Reviews of West Tyson County Park
Great walking trail, mostly level ground with a few minor obstacles like crossing a creek on a log, a few slippery creek banks and some occasional rocky areas that are slick. Bikes allowed but never see them there. Trail follows along the rivers edge all the way to the west edge of Castlewood trail and rock beach (1.5 mile) or circle back and follow signs to the left (1 mile) to go through the huge wild grass meadow (.5 mile) near the train tracks to the parking area.
Great place to hike. Well maintained.
Easy to find from I-44. Great thick canopy coverage rendering shady picnic areas. Bring insect repellant if going thru trails. Dirt trails 0.5 and up to 7 miles one-way. Great for hiking, biking, trail jogging, and horseback riding. Trails can incline up to 20 degrees in dirt, rocky and slate chip paths. Trekking poles recommended to help navigate uneven ground. Restrooms available. Not recommended for mobility-challenged.
Excellent trail with varying levels of difficulty and environments ranging from riverside to swamp to field to steep climbs. Lots of wildlife. Lightly trafficked. Pet friendly.
It was my first time visiting this park. It’s beautiful . I would go next year that’s for sure. Here are some photos I took.
Very peaceful place. Good for hiking, maybe for mountain biking. However, small parking.
Very cool Park within drivable distance from St Louis. Has nice hiking trails where you can find fossils and had good picknic sites.
I love coming to West Tyson for hikes with my dog! The trails are nice and easy, some picturesque views, easy to park even when the parking lot is full, bathroom always clean and we'll maintained.
Best 3-4 mile hiking trail you can find near St. Louis.
Nice hike. It’s a long trail. We’ll be back to do the whole thing when we have more time.
Great hike! Definitely going to sweat on this one. Great for the whole family.
Had fun relaxing in the creek. Very clean although you can tell it’s recently flooded and was muddy/sandy in places.
I had a great hike on the Flint Quarry trail. Lovely views, plenty of climbs and good rest points. The roads are narrow in and out, so watch out for traffic.
Went on a beautiful hike to break up an 8 hr. drive! Highly recommended.
I want to rate this 1 star to keep people away, but it's easily my favorite place to hike in the immediate STL area
Beautiful park. Some steep trails and rocky footing but incredible views.
There are various trails, most which are moderate plus in difficulty due to steep grades and rocks. Take your time and many can enjoy the area.
Great park with lots of uphill trails. Little more on the rugged side, not paved but rocks/trails make it fun.
Beautiful hiking trails. Very peaceful.
This is one of my favorite places to hike. No matter the time of year, this park is extremely gorgeous.
The trails are extremely long, and thus I have never completed one. There are a few areas that was tough to walk / hike.
A lot of cyclers consider this one of the hardest trails in the St Louis area to ride on.
There are few spots good for photography.
The parking lots are not the biggest, and this Parking can be tough on the weekends.
The lower half has some campground, a bathroom, and showers.
They allow horses on the trails, but I have never seen them. I do not think I would take one on this trail.
Absolutely love this park! Has some great hiking trails. The trails are not too easy and not too hard. Perfect for Goldilocks they are right in the middle!
My husband and I went hiking here the other day and had the best time! This is definitely one of our favorites now! It's 1.5 miles to the loop and the loop itself is about 1.5 miles. There weren't any look-outs - you're mostly surrounded by trees the entire time. The path is narrow (which I kind of enjoy!) and frequently over slabs of rock. Large portions are flat, but with the occasional incline (nothing too steep).
This is a great park, where the natural beauty has been well preserved. There are several trails, of various lengths, to hike, and it has a nice reservable picnic pavilion, as well as other picnic areas scattered throughout the park. It's a great place to get away from it all, and relax.
A nice trail, albeit a bit muddy at the start on end of the trail the day I walked it last. Limited cell phone contact. I forgot to download the map and couldn't when I was in the park. During the walk, I passed through several microclimates including snow covered trees, some falling ice as the wind passed through the trees. Look forward to walking it again.
The trails are excellent for hiking and biking. They are slightly technical and steep which gives the challenge that is hard to find in Missouri. All the trails connect to to the trails of the surrounding parks such as Lone Elk. Weather plays a large part in the conditions of the park. A heavy rain will make the trails very wet and slick, so be weary hitting it hard in the spring months.
The parking is small, so it can become slightly crowded in the warmer months. The trail heads can be hard to determine which is which, but they provide maps which eliminates all confusion.
Chub Trail is great — 12.1 Miles with a decent elevation gain! Dog was about half dead though!!
This park has some really pretty views of hills and the river. It is also has great trails for hiking and mountain biking. Some portions of the trails get pretty narrow so you have to be careful of the bike traffic.
I walked the Chubb Trail loop. The loop consists of the Chubb Trail, Flint Quarry Trail, and then the connector trail. Chubb trail can go all the way to Lone Elk Park, but that is a one way, 7-mile hike.
West Tyson Park trails are well marked and it was easy to make my way back. While I always bring a map, I wouldnt worry too much about going the wrong way. It's more likely you will cut over to the other trails too soon rather than too late; shortening your overall hike.
I hiked in early April. There were all sorts of spring flowers to see. I only ran into a few people and noticed the trail is used by mountain bikers.
The trail itself is very rocky. I recommend good soled shoes with thick socks, especially if you are new to hiking or are tender-footed.
This park is such an awesome hidden gem! I almost hate to review it. It's beautiful and uncrowded. Hikes for any level and length. Dog friendly and every dog owner was respectful!
Probably the most beautiful park in St. Louis County. There are several criss-crossing trails that take you throughout the wooded hills, deep valleys and along the river. It’s a great place to get intentionally lost in nature.
No running water and only 1 primitive outhouse. But if u are there during normal hours you can always visit the route 66 museum across the road. Anyway, the park itself is great. Super great trails for hiking and tought mountain biking. If you can ride these trails without stepping off and with confidence you are in good shape. Like someone else said there are no overlooks technically speaking but you can find one or two if you do some real hiking. From the river just east of the "field" head north across the rr tracks and start clamoring your way up the hills. At the top you will see old foundations from who knows what old building as well as a nice view. If you happen upon the place i am thinking of and you are young enough you will find a natural slide which is a steep chute cut out between two cliffs and descends maybe 10 feets with loose soil and leaves. I stumbled down it once and it was a blast. Generally hiking off the beaten path is a lot of fun here up in those hills. Not sure of the legality of that? But it is a public park so idk.
Awesome hikes, good workout with a lot of elevation change. Deer, chipmunks, plenty of other critters too may cross your path. Also an awesome park for geocaching, lots of adventurous hides out here!
A good variety of hiking options. From a .8 mile all the way up to a 7 mile. With several in between. A bit rugged but gorgeous wooded trails.
Great place to hike. A lot of trails.
The trails are a great escape from the city. So expansive that you don’t really run into too many people.
This is a very lovely and clean park. I did the Flint Quarry Trail and it was really clean and well-maintained, though a bit muddy from the recent rain. I like that the park provides paper maps near the entrance.
You can see my detail review of flint quarry trail as they are the same location. But in short great advanced Mountain biking and hiking. Bathrooms available and plenty of parking.
Went geocaching at the park and had a blast. I can't wait to go back.
Great access point to trails for biking and hiking, bathrooms!, and some camping. Overall a cool spot!
very pretty little place but it didn't appear to have any camping available.
I love hiking here. The trails are decently maintained and there are options for all difficulty levels.
Park has narrow two-way road leading to the trailheads, but the trails are great to hike on and maps accurately show all trails.
Chubb trail is an awesome beast. Make sure you have flat repair and dont stop until you get to the stairway.
Love this park! Well kept trails, thanks to an organization that goes by the name of gateway off-road cyclist. Friendly people on the trail!
Beautiful park with a bunch of trail access and acres to sitting areas with picnic benches, grills, and fire pits.
Very nice hiking experience, I did the Chubb Trail ,very interesting met other hikers, bikers and runners.
Nice, secluded hiking area. Chubb trailhead. Trail connects with Castlewood and Lone Elk Parks.
Great place for trail running, but be careful you will twist your ankles. Its slick so watch your steps and lookout for snakes
Pokemon Go players: This is a Dratini nest. I caught easily 4-5 here while only being here for around 30 mins! Pretty views and atmosphere as well!
Beautiful spot to hike! Others on the trail as well biking, running, walking.
A quaint little park. Several trailheads here. Nice picnic areas too
First time there beautiful park.
Very nice hiking trails, specially the upper part of the trail
