Reviews of Saint Mark's Episcopal Cathedral
Nick Nuechterlein
This is a special, special place. Most people are familiar with St Mark’s exterior, which you can see from many parts of Seattle including East Lake, Queen Anne, South Lake Union, West Lake, Wallingford, Fremont, and even parts of Ballard. The interior boasts 60+ foot ceilings supported by giant columns that will probably still be there in 500 years barring “the big one.” The choirs?—absolutely a joy. They take me back to some of the dearest Terrence Malick movies—the thin red line, days of heaven, the tree of life, and even to the wonder. The voices are magic and the setting—the stained glass windows, the wooden ceiling, everything—is majestic. They are tolerant people and beyond kind. I am not Episcopalian, but I do enjoy their services and the choirs are well attended by many people of secular/different faiths. Highly, highly recommend the “O” antiphons advent liturgy. Much of this is livestreams, but you really gotta be there.

Absolutely gorgeous building! I saw a concert here and it was such a great experience. Parking was easy to access which was a huge plus.
Kara Oberstadt
We held my son's wedding here (it's his church) and had a wonderful day. Beautiful little chapel for the wedding. The cathedral itself is amazing, especially if you go to Easter or Christmas service.
Peter Smith
Went to St. Mark’s to walk a labyrinth on New Year’s Eve. What a beautiful space! They moved the pews and seating aside so people could walk the in the middle. Live, solemn music facilitated some meditation. It was an excellent experience.
Jeanine Calceta
I come here for Compline, it’s a 30min choir sung mass every Sunday at 930pm that’s open for all denominations. It’s so peaceful and beautiful.
TINA WILDE
This women's shelter is one of the best. Just get rid of 3rd shift shelter staff and no one gets hurt or hypnotised homeless women. Have it ruff enough. But thankfully not dead. Thank you Tina wilde. Indy/ Indiana. Now at taco Bell. You must be safe! The bay is going to happen. Weather here is in 70s been mostly. Sunshine. Farmers are planting corn. So thankful for your help. ////////// Tina.Wilde 2017.

Plans for the building, located on the west side of 10th Avenue East between East Highland Drive and East Galer Street on Capitol Hill, were drawn up in 1926. Fundraising took place for two years until construction began in 1928. Ground was broken on September 30, 1928. The Great Depression took a toll on the parish, however. Construction was incomplete when the cathedral was dedicated on April 25, 1931, and the parish was in default on its mortgage throughout the 1930s. The cathedral was foreclosed upon in 1941 and shut for the next two years. From 1943 to 1944, the United States Army used the cathedral as an anti-aircraft training facility; the evidence of this era can still be seen in murals in the crypt.
In 1944, Bishop S. Arthur Huston reopened discussions with the parish's bankers in St. Louis, Missouri; over the next three years, more funds were raised, and in 1947 the mortgage was paid. The mortgage document was burned before the Parish on Palm Sunday.[1]
The cathedral's dean, Robert V. Taylor, resigned abruptly in March 2008, stating that he and the vestry (church board) diverged in their visions for the future of St. Mark's and there was a loss of trust between them.[2]
After several years of transitional ministry, Taylor was succeeded by Steven Lynn Thomason in the summer of 2012.[3]

Saw SYML in concert. Perfect venue for him. My only feedback would be to raise the stage that the performers are on. Since the seats are all the same level, it was difficult to see through all the heads. A raised stage would allow everyone to see.
Beautiful venue, especially at night.
Franklin Furlong
I attended Sunday evening Compline service. This evening, for the first time ever the the Women's Schola made up the choir. It was beautifully sung. Before and after, attendees walked the labyrinth outside the main door of the cathedral. Young people set up comfortable places on the door of the cathedral with blankets, yoga mats and pillows.
Paul Williams - aka Nunavut Taidy
Great and meaningful experience of worship, wonderful display of a local indigenous artist's work, really attractive building with an impressive, if checkered, history.
Donna Herzfeldt-Kamprath
Our family shared in a wonderful morning of baptisms. All the priests and staff were very welcoming. The sanctuary is peaceful and reverent.
Ben Morton
Beautiful church, went for Easter Sunday for a wonderful service. Welcoming church with some of the most beautiful musical sound you will ever hear.
John Rieth
Absolutely beautiful church!! I was in the neighborhood and dropped to take a few photos, so I haven’t had a chance to hear how amazing the acoustics must be for a musical presentation but I will be looking at the events calendar to hopefully do that soon!!
Riley A Richardson
I am not personally a congregant (nor follower of any specific religion), but as a first-time visitor I sat in awe of the beautiful architecture and phenomenal acoustics housed within St. Mark's. I was lucky enough to see Collin Hay perform here this evening and though it seemed an odd venue to me initially, the cathedral was a perfect match to the intimate nature of his show. I have say it was a truly wondrous experience I will never forget!
Josiah Oliveria
Rating for Noah Gundersen's show on the 4th. What an amazing place to open up for use as a music venue. This was a really wonderful concert!
TG
We attended a concert at the cathedral to see SYML and was blown away with the acoustics and ambience.
Celia Mahue
Not a fan of rating places of worship. It was a beautiful service. Loved the pipe organ, organist quite talented, soloist had a trained voice. The service, in Episcopalian tradition, welcomed everybody. Wonderful service.
s i
Beautiful church. I'm Buddhist but I've been here to attend Compline on Sunday nights a few times. Also caught Agnes Obel here some years ago.
Justin Cook
Attended a concert here, and it was wonderful! Great acoustics, and ambiance.
Claire Jenkins
I attend the Compline service on Sunday nights and the choir is always great. Bring a blanket and enjoy laying on the ground and listening to a beautiful 30 minute service.
Mary Lyons
A day full of happy people! Great facility, labyrinth and restrooms!
bakside Disaster
It's a church. They talk about Jesus a lot here. As far as places go to hear people talk about Jesus this one's pretty good. Organ is really loud. Come prepared to sing.
Jacob Pettingill
They do Gregorian chants Sunday nights at 9:30 pm.
rebecca stadem
Someone was playing the organ when we were there. Magnificent!
Lucy Pearce
Went to a RY X concert here last night. The cathedral concerts are part of the Fremont Abbey Arts organization. It was a magical experience and I think any concert here would be. Beautiful space, delicious experience.
Sacred Realms
Incredible experience... the peace I felt immediately as I entered the cathedral 😌 🙌 🙏 - my first experience at an Episcopalian Church - speechless from the live music from the all men's choir to the organ player who invited everyone upstairs to take a closer look... breathtaking …
Krystle Rose
Didn’t go in, but a beautiful venue.
Pantera Blacksmith
I only like churches for the architecture value, but this is a lovely, wide open, welcoming space. It encourages one to be apart of it...which I am actively considering.
Mr. Pete
Very inviting and friendly. I was greeted on the steps and inside by the rector. Enjoyed the service
Britt Fletcher
Impressive open architecture with amazing acoustics!
Tommy Jernigan
I primarily attend the complain choir. It is a large beautiful church. The choir is always such a relaxing treat. Their Gregorian chants and verses are keeping with old tradition and beautiful in the acoustics of the hall. It is a bit of an attraction however. There are regularly people whispering, coming in during the performance and dropping things. If you attend for the choir, make sure you are respectful.
John Folta
I went here for the Sunday night Gregorian Chants. It was an amazing experience. I can not put into words what it is like to sit and receive prayer that is sung to you in such a beautiful way. Your whole body vibrates with the good energy of the event. It’s a beautiful thing to have people of all walks of life sitting, laying and standing to simply receive prayer. It is worth the experience.
Thomas Huard
Believe it or not it was raining. I had not been to the majestic cathedral in quite sometime. A friend of my had recently committed suicide and I sought some comfort in this house of God. Many do not know that this church is not complete. The original design of the building was twice as large. Because of construction costs and troubles raising funds during the great depression and WWII, the existing smaller layout has remained. It was quiet during my stay, except for a clergyman who stopped at my side after seeing the tears on my face.
Coco
Beautiful church with a welcoming attitude and actions to match. (No fake Christians!) You can participate as much or as little as you choose.
Michel Alexandre Salim (Arcane Hexed Mill)
Beautiful contemplative place. Great liturgy, wonderfully warm people
Jason Yee
Saint Mark's Episcopal Cathedral is not only a place of worship but also a place of gathering. It's a place to heal, a place to enjoy, a place to reflect, and a place to grow. It's an incredibly tall cathedral with a full organ inside. Plenty of parking around though it can get full easily if there is an event. You can potentially see the city skyline and cityscape to the West if you wanted by wading through the bushes.
Raphael Puletz
Architecturally stunning! Great acoustics and has an giant organ. They host concerts here sometimes too.
Jacob Wong
I went to Saint Mark's Episcopal Cathedral for their compline service and it was so relaxing. The all male choir sings in the sanctuary and helps visitors wind down and prepare for their upcoming week. All the volunteers are nice and there is usually parking.
Augusto Glez
Free beginner yoga classes on Mondays!
Elizabeth Simson
Such a beautiful church. The O Antiphons service was wonderful.
Corey H
Amazing Sunday night choir performances. Every Sunday night at 9:00 the men’s choir perform “compline” to close out the week. It is open to everyone. A great time and place to reflect before starting a new week.
Roy Hughes
Generous and friendly, huge choir and glorious classic cathedral organ played by two! Prize-winning organists! Thoughtful and challenging clergy, good sermons on the liturgical calendar. All are welcome there.
Patrick Sullivan
Beautiful cathedral with great acoustics. I went for the singing on Sunday nights, which is a really special experience. The sounds resonates the the church.
Anna M
My favorite place for Sunday night compline. Men's choral is amazing and the interior is gigantic and cozy. People bring pillows and sleeping bags for that service. After the choral is over, you can go up the stairs in the lobby and sit around the organ in the balcony while someone plays, often a different organist week to week.
Lucious Mercury
Violet stained glass bathes the worship space in uplifting rays. The chapel is white Gothic carved stone and opulent at that. A must see for those in or visiting the city. Also, a great view point. Huge community and a lot of young families. Seemed welcoming to every walk of life, creed color etc. Trying to get involved in outreach ministries and EFM is tricky and guarded. An old priest there made no apologies about her cold and slow return of my interest/inquiries. She had the "its the way it has always been done" attitude classic in so many organizations. I did find the priest at the weekday Eucharist to be friendly and warm in personality.
Kyle Brown
Beautiful old church and super friendly people.
You can meet a new community or find a corner to sit in and just soak it in.
As they say "No matter where you are on your journey, YOU are welcome here"
Don't miss an opportunity to attend Compline on Sunday evenings, it is magical.
David Olsen
An important center of music in Seattle, St. Mark's is a beautiful church, with a great acoustic for the style of music they do so well here. Evensong and Compline are incredible services that you should make time to be at. A beautiful way to finish the day on a calming, contemplative note.
Perry Low
Grand yet stylishly industrial ... Love the labyrinth!
Tom Elwood
Sunday night "Compline" (rhymes with discipline) is a totally sung service that echoes around the entire high-ceilinged church. People come in their pajamas and (some) lie on the floor - it's an experience like no other. Incredibly beautiful and unforgettable.
Patricia Honeysuckle
Ascension Sunday's music was very interesting and spiritually moving. It was so appropriate for the Ascension.. I really was amazed to see and hear the percussion that was added to the music.. So much texture..!!
Julia Moss
A beautiful welcoming space open for worship or other events. Recently remodeled it is both modern and classic. Easy to find and great parking for being in North capital hill.
Brent Williams
It's a beautiful cathedral. I go to a different church in Seattle, so I've only be to Sunday night compline service, but it was incredibly peaceful and a great night of worship.
Nic Mather
What a wonderful place to worship. Beautiful space, beautiful music, beautiful liturgy. Welcoming, inviting, accepting, affirming, if you are seeking a house of worship in Seattle, then look here first.
Ronda Ramsey
We went for women's choir. It was beautiful! People laying on the floor was a little disrespectful I felt, but for me and my daughter it was a terrific experience.
Art Ganung
Monks song Sindays 930pm sometimes you luck out with an organ rehearsal.
Jerome Espinosa Baladad
It's a reinterpretation of the typical cathedral but with a certain bent on materials used, plus a feel that it is still an ongoing project but more or less done at this time. Peaceful, quiet interiors.
Laura Musikanski
Complain. 9:30 pm Sundays. If you don’t know what I mean do yourself a solid and trust me. Bring a blanket and pillow. And your best friend. Drive around back for free parking. ( go a little early to take in the view).
Don’t sit down on a seat. Find a spot to lie.
It will be a memory to keep.
TAke your friends, take your family. Don’t worry about the concept of religion just enjoy the experience.
Derek Swindoll
Very quaint cathedral. I usually go for the Compline. The huge organ at the back sounds great! Parking isnt much of a hastle either, but it can fill up quickly.
Ginny Phillips Allen
Open space, quality vocal and organ musical offerings, formal space with informal participants lying on blankets barefoot, sitting/lying on blankets on chancel, come as you are whether 20-90 participating as seems appropriate to you in a sacred space to seek God.
J R
