.g., REI), they manage to stock the best/highest value items consistently, so I never have to endure a shopping odyssey to find what I want. An especial thanks to Burke and Alex for saving my ski trip next week after an unfortunate gear issue arose at the last minute. I wish I could give y’all 10 stars!

This is our favourite outdoor store. The staff are SO friendly and knowledge and make sure to check in on you without being intrusive. Although we live in Vancouver, we make a point to come to Ascent every time we're in Seattle because we love digging through the second hand clothing and shoes. We've both picked up some killer deals on some really good quality pieces. Vancouver has nothing on this store! We can't wait to be able to come down again. But maybe when Washington and the States has Covid under better control...

Came in looking for some hiking shoes and socks and got some great help from a knowledgeable employee. He even stretched out my chosen pair to fit my feet better using a special tool. I recently purchased a pair of snowshoes because they were one of the few stores that had them available. After the order was placed I received an email from a store associate named "Jake" to inform me that because of an online glitch the snowshoes were in fact not available. I explained to Jake that the whole reason I ordered them through their store is because of their availability most of the other stores I searched were all on backorder. Jake informed me that they were supposed to be receiving another order from the manufacturer within a week and because of the inconvenience and the glitch that they would priority mail them to me as soon as they showed up. The shipment ended up coming early to the store and Jake emailed me and told me they would be in the mail by the afternoon. One day and a half later I am picking them up from the post office. Thank you very much Jake for your prompt service and quick emails. PS- I live on the complete other side of the country.

We went in here today looking for snow boots for our 4 year old and snow pants for us. We had no clue what to get and were only looking for things to wear to take our daughter sledding/snow tubing. The staff was very friendly and helpful! We were not pressured to buy anything we didn't need. Although we don't find used snow pants for me, we ended up buying wool kids socks and a pair of used snow pants for my husband. The store has an excellent selection of men's and women's outdoor gear. They even have rentals! Highly recommended!

I order a Nemo Tensor Insulated Long/Wide pad online. Its Friday 06-25-2021 and it arrived by UPS today. My order is #25215. And I inflated the pad immediately and have a fast leak on a brand new pad. As promised, I have a update on the issue. Ascent Outdoors had responded. And the issue is resolved. Full refund. They were very responsive and run a solid customer service.

This is my favorite store. Great selection of casual and serious athletic clothing--I end up getting most of my clothes there (Prana!). I don't climb, so I'm not sure about that selection, but the bike shop is well stocked and soon to move into it's own location--so even more bikey goodness. The repair shop does a great job with my bikes. Everyone there is really nice and knowledgeable. It's a pleasure to stop in .

Used to be a great place to find an unexpected bargain, now just another pretty good gear store (and frankly, for most new gear I'm going to REI). The dudebros behind the counter have been nice on my several visits this year, although they definitely have that "I will tell you what you need" vibe that you often get in gear stores.

For those of you selling your stuff here, keep in mind two things: they don't give you a lot of money, although it saves you the trouble of listing it on eBay or dealing with Craigslist. The problem is that they don't give you a lot, AND it's store credit. They don't have sales very often on the things I'm interested in, so I get less for my gear and I pay more for theirs. If you happen to find a good deal on something used then it can be worth it. The staff is sometimes great, other times a little rude. The selection is as good as you could expect from a small store. The return policy is not very customer friendly.

There’s no better gear shop especially for mountaineering and backcountry skiing. Everyone you interact with is amazing, kind, and incredibly knowledgeable. It’s the kind of store you walk into dead set that custom insoles will fix your touring boots discomfort and make you go pro and instead they will insist on punching your boots for a quarter the price and give you free stickers and a discount; which is half the benefits of being pro anyway. 10/10 would recommend if anything just for the great conversation, but the gear selection is top notch too.
