Reviews of Bayside Drive-in Campground
We have camped here few times. Absolutely beautiful place for camping. Beaches are quite and not many people around.
Booking needs to be done way in advance if you want bach campsite.
Showers are clean but toilets are vault toilets but still clean.
Mosquitos are in abundance so have to be prepared for that.
Also, wild horses roam freely sometimes coming to campsite.
I love this park. I come here at least twice a year. This time I was RV camping on the Bayside. Late in the season, so it was quiet and full of wildlife. Enjoyed biking and kayaking.
The sites are on the smaller side and our view was obstructed by other RVs, but the fellow campers were decent, camp hosts were friendly, and accommodations were pleasant. Horses freely walk through the campgrounds.
Fantastic campground. The site really felt like it was private even in loop C where generators are allowed. We had horses walking through camp the whole stay and they were fantastic to watch. There was a bit of trash left by the previous site tenants but we were able to pick it up pretty quick. A great place with easy access to the bay and the ocean.
Wow, what a beautiful area. The campgrounds are very nice. Oceanside CG is the preferred over Bayside. Oceanside has easy access to the beach and is nice and breezy. Both have cold showers only which feels great on a warm day. You will definitely see plenty of wild horses which is a bonus.
There are two parks side by side, one is national and other one is state. We booked the national one not being aware that there are two parks. Bathrooms are mobile toilets style and they were horrible. We couldnt spend a minute in them and luckily we found a spot in the state park. The bathrooms in the state park were amazing and we moved to that. So be aware of that. Also the entrance to the national park was 30$ for camp ground and 25$ per each car whereas it was just 35$ in state park and no additional charge for car.
The campsite we had was alright, the grass was high in places, the bugs were terrible and the bath house was terrible. The horses were cool, they didn’t give us any problems but the raccoons did. We still enjoyed our trip and made the best of it, but probably won’t stay in that area again without an RV or camper.
Great views awesome place to visit will definitely go back again. We had a great time here. Its off season rite now but it was alittle chilly n windy. Great 0lace to go camping or just check out the great views.
We loved this place. The wild horses sold us. Passed through a few years ago and had to come back. Campground was well maintained and great for families. Cold water only in the showers. Beach was very clean and ocean temp was around 22 degrees C. Lots of wild life and great trails. We brought our bikes which made exploring the area amazing. Very close to stores and amenities. We will be back.
I was *this* close to giving this place 4/5 stars for the sole reason that it was disappointing they charge $20 on top of the rates you pay when you stay/camp at the park- it adds up. I understand the need to charge visitors but it's costly when you're already paying the park each night. Anyway, the stay was marvelous and made up for it. We were there in November and not very many people were around and it was perfect. We feel like we'll never get the opportunity of having the Atlantic all to ourselves again. The horses walk right up on the second loop campground around noon where we were staying. They stay in that general area all day. We stayed in site 26 where we could see the dunes and ocean from the back of our camper. Overall, a great time and a beautiful place.
Great place to camp! Beach, kayaking, biking. Quiet at night. Know that your camping reservation doesn't include admission to the park. You have to pay to get your vehicle in, but it is worth it.
Awesome campground. Lots of wild horses and deer. Grass is long but thats for the horses. Cool little beach. Hiking and biking trails.
This is my happy place, LOVE AI! Respect the islands rules, this is the horses (and other wildlife) home, we are only visitors!
Went camping a little over a month ago and couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Horses did attempt to come towards our camp site while cooking dinner, but scared them away by clapping tow logs together. Sunrise at the beach ❤️🙌🏼. I will 100% be doing this again. …
Beautiful place to stay with great price, the sites are a little close noise wise and I highly recommend buying your firewood outside the campground, theirs is pricey and not treated well. Otherwise amazing!
If you are a beach person it's a right place for you. Horses are beautiful. Main cons - cold showers and bugs.
Easily spent 5 hours walking about with kids ranging from 6-13 without being bored and we didn't even swim. Bring bug spray, sunscreen, and plenty of water.
Beautiful! Kids loved seeing horses everywhere and the marshland trail was stroller friendly. Excellent. Going again tomorrow. Visitor center is great too!
Way to start our trip. So beautiful to see these horses living free without interference. Beautiful beaches. Friendly cheerful rangers.
Free roaming horses mean poop everywhere, even in the campground. A horse ranch on the beach without the ranch.
Just Breathe it all in ... amazing . Dont get too close. The horse bit this lady as it should have. People ruin everything.
Beautiful area and very easily walkable. The wild horses have free reign of the park. (Watch for road apples!) The old ferry dock is great for wildlife and people watching. Only drawback is $25 admission fee, but it is valid for one week.
Great weekend getaway. Stay on the oceanside if you can, way less bugs and a nice breeze. Be prepared to get sand in ALL of the things.
First time camping and it just exceeded my expectations! Showers were clean, the fire pit and table/bench were really nice for cooking - I thought wild horses will come nearby but they did not when we were there. Camping by the ocean is a great experience! We had the chance to see the full moon too and it was beautiful with all the stars!
The beach was beautiful, clean, and I didnt want to leave this little slice of heaven in earth!
Wild horses and us side by side!!
If you are heading for a beach make sure you add time at the enter, as the traffic can get terrible
Much fun all around no crowded beaches if you dont mind a walk
We stayed here for 3 nights and really enjoyed it. The sites are nice and level and there's a good amount of space between the sites. Beautiful place to be. Very windy though, do be prepared for that. Also, the weather can change very quickly, so bring a variety of clothing.
Horse lover paradise! We had a great time in loop A Bayside campground. The wild ponies greeted us every morning with their pursuit of food at our picnic table or water guarding tactics at the water pump. It was a constant battle to stay 40 feet away from them. The site was perfect besides the loud predator generator of our neighboring site. If you want a generator free experience, Loop B is the better option. The ocean beach and bay beach are both within walking distance. The mosquitos were as expected from any camping experience we have had previously. But the "no-see-um's" would go through our pop up camper mesh windows and awaken us promptly at 5am with their biting. Wearing long lasting bug spray with deet worked the best to keep them away. This was a trip we will never forget and was an amazing deal. We plan to come back next summer.
I enjoy coming to the this lovely beach it's nice and definitely a lot cleaner than other beaches I've been too. Also I enjoy seeing the wild horses. I definitely recommend coming to this beach if your in the area.
Great campground Loved it the wild horses were everywhere
Great place for a walk to enjoy surrounding nature.
A true gem. The various walking paths really help you understand the different environments on this barrier island. Beautiful sand beaches. My kids loved reading Misty of Chincoteague after this - ha! Be ready with bug spray in the bug season - they are aggressive and prevalent.
My family lives coming to see the horses and wild life.
Visit Assateague, just do it. But please, for the love of Pete, leave the horses alone! They are wild animals and you are not a horse wisperer.
One of the most beautiful spots to camp especially on the bay side. The ponies were seen every day. Bike riding is easy and plenty of places to go. The facilities are primitive but still worth it!
One of our favorite campgrounds. B Loop is generator-free, which we appreciate. Love the wildlife and the peace.
Not really worth the money if we're being honest. You pay money to pretty much go to the beach and MAYBE if you're lucky you'll see a horse. Most of the time it's horse poop and maybe some deer that you'll see. If you take the one walking trail you'll see crabs, that's cool I guess? The horse thing is really over hyped and this place really isn't worth it. Go to Bethany beach instead or Ocean City. Don't go here. Save your money.
Last I visited Assategue it was 1987. Its as beautiful as it was back then
Very nice place to visit. Bring a kayak and a camera if you want to experience the ultimate in wildlife photography.
Make sure you have really good mosquito repellent!!! This has been the worst I have ever experienced mosquitos. The camp ground is great, and the beaches are nice, but the mosquitos and fly's are absolutely horrible! I feel bad for the horses and all of the bugs they have to deal with.
Great little national seashore. The campground is adequate. The sites are basic but perfect as a base for a day or two at the beach. The beach is pretty and clean. Bay side, there are lots of opportunities for kayaking and other watersports.
Beautiful Day for a bike ride through the park!
A great National Park just south of Ocean City MD. There is an entrance fee but worth every penny to view wildlife especially the wild horses. Great sunsets and sunrises, camping, hiking, canoe/kayak rentals, lifeguard protected beach and an excellent visitor center with classic interpretive displays.
I tent camp on the national side of the island a few times a year, and it never disappoints. Just be aware, the national side has much more rustic accommodations and because of that it also has much less people (a major selling point to me). The bathroom facilities are port-a-potties, and they only have outdoor cold water showers. Many of the tent sites are walk-in sites which means you park your car at a lot and carry all your things into the site. I believe they do have some that you can park next to your site as well. I always camp on the beach though and that isn't an option at those sites. Each site comes with a firering and a picnic table. You are strongly encouraged to keep food in your car or a locked cooler because the ponies will open coolers and steal food. The stars at night are incredible! The wildlife and scenery during the day are breathtaking! The ponies are gorgeous. You can enjoy sqimming at the oceanside beach, or the bayside beach. The bayside has kayak and Stand up paddleboard rentals (I think between $15-20 per hour). The visitors center also offers nature programming for kids and adults throughout the island, be sure to stop-in before you cross the bridge and pick up a calendar of events. The park charges a $20 fee (per car) to enter but it is good for a whole week so if you are camping you can come and go as you please without having to pay another entrance fee. It's very important to bring bug spray because certain times of the year the flies and mosquitoes can be brutal. Lastly, if you have an R/V, or you want to camp closer to your car, or you prefer warm water bath houses - you might prefer the Maryland State campground side of the island; its more densely populated and attracts a more touristy clientele but it has those amenities. I personally prefer the quite and wildness of the national park side better.
Gamping at the national park. Large spaces, paved pads but no W/E/S.
Does have dump stations and fresh water. Showers are cold water and chemical toilets. Beach is amazing but closest town is Berlin, 12 miles away.
Great, staff was wonderful, sites are as promised, paved and level👍. Waking up to the ponies eating right outside our camper was one the kids will always remember. Lots to explore, and almost no cell signal, perfect. …
Love camping here I would mention my favorite site but I don't want it taken before I can reserve it again. However a short trip over the dunes and there is the ocean. There is so much to do here. There are activies planned at the (forgot the name) when you enter the loops the house/center on the ocean side. Horses roam the island as they please they are friendly though wild. You can hunt ghost crabs at night on the beach. The stars are amazing here, you can see the whole milkyway (it feels like) and it's also a shot trip to Ocean City if you're in the mood for the bustle of the boardwalk
Glad there is a place to disconnect and enjoy. At the National Park station right outside the park there is an excellent education center with WiFi for those who can't disconnect. The area is so beautiful, crabbing is fun and easy. You need only a 10 dollar permit if you are out of state.
Best beach in the Mid-Atlantic region. Ocean or Bay side provided a variety of options, along with three beautiful walking routes. I have you have little ones be sure to stop by the ranger station to get their Junior Ranger activity book!
Loved it the camping was good. Mosquitoes were not bad, a couple ticks but we survived. Camp was clean and everyone respectable.
Wild horses visiting camp (emphasis on wild). Easy bicycle ride to a refreshing beach swim. Good bird watching. A pleasant and relaxing place to be outdoors.
One place everyone should visit at least once. The park and horses are awesome. People are annoying but they are everywhere. They need to learn to stay away from the horses like the numerous signs tell them to.
The ponies joined us for dinner one night...made some great memories! Loved it SO Much, we're going back in two weeks to camp right on the beach. Cannot wait!
Amazing! Wild ponies beautiful beaches.
What's not to love. Oh, Sandspurs if you have 2 small dogs. Nothing's perfect.
Wonderful Campground in a National Seashore.
Wild horses and great beaches are the main draw for this beautiful park on Assateague Island. We love coming here early in the season.
Fantastic place. Great for families, a week or even a weekend. Will definitely be coming again and again!
The wildlife and park rangers are the best!
ponies were out. took a self guided tour using my cell to access and hear the spiel. beautiful vista's and nice facilities.
One of my favorite places for bird watching!
Great place to camp. We had 2 horses eating
At last night. So close to my brother's tent. Great beach's too.
It was definitely interesting loved the nature and beauty had first hand experience with the animals 1st night raccoon got into the bananas and marshmallows 2nd day woke up rudely to 2 horses staring in tent at me to hear 3rd 1 coming round back of tent and look out 4th is already attacking bread and cookies lmao 😝😝😝😝 ranger came by at right time and fellow neighboring camper me get out of tent it was an experience for sure
It's Assateague on a beautiful fall day.
Always something to see with the views and wildlife.
We love to stay here for few days. The park & campgrounds super clean & organized.
Wild horses, good beach...all while camping with Goombay!
Stayed here for 2 nights unbelievable place most beautiful I have seen on The east coast!
Spacious sites. Choose ocean or bay. Ocean has electric so is booked well in advance. Bayside has no hook ups. Loop on Bayside is even generator-free.
Great experience here! A little confusion on the phone with one lady, but other than that (and the ever present mosquito) the whole experience was spectacular!
I love coming to Assategue even ifs it a day trip or my 5 day camping trip.. I enjoy all the wildlife and the ponies
Absolutely love this place sometimes the bugs can get to you but it's nothing that some sage in the fire or some wet cider can't fix
It's good so far. Quiet. Nice breeze. Seen tiny deer along with the ponies.
Amazing we got to see horses and all types of wildlife we will definitely be going back with the family!!!!
Best place for camping and seeing the wild horses. You need to come and see for your self.
Best relaxation place on earth!!
Best place to take the kids, to see wild horses and other wild life 💯 …
Been camping many times in more primitive campgrounds than this, and they were way better. Don’t camp here.
My favorite place to spend a day! Ponies, deer and birds are sometimes rare!
Great visit. All the trails we're in excellent condition.
Seen the horses as soon as we crossed over the bridge. Great experience.
Good but no shade.... not a tree in sight
Regarding the bay, per my wife "Super nice place to see so many disgusting creatures!"
Tons of mosquitos. Repellents didn't help me. I would prefer Oceanside campground
Some of my favorite camping around. DON'T pet the ponies.
Mosquitos! Knee high grass, poor parking angles, absolutely beautiful!
It was nice had a good time looking at the ponies and turtles
a treasure on earth. visit but keep it clean. dont speed they will get you

Our golden doodle keeping an eye on a pretty filly from our Bayside campsite.
To spend a single day I found it a bit expensive but ok.
