Reviews of Russell Peterson Wildlife Refuge
Daminick1980
This place was amazing. Well set up and a great space away from the hustle of the city. The boardwalks were well maintained. Clean restrooms available. Lots of people out for walks, runs, and bike rides. The sounds of the birds was very soothing! Area felt very safe!
Joan Brewer
Beautiful place to walk even now in November! Very nice touches like bicycle racks and a bicycle station that had tools for fixing a bike and air pumps for the tires. The Visitor Center is a lovely place to stop and the restrooms are open at least at this point in time.
Venkata Kishore Bondada
Worth visiting if you like to a long walks. The wildlife refuge starts at the end of River walk. Very scenic place especially during evening you can find very beautiful sunset. I have uploaded few evening sky shots and sun set shots. You can either walk or take a ride on bike on the bridge. This ride will go till the start of River walk. For restrooms you will have to use the ones in restaurants beside the board walk. For this you need to ride for 5 mins towards River walk starting point.
Carolyn Krentz
Great place for wildlife sightings! We saw many birds, a rabbit, a young deer, 2 groundhogs, and a osprey nest. The gentleman inside the center was very friendly and set up the scope so we could get a close up view of the osprey nest and young deer.
Steven J
I lived in DE all my life and always wanted to explore this area. I moved to FL 10yrs ago and came back for a visit and had to go exploring. It was great. I was glad to see Delaware reinvesting back n2 the environment. Especially since I saw 2 Bald eagles. 1 in Middletown and 1 in Christiana/Stanton area. Follow me

Love this place! Most is accessible. If you look close there is a snake in the grass by my grandsons feet!
Marilyn Barratt
Such a beautiful, peaceful place! Wildflowers galore and nice, easy footpaths😃 …
Maria Shackelford
Beautiful location. They have lots of tours and outings, canoe trips. Kayaking etc.
Lynda Saylor
Nice place to walk. Beautiful views
Joyce Greene
Such a beautiful scenic area. Wild flowers , birds can be seen here. Nice walking trails. Great place to take photos.
Jason Klimek
Though there wasn't much wildlife out today but the nature center was open. You can find some animals in there, dead or alive. The nature trails by the river are very cool and the giant tree sculpture/play area is very cool. The views from the top of the ramps are breathtaking and the long walkways that lead into the refugee are amazingly built structures. Lots of walking/running room there. Enjoy!
Barb Hauck-Mah (barbhmphilly)
Spend some time exploring this refuge at 3 levels: by the waterfront, from the elevated walkway, and everywhere in-between. We discovered a Hogwarts- like tree playground, a trickling rock waterfall, and stone-hive sculptures to explore. This refuge is free, dog-friendly, and open daily. It is less than a mile from the Riverwalk mid-point, and leads into the DuPont Environmental Center.
Kinnam
A small getaway area less than a mile from the Wilmington riverfront. Very peaceful during the Christmas holiday.
Evan
Great place for kids and adults. Lots of educational plaquards and wildlife is abundant.
Kat C
Make sure to go past the blockage in the middle when you need to turn to get here. That confused us since the sign is on the other side & the other road goes into a construction area. Nice area to walk around & hop on the other trail that goes to battery Park.
Shakti Prakash Mohanty
What's good : A pleasant surprise for bird watchers & nature lovers. It's not a sanctuary but for a place that close within reach of Wilmington downtown with so much diverse flora and fauna, it's a treat. At 5 mins distance from office in downtown, a walk here will unwind your stressful day.
Cris Daniels
The refuge and the Jack Markell Trail are truly gems of northern New Castle Co./Wilmington. Very nice trail to walk or bike on and a great place to go turtle spotting!
Bowen Butler (The Whitaker Review)
Great walking and biking (bikes can be rented on the 3rd floor of the main building) path through the marsh lands. Kayaks also appear to be available to rent to journey down the water way.
There is also a smaller viewing area to be able get closer and be able to capture the wildlife.
As it is just turning toward spring many animals were not viaible just yet, but the beginnings of new life were evident as the mating croaks of the frogs and small fish could be heard and seen along the walk.
There are several species of birds, reptiles, mammals and fish that call these marsh lands home. Information on them can be viewed or inquired about in,the visitors center.
Worth checking out, especially if you're a lover of nature. All animal sculptures in the information are models and most erred made entirely of wood, which is a plus.
A fifth star cannot be awarded as there is a fair amount of trash within the marsh areas and the information area display cases were a bit strewn about. Additionally, the descriptive pieces forbthe displays were merely folded computer paper and positioned a bit off so the viewer has to consistently change there perspective in order to pair description and piece being described.
Snow Byrd
If you want to connect with nature this is the place. Very beautiful and relaxing.
Laura Hall
It was so hot we really didn't stay long....talked with one of the worker about the bike path, the two family of beavers who live at either end of land, which I thought was interesting ...and how the water flows..would go back when it's cooler out.
Joanne Matikonis
It was a beautiful day and the surroundings matched. The landscaping was gorgeous. I loved the nature center and the guides. It is truly a great place for spending the day.
Ali Ersheid
Great outdoor area whether you want to walk around or observe nature. Very relaxing.
Daniel Ward
Did a great job on my car. Would recommend to all of my friends and family
Greg Lindner
I like very much what they have done linking up with the Jack Markell trail. The tidal marsh life was awesome with birds, frogs, and turtles everywhere. I even got up close to a tiny fawn. Picture is posted along with a turtle next to the trail. Avoid Summer evenings; although a bit cooler and shaded in many parts, the insects can be overwhelming. Sunscreen and repellent highly recommended... and watch the weather forecast. The middle of the trail is a 30 minute walk in the rain if you're not prepared.
Krista Willis
What a beautiful place to stroll along the boards and watch nature come alive in the morning! Today there was a family of cardinals below the Jack Markell Bridge. I could spend hours here watching all the wildlife!
Phil
Fantastic place for Nature lovers. Very well kept. Excellent biking trails as well. Must visit.
Lisa Garnett
Beautiful scenery. We stumbled across a Potter's Field and a Women's Prison
Brian
Great spot to visit. Nice views of the marsh, city line and river.
Grishma Kumar
Great jogging track. Peaceful walkway close to the city. The creek is a calming sight too.. Usually crowded with joggers, walkers and cyclists.
Leonard Harrison
Wonderful place to walk and enjoy the sounds of nature. I have lost 10lbs in one month walking!
Shane Godshall
This is a beautiful refuge. My children love to explore this place.
Billy Potts
This place is beautiful, rock garden is a gem. Once the construction is completed this riverfront will compete with the Schuylkill River park in Phila.
Randall Burch
Great afternoon visit, beautiful piece of nature and opportunity to appreciate the role wetlands play in a balanced environment.
John Brereton
Be area that is sure to get more attention once the bike path from New Castle gets completed
Jared Schierbaum
I ride, run and walk here at least once a week. It is amazing to walk around every time of year. I see something new all the time.
Bhoktear Mahbub Khan
Not only you but your kids will love it too!!
FM Hewitt
Walking and cycling path that is meticulously maintained, nice and wide to accommodate multi-use with ease, park officers patrol regularly on bikes and are very helpful if you have questions. Restrooms were open. Beautiful gardens and view, canoeing and kayaking available. If you have not visited this park, you are missing out on a natural gem.
R Houseman
What a great place to visit. The frogs were mating and a great blue heron was feeding.
Partha Bagchi
Always a great place for hiking when you finish with the Riverwalk. Watch out for all the construction along the way.
Igor Ostrovsky
Amazing place. You can walk on well established trail all the way to Delaware River near New Castle. Or bike. Or just watch a sunset from DuPont center observation tower. Great views of Cristina River too
C T
The 8 mile path is a great way to get-away for a while and find your center or get the exercise that you need. I enjoyed the experience ☺️.
T S
Hot day. Enjoyed the scenery, wildlife, history and geocaching.
Joe Polimeni
I have been coming to Wilmington for many years and didn't realize the waterfront in Wilmington has expanded. Engineers did a tremendous job with preserving the area and creating a beautiful way to take advantage of walking with nature. Nice brand new paved walkways and trail that can take you from the riverfront to new castle. I will definitely come back to enjoy this place including the nice restaurants along the river. Many thumbs up here. Gotta go.
Shay Seaborne, CPTSD
A gorgeous place to be on a breezy day! The rolling waves of marsh grass are magical. Great view from the observation deck of the nature center.
Monique Heard
This is such a beautiful place to walk and ride bikes with your family while you enjoy sightings of wildlife.
bsjdjdksjdnd shdjvjjdjd
Great park and awesome walking trail
michael rojas
If u like water without the long drive from the city to the beach, then this is ur spot.
Michael Gennett
Great trails for walking, running, biking with great views that run through marshes Ann's along river! Super Nature Center that is kid friendly and free with friendly knowledgeable staff. Walk to food, shopping, movies. Overall great place for yourself, a date, family and friends to get outside at minimal to zero cost!
vampin vixen
What a beautiful place to take a walk near the city. I love the fact its on the river front.
Richard Rees
Beutiful walkway around river and refuge area
Randall Ewing
With the new addition that was built to the nature refuge center I was able to explore the marshes and natural areas further in depth than I could have previously without taking a boat, kayak, or canoe. The new path is open to walkers, bikes, scooters, and I would imagine roller blades but you may want to check the latter. The path was freshly decked, clean and ready for use. I cant wait until the weather warms up to take my bike out and ride the path to Old New Castle. Of you're into scenic nature trails this new spot is where you should come.
Jeff Gorak
It's a nice place. A little bit of wildlife in the city. View of the city in the distance is great. There are 2 little trails, one in the woods and one over marsh. They have stations that teach about nature. They tend to leave a bowl of water for the dogs. It's really small, though. Enough to get away but not enough to explore much. Probably a good place to take a child to teach them. I teach my dogs about nature there.
Cassandra Harmon
This place is very serene. It's nice to stroll the area with family or friends. Stairs are present; ADA compatible too with an elevator or ramp. A small museum is near the marsh area. Call or visit for the open dates & times.
Carl Wahlig
Love riding the Jack A. Markell Trail!
Kathy Tyrrell
What a treat it is to have this wonderful refuge right at the edge of the city! Every visit brings new experiences.
Nora Koon
Beautiful area! Well maintained paths lead you throughout the wildlife area. Depending on if you visit during high or low tide, different animals can be seen. This place is one of Wilmington's hidden gems and is a wonderful walk for the whole family including the dog! I would recommend a visit to anyone and everyone!
Brett Skipper
The Russell Peterson Wildlife Refuge offers a different hiking/biking experience from most other Delaware trails. This is a raised or paved Marsh trail that runs from the Riverfront to New Castle. The scenery is somewhat desolate but still beautiful in it's own way. It's a great way to get some exercise and enjoy views of a Marsh that you normally wouldn't get to see up close.
Darlene Murdaugh
Our childcare group was there and they had a wonderful time!
Justin Enright
Within walking distance of the city is this beautiful fresh water tidal marsh. The beautiful information station is staffed by extremely friendly and informative people. They have built a wonderful walkway out into the marsh which connects to a nature trail. It's an easy to walk, and you wouldn't believe the huge variety of animal life. Birders will especially like this place.
Make sure to ask about how this amazing wildlife preserve was founded and maintained. I laughed at the absurdity of it.
Nicole B
My kids loved walking here. Over the bridge, climbing on rocks, collecting rocks, identifying animals. It was cold but it was fun. The view from the top of the environmental center is amazing
Mo A
I take my young daughter here all the time. Nice having an eco-center so close to the city. The paths by the water and the views are beautiful. The center there is a great place to get a high overview of both the city and the marshland by the river.
Jared Schierbaum
I ride, run and walk here at least once a week. It is amazing to walk around every time of year. I see something new all the time. Great place to bring the family to get some fresh air and experience some spectacular views.
Candida Alcaide
Great place for a relaxing walk, especially from the riverfront to the refuge. It's currently under construction but, the detours are just as scenic and the refuge has a new bridge addition that's perfect for even more walking.
Julie Fuller
Very pretty scenery but the bikers make walking very stressful and there are a great many bikers. It's also in the sun with little shade. It's be a nice walk if not for all the bikers who generally are fairly rude to the walkers.
Paul DAVID
Great place but the noise of the highways around kills it. Nice to have a trail to New Castle.
Don Brovero
First time, will not be the last. Delaware does an amazing job with preserving their wildlife. This is a definite visit. They have a marsh walk that is brand new. Great for running, biking and walking. You need to visit.
Desiree Flath
Nice boardwalk in tidal area
Thomas Platt
Great area to get out for a walk. Not enough parking at the Refuge, but the Riverfront parking area is nearby. A very popular place now that the Jack Markel Trail is now open, which goes from the city of New Castle to the Wilmington Riverfront.
The Moran Family
Nice scenery, great place to bike or walk and close to riverfront activities and restaurants!
Jennifer Krantz
Beautiful place for some evening exercise
Maria Shackelford
A beautiful preserve to hike or bike.
Cheryl Clemens
Gorgeous restoration of a natural habitat. Staff member was very informative and polite. Need to have water for sale as it is a long way to a restaurant.
Christopher Scarcelle
Not a bad place to take a walk when the weathers nice. Depending on the time of year you go, it can be very nice, or I can have a ton of bee's, so if you're allergic take your precautions..
Jer Del
An absolute beautiful diamond in the rough of Wilmington. This is a great place to go and be connected to nature and the wildlife that still exists even within the city limits. Even though it's right next to the Blue Rocks stadium and close to the interstate, it's peaceful, tranquil, and offers beautiful scenery along the river and wetlands. From the bridge leading over the train tracks, you get a great view of downtown Wilmington too. The actual refuge walking path is a curvy boardwalk through a portion of the wetlands with benches and even little "docks" that jut out even further into the water to offer an up close opportunity to see the wildlife.
Jeff Fulks
Nice place for a walk. Not that keen on the creosote on the walkway. The odor doesn't seem natural..
Tay Roj
My 3,4 and 8 yr old sons really love this place. They love going into the information center and checking out whatever little things they have going on in there. They love taking the short walk around the marsh and discovering little things here and there. Some days we get alot of action. Other days not much is going on. Such is life when dealing with nature I guess. We have seen Eagles, osprey, blue heron and the list goes on. My children are animal lovers to the cure and particularly fond of birds. If you or your children arent then it might not be fun for you. We have a great time whenever we go.
Jeremiah Ingersoll
Always like taking the kids for a walk here or bike ride on the board walk. Love the new addition. Keep up the good work!
CarmenMonoxide
This is a nice place to disconnect and get out to nature. It's well maintained and easy to navigate especially for me (walking disability). I'll intend to visit as often as possible.

Lovely if a bit stark - Churchman's Marsh is an incredible reservoir of life, but you need sharp eyes to see beyond the grasses. Spend some time, and hone your vision.

Thank you, Delaware, for investing in such a beautiful and accessible nature loving infrastructure! You brought much money to your municipality in the way of beer and ice cream money from me and my cronies. Other cities take note!

E. Perez
This was a very peaceful scenic walk with the kids. There was good parking and very clean bathrooms in the educational center.
Lee Waters
sometimes solitude is bliss, and from what I can gather, no one goes to this place I accidentally found myself in, allegedly, because I saw nary another soul. well, birds and stuff I did indeed see, but the existence of the avian soul is still very much an up-in-the-air kind of question. that there is what you call a pun, son.
Christina Gosting
We stopped in last second since we were in the area and it was so nice. Very well maintained. Can't wait for their boardwalk to be completed!

Bike trail. Enough said. Only. Negatives:. Very few latrines, if any at all between the Peterson Center & Old New Castle. Also, cell reception can be iffy and there are ZERO emergency buttons to push like you see roadside on 95
