Best customer service in the whole city. Not kidding. Sales staff has somehow nailed the perfect balance of being available, and helpful, while at the same time, you feel free to explore, like it's your own private closet. I walked in on a whim about a month ago, and asked about a hat for my abnormally large head: within a minute I was sized up, and looking at some really great options. Interestingly, the first one that was suggested to me is the one I took home - both the size, and the vibe matched me perfectly. Five stars for that!! It's my new fav :) My gf took home a great new hat too. Very knowledgeable staff, and excellent products. I felt quite welcome. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in town. Thx JHH!!

Wonderful store that harks back to that personal shopping experience back in the day. Everything a gentleman needs to look sharp and dapper. John assisted me in finding a nice Fedora that fit well. A great little haberdasher with an interesting selection of men's accessories - jackets, scarves, sweaters, umbrellas, and my favorite, Hats! They have a large variety of hats- fedoras, derbys, flat caps, panama, and more. The staff is friendly and helpful. Once you tell them what you like they will help you find things that suit you. Their goods can be on the pricey side, but you can happen on a good sale occasionally (especially near seasonal changes). Highly recommend.

Could not find the wedding accessories we wanted for the groom at Nordstrom. Walked in and these guys had everything on our list, they were so kind and helpful, it felt like going back in time shopping here, in the best of ways. I wish we had bought his suit with them as well. Lovely shop and also a fun and memorable experience!

If you like classic, stylish, high quality and well made hats, this is your place to shop. Also their customer service is ALWAYS GREAT. My husband and I purchased 6 hats so far( we do love hats). There are bunch of stores carry hats, but this is the best so far.

I bought a summer hat many years ago at John Helmer Haberdasher, which I found by accident while visiting Portland. Then, two years ago, I lost that hat in Mexico as we rushed to get home at the start of the pandemic. This summer I contacted John Helmer about replacing the hat and discovered that model is no longer available. But they worked with me online (I live on Vancouver Island, BC) to find a new hat. It arrived this week and I love it, even more than the lost hat. I knew the Helmer family ran a fantastic menswear store and now I know their customer service is bar none.

Each time i visit John Helmer the results are excellent. This is not a box store. Every item is of quality and you can expect the retailer chooses items based upon quality meaning one doesn’t have to question a decision. Adding to the goods the service is always fine. It is expected that purchases at John Helmer are meant for occasions and kept and maintained for years. It is a different type of buying experience and one i prefer.

How nice to walk into a fully stocked men's store that offers such good service. My adult son needed a suit for a wedding but was very inexperienced and after looking around at other alternatives (Mens Wearhouse for one), realized that he was in much better hands here with sound advice, better quality goods, and personalized service that was backed by experience.

Visited the store today with my 19 year old son. We knew absolutely nothing about hat style, quality, material, sizing, etc.. Jack greeted us at the door looking very much the professional that he is, and proceeded to school us on the various aspects of the industry. An hour later, and 3 lids in the bag, we walked out of the store completely satisfied, and much more knowledgeable than we could have imagined. We were even treated to a visit from the legendary John Helmer III, himself. What an incredible shopping experience, thank you.

This is a review written by a guy who needed a hat and found it. 2020 - 2021 had lots of hardships and lots of changes. A minor change for myself during this period was a reduction in the amount of hair on my skull. I can't say if it was genetics or the increased stress of these times. Whatever it was I needed to look into some hats to prevent the head from sunburn. This tends to be important as patio life at restaurants, etc. seems to be here to stay for some time. I found a selection of various hat types and spent quite some time trying various things on. Staff just let me do my thing and I found two flat caps. I was able to rule out other hats pretty quickly. I'd also note that from the stores external appearance you might think no deals can be found inside, but I got 2 hats for a good deal. I'd much rather shop here again than at a big corporate online store.

I get easily overwhelmed by shopping in general. This was a great shopping experience. The shop staff were low pressure but extremely helpful. They helped rush tailor my pants and offered to stay open an extra few minutes if I couldn't get to them before the store closed. Best bow tie offerings I've seen. Thanks!

Great service, very helpful staff. I was looking for some Bill's Khakis, but wasn't quite sure what style and color. Staff had a good supply of colors, fits, and sizes to try on, with a full catalog of additional fabrics to feel. Tried a few pairs on, but I'm a little indecisive, so they helped explain the uses of different styles and colors. Ordered through them, they fitted them for me and tailored the length, leg opening, and waist to a better fit. Excellent service, kind and knowledgeable staff!

Our adult son needed a new suit for an important interview. We had passed this store for years so, having been disappointed with the selections in other stores, thought we would give it a try. Though the inventory, of off the rack suits, was somewhat scant, the quality and prices were pleasantly surprising. We were pleased to find a decent suit for a reasonable price and from there were able to accessorize totally to create an entire outfit. (We also noticed that they charged less for some of the same brands of suits that their competitors carried.) The staff is knowledgable, helpful and courteous. We were able to complete our purchase, complete with a fitting, in under an hour. We will definitely consider them in the future. We would believe that their inventory of hats is unsurpassed in the Portland area, which provided a wonderful distraction for another adult son as he waited for his brother.

If you have not stopped into John Helmer Haberdasher off of the corner of Broadway and Salmon you should check out their store. They are celebrating 100 years this year. They have Custom Suits, Dress Shoes, Belts, Hats, Socks, Leather items and a lot more.

My wife and I are from the UK and we were driving from LA up to Vancouver in June this year and spend 2 nights in Portland. I had been looking for a pair of Alden Cordovan shoes for a while and was very pleased to find John Helmer on the corner opposite our hotel. This is a very high quality, old-fashioned gentleman's shop. The service was friendly and professional and I was at last able to buy a pair of Cordovan shoes with polish and spare sets of laces. Can't praise this shop highly enough and would recommend it to anyone.

Great place for hats. However they ignored my son... He's 16 and collects fedoras and is will known for his hats. Maybe because he's young they didn't think they would make a 'sale" whatever the reason he got a hat he wanted anyway and left. Still they do have a nice assortment of hats.

There's a luxury to fine woolens, detailed herringbone of tweed, ascots, hats as class markings, and all the accouterment.
