Fast food. All stars are exactly for that. I came in to try the Chicago hot dog and they delivered. It was really good and this place totally deserves all the stars. But do not think it is a upscale place. Take the hot dog and the drink and enjoy it in a AC environment on a comfy bench. Look around for the history and just people that you recognize on the pictures. Better pay with cash if you are counting 3% a deal-breaker for a card payment. :)

A go to lunch spot for locals and tourists alike. In fact, there were more locals here than tourists when we visited, which is usually a good sign. We ordered the spicy Beef sandwich and a side of fries with a Dr. Pepper and it hit the spot. If I had to reorder again, I would add peppers and ask for extra juicy!

I’d seen this eatery on the Food Network (recorded 2018) and made sure it was on my list to visit and so pleased I did. I ordered the Italian beef roll with both ends dipped in the gravy, fries and soda. Definitely take the serviettes they offer as it’s a messy affair. There’s plenty of photographs to gawp at covering many years of local TV presenters in the main and side seating areas. Lots of locals visiting too which I take as a good sign.

Being from a smaller town where folks lean a bit heavier on the niceties- I’m grateful that the friend I visited with set my expectations coming in: “Expect great Italian beef and very curt… almost-abrasive service” These places (cash only with high quality food) focus on moving people through the queue as quickly as possible. A warm interaction is not a part of the “value proposition”. Still…. I can’t help but think that a little smile takes no extra time and makes a difference to me.

Very fast, friendly service and delicious food! We chose Mr. Beef as our stop for an Italian Beef in Chicago and we were both happily satisfied. My wife and I each got an Italian Beef dipped in the au jus - mine with sweet peppers and hers with both sweet and hot peppers. Juicy, savory, aromatic and very satisfying. We shared an order of cheese fries and sat down at the long table in their air conditioned dining room and stuffed ourselves. Lots of old photos, many of them signed, and things like a manual cash register (since they prefer cash over a card) add a touch of nostalgia to the place.

This is by far my favorite italian beef in the whole City. The Bear had just shined a spotlight on this iconic Chicago local. As usual, the food was fantastic. I order the beef dipped with giardeneria and the combo sweet. The twice crisped fries was salty and crunchy. The staff is very friendly.

Nice to see that Mr. Beef hasn't let the fame of being featured on a television show go to their heads. Stopped in for lunch and ordered a combo beef/sausage with a side of fries. Service was super quick and my sandwich was served hot and ready. Both beef and sausage were tender and flavorful, complimented nicely by the hot peppers. Washed it all down with a Sierra Mist from the fountain. Perfect meal that hit the spot!

There are quite a few great beef places in Chicago, but none of them are quiet as tasty as Mr. Beef and they've been the most consistent over all the years, as well as totally authentic. And the Mr Beef chains out in the suburbs aren't even comparable to this original location. The staff are all very straightforward people and it's been just about all the same people as long as I can remember. It's usually easy to get parking in their lot, then a seat inside and the food comes fast. Cash only though and the ATM typically doesn't work inside FYI. Definitely worth going out of your way to at least try it once!

The way Italian beef is meant to be done. The peppers and roll are so much better than any imitation restaurant who tries to replicate a real place like Mr. Beef. If you’re a fan of Italian sausage, I would highly recommend the combo as well. Friendly and fast staff to top it all off!

I was sad when my childhood beef stand closed. Mr Beef make me feel much better about it, Classic Chicago. Nice they have a small parking lot in the area they are in, but I never have a hard time looking for parking out front. Service is fast and fries are great for service that fast.

We've been hunting down the best Italian Beef sandwich in Chicago. Customer service was awesome. Prices are very reasonable especially for downtown. They have their own parking lot. The fries are cut on the premises. Fricking delicious! The beef was tender and piled high!

Before my taste buds were tickled with this almighty beef, I was unemployed, lonely and hopeless (All the symptoms of eating at Buona beef) but that all changed March 9th when I decided to tryout this beef stand. After that first juicy bite the fog that haunted my mind dissipated, after the second bite I called McDonald's and demanded for a job... I got it. The third bite was the best of all that bite gave me the GUTS to talk to the fine lady next to me. To make a long story short we married two years after that encounter. Mr.beefs is Bible of beefs thank you.

This is a Chicago institution and possibly the best Italian beef I've ever eaten, and I've had more than my fair share. The fries compliment this as well. It's also very affordable, but is cash only. My only gripe, I wish they had a sink to wash hands. They have wet towelettes, but this sandwich is too juicy for that. This is a must stop every time I'm in Chicago, no question, and I usually take a pound or two of beef back with me when I leave.

Delicious Italian beef sandwich! The staff was super friendly, the service was very fast and the prices were affordable. They don't have toilettes, and the premises might look almost like ramshackle. It doesn't matter, because they know their business and the food is great. The owner was extremely kind and gave us delicious cannoli for free.

We used to have this great Chicago style Italian beef place here in Lincoln, NE run by an old Chicagoan named Norm. Ol Norm's time had come and he passed away a few years back, God rest his soul. My pregnant wife hasn't had an Italian beef sandwich since then and she was craving one. I got the chance to go to Chicago for work for a few days this week and talked to some locals and they said go to Mr. Beef so I stopped in this morning before my 12:30 flight back home and got all the ingredients (and instruction) to make it for her tonight when I got home. This to me is the BEST Beef. I have eating here 1000 plus times. In Chicago, we debate who has the best Italian Beef, but I say Mr. Beef on Orleans. Order the Italian Beef...EXTRA Beef on on sandwich. Add HOT Peppers AND a few Very little sweet peppers (very few sweet peppers with a much higher ratio of hot peppers). Then tell them to make it a little extra WET. You want it dipped once and a bit extra..you don't want it dry and not too wet. That is how to get a great BEEF Mr. BEEF is always Great!! It is where the professional Chicago eaters EAT!!!

I love Italian beef sandwiches and ever since I moved to Texas, it's a ritual to get one every time I visit Chicago. On this Christmas vacation, my dad convinced me to try Mr. Beef instead of Portillos or Al's. Walking in was a blast from the past. Pictures of famous people at Mr. Beef covered the walls. Jay Leno was all over the place. You would think he worked there! Parking can be challenging but at least we didn't have to wait in line. A nice guy with a strong Jersey/New York (sorry, I don't know the difference) accent welcomed us. We ordered Italian beef dipped with hot and sweet peppers and fries. While we waited, we browsed around the pictures in the seating area and had some fun. The food was ready pretty quickly and we sat down to eat it. The Italian beef was one of the best I've had. It was hot, juicy, and packed with LOADS of flavor. The meat was shaved perfectly and surprisingly, it didn't have a bunch of fat pieces. That's a bonus for me. I haven't had celery in an Italian beef sandwich before and I really liked the crunchiness it added. Make sure to get a ton of napkins because it ain't a pretty thing. Juice will get everywhere. It's incredible. I couldn't tell if there was a bathroom, so I just cleaned up as best I could with napkins. You will definitely need to wash your hands though because they will smell like Italian beef. Overall, a 5 star Italian beef sandwich. The fries were also really freaking good and I am so picky with fries. They have to be served hot, crunchy on the outside, soft in the inside, and nicely salted. Mr. Beef did it right! I wish I knew the name of the guy who was working because he was so welcoming and made us feel very comfortable. Maybe the few bad reviews explain why this location was near empty, but all I can say is that we had a really good experience when we went for dinner. I need another trip to Chicago just for this.

Mr. Beef is not only one of my favorite Chicago restaurants, it’s one of my favorite places to eat in the world! And I eat a lot. Promise. Usually I get the Italian beef sandwich, “hot n wet”, local slang for spicy and dipped in jus. The giardiniera w slices of celery is great. The spot is open late on weekends I think, and this is a must have when visiting this great city. I’ve tried three other establishments in Chicago, and one out of state, and Mr. Beef on Orleans is still my go to by far. Will miss it when I return back home to Cali! One cool thing was on a Sat night the owner was letting a homeless guy take a breather inside. It was freezing w ice and snow on the ground outside. I think a lot of people can die in weather like that. Great to see humans being bros!

There is a reason this is a Chicago institution. It's great all the time. It's not fancy, it just does beef right. The combination with hot peppers is the best anywhere. The BBQ sandwich on a hamburger bun is a special treat when they have it. There is a back room with one large very long community table to eat at.

I've lived in Chicago for much of my life, and I've worked my way through the various beef stands as my stomach allows. Mr. Beef's is, in my opinion, the only 5-star beef or combo sandwich. This is no frozen and thawed product. It tastes cooked on site, sliced, and seasoned with artistic care. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what it tastes like. Their "sweet and hot" pepper mix is unique, which scared me at first, but is just plain awesome. The bun holds up to a full load without becoming mush (unlike Al's). The amount of beef is enough for a hearty appetite, and the Italian sausage part of the combo is also fresh tasting and high end. The price is less than Al's or Portillo's; however, the lack of an on-site bathroom is a distraction. Don't be concerned with the gruff employees; they know you'll love it, and they focus on the product. I can talk about other menu items, but that would defeat the purpose: this is simply the best beef sandwich that Chicago has to offer (until I'm proven wrong!).

I was in Chicago with some friends and I wanted to have the best Chicago Steak Sandwich so we went to this place because of his reputation. It sucks. The sandwich was ok but the place is terrible. Not even a bathroom to was your hands: just a bucket with water! I would not recommend it.

So was carving some Italian beef and walked by this unassuming establishment hoping to get a decent sandwich. My hopes were underated. One of the best beef sandwiches I've had in Chicago and the service was on point. First the beef sandwich was drenched in juice, huge portions of meat, and quality outstanding. The workers were friendly, informative, and fast. Next time your over in river north you must stop by give this place a try. Oh and definitely get a chocolate macadamia nut shake. Props guys.

We are beef aficionados. My first time having Mr. Beef today as i was in the neighborhood doing business. My usual beef spot is in Elmwood Park which we frequent weekly. Yes...you know the one. But always wanted to try Mr. Beef. Got 6 beefs dipped with hot peppers. A bit more pricey than others but still reasonable to me. Fast service..lots of thank yous..to the beefs..DELicious. Milder than I expected but flavorful tender meat. Will definitely get it again. Quiet and easy in and out on a Tues afternoon.

Beef by the pound Beef by the pound... One of the best Italian Beef spots in the city. If you looking for a good Italian beef that simple, this is the spot. Run in and grab you one and fries and you are set to go. Beef is always juicy, sweet or hot peppers and the bread is delicious. And if you really like it, you can order their Italian beef by the pound to take home with you. I've done it before and they give you well enough beef and juice to almost recreate it at home.

While driving by, after dropping my daughter off at Union Station, on a Friday, I saw a sign in the window for pepper and egg sandwich $4.00. Because it was Lent, I decided to stop in and order one. The sandwich was "killer". Peppers mixed with carefully scrambled eggs on a French roll slightly dipped in beef juice. Delicious! After eating it, I had to order the Italian beef because I heard they are one of the best in the city. I ordered it with sweet peppers and giardinaire on the side. I asked the counter man to wrap it with extra paper because I would not eat this until the next day. Next day, put it in microwave and nuked it for 1 minute. Even with it being a day old, it was the best beef I ever had, and I've had them all. From Johnnie's in Elmwood Park, Mr. Beef on Harlem, Bobo's on Irving Park, Luke's on Harlem, Jays in Harwood Heights and many others. my previous favorite was Mr. Beef on Harlem which is another great sandwich,

If you like Italian beef, this place is worth a visit. Not the best beef in the greater Chicago area, but pretty tasty and man does the place have a lot of character. Good fries and cannoli too. I was even given the cannoli on the house after making two orders (beef, then sausage), a nice touch.

Great tender beef and it's homemade giardiniera peppers! The portion of the beef is phenomenal, just crazy generous, I was full by the 5th bite but of course as long as there are peppers left I will not stop eating it because the peppers with the diced celery is YUMMY, giardiniera peppers at it's best, nowhere else can I get this unless I make it myself- it's that good!

I have been going to this Mr. Beef's since the mid-80's and I think that their Italian Beef and sausage combo sandwiches are the best anywhere. I always get them with hot peppers and have it dipped in the juice. They are messy but SOOO good. I am hungry just thinking about them.

So my buddy had me come here as he raved about it. To me it was just OK. Definitely a hole in the wall place. I hated how the guys did not use gloves to make the food. Seemed pretty unsanitary. My wife and I went the other day, and I'm not sure I'll ever go back. The Italian Beef isn't bad, there are just other places that are better. My biggest complaint is the giardiniera. It's not very spicy and it mostly celery, which in some bites was the dominant flavor. Subway has better giardiniera for crying out loud.
