Went for 3 days and had a great time! Each site has a driveway for vehicles (max 2 cars), picnic bench, fire pit and spots for tents. Bathhouse had indoor bathrooms, outdoor and indoor showers. Beach was right next to campsite and was only open to campers. Saw wild horses in the early morning around the camping areas. Would highly recommend and can't wait to go again!

We stayed at Site F150 for 3 nights at the end of April and it was a tremendous experience. A few notes:
It was super windy (around 13+ mph) the first night, which required us to purchase a smaller/ lower tent in order to be able to keep it up and sleep in it. Extra/ more heavy duty stakes were an absolute must. We had to make adjustments, but it added to the adventure.
The lack of shade is also very real (we discovered on our second day), even in April - something to be aware of when planning a visit.
**Do all the nature walks, especially the one at the Welcome Center!** It was a welcome reprieve from the windy shore the first very chilly morning we were there and trying to stay warm.
The horses were so cool. We kept our distance of course, but happened to catch a feisty encounter amongst the horse family in the National Park.
The access to the ocean was really just incredible. Get up for the sunrise! It's worth it. We will be coming back.

What an absolutely wonderful experience! So much wildlife, and beautiful surroundings. The bathhouse was great, area was clean, fellow campers were nice.
If you haven't camped here before, definitely try it out at least once, to see the wild horses and camp on the beach is totally worth it 🐎

Unbelievable place to visit! We saw horses in the distance, and deer in the road right in front of us! Whether you want to camp on their ground, ride the many roads seeking the famous ponies, or spend an afternoon walking the trails, or relaxing on the beach, it's a serene and gorgeous place to go! Just be respectful, don't litter or leave anything behind that would show you were ever there. It's such a special place!

Had an amazing time. Kids loved seeing the wild ponies multiple times per day, sometimes right in our campsite! We stayed in H-Loop. Beach was less than a 3 minute walk, and was not nearly as crowded as Ocean City is in mid-July. Didn't have to worry about getting hit by a boogie board while in the water, which was a definite bonus. Definitely bring bug spray, bikes, and shade from the sun!

The BEST place to camp! It doesn’t get any better than waking up steps away from the beach. And the beach is wonderfully empty during the day with only a handful of fellow campers around. It is true that you must reserve your site the instant it becomes available or forget about getting a site!

With my husband we come to the Assateague State Park camping every year. It's an amazing island with wild horses and a beautiful white sand beach. Each camping spot has a nice camping table and a metal fire pit. You can buy food and ice any time at the entrance of the camping. Restrooms and showers with hot water are super clean and with plenty of space.

This is truly a wonderful place to visit. I had not been here in over 25 years, and the fact that the natural landscape has been preserved makes me so happy! The beach is clean, the restrooms accessible, the parking plentiful. Seeing the horses is always a thrill!

Great place for a fall get away. Nice facilities including good shower stalls and very clean bathrooms. Our volunteer host, Chris was friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. He even went out of his way to help us with an RV problem. He was terrific.
Sites were clean and easy to get into. Small fall crowd and very friendly. I would guess the summer is crowded but was great in October. Easy access to the ocean and bay. Some sites are pet friendly. Nice looking playground at the Nature Center.
Rangers rode through periodically to check on things. They were very friendly and helpful. It was nice to have a security gate for the campground.
We saw lots of birds, butterflies, horses, and deer. Great place to walk or relax.
I highly recommend it!

The sites vary greatly (huge beach front to tiny spots packed into a crowded loop) and are very difficult to get. We've stayed a few times and have enjoyed the beach, cool salty breezes and the ponies. There's no need to go anywhere else if you enjoy that sort of thing, but OC and Berlin are close by if you want other things to do while you're in town. The pics are from our last visit. Best site we've had so far.
Mandy Liu
Highly recommended this place if you enjoy surrounding by wild horses. There were a couple of horses welcoming us at the entrance. Two horse showed up and surprised us (see the picture) when we were in the beach (see the picture for the map #4). Of course, everyone kept distance and not interrupted these wild horses.

We absolutely loved our stay at Assateague State Park. Our campsite was right across the dunes from the beach, park employees were very helpful, and needed information was easy to find. We stayed in a generator-free loop and loved falling asleep to the sound of the ocean. We saw a LOT of horses, and two galloped right through our campsite at one point. We also saw several osprey, two with fish in their talons; a horseshoe crab; and dolphins. The bathrooms at Assateague State Park were beautiful and well maintained, with clean showers.
My biggest concern with recommending Assateague as a place to visit, is that it can be so confusing to sort out online what is what, between the State Park, the National Seashore, and access to southern Assateague through Chincoteague in Virginia. Once we had reserved our campsite, finding it was straightforward and we had beach access from there. To get into the rest of the state park I believe we would have needed to pay an extra fee, the National Seashore did have a separate fee ($25 per car and they would only accept a PRINTED copy of our 4th grade National Park pass, which we had forgotten). I would highly recommend bringing bikes if you visit, because they seemed to be able to get around just about everywhere, even more easily than cars (in terms of potentially avoiding some of the gates/fees...maybe) and could even be ridden across the bridge to the mainland/visitor center.
The visitor center was also very interesting, with some of the history of Assateague, conservation efforts, souvenirs, and the staff were very helpful with explaining the different parts of the park.
So, with all that said, I HIGHLY recommend a visit. We loved it.

Assateague Island is a beautiful place to visit don't get me wrong but as far as state parks go I nor was anyone else in my family of four very impressed with this particular one. For one thing we didn't see any horses other than the pictures on the signs which was kinda the draw for us visiting here in the first place. For another we had to pay $20.00 at the entrance gate just to visit the beach here and then when we tried to take a little drive down the shore so we could possibly see some horses and get some good pictures we came upon a second gate where they tried to charge me another $20.00 just to keep driving. I did however manage to get out of paying that because I told them that I just wanted to turn around and leave. The only saving grace for this park was that my daughter was able to find and collect some seashells for her collection when other beaches wouldn't provide however I'm surprised they didn't try to search me and charge me for those as well lol. Thanks for the shells but from now on I think we'll just stick with the free beaches and if we want to see horses I'll go to the racetrack.
Sarah Woodward-Jones
Nice little gift shop. Good picnic spot, restrooms. But the guide stationed to teach about shells, sharks and the local wildlife put our visit over the top. Thank you for helping us to identify the shells we found!
Ashira Konigsburg
Not too busy on a cold day. The northern part has two closed trails right now but the dune trail is open. Plus the beach was beautiful. We did see some horses and both species of deer. Worthwhile trip. Glad we came.
Joel Seppala
If you're just looking to experience the ocean on a mid-winter's break, this is the place to go. The beach was broad, long, quiet (i.e. few people) and peaceful. On one side of a walk along the sandy way were the dunes, on the other was the mighty Atlantic. As of late January the shops in the park were closed, but there were port-a-johns in the parking lot available.
jacob Miller
Gorgeous area with pristine beaches in the off season. Only a 15 minute drive from ocean city and we’ll worth the trip. National forest staff were extremely informative and helpful. All in all a great place for a quick picnic or camping trip.
Jager1007
Beautiful, magical, wild ponies roaming free throughout campgrounds. So much to do ! Paved bike trails, well marked hiking trails, activities for example tye-dye Tuesdays, etc....of course swimming at the beach. Stop at the Assateaque visitor center with great things to see and buy ! You can even sponsor one of your favorite ponies roaming around. Bit do not feed or do not touch, the park is very strict on this and you will be fined a hefty price. Look, admire from afar but to not approach. At night the ponies will come visit around the fire and may even lay down and stay for a visit if your lucky enough. At night, take a walk on the beach with a flashlight and see all the ghost crabs that are out on the sand. Such a beautiful place for families because there is so much to do.
Sean Dement
Great park, plenty of activities from the beach to biking & hiking. Can go paddling & explore. If staying the night at the State Park camp it is pretty standard for a State Park, very open areas. Overall was nice, just very open. Worth it for the beach location.
Traci Fannin - Poole
One of my favorite places to visit. I enjoy looking for the ponies and I enjoy the quiet drive on the island. I visit the island in the winter as it is quiet and there is no rush or hurry feeling but I’m sure it’s quite different in the spring / summer / fall months.
Lisa Marie
Absolutely LOVE this place. We did see one pony. She seemed to be lost from her herd because she kept calling out to them. The park rangers were trying to corral her back to her herd it looked like. She was VERY pretty 😍,.. …
K Weir
If you want to drive down the beach it's $110-200 for a permit. Decent beaches but harder to get to the ones facing the river vs the sea. Parking can also be an issue during busy times and there's a sign over the bridge saying expect back up for miles on weekends.
Doreen Butler
This is the best place ever, the people, the beach, campground, everything was great. The horses were beautiful, I'd definitely recommend it to everyone. The restrooms were amazingly clean all the time, they have a campground where you can bring your dog , I can't say enough about this beautiful amazing place.

There are three ways to approach this park. The first entrance allows you quick access to the beach. There is a five dollar parking fee. The second entrance is found by driving little further south. You will find what appears to be two toll booths. The enterance fee is$ 25 per vehicle. There is also a yearly fee of $45 if you choose to come here often. Paying this fee allows you to enter a world of serine happiness. A most humble, soothing environmental paradise that provides places to walk, hike, swim ( beach or bay), kayak and ride a bicycle. There are places to camp with restrooms and showers. There are places to picnic and barbecue. Most interesting part of your visit is the finding of wild horses. Their idiosyncratic behavior is best kept at a distance. Some horses
are nested far out into their own narrow strip islands surrounded inside the bay waters. As you dive to the end of the road, there is a large parking lot and there you will find the third enterance to this park. The third enterance is for those who absolutely love to drive their vehicles onto the beach. Best to have a vehicle that allows you to drive on the sand. It costs $150 to enter and is good for one year. Great place for the family and seniors. Handicap friendly. Most impressing is that the park environment is kept clean and maintained. Worth the trip.
joshua stugart
It is crazy to see the wild horses just roaming around the island. We spent the morning on the beach digging for sand crabs and then drove around checking out the horses. It was an awesome experience and very much worth taking the time
Mary Carr
We were up in this area for a few days enjoying the ocean. To be able to go to assateague State Park and see the wild horses was unforgettable. Such a beautiful place I feel honored to experience it.
Ivonne Beltran Parks
Amazing family RV camping experience. Clean facilities, clean easy beach access from the campgrounds. With some careful planning, the wild horses were wonderful to watch and not a nuisance. We will definitely come back again.
Shannon T
This is definitely one of my favorite places. Growing up reading the Misty books and then able to come and see the ponies in real life and up to 40 ft is a dream come true. The beaches and trails are beautiful.
1DivineLine 2Health
The beach was beautiful and very clean. It was worth paying the $5 to enter. We also got to see the wild horses on our way out. My 80 yr old mom was intrigued by the positive experience. No pets allowed unless if they are service dogs. Do you want a quiet and family beach this one is it! 🌞❤🏖❤🐕🐎 …

so lovely! seeing the horses is a real treat. we brought our dog and she loved the ocean. so beautiful and relaxing, i didn’t want to leave.
Tony Ham
Always hit this place when we visit Ocean City, md. Even got to see a young horse sleeping on the road blocking traffic. All in all a very good time.

A destination worth visiting. Great day use beach, and excellent camping. Best time to visit is hands down September or October when the crowds have dwindled and the bugs have thinned out. Go to the national side for some more trails and a beach bonfire. If you are just looking for a good beach the state park is my go to. In the summer they have a surprisingly solid snack bar. Oh and if you are drinking, koosie up.
Nirnendu Roy
Beautiful seashore and the wild horses are the main attraction of this place. They have facilities for camping grounds..1-7 day passes are available for 25 bucks.Marshlands are full of birds and other wild animals. We loved the place and will visit again

Stayed here one night about two weeks ago. Was an amazing experience! Saw horses on the way in and on the beach in the early morning. I was even able to do a bit of bird watching. Set up is great and doesn’t feel crowded. You can find a nice quiet spot on the beach easily. Bathrooms/showers were very nice and kept clean. There are quite a few mosquitoes sometimes so it is best to bring bug spray and anti-itch medication. This is one of the best ways you can vacation.
Christine DeVose-Cowans
Great place to visit. This is my second year camping here and it was perfect. Making reservations online is simple and easy. Check-in once at the state park was a breeze. The campsite was clean and well maintained. The bath houses were clean. Wonderful experience with being close to the beach. Plenty of wild horses, just follow the rules and keep your campsite clear of food and keep your distance. I've already booked my campsite for Fall 2022.
koko rude
I love that it's not overly crowded on the beach and there are large sea shells to collect if that's your thing but you have to make it through them to get to the softer sand out into the ocean. We saw more horses this trip and some baby horses lol. There isn't much relief from the sun though unless you go into the snack bar or bring a beach umbrella.

My 50th birthday wish was to spend the weekend camping amongst the wild ponies of Assateague Island and the ponies did not disappoint! Our spot was right against the dune so we had quick access to the beach. We walked and hiked all around the island (usually around 5 miles per day... I'm sure most people would prefer their bikes). Our camp hosts were lovely and informative. We arrived on a Thursday, but by the time the Labor Day weekend crowd arrived it got crowded, noisy, and unfortunately the ladies bathroom got pretty dirty (they were very clean when we arrived). I do not hold that against the state park... it's almost expected for a long holiday weekend crowd (and that's where my birthday falls). With that being said, I'd go back in a heartbeat and would just avoid the busiest of camping weekends.
Sandee Knight
The weekends in the summer are extremely crowded. The first parking lot was full and we waited 20 minutes in traffic to get to the other lot. But ponies were on the side of the road and we could see them walking around while we waited to get into the parking lot.
Ricky Hanson
A beautiful place to visit. Saw the wild horses, relaxed on the beach for a few hours. Gorgeous beach!
Francesca Canale
I prefer Assateague over OC Beach any day! Less crowded, bigger and broader shoreline and calmer waters. The ponies come right onto the beach while you're on it. Don't advise bringing food, as it will attract them to your camp. And they WILL route through your belongings and eat anything they can! Keep back. They are wild and will charge if threatened. The horse flies can bite pretty good so don't forget the big spray. My favorite place to spend any day of the year!
Anku Aravind
Beaches, bays, swamps and horses. If you enjoy outdoors it’s a nice place to explore. Bring food, water, hat and bug spray.
Kayne Nein
Beautiful place that I've been going to since I was born. Worth exploring and seeing the ponies will make anyone's day especially children.
Mary McDaniel
Plenty to see. Nice beach accessed by a a paid lot ($5) plenty to see and a nice walk. Didn't do the national shore park with the bigger entrance fee.
Jennifer Ch.
This place is amazing!!! The beach sand, the ocean, the beautiful horses and the amazing sunset.... is all a win win.
Nelson Jacobsen (SonofNels)
One of the best parks anywhere with fun for whole family from day trips to longer stays AISP includes horses, they're wild and bite so don't touch. The campsites are nicely setup and during season there are host campers and can help you out and a cart comes by at night with ice and fire wood. Make reservations it's popular
Jason Schmitt
It is a beautiful place with friendly people. Campground spots are very flat. Be prepared to get sand all over everything. *duh*
Valerie Harwood
My favorite beach to visit. I enjoy the clean beaches, warm Atlantic Ocean and watching the wild horses walk freely on at Assateague State Park.
Genna Arnell
I have been longing for a good beach ever since moving to the mainland from Hawaii. This place scratched that itch. The beaches were clean. The lifeguards were attentive. There are even park employees there to educate you on all kinds of wildlife! Clean facilities and friendly employees, doesn’t get much better.
Shaun T
Beautiful park with amazing trails walking, biking, hiking trails. Lots of great spots for kiyaking. Beautiful beaches with wild horses that are beautiful and friendly. ( Keep your distance and do not feed them)
Julie Nordstrom
Wonderful! Took our lab to the dog friendly side in Maryland. He didn't care for the water; I did and was knocked so I did it again. Fun! White sand, saw beautiful horses both at the beach and on the way into the park. A must go!
Wednesday July 27, 2022 will mark the 97th year of Chincoteague's annual Pony Swim.
Chad Stakolosa
This place never disappoints us. One of our annual destinations. The "private" beach is just magnificent. Great for RVs and there are a few electric sites, but we use the generator and fill the fresh water tanks and can last 3 days. If you're a boujie glamper, stay away...there's true nature out here.
Randy R
Assateague has nice beach and nowhere as busy as ocean city beache! Lifeguard was super friendly and so was everyone else!
Fawn Lisette
10 years ago I would have given the state park 10 out of 5 ⭐, however in recent years, the park has been allowing the plants to take over the sites, which wouldn't be so bad if most of the plants weren't prickly plants and cactus. What happened to the days of sandy sites? I really miss those days.
Plant complaining aside, Assateague Island is one of my all time favorite places EVER!! THE VIEWS, THE OCEAN, THE HORSES, THE PEOPLE YOU MEET HERE.... ALL that combined makes for the best experiences and memories. Don't get me wrong i will definitely be coming again. Absolutely love the yearly tradition of staying on this island for a week. And I will be continuing the tradition.
Eric Villard
If you're looking to see some wild ponies, this is the place to go. The visitor's center and about a mile of the national seashore road on the island are free.
We've always found the ponies grazing on the side of the road, so you don't need to drive into the paid area at all to see them. There are plenty of pull-off areas on the island, or you can park at the visitor's center and walk across the bridge over to the island.
Joey Huckaby
Beautiful scenery, really cool and informative trails. Seeing the horses was really cool and there are all kinds of things to do there as well. Definitely will visit again and it is certainly recommended to go visit.
Doa Al
Beautiful quiet beach. There’s a restaurant on the beach u can try. I would suggest brining chairs and something to sit in. Some people had something to cover them from the sun over their heads. Fee is $5 per person. We didn’t see the horses near the place where we were sitting but we saw them by the bridge when we were exiting the park.
caine wallace
Lot of horses to see everywhere! Awesome place to go for day trip! Went on a free day so cost nothing!
BEN
I only wish they had a little bit more restriction on generator hours. I had some people just run it from out there till 10 o’clock at night. Which was technically legal.
In general they had a lot of volunteers keeping things neat. I love the ponies. I was here in late September and it was not super crowded on the beach. Campsites most were full.
Rebecca McNellis
I was so happy to see the wild horses! Always wanted to go here. It did not dissapoint!😊 …
Kara Connolly
Absolutely love this place was so happy that the 1 day pass is automatically for a week because we came back down w my kids and they got to see the horses as well!! My first review was for the specific beach (seashore) but now since I drove through the park 2x and got to see the horses both times I'll review it here and add some pics again of the Seashore just because of the awesome gorgeous paradise it is! And I got to see a huge ghost crab come out from his hole lol not to mention schools of fish in the ocean and the horses. Absolutely treasure this place! Workers here are doing a fabulous job, such clean facilities!
*I love how the park employees drive around in the carts and monitor people stopping traffic and pulling over or crowding too much to the horses and make sure that they're maintaining distance 👏 loved that! Didn't even mind that we hadda keep it moving this time and couldn't get pics, me and my kids have the memories which is what counts and the horses remained chill in their home 👌
LP
Just as magical as you’ve been told. Bath houses, changing stations, and snack shack. Accessible entrances to the beach.
Margaret Thomas
This is our family's favorite campground. Very close access to the beach with a pretty much guaranteed wild horse spotting. Cool enough with no ac even in hot summer months. Very easy dumping and water stations and pretty big, level and easy to get into rv spots for a beach setting. They actually leave a decent amount of space between spots. I like section C best if you want to feel a bit more private. No hookups and typical generator restrictions.
Neeraj Shrivastava
Fantastic family friendly camping! So many people around feels good near to beach . In the night you feel the waves in ocean side. Clean toilet and camp area. In bay side it’s calm and so much still water with picnic tables . There are horses and you can find easily in morning or evening time. It’s just amazing. Only one thing you may not like that parking fee $25 if you don’t have yearly pass, on top of your camping fee you paid online . Though it’s valid for a week but if you aren’t camping for more than 1/2 days then it’s looks costly. In case you are not camping just want to enjoy beach you may park in state park but then don’t get entry beyond state park. Camping are and state park both are separate area. You may find horses even if you got to only state park if you are lucky because there is no boundary for horses it’s their own area and we all respect it . Isn’t it ?😊
Joey Zierer
My family and I have been coming here 4th of July weekend since I was 5 years old, and I don't regret anything. This place is paradise. A few suggestions for new people are sand stakes, 12inch steal ones from campmore is a must if you plan to survive an island storm. Horses know how to open coolers so they have to be hidden in a car and Do. Not. Touch. The. Horses.
Linghao Xu
I love this park both VA part (biking) and MD part (great trail). check out the photo and video:)
Nina Chong
Stayed at D 90, 92 & 94. Perfect place for kids to ride their bikes/scooters/skateboards in that round circle. Close to beach and restroom. We were there in April and it was still freezing at night. We weren't able to see the horses, so we'll be coming back soon.
Luke Smith
Absolutely beautiful! Had a great 2 days here! Can't wait to come back.
Kathryn Corselius
I loved visiting Assateague with friends. It was the perfect mix of being remote but also close enough to Ocean City's boardwalk for a quick night out. The island is beautiful; it has many different places to explore walking, biking, or even kayaking (available to rent).
Chelsea Lam
We stopped by here because my daughter loves horses and our visit did not disappoint! It was so cool to see the free roaming horses and the beach. We went to the beach later in the day, like 4pm-ish and it wasn't really crowded or too hot/cold. It was just really beautiful and we want to try camping next!
tony szklany
Miles of beach and wildlife wildlife horses ane the best know altho sika deer are also common hard to get in to camp in season but if you like uncrowded beachs and wild horses worth it
Terry Newell
Absolutely beautiful..cool treasures to find at the beach, and candy kitchen!!! The horses are a trip...they don't mind delaying traffic to chill amongst eachother on the roads,, poop for ya, strike a pose. Soo cool. Boardw a lk was the biggest I've ever scene, awesome Waterpark and arcade! Amazing time with my best friend Tones.
Linda Houseknecht
Amazing! I will be sure to visit here again. The area it was beautiful, it was amazing to see wild horses. The staff was very friendly and informative.
Brian Dowd
Beautiful beach. Costly to get in but worth it. As we parked we saw the wild horses coming our way. Amazing!
Thaddeus Taylor
Very interesting visitor center -- glad we took time for this. Camping was very accommodating. We did not get RV hookups, but there was heated shower house and dish washing station. Very beautiful beach. We saw horses... just a little bit too close.
Anna Lowry
Love this dog friendly beach with the horses wandering around!
Jamie Lynn
I have gone here a few times since I was a little kid... always loved it here... the park is always clean, and beautiful...Also, it is just calming to know the wildlife can roam free.... but please don't be stupid and try to pet them; they are WILD.
This is a definite place to enjoy the beach, sight see, or observe nature.
Jesse Marder
Nice campground with above average restroom facilities. The park has a big beach. Call the Pony Express restaurant first - we were there when it should have been open but it was not. Horses came by on beach and campground. Bugs not bad second week of September when there was a breeze from the ocean. With no breeze they were annoying but not intolerable. Very hot and no shade available but cooled off enough at night to sleep in tent.
Becky Beegle
Beautiful beaches nice walking trails and lots of ponies
trudy Hooper
Great for families swimming and sight seeing beautiful horses
Jessica Brock
Love this place! Every time we go there is something new to see never the same! And tons of space!
Ruth Ann Seyffart
Beautiful beaches and the camping is great. Listening to the sound of the waves while you sleep is priceless. Sunrises beautiful and the ponies visits are one in a million.
Marissa
Park was absolutely breathtaking and so clean! The horses come right next to the car so you can easily admire them. The "pony rangers" made sure everyone was at a safe distance from the horses and educated us along the way! Such a unique experience, I've never seen wild horses before!
Stacey “mborochick73” Flood
Wonderful beach not too crowded and beautiful scenery.
Nika Simmons
Most magical experience we had an lovely Birthday celebration on the Beach! Family ultimate summer fun. Must go no horsing around....lol
Edwin Prasad
Excellent place, pet friendly beach. Amazing views, you spend 3 to 4 hours on an average.
Anthony Fresolone
Been coming here for 30+ yrs.
Always see something cool. love the ponys and the birds we brought the electric bikes this year and had a great time seeing every road. My favorite beach.
Highly recommend
Michael Spenard
Great place to go to the beach. It's pretty clean, the bathhouses are better than most. The ponies on the beach were cool to see. Watch out for the pony dropping, but overall a great visit.
Dave Moss
Amazing park where you can still see active wildlife including ponies or horses. The beach sand was soft and clean. The ocean was great and at night you can see the ocean city boardwalk and ferris wheel. The night sky is some of the best you'll get.
Tara Mease
amazing beach! pay to park on the island, or free parking at visitor's center and lovely 1mi walk over the bridge and through wildlife to get to beach. bathhouse right by the beach where you can shower and change. not much of the commercialized beachy experience, which is great if you want real beach to truly enjoy
jolynn powers
Visited before memorial day and it was the perfect get away. Quite beaches clean park areas. The boat tour was a highlight of our trip. Got to see the ponies and swim for hours in the ocean.great time.
Joel VanSlyke
Nothing like it. Only negative we had was one neighboring camper that was a bit loud. They only have one dump station, which is a bit of a bother. Bath houses/showers very nice. Beach is gorgeous, changes every day. Great for biking, kayaking, hiking... and of course ponies. Perfect if some in your party like to lay on the beach while others would rather be pedaling or paddling. Not a lot of impressive stuff nearby though if you venture out - you have to make the 30 min drive to OC MD or the 75 min drive to Chincoteague for other attractions or even full restaurants.
Sherif Sami
Very nice beach very clean we loved the horses and deers different experience for sure. Pass is $25 per week. If you have a 4 wheel drive get the pass to take your car by the beach. Be patient to go in. It took us more than an hour to pay the fees. Once you are in it is not crowded because it is huge.
Ray Trusk
Great place to camp. Be sure to get electric
Mary Braiterman
Wonderful place, well maintained. This place has camp hosts that volunteer to keep camp sites clean while they are there for a months stay. Thank you to them for all they do to keep this destination safe and comfortable.
Bathhouse is clean, outdoor sinks same. Thank you Maryland state parks!
Ruben Sandoval
This park is a beautiful island to visit. Besides just coming for the beach, you can also catch the wild horses that inhabit this place. Try out some of the water activities on Bayside, walk along the nearby marsh, and see the dune trail. Do all that and then thouroghly enjoy the wonderful beach. You can increase your chances of running into the wild horses that live here by going around. They are really awesome to see.
Robert Doney
Must see. Nature at it coolest. Clean, loads of parking, fun day.
Brittney Weaver
Love traveling here! Close enough for a day trip to the boardwalk in OC, and visit the National Park for some evening crabbing and sunset!
Adjoa Pacheco
Horses are wild and will steal your food. They eat everything including meat. But the beauty of the ocean and nature and my love of horses make it worthwhile also saw dolphins jumping through the ocean waves

Our camp host, Pete was wonderful! He was congenial and super helpful. The bathhouse was very well kept. The outside showers were a welcoming surprise. What a great experience!
Minsoo Jo
Beautiful beaches that are very, very clean on an island full of various wildlife. Bath houses are maintained well, and they get hot water. Staff and volunteers are welcoming and helpful made this place even better. Definitely coming back.

Ocean. Ponies. Bay. This place is pure magic and definitely worth the trip. We greatly enjoyed walking into the water on the bay side where it is just a couple feet deep. Lots of people picnicking and enjoying the day. The ocean beach is clean and beautiful but crowded in the summer. We greatly enjoyed all the raised boardwalk trails where we saw birds, crabs, and turtles! Sadly we did not see any ponies in the green spaces but we saw many on the roads in and out! Beautiful place.

This place is absolutely beautiful from the beaches, camp grounds and trails. It offers everything one could imagine from crabbing, fishing and digging for clam. One of the main attractions the Wild Horses (Ponies) are simply majestic! I plan to return for the pony crossing with camera in hand. The beach area was remarkably clean and well maintained. There were several life guards and rescue personnel surveying the beach for any abnormalities, either in the lifeguard tower or roving the beach on ATVs. The wash station and restrooms were very convenient to the beach. For those who forget the beach umbrella and chairs, don't fret, you can rent at the beach. There is also a gift store if you desire to get a souvenir or two. Please plan your next outing to this amazing park! You will not be disappointed.
Kevin Olsavsky
On a cycling event we stopped at Assateague and were lucky enough to see wild horses - up close & personal!
Timothy Donten
Absolutely Beautiful. Came back from the beach and the horse's were behind my truck.
D'Anne Weitzman
The beach is magical at sunset. Can be very crowded even off season
Love the ponies. They'll come right into your camp sight, and sometimes decide to stay a bit.
S Johnson
The beach was nice as usual but we came for the horses!! There was a family ending and evening stroll as we drove past and although they were gentle we definitely made sure to keep our distance. It’s plenty of campground, flora, and fauna for the entire family to enjoy.
Parker N
One of the coolest places around! Its so cool to see wild horses! We counted about 25 of them all day. Just due to virus we waited to get to the booth about 1.5 hours. But totally worth it. Lots to do once inside. There are viewing areas, beaches, fishing and crabbing spots. Off roading trails! Great way to spend a day!
Mandy Michels
Great place anytime, but especially to get away from the larger crowds of OCMD. Clean, well maintained, and beautiful.
Jennifer Ventola
What an amazing place to visit. Beautiful beaches, great kayaking, hiking.
William Bartell
Honor system payment. Not knowing tried to pet a pony, and was warned immediately by a local that they bite and to avoid them. I'm sure there were dozens of signs saying so, but I didnt read them in time. Bath house was great, showers were cold. Setup ur blanket just below the dunes if the tide is coming in. Lots of surfers early in the morning.
My Hanitizer
An impressive spot to slow down, bond with the nature, swim, surf and have a blast in this unique space that feels so natural and wonderful. We had to come here and see the wild horses, but the delightful people working there combined with thw facilities deliver every time. Come and see for yourself.
Jennifer Crown
This was our second time visiting. It’s nice to take a slow drive through to see the horses. We also love walking the beach. We had a lot of fun.
Aleida Gallangos
My favorite place for camping, so wild and so romantic at the same time. One of the best places to see clearly the milky way, sunset, sunrise, moonrise, moonset and foggy morning. I love the wild horses as first attraction but also is possible to see deers, rabbits and others wild life. The sounds of the night and the bonfire in front of the sea are so delightful.
Stuart Rhodes
This was by far the best beach to go to with the family in Maryland. We went 3 times and loved every trip. There is so much to explore and the wildlife is beautiful. Camping is a must on the island, if you never have, you definitely should.
Alysha Danner
One of the most beautiful, tranquil, and inexpensive (our camping was less than $30/night) places on the east coast! Great for kids n parents, lots to do n see, get out and see Nature's beauty! Ponies do roam the entire island, they are to be treated as wild animals, do not approach as they can kick, bite or run you flat! They are not domesticated!
Kelly Schott
Beautiful, but the rangers were terrible when we arrived. We'd never been there, drove 12 hours total to get there, and it was 7 or 8pm, so it was getting dark but not insanely late. Got rude with us when we were looking to buy firewood. I tried to pull into the rangers station where I saw someone drive a four wheeler, and instead of helping me figure out where to go, he told me "Well the firewood isn't here, but if your car gets stuck in the sand, you're on your own." Lacked proper labeling and it's just expected that you're a seasoned camper.
In general, the ocean was beautiful, we did see horses, and the campsite and bath houses are maintained well. There is a large sand hill between the campsite and the ocean, so you need to be physically able to walk up loose sand if you would lime to go to the beach.
Do your research before going, have proper equipment for your tent, like long stakes and a secure rainfly to help block some of the heavy winds. And SECURE YOUR FOOD and don't throw food items into the fire ring. Not only because of the horses, but the seagulls will harass you!
Deanna Bredbenner
Beautiful Federal park with paths for biking and walking and enjoying the beautiful ponies and other wildlife that inhabits the the island. Incredible beach with the best sand.
Corey Galvin
Just absolutely nice!! I didn’t get to see the horses tho, but they are there. No trash on the beach, would definitely go back
Brian Devlin
Nice sandy place to visit for a day at the beach. Bring a chair, sunblock, an umbrella and water. It's very relaxing as long as there's wind and it's coming from the east off the ocean. The bugs will eat you alive if there's no breeze or it's coming from the west. I've found no amount of bug spray, even those designed for the tropics, can save you from the hoards of horse flies and other biting bugs if the wind/breeze is calm or westerly.
Clinton Fazekas
Like perfectly trained models, beautiful wild horses arose from the sand and posed for us both at sunset and sunrise as if on call.. They were as peaceful as could be while they chased crabs and enjoyed the warm ocean waters.. A truly awesome experience..
Dozens of campers and fellow onlookers snapped photos and got as close as a few feet away while these majestic animals paid no attention and went about their morning and evening..
I've been around horses my entire life and to see them so free and unrestricted was definitely worth the short drive from Ocean City and the wait for the "show" to start.. The pictures speak for themselves, no filters, no editing.. just awe inspiring..

We were excited to book 4 nights of camping here, a very special place with Wild horses roaming and powder white sand beach. Unfortunately, we had to leave after severe wind storm, but we hope to return one day.
Corey
We loved this park. We visited for two nights and wished we had two weeks. The only down side is the lack of shade, the poor quality fire wood for sale and that it. The pros include a fantastic location, wonderful beach, interesting wild life (birds, hares, ponies, deer, butterfly's etc) , great facilities (fantastic bathrooms, sites and shops) and great staff, one thing we really loved was the out door showers and built in dish washing locations.
When we checked in the staff was very help full giving us pleanty of information on the park, the horses, our site the beaches and the store. We then found our site with great beach access and close to the dish washing area (a great feature more parks need) and bathrooms. We then spent the next two days hiking the beach, watching the ponies, swimming ,and generally having a great time. Some good things to know are that the park sells ice (big bags, small and blocks) and fire wood(not very good), the ponies can be a bit assertive and may toss your site, the sun is intense plan accordingly. If you don't mind not having life guards swim by your camp site much less crowded same great beach. Another recommendation is to get up to catch sun rise, and at sun set walk the beach often the ponies are down to cool off very cool to see. I cannot recommend this place enough we will be back.
Maleah Morsey
Assateague is the best place to go to the beach all year round. Everyone who works there are such the sweetest people. I also feel safe when I am around the life guards because I know they mean business. All of the wild life is treated very well and is safe. I am a local and I go there all the time during the winter too. I like to just sit in the sand and just have a relaxed moment. Highy recommend going it is so worth it.
Stacy Burr
I love camping here, and it is beautiful. The horses are amazing and camping here is a wonderful experience. There are a ton of mosquito's and you are sure to get a sunburn. This year the people on golf carts were extremely rude to us and others, but I really hope this is not going to be a regular thing. They have all been so nice in the past.
ankit mahto
Amazing atmosphere and clean beach. We camped at the designated campsite which can be reserved through its website. Clean restrooms and well paved sites. It has a fire grill and a picnic table. We were only 100feet away from the beach (campsite and beach is divided by a sand dune).
Must watch sunrise and we were lucky enough to capture moon rise as well.
I assure you that you will
Be visited by the wild horses during night so better keep all your food items locked in the car.
Bhalinder Singh (Balwin)
Lovely time of year to visit when the mosquitoes are away.
Birton Hawkins
It's a fun get away with lots of beach. The best time to go is late September early October. There are less people if you want to avoid a crowded camp ground. But no matter all the people are very nice.
Othman Alsefyani
Perfect camping site. Very clean restrooms
Edward Kindel
Very cool beach and the visitors center was very informative.
Jim Deibert
Used senior national park pass, rode beautiful bicycle paths, saw lots of horses/ponies
Nancy P
I love it here. Peaceful, and you can buy food,an a gift shop as well, in season. Bathroom facility.Out of state 6$ per person instate 4$.enjoy!! No cost outta season .
Sabik Thazhathethil
I was on my way to Ocean city and I accidentally took a wrong exit. I saw the board Assateague State Park, which I thought would be just a park. Nevertheless, I decided to go and see what's happening there. The beautiful curved bridge to the Island and white sand dunes was unexpected. Cleaner than Ocean city and some horses will give an additional touch to the photos you take. Overall, good experience.
Jennifer Dunn
We love this place! So peaceful and beautiful.
Nicole Kominski
One of our favorite state parks to visit. We try to come here often during the spring and summer. Always fun to see the ponies. They have quite a bit of activities for campers if your interested. Stargazing is nice during a clear night.
Chris Powers
Words cannot describe the beauty here...
This place is so special to me!
Do yourself and your loved ones a favor and book your reservations asap for an experience you will never forget!
This was our first time putting up our new 'yurt' tent as well! Pictures included.
If you like the beach, nature trails, camping, wildlife, including wild ponies and deer, (although we never saw any deer) and birds, birds, birds, or rivers teeming with life, you will find something to enjoy here at Assateague State Park!
Christine Goida
My family would vacation here when I was a kid and now my mom and dad volunteer as camp hosts for a whole month during the summer. I visit as often as possible (I'm from PA so it's a 4-5 hour drive). Wild horses + camping + beach = heaven! My daughter calls it The Beach as if there is no other one!
The bathhouses are new as of the last few years. There are outdoor and indoor showers. Be sure to protect yourself from the sun. We wear UV shirts, it's not worth the bikini look. You will burn. Wear good bug spray once the sun starts to set, the mosquitos can be a pain! But the campfire and stars are worth it! You can see so many stars on the beach at night, great telescope spot. Listen to rules from camp host & rangers.. keep your food where ponies can't get it (they are way too smart), stay back from ponies and other wildlife, FOLLOW ONE WAY and SPEED LIMIT signs!! I can't tell you how many people we saw going wrong way and too fast this year. Dangerous for little kids on bikes and wildlife.
The state park is beautiful!! We love it! I hope you come to camp and share in the beauty of nature with us!!
Phillip Johnson
Beautiful place for families. Lots of horses all over and the beach is perfect sandbars on the ocean allow you and the lil ones to travel far. Just remember the beach and state park have separate fees if you want to enter them.
E M
Very windy so if your camping smaller tents work better . Ours broke 😥 mid way on one side I had 3 entrances. Horses are just beautiful they mind their business ❤️😊. Beautiful place to visit. I drove 4hrs there and recommend it for families . …
Tina Mack Becker
Absolutely love this place! There are so many different bands (horse families) to watch, especially the young ones grow. Such majestic animals. But, when there, please respect the island rules, as we are the visitors, this is the ponies home!!!
Maria Hidalgo Dolan
The Maryland State Campground is amazing. The place is serene, quiet, clean, magical! The other campers are friendly. The bathrooms are newly renovated and modern. The beach is easily accessible from many points!
ishwor marahatta
It is a beautiful island only 25 min away from ocean city. They have wild horse and beautiful beach. The parking was little confusing buut there was a nice gentleman behind me who helped me to figure out how to pay for it. It is 5 dollar for out of state resident. You can put money in an envelope and drop it on the Honor box. We enjoyed our time both at the park and the beach.
Xander Skye
Beautiful state park! I love seeing the wild horses while other parks like Yellow Stone have Bisons, Alaska have Bears, this park have horses and if you love birds, this is a haven for bird lovers. Endemic and migratory birds come here depending on the season.
I came here camping for 2 days this winter to relax and spend time away from the city, i did get the solitude. Very few people came here and the beach was empty. I was the lone soul.
Park is huge and many places to go! The wild horses usually are in the marsh land and sometimes in the developed areas like the picnic area and camping areas as they like to graze at the grasses in those area.
KJ's train run
This was really awesome! I never saw wild horses roam the beach before. I'm glad we decided to go to the state park after going on the boat ride. The park rangers are a little uptight with something's.
Scott Taney
I have been here a half dozen times now and always love it. The horses and the beach are wonderful. I really want to drive on the beach someday but the 90$ permit is a little steep if you don't take advantage of that more than once or twice. Also the 25$ pass to park is steep if you don't go to the beach everyday and get the most out of it.
Steffanie Hamrick
The campsites are always clean and the bathrooms are well maintained. I would be careful staying in B lot unless you plan on bringing bikes because it’s a long walk to a restroom, but otherwise well worth it. Been going to Assateague for years and have had no issues. Love the wild horses and clean beaches!
Neysan Sturdivant
Flies can make the day tough, but the beach is worth it. It's a beautiful little area that's not overcrowded and has plenty of good shells. We saw many horseshoe crab shells washed up too! There is a state park fee to enter the park but you can buy a yearly pass that lets you into all MD state parks if you go often to this or other parks. Otherwise pay cash to get in as the credit card line takes forever
Thomas Testa
Visited the beach and took a tour.... The drive and walk were great, and definitely for those looking for a glimpse or long look at wild ponies/horses.
The beach was an interesting mix of shells and crabs and gulls.... A good experience if you're looking to avoid the crowds on the OC beaches, and certainly for shell seekers very nice. There is a bar that makes the undertow a little unpredictable and it can surprise you with the u shape in the middle, but the water is not overly fierce by any means.
I was looking for a place that wasn't as brimming to keep social distancing intact and found this fit the bill.
A couple of notes, it isn't free but may be worth it for the fewer people there. There are swaths of the beach that only has life guards swimming, jogging, driving through, so some of the dare devil's may think twice with less of a safety net.
The people collecting the fees are knowledgeable and willing to answer your questions, but PLEASE come back around and don't hold up the car line when getting a ticket. A lot of the wait are people asking opinion oriented questions and it just takes time..... The rest behind you in line are really not happy in the twenty or thirty minute query fest.
Also, the only thing I will say is there are some people who seem to think the beach is a big garbage can for their personal use.... No.... It is not. Please be respectful and clean up after yourself.
Dinara G
I just love this park and the campground on the premises. There many wild horses can be on road, parking lot, campground, beach.
Beach is not very crowded.
There are picnic tables and barbecue grills if someone wants to cook.
Great place for a great price!
Highly recommended!
Kevin Pelley
Best place to stay on the Maryland beach. Our site was rustic with no electricity, water or sewer. But our RV was cool enough at night to open the windows and enjoy the sea breeze. The beach was clean, and so were the comfort stations. And the horses! They walked right through our campsite.
Jennifer Shaffer
If you love camping and the beach, this is the state Park for you!! The camp sites are right behind the dunes which means beach access is close and you can hear the waves crashing at night. Great way to fall asleep! The bath houses are clean and they have warm water showers. They also have electrical outlets in the bath houses which is great for charging your phone quickly since only a few campsites have electric hookups. Generators are allowed but have to meet specific low noise requirements. Every site has a fire ring and picnic table. It does get pretty windy here, so be sure to steak down your tent or easy up! Very enjoyable seeing the wild horses and other wild life. The horses will and do raid your food, if it's not secured in your vehicle or camper. My only complaint is that there is very little privacy between camp sites. Everything else is fantastic at Assateague State Park!!! I look forward every year to time with my family here! If I could give it 10 stars, I would!!!⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Kevin Kearns
It's like the desert, but with water and ponies! It's hot, did I mention it's hot? Ponies have a tendency to nap in your campsite. If you got a Smoky fire they will circle around it. All in all nice place to visit, p probably will not be camping there again.
Mass
Amazing spot! Scenic, family oriented, and clean. Park rangers were knowledgeable. Firewood and ice available all day and night (after 6 when ranger station closes you need exact change). $3 7lb ice and $5 16lb ice. $5 per bag of wood. Can hear the ocean from your camp site. Definitely need sand or heavy duty steaks. The wind by the beach is serious. Beautiful place! Coming back every year with family and friends. Also ghost crabs on the beach at night. No lifeguards and swim at your own risk! still awesome and beautiful
Elijah Shelnutt
This park is amazing! There is lots to do here with day pass beach visits and long stay camping from RVs to back country sites with hike or kayak approach. The wildlife is abundant and the landscape is beautiful with hiking trails through the woods on the bayside. Just keep your distance with the horses and come prepared for the mosquitoes!
jerzc nate
This is a beautiful park and beautiful piece of land. You can relax on the beach or drive around looking for wild horses. Speed limit is 25mph please drive it cause you never know where the horses are. They post a sign stay 40 ft away from the horses. Horses bites and kick but you know people are stupid. That is how we get great videos to laugh at also some of the best pictures and videos.
On this day the horses where out on the road grazing they are some beautiful animals. We slowly drove by pictures are taken. Not only can you fish relax on the beach you can chill with horses. Now people when you are on the boardwalk step away and take in some nature it's definitely worth it.
Amy Miskiewicz
We went to see the wild ponies. Traffic on the holiday weekend was backed up for miles. We did see the ponies so our goal was met. It was too busy to even attempt to get into the park and see any of the trails for hiking. We’d love to go back eventually and enjoy the park and maybe even the campground.
H Hosier
We loved it here! The wild horses were great fun to watch and the birding and hiking was fantastic even for December.
We hope to come back and camp here someday.
Dennis Nardi
The park was beautiful. The beach is huge, and there's a large portion that is essentially only accessable if you are camping. The bathroom facilities were top notch. We also saw a ton of horses wandering though the park.
Hawaii K-O
Love this place. Only 4 stars because they have only one electric loop (hard to get into) but otherwise no hookups. But the bathhouses are great (on the new loop H as of 2019, former loop I) too. But I guess if they had full hookups it might be even harder to get into than it already is if you don't plan ahead. 😉 …
Roxanne Santiago
Always love going over to see if we see any 🐎 horses. It means alot to do it with my children and grandchildren. Keeps my pappy (Benjamin ) close to me. We would always make a couple trips over there when we were down there. …
Rachel Snell
It was $20 to park on the National Park side with cool trails. Got to see the wild horses and some herrings. Some of the beaches on this side can be extremely private and peaceful, at least after labor day.
Patrick Ouellette
Wild horses, ocean waves, camping - what's not to love? This year they started replacing picnic tables with picnic tables with built in "horse boxes" to keep your stuff safe from the horses!
Beverly Hendricks
Worth a visit especially for those who read Margaurite Henry's horse books as a child. We spent time with friends at the campground which was very nice. The Assateague wild horses could be seen hanging around all over the place. They maintain the horse population at about 125 through birth control. The beach has beautiful nearly white sand.
John Schilling
Very nice, clean beach. Not too many people. Didn't see any ponies. Food little visitors center. Air conditioned, but no munchies or pop machine. Water fountains and bathrooms tho. Really a nice place to kill three hours
Cathryn Smith
Beautiful area. Nice sized campsites and terrific bathhouses. Only downside is the lack of shade trees but seeing the wild horses more than made up for that.
J Iskander
Gorgeous park. Great for families and outdoor r&r. The ponies are a load of fun.
Megan DeMarco
Beautiful place. Just driving around we saw horses all over. We only went to see the horses and made the mistake of paying to go onto the beach. We didn't have anything with us for the beach and it was no refunds so we just turned around.
karishma kamal
A nice place to go to if you want some relaxing time. Got to see the horses which the island is known for while driving through. The beach is also very less crowded and quiet with all the facilities.
Kimberly Young
We had great weather and the beach population was sparse. The wild ponies were the only pest. Put your food away and you mitigate disruption
Brittany Roring
This is our favorite camping spot. Beautiful beach, nice clean bathrooms, indoor and outdoor showers. And it's fun to see the ponies come through.
WTF world videos rukm
OMG. This place, and swimming with Manatees are the top things on my list of best things I have ever done in my life! The horses will wander right through the campgrounds in the evening and during the night. One was like 8 feet from our campfire! Incredible experience, I actually cried when I left - still dunno why, but I just have to return here! The weather was harsh here for a few days - and there was constant wind and waves crashing on the other side of the dunes. Socked in with fog 2 nights that week, a storm was offshore. Wildly beautiful, almost Stark landscape at times. Drive slowly and with extreme caution at night, it's dark out there when there's no moon! The horses are captivating. You will fall in love! Best pony viewing close to camp is late afternoon it seemed...
Dustin Luttrell
I imagine this place is packed in the summer but going early on a weekday late season was the best idea ever. Absolutely gorgeous. People...pick up your trash, or any trash you see. It's not overly difficult to be a decent person, and we need all the help we can get to counteract the dumb senseless ones
Robin Sheesley
After all of these years we finally got to see the horses up close. They were BEAUTIFUL!! Stay 40 feet back from them, do not feed or pet them or you could face a hefty fine. The horses will approach you.
Eduardo Steverlynck
Best Beach Camping I’ve been so far in the East Coast. Highly demanded, so plan a year ahead to reserve a spot on a weekend. You are literally camping in the shore, over the sand. You just need to walk 300 feet to be in the sea. Installations are good. The wild horses are a nice addition, but be sure to put all your food inside the car! They do come at night to steal your food!
Mm Qqq
Amazing place to camp. Gorgeous beaches . Amazing wildlife. Campsite bathhouses are CLEAN gorgeous tiled new hot water showers and ckean flush toilets .....the public bathouses had cool water and were not as nice but still a LOT more offered than many state parks.....EMPLOYEES FRIENDLY and very knowledgeable and helpful.....all around terrific location .....national park further down ....vault toilets icy cold showers ....but access to the bayside areas for crabbing kayaking etc
Kathy Davenport
The park is beautiful and the campground is steps to the ocean. I love watching the horses roam free. They do get a little curious around the campers. Great place to camp. The sites are primitive but the have nice clean bathhouses to use on each loop of the campground.
MZLIB
Always beautiful! Beware of the INSECTS! There are many different options as to where on the island you can go. There are bathrooms, showers, ice cream, etc. If you go on the bayside, great clamming & Mussels to be pulled!! Be mindful of the WILD PONIES! They are wild, it’s not a petting zoo & it is their beach. Go to Ocean City if the thought of horses around you is a bother. They roam the beach, THEIR HOME. Enjoy the splendor but please respect the indigenous animals to the land. Great visitors center right before the beach, with water tanks of all of the different sea creatures (great for families).
Anjie Wolchesky
Beautiful, clean, well kept. Visitor Center was really nice and a must visit. We visited the National Park in MD. We were a little disappointed that the Pony Express Grill and gift shop were closed but I guess it was to be expected since we visited off season. We saw the wild horses roaming around on the bike trail. Plenty of parking $20./a day or $40./year per vehicle. Great place for a family with everything from camping on and off the beach to, hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing, crabbing, and clamming. Plenty of outdoor grills, picnic tables, showers and restrooms. You can purchase an off road permit for $90. good for one year from purchase date. But be sure you have the necessary off road equipment ie; shovel, jack, jack support, tire gauge, and tow rope- strap, chain, or cable. Definitely a place I will be revisiting.
Mateo “Jedi Master”
Great time at this wonderful state park which has much better facilities than the national side. Make sure you pack your bug spray and all things should be great! Highly recommend!
Gordon Eisner
It's the perfect place to get away from the crazy crowds, and commercialism of OC. It's a natural beach with lots of trails and animals too see. Every chance we can we visit. Its $25 to enter but that's good for the week and the beaches are great.
uli Creighton
Barrier island off the coast of Maryland with wild ponies. I was lucky enough to have seen them. Great bird watching and crabbing..
Benjamin Chàgúzàghà
Its worth talking to the park staff because some of those horses have temper and all of them are wild. Its a very nice place and clean. Watch the currents at the beach and be prepared for mosquitos and horse flies, things should be OK though.
Emad Alsagheer
I love Assateague State Park! I have been coming back every year for a few years now. It is my favorite beach in the DMV area and one of the best camping experiences that someone could have.
The showers and bathrooms of the campsites are clean and decent.
(Except for the day beach one, it needs more care since a lot more people use it per-day than the campsites)
Abhishek Sharan
Beautiful place to camp or visit otherwise. If you camp make sure you get campsite on the beach. It is beautiful there. Early morning sunrise is breathtaking. You need to book campsite well in advance as in summers it gets very crowded.
Maria Voronkova
I've been coming here every summer for 4 years already. I love camping just behind the dunes from the ocean. You can hear and smell the ocean from your campsite or walk along the beach any time of day or night. Bathhouses get cleaned daily, water pressure and the temperature are just great. Downsides - almost no shadow, meaning it gets really hot on sunny days and you need to bring something for that. Campground is booked up for half of a year ahead, although I had luck booking several weekdays only a month ahead if people cancel. Also wild horses come and go as they please and may decide to take a nap on your campsite or next to you on the beach. Overall, it's a very special place, most people keep coming here every earlier and a level of comfort is incomparable to what the national seashore has to offer.
Mary Bingaman
Beautiful beach area. Not too crowded. We hiked the half mile trail. Disappointed. There. Basically it was a walk in the woods. We didn't stop at the restaurant,. But definitely will try that next time. Horses weren't around during the 2 hours we were there.
Patti Hoover
One of my favorite spots to watch the sunrise! And getting to see the horses is a plus! Great for families as well!
tammy gibson
We went to the Maryland side of the island. Saw ponies immediately... and often! Groups of them were scattered throughout our drive and were literally everywhere. Scenery during the drive was beautiful as was the beach. Of note: Can drive on the beach for an extra fee. We did not, but the option is available. I was initially surprised at the large number of tent campers present but after experiencing the beach, not surprised at all... and would like to do that myself! It was a very pleasant experience.
Shelly-Ann
I loved the remoteness and the simplicity. It's just an island with a beach. There is nothing more. You have to get off the island for stores, accommodations, and everything else. It's very popular, so the line is long to get into the park. There is no expeditious process. Patience is key. The experience is worth the wait, though. If you love horses, then that's what you'll see...WILD HORSES. They are not afraid to come out, even at night. I love the fact that they offer camping on the beach. This is where they lost a star. These amenities attracts a lot of flies due to the smell. They are merely a hole in the ground. So, they reek. The shower area lacks adequate drainage, so there is a lot of standing water on the floor from previous usage. Besides that, it is spectacular. My only word of caution, make sure to bring Deep Woods bug spray for the biting flies. Once you put that on, you'll have the time of your life. It's absolutely beautiful here.
Ali Zacker Gale
Never actually camped because we stay in Chincoteague but if you want to see the wild horses up close this is the place. Herons and ponies. Clean bathrooms.
Carl Estill
Beautiful park with wild horses to see.
Lots of white sandy beach. A must do and see.
Travis Johnson
This is by far one of the best beach state parks on the east coast. The campground is a little crowded, but the beach makes up for it. I went the weekend of June 9th, and the biting flies are not out yet luckily. There are plenty of bike trails and this is a great place for biking, kayaking, walking on the beach, and swimming.
DuRaMaX
We enjoyed our stay here. Got to see the wild horses and the sunrise over the surf. Would be nice to have a bit more seclusion as the campsites are really packed together. Lots of people
Steven Damiano
It was something fun to do and what an amazing beach, but the horses pretty much do what ever they want and go anywhere they want, don't forget they are still wild animals!
JT Eastwood
Wonderful place for rustic camping. The horses were amazing to spend a few days with. The bugs were not fun to be with. The bay use the best place to relax. Toss in your chair and cool off.
Sasanka Sharma
I love how they maintain the park. The bay side is amazing for kayaking and depth is just few feet for miles. The camping is in the ocean side and loved every bit of it . At night horses showed up and ate our donuts , they were not scare of us or the noise we were making.
Chantry Gilbert
Assateague State Park is a fantastic place to camp, or spend a day at the beach. There are wild horses, beautiful sandy beaches, and lots of great campsites, all fairly close to shared bath-houses, giving you access to showers, toilets, and running water. This place is absolutely amazing, and I can't recommend it highly enough.
GG
Love this place. A great time with family or friends bring bicycle to explore the island. Great way to enjoy nature at its finest. The horses, thier behavior is fun to watch. Jim and Diane the host for our section are top notch. They're knowledgeable about the island, any questions you have about the horses Diane can answer almost anything you throw at her. Jim tips for where to go find clams or go on a hike was very helpful. This should go on your bucket list if you love camping. Have fun.
Chris Mixon
Was so grateful I got to come to this place me and the wife had a blast it is way better private beach sort of less people than over on the inlet and theres so many cool shells and these amazing horses to watch and take pictures of cant wait to take the kids back there soon...
J Mouch
The Horses were lovely to see and the beach wasn't very crowded on a Saturday afternoon. Definitely visit this beach before the main Ocean City beach. ⛱ 😎 …
Cody Robinson
Been going here for 30 years now honestly one of the best state parks I've ever been to! The bath house is constantly cleaned, the beach is beautiful, it's well within distance to Berlin or Ocean City, both of which have many attractions, it's pet friendly, and honestly I'll probably keep going the rest of my life!
Odalys Cruz Martin
Didn't see any ponies but the beach was nice with a strong breeze. Small Gift shop and Cafe on grounds.
Allan Lin
I stayed in camp spot d90 during late may early June, it was a fantastic experience for my first car camping trip. Firewood and fire starters are located at the ranger station, the facilities had bugs, but were overall clean. During my time there, the bugs were active only really during dusk and dawn, during the day I wasn’t bothered at all. You can see wild horses throughout the day, the fire ring had a grill and was easy to use. The facilities have an outside hand washing/dish washing area with a trash can. My personal site had some ant farms, but they were never an issue during my stay, the ocean was just a short 1-2 minute walk away
G Raines
Amazing park. Wonderful beach and beach camping. Get a good understanding of the difference between the Maryland State Park (small, but nice) the Maryland side of the Assateague National Park. Not the same. The horses are in the national park.
Ann Marie Geremino
Absolutely beautiful! Love the beach, never crowded! Horses are a plus, great neighbors to be respected.
Ronald Mason
Fun place to go went during winter so wasn't busy. Good place to hunt for sea shells! 😀 …
Sophia Lejtman
Great adventure! Gorgeous sunset and stargazing on a clear day. Had a BBQ by the bay side. Be sure to hide your snacks; the ponies are not shy about helping themselves!
Anastasiia Panchoshna
It’s one of our favorite parks on East Coast. Definitely will come back again and again 🦅🐴♥️Hopefully next time will not forget a mosquito spray 😂🙏🏻 …
Maria Morales
Always a great stay. Weather was perfect. Love watching the horses enjoying the sunset on the beach.
Wendy F
Love the beach and wild horses in this park. $20 per car to get in and park, but the pass is good for seven days. Water is not clear, but it's not dirty either. There are sand bars that go out pretty far, so it's like having a huge pool that you can safely swim around in.
Christine Derby
We had a beautiful walk along the beach. The day rate is $5 per person. There are also trails. The state park is located on the northern half of the island. The national park is on the southern half which is separate admission.
Lisa Joyce
Oh my goodness.... what a beautiful place! Seeing horses roam free is absolutely stunning. The beach is beautiful as well as the marsh lands. Just stunning 😍 …
OLGA
Beautiful park! Amazing wildlife and nature! The beach area is not as nice as used to be! Too much trash around , too many dogs! Unfortunately, owners do not care too much to clean up after their pets!
Barbara Webster
Beautiful. The horses are beautiful. See how some tourist don't listen. They were headed for the ponies.
Craig Leininger
Great place to visit and possibly see the wild ponies. The beach is clean and easily accessible, there are facilities close by. The state park is also fun to walk through and explore and.learn about the islands history
Karen Jones
This place is incredible! The campers are so friendly. The camp ground and bathrooms are clean. It's so peaceful!! The beach isn't crowded at all. Only those that camp are allowed in.
Heather Hicks
Absolutely Amazing little area. can not believe how clear the water was ans how clean the beach was. first time ever there and my 2 kids loved it. We were wishing to see horse but didn't see any on the beach.. its ok just a reason to go back
Connie Barnes
Amazing!! Period. We camped there n there were stations that had cute things for kids. Horses came right to the tent!
There was a welcome site camper for any info or concerns or just plain jibby jab if u like.
Walt Cofer
Really nice family oriented beach. Very clean and quiet. Plenty of parking.
Skyler Westebbe
Assateague is absolutely wonderful. Great visitors center, wild horses, good waves. What more could you ask for? If you want to camp here, make sure you make a reservation or get here early. The spots go VERY fast
Melisa LaBadie
We've been camping here for 20 years or more and still love it every time. The showers have been improved which is great. The sites have plenty of room and are usually pretty close to the bath house. A quick drive to Ocean City.
Michael Short
We camped here in late June with no hookups. the temperature was great, we saw the feral horses when we arrived and during the sunrise as well. The beaches are much less crowded than Ocean City or Fenwich Islands. Great place to just relax and enjoy the beach.
Tanya Burns
Wow this park/beach was beautiful, clean, fun and the horses were amazing! We had a wonderful time riding the waves!
Christine Tustin
This place is just the best. Beach, camping, horses. It’s just the best. Highly recommend the sunrise over the ocean. So magical!
Please pick up your trash before leaving and leave it better than you found it :)
Maria Boichin
The beach is fine, but $5 per person is not worth it given all other beaches around are free. We went to see the horses but with all the people they are not coming around. The beach further on toward Ocean City is empty and nice: you can see crabs and special birds.
Sally Alvarado
I went a couple of days ago just to see the sunrise. It was very foggy, but beautiful. I couldn’t see/find any wild horses or ponies, I guess it was too early. It was a nice experience with a nice walk to meditate and relax. There are showers to rinse the salt water and restrooms- which were dirty! Didn’t expect to find a dirty toilet that early in the morning. For everything else, it was worth the drive leaving home at 3am to be there at 6am.
Pranav Bende
Great place, beautiful wild horses, too humid though, take something for that, also, don't forget bug sprays
Carolina Schaffer
Amazing place... perfect for spending a weekend and enjoy nature. The park has a great structure for camping, it is clean and has indescribable natural landscapes. And of course, the wild horses give an extra charm to the place! :)
Phyllis Greene
Ponies were out & beach wasn't crowded. Beautiful day with family. Unfortunately there were people ignoring numerous signs warning them not to feed or pet the ponies.
Will Reed
Very nice. Clean bathhouses. Convenient location. The beach is a lot less crowded. Horses are fun to see up close.
David G
I loved the natural beauty of the area. The wild horses roam free, but keep their distance. The beach is beautiful and you must climb a slight hill to get onto it.
Andy Mauer
I loved visiting here as a child and that hasn't stopped. It's a beach, yeah, just like many others. But the visitors are much friendlier, the state employees are super friendly, and the facilities are clean. The beach is clean (guessing the quality of visitors has something to do with that) and really isn't that crowded - possibly because the only thing to do there is just BEACH 😁
Asiyo Bellema
This place is the perfect get way for family with kids or w/out, for friends and anyone who loves sun and beaches. The scenery is eyegasm 😊
If you lucky you will get to see wild horses. It has public restrooms with clothes changing stalls, open shower place where you can rinse your sand off. All and all it's must visit place
Ps. You've to pay 5$ person to entry to this place. They take cash and credit cards but you've to pay attention to be on lane of credit if paying with credit and same with cash.
Curtis Tanner
Beautiful Horses. Plan to visit again in the spring. Nice beach areas as well.
Rick Campbell
Great family activities presented by park staff. Great community of regular campers each year. Amazing sights, and experiences. The campgrounds, bath houses, and other areas are very well maintained. The staff is very friendly.
Eric & Sandra Smith
This park is easily my favorite place on Earth. We got engaged here and enjoy the tranquility of the bayside. Horses & Sika deer are always a perk to stopping by.
Mike Rogers
The beach was great, easily accessible. Was great to be able to shower afterwards and get changed. Then we took a ride along the bay and checked out some of the ponies...
Jerome Kittles
It's a great place until the liberals that come tenting in the generator allowed areas , I'm currently in the E loop where generator's are allowed from 7am to 10 pm, just got another complaint against me because my generator is on at 5pm to charge my batteries.
There are non generator loops where they could camp but they choose the generator sites and then complain. So the ranger has to come knocking asking why we are running our generators and you can tell that they really know we aren't breaking the rules, they just have to make contact after a complaint, and they said mines pretty quiet compared to others today here. But the beach is awesome and camping is awesome until the Karen's arrive....build back better
Zully Keen
It is worth every penny. The beach is beautiful! Bathrooms with showers, are clean. Umbrellas and chair rentals are available. The visitor center have great information and a small museum and shop in it. Ask to watch the movie it is very informative. We even got to see wild horses and dolphins.
Cherise Ann
This was an awesome place for a day trip. We got great views of the horses while driving around and found a nice area for a picnic lunch. The restrooms were clean, they had outdoor showers for rinsing sand off your feet, picnic tables, and a reasonable amount of parking. Keep in mind it's $5 to park at the state park entrance (cash only) and I think $20 to get into the National Seashore area. But, I think the fees are worth it to help with up-keep and I'd gladly go again.
Debbie Piner
Our first time at this private beach. What a great time. We got there early morning. Pretty much had the beach to ourselves!
Tyler Smiley
Just a super place to explore! You never know what you'll see from one visit to the next, and that's what makes it exciting to go back over and over.
Nodis Respect
Doesn't get much better than this. Absolutely beautiful and serene. Wild horses on the beach, camping on the beach. We loved it until the storm came in. Always be prepared for anything and go to enjoy yourself. Future summer destination for my family for sure. Plus ocean city isn't far away if you want a little more of the businesses scene.
Jennifer Butt
I went for a 4 hour bike ride. So much wildlife so much to take in. We saw about 30 horses including 2 young. We had an awesome time period
Dr350sn43
Beautiful beautiful beautiful place saw some 🐎 and relaxed on the beach …
Travis Hickey
Beach is always nice and clean. Kinda busy on the day we went. Found a ton of shells.
Carolyn Fournier
The ponies were super cute and no one bothered them. It was a great first visit!
Janet Gilroy
Great beaches. The water was great and jumping the waves is always a blast. Chair and umbrella rentals are worth it. Great family place.
Leslie
It's $5 a person to get in. We didn't see horses this time but it was also very full. The beach is clean and very beautiful. We always visit when going to ocean city.
jayrock faltin
Got to see lots of horses today and chat with park rangers
Shavonn Kravets
Beautiful beaches, shower houses, and island. Loop H was very family friendly and the horses were not afraid or startled.
Jincan Zhang
CAMPING IS CLOSED! We stayed at national seashore instead. It is right next door to the state park. We read the other comments about primitive camping sites, good shower rooms, entrance fee that works for a week. However, none of those existed. No camping open for the state park. The national sea shore camp site was open, and they charge by day, no showers. I think everyone is talking about the national seashore. below are pictures of in the seashore. We saw horse and deer in one day. The horse tried to eat our lunch at our picnic table. We refused feeding them.
Eileen Dudley
A beautiful place to have a wedding ceremony!
Vicki Jenkins
If you're lucky you will see horses. This year (May 2020) we saw a lot and even saw the new colt with his momma
Nikki Brooks
Great beach, not too congested even on holidays. I haven't yet spotted any wild horses in the beach, but they are in the surrounding areas.
Taurez Bard
Absolutely beautiful, very clean and just a overall great place to visit for anyone who loves scenery and nature. The only thing I wish was different is there should be one flat fee for the whole land not one for state side (which to be fair is only 5 per person) and one for federal side (25 per car). Still extremely worth it. Bonus...Wild Horses!!
Nicole Leigh
Absolute heaven!! So clean and peaceful. Loved getting to see the horses in their natural habitat. This will definitely be a recurring trip!
Lisa Marie
We love it here. Drove around for about 45 minutes, saw about 12 different horses, lots of different birds, and 6 deer. We come here every time we visit Ocean City Maryland.
Austin Mcfarland
Omg.. Amazing.. Beautiful views and the horses. I woke up to them all around my tent and van
Linda Strine
Very nice. Beautiful Sunrises and Sunsets. Can see nature. The horses 🐎 are so cute. Made my day to see them. …
Liam Donovan
They say if you lock eyes with a horse while camping at Assateague, your soul is trapped there forever.
Had a blast! Would love to come back aoon.
Matt Mullen
Wild Horses! Park is well kept and the visitor center was very cool, with some exhibits for the kids (including a touch pool with different aquatic wildlife), an informative video about the wild horses, and staff willing to answer questions. Best part was obviously the horses. We explored for over an hour and finally got lucky and found a pack of 4 horses.
Sai Kathu
Well maintained beach, wasn't crowded even during the summer season, rangers were kind and helpful throughout our stay, but lookout for wild horses that may come to your campsite.
Randy Scull
Great place if you want to get away from all the busyness of Ocean City. No boardwalk, shops, or restaurants. Just bring your own food, chairs, etc. and relax. Also, if you have T-Mobile or Google Fi , they have zero service here.
Jessica Dabashinsky
Beautiful beaches! Love getting the chance to see the wild horses!!
Carl Allen
Beautiful area, loved the dunes. Got to see some wild horses too which was a bonus. A little out of the way but definitely worth the detour if you have time.
Ben Neustein
Great place to go to the beach with multiple nice beach houses. Great kayaking, fishing, and crab fishing. Nice campgrounds.
Anand Kumar
Great park with a very nice, clean and quiet beach. No too crowded and eady to get to and easy access from the parking lot.
Anthony Atha
Beautiful island with wild horses. My only complaint is the fee to get in is so high, $25 just for a quick visit.
Lia Rinearson
Prettiest beach I’ve seen on the East Coast yet. No horsies showed up, but there was lots of evidence they were near by. Beautiful waves, an amazing sunset. I just wanted more information about the islands most intriguing residents.
Patrick Taylor Jr.
Very nice beaches. Thrilling to see the wild horses on the beach!!!
Jodi Valdiserri
The water was a beautiful blue. We got to see a few horses. I will definitely look into camping there.
Douglas Neiderer
Great camping...
Loved it there
Rebecca Wood
This place is is cool and beautiful you can walk with the horses but your not supposed to feed them or touch them and I dont I think its nice to keep them wild thats what makes this place so cool
Carol Peterson
Absolutely loved it but OMG the flies. They're beyond obnoxious and bug spray means absolutely nothing to these vampires. Otherwise an awesome experience.
Sally
If you like camping you will enjoy this.A good family friendly vacation. Wild horses roam freely on the campground which is a barrier island. Be sure to follow the instructions...DO NOT FEED THE HORSES or get too close!!! Also be sure to tie down your Coolers. The horses are masters at opening them and stealing your food. Think of them as oversized sea gulls... and just be smart about encountering wild animals. That aside it is a lot of fun to watch them. The beach itself is beautiful. Ghost crabs come out at night near the shoreline. We saw an American bald eagle fly by. Amazing...
The campground has public showers and toilets in each loop. There is a family shower. There is also a place to wash your dishes and some of the loops have electricity. Nice walking and biking paths. A lot of people seem to come year after year here. Saw a lot of people doing tent camping in addition to RVs. If you're going to camp in a tent ,I recommend 10 or 12" stakes to pitch the tent.
The bugs are relentless if the bay breeze shifts... But campers already know this. Pack bug spray , sunscreen and a hoodie... Also keep things in plastic as everything gets a salty , marshy coating on it.
Derek Springer
Assateague is beautiful and much better than I expected. We came up here to spend on the beach mid afternoon til evening. Beach was very clean and sand was very soft. Least going in September beach wasn't crowded at all. Having a fire on the beach was great too. Seeing the wild horses was very cool to see. Highly recommend if you are ever in the area.
javier wilson
Beach is beautiful and with sand! Lots of mosquitoes after dark. Horses run wild at night which I kind of liked. Kids loved to have the beach just around the corner.
cheryl n
Amazing scenery, beaches and camping! Come for a day or a week. Absolutely stunning!!
Sabina Thorblad
The beach is absolutely beautiful! We did see a few horses driving in the park. Would love to come back and spend more time there.
Kendra Kohler
Amazing, beautiful beaches! Wild horses. Nature at it's most precious! Social distancing enforced. I would give it ten stars if I could. Much more chill and family oriented than Ocean City!!
Matt Johnson
We stayed at the State park and National Park. The State park was nice because they had hot showers and flushable toilets. If you are looking to camp with amenities the State park is for you.
Bry “Bry”
Your vacation isn't complete without a visit here. I always go to the Federal side. Plenty to do. Beaches, camping, picnic and of course, watch the ponies. Water sports equipment like kayak rentals are available as well. Bring your bike!
Kelly
Beautiful, peaceful, with lots to see and do. Wild ponies, gulls, bunnies, crabs...we saw many different kinds of wildlife. Visitors center, Nature center, ranger station. A very well stocked camp store/souvenir store with lots of snacks and any supplies you may need, also has a grill serving breakfast-dinner.
The only drawback is the biting flies. There were so many on the ocean beach. They were not phased by one brand of bug spray we had brought and bit us through thin clothing. A screened canopy to cover your table/picnic area is a must, but I wouldn't go to the beach again without a screened canopy too.
Bayside the flies were much less bothersome.
Claudia Mcgoldrick
Went there mid October. Perfect time to visit. Seing wild horses up close is awesome
Wendy Garone
I loved this park! Sites are nice beachfront or wooded sites. Horses roam the entire property and are beautiful. I would definitely come back again.
Billy Albert
Been going here for years, and plan to keep going. The off season is a lot better for two reasons: mosquitoes and also mosquitoes. As in, there are a tolerable number instead of evening hours being unusable due to the number of bites you'll be subject to.
Carolina Turcios
One of my happy places on earth!
I love the family atmosphere but still quiet enough to relax, the park authorities keep the park/beach very clean and safe, the big highlight of it all is the wild ponies that you can ramdomly see along the beach at sunset hours or at dusk.
Love it! Check out my pictures on my Instagram page @caro_fungrams
Jamie Shimizu
A Must see! Only about 20 mins south of Ocean city. Wild horses roam freely on the Beach and anywhere in the park. One of my favorite places.
Jessica Giattino
Loved it!! Very good beach.....no crowds....social distancing was not a problem😊...horses were amazing …
Blair Wright
Well laid out, ample parking, and easy to get around. I really loved it here. Also, the gorses were easy to find
Oswego Girl
Beautiful drive, saw lots of the wild ponies. Turned around at point of payment since we had no interest in going on the beach.
Pam Ray
Absolutely beautiful....anytime....all year round. I have the yearly park pass for 80 dollars. Access to state parks. ASSATEAGUE the horses , ponies, birds, deer , ATLANTIC OCEAN....DUNES...CAMPING...FISHING...I WILL POST PICS SOON....
Manuel Valcarcel
Super windy but the night sky and horses can't be beat. Get the sites further back in the loops if tent camping to get less sandy sites. Bring sand screws anyway.
Brad Tippett
Good beaches and lots to see and do! Wild horses are a cool sight!
Colleen Richards
Wonderful place to camp! Very well maintained! Peaceful, friendly atmosphere, close to the beach and attractions and, of course wild horses!
Matt Stevenson (Acrossthemapwithmatt.com)
Awesome place to bike and walk. Or sun bathe and swim in the Atlantic. I like park at the visitor center then bike over to the beach. Even when it's crowded it seems pretty safe I've never had bike messed with or anything stolen. I've even left expensive sunglasses on my bike seat for several hours while I swam. There's abundant bird watching opportunitys places to launch kayaks into the bay. A great place to bring your family
Crystal Palmer
Did not get to see any horses at all and it was pretty ocean view and beach walk.
Levi Collins
Best beach in the Delmarva area. Very friendly staff and rangers. The beach is amazing during sunrise. Lots of seashells too. Best beach ever.
Connie Myers
First time going in November! Lovely day
Bernadette Hartman
It's a beautiful beach, and the wild horses are beautiful and amazing! They will bite if you get too close, and they will also steal your food if you leave it unattended, and they are in the area! It's a great place to visit to see nature at its finest!
Brian “Hotsaucedaily”
Very clean and well run Maryland State Park. Showering and bathrooms are spacious and fairly clean.
There's a nice snack bar with lots of menu options typical of a beach stand. Also a small store of souvenirs and camping needs.
Lots of wild ponies to see everywhere. 🐎🐎🐎
The beach is wide with lifeguards on duty in season.
★★★★★
Steve S
Great camping location clean facilities and excellent site locations. Very well managed.
Daniel Cummuta
I come here with my church every year for our annual youth outing. So peaceful and relaxing. All visitors are respectful of each other. And the staff at the nearby restaurant/shop are so sweet and funny. I love coming here. And look forward to it every year.
Gabriela Corbett Mills
A great east coast beach with wild ponies and birds that I’ve never seen anywhere else. Definitely recommend going to the Maryland side if you have dogs! But otherwise Chincoteague is a lovely place to stay and go to the virginia side of the wildlife reserve.
Shelley Elebash
True natural beauty gem! So peaceful & just a wonderful cathartic experience for the soul. Lots of ponies!!
Cecilia G
I'm not sure what the hubbub is about. Not to be a downer it was pretty, it was cool to see the horses but you cannot interact with them and there were three as you see in the picture chilling by the building just being horses. I guess I'm not a horse person and that's okay. It was offseason so we did have the beach to ourselves. Nice ride over from Ocean City
Jonathan Kelley
Beautiful spot in the spring time on sunny days water is Crystal clear and the horses add a great bonus to this beautiful Park.
Kenneth Breckenridge
This is a beautiful island. There is so much wild life to see including the horses.
Ashley Neuder
Best place to view the night sky in Maryland! Ponies are beautiful to spot as well!
Aliyma Muhammad
BREATHTAKING!! My first time!…but I will be back with family!! Book a year in advance if u want an electric site!…or a site period! LOL
Juan Trujillo
Amazing place! We had a great time and all the people where incredibly kind and helpful.
Cheryl Vanvlack
What a great experience everytime! The waves are great! The horses did not disappoint!
J ennifer
Awesome camping experience. Sites level and lots of sand. Clean bath houses and water and dumping station. Very tough to book and get a site but we loved our visit and getting to see the horses. Seemed popular for weekend, but we visited during the week and off season.
Bill Wheatley
Assateague State and Federal Parks are the secret jewel of Ocean City Locals Know More dot com tip...it is a beach and dunes the way God meant us to see it with Wild Ponies and Forestry everywhere! Plenty of Parking, Camping, Bathrooms, Drive on beach with a pass! But remember wild horses bite and yes try to steal your food! A MUST DESTINATION LOCALS TOURISTS 👏EVRRYONE! COME TO FORGET THE MODERN WORLD 🌎AND YOU WILL ESCAPE THERE AGAIN AND AGAIN!
John Joseph
Beautiful well maintained beaches on the Atlantic Ocean. Clean bathroom, shower, and changing facilities. Also has outdoor showers and foot washers. Would definitely return again!
Gael Chiarella Alba
The shore is magnificent no matter the weather. The hot open air showers are to die for at night! This year the horses were all over the campground daily. Great staff. Experience is restful and exciting.
Pallavi Razdan
Its a beautiful and peaceful beach. I went through the MD side, wasn’t able to see any ponies though.
Tiny Mouse
The horses were amazing and the beach was better. I will definitely remember this beach!
Sharon Adams
As a person who grew up reading the misty books this has always been on my bucket list. I was stoked that we actually saw wild horses. They were super close to the road. Then we find more in the marshland. The view was amazing at sunset. Remember your jacket, the temperature gets quite cold quickly.
Ana Banana
Lots of walking trails, lots of photo opportunities, beautiful beaches and wild horses. The park is open a year and well worth the visit regardless of the season.
Kayla Largent
I come here every time I go to Ocean City, it's a must do attraction. It's peaceful and relaxing if you need to get away from the busy boardwalk for a bit!
Theresa Kim
Great use is tax dollars. Loop D is our favorite camp area. Let the wild ponies roam without disturbing them.
Olga Ginzburg
Beautiful park! Stop by at the visitors center before the bridge and the amazing employees can answer all of your questions. It was very helpful! There is a cute gift shop also that we enjoyed!
The park itself is bigger than I imagined and it was hard to see the horses on a hot day! The grounds are beautiful and we really enjoyed the ocean break after driving around for a while.
Can’t wait to come back on a cooler day ☺️
Brian Wallace
Assateague never fails. I love this place. The beach is beautiful and we always get to see the horses. It’s far enough off the beaten path and has only basic amenities, such that the riff raff that plagues Ocean City doesn’t filter over. If you want a calm, serene, clean place to enjoy the beach, this is a great park to visit. There are bike trails. AND for those of you with 4x4’s, you can get a permit to drive on the beach! You can drive all the way to VA if you want to.. it’s awesome! Beachside campsites are available. Campfires on the beach, and morning walks right outside your tent… it’s an awesome experience!
Charity Danjczek
Reservations MUST be made a year in advance and are booked within minutes of the sites becoming available at 9am, but if you can get a site it's a GREAT place to camp
Tim Lukens
Ponies!! And close up! Oh yeah the beach is fantastic, restrooms & showers& changing at the gift shop area, well kept, very short walk from car to beach
Sherry Simons
Clean fun family environment. The camp site is always clean and maintained and there are fun things to do on site on their calender.
Michael “Gator's View” Telgheder
The horses were a great show! Outside showers were refreshing. Paved bike paths were nice too
Sean King
Beautiful well kept National park. Wild ponies, sika deer, all kinds of birds to see. Great fishing, crabbing Boating, kayaking, kite surfing, Surfing, camping, ect...
O Duran
We had a blast! Kids enjoyed so we came back a few times with only one fee
Elika Lie
Beautiful beach & pretty clean facility. We were lucky to see some mustangs along the way.
Melissa Pello
We had a hard time finding the horses on the beach but did find them by driving around,go to the national side though
Erika M
We loved it! The bathrooms are super clean and nice with kind staff members. The wildlife are amazing.Your guaranteed to see a wild horse some time in your trip, with a very nice bike path, beach, and visitor center.
mary caufield
Loved it. Horses everywhere, beautiful ocean water. Such an awesome adventure
Cody Dietrich
absolutely beautiful beach. much better than ocean city. and you can to come close to wild horses. so awesome
Strategic Architect
The beach is beautiful and there are a large number of animals, though if you're looking for the horses you'll either be lucky or not since there's no telling where they'll appear. Of you do see the horses near the road be careful, they're prone to biting and you have park rangers on your back if you stopped on the road. Bring enough bug spray though, some trails have ticks lurking in the area.
Vaibhav Mahajan
Very pleasant beach..
5$ entry for beach at the time of writing this..
Wild horses 🐎 can be seen without paid entry.. …
Keeley Blank
This is a must see with the wild horses and the beaches just beautiful. Great fishing location with some good bait, and remember to block from wind burn.
Barry Shawkey
Nice bike trails and the beach is clean and you get to see some wildlife.
Travis Martin
Lovely beach with reasonable parking rate. Great diversity of wildlife with beautiful wild horses.
Joe Susco
Beautiful park and campground. We had a spot not far from the beach. Everything was very well kept. Showers/bathrooms were quite clean. Garbage was also stored well away. Be warned, it can get VERY windy here. Our tent almost came down a few times. Bring extra stakes!
Jitesh Batra
We come camping here every year. It’s a nice break from the constantly hubbub. The staff is exceptionally nice and treat us pretty well. Kids also have started liking it a lot and are now asking for a trailer :)
Juniper
Beautiful location, very well kept. Could easily spend all day walking or biking around to see all the wild ponies, deer, and birds.
Lorraine Swanson
We saw some horses, but we're too far away for pictures. Got their footprints in the sand, beautiful beach.
Rebecca Crapo
It's beautiful, but it was $20 per car just to drive around. We didn't see any ponies, which was our hope in coming. Worth it for the sunset!
walter cantor
I love this place nice and quiet
Nick Lyga
Clean facilities, hot showers, great place to camp. Beach was private and not busy, watrr was awesome. Horses provide a unique experience for the family, we will definately be back!
Ashley Cline
It is a awesome place to go for the wild horses big waves and for shell hunting
Angelo Arellano
Amazing, I love it. I was there for 2 nights and they were very nice. 4 stars and not 5 because there is not enough signal there and there are way to many mosquitoes. The beach is perfect and is right next to beautiful Berlin and ocean city
Don D'Souza
Its a summer vacation park. Beautiful beach at South Point, Ocean City.
Shirley Keesey

This park is just beautiful. Nice facilities and the staff is very friendly.

Beach was not crowded in October. Great time to go and enjoy the horses.
Ruth Campbell
We’ve been there in October, March and summer months. Always beautiful!
Kristol Allshouse
Beautiful horses. Didn't see many but those we saw were beautiful.

Place is great! You can drive along for miles and park on the side of the road for free. Of course, you can go to their designated parking lot for a small fee. Saw plenty of wild ponies on a chilly winter day.

Great concept..was so happy to go visit an Island to see wild horses..but as we later found out..population quite low and we only ended up seing?? 5 on entrance to park. We did go to the beach though ..busy yet lovely..lifegards constantly alert ..having to deal with emergency in short time we were there
awesome tv
The wild horses was amazing the bathhouse very clean I wish the had more power sites the beach was very private and empty I hope to come back next year
Brenna Williamson
Clean, beautiful, family friendly, and right on the beach... what could be better?? We love Assateague and visit yearly!
Matthew White (SLENDY243)
Ocean seems to be a lot calmer as well as there won't be as many people as you might find along Ocean City's Beach area. Start long enough, and you might see some of the free roaming horses near the entrance to the park!
Kimberly Soback
We just drove through the park but we did see quite a few horses nd 2 baby colts. The park rangers are a bit rude tho. The speed limit is 25mph but if u slow down to about 10mph or so to snap a few pics real quick nd one of the rangers are around....be prepared to get told to "keep it moving people, no stopping!" I wasn't stopped!! I was going like 12mph so my son could get a few pics. But I guess there are some people who would disregard the 30 or so signs everywhere saying "NO STOPPING" lol
Anyway, it is very beautiful. We were talking about maybe camping there for a few days next summer.
Robert Klein
Got to see horses stroll right through our campsite. Park is well maintained.

What a great place! Always a great experience! If you love camping and the beach, this place is for you! Beautiful, spacious beaches with wild ponies roaming. It's a very relaxed environment. Great for a photography trip or family vacation. There is no alcohol allowed in the park. Quiet time after 10 p.m. Don't leave food out or the ponies will devastate your campsite. We like to tent out and cook on an open fire but there are sites with electricity if you have an RV. I highly recommend. It fills up so book in advance. 5 stars!
Helen Nguyen
Absolutely stunning wildlife horses, camp ground and beach.
Bryan Kipke
Camping on the beach is great and to have wild horses in the campsite is totally unique.
Holly Frawley
Amazing place. I was so glad my Daughter & I got to see horses. They were even in the free area. Plus a turtle was crossing the road.
Dan Hallinan
Great, simple, inexpensive way to envoy nature, camping and the ocean

We've been camping here for years. Great beaches, bathhouses, good sized camp sites, friendly staff, and of course the wild horses.
Ioan Vlad
A good place to be outdoors. I wish there were more serviced camp sites. I will return
paul lambert

Linda Parker
Great place to camp! Had an awesome time... We'll be going back next year
Carleen Longo
One of my favorite places to visit! We were lucky enough to see part of a movie production last time we were there too!

A very nice park. If you’re staying on the National side and want a hot shower then it’s worth the $5 to come to this side to use the showers.
The trails and all of the facilities are all well maintained.
tom rapano
Great non crowded beach, and always cool to see the horses.
Maxime levesque francoeur
Great place to bring the family in camping. You can drive on the beach for 4wd vehicule.
Steph Johns
Our family tradition is to head out to Assateague any time we are in OCMD. We typically drive around (at the posted speed limit - as the horses can be wandering on the roads!) Most times we'll find the horses, but there have been times we've been there and they're all hiding somewhere. When it's warm it's nice to get out and walk around. One on the roads on the right after you enter, I think it's the second one, leads you to a place where there is a walkway built over the marshes. We love Assateague and will continue to visit every time we're near. There is an entry fee per car.
Alesha Metcalf
Awesome beautiful place!!! Loved the horses being right with you on the beach!
Grant Kitterman
An absolutely gorgeous park. We spent 3 nights in the campground. Everyone was very respectful of the park and it's natural resources. Can't wait to get back.
Lili Fuentes
Being from Florida originally, it's hard to see a beach this empty any time of year. To be fair, it wasn't that warm, but nevertheless, still a beautiful day. Unfortunately the beach was devoid of the wild horses that roam the grounds, maybe they took Good Friday off as well like we did 🤷🏽♀️. …
Nubia Sanchez
Beach was nice but didn't see much of the horses
Michael Currie
My family really loves this place. Well cared for and so much to do. Please slow down!
Vince Coppola
Breath taking views, wild horses and other wildlife! Great for a day trip or camping out!
Chris Kortina
Beautiful! Saw around 10 ponies on our drive.
Brittany Lyn
Beautiful national park! Always a perk to see the horses!!
colin patterson
Primitive camping close to the beach, $5 day use area. Plenty of surf fishermen and I've seen dolphins there countless times. The bathhouses have a few outdoor showers you could watch sunset from if you're taller than 5'4". Respect the horses and the beauty. One of the most beautiful parks you'll find.
Maura “Maurie” Fonzi
Beautiful! Sun feels so good...nice & strong still, & there is only a slight breeze, which is making some nice "roller waves" for the surfers. It was already 70° at 10:15am this morning. NICE! Dogs are allowed on the beach at this time of the Season, and everyone was picking up after their pups. 😊 …
Alicia Simon (MyWorkbasket)
Great way to spend a day! I've camped there but after too many close calls with ponies I prefer to just day trip and enjoy the beach. The day use area is great! Life guards on duty, nature presentations, great shop and restaurant. Several showers and foot wash spigots. Large bath house and plenty of bathroom stalls. If you opt to camp be sure everything is pony safe, be prepared to grab your breakfast and run from ponies, and be prepped with plenty of ways to stay cool and hydrated! It really wears you out with all the sun. Remember to buy and bring sand tent pegs.

I loved it! Yes we didn't see many horses, but we did see two! And it was mid day so they were prob under trees. But the beach was fun. I enjoyed the waves, but they were pretty high around 5PM. The veiws were great, and we even met some really nice people. I recommend for everyone, but be warned about the waves.
Lynn Haste
There were ponies in the parking lot! The beach is very nice.
Terry Goss (The Next Hundred Miles)
Fantastic park. These are no hook up sites, but they are all paved and mostly level. The bath houses are clean and nice, and there is an on-site dump station and water fill. Each loop has a path/bridge across the dunes to the beach. Note: Check in is 2pm and you cannot check in before that. You will be directed to a holding lot where you will have to wait until 2. Second, the sites nearest the dunes are all sand and seemed to be less desirable for the wild horses. We did have them walk by our site by the dunes, but mostly they hung out where there was grass. If that is important, reserve closer to the road between the loops. Store was closed when we stayed so I don't know how well that is stocked. If you need firewood, it seemed every other house along the road to the park was selling. Average price about $5. Finally note that this park is directly adjacent to a national park with similar camp sites but the state park seemed to be better facilitated and cared for.
Tracy Stodnick
Beautiful Beautiful and more beautiful. Bring your bikes if you can. Plus comfy shoes. We didn't bring the bikes. But we did have comfy shoes. Which we took off to walk on the beaches. The views are gorgeous, the birds, the horses, the ocean what a vacation stop. Loved every second of it.
Joe Gandia
It was beautiful and a wonderful place. but we didn't see any ponies. 😔 …
Rae Miranda-Laird
This place was breath-taking!!! The views and landscapes were amazing! The wild horses were an added bonus to the views. As wild as they are they sure do have alot of personality!! Stop and take it all in atleast 1 time!!!
