A lot of places like this don't hold up to the hype. I'm glad to say this place did a good job of showing why it's well regarded in this area. The rice and beans and the macaroni and cheese were definitely tasty and the fried chicken and catfish was great as well. The menu seemed a little bit limited but in the grand scheme of things the menu has everything a restaurant like this needs. I feel the food was slightly pricey but it wasn't terrible. Finally the lemonade was a good addition to the meal.

Dear Gladys and Big Mama's Staff, it is with much Love and Gratitude that I submit this review for excellent food that was catered for our daughters 40th birthday celebration. Everyone enjoyed EVERYTHING immensely! Catfish, grilled chicken and turkey sliders, okra, lasagna blossoms, Chicken wings and vegetable tray. We truly appreciate the Love and culinary care that went into the preparation as well as the friendly service in helping us load to bring home. Had the classic chicken sandwich and loved it! Staff are very friendly and prices aren't bad at all especially for how tasty it is. Cranberry tea was really good in my opinion but others in my family tried it and was iffy about it so it just depends on your taste. Will definitely be going back!

Got the chicken and cinnamon roll waffle. It comes with roughly 6-8 wings and 2 waffles. Personally, once I devoured my chicken, I could barely finish one waffle. I could've done with just one and been great. I suggest giving both options for 1 or 2 waffles instead of it automatically coming with 2. Nice atmosphere and would definitely recommend

This was my second time at Big Mama's, my first in the new location. I am blessed to have eaten at the original Big Mama's location a number of years ago and had a lovely conversation with her. I was so sad to read about her passing. Her daughter, Gladys, has the same heart and soul that Big Mama had and both were so warm and welcoming. I was part of a group tour and was fortunate to get to sample a wide variety of the food. My personal favorites were the black eyed peas and of course the chicken. I don't normally like sweet potatoes but after having them here and sampling the sweet potato pie ice cream, I'm a convert. Give them a try, even if you don't typically enjoy them!

I have nothing but fond memories of this restaurant. Great comfort food from an amazing family. EVERYTHING is delicious--especially that fried chicken! Be sure to save room for dessert--they have a killer sweet potato cheesecake that is TO DIE FOR! It's tucked away in a unique location. When you're close, just follow your nose! Food was amazing!! I tasted the love and soul that was added to this flavorful chicken. My absolute favorite was the Mac and cheese! Do yourself a favor and get the Mac and cheese. The best I have ever had in my life!! I ordered the cheese cake but they were sold out. So definitely next time. Really enjoyed Big Mama’s Kitchen!

Oven fried chicken at its best!! The Mac and cheese is really good. I thought that it might be but I had my suspicions the smashed potatoes with chicken gravy. Was really on point. The catfish was amazing. I don’t live in this state but when I come back, I’m looking for Big Mama!

Found this place on the internet. Heading to Omaha Nebraska from California we are always on the look out for good unique places to eat. I must say I was surprised to find this restaurant in the dining hall of the college! The women working here we're so nice! We had the original and the hot chicken sandwich and it was so good. And they have an array of home made sauces that are a must try. A great selection of fried chicken and other food. They were making homemade corn bread muffins when we were there that looked and smelled really good! I highly recommend finding this place!

We ordered the fried chicken and catfish with a coke and a watermelon lemonade and were very pleased with how everything turned out. The macaroni and cheese was some of the best macaroni and cheese that I’ve ever had and the catfish had the perfect crunch to it. I can’t wait to go back to big mama’s one day.

I get the impression that this place used to be way more popular back at its old location. The food was fine and the employees were nice, but it's really expensive. I'm from Georgia and miss southern food, but $27 for a 2 piece chicken plate with 1 side of collard greens, tea, and sweet potato pie is pretty expensive, especially considering it's counter service, not even a sit down place. $3.50 for a small, sticky cup of sweet tea with no refills is silly. The location is hidden on the second floor of a weird auxiliary food court for a satellite campus of Creighton. There aren't even napkins readily available in the space, and there's sports blasting loudly on the tvs in there. It felt like a gentrified husk of what the old pictures show it used to be. There was hardly anyone in there despite it being peak lunchtime on a Saturday. I really, really wanted to like it. Like I said, I really miss southern food.

Super yummy. Really enjoyed my spicy chicken sandwich and the Mac and cheese. Lemonade was good too. It was pretty empty when we went. The seating shares space with a couple other places. They had high chairs in the corner too.

I ordered for lunch through GrubHub. I got the fried chicken, fried catfish and mac n cheese. My food was absolutely delicious! The fried chicken reminded me of my mother's chicken. The fish wasn't wet and mushy like other places. I was pleasantly surprised and will order again!

I ALWAYS get STUFFED when I order the catfish sandwich and fries!! The staff is ALWAYS friendly & the line to order CAN get lengthy so get there EARLY before the lunch hour is in full swing. Regardless of how long the wait to order/receive your order takes, the QUALITY of the food is VERY DELICIOUS!!

Considering it’s rich history, I was a bit disappointed. We ordered through a window and ate in a food gathering place. Nice accommodations for eating, just not very warm and inviting. Felt like a mall food court. Food was good, we had some fried chicken, catfish, collard greens, fried okra and the fried chicken sandwich. All were perfectly done but the greens were a bit bland. The reason for going was to get the acclaimed Afro original sandwich but it was not available. Not sure if this is an everyday thing but it was on Saturday, February 5.

The oven fried chicken and catfish are absolutely delicious! Would totally eat either one of those again, and often. The collard greens were pretty good, with a little heat in the flavor, but I don't have anything to compare them to. I have not had greens very often. I would get them again also. My wife was not impressed with the Mac and cheese, decent but not amazing. We had to change our order because they ran out of the chicken, and it was only 4 PM. They said it would take 45 minutes to cook more. My wife had to get a sandwich instead. It was also good, but not amazing.

Fried Chicken was juicy but soggy like it had been in a the warmer for a while. Mac and cheese was super salty. Collard greens were just ok. Corned bread and sweet potato cheesecake were to die for tho. Also lemonade super sweet.

If you like/love oven fried chicken this is the place for you… but to a person who loves fried chicken you must get use to the taste… the mac/chesse was the boom but a little salty… in fact the whole meal was a little salty which is way you get the 3 star… would I eat this place again… maybe….we shall see… my rating is 3.5 out of 5

Everything I wanted it to be. I first saw this restaurant featured on Diners, Drive ins and Dives and wanted to check them out next time I was in Omaha. I was NOT disappointed. My fiancée and I ordered the half chicken and half catfish platter with collard greens, mac n cheese, candied yams and cabbage and it was delicious, the chicken was light and crispy and the catfish was the same way. The part that elevated the chicken was the seasoning. I tasted a hint of Cajun spice but it wasn't overpowering with it. Definitely a must try if you're ever in Omaha!

Warm, friendly atmosphere and great food. I tried the catfish sandwich, oven fried chicken, smoked wings, sweet potato cheesecake, greens and sweet potato pudding. The place was hard to find, but I persisted and wasn't disappointed. I didn't enjoy the oven fried chicken as much as regular fried chicken, but it wasn't bad. More like a crusty baked chicken. The greens were as good as I've ever had, and the sweet potato pudding was fantastic. The catfish sandwich was great, crispy and moist, and after sitting for about 10 minutes while I ate my chicken, still hot enough to burn my mouth. The wings were smokey, juicy and tender. I tried the regular BBQ sauce, which was good, although they have a hotter "afro" sauce. The cheese cake was good, but not great.

I was craving Max N Cheese, and figured Big Mama's was my best bet for good wholesome Mac n Cheese in Omaha after considering a few other options.... and I was correct. So gooey, Cheesy, and flavorful, just what I needed, and what I knew I couldn't find anywhere else!!! I got a few other things, they were tasty too, but that Mac is A1.

From the beginning- calling to place my order the service was AMAZING - when I called back to pay with my card so I didn’t have to come inside (curb side pick up ) the service was AMAZING! When I arrived I called and they came and brought out my order , and she was so nice and the food was still hot :) . I’m from Denver visiting and wanted to try all the black owned restaurants- this one by far is my favorite one ! Great food - Great vibes and energy ! Would recommend to anyone . I got the 2 piece chicken meal with Mac n cheese , yams - cornbread and OMG :) !!!!!!!

My boyfriend and I went to Big Mama's Kitchen for the first time today but it definitely will not be our last! After my first bite of the oven fried chicken I knew it was the best chicken I have ever had in my life! Everything about my meal was amazing. The staff was freindly and the atmosphere was nice. HIGHLY recommend this restaurant to anyone who will listen! We had fried green tomatoes & greens with cornbread to start. (That alone was worth the drive from Papillion.) We found Big Mama’s at Taste of Omaha & fell madly in live with their food. I had the cranberry iced tea. Was refreshing & not overly sweet. Loved it. We also ordered their award-winning fried chicken with black beans, and the daily special, chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes. Both entrees were mouth-watering. To top off our meal we both had a dish of home-made ice cream. He ordered the peach cobbler ice cream & I ordered the sweet potato pie ice cream. Both delicious & perfectly flavored. I loved finding big chunks of pie crust! Over-all we give Big Mama’s Kitchen & Catering a 5/5! Will defiantly return for chicken & waffles. Portions are quite generous — looking forward to our leftovers! Service was friendly & we felt perfectly welcomed & at home. Only regret was not ordering more sides to try. Sad to know we’ll never have the pleasure of meeting Mama herself. But what a wonderful legacy she has left. Can’t wait to return for more soul food!!!

Gluten free fried chicken was delicious. Be prepared to wait for good things. 45 min for chicken done right. 1-2 day notice for other items made gluten free. Fried okra, fried green tomatoes, mashed potatoes and gravy. Because they cater, they can accommodate just about any allergy need.

Big Mama’s catered the food for a party of 27 and it was all fantastic — Gouda mac-n-cheese bites, fried okra with plum sauce, fried chicken, meatloaf, mashed taters, greens, cornbread, sweet potato pudding & sweet potato cheesecake. Went for brunch on a Sunday for the lovely Chicken and Waffles dish. Whenever I need a good meal to remind me of Grandma's cooking I come to Big Mama's. I've always loved the vibe here with the family photos on the walls and the Vintage drinking glasses. Sometimes it feels good to have a moment and reminisce. A very nostalgic experience. Be sure to catch the vibe before they moved to the new 75 North property this fall. Definitely worth the visit!

What a wonderland of GREAT food. Love having breakfast on Sunday mornings. Sausage gravy and bisquits with eggs. Their food will make you feel like you are eating in the deep south. The desserts are fantastic. Really nice people waiting tables, the owner stops at the tables and even the cooks say hello. Big Mama's is the best, and probably my favorite restaurant in Omaha. The food is top notch. If you're not sure what to order, I recommend Big Mama's Meatloaf. It's hard to beat a good plate of home-style meatloaf, cornbread, mashed potatoes, and some french fries - especially when it's done well, and it is definitely done well here. As if the food wasn't good enough, another thing I really like about this restaurant is that they treat me like an actual person, not just a number like most places. The staff here remembers my name and knows what I usually order which really blows me away. You just don't get that kind of service anywhere else these days. They actually value you as an individual customer, which is more than I can say for 99% of other businesses I go to, and I think that's important.

Big Mama’s Kitchen and Catering!!! You are Awesome!! As you walk in the smell of tantalizing comfort foods hit your nostrils and your mouth starts watering. Loved the plum sauce as a condiment for my fried okra, delicious tasty catfish, and moist and delicious cornbread! Very comforting atmosphere just like at home in your family’s kitchen. The staff very friendly and welcoming and Big Mama even sat at our table to chat with my friend and I as we ate. It was a great experience that every person should have! First visit for a tasty breakfast. Had the Sweet potato pancakes which might be the best pancakes in Omaha. Service was good and cheery but a tad slow but what's the rush?! Can't wait to get back to try the cinnamon roll waffles.

I was very excited about this place, as it had been on my radar for a while. Stopped in for lunch today and was... underwhelmed. Good fried chicken, soupy finely chopped greens, decent Mac and cheese, crumbly dry cornbread and the most expensive lemonade I've ever had. With tip, I paid almost $20 for a small plate of food that was all pre-cooked and a drink where my first refill was to go. Service was friendly, but not as urgent as I thought it could have been. Might give this place another try in the future, but was kind of disappointed today.

Spicy fried coliflower was exceptional. Afro Burger (not a burger) was fantastic. Really sad there wasn't larger portions! If I had the stomach I would try everything on the menu! Only knock was the food took a bit longer to come out than expected and I was one of two tables.

They messed up my order. I paid $48 bucks for my order and they gave me wrong stuff, and the bad part is i gave the waitress a pretty big tip, for a takeout! I'm going to check my meal before leaving this place if I ever go again. Taste of food was good though. They had something called lemon pie, which i tried, which was sub par. It still has lemon rinds cooked into the pie. Not my thing, as the rind was bitter. I won't get that ever again.

Great food everything made fresh to order ( does take a little time) and good service. At least someone knows how to make good food here.

I don't even know where to start. When you walk through the door you instantly know you've come to the right place. Amazing smell, only thing better is the food! The things to get: Afro burger (we ordered another one near the end of our meal), MAC AND CHEESE (it's the best I've ever had), red velvet cheesecake ice cream (homemade). Her granddaughter took our order and was really sweet and Big Mama came out and talked with us after the meal. Just amazing people serving amazing food. P.S. It can be a little difficult to find, it's in the school cafeteria (very cool once you see it). So if you're confused because you're at a school, time to park and go inside!

My meal: Creamy Mashed sweet potato pudding with Brown sugar and nuts Typical corn bread with a sweet taste of honey butter served Raspberry ice tea Mama came out of the kitchen to take a photo with me. I told her I was from South Omaha. She asked what sticker I had on my phone? I said it was commemorative of 50 yrs since the Vietnam war. She said she was there 1964 with the Navy. I told her my history with the 173rd Airborne brigade US Army. We had a nice conversation and laugh about things. I told her I enjoyed my meal.

Growing up in South Georgia, I know a thing or two about all things southern comfort food. Don't go in here expecting flare or elegance- no, go in here expecting some of the best fried dishes in the Omaha metro area! There chicken fried steak is fire, and the sides are all fantastic! Again, not fantastic in the "fancy-flashy half an almond per plate drizzled in Swiss handmade chocolate" kind of way- but rather the "omg this meal completes me", true homestyle meal kind of way.

Kinda hard to find, but look for the signs which lead to a building that looks like or maybe is a school. It's on 2nd flr. Ordered a takeout, with a minimal wait. Staff helpful and friendly. Food was delicious, esp. collard greens. Great homestyle soul food. My only con is the serving sizes of the sides were very small. Seemed like maybe 2 tablespoons of greens & the mac/cheese. Would definitely visit again and maybe pay a 'little' extra for more side portions.

They catered an event and were serving smoked chicken, fried catfish, mac and cheese, greens, cornbread. And dessert they had peacan and sweet potato pies. An awesome surprise with great home cooking

Have not been to BIG MAMA'S since the old site but managed to drop in this time to the new location in the astounding HIGHLANDER complex, an innovative community hub for this growing Omaha neighbourhood. Sadly Ms Barron had left us in 2018 but I was priviledged to briefly meet and chat with her daughter, Gladys Harrison, who has brought her mother's idea of continued community service to fruition. I shall plan my next trip for (HOPEFULLY) better weather and more time to devour some more fried chicken and the always heavenly SWEET POTATO PIE ICE CREAM!!!
