Reviews of Bug Light Park
Stephanie
We had an amazing time here! The light house is so cute and you can go up around it and have a "Jack & Rose" (from Titanic for you youngsters) moment facing the shoreline with some fresh sea, seagulls, and boats to watch.
But too touristy, picnic areas, dog friendly, and historical information to read if that's your thing.
Not as big a location as Big Light but we had a better time here than at Big Light.
Danielle Tardy
I absolutely love this park. I follow the bike path on morning my walk/dances ( more fun then power walking.) There are lots of little off paths to explore and rock cliffs of that's your thing. You can walk out to the light house or sit on the many benches placed facing out at the water. I love all the tree areas. Great place to take a break in the shade and feels like ur all alone in a big park.😍
mani agg
We really enjoyed it here! The light house is beautiful and the trail is beautiful! The views are absolutely beautiful, the parking lot is little bit small but I am not sure if they have more parking spaces somewhere else but it’s still worth it to come visit this place!
Hit Man
Bug Light Park is one of my most favorite places on earth honestly! It is a perfect bike ride or walk from my house and such a great place to fly my drone! I'm able to fly to Fort Gorges and across the water into Portland from Bug Light. I took these photos today :)
R Davis
Cute little park. Do not follow your GPS into the marina park, you'll have to pay for parking. Turn right just before the booth and follow the road back to the parking.
Benches available for sitting. Handicapping parking, but the smooth path only goes so far. Wheelchairs and walkers won't make it on the walkway up to the lighthouse.
Abi M.
Not one of the biggest or prettiest lighthouses, but still historic and unique. The Bug Light Lighthouse was erected in 1875 and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places!
You can walk to it and walk around it but cannot go in.
daniel deutsch
Short lighthouse within the city limits of Portland, ME. Very scenic with a little park attached to it. There is also a maritime WWII memorial on the grounds. Went during the winter despite the cold. The temperature was about 23 degrees but the wind was brutal; just keep that in mind.
Larry Shulman
It was literally pouring rain and cold/ foggy. The lighthouse was pretty impressive but the liberty ship display was really great too. Combined the stop was definitely worth it. Lots of soggy shoes & clothes but a nice stop on a tour of the area.
Luz Celeste Segarra Ramos
Beautiful park. Nice to see the ocean from another view. The wind was too much! And it wasn't that cold. We couldn't stay for long.
Hoang Dang
This park was very nice and the light house was very cool. Very chilling to take a relaxing breather away from everything. I enjoyed the park and the light house view.
A Grant Madden
Beautiful little park with lots of room to get out and play. Beautiful sights with sailing boats and ships going by. The little lighthouse is awesome and oh so cute.
Juan Miguez
Very nice park with iconic views of Portland. Here you may take pictures of the skyline and the lighthouse.
Additionally, it is great to walk and run.
Be mindful the shirt road leasing to the lighthouse is in good condition, but old stone style and it could be rough for some people to walk or run, forget about riding a scooter.
It is a park worth to experience.
Dolores Daley
We took my special needs brother here for his 55th birthday and lucky us..they were flying a lot of kites that day!My brother enjoyed it a lot.
Kay Rodriguez
This park was a relatively short walk from the Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse, and I’m so glad I made the walk here. The Liberty Ship Memorial wasn’t just a monument. There was a lot of history, and I got to learn about what Bug Light Park was before it was Bug Light Park. There’s lots of room to do all sorts of activities like frisbee and running, and there’s a beautiful view of the city. Plus, the lighthouse is designed after European architecture. It’s so pretty! Great place to relax after a long day of walking.
Michele Garone Gersten
Nice lighthouse on the smaller side. Located by a beautiful park. We were there early morning, and it was foggy.
Sharon O'Riordon
What's not to love about this beautiful park? It has free parking, picnic tables, benches, a very large field, walking path, historical museum, and of course a breathtaking view of Portland Harbor!
Wayne Walk Jr
Nice viewing area of the bay. Enjoyed the very detailed signs of the area's ship building history. The Bug Light is unique to see!
Anchal Kesari
Quite scenic. Peace and beautiful view. Nothing alot to do but yeah can visit one time to spend some quality time.
Stephen Priest
Wide! Expansive! Great views of the bay and city 🏙️. Visit the lighthouse. See the exhibit dedicated to the shipyard. Fly a kite 🪁. Take the dog 🐕 for a walk. Ride your bike. Free parking available. Was busy but not crowded.
I recommend a visit. …
Ricky Chung
compare with two light state park, I prefer this park, at least it is free to entrance, and have a actual lighthouse there!
Daniel GB
Living down the street from this park is one of the many great things about life in Maine ❤ I walk the dogs there, looking out onto the ocean, surrounded by open space and a sense of peace and tranquility. You can walk out to the lighthouse and get even closer to the ocean. Ride your bike around the pathway, bring a Frisbee or a kite, have a picnic, or just meditate alone. This place is a wonderful treasure!!
Michael Szubrowski
Wonderful park with a well known small lighthouse.
Jacob Milam
Cute little Park lots of people around and kites flying while we were here. The light house is kind of small if you are expecting what you always picture. They do have a little exhibit for the liberty ship's that were built during WWII at Portland that was also super interesting I would suggest stopping by and reading about.
Ajith Rajeswari
Free parking unlike the Portland head lighthouse. Less crowded , a good location to watch the sunset over the city, I have seen people angling during my last visit so I think may be a good location to fish? good location for photography too(attaching some shots)
Zachary DeBoer
A very cool park with a cool little lighthouse. The views and scenery are top-notch (like so many other places in this city). Parking was a bit limited on a Sunday but it's worth it to stake out a spot and take in this great public space.
Lucas Hernacki
I was here on the 4th of July, great show! Looks like anice big space for hanging out by the water. Also caught this awesome pic!
Sharon Binette
Nice large clean grassy park with tar walkways. Dog and kid.friendly. great views. Nice breeze, good place to fly kites. Historical site. Able to walk to and around light house.
The porta potty's are however quite NASTY.
Jamie
Beautiful views, people around flying kites, walking, chatting, sitting on benches, dogs belly up scrstching backs on grass. Somehow the only sounds were the waves hitting the rocks, a train off in the distance. It would be a great place to stroll with your dogs or kids, have a picnic, etc.
Sharon Allen (SDALLEN)
There is a bike trail that takes you to the park where you can take a seat on a bench and watch boat and bird traffic; it's handicap accessible, has a
boat launch, parking. Portable toilets on site.
Inna M
Not beautiful as Portland lighthouse but nice
Joetta Bridges
This lighthouse is so pretty. The walk over the breakerwall was an interesting experience as some of the boulders were a little far apart. I would not recommend for small children as it is a little hard to navigate for young children.
Peter Wiernicki
The lighthouse and walkway out to it are the main attractions. The park overlooks beautiful Casco Bay, where you might catch a glimpse of several sailboats or maybe a tall ship if you're lucky. On a clear day you can also see across the bay to historic Fort Gorges.
Carpio Cyprinus
Beautiful park with lots of benches for a picnic and grass to spread out and tan in the sun! The lighthouse is beautiful and is listed on the national historic registry due to the unique architecture and ornate facade. The views of downtown Portland are amazing. This beautiful park is well worth a visit.
Linda Stair
Love this lighthouse park great place to talk to people and very dog friendly
Angie Boehler
I was buggin' out! Camera-ready Casco Bay view of Portland! Lighthouse ✓. Rightious art installation/War Memorial honoring Maine's ship-building workforce. Best thing of all? If your dog is under voice command you can lose the leash.
Jeannie Caccioppoli
Located in a beautiful park setting. People were flying kites and walking on the path. The lighthouse is small, but picturesque. Great place to visit.
Ashley Gatchell
Bug Light is absolutely beautiful. I've been coming here for picnics every summer for as long as I can remember. Theres a great view to watch the boats coming and going and their is a nice park area where people fly kites and tables and benches for picnics or just to sit and watch the boats. It's just a wonderful place to be.
Vincent Aceto
A tremendous place to enjoy the waterfront in South Portland. A beautiful view of the Portland skyline as well as Fort Gorges. Caso Bay never look so good from Big Light Park
spencer wiegand
My wife’s first lighthouse experience was a successful one! Its historical design and significance along with the public access was a lovely date.
Mike Horn
Great place for kids and adults. The type of place you propose marriage at. Parking is free and there are no costs to visit. There is a lighthouse, beaches, paths and historic locations. A few concession stands sell food and drinks on the property. There are slides and swings in the back.
The Sassy Patriot
Cute little park where people were flying their kites & enjoying the day. Nice and flat, easy to walk. A tiny precious lighthouse sits just steps away and is easy to access.
Whitney Honeycutt
Cute little place & we loved the lighthouse! You must stop at the museum & gift shop & hear the information they have to share!
Annette Koziol
Very nice park. You can walk right up onto the lighthouse. Beautiful views. Public boat launch. Great for quiet viewing or bring your dog for a walk.
Star Gazer
Such a beautiful park!! Nice walk to the Lighthouse even in the Winter.
Rani Patel
Super pretty and simple. I wish I could have came here for a sunrise or a sunset. I bet the view would have been a sight to see.
David Rhee
Pleasant lighthouse.. great place for kiting.. great view of portland downtown.
Graham Vinson
During a visit to South Portland, we were looking for a place to have lunch, and stumbled soon this gem. It seems many others had the same idea, as it was quite busy, but we still found a place to park. Plenty of room to stroll and have a good walk, see the sights.
The views are incredible, something I did not expect. What really got me tho, was the Liberty ships memorial. So much history at this park, it was truly fascinating and quite the hidden gem.
Dee Dee
Good little lighthouse overall i dont really think portland was all that good or anything at all this was like the best location in portland overall friendly but rude people went over to jays and was disgusted by their service
Veronika
Just one big wow. It’s so beautiful and the views, almost hard to believe it was real.
Deb Popson
What a lovely park! I wondered why none of the benches were shaded, but the cool, constant breeze answered that question. The park is well maintained, easy to negotiate even with my 25' RV, was a wonderful hour or so in a driving day. The harbor is beautiful, Bug Light is charming and the staff was warm and accommodating. Great stop!
Greyson Thorne
Beautiful, clean, and tranquil. Beautiful place. I doubt anyone could come here and not enjoy themselves. Come here at sunset with a beer - it's a good time.
Hong Zhang
Beautiful park. S. Portland Greenbelt Pathway goes through it. Must-stop for cycling in S. Portland.
Marcus V
Easily accessible lighthouse, walkable park, plenty of parking and gorgeous views of Portland.
Terri Grover
We love Bug Light Park. Easy to park, beautiful setting. I love the history in the displays. And most of all it's dog friendly off leash! We take a quick walk all the way around through the woods. Then sometimes head to Red's Dairy Freeze!
Kirsten Alana Photography
Lots of parking, a beautiful view of a part of the city and even a possible connection to Rosie the Riveter because of the world war-era manufacturing that happened in this area. I think it’s a great option for sunset or just any time of day you want to be at the park though there isn’t a lot of shade if it’s really sunny and hot so beware of that.
Rōbi Ventures (Rōbi Ventures)
Cute park with a cute lighthouse and an interesting WW1 Monument.
Tyson
Very nice little park, we visited on a cold and windy but beautiful day. Just a short walk out to the lighthouse. We saw people enjoying the park with their dogs, they seemed to not mind all the wind :)
Brandon Robinson
Beautiful park with amazing views of Portland and nearby islands.
Mary Lou Hickok
Loved this, plenty of parking, lots of photo opportunities! Watched a cruise ship pull into Port. Cute little light house you could easily walk up and touch!
John Joy
Lovely little lighthouse with a short walk. While there, you can view another lighthouse off to the right of the bug light.
Bethie
Nice place to come for the views/photos. Paved trail along the shore almost all the way up to the light (wheelchair friendly) and lots of benches to sit and a big field for running/kicking ball/frisbee etc or dogs.
Mary Stewart
Very easy parking, nice walking area with awesome scenery from every angle, looking out toward the water. Many benches to rest and relax.
Brent Capener
Just a wonderful place in historic area. Fun for all ages. Rocks by the ocean and open fields for dogs and kites. Lighthouse, boats, islands, trails etc.
Ivo Miller
Cool place, you can walk right up to the light house.
A Rafferty
Amazing park for kite flying! I went to the festival in May, but there always seems to be people flying there. The muesem is lovely and have a great selection of ripstop nylon kites for the best prices I've found both off and online!
thomas fletcher
Nice but wouldn’t make it a must see trip. Nothing that great unless you want to see the harbor or ships at maine state pier from a different angle
Jason Jay White
It is so relaxing and gorgeous views of the ocean and cityscape
Peter Gailitis
Bug Light Park is an open and sunny park with free parking and wonderful harbor views of Portland and Peaks Island. See the ferry boats, schooners and maybe a cruise ship or oil tanker pass by if you time it right. Some nice picnic tables and benches are available if you want to bring your lunch and have a great view.
Trisha Watson
Decent little park, nice views of Portland harbor. Interesting display on ship building. There are port-a-potties, but they were a disaster when we were there on a Saturday morning in early October.
Tina Nelson
Great driving directions, easy access, beautiful views. I’d have loved to stay longer!
Cassandra Fishback
Beautiful park with a tiny lighthouse. Plenty of on-site parking. Free viewers. Good place to watch boats come in and out. Plenty of benches.
Michael Dempsey
Cool place, a bit of history and a park that is organically grown. Visit the museum nearby too.
Nicole Johnson
The Bug Light lighthouse was located close to the community college and offered a closer view of fort gorge. One of the smallest lighthouse we've ever seen. The park offers an art piece shaped like a ship
Tina “Tina Las Vegas” LV
A beautiful way to enjoy the park is on a foggy morning. Our Port is often foggy, cloudy, and rainy. Beauty is every day life. ❤
Ben Wang
Beautiful and scenic walk. Very cold and windy in late Nov. dress warmly.
Rebecca King
Nice park with a lot of history. Enjoyed stopping here and walking around.
Alex Marvin
A scenic peninsula park with a light house, walking paths, plenty of free parking (be sure to drive in to the right and not straight to the pay-to-park boat launch), a historical monument for WW2 Liberty Ships built here, and picnic tables. I didn't see any trash cans though. A great place to sit and watch passing boats!
Mark Whitnall
Great park, but when we attended the July 4 2022 celebration, the men assisting the Elvis impersonator were flashing the white power hand sign and looked like they may have been Proud Boys. Needless to say, this was like a kick in the stomach during what should have been a pleasant family event. I hope the organizers screen the entertainers more carefully in the future.
Ashley Powell
Awesome views, free parking.
Manoj
I like bug light park. People can walk and spend some time watching the port area and the sunrise/sunset. Sometimes flying kites and etc,.
Jeff H
If people didn't go here it would be great. Bring your trash 🗑 home and I don't just mean litter. . . …
Kate Kerrigan
Great park and light no matter the weather! Great for walking and families! ⚓️
Gresa Mustafa
Skipping over the rocks to get to the light house is the best part. Wear comfortable shoes. Very scenic.
Victoria Roth
Love doing yoga here with Kelly Rich Yoga 😍 also has the best views of Portland and the islands too! Great place to fly kites and watch the boats go in and out! …
Christopher Benning
Bug light park was so fun to explore that we did it twice. Both night and day trips.
Erik Teichmann
Bug Light is a great place for a quick taste of lighthouse charm. Easily accessible by car, or take the Eastern Trail by bike or foot from points South. from the base of the lighthouse and the breakwater there are great views of shipping coming in and out of the bay. There's also a nice field for frisbee or kite flying.
Yu-Hsien Ho
Neat little park with a lot of shipbuilding history. Stop by here on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. It's a tiny little lighthouse but quite picturesque. Can see the whole coastline of Portland from this park.
Scott Wykes
Enjoyed seeing the names of folks I knew as a kid memorialized in the stones along the path. Great views of the harbor.
Krista S.
Tiny little lighthouse in a nice area right next to the docks. You can go right up to this lighthouse and take some nice pictures. No fees for parking which is nice!
Jay Allen
Cute little lighthouse. Awesome picture of the water from it.
The park itself is really nice and decent sized. Nice wide paved trail around it.
David Niles
Great place to meet a friend, have lunch, or walk the dogs.
Martha Ward
Neat small lighthouse!
Bill Eugley
I love this park! Went to the Psrks and Rec Cruise In. Beautiful cars and what a venue!
Milla Silla
Great place to go for a picnic or just to hang out, my one proves with it is that there are not too many places to sit
Mark Miller
Nice place to walk off a meal and enjoy the view. It's a small park. Good for picnics. There are no working bathrooms, so not a place for lingering or for those with small bladders.
Gina Atkins
Adorable park to walk around and see Portland from a different view. The lighthouse doesn’t disappoint either.
Chris Pezza
Cloudy and cool day, but still great to see some lighthouses along Maine's beautiful coast!!
Cassandra Chandrabhan
Beautiful and clean park and lighthouse. Great for a picnic to overlook Portland's docks.
Jannean Dixon, M.Ed.
Walking space, green space, overlooks the light and the water. Benches available. Porta potties available usually.

Louis Maiden
Nice park with lots of seating to enjoy the views.
Nancy Fletcher
Cute little lighthouse.
Becky Noyes
Beautiful little park with a nice little light house that you can walk right up to. There's also a large ship's hull and lots of interesting information about how the area used to be a shipyard in WWII. The parking is a bit limited though, so you may have to swing back if it's a particularly busy day. We especially enjoyed watching the terns zip around and dive into the water for small fish. A nice place to spend an afternoon by the sea. :)
Hannah Freelove
This is a beautiful small park. It's quiet even though it's so close to the city and the view is so beautiful. It's well kept and from what I can tell it is pet friendly.
Dennis and Katherine Allen
My grandfather worked for Todd Shipyards and there is an awesome tribute to the battleship builders of WWII there!
Clayton Hamilton

Always cool to see historic places. The park is fun for the whole family and the water front views are beautiful. You can see the old fort gorge and other light houses. The wild life is fun to watch for the kids through the free binoculars. You can enjoy the boats sailing back and forth on the water.

Cute little place. With a amazing view and breezy good for dogs
Sarah Dee
Love Bug Light! The Kite Festival was amazing.
Christian Melson
A great place to sit and watch the boats come into Portland harbor. The park is quite large and has areas to picnic, fly kites, or sit and enjoy the sun. There's a small memorial to the welders of the liberty ships of world War two which is quite interesting if you're into that sort of thing. The parking lot doesn't have a lot of spots but I've rarely seen it completely packed.
Bonnie R.
This Park is beautiful and has a lot of history . The museum is very informative and the people are very nice. Great for flying kites , talking walks, enjoying lunch, breathing in the nice ocean water while enjoying the various boats, nice view of the city of Portland ,Maine. Nice place to walk your dogs and play with them . The lighthouse is gorgeous . I love this park.
J Wood
Beautiful little lighthouse, very close to parking. First time here, and will return soon.
Team Rudy
Nice, but small park. The lighthouse is a nice attraction, but there's also a play area and ship memorial. Parking area is somewhat small, if you're staying closeit would probably be good to walk if you can in case the lout would be full. Nice views of the island and ship port.
Izza N
Picture perfect post card like. I love love love this place. I will definitely go back here if I go back in Maine.
Beth R

Rob Clark
Neat and clean park, a great place for a walk or just to enjoy the beautiful water.
Jeritt Hemeon
We took some extra time to drive around and see the lighthouses. The neighborhoods were as impressive as the lighthouses.
We are going to be back to Portland and Portland South for sure.
Brandon Hepler
Very short lighthouse but plenty of parking and views of the Portland waterfront.
Brandon Blankenship
Very nice park and trails. Not to mention the view of Portland while having the Bug light there as well.
Kathleen Jarvis
Great place to watch ships go in & out of Portland harbor
Tod B
Really nice views of Portland across the water. Nice place for a picnic.
Michael Holmes
Very pretty little park with plenty of free parking. Lots of photo ops. Well maintained area to walk around. Porta-potty was pretty gross. Needs more frequent attention.
Dave Campbell
Cute little park with a large grassy area for kids to run or fly a kite. Edges lined with a few trees for a minimal amount of shade but otherwise open to the sun. You can sit in the car and enjoy the water if you don't feel like getting out or enjoy a walk along rocky coast. Our girls liked the ship sculpture. Parking was free but there are ot a ton of spaces. That said it didn't feel cramped and there wasn't really any waiting for a spot. It was a great spot to relax and meet up with family for a socially distant picnic.
Kristen Fissell
my favorite park I bike here almost every day in the summer
Greg Goodwin
A spacious waterfront park with enough parking most days. A beautiful view of the east end of Portland, Fort Gorges and passing boats, both large and small. The small lighthouse is a very short walk with a few granite steps to climb. Makes for nice photos and plenty of open space to run, fly a kite or just relax. A limited number of 4-people picnic tables are available.
Wandah Clark
This is a great place to walk. You can watch ships/boats coming and going. You can stand next to the lighthouse. You can learn about the ships that were built here during WW2.
Jane Croston
Wonderful park and great spot for watching the activity in the harbor. Bug Light is historical and lovely little light house. The SP historical society has a great little museum right at the entrance. ( Open seasonally and occasionally, so check site.) Parking is usually not an issue, and it's a grand spot to eat lunch, take a quick break and watch the boats. (Or a moonrise).
Russell Baldwin
Easy access. Perfect weather. Beautiful views.
Eddie Williams
A nice place to see Portland from across the water.
Captain Balderdash
Beautiful small park. A PERFECT place for a picnic, as there are several picnic tables and grills for you to use, plus a great view and some walking paths.
Max Upp
Great spot! But light is awesome.

Fun place to visit with lots of history. Check out the plaque for the Liberty Ships. How many ships per month they delivered... absolutely amazing.
peter wolfe
It is a fabulous park with plenty of room to walk, run, and play with your dogs.
Chris Eugley
Great park a little off the beaten path.
scott stafford
This is a great little park, nice clean family park. It's right on the water with great views.
Large area to picnic, and have family time.
Check the website for scheduled activities. They host things like. Fireworks, kite flying, food trucks, movie nights, etc
Ben Durkit
Absolutely beautiful, free spacious parking, lots of benches to just sit and take it in.
Linder R
Way better than expected. I enjoyed the story of the liberty ships and the cute little light house. This area has an interesting history. Unfortunately the museum was closed.
Clinton Alexander
What a fantastic little park! Beautiful views of Portland, the water, and lighthouse!
Michaelann Jackson
Beautiful park with the cutest lighthouse ever. Bike riding trails, walking trails and lots of history.
punit shetty
Great place to hang out with your partner or friends.
Serra Crowley
Not as impressive as other Maine lighthouses, but still a beautiful park on the water that is still worth the time.
Anthony Farr
This place was so cool. I've lived in Maine since 06 and this was the first time we've been here. It was a nice place to take a walk and the history was very interesting. I want to come back on a warmer day when the weather is clearer and I can see out into the water a bit more. All in all a beautiful park.
Lisa price
Very cool place! Be careful with older folks and children. Uneven surfaces.
Tyler Lund
Bug Light itself is a fairly small lighthouse with views of Portland. It's not a traditionally picturesque lighthouse, but rather a smaller one. The park though is very nice with plenty of parking, a nice open grassy area, and a nice path with great views of the water. It's also a great place for a picnic or for watching the fireworks over the city.
Ron Schnaper
The big wide open, dog friendly park with happy and friendly people and a cute little stubby lighthouse is a great place to take a stroll after dinner. The short approach to the light is constructed of giant rough-hewn granite blocks so the footing is precarious; hold onto the fence. The sunsets with the waterfront for background can be spectacular, but beware: at dusk the BUGS do come out to gobble you up.
Josh Lindgren
Great place to walk around barefoot. Incredible view of the city. One of the best sunset spots in the whole city.
Marlene Hentschel
The tiny lighthouse was such a novelty. The view was gorgeous. We saw many boats if different types. And just a walk away was a steel (?) skeletal model of a ship used in various wars with many interesting signs to read about the history of shipbuilding in the area and how it contributed to various wars.
Jean Williams
Although we have visited Portland many times, we'd never been to Bug Light before. What a beautiful spot to have our picnic and enjoy the view of the water, boats and even a cruise ship. The walkway around the park and up to the Light are relaxing and easy. Pretty, well maintained and pleasant!
Jeff Owens
We picnicked here and had a great time. In addition to the lighthouse, there are great views and a nice park area for eating, playing games in the large grassy areas or sitting on the many available benches to enjoy the scenery. There are free binoculars as well, which is a nice touch. Lastly, this park is close to both the Portland Head Lighthouse and right next door to the Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse, making it easy to see all three in a single morning or afternoon.
mei brown
Second time visit. The light house near by the other two light house in town
Heather Tanner
A great spot to watch boats coming and going. See the sunset and just relax.
Heather Smith
Grat small open place. Awesome outlook on the water.
Kelly H
Nice park. Looks like great kite flying place. The Liberty ship installation is very informative. Tiny lighthouse is fun to walk around. Views of the harbor and islands are great.
Loi Huynh
Another great place to pay a visit in South Portland beside Fort William Park
D E
I guess it was still off season when we got there because we where the only one there except for a pinning ceremony party on the grounds. We were lucky because we have that lighthouse all for ourselves. We took lots of pictures... it is beautiful.
Meg Genova
Cute park with a cute little lighthouse!
Joe H
Nice small park and lighthouse. Everyone out sitting on the benches and sightseeing were extremely friendly. It was very nice to check out the lighthouse and see all the boats traveling by. Lots of parking as well.
Jen George
This place is amazing and quiet in the mornings, and it hosts many fun activities throughout the year. The only thing I don't like about it is that, during this summer months when tourists are here, trash is left all over the park. Residents try hard not to make messes like this. Trash cans on located near the big ship memorial. If there's no room in the trash, please carry your own out and dispose of it properly. Please keep our places beautiful do we can share our best with you!
mary ellen hussey
Even though we went in march 2019 we still enjoyed the lighthouse and view
Stacey Guth
Very pretty place to watch the harbor. Great information at the historical boat yard park. Tons of free parking which is very convenient! Great open space, though not much of a trail if you want a long walk.
banthab0mb
Awesome!
Carol
Be sure to check out Cushings Museum while there.
James Lehman
Beautiful place to visit
Andy JM
Great views and a nice place to take a walk or have a picnic.
Bev Stevens
Very roomy and beautiful with plenty of seating! Good kite flying location. There are numerous benches and the parking area allows for a great view out onto the water. Open year round. There are bathrooms available in the summer and its wide open space allows for a lot of room to picnic wander or just lounge around in the sun. Parking can be tricky if you don't get there early but there is a good turnover so if you wait you should be able to park relatively soon. there are 3 different lawns. The main one usually has kite flying and Frisbee throwing.
Pat Canny
Great spot for families. Neat little light house and shipyard exhibit.
Paul Younis
There is a nice paved walking trail alongside the water. Great for catching a sunset.
Rory Platt
Great park, especially during the annual kite fest!
Erik Gerhard
Unique view of Portland harbor and nearby islands.
Stephanie marriner
I have visited Maine every year for the past 4 years. And every year I seem to find myself at Bug Light Park. My hubby and I love this park! It's absolutely beautiful, always dogs and Frisbees, laughing and great views to be had here!
Alecia Wenslow
I love flying kites at this park. Its right on the water so there's always a breeze and there's plenty of open space to run around. The lighthouse itself is small, but there are plenty of benches to sit and enjoy the view from.
Hali Morrison
BEAUTIFUL park. Felt like sitting in a postcard. Well maintained, perfect lawn, perfect scenery, people flying kites and the lovely ocean. Only issue I could see was a lack of trash cans, not sure if this is intentional or not? There are picnic tables and benches so it seems logical to me to have trash cans but there were none, we ended up taking all of our breakfast trash with us in the car. One thing I thought was impressive though was the lack of TRASH. Seems everyone else did the same thing we did, as I did not see one piece of trash anywhere in the park. It was nice to see that people actually care about keeping the park clean even when it wasn't exactly made easy. Really lovely place.
Stephen Arlaud
As you approach the lighthouse on the access road there is a parking lot straight ahead. If you turn right you will come to a parking lot right on the water free of charge. A walk towards the lighthouse you will come to a boardwalk with memorial plaques and a nice view of Portland working waterfront harbor. To the right you come to a granite breakwater out to the lighthouse. You can walk around the lighthouse on fenced breakwater out in the harbor. You have views of fort gorges and peaks island.
Ginina Vitucci
Go into the free museum on the road before getting to the light house and ask the women to give you a quick overview! It was great to have some background and context! Also, there is a neat model of a ship outside with some details on how Portland helped during the civil and world wars!
Ricardo DaSilva
Beautiful place to take pictures and picnic :)
Lilli T
Cute little light house. Visiting from Texas
Kathy Contarino
Cute little light house, nice walk, large granite steppers, nice view of Portland and Casco Bay. Large green space ideal for picnics. Awesome cool breeze, which was needed on such a hot day.
Roy Harper
Bug Light Park, named as such after the nickname for Portland Breakwater Lighthouse, is a great visit year around. The lighthouse itself features some Greek architecture and is still an active aid to navigation. The park is small with a small city feel to it. The views of Portland and her harbor are breathtaking. It's a good place for a leisurely stroll, a brisk walk or walking your leashed dog.
Sharon Bollinger
Such a unique story behind this location. A lot of history here!
Christopher Eling
lovely place on the water on a beautiful day
Sheyenne Sullivan
I went on a foggy and rainy day and it was still worth it!! Great place for photos !
Rachel Hinkley
Nice park and fun lighthouse. Great place to sit and relax for a while. Within close proximity to both Portland Headlight and Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse. Also a nice view of downtown Portland from here.
Chetan Dhadankar
Nice accessible lighthouse with a pretty Vista very close to Portland! Very bikable.
Michael Carannante
Beautiful views but they call it “Bug Light Park,” for a reason… BRING BUG SPRAY.
Kevin Ferguson
Wonderful park with a great view of Portland and Casco Bay. Well maintained walking path and benches to watch the boats and ships come and go out of Portland. The park is also a leader in organic maintenance techniques. Hosts events every so often like movie nights, a kite festival and Fourth of July fireworks.
Bert Berry
Very nice park, large open spaces, nice walking trails. The little lighthouse is a nice backdrop for photos with the family.
Adam Wetterhan
Small and relaxing green space by a small, appropriately named light house. Stop by the large ship hull sculpture to read an epic history of Portland's record pace ship building during WWII, including an interesting discussion of propaganda and gender roles in the workplace
K S
It’s a fun place to start a bike ride at
Janet Mageles
This is a great park for walks and picnics. It has wide spaces for flying kites. If your fancy is to play Pokemon Go, there are nine Pokéstops and three Gyms.
Alicia Bryer
Loved it been here a few times and every time I enjoy it. All around amazing views peaceful and for free it's a great way to spend time with yourself and or a loved one or just simply friends......
Jon Bartosh
Great park to enjoy the afternoon.
sandra samonte
Cutw little light house. See first before fort williams😊 …
Karen McClain
Beautiful view, and a beautiful park
Steven R. Schmidt
Pleasant open space on Portland Harbor, and the Liberty-ship memorial to boot!
Nate Lambson
Peaceful little park with some great views of Portland. Nice space to run around. Not a ton to do here and the facilities could use some attention but overall In glad we stopped by.
Andre Ricarte
One of the many light houses in Portland, the Bug Light is the smallest one of them. If it's not, if definitely seems like it. Unlike the other lighthouses, this doesn't tower over you.
The Bug Light is on the end of a wide open park where people and pets alike can enjoy the space with the cold breeze of the water.
After a small walk from the parking lot, you get to the Bug Light, take a couple photos and that's it. You can stay, relax, and enjoy the breeze.
Scott Bryant
Nice little park with great views. Someday they could add some more interactive devices to engage visitors
Ben Gerber
Very cool walking park with nearby parking, and of course, a lighthouse. The views are wonderful, access is easy. If you're looking to take a nice (probably breezy) stroll, this is the place.
Bob R
Great views of Portland
Patti St John
Beautiful views great big lawn space
Great place to look at the ocean day and night
But sadly you can not enjoy it at night
They don't allow it unless a ship is leaving port.....
Stephanie Rickett
Lovely place to see the boats come in as well as go for a walk. Very scenic with the lighthouse
Liseli P.
The park itself is small with quite a few benches and a bit of grassy area to sit. There are some picnic tables there. Great views.
James Holt
My wife and I love taking our dogs here. We live in central Maine and travel an hour each way just to come to this park a few times a year! Theres a paved path that goes around the outside edge right on the ocean. Theres a small lighthouse and plenty of benches to sit and watch the boats in the harbor. There is a huge field in the middle great for playing fetch with your dog.
George Barber
Sit at the base of the lighthouse and watch all the big and little ships go by. What a site/sight. Great for nice dogs as well. Always something new to see and feel. Reminds me why I came to Portland every time
James “Jim” Phillips
Long walk atop of breakwall for 7/8 mile each way. The lighthouse was not open to the public but many visitors made the hike to see it. Worth the effort.
Marie Pineo
Ome of our favorite haunts on a hot hot day is this beautiful piece of our area. Several lighthouse amd cove parks are near, so we can hop around and settle in or just take in all the people enjoying this pristine coastline treasure!
Crystal Goodrich
Bring your dog here for a great off leash time! Make sure to pick up after your dog and make sure he/she is well behaved. Complaints = the City taking away access for dogs! Throw out your trash, fly your kite, bring a picnic and enjoy the sailboats and lobster boats!
Ryan Jasinski
It's a park...with a mini lighthouse... I've seen bigger at mini golf. Maybe I just dont get the appeal but seeing it on so many top spot lists I was really let down. A Bud light would have been better.
Mary Carmack
Beautiful park for walking, games, enjoying the view of the water. You can hop on the Eastern Trail bike path on the South Portland side of the Casco Bay Bridge, and run or ride all the way to Bug Light Park avoiding roads.
Christie Jones
Loved this place. Very clean. Park benches spaced appropriately. Nice view of Bug Light Lighthouse and actually able to walk up to it and on it.
Brian K
Nice scenery with loop trail with benches and field. Needs handicap parking on left side near picnic tables.
Mike
Great park, clean, spacious, excellent views.
Jim Mohler
Bug Light sits at the end of the original breakwater protecting Portland Harbor. The light is functional but is no longer active as an aid to navigation. The original breakwater was about 2000 feet long an over the years the area east of the breakwater was filled in and the new land was set aside as Bug Light Park. The park provides an unobstructed view of Portland and, among other activities, is home to a Kite festival in the spring. The wind seems to blow all the time there and there are no trees or wires to interfere with the kites.
El Fraser
A beautiful and well maintained (clean) park with the smaller of two lighthouses on the South side of Casco Bay. Around the corner from the S. Portland Historical Society (free) Museum. Beautiful views of Portland and the bay.
John Hilfiker
Nice park with a great view of Portland. Bug light is a pretty cool spot to visit if you are looking to fly a kite, relax or just watch the water traffic coming in and out of the city.
Patricia Cory
We thoroughly enjoyed going to New England and photographing all the beautiful lighthouses. So much history behind each one.
Amelia Buchanan
Such a cute place! Amazing views, easy parking (the lot was crowded but seemed to turnover quickly). I was so glad we stopped to see Bug Light!
Bob Ber
Beautiful ocean views. Watch boats, fly a kite or take your dog for a walk. Wide open with plenty of space for everyone.
Mari Kocur
Beautiful place to walk around, fly a kite, or just admire the water. No bathrooms available though which was unfortunate.
Sapphirevived
Free parking but very small, the area is okay and the spot isn’t bad.
Auser 308
It was a great experience, you can have a picnic, sit on the rocks, and lots of other stuff, including swimming, but the water is a little dirty. All around, it was a great time.
Frank Mikolajczak
The park was cool at sunset and not very crowded. There are often people flying kites here throughout the day, so that is pretty cool.
barry gilliland

Nice park which has the light and a ww2 monument dedicated to building of liberty ships there.
Chris Southgate
Ok for a quick visit and to look back at the city but there's not much else to do here. If you only have time to visit 1 lighthouse/park Fort Williams 10 minutes to the south is a better choice.
Joseph S.
Cool park, families were making snowmen with all the snow on the open field.
Nick DeHaas
Bug light is one of my favorite places in the world. Big beautiful open space with an incredible view of Portland and right on the greenbelt so waking and biking to it is a breeze.

Very pretty little lighthouse. Definitely smaller than the headlight, but has more charm due to the design.
