Reviews of False Cape State Park
Malcolm K
Absolutely gorgeous place to bike. I love that you can’t get into False Cape by car, it makes the experience safer and it feels more meaningful. The gravel is really pleasant to bike on for the most part, there are some roads that have a lot of potholes, but you can mostly ride along the edge without issue. There’s a lot of shade, which makes it comfortable, but there are a lot of bugs (as well as some snakes and turtles!) - the back bay side has less shade. I’d love to camp here. You could definitely kayak from little island to their campsites. It’s $5 to drive into back bay, and just a heads up that it’s a small parking lot, and trailers aren’t permitted!

False Cape is a challenging but spectacular State Park. It may only be a few miles from Virginia Beach, but it feels like you're in the wilderness. It is not accessible by motor vehicle (for the general public) so it's almost deserted. We have hiked to the park, but if you are camping I highly recommend renting a bicycle with a trailer. Ocean Rentals dropped off ours at Little Island Park - very convenient since that's where you have to park your car if you're camping. It's a ~10 mile bike ride to the campgrounds (the last 200 yards in soft sand). So, it's inaccessible. It's also buggy! Choose a warm fall/spring weekend rather than a summers day - the biting flies are murderous in summer! If you get it right though, WOW, this place is beautiful. The campsites are primitive but fine...and if you feel adventurous you can camp on the beach! We loved the sunset, sunrise, the wildlife, the primitive camping...the whole experience.

Trails are mostly roads, but easily accessible. Spent the night camping right on the ocean front. Certainly an amazing place. Make sure you wear good walking shoes or save a lot of time by riding a bike.

An awesome destination. The fact that you have to either hike or bike to most of the best locations is a big plus. Almost everywhere we went we had the entire place to ourselves. Next visit we will tent one night on the beach. If you are in decent physical condition it’s worth the effort.

Don't forget to BRING A BIKE! Parking in Back Bay leaves you 4.2 miles from the False Cape Visitors Center (3.5 to park +0.7 to VC). And another mile to the sandy Atlantic beach. You can walk, but it's a long, unremarkable gravel road. And then you have to walk back! A nice glimpse of Back Bay along the way, but it's in full sun with often a stuff breeze. You might get lucky with animal sitting - I saw a deer grazing, a turtle crossing the road, and a raccoon wandering about. Once in False Cape, there's a lot of beautiful speckled shade on the trails that are mostly under pines and live oaks. Again, the road isn't exciting, but there a few beautiful groves of live oaks. It's the lookouts and end points that are the reason for visiting. So much undeveloped coastline! Also, the greeter and ranger at the VC were a-maz-ing. They had lots of recommendations and were very welcoming and engaging. A mountain bike would be useful as the trails/service road has varying degrees of graves, potholes, and puddles. Great trip!

Amazing hike to the beach campsites, beautiful scenery, and well maintained trails. The primitive campsites are 6-8 miles away from the visitor center and you can either hike or bike the trail. We saw lots of wild flowers, deers, snakes, beavers, and turtles along the way.

You can only get here by going through back bay wildlife refuge. The trails were great. We biked all the way to the NC state border from the beach in eaely April. It was cold 60s and windy. We took sand ridge trail down to wash woods trail and took it down to the beach. We had to hike our bikes for a quarter of a mile on wash woods to get to the nice sand on the beach. Vistor center was nice and ranger was super helpful. He gave us tips on getting to the state line. He said when he first talked with us he had his doubt with our 6 year old that we would make it. He said he has seen some very physically fit adults not able to complete the entire trip.
We did the whole trip, about 27 miles, with our 12, 9 and 6 year old. We did stop at the currently closed education center to eat lunch. It had nice benches and picnic tables and we were the only ones there the whole time. There was a tram that was opertaing at the same time while we were riding. We were a little jealous on the people sitting on it just driving past us. The vistor center had some nice merchandise that we bought because only way to buy it was to hike or bike all the way there... or take the tram... they also have a bike repair station outside which was great and flushing toilet with running water. We would probably visit again and try more of the branch trails and take more time exploring. We spent 7 hours just trying to make it to NC and back to the car in back bay wildlife refuge. 2 hrs of that was just snack breaks. The ranger did give my younger kids props for making it to NC and gave them honorary junior ranger pins.

I enjoyed False Cape it's very remount nice hiking trails and the beach is pristine.
You can hike or bike into the park.
Beware the only way in during the waterfowl migration season is via the beach the other trails are impassable during that time.
Matt Tripp
The visitor center has very clean bathrooms and it's a great pitstop. It's tucked away in a forested area so wind out on the open trails is not affected here. Rangers are friendly, and always a great experience!
Do What You Love
Beautiful place but trails aren’t marked well and we got lost and walked our bikes for hours in deep loose sand on the beach. There are camp sites with a pit toilet that are accessible only by bike, boat or foot.
Pamela Edholm
Awesome tram tour with Ralph and Patsy! The history of Wash Woods was really interesting. One of the highlights of our trip.
Kaitlyn Newell
Gorgeous park! Wonderful place to see lots of migratory birds that are overwintering here. The tram ride is very relaxing, the guides are awesome.
Alexandra Powell
We did the First Day Hime 2023. Very knowledgeable guide, friendly, helpful volunteers- it was a really great day. Beautiful park- one of the few places in Hampton roads that truly feels remote.
Brian Parker
Park was serene and chock full o'majestic birdfowl, and free plus dang near empty. Today I walked 16 miles 3 hrs in/3 out from Sandbridge to past the Wash Wood Historic Site. I about died, between the biting yellow flies (right through my tee) and the long distance in this summer heat. LoL. There are 2 or 3 inconspicuous water refill points along the way. There is a reason why everyone else was on bikes. Learn from my mistake. I was sure the passing park staff would take pity and let me solicit them for a lift back! Anyways, the church steeple, if you're going there for this, was semi-anti-climactic due to it being housed for protection. I couldn't even get a decent picture of it after walking all that way due to glare and angles. Veering off the main trail puts you at risk of poison ivy! If you come be prepared and don't underestimate the trail. Also, I saw a river otter cross the road! Cell signal went out but GPS works still.
Kristin
Walked down to the state park today only to find out that I had to take the same trail in return. It’d be great if this was known at the trail head 4.5 miles away that the other trail is currently not open. Easy, flat trail with lots to see this mid-September, including: various tree frogs, dragonflies, grasshoppers, butterflies, birds, turtles, herons, egrets, trees, bushes, etc. along the trail and crabs and jellies on the beach! A few artifacts in the visitor center to checkout but not the typical friendly and engaging staff like at other state parks…
Ian Doran
This is a very unique park in Virginia. We hiked in and camped in the Bay side. It is an amazing environment with wetlands, coastal forests, and dunes. It seems much more isolated than all the other parks we've been too in Virginia. I would highly recommend camping if possible. Early April is fine for bugs, but we hear they get really bad really fast as it heats up.
Kayla Danner
Wish there was a way into the STATE park side without having to hike or bike the 4mile trail through back bay. BTW if you have a state parks pass you still have to pay back bays parking fees.
The state park it self was pretty for the little bit that we saw of it. We really didn't explore it much because we were exhausted from walking to it honestly.
Sarah Waldrop
What a beautiful and rare experience it is to camp on the beach! We stayed for two nights and I will definitely come back and camp again- likely in October when there is a smaller chance of excessive heat and bugs (biting flies and mosquitoes). The trail into False Cape is easily bike-able and saves much time versus walking. My boyfriend and I used a cart with sturdy wheels to transport in our inflatable kayak to go out on the bay which was so worth it. By the end of our trip we had seen dolphins, a snake, turtles, frogs, huge conch shells and heard coyotes. We stayed at Barbour Hill Campground which has a somewhat challenging sandy trail into it. The sites in Barbour Hill are shaded and close together. There's really no beating beach camping, but it's nice to have both options. All staff were very helpful and nice. I will agree with one other reviewer though who said you don't exactly feel like you're completely isolated due to some traffic on the beach. All in all, a great experience and will definitely be back! There's also plenty of water access within the park (from where we stayed) so it was nice not to have to carry that in.

Beautiful Park. It’s an adventure to get to which is why it’s the least visited park in the VA State park system. We took a small boat across Back Bay which was scary, so I recommend hiking, biking or take the Beach Tram thing or whatever you call it. Towards the Carolina border there is an abandoned town (Wash Woods, VA) which is cool to check out. We plan on going back one day to do some primitive camping. If going during warmer months make sure to bring bug repellent and enough water.
Jonathan Grenier
Bring bug spray and a spare tube for your bike. The place was almost deserted when i visited. Looked like an awesome place to camp. Would have spend a lot more time here exploring but found out my bike tire had a leak so we had to cut the trip short.
Kyle King
Beautiful scenes. It's also easy to bike, run, and hike. After the first few miles you hardly see anyone else. Plus, you can camp too.
Caitlin Vigneau
So happy I made it out here! Beautiful park, not very busy, several miles of easy biking trails and peaceful hiking trails.
ed wright
This place is worth the trip. You can only get there by 4 miles of gravel trail that you walk or bike. There is a once a day team on the weekends. Great trails for biking or hiking. I've got 700x32s on my bike and it was comfortable 7 miles into the park until I found some sand. Fat tire or mountain bike would have had no problem.
Jerbony
This trip is like 4 hours so prepare yourself. It was enjoyable our guide was great. My grandkids loved it. Its riding in an open dome bus, walking and several stops, so have fun....
Nick Riedel (trainboy45)
The hike into False Cape is nice and easy and the state park itself is really beautiful. The park rangers are friendly and really helpful. The only complaint is that when my brother and I went camping here, the mosquitos were very bad. But I'm sure they're not as bad later in the year. The sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean is amazing! Can't wait to go back to False Cape!
Lorna Cole
Very great area for hiking and biking. Awesome campgrounds with stunning view at the bay.
Alison M
I love visiting this park! I feel like I've discovered some beautiful secret that only a handful of people know!
It's an easy bike ride for a few miles from the Back Bay Wildlife Refuge to this park on a gravel road and then you are free to explore the park and the trails. A small visitor center is open during the day with t-shirts and toys and snacks and goodies (I always stop and get an ice cream pop as a treat bc it's hot!).
This park is beautiful and, because you can only access by bike or hike, it's remote and untouched by cars and is exceedingly quiet and remote. Beautiful beaches and paths to explore.
There is even an old trail that leads to a church and graveyard from an old community that was here a couple hundred years ago. Pretty neat.
GoKayak! Paddle with a Porpoise
This is a hidden treasure of Virginia Beach. It takes some effort to get to because you can only bike or walk in from Back Bay in Sandbridge. It is 4 miles to the entrance of False Cape. Once youre there there are many more miles to explore and it is very remote. There is a lot of wildlife and you can go all the way to North Carolina!
Frank Mueller
Be prepared to ride or hike in and out. If you are headed to the state marker there is a great visitors center about halfway along the ride complete with a water bottle filler on the side. The road to the state marker does get sandy and the cemetery trail offers a good alternative to get around the worst sandy part if you are on a bike. They do run open air tour buses along the road so bikers need to watch for those, but the driver I encountered was courteous and allowed me to pass when I was riding faster than them. From the state park visitors center to the marker is about 10 miles, so be prepared with water and bug spray (I did see ticks), but there are plenty of great views. Just pay attention to the trail markers. It's worth the time if you are looking for an alternative to the beach!
Christina C
$5 to get in and it was certainly worth it. Awesome gravel bike trail to the left of facility. Tons of turtles and wildlife....just beware of the bugs on the shaded paths.
James Ogden
A very very cool state park. I've visited many of the state parks in Virginia and several accross the country. This is a very remote and basically untouched piece of land for others to enjoy. I traveled along the beach for miles and didn't see anyone until I got down to North Carolina. The gift shop had some food and drinks for a hot day which was nice. Bring sunscreen because it is a very exposed park. Would highly recommend visiting, however I'd also recommend biking in as there's no vehicle access.
Kapten Tony
I loved this park. I saw plenty of wildlife...snakes, deer, bunny, birds, turtles and a beaver. The $5 gate charge is very fair and totally worth it.
David Michalec
Hidden treasure with beautiful trails, constant amazing views, and great campsites. Rangers were helpful and constantly keeping up with maintenence.
Martin Riggs
Beautiful. Nice hiking, biking, camping area. We love the serenity and the very friendly and helpful park staff. Lovely in October as well.
Debi
It's worth the trip. Take the tram or bike, if you don't want to walk.
Aaron Dove
Absolutely beautiful park. I recommend biking in though as it's a long walk to get to the park. Many wonderful overlooks, trails, and rustic camp sites.
Robin Chinn
We just came back from an amazing weekend at False Cape. The beach was beautiful and the experience is one that I will remember for a lifetime. My husband and I were able to camp on the beach. We saw so much wildlife and words can not express the way you can connect with nature. The biting flies were the worst part of the trip. We hiked in and it was a difficult walk but so worth it. I cant say enough how wonderful this place is and can not wait to come back
Christian Howard
A really neat park and quite a hike from back bay. Make sure you bring at least 2 water bottles and my advice would be to stay on the beach, the trails get really humid and there's biting flies everywhere. The views are really cool though and you can walk all the way to North Carolina
Lauren Krupinski
I LOVE this place! One of my favorite state parks. The walk from the wildlife refuge to the park's visitor center took me about 1.5 hours. It is then a short walk to the beach, which is gorgeous. I was the only one on the beach at the time. I was so excited to find a starfish on the beach and put him back in deeper water. There were also lots of cute ghost crabs. I didn't encounter any bugs when I visited in early September.
Tammy Treichel
Take the tram tour! It's great! Wear a coat, hat, and gloves... it gets cold quickly.
andrei bogos
Beautiful park. But if you decide to visit, don't forget the bug spray, the bugs are hungry!
Lorraine Reynolds
As primitive as it gets! Back packed in, most along the beach, with a little detour onto the road due to protected land. Very quiet camping!
Ferdilyn Leary
We bike 9 miles back and forth but it was wortbit
Beautiful place and the beach was so clean and white sand
daniel jopp
Beautiful scenery, nice bike/hiking trails!
Daniel Morbitzer
Been on beaches up all over the country. I have never felt as remote as I did today. Camping would be challenging with a 5 mile hike, but that's what keeps it pristine. We'll be back and prepared next time!
Gwen Prescott
Very nice,, never seen a nicer facility for hikers, bicyclists, and canoes, kayaking etc.
C. Carl
Hiked in from gravel trail to visitor center, through camp sites , the amazing dunes to Barbour Hill on the Atlantic Beach. Truly magnificent, have never seen so many sandpipers together in one place. The visitor center is worth a stop with good short historical and other narratives. The landscape is so pure, birds, turtles, otters, an abundance of dragonflies. The first two miles are without a canopy, so prepare, hydrate, and enjoy the beauty of Mother nature.
Terri Newman
This beach is AWESOME!!!...then again it is the OBX...experience...this place in in the outer banks NC not VAB
Brian Tran
So well preserved. Beautiful park. Hardly anyone, especially in summer. Biking, hiking, kayaking and camping. Reasonable prices and easy to reserve. Saw bald eagles while doing a kayak tour. Very knowledgeable guide. Definitely a worth a return.
Polly Haze
What a fun experience for kids and adults too! Great experience and unique day we all enjoyed.
Bryan E
Rode bikes in here quite frequently to go to the beach. If you want a beach with almost no one around that is still fairly accessible, this is it. Once you get on the beach, usually walking 1/2-3/4 of a mile guarantees you some privacy with only an occasional passerbyer
Justin Hall
We made the bike ride through Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge to get here. It's roughly a 5 mile bike ride. Great scenery and only a handful of people at any time. The house flies were biting in the wooded areas, but were manageable with big spray. The oceanfront was gorgeous and nearly empty! Not something I'm used to being a local in Virginia Beach. Even with base access you can struggle to enjoy 100' of beach front to yourself. If you're up for the home or bike ride this park is a great day trip to be had.
Matt Morrill
Destination is worth the journey, but here are some tips to make the most of the experience if planning to camp overnight:
1. Highly recommend biking in rather than hiking. Most of the trail is flat paved/gravel road, making it not the most enjoyable hike. Walking along the beach trail when the tide is out is pretty nice however. You still need to walk along a paved road from the overnight parking area (why they don't allow overnight parking in the Back Bay lot is beyond me).
2. If you plan to camp on the beach, make sure the weather is great with no chance of rain. We went when it was cloudy with a 10-20% chance of rain, but found that the wind and drizzle on the beach prevented us from setting up camp there. The interior sites aren't too bad though.
Jeff Duszak
Beautiful park and we'll maintained. I tend to shy away from crowds so that puts False Cape at the top of my SP list given it's limited accessibility. Wonderful beach. Dare 8 call it pristine. Came across an endangered aquatic snake, need I say more? She'll picking was great too. The majority of my time there the only people I could see were those in my party.
Natasha B
Watch out for snakes! This place is huge. So many places to go. Went for a day and still haven't went around everywhere. Loved it! Definitely be back.
Kurt
Do not let your friends know what a great retreat this is, otherwise it will be overrun and ruined. Mild December weather with 40 mph headwinds on the 3.5 mile beach hike was unparalleled as it ripped my poncho apart. Great preparation to return to the Topsy turvy world.
Edgardo Abreu
Can't get enough of this park. Wife and I did our first bike ride through Back Bay Wildlife Refuge to False Cape State Park and it was fun! We saw an Otter scratching it's back in the middle of the path. Fun times!
Joel H
A beautiful place - enjoyed riding around but experienced challenges with some sandy trails making it extremely difficult to ride or even walk. It would have been very nice to have signs posting distances and type of terrain at trail intersections. (there were some maps posted but not terrain info that I recall) Biting flies were also an annoying problem in several sections of trail.
Victor Munoz
Made my way to the beach, really nice bike ride. Perfect in the spring and ending of summer ride.
Jessie Jessloveurlife Lowe
This is one of my favorite places to ride my bike! Although it takes some time(and lots of water) to get to the campsites, both Barbour Hill and the ones at the end, it's totally worth it! I'll be stoked when the West Dike opens back up...... it's a longer trail, but gorgeous!! And I want to thank the Park Rangers for preserving False Cape, you guys ROCK!!!🤩❤
Philip Cassel
What a gem! Pristine, unpopulated beaches. Lovely primitive campsites to enjoy your stay. Check this out for your next weekend adventure.
Kathy Brown
Took the 9 am tram ride to FCSP and was a wonderful way to experience the park, see birds, and more.
Nick Dombroski
A very beautiful connection of trails with lots of places to stop and overlook the water or other sites. Great for biking and hiking but bikers beware, about a couple miles of the trail coming from the North Carolina border is a lot of a soft sand that you will need to got off and push. These trails are avoidable though, and don't pose much of a problem to hikers. The trails are clearly marked with plenty of detailed markers on the way, and the visitor's center is a great place to stop, refill water, hit the bathroom, shop for snacks/supplies, or enjoy the AC. The rangers are extremely friendly and helpful.
Rick Handel
This is my favorite place for biking in the region. Counting the trip in from Back Bay, I usually do about 20 miles. Finding a spot on the Atlantic Ocean where you are literally the only person on the beach is amazing. It is just an incredibly beautiful and relaxing place.
Becky Klammer
Phenomenal!! Worth the journey it takes to get in and set up! We biked in and camped on the beach side. We had an amazing weekend!
Next time we will drop off our gear at the Back Bay Refuge day parking lot instead of starting out from Little Island Park. That will save your legs for the uphill ride in.
The campsite was great. Large, flat sandy surface to pitch the tent. There are picnic tables at the campsites so no need to pack in a table. There are sites marked on the beach for camping, but you've got to get to them through thick, soft sand.
We had the beach all to ourselves Friday evening and Saturday morning. Other campers eventually came out but it was hours of no one but once in a while the rangers would come by on patrol.
There are many rangers in this park, they patrol the areas frequently.
Bug spray is a must! Spray your clothes and head too. They will sting you through your clothes and swarm around your head if you don't.
The visitor center in the park does not have ice so think through that part well if you're packing in a cooler, etc. A friend suggested to us to freeze Gatorade bottles of water which will keep things cold and it will be part of our water supply.
The Back Bay side offered beautiful sunsets and was a short walk from our campsite. We saw deer, turtles, birds and fowl of several kind, dolphins, and a snake. It's a wild place, fun to explore, and we look forward to our next trip.
Faye Stone
A light set of not-too-difficult trails. Got to see wildlife and a lot of mushrooms, and the trails themselves are great for biking or inexperienced hikers. Trail from Virginia side leads down to North Carolina and a small gift shop. The hike is peaceful but not particularly rewarding visually; very well-maintained with respect to trash and clear trails.
Becky Horstman
We just love this park! Where else can you find great bike trails, nature, beautiful beaches and natural scenery ? This park also sit side-by-side with a National Park. If you enjoy the quiet beauty of nature you will love this park. There are restrooms at the 1st stop as you enter and several miles down you will find a ranger station. Restrooms are at both places. You can get drinks and buy souvenir items at the ranger station. All the way at the end there is a study center where community groups or teachers might gather to teach students about nature. It is not usually open but is at the farthest point.Be sure to take some water and bug spray just in case the flies are out.
Lynette C
The beach is gorgeous and you'll probably have it all to yourself. There's a reason for that though, since it's a half mile trek from the Welcome Center, and half of that is in sand already. Hard for bikes, but they are definitely recommended for the 4.5 mile trek to get there from Back Bay. Definitely worth it though if you're looking for some peace and quiet in nature 😊
Robert Cheung
Wonderful place for various activities, hiking, biking, kayaking, camping, fishing and wildlife watching. There is no vehicle access to park. You get there by hiking, biking or boating. We were there on a May Tuesday and saw maybe ten other people within the park.
Christy Mahon
If you like secluded spaces, this is for you. I recommend leaving your bike somewhere when the paths get sandy. It's about 2 miles of pushing your bike through sand until you get to the beach at the NC border. I wound up with heat exhaustion after doing the entire trip from Back Bay parking lot to NC and it was only about 78°.
Jason
Definitely recommend the night hike. You get to look at False Cape In a whole different way.
April Owens
Excellent place to enjoy nature totally unplugged! Bike or walk in.
Matt Carroll
Wonderful park, the trails are maintained very well. I recommend it for anyone that likes cycling and/or hiking. I can't wait to go back, my only gripe is that I live so far away but that's not the parks fault! I had an enjoyable experience to say the least and recommend it to anyone who loves the outdoors.
sbby77 s
I love it here. There's a place along the trail that smells so amazing, just after you turn off at Barbour Hill to go deeper into the park. It's the first or second curve on false cape interior trail where its sandy and covered in pine straw, I can't explain it but if I could capture it I would. Not much cell service, there's a spot at a lookout point where you have water on either side of you before you get to the 2nd campsite area. Also, take cash and buy some ☆no bite me☆ from the visitor center, it's amazing (you can buy it in advance from amazon). The flies can eat you alive and make it miserable to be there, so just prepare. It's a must for camping. I must say too, the park rangers here are wonderful people. They saw my suffering one day, doused me in calamine lotion, no bite me, and deep woods off. They also rescued me out of the park to safety from a summer storm/tornado 2 years ago. Definitely watch the weather, it's wide open out there and things can change quickly!
Michael Wilson
One of the best places in VA for solitude and primitive camping... you can walk, bike or paddle in for one of only 12 camp sites. The pure nature and peace are well worth the effort! The visitor center is excellent and can provide a brief break from the heat. Most of the time, you can look to the horizon on the beach and not see another person.
Miriam Phillips
Beautiful bike ride from Back Bay. Nice visitor center w amenities, souvenir shop, helpful rangers. Exquisite beach w no one around!
Nick Benipayo
This is a great place to visit for hikers. The walk along the beach is rather long, but it is worth it, and keeps most of the idiots away. Depending on the time of year, bug spray is not optional, as the biting flies will swarm you.
Holly Steverson
Park was great, the campsite on the beach was amazing.
cc
Went camping on the beach front with my husband and two kids. The bike ride into the park is beautiful and the seclusion on the ocean is so meditative. Great visitors center with snacks and A\C. Totally worth it.
Joel Derby
Great place for a flat bike ride. Easily bikeable on the west ditch trail down to the false cape visitor center and a bit farther down into false cape. At lower tides the beach is also bikeable. The trail that goes all the way to North Carolina is quite sandy for biking, but manageable if you're willing to walk a bit. Highly recommended for a secluded beach day/wetland/wooded excursion getaway from vb.
Koren Rivera
A very peaceful and quiet place.
Jacob Helmka
Very secluded. Hike, bike, or boat are the only ways into the park. Staff and facilities are outstanding. I have bike and hike camped here. Mosquito repellent is a Must for group sites! If you're prepared then you will have a good time.
Joseph Hammer
This little peace of heaven in Virginia Beach is amazing! What a wonderful place to visit! We stayed for a few days here and it was so peaceful and beautiful! I lived here in Virginia Beach my whole life and have never experienced this place until a few weeks ago. Wow, talking about missing out for sure! I definitely recommend anyone to visit! Love Virginia Parks! :) Only thing is bring bug spray, for certain times of the year! :) Have fun! :)
Korby Catttell
Wonderful! We biked to the old village and saw the old cemetery. Then biked back along the beach. It's so beautiful and solitary. The rangers are so helpful and friendly. Watch out for the deer flies though, they are relentless.
Danny
I used to bike here all the time, great trails and if you get deep enough you can find a secluded beach all to yourself to cool off after a long ride. It is possible to make it all the way to the NC border but you will have to walk your bike in parts due to the sand.
skiwest 01
Beautiful and well kept area. a lot of wildlife. We were biking there on gravel road, about 20 miles round trip.
A Robbins
A picture perfect getaway for those who want to escape the crowds and enjoy a serene, natural beach scene with breathtaking trails throughout. Don't be afraid to pitch a tent on the gorgeous beach side camp sites underneath tangled trees.
Laura bain
Loved the camp site. Liked that you could hike or kayak in to camp site. Wish we had time to hike to the grave yard and shipwreck. Next time we will stay more than a day
Mark
Really enjoyed my experience there. Off grid tent camping on the beach was a blast. However it is 6 miles on foot or by bike from the parking lot.
Elizabeth Russell
On the Sunday Winter Tram Tour, about 25 companions join you on each tram. It cost about $8 and has narrations during the 1-mile hike and the entire tram voyage to within 2 miles of the NC border. I had a brother-in-law and he was snapping amazing photos of ducks, geese and other Winter wildlife. We saw dozens of Tundra swans, an eagle, a deer, turtles, coots, buffleheads, and more. We were wrapped in cozy blankets as the beautiful sunset appeared over Back Bay. It was an amazing journey of almost 4 hours with some photo stops, a 1-mile hike thru Spanish Moss, gnarly live oaks, tall loblolly pines, and the broad water impounds of the BBNWR. Some guests elected to walk back to the parking area along the beach. Will they see sea turtles, whales, dolphins and shorebirds?
Rodney Giese
From Sandbridge Virginia you have the option of hiking in (about 6 miles), riding a bike in (fat tires recommended for the gravel road) or finding a time when the shuttle is running. The 6 miles is largely thru back bay wildlife refuge. Both back bay and false cape state park have abundant wildlife. Great birding, lots of turtles and the occasional snake. During the summer months and early fall insect repellent is a must as the marshy area supports a lot of may flies and mosquitos. The area in general is a left to flourish is a very natural state. Once you make it to the beaches in the state park you will largely have the beach to yourself (well... along with the shore birds and dolphins)
Rick Kerr
Biked several miles of trails - fantastic water views, plants, birds, etc. along the way. Park staff were very friendly and informative (add passionate about the treasures). Will do again!
John Throckmorton
Had a blast on the tram. Chip was a great guide!
Karen Toth
Somewhat challenging to access but totally worth the effort. An interesting variety of landscapes and historical artifacts. Also, when they say the southernmost part of the trail to reach NC is sandy and challenging, they mean it!
C Douglas Edwards
totally eerie...at times. we were the only people on the beach as far to the north and to the south as you could see. saw some dolphins, and maybe only one personal boat in the far distance. the 3/4 mile walk is crazy as you have to fight off the swarming atttacking, apparently starving mosquitos. but it was worth the trip. want to go back, but bring more people.
Charla Perkins
Clean bathrooms, nice little charcoal grill. Playground is small, but nice for toddler to preschool, or maybe even early elementary age kids. Great pavilion for a picnic.
Mike Sawchuk
Improved camping sites! Wake up by the beach.
Vincent Verweij
Probably one of my favorite state parks in Virginia. What a delight to hike in, camp under the live oaks, walk the beach, and enjoy the amazing wildlife around. The staff are absolutely fantastic, too!
Jim Gerber
We took a 4 hour tour which was great because of the tour guide who was extremely knowledgeable. The beach at the park is pristine. The park personnel are knowledgeable and helpful. We'll be back.
thomas wilson
A great mountain bike ride. Miles of dirt road suitable for family outings For a serious workout the sand gets really soft and deep down towards the North Carolina border.
Susan Sease
Fabulous to hike, bike and enjoy quiet nature!
Stanley Bizub
Great winter tram tour in conjunction with back bay national wildlife refuge. Saw many of the migrating birds, racoon, turtle, and deer! Highly recommend

Don't go here. I don't want to have to fight with you for reservations so please, go elsewhere.
This park is phenomenal. The camping, the wildlife, the scenery, the rangers/staff, and everything in between. If you want to get away from it all, this is your spot.
Richard Cox
Always a breathtaking beautiful place to visit

Here at the environmental center w/ 22 high school students. The rangers have been great. Learned about edibles in the wild and had our wild salad and sassafras tea with dinner. Yum!

Halfway decent waves. A little on the crowded side but pretty clean. As long as I've been going out to Sandbridge I have always stopped at the first parking area. For me this was a nice surprise.

Hidden beach open to the public but feels very private. Look up the tram hours, you get a wonderful tour for just $8.
Melissa Marquardt
It's well worth the $5 admission to Back Bay Refuge and the long walk to the state park. Bring a bike or prepare for a hike.
