Reviews of South Mountain Park and Preserve
Lonnie H
I love this specific park. It has a few different trails. The one I hike I wouldn’t necessarily say is good for bike riding because of all of the rocks but it is a nice place for an early morning hike while the air is still fresh. It is a pretty steep hike, but I love it. I’m not sure of the surrounding trails because I haven’t hiked them.. There’s quite a few people that hike this trail and area most of the time, so it’s not exactly lonely.. but I would recommend going with at least one friend because it does extend pretty far away from help if you needed it. If you had to scream even other hikers may not even hear you depending on the distance you were apart. Make sure to take plenty of water because the heat warms it up pretty quickly. I would recommend a thermos cup and a light backpack to carry your important items. The view is gorgeous and it’s so serene and peaceful on the trail and once you reach the top. Enjoy.

First time here and just stopped by because I was in the area. I wanted to take a look to see how dog friendly it was. Saw plenty of hikers with their fur babies and even a gentleman on his horse. Many different trails to choose from. Plenty of parking. I'll be returning to explore more with my pup. Whether you want to hike or mountain bike this is the place with beautiful scenery all around. I'm glad it's nearby where I live as I'll be frequenting here now to get my desert Zen.
Erik Thompson
Went on a Tuesday afternoon, pretty much had the mountain to self.
I'd say it's a moderate hike for an experienced beginner. Def not a 'walk in the park'.
It's inclination up is manageable for someone who used to put up 8 minute miles in gym class in middle school.
It's 1.3m up and I came straight bk, the way I came. You can make it a loop by connecting it with a national trail. I may sound intelligent, but that's just what the sign says up top.
If you could, can I would bring/make a hiking stick(s) for stabilization.
And download the map at the welcome post in the parking lot. To do this, your phone camera must have that feature to scan barcodes and what have you.
Or, download the 'All Trails' hiking app for your phone.

Amazing place to come and enjoy the sunset. Be sure to reach the gates by 7 because the entrance closes at that time. Me and my girls loved it. They had a blast and they're both under 3. This is Definitely a memorable experience.

South Mountain park is amazing! The hikes are so fun, but make sure to pack plenty of water! My wife and I ran out halfway through our home. The landscape is so pretty! I would always recommend going for a hike here!
Nushrat Humaira
there are many trails for hiking, some more difficult than others. It gets very hot here pretty quickly so bringing refreshments even for short walk is recommended. biking trails are indicated on map as well. lots of parking spaces on the way up the hill to the preserve.
Sarah
This mountain is worth visiting even if you only have a bit of time. There are plenty of trails to hike and get great views. You can also drive through and stop at multiple lookout points. I have not used all the trails but many of them have been easy to follow in standard active clothes. Definitely bring plenty of water, even if it isn't too hot, the temp will trick you. It is a great place to go for thought and mental clarity.
Daniel Nateras
South Mountain has everything you need to have a fun day on the mountain. If you want to have a picnic there are covered areas with grills. There’s lots of hiking trails and on this day I went up the Holbrook Trail which was a challenge with beautiful views. Along the way there are ancient pictographs which really give you a sense of how old this place really is. South Mountain can be chill to extremely challenging so make sure you are prepared and informed. All in all a great place to visit.
Pranav Sanghadia
South Mountain is the #1 place to hike with family and friends. There are hundreds of miles of trails that are easy, moderate and challenging for kids, young and old people. At every major trail head there are rest rooms, picnic tables and drinking water are made available by the park. The best part is that there is no entrance fees.
David Y.
I love this park! Such a large open area with several miles of different trailheads for every type of fitness level. I enjoy mountain biking here. Very busy at times but friendly people everywhere. Get out there!
Jodi Lytle
This is such a great place! It has three different lookouts Dobbin, Buena vista and Gila valley lookout, I recommend all three. Its a fun steep windy road to the top. It also has great hiking trails from really difficult to easy. At the entrance of the park there is an old abandoned structure called Scorpion Gulch, it's a historic building. It's free to enter the park and has alot to offer.
Jamilah Amirah
I enjoy hiking trails here so much. It’s a good mix of terrain from flat to stepping over larger boulders. The desert landscape is unmatched. Gorgeous views of boulders, desert flowers, and of course saguaro cacti. Most trails are easy to moderate but I understand that is all relative.
Kelligrace Hernandez
Absolutely breathtaking views. The traffic can be a little crazy and some people can’t drive up the winding roads but if you can get used to so many people going up here and causing a traffic jam it’s totally worth it. Easy hikes and great way to see the city. Plus there’s horseback riding at the base of the mountain.
samir Mahmoud
I really enjoyed the Holbert Trail to Dobbins Lookout hike. Some of the best views of the valley. The trail head has a ton of parking and isn't very busy. Only downside is that the Dobbins Lookout is packed due to all the people who drive up. There are restrooms at the top, but no running water. The hike is moderate/difficult with little to no shade during the hike.
Denise Porter
What I love most about South Mountain is the access to different trails. The views are beautiful. I didn't see any snakes, like people warned which was a plus for me! I also like that there were restroom facilities and sufficient signage to go to different lookout points.
Maria Hawk
Beautiful view and semi difficult hiking trails. Trails can be a bit confusing your first and second time so please pay attention to the way you go in bc you can get lost . Lol I did my first time going. Still an enjoyable hike and great for working or a relaxing nature hike
R U
I've only taken one of the drives and hiked maybe 3 or 4 separate trails, and every time it's like discovering something new!
Well preserved and maintained it is a beautiful area to see all sides of Phoenix
Looking forward to discovering more

Just was exploring regions near downtown Phoenix, and I came across this place. It’s a really good place, the paths are not that challenging. But do pack a lot of water before heading over to this place.
This place does have a good view of downtown Phoenix
Sonster B
Great Place to go exploring and hiking. Its big enough to get lost in a good way. Many places to discover like fat mans pass or the natural tunnel or just the critters of wild life.
no way
This place is unbelievable easy to hike, clean properly maintained manned, by officials even on a Sunday. This was one of the best experiences of my life. The pictures speak for themselves.
Priya Tarannum
Always a fun place to visit. So much to do & see. Scenic drive, cactuses, wildlife, hiking trails, mountain biking trails, covered picnic tables with grills & much more to enjoy.
Monica Botello
Nice park they have great trails for hiking and Ramada’s for picnics and party’s. They do have Park Rangers that drive around so I wouldn’t bring alcohol unless you bring cups. Nice spot for taking pics. You can rent horses and go horse back riding.

My recent visit to South Mountain Park Preserve was an absolute pleasure. The well-maintained and easy-to-navigate roads allowed us to bike for hours without worrying about getting lost or having any difficulty finding our way back. There is plenty of beautiful scenery throughout the park, with vast meadows and rolling hills that provide endless views of the mountains in the distance. We even got to spot some local wildlife while we were there! Not only was it a great way to get some exercise, but it was also a wonderful opportunity to take in the sights and sounds of nature. I cannot recommend this park enough; it's a great place to go for a day trip or even just an afternoon of outdoor activities!
Karan Sharma
Wonderful preserve with multiple scenic hikes for all fitness levels. Very close to the city. Could be crowded on weekends though.
Jenny
Really nice city view if you can hike a little
2Cher
Difficult to get to the top…constantly TRYING to pass bicycles, constant blind curves and steady double lines. Hikers were too frequently standing or hiking in the road on the blind side of the curve. At the beautiful viewpoint were people selling jewelry and snacks on the sidewalk and from a vehicle. Last but not least was the blasting mariachi music from a vacant open vehicle. The view was 5 star but everything else was a 0. Disappointing that it was so stressful and commercialized.
Melissa Shepard
Beautiful place to step away from the city for some peace and quiet. Great views of Phoenix!!
Amanda Werts
Fantastic views! Must-do on your list of driving scenic views. Beautiful out here. Didn't do any walking but the drive up to Dobbins Lookout is amazing.
Jason Mendoza
Great place for a lazy hike...or kick it up a notch to moderate. Lots of others there as well, but not too crowded.
Dave
Plenty of hiking trails to explore. Nature in it's splendor. Great views and photo opportunities. Pima Canyon trails are located in the Santa Catalina Mountains in Tucson, Arizona. There are countless trails to navigate. The Pima Canyon hiking trails in the South Mountain Park gives you a lot of variety. The Pima Canyon area hikes of the park range from easy to moderate. I hiked the moderate ones this time. Gorgeous skyline views. How much vegetation but plenty of cactus. Hike early in the morning and bring plenty of water.
Yolanda Rodriguez
So many trails for horses, hikers, bikers! Some trails have petroglyph, some have coyotes. Please be respectful to others using the trail with announcements that you are coming up from behind. Stay on trails. Don't take souvenirs. Do take dog poop back out with you. Remember plenty of water and consider an extra bottle for someone who may have run out. If you see something beautiful, take a picture, don't touch. Enjoy!
cletus claypin-macdonald
On the 5 star system this park rates 30 stars. Do not miss this attraction. First visitors might begin with the paved half mile tour with guideposts along the way describing flora and fauna to be expected in the desert. There you can see petroglyphs. In the summer months maybe take a ride up the mountain and enjoy spectacular views of nature or entire Phoenix to the north and Tempe to the east. There are mostly level hiking trails within a half mile from the entrance, trails up to and on the mountain.
Jake G
So much to see and do here, from hiking to stellar viewpoints. Come and hit the trails and stay to watch a spectacular sunset, but be ready for crowds. Bring water, there isn't a lot of shelter for shade here.
Nicholas K
I had a blast mountain biking and hiking here. The trails are steep, extremely chunky, and challenging. I rode Mormon to National trail and it was a heck of a climb and a hike a bike in several spots but the views and challenging terrain were totally worth it.
Biking: National trail is a great black diamond trail for advanced riders. Geronimo is an even crazier trail for advanced riders that will test your skill and focus. Javelina is a great blue trail for intermediate riders that is great for fitness and a longer descent. Make sure you bring plenty of water and your protective gear here. You will need it.
The park: I love this park, there are multiple places you can choose to park, including the top of the mountain trail heads or at the base to climb up. The desert landscape is beautiful and the views of the city are great. I can’t wait to come back here.
Jasmine Norris
Lots of hiking and mountain biking trails. Great place for some good sunset/sunrise pics. Bring lots of water as some of the trails are pretty decent walks. Many good parking spots to just sit, chill & blow some dro 😝 roads up the mountain close around 6. Beautiful place. All around. 10/10 would recommend. …
Elgin Carr
Excellent place for a quick day trip or a big event. Clean bathrooms and beautiful scenery.
Patty Laureano
They close Dobbins Point too often, and that’s the best spot of the entire reserve.
Adam Schroeder
It’s a great park with lots of trails and phenomenal views. If you’re driving up top, the parking options are severely limited, as you cannot park on the side of the road - even if there is plenty of room. It’s a popular park but not a lot you can do if you can’t find a parking spot. There are five lookout spots, but when we were here, two of them were closed. Dobbins and Buena Vista have bathrooms and nearby trails. We encountered a ton of bicyclists and unfortunately not many we saw were obeying traffic laws, or they were riding two abreast so you couldn’t pass them.
If you’re not driving, this is a solid spot for hiking. And the whole place is free.

such a beautiful spot. the drive is pretty far and scary but kind of worth it
Ceddric Williams
It was closed on the 4th Sunday... also, there was a rescue taking place... DON.T WAIT, HYDRATE!!!
Update... 😒I couldn.t give the park 5-stars only because I never made it to the top during two attempts... be sure to check the park hours (they close at 7pm.. so be there by 6p to enjoy the sunset!)
..and if you make it into the park, before you leave, make the right turn after the 2nd guard shack, you will travel to the big ramada which has an overlook to view the city... it a very nice, wish I could have fully enjoyed it... maybe I will try again.🤷♂️
2nd Update..!!!! DON.T MISS OUT! I finally made it on my third attempt before leaving AZ. Short on time but determined, I tried again... 😒😯😍 it was a winding drive up to the top with a a couple lookout points (one with a view both north and south sides of the mountian). I arrived at the top near the radio tower and the landscape of all the cities melt in to one gorgeous breathtaking spectacle view. Far as the eye can see with mountain peaks in.the distance...❤❤❤ when worth effort. Peaceful and soothing. The noise of the city melts away - timeless. The stone building is waiting to be explored and there it.s truly gorgeous as you peek down the hillside into a valley. Every once in awhile you.ll see planes taking off from Sky Harbor...I arrived around six and the began to set.. The sun shows many colors during golden hour TRULY BREATH TAKING!! It was one of the best sunset i.ve seen in my life!!! The city lights begin to appear as the transition from day to night magically takes place... beyond words. More people began to gather and everyone was quiet (yes, a special moment to witness). The cars below that didn.t arrive before the gates closed truly missed out.(i.ve been but please don.t give up...it.s truly worth it!!!) Memories for a lifetime... i.ve shared my experience with some locals that haven.t venture up there... I encourage them and anyone to see it... you.ll be amazed! Arrive by 5:45p - 6p be sure to get a spot. Tou will not regret it... I only leave my previous reviews because I know the frustration but that all melted away. NO REGRETS! IT.S TRULY BREATHTAKING and I got some of the best Arizona sunset pictures I could imagine. **Also, the park gates may close at 6:30p- 7p nit if you are in the park...you can peaceful enjoy the enjoying as long as you like... I found myself there until 9p!!! Time easily slipped away... and there is a second overlook down the hill called the Big Ramada... it.s truly a magical place and a god given beauty to behold. Please go and enjoy.. if this review encouraged you to do so and you made it to the top, please give this review a like.🤗it would mean a lot to me. (Thank you for reading...)

Awesome Authentic Arizona mountain, would reccomend to anyone looking for a genuine hiking experience. Just do not ignore precaution signs and bring plenty of water or equipment depending on the season.
Kris D
Beautiful park with excellent trails! Even for less experienced hikers :)
Jeremy Mitchell
I was only able to hike around for about an hour or so but the views during that short time were stunning. This is my first time to Phoenix and I have enjoyed it. Very glad I was able to get out and see the hills. also stumbled upon a random pair of red shoes...
Oscar Martinez
I love going to the top of the mountain and just hanging out with friends and family. Just the right to the top is awesome, the ride down is even better. I do this maybe like twice a month but we'll probably do it five times a month now
Yule Rage
This place is gorgeous at sunset! My photos were taken at the Mormon Trailhead. I had a very memorable and positive hike - It’s not an easy one though. There’s lots of steep, slick stretches that are just begging for you to fall down, so if you come, be extra careful with your footing!
Kevin Kirby
Great place to visit with panoramic views of Phoenix and surrounding areas. Native Americans are usually at Dobbins lookout offering a variety of beautiful jewelry and other art.
Steve
There's a couple trails that go around and we wanted to go up so we did and ran into a trail further up that we could get over to the cliff to rest in the shade.
Great views, traffic can be a little heavy on 35ths
Yetunde O.
My first time hiking. OMG...my quads and hamstring were screaming 😱
Karin Klose
We stopped in first at the Environmental Education Center, where we received great info on which lookouts were open, and trails available throughout the park. Found ample parking in the big Dobbins lot, but very limited parking at Buena Vista. Recommend going to BV early. Very nice trails from BV lot, which allowed view to the south. Afterwards, went back to EEC (where there was still hardly anybody there! Empty parking lot next to building!) and took our time reading great exhibits, getting more info from friendly guide, walking to nearby petroglyphs, and snacking at picnic tables. Hope to go back and hike more.
Tammy Slocum
We hiked Mormon Trail to Hidden Valley Trail and through Fat Man's Pass. The first part was tough because it was a steep elevation gain but it got easier at the top and was well worth it. We are in our 50s and we are active but I would not say we are especially fit. The trail is clean, well marked, and the views of Phoenix and Tempe are gorgeous! It took us a few hours to complete. There were other hikers (all ages and some with dogs) and mountain bikers but not so many that we didn't get to proceed at our own pace. Beautiful trail!! Will definitely do it again.
Shivaya Gurave
Undeniably a wonderful neighborhood park but not a destination for hiking, not as beautiful, interesting and challenging as North Mountain Park. I would love having this in my neighborhood but certainly not worth driving from Mesa.
Chris Woodard
New views from the Loop 202. Saw a structure from the freeway and hiked the area and found a very cool old building and bee hive in a wash area! Great hike, beautiful scenery looking West toward the Estrella Mountains.
Bree Ayala
Such a beautiful place. So many different places to park. Lower and high levels. Nice trails and clean
Edith Levy
There are trails for everyone here. If an easy-does-it is your speed, try the Desert Classic MTB Loop. Most of the trails rank in the "moderate" range, but one stands out in the "hard" category and that is the Holbert Trail. The first half mile of this trail is pretty easy going. After that it mostly look like the attached photo. The view at the top though...priceless!!!
Rob the Foodie
Plenty of room for social distancing great 👍 please for a short walk or a long hike 🚶♂️ you can also rent a horse or bike along the many trails …
Paula Andreoli
Had a nice but TOO SLOW OF A RIDE. Felt like I was on one of those kids rides in a pen going in a circle. Very beautiful scenery, Im just a more advanced rider for that type of ride.
Josie Flores
Love the different views I can see from the mountain top, including a few heights. Day & night is amazing, the sunset colors create different awes! My parents would bring me as a baby, & I brought my kiddos as well!
Amanda Kuroda
This was my first hike in Phoenix, and the views were absolutely amazing! I'm not too experienced of a hiker, but this trail was not too difficult. I'd consider it moderate. The trail is clearly labeled, but I did veer off trail for a little bit. I got a little too off trail and ended up doing more climbing than I expected. So, as long as you don't do that there is no climbing necessary. The trail is also dog friendly.
Frederick Nielson
I visited the area in February and again in May of 2019. On each occasion I went for a night hike and trail run. 14-15 miles in length, this rolling series of trails offers some great views at sunset. It is the Southwest region so watch out for snakes and scorpions.
Bring your own water. There are no bathrooms located anywhere along the trail
Some of the trails are gentle and rolling and others steep and require some high stepping and climbing. Young children accompanied by and adult would do fine as long as the adult is in shape and ready to help them out.
Views of the city from the summit are great at night.
Kaylene McCannon
South Mountain is a beautiful place to go and get away from everything for awhile. There’s a lot to hike, plenty to see, and the wildlife is abundant. I love to go and watch the sunset and it is easily a photographer’s dream. Breathtaking view of Phoenix, and I feel like it really comes alive at night. The stars are clearer and it’s a wonderful place to go and clear your head. They’ve got plenty of places to sit up there, so you can bring breakfast/lunch/dinner and have an easy picnic. I highly recommend taking out of state guests here!
Katie Broyles
This was such a beautiful hike. I went in mid-March in the morning and wether and temperatures we're perfect. Trails are easy to navigate, though at some points feel narrow.
Definitely pack sunscreen for yourself, and keep yourself cool by dressing in layers if the hike starts off with cooler temperatures (I shed my jacket about halfway into the hike)
I would not recommend this hike to a beginner though, so bring good shoes and plenty of water.
Greg Rosenberg
I hiked Holbert Trail to Dobbins Lookout on South Mountain when I was in Phoenix in February. The trail has a good mix of flats and incline. At the time, you get a great view of the city. While I enjoy the hike, it wasn't as scenic has other trails I did on this trip. If I had to choose between here or Papago Park, PP is much scenic in my opinion.
L Gaxiola
Try the numerous trails and interesting zones, such as 'The Lost Ranch' ruins, Max Delta Mine ruins (abandoned), 'Fat Man's Pass, Hidden Valley Natural Tunnel, and Mystery Castle. Watch for coyotes (the animals, not the human smugglers) en route to Dobbins Lookout. Test your might or die trying on the hardcore trails. Learn the lore at the on-site educational center. Claim to discover ancient petroglyphs like you're Columbus. Get stuck, rescued, and fined by Phoenix Fire Dept. for trying to fit through Fat Man's Pass. If you're vain and pretentious, you can always pose at Scorpion Gulch for your precious social gram post. Crush an innocent horse's back at Ponderosa Stables. Lance Armstrong-it as you bike to the broadcast towers. Camelback nothing. This is THE mountain.
Michael Del Rosario
I recently did a photo hike at South Mountain and it is such a magnificent and pristine place. However, It is also a very hot and dry place. Do not overestimate it. Bring water, sunscreen, and an abundance of precaution. But most of all, pace yourself and have fun.
South Mountain has many roads, trails, and hikes to match anyone's activity level. If you were there last week, I was the one with the SLR and the tripod looking like a fish out of water. For one. I had the wrong shoes on
For another, this was my second ever photo hike and I was still learning my equipment. But aside from that, as I traipsed up the mountain and balanced my tripod on the rocky ground, I really had fun finding shots.
Though overlooked by tourists (most preferring the Grand Canyon, Sedon, and the like, really who wouldn't), this place is worth a try. Really, check this place out.
Mason Lussier
It is an amazing park with tons of things to do from horseback riding to hiking to mountain biking. This is the outdoor lovers place to be. The weather right now is amazing too so its perfect time to hike to see those beautiful mornings or come at night and see the city lit up from up on Dobbins Lookout. Very beautiful park too so lets keep it clean and looking beautiful!
T B (Gypsy)
Great place to take the family, gf, or wife. The park is open to the public. There are several places to see the sunsets. Hiking is common. They also have picnic areas.
Linda Llanas
Great drive if you are not scared of heights. Had to have my hubby take me and my family who I was visiting up. 2 shifts of people. The view is fabulous. You can even sit on the edge (which i couldn't even go near). Even can stop off at little scenic area.
Ben Gilmore
After recently moving to the Phoenix area, this was my second trip to South Mountain. Looking at South Mountain Park on Google Maps, you'll find a massive network of hiking and biking trails. One of the most accessible and scenic routes is Mormon Trail to Hidden Valley. Starting out at the trail head, Mormon Trail begins an immediate climb which allows for some spectacular views of the city. While hiking by myself, i was quiet enough to see some wild life that I would have missed otherwise. A red tailed lizard, hummingbirds, chipmunks, rabbit, and tiny lizards that scurried away in the blink of an eye. Mormon trail is pretty and I clicked off photos but entering Hidden Valley was amazing. This is the place to take your time and soak it all in. The caves and rock here are quite the surprise and once out of the cave area, you'll see why it's called Hidden Valley. It's hard to reconcile the natural untouched beauty so close to the city.
Tim Krimmel
Beautiful views, nature, quiet, peaceful, and hot. It was close to 108 degrees when I went, which can be a little dangerous for hiking. You can hear and see lots of little birds, lizards, and other unseen animals rustling in the bushes as you walk by.
Nesha
Great place to hike ! Moderate to difficult hiking depending on your fitness level. About 4 miles with a steady climb up for 1.5 miles. Can bring a dog🐶. I recommend plenty of water 2 liters and couple of healthy snacks. There are plenty of other hikers on the trail, but i recommend going with a friend. Early in the morning is the perfect time to hike during cooler months. It's free and parking is free but limited.

Absolutely, spectacular living environment of a desert ecosystem, with magnificent panoramic vista's of the natural beauty of the surrounding area.
Including distant illuminated sights of majestic city of Phoenix.
An absolute must visit. 😎🤙💜💙💜

We just went for a drive here and got out for a somewhat short walk, but it was very nice. We definitely want to go back and try more of the trails. The ride on Summit Road was beautiful, nice view overlooking the Phoenix metro area and the road was curvy as it wound up the mountain. They have qr codes that you can scan on the trail, well I saw at least one, that shows what your coordinates are which I thought was nice. There were reminders of precautions to take while hiking (getting enough water, etc). The short walk we went on took us through rocky areas you could climb on. We had expected to pay for parking but where we went, we didn't encounter any paid parking. We stopped by Dobbins Lookout, there were a lot of people there so we didn't get out of the car. Can't wait to visit again and try another trail.

Mothers Day hike. My daughters , 3 absolutely BEAUTIFUL and best daughter that a mother can ever dream. Now they are unbelievable dedicated mothers. I'm so proud of them.
Our new tradition if going on mothers day to do a special hike. South Mountain have the best views and the weather was perfect. Feel blessed to be able to do it with my them.
Highly recommend ♡♡♡

So many great hiking options at South Mtn Park! Over 100 miles of trails so you won’t get bored! I use the All Trails app and can find dozens of options, based on the distance, elevation change and degree of difficulty.
Most of these trails are wide and groomed to accommodate for foot and bike traffic. They are dog-friendly but dogs must be leashed. Beautiful 180 degree views from the top of South Mountain! I’m so glad to have this free park close to home!
Arely
The hike is definitely something to experience in this wonderful fall weather! The hike is not too hard, my little brother finished before me, and the view was worth it. It's a fun and intermediate hike. About a mile to and from and recommend drinks, a hat, and sunglasses if it's sunny.
Tyler Burns
Love that you can drive right up and see all of the city from here. Really cool at sunset and to see all the city lights turn on once it’s dark.
Breanne Reith
Great spot for a hike - several trails ranging in difficulty. Amazing views of the city from Dobbins Lookout. We also stopped by the old Max Delta Mine on our way out. Not much is left but it's still neat to see. Great park with lots of things to do. We will definitely be back!
**You can drive to most of the lookout spots if you are unable to hike.

My first time hiking in the desert! We hiked Holbert trail to Dobbins Lookout. We went on a weekday late morning and it was 98-99 degrees, but we had quite a bit of the trail to ourselves. We saw rabbits, squirrels, quail, roadrunner, and chuckwalla lizards as well as the plants of the desert. The hike was moderately challenging and worth the views of Phoenix and the other mountain ranges.
Matthew Ford (Mford015)
Omg wow, a great hang out place and wild rocks to climb. The rock mountain locations are so cool and are great for interesting pictures.
sadie lopez
There's many trails to hit. So if you enjoy the outdoors check the difficulty levels of the many trails. Take plenty of water and don't forget to pick up after your dogs.
Tariq M Nasim
It's an excellent place for hiking. You can also come here riding a bicycle or driving your car all the way to the top of Dobbin's Lookout. The view from the top is very beautiful. Many places around is easily noticable from the top.. Downtown Phoenix, PHX Airport, Scottsdale, Camelback Mountain everything.
Don't forget to bring bottle of water if you plan to hike.
Melissa Gabrielle
Great place to visit. The entrance closes at 7pm, and the drive is about 10 minutes to the top. Completely worth it. Weekends, and cool evenings can be packed for parking. The space is large and open so it never seems too crowded. I'd recommend pants and closed toes shoes but I have gone in shorts and sandles plenty of times.
Many look outs for sunsets, and sunrises.
Leslie Davis
A one hour hike with friend. We frequent South Mountain Park a few times a month. Great trail system.
chaithanya kompella
Truly spectacular experience! The overlook of entire valley view is amazing and memorable. We saw few lizards and baby scorpions on the trails.
caleb rice
We hiked South mountain off of 48th street and Elliot. It's a great hike for young children, the terrain is not rough and elevation is gradual for kids that are still finding their footing. If you want somewhat of a challenge don't walk the main trail. There are plenty of trails that go deeper into the mountain range where the terrain can get steep.
Deanna Rodriguez
Love the scenery!! Nothing says good morning like the crisp mountain breeze on an early morning hike
Jaqueline Herrer
Pretty safe trails to follow, alot of backpackers and hikers frequent the main routes. Be sure to take enough water to hydrate and come with a fully charged phone if planning to hike!
Lisha
Always an enjoyable hike or mtn bike ride in the park.
Braden Chrestensen
Great place to hike and get out doors. The trail itself is kinda rocky and there are some steep spots but there is great scenery with many different routes to take according to your skill level I highly recommend getting out and seeing it for yourself
Philemon Spencer
Beautiful place to take a hike! We are so glad somebody had the foresight to plan this park in Phoenix's early days. It is so accessible with several different entrances, and the miles of trails give you new options over and over again!
Karen Hernandez
It's always nice to to hike and there's multiple trails and entry points. Make sure you take enough water and wear good shoes. If you plan it right the sunsets or sunrise are beautiful from a top. It took us about an hour going up if we dont stop to enjoys scenery. This time we had a child and a dog do it was about 2hrs but taking breaks and stopping to climb and take pictures on the boulders.
Devon Mills
Fantastic place. Biked around for an hour and it was love at first ride.
J. Cheung
Loads of trails in varying difficulties with plenty of parking. I’d suggest choosing a trail prior as there are lots of starting points. Bring water and snacks and bring an extra shirt just in case. Beautiful sweeping views
Kari Infantino
A little dusty out here yesterday but the views are amazing. Horses were on the path at Pima Canyon at South Mountain one of the largest city parks in the US at 17,000 acres. I always tend to take the main path all the way up to the Stonehouse it's easy gently slopes all the way to the top and you don't even realize that you have climbed so high. A great height for the family it's less than 3 miles round-trip from the base of the Mountain at the parking lot.
David A.
Gorgeous views! Well worth the drive up here.
Thomas S. Painter
Incredible dessert hike/walk .... walked up along the first ridge and then down to Lost Ranch (4 mile loop).
It was beautiful, the tail end of the bloom!
Ghandric
The park is a lovely place for some great photo opportunities as well as a great workout. Whenever I'm out in Phoenix for business, I make an effort to visit the park as it's a nice place to get away, fairly quiet and the people are typically very well mannered and are there to enjoy the sights just as you are. Dobbin's Lookout is one of the main attractions and vantage points that you'll want to visit on a clear to moderately-clear day.
I'd definitely recommend bringing some extra water just in case you decide to walk around a bit and remember to protect your skin as it's pretty easy to burn in the bright sun (coming from personal experience on my first visit up there).
Take your time on the way up as the roads have some sharper hairpin turns. When you get to the top you'll see it was well worth the time and effort.
Daniel Cooper
One of the biggest municipal parks in the nation. Great trails of multiple lengths and difficulty. Great down hills for mountain bikes and great hiking and trail running opportunities. Hard to get bored of and great sunrises.
Milk
Absolutey beautiful. Bring some friends and go hiking here and you're guaranteed to have a great time for free.
Vanessa Moreno
Very well kept up bathrooms were clean had toilet paper great place for a big gathering
mike teller
Nice afternoon journey walk and sight seeing at, lookout are amazing view.
jone
A nice hiking or bike riding , walking trip. Even just a nice drive through and stop to eat on a bench or Ramada place. Hikes range from hard to flat . Nice scenic views throughout the whole area. Butterflies were everywhere this time was a great little day trip . We go as much as we can being as it’s not a far drive from our home.
Brian Redd
I have visited South Mountain Park and Preserve several times. It is full of amenities, hiking & mountain biking trails, and view points. I LOVED the view points. There is a paved road that goes to the top and allows you to overlook Phoenix. I highly recommend taking the drive! Quick tip: the preserve is over 16,000 acres! Download the app, Avem, to help you find South Mountain amenities.
Kona Honzzo
I live right off the park, more of a preserve. Know as the largest municipal park in N. America. It is over 16,000 acres. I mountain bike this park almost daily. Some of the best desert riding and hiking there is with endless amounts of trails at all levels.
Amanda Lovell
There were definitely some pretty views. There weren't many places to go off trail that were worth it and there were quite a few people on this trail. I typically like to hike alone so this was a bit off-putting for me. However the views of the city were gorgeous and it would be somewhere I might go again.
Pavan Ankem
Lot of nice trails to hike on .. my favorite are the national - Mormon trail and the Kiwanis trail .very well maintained park . The Dobbins lookout is a awesome view point to see the whole city .
Lonna Antonson
Nice drive. Some curves are hard to see around so definitely drive with caution. Love all the look out spots. Beautiful during the day or night!!
Tyler Conaway
Amazing trails nestled in the heart of Phoenix. There’s a wide variety of difficulty levels to suit anyone’s needs. Highly recommend climbing up to the various lookout spots for inspiring views of the city. Dog friendly with lots of fur friends on the trails. Limited restrooms so plan ahead there and bring plenty of water.
Shawn Surma
Amazing views. Great access via the roads. But plenty of hiking trails.
shayna maracle
So many different trails to take of all different lengths great for all us different individuals. Very knowledgeable staff working at the visitor center and not too mention so very friendly. Will be back for sure.
Theresa Fogle
Easy, moderate, difficult—it’s whatever hike you desire—Telegraph Pass, Desert Classic, and National Trail with its recently renovated Pima Canyon trailhead facilities are just a few. Weekends get crowded so plan accordingly.
Brand Inlow
A must see/do in Phoenix. Views are great and the road is fun to drive. Many years ago I did a trail ride up at dusk from stables at bottom. Evening views are special.
Krista Sparks-Kern
Went on the Bursea trail. Very nice and easy. Beautiful in February. All the rains had lent a hand at helping the flowers bloom.
Eli Robinson
Open swath of desert with clearly marked and well maintained trails that wind up the mountain. The immediate view changes continuously while the horizon opens to show new perspectives of Ahwatukee, Chandler, and other surrounding areas. It's a nice Sonoran desert immersion.
Strengthlab Jerrod Maguire
I've been riding Desert Classic, as well as other great trails out here on South Mountain for 20 years. I've been on every bike imaginable except for maybe a unicycle, although I did see someone riding one out here once. I love South Mountain and would rather ride no where else. And yes, I love the heat!
Robert and Melissa Quirk
Great drive up to scenic overlook and view at sunset.
Great place to get pics with saguara cactuses.
Taylor Truesdell
Bring lots of water and watch your footing! This park has smooth dirt trails as well as trails that are steep with jagged rocks everywhere. Very cool to see the riparian ecosystem at work with the washes everywhere. Porta-potty style bathrooms are at most major trailheads but once you start out you are on your own.
Arely Barbosa
This place is great! It's perfect for a solo hike or a family outing. They have different trails for your level of comfort and even picnic areas for lunch time. You could easily go hiking on a day trip here. If you get to the top you will enjoy a great view of Phoenix. They also have an Enviromental Education center in the park.
I recommend hiking up to Dobbins lookout 👍
Michael Thomason
Wow, what a beautiful place. It's like being outside in the wilderness with a picture size window look at the city. Not just one but all the valley cities with Phoenix right in the center. You can watch airplanes take off and land, you can see Camelback and mummy mountain. You can see why they named the mountain the white tanks. Looking to the north east you can even see the Arizona license plate in real life as you marvel at the 4 peaks. After all the tranquility and photos you realize I have a hike ahead of me. The trails are for everyone from beginners to advanced. I started with a beginner one mile jaunt that was challenging yet fun with more of that tranquility. Next time I'll stretch myself further into the great city escape right under it's nose.
Cody Fincher
Today was as pretty as I've ever seen South Mountain. Green, green, green, thanks to the rain recently. Not too busy yet either. Wife and I hiked Kiwanis Trail which was a little over two miles.
Joshua Whitmore
First hike in 10 years after back surgery! Is this heaven? I took the Kiwanus trail up to the stone gazebo across the highway. Enough for today, but I will be back!
Ahtionah Ditzer
Great views, the road has many curves and is really narrow. Be cautious when driving, a lot of people were going too fast and the corners are sharp so couldn't see oncoming traffic. We went on Sunday around noon, not many people present. Sometimes they have food/jewelry vendors on the summit. It was a nice experience with my family.
Beverly Youngren
Largest preserve in US!! Hike or drive to explore this very special area. Our hiking group explored day after rains...spectacular views
Jacob
A nice hiking place. Its very beautiful but compared to McDowell, the crowds are a lot bigger. Don't expect to be there alone. It was raining, too, when we went but that didn't stop anyone. Really an awesome place, though.
Bearded Traveler
I have to say this is a fun place if you want to get your hike on, but your not to serious of a hiker. I love the view nice easy stroll of a hike and some very nice spots for pictures.
Pratik Bhagwat
Amazing cityscape. Best to see Phoenix at night!
Do watch Dobbin's overlook. Park entry closes by 7pm,but you can hang around till 11pm (confirmed from park ranger)
Captain's Wife Log
Very exciting experience to be able to coyote watch while hiking. Loved the experience! Amazing views!
Saundra Metelits
Amazing place to hike or just get away from everything. They have pavilions that have outlets to charge your phones and there are many awesome spots. They have one area, I'll attach a picture, it looks like a fairy tale. Love this place!!!
Brian Mcdonald
Super fun to visit. Beautiful. 5.5 miles up paved road. Watch for bicyclists , skateboarders and motorcycles. Robbins lookout is a must
Road Travel Vlogs
I like this mountain! It's busy there and many people like to go biking, hiking, riding horses, bbq, etc. It's beautiful, nice view.
Selina (Sphynxee)
Great hiking trail that leads into many other trails, so you can hike for hours it feels so endless. We did about 7.8km in 2 hours (we managed to get a bit lost). Its very open, not very high and for the most part flat terrain that's easy to walk along. It being in phoenix it's much hotter, and there is no shade so come prepared with lots of water, sunscreen and comfortable hiking shoes. You do share the trail with bikes so be cautious. Enjoyable none the less!
Michael Arellano
Started out at Buena Vista trailhead and made our way to Hidden Valley and Fat Man's Pass. Just an awesome place to hike and an easy to moderate trail at about 3.5 miles round-trip. This is the Arizona desert, bring water.
Mikhail Voskolovich
There are several really nice trailheads in the area depending on the intensity you're looking for. The views are fantastic - I highly recommend this area for hiking or just a quick getaway away from the city. There's a lot to discover in each visit to keep you coming back for something new every time and in different light.
Steffanie Gates
On my visit to Phoenix, I was told by a friend to cycle South Mountain, and I just happened to go on a Sunday morning, when it is closed to motorists. The views were spectacular and it was blissful to be able to cycle without worry of cars behind me.
Joseph Gumeny
Half the roads are shut down. Great hiking trails but kind of confusing. Awesome views from the top. Too bad there are a#**oles that leave trash in such a beautiful place.
Krstafer Pinkerton
This is by far the best hiking in Phoenix Arizona. It is centrally located even though it’s the South mountain. This trail is open 24/7. There are lots of coyotes and javelina that live in this region. Be sure to be cautious of the many varieties of cacti here. Having some duct tape with you will help remove cactus spines.
Chamal Mediwaka
Trails lead to the best place to watch a sunset in town. Take flashlights if you are hiking back at night
Mike Nelson
We've lived below south mountain for several years and went up the mountain for the first time. The sights are amazing and you can catch some amazing sunsets. I've submitted a few here and recommend it.
***Please know the gate to park looks to open around 5AM and closes at 7pm. If you're in the park prior to the gate closing the look out points had times listed open until 11pm. ***
karisma doughty
This is a very beautiful place for walking/hiking/biking/communing with nature etc.
Samuel Hanes
Great park with several trails available- one of which is the Holbert pass that allows you to get to Dobbins Lookout. Plenty of trails ranging from easy to moderate to hard at various lengths. Trails are well-groomed, too.
Jim McDonald
Great place for an encompassing view of the valley. Narrow, twisty road to the overlook, but worth the drive.
Limited parking, especially at sunset.
Roger Shriner
Sunrise hike (on a whim - I live a couple miles away) on Sunday 10-14-18. It was beautiful, and caught a rare glimpse of some mountain crawling clouds.
Amirreza Sahami
Beautiful place. I really liked it. However, the peak was so crowded. If you go to the peak on a weekend, you probably won’t be able to enjoy the silence of the mountains. Also, the signs on the road are not easy to read. Be careful not to lose directions.
Terry & Corinne Lattimer
Great hiking and beautiful views. Lots of trails of varying difficulty and interesting sites along the way. Opportunities for wonderful nature photo shots. Be sure to look for the petroglyphs.
john capuano
This place is great if you've got 30 minutes or 6 hours. Nice and challenging, though there is more introductory stuff as well. I've been time and time again and love it.
Psychic Roni
Beautiful view of the city! Love how the Native Americans sell their handmade jewelry! I love the plaque that shows you where different mountains are located.
Mike Benge
Pima canyon has plenty of parking, several handicapped spots, and side parking all the to the golf course. Accessible restrooms and the trailer is wide and semi doable in a manual wheelchair.
Samuel Smith
Beautiful views of the Phoenix valley, interesting geology, and trails with varying difficulty and length make this a worthy destination for hikers and mountain bikers. Heed the trail warnings and bring plenty of water as it will be dry, and hot most of the year.
Wendy Forman
This place is just beautiful! Great views and hiking trail is good for those of us who do not like it too steep!
renee corbin
A great place to take family and pets. There is hiking trails of different difficulties. Lots of fresh air and Sun. Go enjoy.
stacy merritt
Beautiful spot with lots of different hikes and lookout points. The jewelry vendors in the parking lot were sweet and not at all pushy. Loved our time up there. We'll be going back on our next trip, for sure.
Bernard Hope
Very challenging hikes, enjoyable fellow hikers along the trail
AzGeoDad Phoenix
Dobbins Point is a great place to take out-of-town visitors to see the great valley of the sun.
Enter from the north on Central Avenue and drive up to the point.
Timotheus Walker
A wonderful place to hike and bring your family for a picnic or a short hike. Maybe just to overlook the valley and have peace and quietness.
Hector Roman
Can't bit the view of Phoenix from South Mountain Park. Great place for family and spend the day during the cooler months of the year. Multiple trails to hike and amaizing view points. Depending your hike, you can have a 360 view of tge city. If you are not a hiker, ypu can drive to the top and enjoy the view as well. Also there are horseback riding and picnic areas.
Philip Britten
Awesome place. Went to drive up to dobbins lookout for the view of phoenix but I didn't research about the silent sundays when it is closed to cars. Instead took a quick look around and fairly quickly and easily stumbled up some rocks and surprisingly reached this high up point for a nice photo. Also a nice view of city 90° to the right of this angle. Wasn't equipped for a full hike but definitely coming back for that, lots of rocks to climb, might be a favorite park!
Shawna Johnson
The view is always breath taking for me. The birthday girl is my niece. Happy 26th. We enjoyed the view until the sun completely set.
Brandon Voltzke
I live in MN. I've been to South Mountain Park only for road cycling. It's excellent for hill repeats. Parking is free at the bottom. Ride up to split and take a right on San Juan and follow down for a few miles. At dead-end, turn back at start climbing then at the split start the climb to the towers. After the towers, descend back to the main climb and climb to the lookout. Descend back to the San Juan split and repeat.
Sergio Studdard
An enormous park, with tons of biking, hiking, and horse riding opportunities awaiting you. Like most desert trails, there is little to no shade on the majority of trails here, so that's something to keep in mind before setting out on a hike here.
Due to the size of this park, crowds are minimal unless you're going to a more scenic area with parking such as Dobbins Lookout, such can be quite crowded in the evenings right before and at sunset.
There is much to explore here, and most trails are easy to moderately difficult.
If I had to recommend a couple places here to visit, Dobbins Lookout and Fat Man's Pass would be at the top of the list.
Katlin1000rr Hammond
This is a very beautiful place to visit. The view are absolutely gorgeous and breathtaking! The winding roads go up the mountain and are very fun. There are lots of hiking trails and also a horse farm that you can rent horses and ride the trails. From the top you can see all of Phoenix. There is also another road that goes to the South side of the mountain and you can see another smaller town. There is a limited amount of parking at the top but there is enough. This park is my favorite in Phoenix and I definitely recommend seeing it if your on vacation out here!
Tonya Boyd
Very pretty. Nice place to visit. Didn't get to go hiking but drove around and there are beautiful views
Steve Gratkins
South Mountain is great. For me it is close to home about a 30 minute drive. The parking is free, you can ride a mountain bike, hike, and take your dogs. This park has easy to moderate trails that are well traveled. If you want to get lost in the outdoors for a few hours it is easy to do, in the heart of Phoenix. In summary I would suggest going to South Mountain.
Will Bobbitt
A warm and breezy day. Don't delude yourself into thinking there will be shade because that's really unlikely. Water is your best friend...that and a boony hat.
Aidan
South mountain has some of the best mountain biking in arizona and is a must hit place if youre in to mountain biking. The trails can be very technical so it's not exactly a great place to learn, try desert classic if your not experienced, but if your in to technical difficult climbing and intense descents then it is the place for you. The lost popular trail being climbing from the pima canyon trail head up mormon trail and descending the national trail. This part of national is the most downhill part and can be alot so don't do it fast blind unless you are very experienced. Another spot I love hitting is the beverly canyon trail and the east loop.
James Mc
The more I explore this place the not beauty I find. It's amazing having something like this so close to go to.
Gypsy Lizzard
The South Mountain National Park has plenty of means of recreational uses from hiking to mountain trails for horses and bicyclers on and off road kind.
You can gaze out across Phoenix " The Valley of the Sun" from end to end.
There's two major lookout points up at the crest of the mountain, you can drive up to or hike up from either way. Also two on the south side of the mountain. As it looks over the Gila River Tribal Nations Indian Reservation and also towards the southern most part of the Phoenix Valley. Also you get a closeer look at the enormous south western moutain peaks called The Estrella Mountains.
A good place to watch the sunrise, or sunset and the see the city lights awaken at night for as the moonlight nights only just enhance you viewing pleasure.
Walid Nabhane
Very nice big mountain reserve where there are plenty of trails and roads for all types of biking, hiking, and horseback riding. Avoid 9AM to 5PM in summer. Best 6-9AM. Great views of both valleys on each side of the mountain.
Hannah Borrego
A beautiful place to hike! There are multiple trails so make sure you know which one you're on and where it leads to. As with any trail, read the maps and regulations for the "do's and dont's." We went just in time to catch the sun set.
James Nightshade
Most of the place is great, but unfortunately, do to the access by car to the top, the top is ruined by crowds, broken bottles, litter, vendors, and vendors honking horns to get your attention.
Delu Taco
If you’re new to photography, and not much of a hiker, I highly recommend heading up to the mountain top for spectacular views overlooking the city.
I don’t know of many places where you can simply drive for a view like this.
Amanda Roop
Great hiking/ biking trails. With wonderful view of Phoenix and Tempe. Lots of wildlife. We saw and heard coyotes. Great place to see a wide variety of vegetation if the area. If you look closely I posted a picture of a cyote :)
Vicki Erickson
Beautiful hiking trails, for miles. Good for hiking and Mountain biking. Highly recommend.
Rachel Joye
I love going to South mountain park. This is a great place to take your kids or visitors. There are plenty of places to see the vistas of the valley without getting out of your car. And there are short and long walking trails for every level. I like to take people there who have never been to the valley before it's a great way to see the desert. See pictures here are looking North into the City of Phoenix.
Dan Fields (The Ride Abides)
Awesome mountain biking! National Trail is very technical and super fun. Not for beginners. Desert Classic is easy xc trail. Look at Trail maps (or trailforks app) for details on all trails. Lots on this mountain!
BRIAN ROSE
Excellent hiking trails. Bathrooms available. Very amazing scenery of the city scape.
Taylor Miller
I love this hike, and the views at the top are to die for. It's a fairly easy hike to do with family, and there aren't any steep drop offs to worry about. Great way to get in some exercise and bonding on what would be otherwise a lazy afternoon.
Astxrism
Great place to go hiking up in the mountains the atmosphere was cool air breezing through and the smell of rain coming through too it's a very lovely place to go hiking, camping, party and etc. They even allow animals like dogs and horses. I just loved the mountains and my family loved it to just a great place to visit over the weekend or vacation
Tara Wenzel
So many good trails to hike. Definetly a must see! Its right by the city, but once you hike into the mountains, you cant hear all the city bustle. Thats what I like about it.
Laura Chevreaux
Great place to get some fresh air. Parking can be tight but that's for anywhere in Phoenix that days that I'd popular.
Abraham Acosta
Love the place. I just don't care for the smell of weed out there, hard to bring kids here and have them around.
kyle elworthy
Amazing views, easy to get to -well worth the trip
Hannah Bercovici
South Mountain is the largest city park in the country, and you can tell. I've hiked here for almost four years now and haven't even touched on the vast amounts of trails. You definitely need to have an app like Trailforks to help guide you through the tangled mess of trails. Even so, you'll find hikes and bike rides for all levels.
Michelle Butler
Well traveled scenic plenty of trails for bikes. Nice Moderate climb
Lori Gelder
I love hiking and biking South Mountain ❤️
Aimee Dars Ellis
Lovely place to hike with gorgeous landscape and beautiful views. The parking lot is convenient and trail head easy to access.
Sandy Ounvongsa (Sandy Love)
This was a beautiful hike and lots to see... the trails lead to parking lots with Native Americans selling handmade souvenirs!
Rose Gonzalez
Love hiking and it was great seeing the sunset and praying on New Years Day! A tradition to go Evey Year 🎉 …
Kristi Fenrich
The flowers are blooming on the mountain! South mountain park has so many connecting trails that it's impossible to get bored. With entrances to the park from any side of the valley, it's my go-to when I'm looking to get my hike on. Pretty soon, it'll be too hot to hike unless you're on the mountain close to sunrise and even then ypu shouldn't choose a long hike as the heat can hurt you. Always bring lots of water
S&S Steinbach
Great. Well maintained and marked. Fairly busy at trailhead but over an hour without seeing anyone else a few times out in the back county.
Jasmine Dorsey
Love this place it so pretty and the views are amazing.
Jarrod Biggs
It was a great hike a bike up devistator, then a ride on the Mormon loop. As for biking, it is clear most of the trails are hiking trails co-opted for biking, and this was definitely true between the loop and the Mormon trailhead. If I were to bike again, I would stick on National and avoid too many spurs (FYI, hidden valley is beautiful, but biking isn't really productive in there - tight spaces and hike a bike more than anything).
Kaleigh Marks
Beautiful view of the city & mountains! Perfect place to watch sunset. Peaceful most times, but sometimes crowded. Great hikes. Minimal parking.
Paula Bryce
We enjoyed a beautiful hike, well traveled but everyone was considerate of other hikers. It’s just a short drive from all over the valley too. I wish I had known about it sooner!
Yashaswini Karanth
More of a walk that a hike, but pretty views nevertheless.
Absalom A Shakur
Wow! It felt like it took forever to reach the top. The View along the way was absolutely beautiful.
Once we reach the South Mountain peak it boasted a small Park area that was well kept and populated by people simply coming to enjoy The View, there were people selling homemade jewelry, there were plenty of hikers and lovers enjoying the scene.
Visitors should be aware that by 7 p.m. The gate that takes you to the top of a mountain is closed. South Mountain Park is always a great place to visit whether it's two lovers sharing with interlocked hands walking the trail or an entire family or an individual you'll have the grandest time if you are Outdoors person. Go South Mountain Park!
C
Always love going hiking here, so many different trails to choose from.
Martin Kosmak
This place was recommended to me to check out while in Phoenix. I loved it, great place to hit the trails, just be careful of the scorching sun and bring plenty of water.
Jason Drennen
Great hiking trails with amazing views! Trails are well marked with distance and elevation. Take plenty of water.
Jhon Nava
I've been coming to South mountain for a couple of years now and it's always an amazing time. The hiking trail definitely gets you going and is long enough and high enough that the view definitely pays off. There are snakes and other desert critters during the summer months but that is to be expected leave them alone and they will leave you alone. The parking lot for the actual hiking trail is usually empty and there is ample parking. Occasionally you will hear gunfire but that is from the nearby shooting range. Day or night south mountain has breathtaking views and is a great place to hike and spend a Sunday afternoon.
patrick thomas
Great for week day or weekend hikes. Trails vary from easy to strenuous.
Freedom Coach
There are so many great trails and the views are spectacular.
Nick Bentley
If you are travelling then this is a must see. The views are amazing. If you are like me this is also a great place to downhill race on your longboard, skates, or anything else. Just be mindful of traffic. There is also horse riding right before entering the park. $40 for an hour and $60 for 2 hours.
Christian Eichert
Very nice to see the saguaro cacti and be able to walk around!
K Joe
Good place to do some casual trips. Not far from downtown and perfect vista for the sun valley. Trails overspread the mountains, nearly impossible to set your feet on all of them
Gabriel Navarro
Amazing view of the entire valley. Been going here since I was a kid. Love it every time. Watch your speed on the way up to the summit, lots of pedestrian, cyclists and downhill skateboarders depend on you to stay in your lane. 😊 …
Unicorn world gamer
South Mountain Park is a great place for families and especially for people who love nature, being outdoors and history. The best part about South Mountain Park is it's Educational Center, which has a library, gift shop and guided tours from the Park Ranger's. The Rangers are very knowledgeable of the entire South Mountain Park preserve. There are also petroglyphs on the rocks left from the early Native Hohokam people all throughout South Mountain Park. Be sure to purchase a 'blacklight' so if you hike at night you can easily spot scorpions along the trails. It's really a great place to get away from the hectic metropolitan hustle and bustle... Enjoy!
Lucian Bonas
Nice trails just grab water haha!
Dawei Gu
You can drive all the way to the top, and there were plenty of trails. The scenic view was not the best in Phoenix but still worth visiting.
Daniel A Jones (Daniel J Arthur)
This is one of the best parks in the Phoenix area for hiking and biking. If you can get a parking space, you can enjoy it.
602 276
Spectacular view, awesome ride up the mountain always loved south mountain, never been to dobbins peak i dont think took my girl and my boys up there they had railings kept the kids safe ride down was a little nervous caus my car was jist rolling along so fadt didnt need any gas just the breaks, stayed till it got dark and watched the lights of phoenix, it was pretty awesome.
Taylor
One of my favorite trails close to home.
Joel DeWall
Awesome urban mountain park with some of the best mountain biking trails in the southwest!
Mark Emmons
Hiked the Kiwanis trail. Uphill and rocky fitting a moderate rating. Recommend a good hiking boot, those using athletic shoes may bruise. Great views and with a little effort further up the adjoining national trail a great view at the peak
Dan Reynolds
Great trails. Kiwanis trail is a medium difficulty trail with great scenery. The lookout at the top is awesome. 45 minutes up to the lookout from the trailhead.
Rusty Shackleford
Super fun trails and great views. Can get quite busy. If you're looking for solitude, don't count on it here. That's pretty obvious since it's a city park. Many trails provide a challenging but fun climb to the ridgeline that forms the background of the Phoenix skyline.
The park is extremely popular for mountain biking and trail running. Try doing national trail end to end.
Gary Mastin
Great views of Phoenix. There a lot of hiking trails if that's your thing, or if not, you can drive all the way to the top for spectacular views.
Amber Nicole
Great place for beginning or advanced hikers. Clean restrooms, picnic area, and maps at the bottom. Nice scenery and different levels of difficulty. Highly recommend!
David LaFerney
South mountain is a Phoenix city park with miles of smooth paved roads that wind all the way up to the summit of South mountain. Amazing views are well worth the short trip.
Henry Quiroz
The ramadas and bathrooms have been updated. The park has plenty of bike, hiking and horse riding trails.
Mukund Manikarnike
It's a great view from the top. The way up doesn't have much. If you're disappointed looking at the bare barren incline around you, you should get to the top. Also, summers are hot. Better go early if you're going in the summer. I think anytime from October to April should be a good time to visit
Tami W.
This is my favorite place to take my dog and go walk. I feel like this is a safe place to go and it's so beautiful!
ArtistographerBlu Norals IV
A really beautiful place which i enjoy hiking and capturing subjects at. Its a nice workout plenty of muscle confusion for one's heart.
James “Jim” Dickinson
Well, we were going to one of the old mines but the main road was closed for bikes only. So we parked farther away and after walking for some time our host said it's still a bit of a walk and it was getting very hot so we turned back and saved it for another time. I do want to go back.🤪👍 …
Jake Westin
Great multi directional views including a great view of the entire Phoenix metro area. Be very careful though, what would otherwise be a great driving road is LITTERED with cyclists, bad drivers, and people in the street, so go slow, and be careful
Jacob Ferguson
A very pretty view at night, South Mountain park is mostly a good time. It can be a little run-down as the clientele that frequents the park can be a little sketchy and in certain areas you'll find broken glass bottles littering the ground. On top of this, it can be extremely busy to the point of making what could be a peaceful time anything but.
Rebecca M
Great views and an interesting shelter. The only reason I don't rate it 5 is because it's not accessible to people with mobility issues.
Jason Wyss
I love coming here. Great trails, rock climbing, and views. The kids have a blast. The only downfall is the amout of broken glass around the rocks by the picnic tables. It's sad that people can't respect their surroundings better.
Nick Johnson
This park has all kinds of trails, ranging from beginner to intermediate. There are trails that require a little climbing, but it's not anything crazy. For the most part, the paths are wide, flat, and easy to walk on. The view is great once you gain a little altitude. Most of these trails are also great for mountain biking. There are loops that will take you 12 to 15 miles, or less if you're just getting into biking. Not terribly crowded, but I went on a Tuesday morning. There is ample parking at the trailhead off 48th street, it's just easy to miss. Going south on 48th, it's a right turn and then immediately left past a little station that may or may not be manned. The entrance looks like a gate to the golf course surrounding it, hence easy to pass. There are facilities at the trailhead, they look very clean and well maintained. Also, there are some cool hieroglyphs very close to the lot a couple hundred yards down the desert classic trail.
Deightah
A nice long relaxing drive to amazing views!
Plenty of open space from other people, trails, historic sites, windy!
Don't rush it, live in the moment!
No fee entry, true access to a national treasure.
Eddie_ v_az
A beautiful place to catch the sunset and take some photographs or get some exercises and go for a hike! Kid friendly gates close at 7pm.
Abby Monteith
Lots of parking. Trails were easy to moderate depending on which you picked. It was nice there were so many trails to pick from in the same area. Dog friendly.
Ranjeet Kumar Gupta
Lots of hiking options from easy to hard... There are ramadas at many locations for family picnic.
Mandy
Great hiking up Kiwanis trail. Challenging enough to get your heart pounding, but doable for little ones (our 9 year old handled it).
S
Nice niew of Pheonix!
BAM BAM
Good place to casually stroll or scale a few rock piles. It's a good time either way
Nick Labadie
Awesome place for hiking and biking. Miles and miles of trails that are as easy or challenging as you like. Highly recommend a visit.
Brooke Biltimier
Great hike on the Pima Wash to West Loop with kids and dog. Easy hike and trail was wide most of the hike. My dog was a little disappointed in the lack of rabbits😀 …
Lana Russell
Hubby and I came up here and loved it. No one messed with us, we even made out
Phillip Horton
Loved the views
Jill Wright
Love this park! I go every time I'm in town. Excellent views of the city! Great hiking trails!
Generic Norals IV
Such beautiful views the Thunder Tank looked right at home in the parking lot. I should have some mountain views up on my site Blutintphotography soon. The place opens at 5 and closed at 11 No overnight'n there for the Thunder tank and I. It's such a shame... with their winding roads that take you up to the top of the mountains being able to camp in one's camper up there, overnight... at 2333 ft would really take the cake.
It's still most definitely worth the visit
Jeff Johnson
Great place to see Phoenix and the low desert valley. Next time we'll go at night to see the lights. Worth the time to drive up to the summit overlook. Was 103 degrees in the valley before we headed up. It was 93 degrees up at the overlook.
Wes H
Great range for easy to moderate hiking, a few places have some technical areas but they are not common. This range is massive and had numerous entry points and an expansive trail system. BRING PLENTY OF WATER. People die on this range every summer because they think it will be a literal walk in the park and don't bring the right attire or water.
Amanda Johnson
I love this place. It's a nice peaceful placw to hike. Honestly I didnt have any trouble with the hike and I normally do because I'm out of shape, but when I woke up the next day my legs were so sore.
Hecctic
Great place to get a nice view of the city great place to relax and unwind you can hike nice Trails beautiful views overall cost and Preserve
Eneida De Leon
Beautiful and so calming. Love that it's so close to the horses. Nice place to take photos!👌 and to gather around. …
Ryan Freeman
Very rocky but super close to the city and downtown which is not only convenient but the city views are spectacular, especially in the evening when the sun starts to set. One of my favorite places in Arizona to spend a spring afternoon.
Lis Weller
Great place to hike but Shane on those who have ruined the trail marking signs (boo this). It is hard to navigate due to the missing signs and those blazing their own off road trails.
Anar Dadashov
One of the best place to enjoy watching sun sets! Come at least 1 hour early of the sunset so that you can drive it up.
Aaron Miller
The multiple hikes and drive to the peak were breathtaking. Park at central parking where you’ll find two hikes. One on a paved road for about 2.5 miles and the other will take you to the peak. There are other hiking trails once you enter the main gate. Along the way are plenty of bathrooms at the start of each trail. Central parking has covered picnic tables. Be please mindful of the cyclists along the narrow road taking you to the peak by car. Also, take a moment by opening up your car window and enjoy nature at its best. The view at the top is amazing, especially on a clear day. You see all of Phoenix and the surrounding suburbs.
tracy kyle
Ive been in AZ for 13 years and did not know look out point existed. My boyfriend took me here to watch the sunset and the view was amazing. I didn't know AZ was so beautiful. We were even able to watch the planes land and take off; and the caveat of the evening waa the full moon.
Make sure you dress warm, its pretty cold due to the altitude.
Rich F (Underdog Rich)
Beautiful trails and many of them. I loved all the rock formations for scenery, and capped off the visit atop Robbins Pointe yo watch the Sunset.
Sara Bloom
Beautiful! Amazing view of downtown Phoenix, beautiful cacti and in the spring things really start to bloom. It’s a very sun-filled hike so be prepared to get hot and bring water. Also it’s pretty rocky and has some incline, so prepare for that as well.
Curtis Black
The view was totally awesome and the drive was beautiful take your motorcycle and have some fun
1_gun solace
Extremely large Park several Mountain View's great for motorcycle rides on a winding roads Spectacular view both day and night
Kristina Bradley
We hiked an easy trail. It was a little noisy with the road below, not exactly a peaceful walk in the desert.
Ismail Shah
Quite, scenic and a variety of trails to hike! Love that some trails were much more challenging than others.
Maverick Sierra
I’m from the Midwest so seeing cactuses is kind of amazing. There’s a broad range of difficulty when it comes to the hikes that are offered here, even paths with pavement. I would love to come back and go on the other trails/hikes!!
LJ Johns
A great place to just simply enjoy nature. Whether you are looking for a place to hike, bike, run or just meander through, even when the weather isn't its best.. Lol.... ENJOY.
sean Dontmind
Great place to hike, loved the outdoors here, had an exuberant time there and counting the stars every night until I get to return there.
james seurat
This is the one that everybody looks at, so naturally you have to climb to the top. Park at the lot off of 46th street and Baseline or get off of 48th street on E Pima Canyon Rd (you will see the golf course,it's the road that goes right beside it) for a slightly shorter but harder hike. The parking lot fills up fast so get there early to snap those sunrise-victory pictures at the top!
Honest Reviews4U
Thank you (Mucho gracias) for reading the Honest Reviews4U! The South Mountains is a great place to explore the city and have a relaxing view of the Sunset. You can drive to the top or hike/bike your way up. Please note in the summer time drink plenty of water the day before and on the day of your visit. At the entrance of the moon you can stop at the Scorpion Gulch an take pictures you can also decide to rent a horse and do a horseback ride. At the very to you can view the entire city great place to enjoy the sunset and see the city lights. The location also has Ramadas which you can rent to host parties. The only real I reason I gave it to 4 stars is because at the top of the mountain the parking is very very limited however if you are not able to fit a parking space you can try to find a parking spot as you go down since it does have a scenic parking view area which is also limited parking. The road is very curvy with no barrier between you and the side of the mountain so please drive safe. Overall great place to visit and enjoy some outdoor activity. Highly recommend this place!👍🏼
After visiting this location you may want to consider visiting Tres Rios Wetlands which is named top 100 thing to do in Arizona 😃
Shawn Pahl
Entrance to the park is FREE!!!
South Mountain park is the largest city run park in the United States. Drive down Central Avenue and take the roads all the way to the top of the mountain at Dobbins point, Buena Vista look out and TV towers. It's free to get in and the gates to get in close at 7 PM but you do not have to leave the park until 11 PM. The road up and around the top of the mountain is a sports car/motorcycles dream (or nightmare if you go over the cliffs).
Fantastic mountain for hiking during the day or night time hikes with city views. Granted this mountain is not as private and desolate as the superstitions but it is 10 times better than hiking Camelback with 350 other people on the same trail. I have hiked all day for 15 miles and never ran into a soul all day (which is what I want when hiking).
Multiple access points to the mountain are located all around the perimeter.
During the spring south mountain has a spectacular array of desert wildflowers blooming on it... Get out and take some lovely pictures!
Nicole McMorris
Free and scenic car ride for everyone. Great way to see nature at it’s best.
Tim Jones
Awesome views, very hot in the summer. Bring lots of water even just for walking around the car. Spend the time to visit each of the viewpoints. There is a bathroom and water fountain at the park entrance.
Espeon Umbreon
It was clean!!!! No trash! (Always the first thing I judge by.) Its beautiful and varies in difficulty along the trail.
Consuelo Jackson
I love this place awesome peace of mind beautiful park. Me and my family went there 9/2022 We took my 2 sisters and brother in law they were here to meet me for the first time.We found each other on Ansestery we didn't know of each other. Our dad use to work for parks and recreation back in the 1950s He was assigned to south mountain park .I wanted them to see where our dad worked. It was a great experience to have them with me .We went to the top it was awesome I hadn't been here since 1986 still looks the same
Elyse Bullard
We visit the greater Phoenix area once a year and like to get in a little exercise while we are there and this is the perfect place to go with young children. Easy parking, beautiful views and a nice and steady climb. Good for entry level hikers.
Jeremy Ciaramella
A beautiful and Scenic place to hike. Great place to get some time alone, clear your head, I'll get some time with God as it were.
Andy Schmitt
Great hike! Morman loop with fat mans pass and the tunnel. One of the best hikes I've been on in AZ. Encountered this ground squirrel who ate from our hand.
rick carter
I hiked the 23RD Annual Phoenix National Trail Trek with my AllTrails GPS reporting 15.0 miles with a moving time of 5:13:17. A speedy and exhausting trek up and down a lot of steep hills, total elevation of 2,274 feet. The enrollment is restricted to 300 people and I got onto the 2nd of 6 busses. The park rangers were great with stories and advice on the bus and many of them were on the trail for support and information. The huge city park is amazing with mountain views and cactus and this National Trail Trek takes you from one end to the other.
Vickie Smith
First time out in a long time. Hiked about 3 miles on the trail today. Felt good. Prepping for the holiday feast later tonight.....yum!
bloodthirsty gal
Great views beautiful scenery
Jason Kerns
Best hiking we have done yet in the Phoenix area. Period. Be sure to push yourselves a little. We went about 9 miles today and it was a blast. If you just do a short 2 miles in and out, then you won't get the full experience. Be sure to use GPS on your phone so you can make sure you are still on trails and don't get lost.
John Becker
Great hiking and best 360° views of Phoenix. You won't run out of trails here!
Ryan B.
Great trail for adults, I'd be nervous to bring younger kids on this trail. Amazing views, very scenic, breathtaking if you make it to the top for a suprise!
David Proebstel
Very large park with lots of trails and parking near view sites. Great view of Phoenix. Very hot when we were there (105 degrees F) so not much midday activity. Variety of cactus.
Dale Cade
Beautiful dessert hike. Great for sunrises and a great view of the valley.
Chris Mattix
We hiked part of the Mormon Trail. 3 miles of glorious mountain views and skyline views of the city. The plants are blooming. California Poppies and other forbs are beautiful right now!
Gary B. Haley (Attunist Trilogy author)
Beautiful scenery, amazing two-century-year-old cacti, nice views of the city below, and... entry is free! Just go early before it gets hot. Seriously.
Kristi Kirk
Great hike up Kiwanis trail
Derek Edwards - Lorber
HOT 108°, but worth the views
Mark Pettit
The 2nd largest municipal park after Central Park, this place is huge and most of it is hard to access. There are many hidden treasures, though if you're willing to make the hike and/or drive. Hidden Valley is beautiful, especially within a couple days of a rare rainfall in Phoenox, since water tends to trickle down the crick and the sides of the smooth shale rock faces there. It's a decent hike to get back in there off of the. Mormon or National Trails so bring lots of water and don't plan for this during the hotter times of year. Dobbins Lookout is a neat place that can be accessed by car. There is a marker there that points out popular landmarks in the valley far below. I recommend going to Dobbins just before sunset so you can check out the city by day and the spectacular lights of same after dark, of course hoping for a great sunset to divide the two. The park entrance does close at sunset so you have to time your visit to be there for that.
Roberta Johnson
I really enjoy South mountain. They have the small Ramada which is a great beginner hike.b The big Ramada is much tougher. About 30 to 45 minute hike.
Katie Grimes
What a stunning area! An outdoor playground for sure! If I lived here I'd be here every week!
Shane Calhoun
If there is a must see in the Phoenix metro area it's got to be south mountain Park especially just before sunset the view of Phoenix is nothing short of breath taking the drive up the mountain is a curvy winding road the can be exhilarating for the racers out there but not everyone is comfortable with roads like this so please be considerate if you come up on someone who isn't and give them space and patience.
Ryan Call
Gorgeous place for a walk, hike, run, or mountain biking. With plenty of trails, photo-ops, rugged natural beauty, and acreage that is greater than the island of Manhattan, this is not a place to miss.
Lo C
South Mountain Park is full of beautiful landscape. While walking we were able to see some of Arizona's wildlife. Our hike was not crowded and easy to navigate.
Chris Bauer
you gotta take a drive to top of s mtn, America’s largest city park or get some hiking in on some of their many trails!!
Sam Mathur
Easy escape from Phoenix. Drive to the summit and enjoy beautiful valley views from Dobbins lookout. Hike to hidden valley if you have more time available in the day. They also have multiple ramadas available in foothills for family picnic and fun.
Kim L
Nice medium trail. Best weather ever. Well marked clean. Nice bathroom facilities.
Cynthia Kunakom
Very good morning workout. It's huge and have multiple trails with different level. Choose according to how much you want to do and be mindful of the sun!
Sharn Appel
My favorite hike - the view is stunning and once you leave the biking trails it is very personal, and allows you to see the city in a different light. A must see
Magdiel Romero
A pretty good scenic park with pretty easy to moderately difficult trails for hikers and mountain bikers alike!
Fred Haggerson
The Desert Classic bike/hike trail is classic and especially beautiful in the spring. It's 12+ miles of beautiful Sonoran Desert with many tributary trails - very awesome for a city park, in my opinion.
andrewjjeep
Mountain hiking trails and desert floor biking trails! Dogs on leashes, clean-up after your pet.
Sirius lion
Wonderful Place to hike great views and lots of resting areas. More of a moderate hike up but once in the mountains it's awesome!
Ian Horrocks
Fantastic spot for hiking and biking only 15 minutes from downtown Tempe. Mormon-National loop is a classic enduro-style loop and a must for intermediate to advanced riders. Recommended direction is up Mormon loop and National to Buena Vista then all the way back down National.
AJ SistaZ
The best view to drive to in phoenix. Great for the whole family, and it is 8 degrees cooler up the mountain
Dolores Damian
Like how nice and clean it is. You can drive or hike. Love the view driving up. Great photo opportunities. Awesome view from the top.
BrolyFX
As my first time going, I didn't really go in too deep due to the fact that it was closed. Wasn't bad but it would have been nice to get the full experience.
Bobbie Lasan Scaramella
Beautiful park, wildflowers blooming, so much room. Great trails. We took Bajada to Alta to National to Bajada. Just under 10 miles.
Jeff Goldberg
Desert Classic is always a fun ride. The Pima Canyon parking lot can be full St times.

Great place to go for a hike or just drive through.

We love to walk the trails. We are older and go on the easy ones. But there are trails for all levels of experience. It does get busy sometimes, but you can still enjoy the park, beautiful views and a quiet walking trails, picnics and famliy fun.

See you out there!
Cactus Pilot
I love the night Airgun shoot held here monthly..only place in the world you can do this.
Sonya Gonzalez
Must enter before 7pm or gates close to see the sunset. At the bottom of the mountain...they have horses!
Michael Edward Bradstreet
Nice place for some serious hiking and biking right on the outskirts of town, which is hard to find. There is something for everyone, whether it be a leisurely stroll, or more aggressive off trail climbing over the ridgeline.
Dangerously dry during the summer, so bring plenty of water.
REAL Retail Co.
Leave the complainers at home, bring back up water and light jackets - lots to see.. These photos are looking south at Lost Ranch
Antonio Castaneda
One of my favorite places to visit. Great trails, great scenery.
Chad
Amazing views and twisty Mountain road. The pictures do no do the height and steepness of the hills justice. Lots of trails for the hiking or horseback riders. A must see for anyone in area.
Tom Jarvis
Pretty good place to practice canyon carving on a motorcycle. Avoid on the weekends though if that's your intention. Good hikes too.
David Stone
What a view! If you’re not a hiker, that’s okay. You can drive in and see the sights. If you love to hike, make this a trip! Be careful of the temperature obviously, but it’s a great place for sure.
Robert Babis (Bobby)
A great place to go and experience 360 degree views of the surrounding areas, with excellent views of downtown Phoenix from multiple vantage points. Definitely a gem in the area.

A place of peace and serenity--from the inner city!

Good walking trail, great views. Limited parking.
Jennifer Hagen
Good hiking, mostly up but great views at the top. Trails well marked. Bathrooms available but not very nice or updated.
Brenda Miller
Best desert hiking located in the city. There are numerous trails from which to choose and not as busy as some places.
Yong Sim
There are a lot of people on this trail since it's so accessable from Phoenix. You can see both central Phoenix and Chandler from the mountains. The Marcos trail is deffinately recommended, make sure you bring water and stretch afterwards!!
Kevin Sargent
We love hiking many of the peaks. Some oaths are a little congested at times, but it's to be expected.
catherine maynes
Great trails for running and mountain biking. Great places for experienced and non experienced bikers.

Great place to get away in the middle of it all. Can be busy, but if you choose the right times it can be spectacular!

Keven Grasso
Very well marked trail. Beautiful views.
siva km
Wow, Great place for a day trip. Drive all the way up to see the entire valley and Phoenix downtown, it was nice view.
Valerie Peterson
We went hiking here last weekend and enjoyed the trails very much! The stone houses were so fun to see as well. The trails we were on were not challenging, but we still managed a six mile loop before making it back to our car! I would definitely recommend this hike for beginners or someone who just wants to go out for a run on the trails!
The Fat Theist
UPDATE (5/18/2018): They just renovated the big and little Ramadas. The view from the big Ramada is the best in SoPho!
Hundreds of miles of trails for mountain biking and hiking. They also have Ramadas that can be reserved for free! No where else do you get these views for free.
Gabriel Figueroa
Beautiful view great photo going up and down and at the peak

Veronica Bell
Amazing trail. Great for a quick hike.
Bob Berrigan
Lots of hiking trails. Great views from many locations. Pretty cool for a city nature park. My only complaint would be about signage on some trails.
AKChristy C
It was so busy on Christmas that they closed one of the big parking lots and then about 3 o'clock they closed the entrance gate to the park. I have never seen so many people there.
Ino Malverick
Great place to hike! Some trails to choose from.
Paul Myers
My Labrador and I love this place. There was a great view. It might be too hot for a dog in the summer months
Jay Bodam
Always fun to hike and enjoy the park. Fin things to see. Bring your water...
Cecilia Escobedo
During this time of the year South Mountain Park is the most beautiful place to be sitting out there on the tables the Ramadas the natural wild plants in the landscape everything is just so breathtaking and it's peaceful on top of all of that. I recommend this place to anyone especially during the time when you can barbecue there. And there's plenty of room for the kids to hike and explore.
Bart Hull
Great place to take my two horses for a real trail ride. Rode for about 4 hours today.
Macie Blaylock
This is Our Happy Place ❤
Wonderful and easy hiking with stunning views. Has an established overlooking area for families and there are several roads leading to other trails at the top. Be mindful when driving the mountain, as many cut into other lanes going up and down and there are many blind curves - be aware and avoid an accident with other cars or pedestrians. Take a skinnier car if you can! Lovely place!
Joshua Solver
Closes at 7pm. No cost to get in. 2 lane 15mph paved road to the top. No shoulder on the road.
Nicholas Johnson
Great location and the view is from 2202 e Dobbins 85042 which will be on market early next year. Insider info!!!!

Spectacular views from Dobbins Lookout. Watch out for the local wildlife too!
Head back down hill along Summit Road to view the dikes along the raodcut.
Scott Gregory
4 stars only because I couldn't drive to the top due to construction. However, you can bike and hike beyond the barricade.
Nayar Lopez
Slam dunk with tourists. Visitors are almost sure to love it; easy to plan; and you can stay one hour or all day.
I had family visiting from aborad, and despite not having been in Phoenix long, we were able to visit on a whim and it didn't disappoint!
S. Schroeder
Living at the base of South Mountain my husband, I and our dogs have explored the vast areas of this reserve. It's so expansive you never run out of trails.
PERSOP
It was suggested I try to get away from everyday life. I mentioned being in numerous local parks. I was told that is not getting away and South Mountain Park was suggested. At the time it was the largest, in city park, in America with more than thirty miles of trails. I find it similar to a symphony in seeing and hearing new things quite often. It was my first experience with a lot of wildlife none of which ever caused me concern. One visit was as a storm approached. All visitors were vacating. What a unique gift! The water has no where to go but down. It sparkles and tinkles. The smell in the air was wonderful. I often laughed at myself. Shugging along at a brisk pace and suddenly having much older hikers pass by me as if I were walking backwards. Over time I saw Javalina, coyotes, rattle snakes, lizards, Jack rabbits, Prarie dogs many types of birds and many other things. The trails are highly varied with many beautiful views. As the seasons or weather changes, the park changes.
After the rain there is flowering and growth. At times the ground looks like the most beautiful of carpets. It could be green with a million yellow flowers. My review could easily be much longer.
Saif
I loved hiking there, it is not a tough hike and the scenery is very beautiful, you can see the whole city and other mountains

SOMO is great mountain bike and hike area that has a huge variety of trails for all skill levels. The trails are very well maintained by volunteers coordinated by the park rangers. Great area for hiking, picnics, and a casual mountain drive. Very well maintained with marked roads and trails.

Good easy hikes and occasional chuckwalla and other wildlife. There's also horseback riding nearby and you can take a scenic drive to the top.

Raised in Ahwatukee and resided there until 2008 then moved away; I have hiked, biked, horse backed here and still currently visit my stomping ground when I can and all I can say is it just a breath taking place . Been my place to go when I have needed a place to unload stress or worry or a fun place to go and have an adventure and make awsome memories with many friends and family. It has such a vase variety of easy to hard hiking trails. Beautiful wild life, trees and cactus. The sunrises and sunsets here are amazing. What I love to is when you hike to the very top you see all of Phoenix so breath taking it the best reward.
Enjoy! Stay safe! Love you Ahwatukee you will always be in my heart

We hiked right on the edge of the park and it was beautiful!

This was a 17.2 mile hike on the national trail. Not hard climb areas and running areas

For my first "Real" hike, Ranger Trail wasn't too difficult and the views were great

South Mountain is so beautiful, especially this time of year. There was a little bit of trash that we picked it up

This is a great option for hikers. These range from moderate to difficult hikes. Not crowded like other mountains. Great scenic views.

There are so many trails to pick from. Make sure to do your research before you come, to know which trail you want to explore. Also come prepared with water.
