Reviews of John's Deli
Kevin Eng Wu
I was craving some pastrami and I was nearby. This is the Ari Gold, it has pastrami, melted Swiss cheese and brown mustard. The bread was crunchy on the outside but soft on the inside. This is my second time here but definitely coming back every time I have the chance.
I got there around 430pm on a Thursday and it was empty but when I left there was a line formed. They make the sandwiches on the fly so it takes some 10-15 minutes per order, depending on how big of a party you’re with.

I was in the area, & in the mood for cold cut sandwich. For starters, they have so many options to choose from, cold/hot sandwiches and hot food. The names of their sandwiches are pretty cool, it’s From movies and famous shows. Although the food is good, the service sucks. Idk if it was me, or the employees, but one of us seemed lost. The guy asked me what would I like to order, but then seemed confused when I ordered. It took him a little while to get it together. It was simple because We had cold cut sandwiches and ordered a side of fried ravioli. I heard this place used to be really good back in the days, but not so much now. I’ll go back again & try a hot sandwich next time.

Gravy. Is. To. Die. For. Roast beef sandwich... Mozzarella Carrozza... Lester Diamond sandwich... I can't with this place! It's amazing. I just moved back to Brooklyn last year and hadn't had John's Deli in over 20 years so coming back was a dream for my senses. They are NOT stingy with meat here. The gravy is so decadent I order an extra on the side to use on my dinners. I'm not going to lie to you people .. I've also finished it off like it was soup a few times.

I got here at 230pm on a Friday and it was not that busy and ordered the Johnny roast beef with onions, mozzarella and sauce. The meat was fresh and the bread crispy but it was missing something that I could boost this review to 5 stars. Price is ok and there is indoor sitting is fine.

I originally wanted to order chicken cheese fries, total came out to $30. I kindly said never mind and instead asked for a chicken sandwich on a hero with mozzarella cheese, total came out to $11.
The sandwich was literally chicken cutlet and mozzarella cheese that's it. Perhaps it was my fault for not requesting lettuce, tomato, or other toppings but I mean I have ordered a chicken sandwhich countless of times in hundreds of location, lettuce, tomato is usually a must.
Either way, sandwich was good, extremely dry but good.
Service was fast and cashier was nice.

Great roastbeef sandwhich with gravy.
This placed was on my list and I was in the area so I had to give it a try. Good size sandwhich overall. The meat, cheese, and onions were all very fresh. I was surprised with the taste of the gravy. It was very savory but for some reason I was expecting a balsamic taste because of the color, there was not.
The place it self is small but they do have tables. For sure worth a stop in if you're near there.

Love Johns, it's a phenomenal deli, sandwiches are always thick with generous piles of meat! Definitely get your money's worth here.
Gun Slinging Gringo
Not the same place it was years ago but it’s still John’s Deli. So you gotta give a 5 star review just for the name.
todd tofil
Great tasting hero. Aka grinder. Not expensive.
Elizabeth Maldonado
This was my 1st time coming to this place. I hear that it Made world records for their food. I thought my beef cheese and onion sandwich was delicious. How ever I wasn't too fond of the rice ball, Fried raviolis or the ice cream. The service was great and the prices are decent. They seem to be very calming and organised but they don't have a public bathroom. Since we're still in a pandemic, we could only eat outside. That is a little bit of the inconvenience since it was cold.
Jasinta Kydd
Very good roastbeef sandwich and heros. They also have salads if your trying to do keto. My husband and I had similar sandwich like this many moons ago. So it feels hood to find them once again. Also u can get dipping sauce on the side. Please be patient because the food is fresh.

The best roast beeef thus far, I drive from the Bronx to get this delicious sub. Oh and let’s not forget the black gravy, must grace an extra order on the side. I won’t ever eat a roast beef sub anywhere else.
Mike Martino
Fantastic..the food is marvelous parking is easy staff is super friendly and service is fast

This place has some of the best roast beef I've had in a while! Service was quick and friendly l. Sandwiches came out hot and super tasty. Got the Ray Dovan and the John's Classic Roast Beef. Everything was great!!!

I actually found this place while I was looking for a new apartment and I saw the big mural saying "Hero King" and something about being the best heroes in Brooklyn so I defiantly said to myself, "let's see if that's true." I'm from a very Italian part of Connecticut and we know what's actually good and for the most part I've been continually let down by NYC's 'Italian' food, so I was ready for a challenge.
All I have to say is wow, they really are the Hero King because it was AMAZING. I always go for the Duchess of Bay Ridge and it's always amazing, as is everything else on their menu (they have a pretty solid Penne alla Vodka, too, which is no small feat). Their tomatoes always taste perfect even if they're out of season, I have no idea how they do it.
Needless to say if you're reading this because you're unsure of where to go or where to try from, John's Deli is the place. It's better than the 'gold standard/old school' places you'll read about on every Brooklyn food list on the internet, it's the real deal.

Vegetarian review: The eggplant parmesan sandwich (Adrian Balboa) on a roll was absolutely fresh, crunchy and juicy. I added some hot peppers (cherry) but I don't recommend them and instead, request to add red chili flakes into the sauce because the vinegar in the peppers is too dominating.
My only wish is that their sauce was a bit more flavorful. Next time, I will try it on the hero.
My gold standard for eggplant parmesan is Santini's in Arlington, Virginia and next on my list is Paneantico.
Chris Escue
This place is a spot! Tons of sandwiches with other items. My wife got a breakfast sandwich, Jesse Katsopolis (at 11:30 AM) and I got the Glengarry (Tuesday special) and some pasta fagioli. The soup was great and I’d definitely try the others based on it. I’d also like to try some of the breakfast sandwiches as they seemed pretty legit. Looking forward to coming back here again soon and getting Johnny Roastbeef.
Ted L.
The best gravy! Must go to John's Deli for the roast beef hero. Oh yeah, grab a rice ball....delish!
Donisha Lloyd
I loved the chicken pesto sandwich ... and the Fact that Wyandanch's Legendary "Rakim" had a pic on the wall along with Biggie Smalls. I knew I was in the right spot
spirituelle j
I think my chicken came a little undercooked, but i called the store back and the woman working the phone was super understanding and assured me they would send me a new sandwich and check to make sure it’s cooked. It was super fast and she called me to let me know it was on the way. 5 star customer service for sure.

Historic deli with one of the best sandwiches and Italian dishes in Brooklyn ... get the signature Roast Beef with fresh mozzarella and au jois gravy on the side ... fried raviolis, broccoli rabe, mac and cheese ... classic stuff ...
Kelly Wu
Classic sammiches. I believe they're best known for their roast beef with gravy so thick it stays on the meat and not on your hands. Potato croquettes are stuffed with ham, cheese and scallions, awesome.
Eric Murphy: chicken cutlet, fresh mozzarella and roasted red peppers
rene andino
Same famous deli for decades! It's a guaranteed great sandwich. The menu is hyterical and also historical. Try their pistachio truffle ice cream. There ice creams are a hidden treasure.
Sabrina Salem Rose-Weinberg
Ok so John's has to be one of the best sandwich joints I've been too. Both when I was a carnivore and now a vegetarian. Everything is always fresh. Not just tastes fresh, but legit has to be fresh. I got the eggplant and mozz. With the tomato salad today and it tasted like they just baked the bread for my sandwich. I love this place. Sucks I live on the other side of the city from here, but I'll always come here as a treat when I'm at my safety classes.
Ashley Ruggiero
Exactly what you want a classic New York deli to be. Food is always great and delivery is quick!
Charlie
Bensonhurst is the mecca for Italian heroes and Original John’s is a great option. I really like how customizable their heroes are - choose your own bread size, toppings and dressings. I got the Hank Moody on the 12” hero topped with the broccoli rabe spinach mix, fresh basil and pesto sauce. Even though it was prob enough to share I couldn’t stop eating and finished it feeling like a stuffed ravioli afterwards.
Ariel Maguire
You're not going to get a better sandwhich in the gravesend/bensonhurst area. They have a sandwhich for everyone from buffalo shrimp, roast beef, pastrami, turkey whatever you want they have it. My personal favorite is the ari gold on pretzel bread, and I also really like their hot Turkey and roast beef sandwiches because the gravy is awesome. The portions are old school where a roll will really fill you and a hero has yet to fill even the most bottomless of stomachs. Dont let the prices spook you, they are exactly where the should be for the quality. I think the subway next door was crazy for opening up next to them, and I think they only manage to stay open because of people not knowing the hidden gem next door (Johns Deli is competitive price wise).
johnny chin
Best roast beef sandwich you can get. Throw on a sesame hero add the spinach and onions and it'll take it to another level.
M Alghazalizoom
Used to frequently visit this place since it was close to my school. I gotta say they are very consistent with their work. Something never changed here I’m 4 years later and everything just fall in the right place. Great food, great service
Jay
The veal parm was $28 and ok…I expect Katz for that price so it wasn’t there. However, some of these other postings look great. Maybe I got the wrong thing.
Alyssa D.
Had the roast beef dip. It put me in a coma it was so good. Can’t wait to recover so I can come back again. YUM!
Dorothy Reviss
Fiona sandwich was bomb, the fried mozzarella sandwich is also a must have. great food overall
Colleen Zayas
A great neighborhood staple! The Johnnie's Hot Roast Beef is a given to try and the gravy extra delicious and not skimping on it all! Fully loaded! Now go get yours! I also have othe items on Tommy Holiday...lemon pepper potatoe wedges delicious, I wind up scraping the bottom to get the extra sauce 😉 …
Ely
The service was great but I felt the roast beef sandwich didn't live up to the fame. I saw videos saying how good it was and although it wasn't bad, it wasn't as good as I expected.
Nate Sosa
Travelled all the way from Toronto, Canada to have the world famous Roast Beef sandwhich and it was everything i expected and more. $100 fed 7 adults, very fairly priced considering the amount of food we got. Best Roast Beef sandwhich in North America. They even game me a t shirt!
Danielle Tarulli
I called to ensure there was no bbq sauce and Worcestershire sauce in the roast beef gravy because a client of mine had a reaction to it last time I ordered. Girl on the phone said ok, did not inquire about anything and when I got there and asked got a very vague answer from the other workers. Me and my family have loved this place for years but customer service quality is definitely diminishing taking from the experience and food. As a person who has been in the service industry years it is very disappointing getting mediocre service from a staple in the community.
J
Sandwiches are fantastic. You wont be disappointed at John's Deli. It's a small place so order ahead and take-out is definitely recommended. Check out their menu online. Hot and cold sandwiches, soups and plates. Food is fresh and tastes great.
Michael Fontanez
They were famous for their roast beef but now days it tastes like deli meat. The onions aren't sweet and the gravy tastes different also. New owners aren't keeping up with the older traditions. And they raised the prices
Cliff Padilla
The Dexter Morgan sandwich is one of the best sandwiches I've ever had.
Kevin Dont matter
Over rated and nasty people 16 bucks for a dry and tasteless roast beef hero.. and that what they are known for .. way over rated
Rex Rhee
Solid sandwiches, roast beef w/ gravy 💥 …
Joseph Manolo
Great place, amazing food, kind of pricey like $14.00 a hero but it’s awesome!!
stefano campoli
Excellent food, excellent quality, excellent price, and the owner is a gentleman. Runs a clean, worthwhile business.. For a great eat, especially the roast beef with black gravy, my favorite... Go here.... Support this excellent deli... Worth the drive if you live further.. ..its a easy 5 star.....Thank you to John's for the excellent meal.. Greatly Appreciated..
Dylan Negri
They mess up my order a lot but I’m a fan of John’s deli, lol
Rob Chiang
Amazing legendary place for food. Come on by and grab some food! Your stomach will thank you....
DIMITRI LASKAS
Found a new deli if I'm in this neck of the woods... John's Deli...say hello to Keyser Soze....Pastrami, melted swiss, sliced pickles, coleslaw, spicy brown mustard on pretzel bread... this was insane...pastrami was nice and hot, great crunch from pickles & coleslaw to add texture to every bite...pretzel bread completes the deal with killer sandwich....
Very full....is it nap time yet? Lol

OOOHHH.. BROOKLYN’S FINEST.. YOU WANNA FRESH ONE 👋 …
max Bergen
Been a Brooklyn staple for 50+ years, always good and the gravy is amazing, I only get the roast beef with extra gravy, but I am sure all the sandwiches are 💣 …
Evie Barreras
Love Thier huge variety of sandwiches 🥪
S W
One of the best deli sandwiches in Brooklyn. I’d prefer the sandwiches here over De Fontes any day of the week. Stop by and you’ll see.
Dave Tejada
Always try tro make thim my first stop in NY. One of my all time favorite sammiches. Gotta go..don't forget to tip!
nicholas pannulla
If your in the mood for a great roast beef sandwich this is one of the best. The gravy takes the sandwich to a whole new level. Must try!
Eddie Y
Always go for the Mike Lowry, great food and always fresh...... Staff could be a little more friendly 🤔.......... …
FRANK
Had the Chiken rollatini, Eggplant Parm..and broccolirape..everything was superb. I went there for the baked chicken & potato..unfortunately they no longer have it on the menu...☹...good news 🙂 after a pleasant conversation with John one of the owners..he said they may be putting back he's had quite a few requests for it..
It's his mom's recipe...TY 😉👍
Kevin Reuter
The "Johnny Roast Beef" is still one of the best sandwiches you can find in NYC, or the world for that matter.
If this place were in a trendy neighborhood, there would always be a line out the door. Well worth the trek if you consider yourself a connoisseur of sandwiches.
The roast beef is roasted in house and the gravy is to-die-for (literally, thick stuff!) Other sandwiches are also amazing but the roast beef is iconic for a reason.
Tip: get the sandwich with a side of gravy to dip in.
Don't wear white while eating it, as it's messy.. but oh so glorious!
Shiki Li
This is an amazing place that's been in this neighborhood. Always came here for a quick bite after school. It's not that fast to get your food because they make the food nicely. So if you want good food, you gotta wait!!
I usually get Tommy Devito with marinara sauce, and some potato croquettes. Delicious
Brenda K
Absolutely delicious!
Not everyone knows how to make simple sandwiches. First off you just have high quality ingredients. The bread was perfect. Exactly what good Italian bread should be.
Lightly crispy when you bite into it and immediately giving way to a nice chewy and flavorful dough. Seeded with tons of seeds. I had a tuna sandwich. I know what you are thinking .. BFD.. but honestly I haven’t had a tuna sandwich for about 800 years that hasn’t been flavorless and runny. The balance between tuna Mayo and delicious fresh red onion was perfect. The lettuce and tomato were fresh. The tomato tasted like a tomato! The tuna sandwiches of my last were flavorless mush inside of soggy bread. Cole Slaw was also delicious with the right amount of subtle sweetness. I’ll be ordering again. Thank you so much !
Lori Armour
My friends and I wanted to send a platter of sandwiches to our friend who’s father passed away. It was a last minute order on a holiday weekend, but John’s Deli really came through and went above and beyond to help out. They made up a really nice platter and got it there right away! I really appreciated it. Thank you so much!
Richard OO
I have tried their turkey and chicken sandwiches (Grilled and cutlets) and their so amazing! I have been ordering from this place for a long time now and the sandwiches never disappoint. Always tasty, fresh, and built to perfection 👍 …
Zehra Jaffery-Muyir
My first time at this restaurant and it was absolutely delicious. I got the Monday special (pastrami sandwich) but my way with the white hero bread with mayo and pickles, mozzarella cheese and it already comes with mustard. I got some gravy on the side. The cleanliness was just great. The place was spotless. The attitude and customer service was great. I spoke with who I believe is the owner; he was so nice and respectful. I’m definitely going back for more and I have to try their other sandwich’s! Must try!
Slava B
This place is good. Had their Godfather sandwich and moz sticks it was delicious. Totally not pretentious place, what NY deli should be. If I ever come back to Brooklyn will return for sure
John Tawee
Had the Johnny Boy sandwich, which is basically a hot roast beef sandwich, with melted mozzarella cheese, sautéed onions and gravy. It was delicious. The sandwich was a little pricey, at $14.95, but it was huge and tasty. I couldn't eat this way every day, but once in a while, it's a nice treat. Not much room inside to sit and eat, but they do have a few tables, and a few outdoor tables in front. If I'm ever in the neighborhood, I'd definitely come back.
Daniel G.
Amazing selection of delicious sandwiches and other dishes! Customer service is always great.
George Johnson
Food is delicious. Every morsel tastes like Brooklyn
Matt China
The Roast Beef Hero with Mozzarella, brown Gravy & Onions cant be beat. The Kaiser Sose pastrami hero also excellent. This is a pretty pricey hero shop. Average hero price is 15 each. So if you feel you deserve a treat/cheat day and have the money to do it, go here for sure.
yu new
Good for a quick bite. The staff is friendly and the place is clean. I also really liked how at every single table they had a roll of paper towels because the sandwiches can get messy. I found it very helpful when I was eating my food! Definitely try the roast beef, especially because they are famous for it. You will not be disappointed!! It's not the best sandwich I've ever had but it was still good and the gravy was excellent. My boyfriend got a specialty sandwich that he really enjoyed. It was a calamari and shrimp parm on a hero. It was different, and he really loved it! I tried it as well and thought it was really good. Also you must have their potato croquettes. I LOVED them. So delicious. Probably one of the best I've ever had!! Can't wait to go back for more potato croquettes.
Tom Asimakopoulos
Best sandwich spot in Brooklyn!!! Known and adored for their delicious Roast Beef sandwiches, they have so much more to offer!!! Just had their Keyser Soze (Pastrami Melted Swiss Cole Slaw and Pickles on a Pretzel Hero) All I have to say is WOW. One of my favorite sides is the Buffalo cauliflower. Every time I go there I arrive starving and leave satisfied. Highly recommend!!!
Jade Kwong
Even if you’re stuffed from the sandwich, get the fried ravioli - you won’t regret it!
Phillip Garner
Not the same John's it used to be, but still the best sandwich and sides you're going to get in that area.
Maya Hure
Best sandwiches I ever ate in my life. Bread is so fresh, crispy and delicious.. every bite gets better and better!
Matty C Collings
Always great sandwiches and heroes. I really love how they allow you to customize every single desire for your sandwich. The sandwich names they added a handful of years ago are also always a laugh to read when I order . Fresh ingredients, value for the price and I am really glad they are still around and still so consistently great. Thanks!
Thomas Pellegrini
The roast beef with gravy, fresh mozzarella and onions alone gets john's deli 5 stars
Loren Avellino
Not as good as it used to be. Hot sandwiches underseasoned. Still giant though.
Michael Conklin
When I get out this way, that's the only place I go to eat, been doing this for many years. The Sandwiches are delicious and they give you plenty of what ever you order. Also, the customer service is impeccable. I would highly recommend trying.
Helene Hager
I had the Beef Barley soup & Roast Berf on a roll w/broccoli rabe, spinach & garlic. Both were delicious. This was my first time ordering from John's Deli. Will definitely order from them again.
chris caracciolo
Another great classic sandwich spot.
Those who know..know. the others are missing out ... food is real tasty here ..
I'm a huge fan of the johnny ....
Roast beef ,fresh mozz, caramelized onions ,brown gravy. I take my in a roll.
Great sammy
Stop by.. get a real taste of Brooklyn.
Nice People Serving Nice Food
Zedi Master
Great place for hero sandwiches. Keeping this real, They have a large selection from cold to hot hero sandwiches. They serve them in various sizes, from a roll, to 9 inches, to 16 inches. A bit pricey for daily meals for me, but okay for once in a while self treat. My 9 inch hero sandwich cost $11 (which did not even include any drinks yet), a bit pricey for deli food for me, considering the subway sandwich shop is almost right next door. Make no mistake, daily consumption of these sandwiches will make you obese.
Vlada Ganz
Have ordered from John’s on multiple occasions and it is consistently finger licking good! Awesome place that really hits the craving!
mike soke
The teller was very nice, but the store has new owners and the quality of the classic roast beef with mozzarella and the classic motor oil gravy has taken a turn for the worst. All these amazing Brooklyn institutions that I grew up with are all going downhill, I remember coming here when you were in line with people from the five families, and they kept this place in line I'm assuming, much like they did a lot of other things.
Tu's Dental
Absolutely amazing food, we ordered johnnys roast beef sandwich and Vinny chase it was so delicious, they deserve more than 5 stars. The owner john is such a humble and sweet guy, we wish them all the best and they are amazing , BEST BEST IN THE AREA. Delivery was so quick and their coworkers are so nice. Thank you guys for such an amazing and tasty food.
Tony G
Subway...John's roast beef with gravy, onions and muts is a Brooklyn classic.
Been coming here for years and it never changes, which is the best part of their recipe.
If you come by during lunch, expect to wait, but they do run the counter service quickly, tables are few and most of the guys having lunch are done quickly. So tables are opened faster than they look.
Compare this roast beef to the others in Brooklyn and I consider it to be the working mans sandwich, large, filling, heavy (in a good way) still affordable and absolutely delicious!
Worth traveling to, parking sucks, so be prepared to keep an eye out for DOT.
BiG O
An old time favorite that never lets you down. Been coming here since I was a little kid. Roast beef with gravy and onions is the best on this planet!
Pat Travolino
THE J0HNNY ORIGINAL ROAST BEEF WITH FRESH MOZZERELLA, ONIONS AND THIER OWN GRAVY IS A INCREDIBLE BLEND OF TASTES THAT COME TOGETHER LIKE A SYMPHONY.
YOU CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF IT.
SIMPLE YET LUXURIOUS. IT SIMPLY BECOMES A CRAVING.
David Rodriguez
Brooklyn's best deli. Fish fridays is a must. And as always the best Roast Beef.
Charles Tang
Their food is always on point. The roast beef hero with extra gravy on the side. I was disappointed that I drove a couple of miles on my limited break to go eat there on a Tuesday night when there was no line and had to wait about 20 mins for my sandwich. I could understand if it was busy.
Olga Lok
;; just about the absolute best sandwich shop ever!!!
Frankie fo0ter
Used to put more meat in the roast beef sandwich, seems like it got smaller dramatically compared to the old days of John's deli.
Theresa
Personally, I don't feel that this place is as good as it was years ago! The prices are a bit high, and the sandwiches are like you could get at any deli. The homemade roast beef is good, and I do like their greek spinach pie, but, as I said, it's not "WOW!!" Also, I walk in and I'm not even acknowledged by either of the 2 people behind the counter, until I said, "excuse me" !!! I was ready to walk out!! But, I was hungry and it was late and they were open🤔 (extra: during the cold weather months, with the added outdoor seating cover, the entrance looks like it may be difficult for wheelchair accessibility, don't know for sure, but something I noticed).
Lana Svetlana
Delicious heros! Lots of different options, I think they are known for their roast beef which is addicting. The bread is always fresh and delicious. I would have given them 5 stars but the buffalo shrimp hero I had on my last visit was horrible, expensive, not that many shrimp and the blue cheese was off. I'll be going back to try other varieties though.
Dom Jr
In a word amazing! !! If you haven't experienced a roast beef sandwich with caramelized onions & gravy on a toasted hero, you're life has yet to begin. I've yet to eat something here I didn't enjoy. If you don't know what subway means your not from the neighborhood, but we wont hold that against you . Come early avoid the lines .
David Pball
AWESOME roast beef sandwich. You have to try the Johnnie roastbeef sandwich (submarine style...not on the roll) The dark, thick gravy on the sandwich with caramelized onions is absolutely wonderful. We also tried the breakfast here too. The home fries were A+ We must visit here again the next time we are in Brooklyn!!!
Jason Newman
Best sandwiches in town. Unique selections, healthy portion sizes and amazing flavors. Everything they do, they do it the best. Roast beef and gravy is a must, here! This place is an institution.
Ivan T
I just ate the best sandwich in my life !!! Chicken cutlet on a hero with fresh mozzarella, avacado, roasted red peppers, ground pepper, fresh basil, mayo, and olive oil. The sandwich was made to perfection and definitely will be ordering again!! Expected delivery was on time which is great !! Thank you 🌀🌀🌀 …
Lee Hamacher
DUDE. This place is awesome. A real classic old school Brooklyn spot. The bread is perfect, limitless options of sandwiches with names like "the Dexter Morgan" and "the Tony Soprano". If you're reading this and trying to decide, go to John's.
Joyce Coco
Placed order before I came to pick it up. Left out the roast beef gravy that I asked for on the side as we had to travel about 20 mins to get home. The gravy makes this sandwich! We've read about it for years but this was the first time we went to John's and my husband was looking forward to trying this sandwich. What a disappointment when we unpacked and didn't have any gravy. The sandwich was ok he said but nothing like it should have been, dripping with gravy.
DeAndre Key
One of the best Deli's I've ever been too!! I highly recommend the Roast Beef sandwich with everything it comes with and preferably extra sauce on the side! If I lived closer I'd go everyday
Erik Cross
The best roast beef hero you've ever had in your life guaranteed.
You will think that angels descended from heaven and delivered this amazing sandwich.
The toasted Italian bread is crusty and fresh.
The roast beef is thin sliced and tender.
The fresh mozzarella is melted on top.
The gravy is black and looks like used motor oil that will stain your fingers, but damn it's delicious.
Trust me, this is a hero you will savor to the last bite.
Drop what you're doing, go to John's right now and order this hero.
You'll thank me later...
A+++
p.s. Don't forget to drop a couple of dollars in the tip jar to hear the boys yell "Subway"
Wesley M
The infamous roast beef sandwich is good but I've been told that it was bought by New people. Will say I last went there on 03/30/17, They were cheap with the amount of roast beef on the hero. It was the amount for maybe a roll. For the price of $12, I'll pass. They do have other Italian specialties there that I haven't tried though

A neighborhood place.the new owner actually improved on the menu.and added a few modern touches.good food, worth the money.
Kenny Bates
I love it for their famous roast beef sandwich. Omg it's just the right amount for you to enjoy the whole hero. They don't over stuff it. Oh yeah the gravy they use is just amazing.
Lol one thing ,expect to pay a lot for this hero but it sooo worth it. Put it this way with the $2.00 tip, a 20 oz coke, and the hero, I paid a whopping $16!!! It sounds crazy but sometimes you really have to treat yourself and this is so worth it!!!!!!!! Its an amazing sandwich!!!!!!
Ps I forgot to mention that the staff makes you feel welcome and they are really very nice!!!!
Don Stugots
This place makes the best roast beef hero ever. Order it with the works and you will want to name your first born after me. Follow up it with a rice ball. These guys do not mess around. They follow their grandmother's recipes. The service is rough and do not ask what "subway" means.
Mad Maxx
The food is ok, however it's gotten salty over the years. Not like it once was. Not a bad place to eat, however much more overpriced than I remember. Like everything else, it has changed here. Just wish it were for the better. Cashier needs an attitude adjustment as well. Poor skills in communication, and for God's sake, would it kill you to smile and PRETEND like you actually care about my order? I just wanna place my order and get service with a smile, I'm not looking to marry you for Christ's sake!
MidnightLadyCrow
Went in one day an hour before closing and wasnt greeted by any staff at all. Sandwich chicken parmigiana was ok, chicken was thin and almost non existent for the price, but the mozzarella cheese is good though. Roast beef sandwich on the other hand is good (my gf got it for me earlier that day) and packed with meat. I could do without the excessive amount of onions but then again it was my first time and I didn't know what was in store for me. Gravy was not flavorful at all imo, I actually had to put marinara sauce in mine to keep it juicy. So all in all for ME at least, this place is mediocre.
Charley “Harley Hathaway” Yepez
Let's just say, my co- worker brought me to this place 2 weeks ago...... I've been ordering from them every day since nonstop, sometimes twice a day, that roast beef on a hero with gravy on the side is to die for, it's all I look forward to it at the end of my work day.
Once again its been weeks, and im still ordering from this place Non-stop, seriously its just that AMAZING, im now getting the sauteed stringbeans with my Roastbeef hero i dip everything into that Gravy. Great food, great worker's, great and prompt service. U wont regret ordering from this place!
Chad Perry
Finally was around in the neighborhood an was able to stop in. Was well worth it. I had the Tony Montana and it was delicious. Huge selection of sandwiches along with hot food. It's a must have if your around the neighborhood
mark andujar
Good place for veal, chicken, shrimp and eggplant parm. The sauce is has good flavor. The roast beef is good too.
Anthony Ortiz
Best motor oil gravy ever made
Jacob Ben
Roast beef supreme here is hands down the most delicious sandwich in the world. The roast beef is fresh and steaming with pleasant vapors of succulent and soft beef. Placed on a perfectly crisp Italian hoagie bun, the flavors combine with cheese and caramelized onions to create a firework explosion in your mouth. Not only is this sandwich delicious, its a Brooklyn sized sandwich! Not the Manhattan fufu. The sandwich is huge! Packed with meat and more meat! Not like the 2 pieces of disgusting processed bread with 1 calculated piece of meat and cheese and packed with filler lettuce, that you get at Subway!
Eat here! The place is great! (new owners but they seem to be keeping the same recipe!)

These guys are nuts, seriously. Food aside, you go in here and its basically a bunch of "bros" hanging out. I got the roast beef to eat the next day at work, so I got my gravy on the side in the form of two containers. On the way home one of the containers literally exploded, but luckily I was able to contain the damage. Let me tell you, John's gravy is one of a kind. I don't know whats in it, I don't want to know, but it is delicious. I also like that its more of a gravy, where as at other places that have great roast beef the gravy is more of an au jus. The next day, I heated the thing up and dug in. The mozzarella was good quality, the roast beef was a bit fatty but was otherwise flavorful (they skimped on it a bit though), the onions were well done, the bread was pretty good, and of course the gravy was delicious. It was a solid sandwich; I think it would've been much better if it was fresh though. I will have to go back to try again (with some rice balls) sometime.
Traci
Fellow Brooklyn natives have raved for years about the roast beef and mozzarella sandwich from John's and I only first had it in 2015. So worth the hype for so many reasons: the bread is fresh and crispy, the roast beef is like butter and perfectly sliced, the mozzarella is insane, the onions are so soft and are perfect toppers and finally, the gravy is out of this world. The rice pudding is also phenomenal, don't bother adding cinnamon as its perfect as it is. Prices are fair and service is friendly so with the sandwich, this place is perfect
Jason Petrino
I just got an eggplant hero delivered & I didn't even finish the other half yet, but I had to say how delicious this is. If I ever had a better eggplant hero, I can't remember when. I usually only eat half but not today. Great job!
WILL SOTO
My wife go to this place she is a roast beef sandwich type of gal. It's been around forever, i love their chicken parm hero sandwich and they have a great selection. Sorry SUBWAY you can not compare with their good cook and prepare sandwiches and meal. Love it
Ron 537
I've been eating the roast beef sandwiches from here for over 20 years. No place in the city makes a sandwich as good as theirs. Hope this place doesn't close and a chain store pops up like everywhere else in the city.
Anthony Orientale
I had the Marcellus Wallace, and it was by far the best sandwich I’ve ever had. It was so good I didn’t even have time to take a picture of the masterpiece I ate. I highly recommend.
Danny Deluna
Pretty good sandwiches, really busy deli, I would recommend trying the sloan sandwich.
Roman Grinblat
Always a good too spot when in the area
Catherine Salazar
The food was pretty good. It is a bit too pricey though. But, the staff is really sweet and the environment is great. I definitely would recommend to try this place out.
B G
If you want a sloppy roast beef sandwich its worth a try.
-No place to park your car "The cops love this corner deli because many people park outside to get a sandwich when you come back you will have a $135.00 ticket . "Happened to me"
-The is dark and it doesn't look that clean. The rating has range from B - A on a few months.
-The guy in the front has an attitude like in the movie GODFATHER or he must think he is a Soprano.
Ian Ellison
You can't go wrong with anything you order here!
loots loots
Still a great sandwich. Since the brooklyn location sold the price has gone higher and higher. $14 for a sandwich is a lot of money. The Staten island location has original owner and better prices
Teresa Simmons
I was in the area and checked my bookmarks in yelp for something to eat and decided to check out this deli. When I arrived around noon it was pretty crowded. There were a lot of MTA staff sitting and feasting. Customers who were there appeared to be regulars since the staff were making small talk with a lot of them which was cool.
There's a nice sized menu to choose from all these funky and creative sandwiches and I didn't know which one to choose. I finally decided on the pastrami and cheese on the pretzel bread which was scrumptious. oooh a very tasty combination. I also ventured out to try something new and tried the rice ball with ham and cheese with parmesan on top. That was just okay to me. Shout out to Ellie the cashier who explained the rice ball and the options I could get with it. Even though there was a line behind me, he was patient and answered my questions without rushing me. :-)
Be prepared to wait a few for your food because with the customers in the store and the phone orders it was very busy. Every few minutes the staff would yell "Subway" which meant they received a tip. The next time I visit, I'll try the truffles and another cool sandwich. I will definitely keep this place bookmarked.
Morgan “Mig” P
Fantastic sandwiches! Their roast beef is what they're known for, but that doesn't mean that's the only one they do well. I've tried over 10 different ones, and have been completely satisfied.
Nisarg AOP
I love John's Deli...just had a the chicken marsala, and it's hands down the BEST! Other favorites are the Tommy Devito, the Nucky Thompson, and the Roasted chicken w/ potatoes. Very friendly desk & kitchen staff, prompt on pick ups & deliveries, and perfectly portioned meals...love 'em!! Try it out today, and I guarantee it'll be your new favorite sammich spot!! THANK YOU SUBWAY !!
Stephanie Hernandez
Amazing, I am always happy with their food. Also, orders are always right 10/10. Which says a lot about them as a business. My favorite their buffalo chicken or shrimp.
Nora
Im a big fan of Johns. The sandwhiches are worth their pricing. Hope they stay in similar price point because this is a crucial point in why they are patronized so well. I should know, Im a community consumer affairs director.
These sanwhiches are made with care and class and I always choose them over any other. They have been responsive to issues in the past. For example they used to hate grubhub and even put a slip on their bags to ask us not to order thru them. This was seen as highly inappropriate to folks as it came off disrespectful and petty especially because noone forced them into the free advertisement on grubhub. They stopped this.
Also their reps would always get orders wrong over the phone, especially toppings and they wondered why we wanted it on grubhub where it was recorded and typed by us. However now they have an intelligent and patient woman answering the phone she does a much better job than the guys here did! Never wrong!
Only thing they need to watch out for now is consistency. Sometimes sandwhiches are filled sometimes all you taste is bread. I cant afford that when Im bringing my clients food from Johns and bragging about them only to find it wasnt what I said. Once or twice is once or twice too many.
Also the jip with the cheese lost them a customer last January. A neighborhood local. Come on youre not losing money on the cheese guys just put an amount of cheese in that doesnt make people want to give it back to you and make their own sandwhich. Extra cheese should not be 3 or 4 slices for an extra 1.50 on top of the 1.50 for cheese in the first place. Thats a third or quarter of the total price. Depending. Big Turn off.
Other than that this place makes Lionis look worthless! The food here you can trust and you can honor. It is a gem. Thank guys!
Oh and ps. Tried the godfather hero recently And Ive never tasted such a carefully crafted beautiful piece of art. Keep it up!
Russell Martilla
Awesome food. Been going for years...
amanda
It's cool because there is a whole story when they yell SUBWAY. Back in the day a train ride to get them home was a quarter... When they would sell sandwiches and get change from the customer, they would yell SUBWAY when they got a quarter. They still do that now! Good sandwiches very clean and the entertainment us usually movies or news about business and politics. My favorite sandwich is the Rocky Balboa... 😍
ka do
Great original variety of sandwiches and heros. Fresh bread, sides of sauteed veggies. Eat in or take out. My Cousin Vinny on TV added to ambience....A real Brooklyn find, go there!
Austin
Great sandwich. I got the whole wheat roll, next time just go for the Italian hero.
Lisa Iachello
Just left after ordering the special. Group of about 8 guys order after me. I give a $5 tip on a $15 order and then after the worker bags my order he says oh I didn't charge you for the "Mountain Dew". I said I just gave a 5 buck tip are you kidding me? He said I don't work on tips and I made a mistake. So I told him to take it out of the tip. I felt like a jerk, bad customer service, and I can't even eat my sandwich yet cause I'm so turned off. I gave 4 stars cause the food is great but that guy made me feel small.
Dante Feramisco
Fantastic!! I cannot say enough great things about this famous neighbor hood joint. The best Roast Beef Sandmich on earth. Cheese balls rice balls all kinds a balls up in this spot!! Hurray for Johns deli. The Best Italian Deli in Brooklyn.
C D
I visited John's Deli, after reading about it in the Daily News. I ordered the Roast Beef sandwich with Muzz & Gravy. My boyfriend ordered the Chicken Parm hero and we shared the Fried Ravioli appetizer. Both sandwiches were delicious and my boyfriend and I even traded at one point, because we couldn't just have one bite! The fried ravioli was great and their Marinara sauce is awesome.
With two sandwiches, the app, and two drinks, the total came to $25.
Will definitely visit again!
Rostislav Ryvkin
Great place. Heaving lunch here almost every few weeks (whenever I in a neighborhood). Recommended to all my friends and coworkers. I am not a big fan of roast beef on general but this place makes it so good !!!!! Definitely recommend this place
Douglas H
I was craving comfort food so I ordered a penne vodka. expecting it to be a mush fest being it was delivered. It was AMAZING! Al dente and just actually perfect... Thank you guys for figuring out how to stay awesome!
Tony Kingz
The Tony Soprano is my favorite sandwich it this deli. There is an old school Italian deli feel when u walk in here. There is a big menu painted on the wall that gives a detailed description of what every sandwich comes with and they have specials for every day of the week. The roast beef is the star of the show here and the gravy aka black gold is the co-star. Its basically an ajou cooked down into almost molasses like consistently great for dipping your sandwich.
Shawn
Nice Italian deli. I asked for a bacon egg and cheese on a roll. They asked me how I wanted my eggs and bacon cooked and offered different types of cheese when they could have just done whatever. Nice extra touch that will make me come back
Billy Bob
Man did this place fall off. The roast beef gravy n muzz was still a good sandwhich. Thats why they get the 3 stars. All of the Brooklyn is gone from here, a hero, a small dish of buffalo chicken n a drink... $24.62 who even charges numbers like that. Id rather pay 25. To me, this is not what it used to be, not even close. Change the sign outside, change the name and move on.
kelly ann
I visited this place two or three times. They open late, sandwiches are good. Little pricey but it’s fresh and has a loooot of meat. I will definitely come back.
Greisy Espinosa
The staff is nice, They don't have a bathroom for customers but if you really need to go they will let you pass to the one they have in the back, is not bad but you have to go through the kitchen. The food is good but they have changed a little bit, I understand things get more expensive but don't compromise the quality of your product, charge more but keep the original formula.
B
After hearing good things about John's Deli, I decided to come here with my girlfriend. I ordered the Roast Beef sandwich with Muzz & Gravy. My girlfriend ordered the Chicken Parm hero and we shared the Fried Ravioli appetizer. Both sandwiches were delicious and my girlfriend and I even traded at one point. The fried ravioli was great and their Marinara sauce is very tasty.
Bodega Brad
For me...it's all about the Roast Beef Hero with fresh Mozz and onions...gravy on the side. Sadly, I often dream abt the gravy.. it's just that good! The Orignal deli with very very very good food! A must stop in Brooklyn!
Onika Bright
It is a classic sandwich shoppe. They don't make them like this anymore.
gracie restivo
Love there roast beef hero's,so much meat inside my hero that my dog had lunch also. i didn't have to ride around looking for a spot the parking was easy and a big plus bc the place seemed very clean.
Zenobia Llanos
Great food 😋 👌 I'll be back 😋
Jen Daniel
I LOVE this place. I'm actually from Illinois but I love New York. Anytime I come I try as many deli's as possible and this one by far is EXCELLENT!! I wish I could give 10 stars. From the bread, to the meats and cheeses all the way down to the italian dressing that I ordered on the side of my philly verizon sandwich. The roast beef is also the best I've had. I really need to know, do you guys make that italian dressing in house or is that a brand dressing that is brought in? I need more of it.
Victor Chirco
They have this roast beef with gravy sandwich. It's delicious. I highly recommend it. The staff are very welcoming .
Kevin Witte
The best roast beef sandwich I have had. Meat is pink juicy falls apart in your mouth. Bread is the perfect crunch. Gravy is simply amzing and the onions add the best flavor. An orgasm of the mouth!
Anthony Montalvo
They never disappoint. The food is always amazing, and the staff are always personable. Definitely one of be best staples in NYC and definitely in Brooklyn.
mitch kaley
Havent been there in over 2 years. New owners cleaned up the place . And they computerized it but made service slower. Food still fantastic Roast beef mozzarella thick brown gravy and caramelized onions. Delish
Frank
As soon as I walked inside this establishment , I’ve noticed the great vibe and atmosphere from the people working here...Trying some of their menu items made me fall in love especially being at a very affordable price point. Great neighborhood spot, I highly recommend anyone to come inside and give them a try. Thank you for the years in the neighborhood of great food
Robert Fernandez
The legendary roast beef is good, and worth a trip if you're in the neighborhood. Meatball pram was skimpy, with unseasoned meat. Potato croquettes were out of this world.
Miranda Lopez
You dont live in Brooklyn your whole life and not know about Johns Deli. Completely love this place!! From the Roast Beef sandwich with the awesome gravy to the potatoe croquettes its def a great place for a great lunch.
Tyler Lund
Famous roast beef hoagies that have a reputation for a reason. Huge sandwiches on nice crispy bread with thick beef, cheese, and onions. These sandwiches give cheesesteaks a run for their money. The preparation takes some time, but all is forgiven when you dive into the delicious hoagie.
Cliff Padilla
Another place with great food and customer service. Highly recommended. Make sure that you order any of the parmesan sandwiches. You won't go wrong with them.
linda Harrison
The best pastrami and pretzel bread! All sandwiches are sooooo fresh and delicious 😋. Hat's off to these ladies and gents! Subway! …
Dmitry
I eat here at least once, aweek
Manhattan special coffee soda and a Kayser Soz^e special. Thats hot pastrami, coleslaw, mustard pickles some other stuff on a pretzel roll. It's Fuc*king ridiculously Delishus!! There really nothing else to note that hasn't been written. I basically just get one of the hot sandwiche specials of the day. Old School, Yup. Still Delisuoso, Yup!!!
Joe DeMartino

Great place for pastrami sandwiches been here a long time they have a couple of other places but this is the best one food is fresh and it’s very good service is good too!! The lines do get long there and it’s a small place but it’s definitely worth the wait!!
Josh Pesin
This is the go-to Italian deli when in the Bensonhurst/Bath Beach area. There's a reason why many celebrities have visited this deli as indicated by the many signed headshots covering one of their walls. The combination of fresh hero bread and a large assortment of delicious deli meats and toppings along with a friendly family-owned atmosphere makes for a winning combination. Seeing an Asian customer visit this place tells you something.
Robert Hebron
THANKS SUBWAY. If you’re reading this trying to decide to go here or not close google maps and go now. My wife likes the slick, I go for salami white American lettuce mayo seeded hero.
Get fried ravioli and thank me later.
