Reviews of Fort Williams Park
Rommel Lagmay
It was much more beautiful in person than it was my dreams! Literally took my breath away. It was stunning! It wasn’t so crowded when I visited it October of 2021 maybe due to pandemic and I liked it that way. I could take pictures without having to worry about the crowd.
There were lots of parking slots and toilet cubicles (though not so clean).
mani agg
If you really want to be mesmerized by nature, this is the place to go, please go and spend a day because this park is just absolutely beautiful and amazing! Very well maintained and beautiful location, plenty of parking and lots of seating and at the end of the park they have dog area where they can be without leash! We walked more than 15k steps and I think it was not enough!
Joy Alvarez
Absolutely beautiful grounds with the Portland headlight lighthouse, center, plenty of cliffs that you can walk out to enjoy the view, a beach area, Some ruins, and a lot of grassy areas areas where you can enjoy a picnic or leisure with the family. Plenty of parking and pet friendly. This is something you need to be sure to see if you're in the area.
David Packer
Absolutely stunning! A must see! Hard to describe in words. Definitely make this part of your trip while in the Portland area. You won’t be disappointed! Plenty to see and do even if the weather is subpar! Check it out!
G. Taymore
This place is a gem! Awesome children's garden with fun things to explore (tunnels, climb trees & crazy slide). The playground was also a hit. The main attraction is the lighthouse. Great views. Plenty of picnic tables for lunch or you can find a place on the lawn. Free parking if you don't mind walking from overflow lot.
Lauren Woodworth
Such a beautiful place to spend time by the ocean. The forts are cool and fun to explore. Portland Head Light is one of the best lighthouses in the state and is a must see! Highly recommended stop if you are in Portland for the day
Aditya Narayanan
The best attraction in the Portland area. The views of Portland Head Light over the crashing waves are priceless. The park is expansive and has plenty of parking. There are also many trails, including the Cliff Walk, which you can enjoy.
Brandon Blankenship
Very beautiful place. I was in awe for the first time having never been to Maine or New England in general. I came back three times before leaving the area. Make sure to check everything out the park has to offer, not just the light house. Definitely get some lobster rolls and look at the view!
Ben Roth
Picturesque park situated on the rocky coastline of Maine with the ruins of an old fort scattered throughout, featuring one of the world’s most iconic lighthouses. While Portland Head Light is what brings in all the visitors, this park would honestly be pretty cool without it. Anywhere along the Maine coast is beautiful, but this stretch is particularly breathtaking. There are also a few open fields, some lightly wooded areas, a plethora of trails, a good selection of food trucks, and even a (somewhat) sandy beach. It’s not the biggest park, but it combines many of the coolest aspects of Maine: the rocky coast, beautiful views of the ocean, a bit of history, and (of course) a magnificent lighthouse.

Great spot to see the water as well as the lighthouse. Best part for us was being able to climb down on the rocks near the water to get very close to the water. Great pictures and really beautiful to look at.
We didn't go to any of the other lighthouse spots so can't compare them, but everything was great about this place.
Magic Fairy
Always a beautiful place to visit and spend a day! Great place for kids. Very clean as well and dog friendly. Been coming here for years. Bring picnic, waters and T paper for outhouses. View is always spectacular!
Karen Morales
Very beautiful grounds. The gardens are well kept and the abundance of wild flowers give it a great touch. We went on a day that was overcast and still we took plenty of beautiful pictures. The trails we're also very nice.
Paleofan
Lighthouse is part of the park system and surrounded by beautiful cultivated grounds and more wild , craggy surrounds. There is actually another view point at the lighthouse where you can see another lighthouse nearby .
The one thing I do not like is that there are no restrooms- just some rather horrifying portable restrooms. There is plenty of parking, however. If you have some mobility impaired family, it could be a challenge.
Chuck Phillips
When in Portland on business, this is my favorite place to come and sit. Enjoy lunch. Take him to scenery, enjoy the lighthouse. Any time of year.
William Martin
Beautiful mixture of beaches and old buildings. This is a rewarding family outing with many small marvels with setting.
Elizabeth Thompson
Absolutely beautiful views, great places to explore, and a delicious food truck. Highly recommend checking it out.
Heike Grabow
This is such a cool place. Just beautiful. Love the lighthouse and rocky coast line. Great place to take pictures!

October 2022
This was our first stop when departing the airport. Late October, Wednesday afternoon - store and museum were closed. Got some great pictures of the lighthouse but did not walk around a great deal.
Had to pay for parking
Quite a few tour buses
Several Food Trucks
Great stop

Absolutely beautiful views. There weren’t too many crowds, so you could walk comfortably through the park. The park is also very well maintained. I look forward to seeing the upcoming projects they have planned for the park. Don’t miss the lighthouse!!
Wayne Walk Jr
Nice park to visit. Starts getting pretty crowded around noon. Enjoyed seeing all the old structures and batteries then visiting the lighthouse. Parking fees were reasonable.
Abhishek Prabhu
This place took our breath away. Even on a cloudy and stormy evening the sight of this picturesque place is mesmerizing. Don't forget to pay for parking which now starts at $5 for 2 hours. Must visit when in Portland.
Natalie Kinney
One of the most relaxing places I have been. Climbing the rocks and sitting near the water was amazing. Seeing all the wild life was another plus! Very beautiful place to take a breather.

Jenna Smith
Absolutely gorgeous!!! Easy to park and pay. Wish we would have had more time here.
Steve Hefner
This was worth the time to visit. Beautiful views, and the lighthouse is very picturesque.
Jody Diou
I love Fort Williams. Great Cousin's Maine Lobster food truck, Best to read the menu CAREFULLY!! All I saw was Maine roll and Connecticut Roll and assumed that the ME was lobster and CT was Crab!! I enjoyed my cold lobster roll with mayo, but would have loved!! LOVED warm lobster with butter!!! Oh, I'll just have to come back and get myself a Connecticut Roll!!
Adam Rucks
Very nice park. There was a lot of open space, but also trees and shaded area. The trails were well kept. There was a good food truck (that seems permanent) that Steve very good lobster rolls. We never made it to the kids play areas since our kids had more than enough fun playing on the rocks by the shore. The lighthouse was picturesque but access was not allowed. The main drawback was that all the bathrooms we saw around the park were port o pots. Overall, a beautiful park.
aj
Amazing views of rocky shores of Maine. No entrance fee, but there is a parking fee of $2.00 per hour. The minimum time that can be purchased is 2 hours, so it is 4 bucks minimum to park there. We'll worth it.
K P
Wow! There's a reason this is an iconic US view. If you are in the area, you should make time for a stop. Beautiful!
Mike Hagans
Beautiful park with lots of exploring, walking & beautiful ocean views plus off leash friendly areas.
Tarun Yadav
Beautiful. Breathtakingly beautiful. A must visit if you are in Portland, Maine.
(One suggestion- a couple of Trash cans (in Car park perhaps) would be useful)
Matt Chambers
Loved it. Loads of history, great paths, good trucks, lighthouse. Pay for parking sucks but..... oh well
Nathaniel Davis
Can’t go wrong showing all your flat-lander friends the most iconic landmark in the state of Maine. Well kept park open year round.
Frank Ditore
Nice park. Very large with lots of open space. Visited on a beautiful September Saturday afternoon and the park was packed! Lighthouse makes for a nice photo opp and the old fort infrastructure is interesting. Of course the views out to the Atlantic are wonderful.
Nico Samneil Salado
A beautiful park that faces the atlantic. Maintained by the people of cape elizabeth. Ample parking space. A good place for the family to have picnic. Limited options of food stall though.
Matty Thrash
Beautiful park, great place to bring the family. It's a nice place for a decent walk with the kids. There's old ruins there of a time long forgotten. Great for pictures if you are a photographer. From the shore you can see 2 different lighthouses and the scenery is spectacular to say the least. If you are planning to head to Portland be sure to put this on your list of places to stop. Definitely will be back with my family again in the future!
Gracie Woolson
Absolutely beautiful! If you like walks, water, or lighthouses, I recommend.
Quira Gangi
Too cold to walk around when we went, but would like to go back during spring or summer to check out the trails.
Nichole James
The whole park is amazing. Definently worth going too.
Moving Forward Adventures
Loved walking around and taking in all of the views. We spent about 3 hours here walking on their trails and enjoying the views of the water and the light house. Pack a lunch because there are some great picnic spots.
Zachary DeBoer
Yet another amazing park in Portland. I am running out of things to say about the fantastic public spaces in Maine. You could easily spend several hours and probably even a whole day here. We only did a whirlwind tour but it was still worth checking out even if you only have 30-60 minutes. There seemed like a lot of things to do here, but being such a lovely park in a super-scenic location was enough to get a 5-star rating!
Colby DeLapp
I love this place so much. We go there every year and every time I discover something new and exciting. I love the garden and the beach and the lighthouse and the fort and the castle in the woods and the friendly atmosphere and everything about the place. It is a perfect place to fly a kite as well. I love the place a lot. So many good memories and family photos we have taken there. I anticipate going there every year!
Benny Fish
Beautiful scenery and lighthouse! We had a wedding party, and they were quite happy with the venue that we had reserved. We were somewhat rushed by the grounds keeper though, who asked us if we could leave before our reservation time ended because of another reservation. We stayed until the end of our allotted time and there were no problems. Although his attitude lost the park a star rating from me
Dorit Slotow
This place is absolutely stunning. A great spot to visit during CoVid as there is plenty of space to socially distance while enjoying the beautiful scenery and the path along the cliff. There were a few people who weren't wearing masks but that is definitely not the establishments fault. The views of the ocean and lighthouse are absolutely breathtaking and there is even a spot open where you can climb down the rocks and get closer to the ocean. We parked at a seperate gate where my GPS had guided me and the parking was actually free, however there were only about 5 spots in total there. Overall I highly recommend stopping by if you are in the Portland area. It's a great place for a day trip.
Dr. Beverly Vendryes, Ph.D.
Visited the lighthouse which is situated on the specular shores of Fort Williams Park in Portland, ME while I was on my New England States road trip in early October, 2022. The view was absolutely beautiful and you'll noticed additional lighthouse towers visual at a distance. Also, you will be captivated by the sounds of the choppy waves crashing in unison over the unusual formation of rocks. There are several walking paths and the cliff walk offers spectacular views. I could stay there all day but it was raining.
Rebecca Steinberg
Beautiful scenic views with tons to do. Fort adventures, dog friendly off leash area, picnic tables perfect for get together's, tennis courts, designated pickleball courts, soccer field, amphitheater, and of course the iconic Portland headlight. Food trucks and artists can be found as well.
Eric Jubeck
Maybe our favorite lighthouse in the northeast with a great lobster roll food truck!
Peter Sanchez
A little out of the way but a worthy stop for the most scenic lighthouse views
bryan rooth
Fort williams park has so many things to see with a beautiful light house. We've tried to see alot of these and everything we are amazed at how beautiful they are. The park and grounds are well kept and everything is easy to access. They even have food trucks on site in case you get hungry. If your able to there's a small gate that leads to the rocky shore. You can climb down the rocks to the water and enjoy a different view of the light house. Next time I'll see if the food trucks have pizza or onion rings.
GrayBeard (Chris)
Took pictures of stacked rocks. Some of them are amazing.
Dimitri Olivier
Perfect weather when we went. The wife and I loved the scenery. Great place to take pictures and walk and enjoy the day.
T. J. Hart
Beautiful park. Plenty of portable bathrooms to use. Food trucks and some art stands set up even after the lighthouse closes. Free entry but have to pay a few bucks to park.
N M
This is one of our favorite parks in the area. The view is gorgeous and even though it can get pretty crowded in the areas by the water and lighthouse, it’s large enough to still get a quiet walk in over by the tennis courts. We brought an out of state relative here and they kept expressing that it was the most well kept and beautiful lighthouse that they had seen. It is definitely worth stopping by this park.
Eric Lee
The sunset and sunrise are both pretty good. Gate will be open about 10-15 mins before the announced time. I travelled from Washington DC and it's worth visiting here.
Lauren DeIudicibus
Beautiful place to take a walk and have lunch. I suggest walking the cliff side trail that follows the shore line. It is very scenic with amazing views of head light!
Also along the trails there are multiple batteries, bunkers and an old mansion dating back to WW2.
We visited during COVID. Picnic tables are available at 6 feet apart. Portable toilets are available.
You also need to pay for parking which is by the hour and is cheap.
anisap625
This place is so picturesque and calm. So many good photo opportunities around every corner. Lots of picnic areas are available but restrooms are sparse or hard to get to.
Parét Yoga
Great spot with fields to play in, trees and old forts to explore. Good for group play or a solo run/ obstacle course. Beautiful view of the ocean along the cliffs.
Andy Novikov
We stopped at Fort Williams Park to view one of the most photographed lighthouse in the US Portland Head Light. The weather was perfect. We have enjoyed walking around the lighthouse, seeing the different views of the ocean and taking some photos. Lots of photo opportunities! The park is fantastic, good maintenance. Well worth the visit.
Jake B
This is a very beautiful park any time of year. Today was a gray day with melting snow, but the rocks and trees and the light all looked beautiful. The air was crisp and briny. The cliff trail was very muddy, but passable, and the views as spectacular as can be. It's truly a magical place when it's uncrowded and peaceful.
Jessica Simpson
One of the most beautiful places you can visit! If you wear shoes for walking, be sure to go on the Cliff Walk. The views change as you proceed and on a clear day they are breathtaking. Also, it's always colder and windier here, so take an extra layer, especially in the shoulder seasons.
If you have children, or even if you don't, be sure to visit the Children's Garden. Thousands of perennials were planted and in summer and fall, it's spectacular. It has a frog pond with stepping stones, bridges, waterfalls, water pump, tree house, bear caves etc.
Remember that this park is carry in/carry out! No trash cans and only port-a-potty's, so plan accordingly!
Much of the flower beds and landscaping is maintained by volunteers with Friends of Ft Williams, a non-profit foundation. Check out their website for beautiful pictures and to make a donation. Enjoy your visit.
Jason J Miller
Amazing views with much to explore and really nice walking paths... most with a gorgeous view and plenty of open and secluded spots to sit and enjoy the view or reflect.
Crowd seemed generally friendly and respectful where if you found a place to sit or pause for a views no one was breathing down your neck waiting for you to move and kept a peaceful, respectful distance.
You can enjoy a short walk or stay for hours and find places to sit or picnic and hang out. A few safer areas where you can climb down towards the water on some rocky beds that are fun to explore and of course contribute your rock stacking talent to the various piles all over. But please always be respectful by not throwing the rocks or knocking other rock piles down.. only one with authority to do that is mother nature!
Word of caution .. there are no boundaries, kids can walk right up to ledges that are, to say the least on returnable from. Part of the sheer beauty of the park is that it is in it's natural unencumbered state. Respect is healthy and there are so many safe places for kids to run, jump and climb.
Wonderful place.
Daniel Gomez
Great little drive outside the city , great scenic views , great place to bring the kids to the small coved beach ! Whether you want to walk around or hang out in the sun or just see something new in Maine this is a great place ! I usually go a couple times a year just to get away and enjoy a walk with some good views !!
Chris Pine
This is a wonderful place to explore, view the ocean, see not one but two lighthouses, picnic, walk, bring kids, and take photos. There are a lot of pathways to different rocky areas with direct contact with the ocean, but be advised that some are not easy to access and can be dangerous. Not all of the paths are accessible to those with walking/mobility aids, but a good sum of the park has paved walking areas. Also, some areas of the fort/house are blocked off with fencing, but that doesn’t ruin the experience.
Logan
Fort Williams Park is such a beautiful area on a Casco Bay. Seeing the Portland Head Light in person was such a great moment and you will take some of the most beautiful photos at the Fort Williams Park area. We plan to go back for their annual Cape Elizabeth Garden Tour just so we can have more beautiful photos of the area to cherish forever. Please be respectful of others and pick up your trash. This area is too beautiful to ever leave litter behind.
Robert Davies
Beautiful rocky coastal views are coupled with historic decay (ruins of a fort having water away), and a majestic light house. This park is dog friendly, including an off leash area. A number of food trucks are located around. These prices are gougingly expensive. Like $2 for a 12 oz soda expensive.
All in all, this is an awesome park with beautiful views, friendly people and although expensive, delicious food.
Bev Stevens
Clean and well maintained gardens! Beautiful walking areas. There are several parking areas so you have a variety of locations to wander. There are several that are not maintained during the winter so pay attention to signs and barriers. Also the walking paths are not fully maintained all winter either. There are still a lot of locations to walk around just wear appropriate clothing and foot wear and be careful. The lighthouse itself is fully taken care of year round and there are a few spots to park close to it. If the spots are all taken park further away, enjoy the view and then check back because most don't stay long and parking rotates quickly.
Brandon Hepler
An absolutely amazing experience. The views. The sound of the oceans. Old military structures to explore. An abandoned mansion. A head light. It's free right now but potentially pay to park if you're not from Cape Elizabeth. If you have a dog, they'll love this park too.
Peter Gailitis
This is a beautiful and scenic park. You do have to pay for parking now as of July 2019, but you won't be disappointed. Currently there are 4 food trucks in the park if you are hungry. Two of them sell lobster rolls, one sells gelato and the other crepes. Absorb the view, watch the boats go in and out of Portland Harbor.
George Selby
Very interesting small town park with lots of things to do and see. Open fields, a protected beach, picnic areas, shoreline rocks you can climb on, a magnificent lighthouse, old abandoned defense fortifications and a spooky mansion. I thoroughly enjoyed an afternoon here.
Dalton Randall
Beautiful place to visit. A small beach to set eyes upon, and water that's salty and refreshing on a hot summers day. Walking trails along the ocean and old bunkers still visible. An old lighthouse still stands and is one of many along Maine's vast and coast.
Doctor Benway
My favorite place to visit in Maine.
It's a ex military base that has been turned into a beautiful park. It's free and there is nothing else quite like it. Beautiful lighthouse, small museum/information center and gift shop. Lots of trails right on the ocean cliffs, large grassy areas with benches, areas to have cook outs, fly kites, play frisbee, snow sledding etc. Bring the whole famy and dogs. The views are breathtaking.
Mark LoGiurato
Great park to enjoy the views, picnic, hike, and visit the lighthouse. It is well kept with few services. The food trucks offer amazing lobster rolls and gelato. They have a trolley that will take you around the park. Plenty of parking - free admission.
Bonnie Szturma
We went to this park & met friends from the local area. It was beautiful. It was open, clean & people were friendly.
People were hiking, taking lots of pictures, playing on the expansive lawns. I would definitely put this on your must do list if you’re in the area.
Johnathan Emery
Fort Williams is a park that is maintained by the citizens of Cape Elizabeth. Here you'll find the most Iconic of Maine Landmarks, the Portland Headlight. This park is well maintained and even at peak hours in the summer, it shouldn't feel overwhelmingly crowded. As a local this is my main choice for a place to take a walk, and I'd suggest the Cliff Walk (a mile long) to anyone who doesn't mind a couple steep inclines.
Lyn Rowden
One of my favorite parks. It is huge and has everything from a small swimming beach to rugged rocky shore, the gorgeous Portland Head Light to old forts, lovely picnic grounds and easy walking trails. Great for flying kites, sunbathing, playing with kids, group events. Dog friendly! And its free! Even beautiful in the winter.
Matthew D
Very clean and maintained park. Lots of history to read. Multiple batteries, a lighthouse and places to sit and enjoy the view. There are also locations to bbq, note for my next time back. Such a beautiful place, picturesque with the right timing. A must if you are in the area.
Zac Cornish
What a great place to explore, this park has attractions for all ages. From an easy sea side walking trail, old structures to walk through, to rocky sea side you won't be bored. I came with three children 6 through 10 and they had a blast, had to force them to leave.
Five stars even though there is a lesson to teach with Fort Williams, the tragedy of the commons. There is no fee to enter this park, and therefore it suffers from the ravages of time and disrespectful people that have graffitied one of the fort's casemates. I hope you'll leave a donation like we did!
Diane Carrion
What a beautiful park. Much history to read and beautiful walking paths. Or take a dip in the water!
Yael W
Perhaps one of our favorite days in Maine. Fort Williams Park is a must visit. You can spend a few hours walking by the forts, the old mansion and enjoying the vista by Portland Head Light. Its a must see and a perfect day to spend outside!
Tamara Rivera Colón
Nice place for families and couples alike. Good paths for walking and bike riding. Dog friendly. Big open areas where you can toss a ball around and tenis courts. Picnic areas have tables and grills. Beautiful pollinator garden.
yeshads
An unplanned visit prooved a fantastic outing. The old light house and surrounding areas are beautiful and worth a visit. On the way the fall colours were breathtaking experience.
Lee Harrop
Great views all over this wonderful Park. This is a real gem and some great photos of the lighthouse and Atlantic Ocean.
Rick Browne
One of my all-time favorite places! Depending on the day and the season, you could be treated to a schooner sailing by on a lazy summer afternoon, pounding surf from huge swells during an Atlantic hurricane or whiteout conditions during a raging blizzard. Every day is different. It’s impossible for me to get tired of spending time here!
inbal solomon
The fort is closed, I hope they restore it and open again because it looks amazing even now.
The headlight is beautiful, the man at the museum was very helpful and nice! Made our visit there even more enjoyable.
G Aquino
A must-visit if you are in Portland. The place is only about a half-hour drive from downtown Portland and has a beautiful and historic lighthouse that is very picturesque in the winter. Check the weather before visiting, especially during winter, and layer up as necessary. It was sunny but below freezing when we visited and even with thick layers on, we could only brave 20 minutes of cold weather before retreating back to our car.
Leong
Awesome views. I’m glad the park is opened during winter as well. The lighthouse looks fantastic
Diane Robinson
My favorite part, I walk there several times a week. So peaceful, beautiful, clean, inspiring!
Jenny
Very lovely, well-maintained park. There is ample space for parking at a reasonable rate (but you will be ticketed if you aren't careful of your time). It's a great spot for a picnic or to fly a kite. It can be very busy (especially during tourist season), so if you don't like crowds, I would recommend going in the early morning or evening. Additionally, the porta-potties are kept quite clean!
Marion T
I went with my boyfriend for a day trip and this place was so pretty!!
Rob Ripley
Beautiful park, lots to explore!
Parking is $2 per hour, minimum 2 hours;max $10.
J. S.
Amazing place to visit , take picture, go for a walk, enjoy the view. Enjoy the history. Make sure you make some time to go there, yes there is lots of pictures of it but nothing like seeing it in person.
Galen Blanton
Beautiful open space to take in the view. Speaking of view, what a great place to take photos of an iconic Maine lighthouse. Oh, and the park is dog friendly, with an “off leash” section.
Tiffany
This place was beautiful the history behind it was truly amazing and the children loved it..... highly recommend this place if you visit Maine
driski90
Take my advice. Pay to park. It's worth it. $7 for 3 hours. We had a family reunion and a few got $23 tickets for not paying.
It's such a beautiful place, and if he's there, visit the Scottish artist selling his prints. He's amazing!
Traci Laffin
We enjoyed the PORTLAND Headlight. And Fort Williams better than the Nubble Light. Dog friendly and more to see and do.
Beautiful!!!
Coco H
A beautiful and magnificent public space full of cool historic architecture from various times in history, right on the edge of the ocean. I can’t count how many times I’ve visited this perfect place.
Grace “милост” Lane
Such a great historical place! The view is just marvelous! Definitely recommend going there!
Aziza Anderson
Beautiful place to catch the sunset and hear the crashing of the waves. Take time to walk around the park and enjoy the wonders of Maine!
Rachel Poth
Perfect place for climbing some easy rocks. Even when it is packed here there is still room to move about. The community of Cape Elizabeth keeps this place in pristine condition. Be kind and take out what you bring in.
Jennifer Evans
Beautiful park, right on the ocean built out of an old military installation. The ruins are still visible, which makes it fun to explore. There are two areas for kids to play, one with swings and the other with a "big toy," a dog park, and sports fields.
G L
WOW! Views here are wonderful. There's a lovely trail that goes around the coast. It is hilly so best be prepared with proper footwear. There is also a small beach area that you can access when you first drive in, but there is also more abundant parking if you continue on. Parking cost me $5 for 2 hrs.
Dani McCarr
Nice views, a small beach to dip feet (albeit very rocky which is tough on bare feet). Parking pretty easy ...use the kiosk (4 bucks for 2 hours).
Bluerulzs
Awesome place to visit with family. The view is superb. Best place for a Picnic. The ground is awesome. Kids can play here. You also have a parking on the grass meat children play area. Kids will love it. You got so much to do here. People can tend to spend 4 hours here with lunch. Park is well maintained. One of the best places to visit in Maine.
Nathaniel Kraft
Beautiful, expansive public parking with incredible ocean views; the Portland Headlight (lighthouse); and remnants of an old mansion and old army battery installation. There's even a nice playground tucked back away from the more touristy parts. Great for light hiking, exploring, meditating or a family picnic.
Cassandra Fishback
BEAUTIFUL. Lots of places to walk. They're currently re-paving a lot of the sidewalks though (may 2019) so be ready to go around certain areas. Great place to fly a kite!
Ranadheer Purupati
Awesome park for everyone. Lots of things to do and see
Kathleen Haines
A beautiful park to spend thw day and picnic while enjoying breathtaking views of the ocean and the lighthouse. Great historic military base too.
Namrata Bilurkar
Beautiful sunrise, easy to find and an amazing experience. My friends and I were able to park nearby and hardly needed to walk for 2 minutes to catch this beautiful sunrise.
Mariano Santangelo
One of the most beautiful places on the coast and the site of such iconic light house. Maine at its finest
Rory Benjamin
Without a doubt one of the best and most beautiful parks in the greater Portland area to visit. A stunning cliff walk, off-leash areas for dogs, and a nice variety of food vendors in the summer time. Free admission and no parking fees for such a location is a rarity nowadays.
Gavin Hurst
What a beautiful place! The lighthouse and all of the trails made for a great day trip!
Amanda Asselin
So beautiful to see. Great place to explore or relax. Has small beach area. Just perfect
Y BAE
Beautiful landmark in Maine. I enjoyed amazing ocean cliff views and waves. I would recommend to be there early in the morning to avoid crowds. Parking is not free, $5 for two hours. Temporary restrooms near the parking lot were only available when I visited.
Jose Rivera
This is a great place for leisurely strolling around, bird watching, picnicking and just enjoying the view.
Donna Alger
If you visit Maine, this is a must!! Portland headlight is in this park and as of this writing parking is free! Update: there is now a fee for parking unless you park in the lower parking lot! Take the first right after driving into the park and drive all the way to the back. Park on the grass on designated area. You will find lots of open areas to walk your dog though leash laws are still in effect here, a children's garden, a pond, a playground, a beach, picnic tables and grills, some food trucks or bring your own lunch, the Portland headlight, a gift shop, old forts and structures and some pretty cool geocaches!
Theo Martinescu
Beautiful park and gorgeous light house
Shea Murphy
I like it here, but it hasn't been as nice since they fenced off EVERYTHING and started charging an arm and a leg for parking
Kyle McFerren
Free entry but a small fee for parking. Huge park with great views of Portland Head Light, which has to be one of the most beautiful lighthouses I've seen. Wish we would've had more time to explore the trails here.
Dulcey Darville
Beautiful park ! Awesome location for a picnic, family reunion or wedding. Gorgeous coastal views
Ivy
Was really excited to come here until we saw there’s parking fees. You can only get a minimum of two hours which doesn’t even make sense because there’s barely two hours of things to do so we just took a photo and left.
Andrija Visekruna
Beautiful park with great walking trails along the cliffside. Magestic lighthouses make for great photo moments. Plus, it's home to the "Bite into Maine" food vendor which serves the best lobster rolls in the Greater Portland area.
Scott McCallum
Been coming to Ft. Williams since I was a kid. Great place for a visit, first date, whatever. Pretty versatile location, fun day trip, food, and plenty of walking by the beach. ⛱️👙🩴🐚 …
Grace Wei
I'm very fond of this place at the first sight of this park. There is a museum at the base of the light house. The lady working there is very friendly and knowledgeable.
Annette yadira Rivera
Amazing view, relaxing and clean areas. A lot of people doing exercises, others enjoyed the beautiful view.
MJ Springer
Incredibly well managed park with diversity in offerings, ocean beach, historic lighthouse and military installations plus a beautiful open space for all to enjoy.
Jodi-Lyn Kwiecinski
Great place to fly a kite, have fun with the kids outside, rent a event area, you can spend the whole day here or just 20 minutes. It is on the coast and can get VERY windy and cold.
Marty McMann
Pretty nice size park with lots of differnet historic buildings. Beautiful views of the coast a must see lighthouse.
Kevin Cordes
Awesome place for a picnic style lunch. Great views of the ocean and a large field to play Frisbee or soccer.
David Felder
Beautiful park just fix your parking situation. The parking kiosk process is garbage, if you don't get a receipt you'll get a $23 ticket instead of paying $5 for parking.
Yiqiang Zhang
The park is really nice, but to avoid parking citation, one may not Passport for parking payment. Otherwise, you may still get a citation for parking violation anyway.
Michael Stone
Portland Head Light. One of the most iconic light houses in the world. A must see if your in the area. Gorgeous views.
Danielle Floyd
This was our first trip to the children's garden and it was amazing. Not only is it a beautiful spot, but the kiddos LOVED the granite slide and the little "caves" to climb through. Pair this with the amazing views of the cliffs and the oceans and it's just perfect.
Lis Oliveira
Amazing place! They've improved and built a new path all around the Clif on the left side of the headlight. Just beautiful.
Lomesh Patel
Awesome location and views. This was in November, so, it was pretty cold, but we still enjoyed our time there.
Kandi Smith
Awesome! The graffiti on the bunker house was quite a disappointment but other than that was a really neat place to visit.
Tapan Rajpura
I went there in starting of March and the place was not crowded much and the view was awesome. One should definitely go to enjoy with friends and family.
Sonia Bermonty
My husband and I love it! Had we not eloped we actually would have got married here. The scenery is so beautiful and the forts are really cool and if your into sunsets you got to see it here!
Matt Dyer
Always a great place to visit for a walk, great scenery and even explore old forts. They've been doing a lot of landscaping, creating walking paths and scenic photo taking spots.
Bonnie R.
These pictures were taking during a thunder storm , but although it was raining it still shows the true beauty of one of Maines best landmarks. I love it here .
Terry Weiser
Very clean, pet friendly, great parking, no fee due to the time of the year
Vickie Knowles
One of my favorite places. I go every year, been going for 49 years. It never gets old.
Charles Caron
Ruins, lighthouse, beach, oh my! Lots of things for almost every one and gelato! It was a big hit with our group. Kids love climbing over the fort ruins and seeing the boats in the harbor.
Ber-Moses Jr. Terry
Fort Williams Park, beautiful sceneries and nice historical site.
Cassandra Chandrabhan
This entire park is beautifully kept and well maintained. We enjoyed the views and walking around.
Julian Malcolm
This is a very nice park. It has the 1790s lighthouse and museum along with an Endicott period fort with many old gun Casements and buildings. The ruins of an old mansion also are on the park. It has a little bit of everything. Unfortunately many of the gun casements built in the early 1900s have been filled and you can see the tops of the structures. A few still remain and a powerplant building is also located on the park road entrance. Definitely visit.
Amanda Qumsiyeh
Really nice and clean park. The lighthouse was beautiful to take pictures of, unfortunately it was closed when we got there.
Daniel Carpentier
Good park to take a walk and have a picnic. A great view too.
Angie Ingham
Dogs can enjoy off leash in adjacent Deering Park
Susmita Ray
Though due to 4 th July weekend place was overcrowded. But nice view and nice to visit. There is no proper restrooms, only portable one. For this giving 4 star
Mara Factor
This park has something for everyone. A beach for swimming, ruins for history buffs, a cliff walk offering view after view, picnic tables, large expanses of grass for frisbee or kite flying, an iconic lighthouse, and for the foodie, only the best lobster rolls around, sold out of a food truck no less.
Nicolas Duque Arango
Nice place to take a walk and learn about history, surrounded by beautiful scenery.
Grizz Erickson
We had a ton of fun here climbing on the rocks and playing on the beach.
Stacy Redding
Beautiful view and well worth the stop.
Andrew Baker
Fort Williams is always wonderful. Sort of annoyed by the parking fee, and the machines are janky, but the seashore makes up for it. Great place to bring kids, and it's actually a whole park, not just a lighthouse surrounded by big lawns.
Michael Salesse
Nice calm park to visit. Great views
Paul Trelc
Beautiful setting. Would be nice to improve the picnic area at the top of the hill
crazy rabbit lady
Beautiful scenery! It's a shame that the area was spray painted but was really neat to see.
Deborah Morrison
Very nice to take a walk and watch the waves. We explored the battery keys, walked the cliff walk and visited the lighthouse museum
LaRene Wentworth
I walk my dog here. It's very friendly.
Claire
Nice park to visit, lots of history!
Y C
Fort Williams is a gorgeous, clean park with plenty of parking. It feels like several different parks wrapped into one. There is a small rocky beach with a few picnic tables and a cliff walk with views for days and a variety of plant life. There is a lighthouse, children's garden (easy to miss), fort structures, open fields, and lots of open green spaces. My family and I absolutely love this spot.
Lila1226 Girl
Such a beautiful lighthouse and surrounding area. Entrance is free to the park, but you do have to pay for parking. It was $2 per hour with a $4 minimum. We did two hours, but easily could have spent more time there. Be sure to do the walk along the cliffs. It is spectacular!
Kevin MacKaye
Always pleasure to visit Fort Williams and Portland headlight. Not only a historic site, but a nostalgic one. You can't help but make wonderful lasting memories here.
Harvey Dorn
Lighthouse is great and the grounds well kept. The military history is lost in the old building foundations.
S Zaman
most beautiful place to be. I will visit again.
Chris Maynard
Beautiful place with great views of the ocean and lighthouse. Decent walking trails too.
David Chadwick
Great place for a walk. Wonderful views. Great for kids.
Danielle Tilden
Awesome abandoned structures from WW2 are fun to explore and photograph. Beautiful lighthouse. Nice grounds for picnic and swimming.
Frank Bauman
An absolute gem just south of Portland, ME. I stopped by early in the AM 04Sep21. As you enter, the remnants of a building greet you and it only gets better. Parking is so easy and abundant. It only cost me about $4 for two hours - a DEAL! The paths to the overlook are clean and easy to access. Bathrooms consist of portable 'johns' so bring the sanitizer. The overlook is just stunning! The lighthouse is gorgeous, the ground extend far beyond just the lighthouse, as some baseball or soccer fields are located on the grounds. I could have spent much more time here exploring, but a MUST do if you are anywhere near Portland. I noticed that the staff was extremely attentive and abundant while I was there and answering questions while keeping the growing crowd in order.
Mark Nenadov
A lovely place to visit with beautiful views of the ocean, a lighthouse, old military bunkers, and beautiful walking trails. And it is free!!
Nancy Leonard
Beautiful! The lighthouse is just awesome and the views are simmering else!

Great wide open spaces and old historical places to see

Nice lighthouse. Great view from the rocks.
Brandon “Mr Brando” Hicks
This is an amazing place! Great views and calm surroundings.

Great place for taking a walk or having a picnic. Historical place, I'm sorry for not having a photo of the forts.
Douglas Page
Beautiful place with plenty of shoreline Cliff trail to explore but watch out for the horse flies in summer.
Olga Cardenas
Too bad that i went in a rainy day but i have to say that this place is beautiful.

Heather MacPhee
Love this place! So much to do and see and it's very well taken care of!
Jeremy Hank
Such a beautiful park and full of history! Between this park or going to Two Lights, I highly suggest visiting this one.
dragonneus
Place us awesome! A fort, lighthouse (viewed others by the sea) islands, old structures of stone. Many paths to walk. It even had a picnic Pavillion. I highly recommend you visit here if near Cape Elizabeth. It will not disappoint the curious, outdoorsy or the lovers of history and nature.
John Enzweiler
Great part to spend the day and take in some history and great views.
Natasha Jordan
Always beautiful and so much history
Ron Jobel
Parking is a little pricy. Really need a whole half day to do justice. Wear comfortable shoes. Food is available but you can bring your own and picnic. Think twice depending rainy weather
Hailey Marnell
We had a short wedding ceremony here, under a covered area due to rain. Absolutely beautiful park, very well maintained (most porta potties were clean). Highly recommend a trip here. Lots to see!
Cathy Hale
Very cool place!
Debra Boggs
Great to walk with the family. Amazing views and parking and entry are free. Definitely worth visiting!
Juliana Sowinski
A gorgeous, incredibly well maintained park. A lot to offer and views well worth the daily parking fee.
LTYL
This place is super cool. Beautiful setting, well kept, easy to view the old hidden seaside forts. Gorgeous view! Plenty of areas to walk and bring a picnic too. Great for kids.
Jessica Clair
This state park is a treasure. Could have spent much more time here.
David Shoemaker
This is a nice place to visit. The lighthouse is very beautiful. The only issue is the parking. No where is any signs that there is a parking charge. We are from Pennsylvania and our state foes not charge for parking in state or city parks. Tourist please be advised the parking citations will be issued as was mine for $23.00. I received a reply from the park about the issue I had with parking. That they need the parking fee to maintain the park. I agree they need the parking fee. The only request I have is to have parking signs visible when you enter the parking area.
David G
Very scenic, the light house is Maine's number one photographed building.
Chris Campbell
Interesting historic spot from the WW2 years. Portland head lighthouse is a gem! Most photographed Lighthouse in Maine
sandra samonte
Fort williams is a gem on its own. Very picturesque place.
Claytonius Titus
Very neat site with ruins to explore (though many are closed off) excellent sites of the sea and a few tidal pools available to spelunk when the tide allows.
Brenda Barden
Beautiful scenery. Going back when warmer
Katie Jones
Beautiful park and great food truck!
William Dale
We loved this stop. It's hard for Portland to live up to expectations after stopping here first. They have playgrounds and picnic areas.
Chris Bigg
Beautiful lighthouse and fort. Lots of rocks to climb during low tide and the lighthouse is majestic.
Colby Gokey
Awesome views and great spot for a picnic with bae
Sharon efstathiou
Probably busy in the nice weather/summer .. just by the looks of the parking lot availability
Cynthia Ladd
We had so much fun visiting this area on a motorcycle. Lots to see , roads are good and Great views!
L C
Loved it. Plenty to see and do and all for a optional donation
Joe P
This place is amazing. It's free minus parking which is only $2hr or if remember correctly $15 for the season. Ample areas to walk. Well groomed grounds. Beach, lighthouse, old buildings and history. It is simply beautiful and a great place to spend a day or afternoon. Food trailers there during summer as well as port-o-potties.
Marcelino Perez
Beautiful and historic place if you haven’t visit you don’t know what you are missing
Al Giles
Beautiful setting. Nice walking trails. A nice afternoon out!
Marvin B.
Astounding lighthouse with rocky shoreline background. Picturesque at its finest
christina paul
One of the most beautiful places and nice for picnick, flying a kite, they have BBQs and port-a-potties.
Kate Bennett
I love fort Williams! There’s so much to explore plus it’s dog friendly! Love that! They have dedicated on ease areas and an off leash area. I love that they have both. Lots of picnic table kind of seating along the ocean, beautiful place to pack a lunch and go to for the day! They do charge for parking now but it’s totally worth it and I love seeing how much they’re improving the park and growing it.
Nate Anderson
We come here all the time and scramble around on the rocks and explore the old ruins. Great community space. Kids love it.
Ash
This is one of my favorite spots to visit being a local Mainer. I usually go during the week around 7:30pm to watch the sunset when the crowds are less and the breeze is nice. Bring a camera with you when you go, it's a beautiful spot to take pictures and a great place for kids as you can climb on the rocks and ruins of the fort (at your own risk). Recently they started asking that you pay for parking (money goes towards maintaining the park) but it's pretty cheap, I think it's a dollar per hour or $15 for a season pass so not bad at all!
Cyber Techie
This is a great place to see and take pictures. The rock formations are amazing and there are nice trails to be able to take in may different views of the lighthouse. You cannot go into the lighthouse, but parking is cheap. Only $2 per hour with a 2 hour minimum. There is also a separate parking lot, away from the lighthouse, by a small beach area that you can swim in the water if you like. Paid parking in the one lot should allow you to move you car to the other since it is in the same park and you put a validated receipt on your dash that is time stamped when your paid parking expires.
Monica Teng
I was here Labor Day weekend and there were lots of peep but easy to socially distance. We climbed down the rocks by the lighthouse and my 8 yr old son loved that. There was a gelato stand where I got espresso over 2 scoops it was delish. So many photo ops and incredibly gorgeous, practically free. Saw some porta potties.
Lenny Adams
Beautiful location with plenty of walking and things to see. The views are great and you can walk right up to the lighthouse. There is a playground for kids within the park too. Best part, entry and parking is free. If you enjoy your time here, donations help support it. Very crowded in the summer and on holiday weekend. Go early if you don't want to fight for parking.
Jeremy Jaegers
Absolutely gorgeous!!!!! My family and I went to see the views after a couple from our camping site told us about this place. We went originally to old ormand beach but stopped hear on our way back and we were very stunned at the experience. We will be visiting again...
Ez Collins
Nice park, great views and trails.
Kathy “bookdiva”
Very pretty. Not particularly anything special but a nice walk-around, pretty lighthouse to photograph. Pretty view of the ocean but no access. This is really and truly a lighthouse park. There were public restrooms, no cost to get in the park when we went, pets are allowed on a leash.
Stacy Foster
Pay to park, absolutely no trash cans bring in bring out policy (personally I think you should have the trash cans anyway, it would reduce the trash people leave anyway) Good size, a few vendor food trucks. Features the most photographed lighthouse in the world
Kaela Simoneau
This would be a great place to take a date there is lots of little paths all around surrounded with native wildflowers, a beautiful light house, tons of old forts around to peack into, a small beach, and the ruins of an old mansion. Most paths are pretty easy but I'd suggest some sneakers. Unfortunately you can't go in to much to most of the forts or the old mansion it is fenced off, It also appears that the lighthouse is only open on the occasion so you probably won't be able to go inside of that either. The gift shop also closes at 2 and most of the food trucks close by 5 and may require cash. Also could only find Porta poties unfortunately
Tony Sargent
Amazing combination of emerald sprawling lawns, ancient geology, marine , crashing waves, military and maritime history, and countless angles from which to capture the beauty of the cotton-white lighthouse and its quaint keepers quarters. Definitely a must-see on your trek up the Maine coastline!
Sarah S
Parking is minimum of 5.00 for 2 hours.
Naomi Roslyn
This is one of my favorite places in the world. I reccomend coming toward sundown for a beautiful sunset over the water- plus then you will see the lighthouse lit. The natural beauty of the coast rocks and shore and flowers and hills make the settling dramatic and stunning. Don't miss this! NOTE: though this place is free, parking is $2/hr with a 2 hr minimum. So, $4. Worth it, but I frankly believe that state parks should have free parking.
Mirror Wolf
No wonder why it's the most photographed lighthouse in America! You can't really take a bad photo here because it's so beautiful.
Angie Jarvis
Went here with my son and had a great time! Lovely walk around and lots to explore! Some interesting characters as well. There are bathrooms and a food cart or two. There is a mini museum and a small shop by the lighthouse. Plenty of parking. Definently worth the stop on our way home!
jake
Beautiful park. Lighthouse was amazing. Dog friendly.
Cassandra Ericson
This is such a beautiful and special place. It’s a great family outing. The lighthouse has a museum inside. There’s a gift shop, food trucks, an old fort, a beautiful beach full of ocean-rounded rocks, and tons of rolling grass and rocky cliffs overlooking the ocean. You can walk around here for hours. It’s a great place for photography too. And there’s an open-air space that looks like it’s for party rentals atop the hill.
Gary D
Absolutely gorgeous!!! Great place to walk. You can hear ocean waves crash into the rocks. Also, the fall leaves surrounding the woody areas. Up from Tampa Bay. We loved it!!!
Wade Gardner
Amazing views of the coast around Portland. Multiple food trucks if you're looking to sample some local eats.
Michelle Pascua
Beautiful and beautifully maintained park. It houses the Portland Head Light and a little beach area. Lots of areas for picnics so you can imagine that it gets very crowded in the summer. But they charge for parking now! There's a children's play area but be warned don't go down the stone slide. It's much too steep and dangerous for kids and adults! Also, there aren't any trash cans so it's a bring in/take out area.
Sara Jolicoeur
Lots of history to wander around in and beautiful views of Portman Head
William MacCallum (Mac)
The secret is to go early and often!
Johnski Philosophy
Absolutely beautiful day today. A lot of people visiting. Horizon was as sharp as could be. You could see 100 miles!
Jewell Smith
This park has such a beautiful view of both the lighthouses, the ruins of buildings, and the ocean. It is definitely worth making the trip to see, especially since it is free. Although pets are allowed there are no trash cans to throw away your pets stool.
Yu Liu
This is one stop we made on our way from Arcadia back to Boston. We were not disappointed! The light house is beautiful on the background of blue sky and foreground of summer flowers. The little museum is absolutely worth your time. I learned the orders of light house lenses, and a little bit of the sophisticated optical design. There are many spots you can use for a picnic. Peaceful and relaxing!
Ines Porter
Absoltely beautiful !! The volunteers do an amazing job. Picnic tables....some with grills. Small beach, but very rocky. Old forts. My favorite lighthouse, Portland Head. Pathways throughout. Walkway, around the rock ledge, with a gorgeous view of the ocean and islands. Can have events there also.
Gary Lougee
This is one of the largest and most amazing parks that I have ever been to. Not only is there a ton of space for family gatherings, picnics, and just taking a stroll; but this park boasts a working light house, an abandoned mansion, and ruins of a military fort. Fantastic for enjoying the sun, the small swimming hole, and history as well!
Joe Wallace
Ft. WILLIAM'S IS A GREAT PLACE FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY! It's handicap accessible, it has outdoor restroom facilities, barbecue pits, picnic tables, and a place where you can even fly a kite!
There are even fenced off paths that you can walk along the jagged cliffs safely.
There are even old remnants of Ft. WILLIAM'S all around the many acres that it sits on.
On the 4th of July, you can even watch the fire works from Ft. William's, compliments of the good citizens of Portland, Maine.
Chris The Grouchy Raucci
Absolutely gorgeous park with most of the fort still intact. Great place to take stunning pictures of the lighthouse and Maine coast. Dogs are welcome and have their own off leash section
Scott Nutting
A fantastic place to fly kites. There's a great playground for kids as well as lots of wide open spaces for running around or playing games. There's a small beach and lots of rocky coast to explore. Speaking of exploring, my favorite thing about this park are the old forts you can explore. Beautiful vistas and probably the most photographed lighthouse in the world will give you memorable photos.
Nathan St. Onge
One of my favorite places on the southern Maine coast! So much space with scenic coastal cliff walk, historic lighthouse, tennis courts, wide open fields, picnic area, small beach, old forts, off leash dog section, natural beauty so close to Portland!
Zack Matloff
Long fields, very cool buildings, and always unique food vendors. Dogs are allowed, parking is free, and the grass is very well kept. Very fun for a day out, or to just go for a walk. Fort Williams is a very cool spot for taking pictures! #TeamPixel!
Cody Swanson
Beautiful coastal park. Not sure how this place is free, when other, much smaller (state) parks, are not.
Hillaire Gonzalez
This place is Beautiful!. Accessible and the cost to park is only $2.00 an hour (2 Hour Min though). My only complaint is the fact they only had porter potty’s. A tourist attraction like this really needs indoor plumbing.
Pamela Sandberg
An all-time favorite place to go for the serenity of nature!! 💕🕊️🥰 …
Paul Spangler
Beautiful place. Bring your walking shoes.
J S
Gorgeous view. Even if it's chilly, it's lovely.
Darren Bridgewater
Always a nice park to take the dog around and the kids to play, the children's park area is a little less crowded but unfortunately it's a victim of its own success so if you're looking for a nice chill walk then it's not the best place in season (spring to fall)
Ingy
great views food truck tasty but expensive for the portions.
Mark Bradeen
Love this spot. Very relaxing and lots of options.
John Chesebrough (Greaseymonkies)
Used to a great place to take company for a visit. Now they make you pay for parking and there are no trash cans available and all the rocky ledges are corded off with fencing. Just not the same as it was growing up... Still as gorgeous as ever though.
Dustin Lagrange
Always a good place for great ocean views and walks, but they have not cared for the historic fort and other related sites and it shows. Don't let your kids near the main fort (it's full of garbage and crumbling from years of vandalism and a complete lack of care). As long as you aren't visiting for the fort and it's related structures... It really is a great place to spend time on the beach, picnicking, letting the kids run around and great scenery.
Christina Levitan
There is so much to do here! We actually didn't even have the energy to see the whole place. Wish we could have. We noticed a playground when we first came in. They have trolley service / tours. There are fields and fields of room to basically do as you please! People were flying kites, having picnics, grilling, and just enjoying their time being with one another. The views are incredible! We did do some rock walking. I would recommend wearing some good sneakers.I went in flip flops and it was easier to walk the rocks barefoot. They have some incredible lobster rolls of all kinds! It is a must to visit if you are in the area!!
Lily Eileen Vincent
Absolutely beautiful place to walk around and the pond, baseball field, lighthouse, and rocks make it so you can make it a full day trip. Parking does cost money, but it's not dreadful.
Sadie
Been here for many events. Lots of wide open spaces both covered and open. Biggest attraction is ofcourse the view. Vendors for food and drink, after the muti walking paths.
J L
Beautiful scenery and lighthouse. Plenty of space to walk around too. Great spot for a picnic on a sunny day.
Christine Malott
Nice craggy rocks to explore and a fun light house.
bradford hanson
It's a beautiful park, full of history and life!!!! I especially love the Portland Head Light!!!!!
Angie Boehler
Ft. Doggo!
Amanda
A beautiful place to spend an afternoon. Swings for kids. Trails and beaches to explore. History to learn. And Portland Head Light is right there. Nice area for picnics (lots of picnic tables) and flying kites. Portable potties were clean and maintained. A must for locals and visitors alike!
Laura Leighton
One of my favorite places in maine
Daisy G
What a beautiful park! Lovely coastal walk with views of the lighthouse. The people that work here are the best thing about it though. They went completely out of their way to jump start our car when the battery died. Complete superstars. Thank you!
Mindy Ramirez
A great place to stop! Picturesque! Great lobster rolls at the food truck. Picnic benches. Small beach perfect for kids to play. Swing set. Historical sites. Dog friendly. Could easily spend several hours here if you wanted.
Stop at Scratch Bakery down the road before coming and grab other yummy pastries, coffee, wine, sandwiches or whatever you prefer and take to the park.
Cici Skyewatcher
Bring your dog but please keep it leashed!! Per Maine state law and out of respect for other visitors. Some people are fearful of strange dogs! Beautiful place to go and hang out lots of walking trails and birds. Wonderful photos to take of nature too
Gregory Hogan
Just discovered the Children's Garden! What a great place for children to explore amid beautiful flowers. And yes, I loved the stone slide.
Sarah Baril
My 2 sister's and I with our kids came here to take some pictures last weekend and it was awesome! So beautiful and fun for all ages! It was great! Can't wait to return.
Leslie
Visited here at the beginning of spring season. It was chilly but worth the extra layer and hats n mittens! The veiws are amazing. We watched a huge freight ship come in with the aid of tug boats. A sight none of my kids or husband had ever seen. We enjoyed the walking trails even tho some were still snow covered and slippery. It was a great stop along our trip of the coast from bar harbor to Hampton beach NH!
Patrick Torborg
We really liked the park. We got here kind of late in the day, but could walk around the outside of the lighthouse and went to the awesome playground. The food trucks were closing up, so we couldn't sample anything. The trucks seemed to close around 5:30, as the crowds were starting to dwindle.
Brian Rowe
This park greatly exceeded my expectations with great views, a picturesque lighthouse, historic ruins and plenty of walking and biking paths. There's plenty to see and learn about through the park. A great place to go for a walk or ride, but be careful of poison ivy.
Nathan Milkins
A beautiful view all summer long. Clean and we'll kept.
John McGowan
Super fun playground for kids and an amazing views and photo ops by the lighthouse.
Brendon Bean
Well maintained park. Recently new paved parking area. (was Gravel) News says the parking area will paid parking soon to arrive before the summer tourist season. Overall still a good place to visit, have a picnic, gather with family or visit the historic Portland Headlight lighthouse.
Emily Mouchon
Spent hours here exploring the forts, walking on the rocky beach, seeing the light house, gardens, there was even a gift shop and food truck! Great place to have a picnic, plenty of space for kids to run and not be in other peoples space.
Beth Perreault
This a beautiful clean family seaside park full of history trails and the most beautiful lighthouse in the entire country. Go for an hour .Go for the day but go!
Mary Daley
It's a great place to enjoy the ocean. There's a beach if you like swimming. A beautiful lighthouse to see. A walking path. Fabulous place to have a picnic with your family.
Patrick O'Leary
Beautiful place to go, fun fun fun. All Free to the public. With over 90 acres of recreational space, there are opportunities to picnic, fly a kite, stroll paths, tour the arboretum, walk the cliffside loop, explore the rocky beach, and enjoy the playground. The Children’s Garden will open late Summer 2016. There are two vendors in the park offering lobster rolls, sandwiches, and gelato.
Sonya Greashaber
plan a picnic! this place has a lot to offer. plan for a longer visit to be able to see everything. the trails are fun but can be steep. If you have problems walking you may need to reconsider. the Portland head light was under construction when were there but this place is amazing and well worth visiting
Glenn Davis
Beautiful ocean view and a lighthouse too Park has a history all its own
goco121
Very nice park. Terrific ocean front views, light house, lots of grass area, walking paths, picnic tables, nice landscape. plenty of parking, small beach area. play area for kids. Nice for family outings or a daily walk. Dogs welcome.
Clifton Forlines
Beautiful in any weather. There's a reason that this is the most photographed lighthouse, but be sure to do the cliff walk and check out the children's garden as well.
Emily Blood
Beautiful, nice to walk around and take pictures, the ruins are interesting to look at and explore, tennis courts, free to go in and check out. Lighthouse is pretty, food stand is pricey but that's to be expected.
Angelica Jimenez
Used to be such an awesome government owned park. Now you have to pay to park. This was never a thing before. I’m over how there is nowhere to park for free in the Portland area anymore. It’s easier to find free parking in manhattan! You can park outside of the park for free. Great place to watch the sunrise!

Great place for large groups! 4 hour minimum for parking at $2 an hour can't be beat! Lots to see. We have our birthday parties here!
Go to check out the food trucks, the Lighthouse or see the forts. There are no restrooms with the exception of porta-potties. I am sure these are maintained on a regular basis however due to the bolume of people, they are still pretty gross from my perspective.
Hoping the new pay for parking helps with installing real restrooms!

Fort Williams Park is a special place to me. In the park you'll find Portland HeadLight, one of the most beautiful lighthouses you'll ever see. There is also views of other lighthouses located nearby. The park has walking trails, a playground, picnic sheds, a gift shop open seasonally and awesome coastline. There is ample parking at various places in the park for cars as well as tour buses. If you're visiting Maine and remotely interested in lighthouses, Fort Williams Park should be on your "must see" list.
Amanda Lis-Estes
The new children's garden is worth checking out. The name is deceiving, it's so much more than just a garden! There's a pond you can walk over on stones, a rock slide, tunnels, a water fall, a story that you read while you follow the path, and more! My kids loved it!!
Robert Brammer
Stunning views! Park up by the lighthouse and walk around everywhere you can! There is ample parking in the event the closest to the lighthouse are full.
Ashley Gatchell
It was as gorgeous and well taken care of as I've ever seen this park. I love coming here each summer. It's a wonderful place to go.
Tina Seavey
My mother and my grandmother have been bringing me and my siblings and the rest of my family to this spot ever since I can remember. It's been 5 years now since my grandmother has been gone. But today was a great day out there at Fort Williams we had a picture of her with us sitting on the picnic table.
I love coming to this place now I have children and I want my children to bring their children here. It is a beautiful scenery.
#makingmemorieswithfamily 😁
It's been 37 years and I am glad to say that we still have Fort Williams to go to as a family gathering.
Karyn Hood
It's always a good idea to go to Ft. Williams. It never fails to astonish me with the beauty of this coast.
Mauger ville (Daviddavieboy)
I found this place while cycling one day. I am not from the area and was doing a little exploring when I came across here. What a lovely spot to spend an afternoon beautiful grounds a lovely light house and plenty to look at. Well worth a visit
CstOG
Very clean park. Has a place to.ise the restroom which is great for when you have children. Gorgeous views of the ocean and beautiful walking paths. It also is the location of a stunning lighthouse.
John Lane
Maybe it was just the time of year I visited, but I certainly disagree with some of the other reviews. The lighthouse is beautiful and well maintained, but the rest of the grounds aren't. The beach was littered with trash, the batteries were covered in graffiti, and the restrooms were disgusting.
Greg Bem
A classic Southern Maine experience. Even though I've been there dozens of times, I still go back when I return to Maine. I'd recommend checking out the entire park, including all of its nooks and crannies. Try to visit after dark, too, to get the true haunted experience.
Jessica Day
Beautiful! Great place to walk and get outta the house. Lots to see and look at. Had a mini photo shoot with my dog.
Amanda M.B
Awesome place!! Must visit if you're on Maine!
Katie Hatch
Great park for year round activity. Old forts and home to Portland ahead Light. Baseball diamond, tennis courts, picnic tables.perfect place for flying a kite! Small people beach.
Bob Nord
Relax and enjoy the views. Wonderful opportunity for walking and appreciating the things that came before us.
Joseph Conroy
A fantastic and historical place for family, friends, and events. Situated on the coast, there is over 20 acres of trails, cliffs, open areas, and a 200 year old Lighthouse to explore.
Lynn Foss
Beautiful park, loved the food trucks!!
Ann Taylor-Shaw
Came here last year and the year before and you didn't have to pay for parking. I was surprised but happy about it. Just went today and now you have to pay to park anywhere. Not only that but it's $2 per hours with a minimum of 2 hours. $4 isn't a lot of money but it is when my husband and I would just walk around for 15-20 mins and then leave. Drove up to the lighthouse and looked from the car and left. Really disappointed honestly.
Rich Lane
Great way to spend a day. Lots of fun walking along the shore or climbing amongst the rocks. Beautiful scenery and a bit of a history lesson.
Jeremy Bourque
Portland head light is the most photographed lighthouse in the world. Doesn’t matter how busy it is there’s always a place to park and find a place to have a picnic. Lots of open space for the kids to run around.
I’d give then the extra star if they had more restrooms.
Shaughnessey McArthur
One of the most photographed places in Maine. Its stunning walk the cliff trail and explore the ruins of the old fort. Off leash friendly section for dogs as well.
Jen Dean
Walking trails on the ocean. Playground. Wide open areas to run (and sled down in the winter) on. Old forts to explore. Beach to play on. And a great hill for kite flying. You couldn't ask for a more picturesque or fun spot to be at (or use as a backdrop for portraits) in Maine or anywhere.
Kate Savidge
I love Fort Williams. Such a nice, quiet place to enjoy a bagel and a cup of coffee from Scratch Bakery in the mornings. There are usually just a few people walking their dogs in the mornings so I can sit and watch the ocean, enjoy the breathtaking scenery before I start my day.
Brian Bradley
Park is nice with the Portland light inside
Karen Brennan
What a lovely park to enjoy . Great for all ages .
Nami Rochford
Have been going here for decades. They really should start metering spaces and generate monies for upkeep of park and it will allow more spaces to be freed up. Also the old mansion should be rehabed and opened to the public as a historical artifact to the maritime history of the area.
Don Wynn
The park is nice enough but I do have one complaint about parking. The issue is that the parking is somewhat limited in terms of available spaces and there are not enough of the kiosks that are used to make payment. Lines form in front of these kiosks as people try to get through the process.
Paul Bouchard
There are many reasons to go Fort Williams. You can explore the old fort structures, take in the iconic Portland Headlight. There is a wonderful children's garden and a playground with big and small equipment. In the summer there are food trucks and artisans.
Joel Couch
Views of the lighthouse and waves thrashing the rocky coast are the big attraction. Also dog owners convene to stroll with their pets. There are open areas here that allow many forms of play.
Pat Hunter
Although popular and sometimes busy, the views and walks around the park are beautiful. We bring our two corgis every year to walk it.
Stephen Murphy
Love love love this place . Hills to roll down with the kids. Alot to see and way to get to the rocks a climb on the great shore line of Maine .
Patrick Ross
We enjoyed a nice walk along the rocky coast. A couple signs explain the historical purpose and use of the fort, which protected Portland's harbor until the First World War.
David DeRossette
The park was beautiful and really nice to walk around. You could spend the day exploring history or just fly a kite in a field. Well worth the stop
Ivan Ramos
Beautiful views and only pay for parking meter. Great 1/2 day trip.
Miranda Alexander
Always a good time. A beautiful place to spend a couple hours exploring.
Patrick Sullivan
Former 19th and early 20th century military base. Now public park owned by Town. Something for everyone. Picnic areas, walking/jogging trails, cliffwalk, old ruins to explore, functional lighthouse and a small beach. Dog friendly. No admission and plenty of parking.
Stephen P
I was only expecting to eat lunch here but I ended up staying for hours walking the trails and taking in the history and incredible scenery. Except for one fenced off building that's apparently "dangerous," the park is very open and allows you to get up close and personal with history.
hey I'm Elias
Breath taking - - great for a nice easy hike / walk. Personally enjoyed scaling the ocean cliff side. Beautiful spot to watch the sunset at.
L K
This is the BEST FAMILY PARK. It offers extensive family fun and enjoyment for anyone with its enormous landmark, Portland Headlight, beautiful landscaping garden for picnics, day hikes, exploration, playgrounds, tennis courts, a small beach with seaside grills and picnic tables, kids explorative pond, barbecue grills, tables and a gazebo. There is something for everyone who loves the outdoors here.

Breath taking beauty. Salt air, history and the sound of crashing surf. Skip Rock's on the beach and have a picnic. The seagulls are professional scavengers and are hilarious to watch. Unless it's your slice of pizza. You just gotta see this Jewel of a light house.
Jerry close

This is a "must visit" while in the State of Maine. Beautiful scenery, excellent historical attraction, wonderful trails, excellent lobster rolls at the Bite of Maine food truck within the park! Would like to see a more permanent bathroom installed versus the porta potty's they currently have.

The park on the former Army coastal artillery base of Fort Williams is a true treasure. Within is the famous national landmark of Portland Headlight. It has changed a lot since my first visits in the 70s - for the better. The pictures for this site say it all.

Great park, practiced ultimate frisbee there for years in high school. Portland headlight and the forts are also good places to take pictures. Honestly 6/5 stars.

State run park with several old "bunkers" and plaques. The lighthouse has a museum inside and a small fee. Donation boxes are easy to locate if you want to assist with the maintenance costs.
Matt C
Lovely park, good parking, clea. And tidy and good selection of food vans. No bins/trash cans, I get the idea why, but not sure I agree!
ervin brown
The one big flaw of this place is that there isn't enough signs to show that you need to pay to park. We got a parking ticket and we didn't know why until just after we left.
robert herrick
