Every time my fiancé and I come here we spend a small fortune but it’s worth it, especially when you’re like me with Hashimotos disease (causes you to be perpetually cold) and you can’t find a better place carrying brands to keep me warm without layering! REI is more than a store that has the best selection and quality gear. I just took part in this stores first campout at First Landing State Park and I had such a blast. What stood out the most was definitely the REI team. Kaitlyn, Kate, and Stephen were beyond exceptional. So friendly, welcoming, prepared, organized, and inclusive. I drove from Jacksonville, NC almost 4hrs away and I would do it again because the 3 of them worked so hard to make it such a great experience. I wasn’t sure what to expect at first because I’ve never done one of these events. They had an absolute toy store of camping gear already set up when we got there. Hammocks, games, lanterns, glow sticks, string lights, community fire, chairs and blankets, charcoal for the grill, A1 s’mores stuff, coffee and snacks for the morning, and even a gift bag with a stainless steel cup. Be prepared to get the camping gear fever seeing all the gear in action. I ended up going by the store and spending $200 on a whim (no regrets). A lot of thought and effort went into putting an event like this together and it just showed how great a job REI does of assembling their team because every employee I met from that store doesn’t seem like they are working. It seems like they’re doing what they love. I enjoyed it so much I will definitely do another on and I think I’m going to have to consider booking an REI adventure sometime. Thanks again to Kaitlyn, Kate, and Stephen for making the weekend so great. People like you help me forget work and focus back in on some of the simpler joys in life like a relaxing weekend with like minded people.

My husband went to Va Beach REI for hiking boots and hiking shoes. The young woman in shoe area measured his feet and ask numerous questions before bringing out doors and shoes. Rarely does stores have a selection to choose from in size 13, but this REI did. We were able to walk out with a pair of boots and shoes. We got one of them on sale too. I really never went to REI in the past because I thought they were a high end store. We noted that their prices were very competitive. We diffidently will be going back.

Alexis was amazing! We frequent REI and have been members since the Grand Opening in VB and I have never encountered a more genuine employee who went above and beyond to help us. Even to the point of catching us walking out of the door to say she found exactly what we were looking for (through the outlet) even though REI wasn’t suppose to have the “ON CloudMasters” in stock. Her expertise was superb. She is truly one of those “one of a kind employees” who needs to be valued. Kudos to Alexis and she will be a huge reason why my family will keep coming back rather than just ordering online.

Ohhh REI! One of my most favorite places to shop for, well, you guessed it, outdoor gear!The staff is always friendly and welcoming and while I mostly only buy socks (Darn Tough) because its one of they few things made in the US. I still really enjoy the CO-OP and have been a member for decades.

I stopped in the other day to get my bike tuned that I was passing down to my son. The associate John quickly grabbed my bike though he was also helping other customers with a purchase and asked me to wait. There was a bit of a wait as he had to make sure their bike was ready to ride and I got to see him in action, great attention to detail. He then checked my bike to see what work would be required and immediately resolved a shifter issue I couldn’t figure out. I was so impressed with John’s knowledge, demeanor and service that I actually inquired about a bike there. I had just purchased a bike from another local sporting goods retailer as I had great experiences with my previous two. Unfortunately the one from the local competitor was poorly built and after taking it in once, I was not impressed with their bike tech telling me that my brake was rubbing because I don’t supposedly don’t know how to install a quick release tire on a model I’ve owned two of for four years. That aside, my experience at REI was night and day. John offered me the chance to test ride their XL Drt 1.1. I watched John get the bike ready and heard it, the infamous brake rub from my current bike. The REI tech put his ear to it from different angles, whipped out his tool and resolved it in a minute, I was sold then and there. I then took the bike out for a wonderful ride in their parking lot and came in to purchase. I had zero intention of buying a bike that day, but the REI bike tech was outstanding and pleasant. Knowing I’d get a year of free adjustments really helped as well.

The help was exceptional and honest. They helped me find exactly what I needed. Ike.. I think was the guys name, explained how the co-op membership was worth it to me and my family. The older I get the more I enjoy the outdoors and it's great to have a place locally I can turn to for quality advice and gear. On a subsequent visit I had an issue and the guy at the counter quickly realized the issue needed a manager and boom. Problem solved and I was on my way quickly.

At a seemingly "big box" store you might expect to pay a ridiculous mark-up but here it's not that way and it's truly appreciated! I will make sure to continue to shop at REI.

I absolutely adore outdoor stores and REI certainly is an excellent store for all things outdoors! This location has particularly attentive staff, ever present to provide assistance. I was quickly directed to what I needed, but I felt that the selection of Buffs was a bit lacking today. I found a pattern I liked, but all the patterns seemed sort of similar with very close-neighbor colors. The attractiveness of the product could be greatly improved by a wider range of these attributes.

Fantastic, I was only in there for about a minute to get my dog Phil a collapsible water dish, staff was very helpful, and friendly to both me and Phil. A lot of the stuff in there is a little pricey for what it is, but what camping store isn't like that? Overall good experience with them, and Phil loves his new travel bowl.

I called ahead and asked if there was a specific item in their store. The woman on the phone was courteous and very helpful. She even put the item oh hold for 24 hrs. I went by the store later in the day and everyone was wearing their masks and keeping with social distancing guidelines. I walked to the bike shop and a gentlemen there was quick to help me. I described my issue and he was quick to offer a solution.

This REI is excellent! I've purchased two different pairs of hiking boots and shoes here as well as countless hiking and SPF items to see me through some adventures to Yosemite, Utah's mighty Five and a bunch of other Natural Park trips. Staff are always helpful - offering assistance when needed and offering their input and guidance on the items you're looking for for a particular trip or need. You can also shop online and pick it up in store as I did with some SPF dive pants before a snorkel trip to the Seychelles a few months ago. Easy as pie. I ordered and paid online and showed them my ID at the front and they had it ready and bagged up! Their REI dividends program is excellent where you actually get a portion of your previous year's spend toward the next year's purchases. I love this. Also, their return policy is insanely generous where you can buy something, try it and use it, and have a year to bring it back no questions asked. Even if it's been used and is clearly not new! What?!?! Blows my mind they do this. They later will sell those during their annual sales at discount but it's amazing. I don't often return anything but I'm more willing to shop here and buy something to try it knowing they'll take it back if it doesn't work for me without making me raise hell. I love that they have monthly classes here as well. That's a nice touch. You can sign up for their email list and will be notified of the topics and dates every month.

I searched Google for a Bike shop that can repair my daughter’s bike and I came across REI. I called and spoke to Jason. At my arrival to the store the whole staff were very friendly and welcoming. Cassie helped me and she was amazing. I can’t recalled of the last time I was in a store and the workers asked if I needed help with anything. I will continue to shop there for all my Bikes need. I was trying on sunglasses here and had my mask up. It's difficult to tell if the glasses look good or not with the mask up, so I pulled my mask down for not even one minute to quickly try on a few pairs, only to be approached by an employee telling me to put my mask up. Great products, great cashier at checkout, but employees are too concerned about customers wearing masks instead of asking if I needed assistance.

My latest visit was the same experience. Very friendly and helpful. They take the time to answer questions. You feel like you have gotten your money's worth when you leave. Still a great store. This may be my new sporting goods store. Uber friendly staff who doesn't make you feel dumb for asking questions. Great selection and what a variety. I will go back. They were so helpful.

Did a curbside pickup order for 2 sizes of the same shoe since I didn't know which would fit. They brought them out, let me try both on to see swich ones fit, took the other pair back & only charged for the 1 pair. They came out quickly and were so helpful. Highly recommend this store!

Excellent experience as always. Had to beat back what seemed like every employee in the store checking up on me, simply because I hate help. Finally I caved and flagged somebody down, glad I did! They were very knowledgeable and socially gregarious and I can only imagine that I would have gotten the exact same experience and treatment from any one of the other REIpeeps that I had previously brushed away with a "No thanks! Just browsing.". They are geuniely there to help, they are at work and earning a paycheck just like every other retail associate but it feels different because they are just as excited about climbing/camping/biking etc. as you are, maybe even more-so. If you have an REI near you and you're a human who goes outside, check it out. The store will make you want to be more active, it's weird.

I went into the store with my two boys so we can each be fitted for backpacks for our up coming hiking trip. I have to say that the associate Kate was phenomenal. She fitted us each individually and then showed us how to pack the backpack and then had us walk around for awhile to see how we felt in them. I’m definitely glad I drive over an hour to go to this store. Definitely will be returning in the future.

TL;DR- the best customer service you could ask for. I bought a tent as a garage sale item at the REI in Richmond. Almost 1 year later I went to use said tent for the first time- advertised as having a broken zipper on the rain fly- and discovered the frame was broken to the point it could not be assembled as-is. I walked into this REI (new-to-me) and found Kate, who honestly informed me I could not return or be refunded the tent, but then spent over an hour helping me trouble-shoot, and even enlisting her talented team to help saw and grind the broken tent pole in order to make my weekend camping trip possible. Cannot say enough good things about these employees and their ability to turn a poor experience into a great one.

Super friendly and helpful. Went in needing some shoe advice for pretty specific needs. Wide feet, gore-tex, trail runners, etc is nearly impossible to find. When they didn't have exactly what I needed they pointed me to few local shops that could help. A brown haired young guy with a rainbow pin knew his stuff and got me sorted. Circled back after coming up totally empty everywhere else and ended up getting help from a woman with braided blonde hair. She brought me a few more options that checked some but not all options and when it was clear the combo I needed wasn't available at REI she started searching the manufacturer to see if she could help me solve the problem elsewhere. This sort of customer commitment to solve the problem is why I come to REI first. If I can get what I need there I always will. If I can't then I know I'll get good advice and ideas of where to look next. Wish I got the staff's names because they took such good care of me.

I had barely gotten any sleep the night before due to loud neighbors, and then I walked out of my job to find my bike with a flat tire. I did a quick web search and found REI listed within walking distance. Didn't even know it existed! When I called to inquire about my situation and setting an appointment, I discovered they do everything by walk-in appointment. I spoke with 2 people over the phone and both were genuinely friendly and helpful. As soon as I arrived in their store, they immediately got to work fixing my tire and were so thoughtful and accommodating by bringing me a chair to rest in (anyone who works in a kitchen KNOWS the struggle is real), without my having to ask. Everyone with whom I interacted, from the initial phone call to the door greeter to the technicians to the cashier were welcoming, kind and professional. I was able to ride home feeling like the day had been redeemed! I am grateful for REI's assistance and appreciate their affordable prices. They fixed my tire for 1/4 the cost of the other place I went to previously. You live and you learn....Now I will ONLY go to REI!

UPDATE: Just a reaffirmation that REI, and particularly the bike shop, is just plain awesome. Came in knowing I had a bottom bracket issue with my vintage Cannondale. All I wanted to know was what tools I would need to fix it. I quickly realized it would be cheaper for them to do it than buy the tools. They had the part in stock and since they know I live 80 miles away, they did it for me same-day, on a Saturday no less. $65 total. Great job again, folks!! I have been an REI member since 1979 when they had 1 store and did everything by mail order. I wrote my first check at age 13 for $12 for a pair of glacier glasses. I have been in several stores around the country, including the original in Washington. This is overall the best one I have been in. Are they expensive? Yes, but if you want good service and quality products, you have to pay for those things. If you are a member, you get a 10% dividend on purchases. I splurged and bought a new bike here 2 years ago. I wanted some customization done and fenders installed. The only day I could come was Veteran's Day. Doug came in before the store opened to meet me and get my bike and customization parts. He worked for 3 hours to put on a different handlebar, shifters, brake levers and the fenders. It only cost $80 labor for all of that. Plus, I bought the bike during a period when they were doubling dividends on purchases, so I was able to get a nice riding jacket, pedals, and fenders with that. I attended a derailleur workshop. "Sweet Tea" was the instructor and did a fantastic job. I have set limit screws and indexed 2 bikes since then. I needed a new chain in October, a job I could do myself, but for $9 labor, I let them do it. They did it in no time, and the newbie tech who worked on it was so excited to ask me how I liked the Jones bar. I drive an hour and 45 minutes passing numerous bike shops to come here. It is well worth it. As for some of the comments about the masks; REI was the first store I went to that absolutely required masks. Now many others are following suit. I am glad they care about their customer and employees health.

I can not complain. For everything but the small items, this will be my go-to. But who needs a 12$ fork anyways? Love this store.

Do they have all yours outdoor camping needs? Yes and much more!!! This is really a fantastic store with the customer service to back it up. I have only visited a few times as I prefer LL Bean for the types of items the carry. With Hurricane Florence bearing down on the Carolinas and Virginia there were a lot of people looking for those essentials to deal with no power. I had great interactions with floor personnel and on checkout. Unfortunately the were out of battery operated lanterns. However I did pick up a large back up multi port charger for cell phones. I would recommend checking them out in Town Center. They have all your outdoor needs under one roof. 4.5, rounding up with excellent customer service during a busy period. Move over LL Bean, I'm mixing in REI now.

A big selection of outdoor and fitness products. From bicycles to rock climbing they have what you need. The staff is amazingly friendly and knowledgeable. All the products are high quality from high quality names. They even have a bike shop. Great deals can be found in the garage sale area.

I called the store on Christmas eve about a bike chain that was messed up on my daughters Christmas gift. They told me to come in and see what they could do. Even though the bike was purchased at another store, they took the time to get the chain repaired. The associates were so friendly and caring. Definitely would recommend them for anyone in need of bicycle repairs. They are truly experts of bicycles and customer service!

Helpful staff, great selections, decent sales, and they offer regular classes. Returns & exchanges are easy; if you buy a one time membership that also gives you annual dividend you don't even need a receipt. I'm so pleased that I don't have to wait to visit family in Denver or NoVA to shop at REI, or order on line. Yes, it is a 'chain' but a co-op one that anyone can be a part of. I've also gone on one of their trips to Belize and it was well-run.

REI is still a relevant store for sporting goods, especially for seeing what you are buying. With climbing equipment and other sports, your life and health can depend on your gear, and being able to inspect it before purchasing can be key to a good experience. I went for to try on some climbing shoes, and was a little disappointed to find out they had no Black Diamond Shadow in stock, and no climbing walls to test like many other locations have/had. The staff was helpful, if a little sparse. Overall, it was a good experience even with the minor deficits. Will definitely shop here again.

This store has everything you need for camping,hiking,biking and other outdoor activities.REI is a Co-Op which means they are a vital part of the community and give back to the community.You can become a member for a fee of 20.00. Once a year they have a huge garage sale for members....the next one is October 19,2019. This store is a must stop for all things outdoors. Although the gear is a bit more expensive, the friendly and VERY knowledgeable staff as well as the good return policy is worth it! The company also gives a lot back to environmental causes & the community. Join the co-op for even more benefits! It's great that REI has come to Virginia Beach!

After contacting several local bike shops and hearing 3+ week wait times for minor front-brake work , I contacted REI who estimated 9 days IF the walk-in assessment deemed the work was substantial enough. I brought the bike in that day, and the brake service was complete within an hour. And it was cheap! Its not like they had a staff of 20 people working in their bike shop, either; as much as I'd like to support local businesses, sometimes the "big corporations" are just the better choice.

First time there bought some shoes liked the varity. Had great customer service the representative, he was there when I needed him and he was very helpful. Be came a co-op member will see how that works out. Love that you get access to state parks with your purchases.

They are the only store that sale Hoka One One that I know of in the area, except the Exchange. This shoe is by far, the best running shoes there is. The sales woman was very helpful. Excellent customer service. This was my first time to visit. I will come back. Hopefully they are like this all the time.

Great place to shop for specialty items that is for outdoor purposes and activities, they sell a product that is called the solo fire pit, & it is almost smoke free, wood burning only. If you are in va, beach at town center then just go look to see what I'm talking about, you can window shop, & possibly find something that you can work a little harder for to buy something that you want. I'm going back soon, I saw something that I want so it's time to start saving for when I go back I can buy it. YEAH!!!!!!!!!!

I've only been here three times since the store opened, and I have yet to be disappointed. On my first visit, my boyfriend wanted a jacket that was waterproof and great to wear during the winter months and an associate helped him every step of the way suggesting great products. My boyfriend was leaving a very happy camper. On my second and third visit, I was on the hunt for waterproof shoes that would also be ideal for standing long periods of time. Unfortunately, I did leave empty handed because shopping for shoes is dreadful in my world, but I was given suggestion after suggestion and each associate that helped me was a pleasure to work with. It's not necessarily a place I'll return to often, but because of the great customer service, I'll always keep it in mind as an option. The store is always clean, also, and they have a great selection. I don't think you'll be disappointed!

My husband is in the area for Coast Guard training and I was visiting him when we went to this REI for the labor day sale. We are moving to Kodiak, AK from Florida so we need a lot of winter gear and we didn't really know where to start. So many of the employees here so incredibly helpful, so we could find exactly what we needed. From finding the perfect baby wearing carrier, to what we should look for when we layer our winter gear for hiking, and finding the best hiking boots. We received help from so many of the different employees, all with very good information and so nice the whole time. I would go here regularly if I lived in the area

The store itself is really great and when you can find a staff member they are helpful and always knowledgeable. The only complaint I have is that there aren't ever enough staff on the floor. I was working with someone and they left to help another customer, but it took so long that I genuinely lost interest. It is a fun store though, but just be aware of the potential wait time.

The absolute best store anywhere to get your outdoor gear. The employees are incredibly helpful because they actually do the outdoor activities in the departments they work in. They sell great products, not the Ozark Trail quality crap that other stores (Dick's, Academy, The Sports Authority, etc.) sell. This has caused some to say they're overpriced, but when they have overlapping products with other stores, let's say Dick's, REI is the same price and even sometimes cheaper! Plus there is the 1 year no questions asked return policy that really makes REI shine. Be sure to get an REI membership for $20. You get a 10% annual dividend and are alerted to the garage sales they hold every so often.

Generous return policy. I purchased a Hydroflask here back in January and the recipient just now had gotten around to using it. The bottle doesn't stay cold and leaks quite a bit, so I called to see if it could be returned (with original receipt) and was told they allow exchanges up to a year.

We've been shopping for hiking boots for my son for weeks. He's had issues with boots in the past causing his big toe to go numb on long hikes. Visiting specialty backpacking equipment stores didn't seem to help. It wasn't until we visited REI Virginia Beach that we found someone who seemed to know what they were talking about. He was super helpful, and gave solid advice on what kind of boot would work best. After trying on dozens of shoes at other stores the REI salesman (I wish I caught his name) brought out three pair based on what he thought would work. All three fit better than any we've tried, and we settled on one pair that was perfect. So, long story short, I highly recommend REI Virginia Beach.

Since our local store has opened I have already placed several online orders to the store for pickup #freeandeasy. For those haters who think it is too expensive, maybe you don't know how to shop or be a part of the coop family because the coop gear REI produces is top notch for a great price and the customer service can not be surpassed. The no hassle returns and product guarantee is worth every penny. I have never personally experienced the bad customer service of other outdoor companies or had the hassle of trying to return a possibly lower priced piece of gear from a random online retailer. I have only heard the stories from buddies around the campfire. So to all the haters I say, I'll keep buying my gear from REI like I have been all these years and you can keep the camp stories fresh!
