Amato's is the premier spot for Italian sandwiches in Portland. Today, we stopped there to grab a late lunch. As usual, we got great sandwiches! The person who took our orders was pleasant and fun to talk with. The sandwiches were ready. Very quickly. The downside here is a lack of indoor seating. We had to go back to our car to eat. It was 19⁰ today. So no atmosphere. It's better in warm weather with the outside tables. However, the other restaurants in town don't have the sandwiches!

Our Uber driver told us Amato's is the home of the original Italian sub. Not sure if that's true, but it was one of the best I've had. This location only has 4 inside stools at the counter, but a nice outdoor patio that I am sure would be great during the busy season when it's warmer.

Delicious food 😍 these guys do a great job. Stopped here for a quick lunch. I today I tried their tuna hoagie small one. Came out fast , no issues , good quality food here I would definitely recommend you stop by if you are in the area and looking for a good sandwich shop. They also to catering if you have a large group and want to supply them with a large order of food all at the same time. Just need to call ahead of time and schedule it.

I know, its Lobster. But this is where the locals go. While it may look like just a Sub Sandwich Pizza shop, it's way better! Could not help myself, returned every chance I had while working in Portland. I had their traditional Italian but I loved the all meat calzone! 1902 is when it all started and it is well worth a one time stop for you, and better yet, it's reasonable.

When I was young, my dad would always stop here to pick up sandwiches for us and bring them home to Waterville. The sandwiches were always fresh and fantastic. I love the flavors and I'm not big on ham! When I am craving a Ham Italian...it's always Amato's! Love this place!!

Had a chicken bacon ranch wrap which I was expecting to be similarly Subway's but was pleasantly surprised to see that it was not. Much larger, bacon was crispy, and chicken was cooked well. No throwing it in a "toaster" here. Constant stream of customers too so apparently this place is popular. From my experience I can see why.

My family has been going here since we moved to Portland, and for a while my dad was working there. Amato's will always hold a special place in my heart for the wonderful food and the staff that has been like extended family for over a decade.

This rating is all about that Classic Italian sandwich. The quality I'm used to from other establishments is basically around some sort of brick oven bread, authentic Italian cold cuts,etc. Amato's was different. It was open-face, with a slight fold lengthwise. It had crisp fresh peppers, sliced olives and some very good quality tomato slices over an excellent combination of cold cuts and provolone. It was more than drizzled with olive oil and vinegar. Adding a couple of sour pickle slices to all this nailed it! The bread was chewy white. Altogether, it's hard to describe how delicious this was. Eating it felt definitely like a sandwich, but also somehow like pizza, and maybe a little salad. Very satisfying, I look forward to having another on my next trip to Portland!

Great made to order sandwiches as well as pasta's, wraps, As well as pizza's, Etc. I recommend it to anybody looking for an old fashion Italian sandwich. Not to mention their slices of cake's of different varieties of flavors. I personally like their food.

There are plenty of sandwiches I love, but the the Amato's Italian still hits the spot in a way only an Amato's Italian can. The India St. shop has great service, and even when it's busy, the food comes quickly. I'm also a big fan of their little stuffers. There is a ramp connected to the entrance and the business is wheelchair accessible.

Overpriced. Ordered sandwich platters and they filled all the sandwiches with onions and not much else. We had to dump the onions out of the sandwiches just so they would be edible.

Ive been to this location many times because they are open later, and would often regret it. Everything they make is overpriced. Special shout out to the pazzo bread... 25 cents worth of dough soaked with oil and cheese... you may find it makes an excellent laxative. My favorite was the tuna sandwich, it goes together well with the bread and veggies.

This is where you go to get sandwiches. This is also where you go to get chips. If you are coming here expecting hand-holding service, go elsewhere. This is a sandwich shop and a damn good one at that. Come in, read the screen menus or grab a paper one, make a decision, place your damn order and bail. Boom. Protip: oil on the side.

If your want to come for a fine Italian sub, this is the place. They serve multiple versions of the Italian sandwich. They also have a full catalog of many different Italian foods. Pasta, calzone... Even dessert. When I am in Maine on vacation from New Hampshire I have to stop in.

Can I give a 10 star rating? It's that good! Joseph Amato did the first Classic Italian sandwich in 1902. I had the classic 3 meat Italian. It was delicious! The bread was so soft and the meat was fresh. It had 3 kinds of meat, cheese, oil, tomato, pickle, onion, olives and salt and pepper. Its wrapped in wax paper. They also make delicious pizza to order. If you want a salad, they have several to choose from. There is Anti-pasta salad, Greek and a variety of others. They have Tiramisu, brownies, and Whoopie pies for dessert. And they have a selection of wine and other drinks.

Went two nights in a row. First night, had a calzone. Amazing. Spent $15 which included waters and mozzarella sticks. Second night, had a custom pizza. Phenomenal. They recommend pazzo bread, I got it, and it was wonderful. Spent $19 for the pizza, bread and drinks. Litre of Poland Spring is 2 for $3. Great service, good prices. Definitely recommend.

I'll tell you what, I'm a bit of a "foodie" and I have pretty high expectations but I was absolutely blown away by Amato's lobster roll. Just imagine the freshest lobster meat you've ever had tossed with a little mayo and served on a soft Italian roll. I have had lobster rolls all over the city and I would rather pay $12.95 for the lobster roll I had at Amato's than the smaller $16 lobster roll at Eventide. Don't get me wrong, Eventide's brown butter lobster roll is delicious but it's a distant second compared to the one I had at Amato's. Just saying. See for yourself. On another note there was a new cashier who wasn't quite up to speed but the gentleman making the sandwich was super friendly. I ❤️ Amato's.

Also has a full convenience store style selection of chips and bottled drinks (soda, juice, tea, water, milk, etc.) plus beer and wine. Outdoor seating only. Recommend ordering ahead due to wait times. Note: all calzones come with diced tomato in them (was not very happy with that surprise with my steak and cheese).

The basic Maine Italian sandwich -- ham, cheese, sour pickle, onion, tomato, green pepper, olive, s+p+oil on a soft almost doughy sub roll. Some places do it slightly better but Amato's is everywhere and fairly consistent. They do pickles right, but the slicing of the veg onto the sandwich out of hand sometimes leads to unwieldy piles of large chunks that slide onto your shirt and pants when you attempt to eat, even if you unwrap the wax paper a little at a time.

Every trip to Portland, I get authentic Italian sandwiches from Amato's because they have them on menu made w prosciutto, capicola and provolone on which they'll put pure Olive oil if you request it... This is the best version of a Maine-style Italian Sandwich possible (I ask for the pickles on the side so they don't overpower the subtle flavors)
