Very small but cozy place. I was greeted by great smelling cooking from the kitchen. I then was greeted with a welcoming smile and as I explained that it's my first time, I was asked what I was craving for to which I replied "fish!" I was immediately recommended the catfish - which I used to eat when I was growing up in the Philippines. I could get 2 fillet meal for $14.99 or 1 fillet meal for $13.99 - that extra dollar for another fillet was too hard to pass up! There were many choices for 2 sides that came with the meal but I picked collards and potato salad. The other choices were Cole slaw, rice, cabbage... I say on the line chair while waiting for my meal to be prepared. Had to be takeout as there aren't chairs or tables. I was able to admire the unique art pieces and display: including a mirror with colorful plastic utensils as backdrop for the mirror. I got to taste my meal and it was delicious and heart warming - a hug for my tummy: the catfish fillets were perfectly seasoned and not burnt or oily. Collard greens were cooked perfectly and the potato salad was hearty. Can't wait to try the other fish meals. Highly recommend this place!

Everytime I tell myself to support a black business I get disappointed. The lady taking the order was just snappy and had an attitude. I wanted to walk away but in my head I told myself “maybe she’s having a bad day” (no excuse of course). I ordered chopped bbq large for my son and large catfish w/greens and mac&cheese for myself. The one roll that was in there was partially opened so had to throw that out. there was a paper towel in my food I’m assuming to soak up the grease from the fish but come on. The paper towel was all wet and soggy over the greens and mac&cheese. My son only received a small thing of bbq sauce for his bbq. But overall the food was ok. Just the service experience turned me off.

The food here is absolutely the best! My go to is the cat fish dinner, yams and potato salad. I love love love their food. It is my go-to comfort food for when I am feeling down and it always makes me happy. Definitely check this place out!

I bought turkey wing dinner. I ordered mac & cheese and collards, but the college were not ready. So then I ordered yams. The wings and yams was pretty good. However, the mac & cheese was definitely box. It was a far cry from homemade mac & cheese, which I love. I’m not sure if I’ll go back there again.

Omg. So delish! Very easy to find, I walked in and was immediately greeted! It was just like talking to my auntie! I ordered 2 whiting dinners with cabbage okra, Mac and cheese and collards. MY GOD it was just what I needed. So tasty, flavorful, and so much of it. She brought it to my car and I told her I'd make sure to tell yall she is a beautiful QUEEN! Lol. I'll certainly be back . Visiting this place was a highlight to my day. Good vibes. Good soul food

Solid soul food spot. The staff was friendly. Great value for the cost! I got the large smothered pork chops meal with Mac and cheese and potato salad. For about $12 it was enough for TWO meals. Carry out only, as there wasn't really seating to eat.

Love the BBQ sandwich and the Jerk Chicken. The ribs will be my next dish to try. I'm not a huge fan of pig feet, but My mom loves pig feet, but it seems like a lot of restaurants don't know how to cook them. When it comes to pig feet, Ellen knows what she's doing. She gives my mom nice size pig feet with some potato salad, and my mom is good to go. Go to Ellen's if you want some good soul food.

Y'all when I tell you I was a few bites in and had to STOP TO WRITE A REVIEW?!?!?!? Babyyyy, please don't tell my mama, but these yams and turkey wings are better than hers. And the collard greens are *chef's kiss*. I see right now me and Ms Ellen are about to have a regular thing going on. Really friendly service is the cherry on top. Try it. You won't regret it

I first have to say as my family and I walk in at 6:55pm not know thing they close at 7. They let us know that they were about to close and we were going to leave but Ellen insisted that we order and she would turn the fryers back on. It was such a delight knowing that there are still nice descent people out there. We were extremely grateful. The food was outstanding and I would recommend this place to everyone!!! We can not wait to go back.

The bomb! I went in yesterday and ordered the Large Catfish dinner collards and yams and hunnnayy let me tell u it slapped! The food was so good so much that I went to sleep dreaming about it and woke up and got some more..I had to make sure I wasnt dreaming! This place is definitely the truth and they are not stingy with the food either. Prepare to be wow'd! Thank you so much Ellen! This is the best soul food place around! Yeah i said it!!

My family and I were on vacation at Virginia Beach from TN, and wanted down home cooking. Many of the places that were recommended to us, didn't live up to our expectations once we were seated. And so, we would leave. But once we found Ellen's online, and saw the reviews, and pics of the food, we wanted to try it out. This time we were not disappointed. I hadn't had fish that good in years. My entire family enjoyed the food and the social experience(they are down to earth..) there at Ellen's, and highly recommend them to all.

Tried the whiting fish, cabbage, and mac 'n' cheese. The food was okay, but it wasn't great. I do like that the meals were prepared warm and ready-to-eat upon order pick-up. However, the fish was not fully fileted and the cabbage was very mushy. I wanted to give this place the benefit of the doubt, but more attention-to-detail needs to be placed into the food.

Discovered this place a while back and they are delicious! My favorite is the fried catfish and their sides taste so fresh! Owner is super nice and welcomes anyone. I’ve also tried their jerk chicken and bbq chicken, both delicious! Portions are really big even if you don’t get the dinner size, it’s pretty great!

I only wish I'd checked this place out sooner. I grew up around southern cooking and Ellen's nails it. The jerk chicken is the right combination of spicy and flavorful (you feel the heat, trust me) and everything tastes so fresh! They take care of students and have great selections that make it seem like home.

The staff and owner are genuinely and naturally friendly. As soon as we came into the facility, we were welcomed to a smile and a warm southern greeting. Although they mentioned they didn't have any greens, the quick service , tasteful meal and large portions was enough for me to give it 5 stars. In addition, this is a mostly take out place, so call ahead so meal will be ready, but your wait will not be long. I had 8 full orders I placed when I arrived and it took 15 min, so service is quick, by my opinion. We were on vacation. In a time where customer service is fallling, Ellen's is getting it right. Seriously the best food around here! The owner, Ellen, is an amazing woman. When I ordered from here on grubhub, I was under the impression that the food would be delivered to me. When I got the text that my food was ready it told me to go pick it up. I don't have a car and I was home alone so there was no way for me to do that. I called Ellen and made her aware of the situation. She was extremely patient and came and delivered the food to me herself. She went above and beyond for me, and even threw in a piece of cornbread. On top of that, the food is very affordable and for the service and quality of the meal I would pay much more than I did! I will recommend this place to everyone I know.

This place has a limited menu for meats. They mainly serve pork with a few options of fried fish or chicken. The fried fish is ok not really seasoned well and I ordered a large plate and my serving size was small with 4 pieces and the fish pieces are thin. I can say the mac n cheese was good along with the yams.

First time visiting this little gem of a restaurant...food was DELICIOUS, portions were GENEROUS, customer service was AMAZING...can't say enough good about it. Enjoyed chatting with them the few minutes it took to get my food. I tried the whiting, with corn and mac and cheese. Everything was seasoned just right. It was ok..... Honestly slightly expensive for the quality. It was like a regular Sunday meal you can make at home, (my yams are better). If I am paying over $10 for a plate I want it to be something I can't just make myself. Just my opinion.

Not enough seasoning on the food .... greens taste like it came out of can.. .you needs better cooks or retrained the crew.you have... gravy not bad on the pork chop... rice n gravy it doesn't have the same taste as gravy on the pork chop.....maybe it because it was order on the side not sure...just keep it real....now if you're the type that don't like seasoning on your food that is the best place to go....

Originally ordered Pigs Feet of a grub hub and smothered porkcchop sandwich, gravy and rice, Mac and string beans. After placing my order the company called and said they didn’t have anymore pigs feet but commodated for the Turkey Wing dinner at no extra charge (which I appreciated) the food was SOOOOO GOOOOOD!! OMG. The proportion was enough to feed 2 adults. Would highly recommend
