Reviews of Bass River State Forest
Beautiful park in the middle of nowhere. This one has a serious remote feel to it. Be aware of your surroundings. The trails are well marked but you can still get turned around.
Campground was nice and clean, relatively quite. I will say though the restrooms were pretty gnarly, so im glad we bring our own.
I enjoyed my visit to Bass River State Forest. I took my kayak out on Lake Absegami and hiked on the Orange trail. Lake Absegami was scenic and peaceful. There were a lot of water plants and turtles present. The trail was interesting, as well, with many large pines along the way.
My son and I went twice last summer. We had a blast! Staff was super friendly Lean To was clean. Can’t wait to go back.
Best place ever!!! I go here 3 times a week. Lol. But the closet is still my favorite place! I come out once in a while. Air it out.. ya know
Enjoying 3 Night's and 4 Day's on a Mini Vacation with Kit... Seeing the sight's, spending a little time at Shooter's Sporting Center and sitting in front of the Fireplace!!!
Beautiful spacious and affordable camping cabin. Directly on the lake.
Perfect place to hike in the fall and winter. Nice wide trails.
This is a great campground. Most of the sites have a secluded feeling to them, which is nice. The nature program on the weekends are wonderful, with very knowledgeable staff. The beach area is nice too.
However, if the campground showers were kept as nicely as the hiking trails this state park would get five stars. I really hope they give the shower bathrooms some attention. The handicap stall is missing tiles and the mildew is out of control. Even after the morning cleaning, there were bathroom stalls with no toilet paper.
Overall, a beautiful campground that can easily be five stars if they address the bathhouse issues.
Even though it's only a town away it feels like you're in the middle of nowhere...I've only camped here in the winter because I like the seclusion ..very clean..restrooms and showers are still open in the winter. Rules still apply year round staff is very friendly but strict. If you have the chance to take the long hike I recommend it.. the white pine Forest is amazing.
Cabin 1 (fall21)4 stars cabin 4 (spring 22) 3 stars electric needs to be repaired, bad GFI outlet in bathroom was awesome to launch kayaks right out back.
Bass river is a nice place to bring your family. That's what I did today. The beach is ideal. Their were a lot of people there but it wasn't over crowded. Lake Absegami is crystal clear. It is also shallow. The beach is well maintained and clean. The trails are also quite nice. There's a snack bar good enough for a quick bite.
Nice Campground. Lake Absegami is beautiful and will be nice when they allow swimming again. In the meantime it's a great paddle boarding and kayaking spot. The staff here is very nice and helpful. It would be good if they would get a few more of the drinking water pumps working.
Great place to camp and spend time with friends and family. Would definitely go back in the future. We absolutely had a blast.
$5 PET FEE?! $5 TRANSACTION FEE?! Cost $35 for a BASIC campsite. The bathrooms are in terrible shape, very run down. The few trails are well marked and the sites are decently spaced out. It was peaceful, but man that's steep for what the facilities are. Also, someone must have contracted rabies from a dog, because I've never seen such strict policy for dogs at a state campground.
Amazing place happy for the kids they enjoy every time we go no electricity so kids do different activities and enjoys with their friends and with us kids like to go there again and again.
Amazing trails wide and maintained , great for all ages.. most people clean up after there dogs here too. Most visiting know how special this place is and try to keep it clean. There are a few lantern flies on the yellow trail.. they move fast..hard to catch.. next time we will have a net..
Amazing sunset, beautiful scenery, and we'll maintained trails.
Great for camping or just spending the day!
Haven’t been here in years and just went recently. I had a blast. It’s perfect for family and friends, even your pets !
We stay overnight in this campground. It's a well thought out campground & we were able to pay next morning with no problems as we pulled in after the rangers left for the day. We would definitely stay here again if we were ever out this way.
Just leaving a camping trip here in the campground. Had a great time!
A very pleasant two night stay, we left the shelter in better condition then when we arrived just wish someone would take a shop vac to the inside of the shelter there were what appeared to be two
roaches, also a cup was left under the bunk, the site needed to be thoroughly raked as debris from other campers was evident also debris inside the fire ring, bathrooms were being cleaned that eve so we appreciated that, We had a beautiful view of the lake and really enjoyed our stay we took a hike on Batona trail be careful of ticks on the trails! We love Bass River State Forest when I was a kid I lived in what was then known as the KOA campground (not far from BRSF so I feel right at home in the pristine pine barrens.
It is absolutely beautiful here. The trails are awesome the state employees are very kind.
Calm and beautiful views of the lake. The place has a rental area for canoeing and kayaking which is fun for the family. Remember to bring bug spray!
Good time camping. Good prices.
Beautiful campground and quiet. Gave 3 stars as it seemed the bathrooms/showers have been cleaned this season.
Love Bass River. not just because i live here but so much to do camping in the forest at night you might even see the Jersey Devil he lives here in the woods and he is not afraid of people. also lots of places to canoe in the pine barons bring a canoe drop it in and go. also crabing us great. Lots to list but i have to leave some adventures to you. hope you have fun here.
Love Joe’s trial. Beautiful view and perfect trail for the kids and the dog. However, major major tick warning!!! We went last year around this time and my dog got a tick. It’s a forest, so no big deal, it happens. However, we went yesterday and were fully covered head to toe with clothing. I went to check my kids at shower time about 6 hours after the hike and there were literally ticks EVERYWHERE. Some attached, and some literally crawling on them. I left their jackets in the car and can’t even imagine how many ticks are all over my car. We stayed on the trial and were extra vigiliant because of last year. It is important to note that we go hiking almost every weekend and never have had an issue like this. We love this trail, but unfortunately, we won’t be returning.
Great time camping. Just wished everything was open for recreational use. Currently construction by the swimming lake.
Very clean. Safe. Family friendly. Not many hiking routes though.
Amazing place to spend with family.
Relaxing peaceful environment.
Staffs are very friendly
Really nice campgrounds and hiking trails. We had a lovely weekend, even in the rain.
The campsites and lake areas are very nice. Bathrooms are somewhat gross but not completely unusable. Major drawback is massive amount of ticks. Seemed like they were everywhere. Flicking them off all weekend. Will keep me from coming back.
Loved this area. Great hiking with kids beautiful view .
It was a great spot for camping. There is trails and a lake. Great place for spending a quiet weekend with the family.
Was a really nice camp except a storm damaged a bunch of buildings. Therefore there was no swimming at the time we we're there.
Use to come here as a kid all the time great camping spot!
If you like roughing it, this is it. Grounds are clean. Bathrooms are good enough to just use the toilet. I would not use the showers. But that's me. Too much yuck on the walls. Blech. All in all for a weekend winter escape, it was worth it.
Walked the "Joe's trail" and came upon a bench where we took this picture.
Beautiful nature, we should plant more forests, or there would be nothing to breathe.
Nice and quiet place for walking through trails around.
Great group sites and trails. Only downside is the bathrooms. I didn't mind, but everyone else was complaining.
Fun off road trails, i enjoyed it for it being my first time
This is one of my favorite camping places. The trails are all merticulously blazed and the forest here is well preserved. Bathrooms are clean, security makes their rounds and there are great spaces for swimming and picnicing.
Great place to take the family especially in the spring and summer time.
The state needs to update playgrounds and bathrooms. Campsites are clean and the Rangers are very friendly
Great, peaceful place for camping and hiking. Joe's Trail (marked JT) is by far the best trail. It has many spots to view Lake Absegami.
Nice but hated the bathroom situation at the group sites
Very nice park. Well kept and maintained. We hiked one of the trails and did not see one piece of trash! That's unheard of and nice to see. Well done park staff and /or trail crew!
Nice surprise size camping spots. Plenty of down wood to collect for fire. WalMart near by for any last minute needs.
A quiet, pretty park just around the corner. Hiking is easy and the lake is great in the summertime!
Our go-to campsite for the family! We tent-camp, and love our privacy. The lake here is clean and has lifeguards, the rangers and staff are always pleasant, and the bathrooms are clean. Best part is that only a few minutes' drive and you can find a grocery store, ice cream shop, pizza place, hiking trails, nature centers, and old Batsto village! We like things a little more primitive when camping, and this park really balances it out so we are comfortable. Bass River State Park Campground is our home away from home!
I love this place nice and clean. Great
My family has been going here once a year in a cabin since the park opened in the 1940s! We love it. Love fishing there too. It's my happy place!! Bring a kayak or a row boat explore and fish the giant lake. There is some really big pickerel in the lake. Best tent site is #33, best cabin is #3 has a very large backyard, best shelter is #1 again big backyard with good lake access
Great beach day use area. The lake is clean and clear and the beach is awesome! Great for younger kids. Most of the swimming area is shallow. On weekends there is a nature program run a few times a day for kids to learn about aquatic plants and wildlife. Lifeguards on duty do an excellent job patrolling through all angles of the swimming area. Campsites were clean, well marked and had ample space for the family. Will definitely be back for another adventure!
Pro- nice camping site, good customer service by Tony, very clean and well kept. Nice trails.
Cons- no outdoor rentals, you have to bring your own bike, canoe, etc...I know I'm in the wild I shouldn't expect showers which they provide, I just wish the shower were cleaner and better lighting for the female facilities. I wish the no swimming days were not consecutive days
One of the. Best places in nj. For. Family,s to enjoy
Lots of life good clean air insects galore most beautiful sunrise and sunset
Very peaceful sites are private well kept. Very safe the rangers drive around all night. The bathrooms at campsites are clean. The lake is beautiful. The staff is very friendly willing to help and answer any question. The only negative I think is the lake is only open from 10-6 . I understand lifeguard are tried . But why not swimming at your own risk. But should definitely camp here check it out.
Great other then not be able to make a fire in the fire pit... wind issues..and dry....
It was very clean and had a lot of camp sites. We were there to check out where we wanted to camp, and it was late June. We were only there for 2 hours and we had 6 tickets on us each. It was a shame too, because they have clean facilities, showers, fresh water everywhere, good swimming beach, and every site comes with a combo fire pit and bbq.
Camped 10/19/19. The over night low was around 35 degrees so the campground was sparsely populated. We were 1 site over from the bathroom. Didn't make sense that you have to purchase 2 nights off season. Makes no sense. Our campsite seemed to run together with the one right next to us. If the campground was full it would not have been ideal . It looks like the campsites are too densely packed. Lots of people complained about noise from Garden State Parkway. It didn't seem like a problem where we were in the campground. There was a road fairly close but really not bad in my opinion.
Amazing here very peaceful can't wait to go back when I can.
We have been going here for over 25 years. Always have a great family day. The lake and beaches are pristine. We always BBQ there. The waters are Lifeguards protected there is a playground there and canoe rentals. Great family funday. Get there early though BBQ's and Punic tables get filled up quickly
Awesome campground, great beach. Very clean, wooded. Clean bathrooms and showers. Most of the Campsites are somewhat small, would be very cozy if you try to put 2 tents and have 2 cars.
Great park... Lovely trails.. Group and single space camping and cabins..
Camped there Thursday through Sunday. Sites are way too close. All weekend we had 3 little kids behind us literally screaming for no reason day & night. The sites are so close you have no privacy. There are absolutely NO fish in the lake so don't go there for fishing. Cars drive through literally ALL day and SPEED down campground roads. Im an avid camper but will not return to this place.
The staff are kind, helpful, easily contacted and knowledgeable. They clearly love their forest, lake and it's animals and enjoy guests. We stayed in cabin 1, which is a "small" cabin compared to some of the others- but it was big! Truthfully, we could have fit 12 people in the three sets of bunk beds, a few more on air mattresses in the common space, and another bed on the screened porch! The fireplace is beautiful and works well. Just beware of ticks! They're plentiful and voracious.
This weekend was the first time that I was at Bass River State Park. It's very nice and clean. The one thing I would suggest is that if you're going to rent a lean-to get verification whether you are or are not allowed to have tents on this site as well. We had three tents on our lean-to site and we're told that we had to take them down. Thus leaving us no place to sleep and canceling our overnight plans. Other than that I thought it was really great place and we will be back.
We love camping at Bass River State Forest. Nice and quiet nice scenery great place for a long morning run.
The bathrooms are dirty. The bathrooms look like that have not been washed within a month. The showers do not work properly. The security drives down the road more than 15 miles an hour. There are not that many hiking trails for nature. The front desk lady was very nice, friendly and very helpful.
Cleanest and clearest swimming area in South Jersey. You would have to swim in a pool or at a Caribbean beach to get clearer water. Safety is definitely a priority there and can be appreciated. Plenty of public bathrooms and even a separate shower house. During their business hours they have food for sale, and almost anything you might have forgotten for your grill or festivity’s-being deep in the woods that’s a smart and convenient amenity. Love love love this place
Great place to hang! Nice lake, hiking trails! They have grills to cook on after a long day of swimming!!!nice clean beach no glass or trash around ! Great for kids ! Cabins look good, to rent
Nice park, clean with fresh water swimming. Need more capacity, too many times people are turned away because the park is full. Don't have a convenient dumpster for day trippers so the yellow garbage bags are thrown on neighboring streets and businesses.
The camping area can be noisy during the busy season and you have to be VERY careful of ticks & chiggers, the lake is great for kayaking and there is dog friendly camping and we appreciate that. The beach snack stand is a good spot in season
Loved it! shelters/cabins are far-ish from each other which gave us more privacy. I loved the idea of the cabin diary. It was awesome.
Would have given them 5 stars but I'm not a fan of their pest control. There were wasps next to the shelter and it took them a day to come deal with it and there was a mouse in the cabin when we moved in.
Solves many of my issues with the beach. It's easy to park and not a far walk. The sand is rough, but that was easily solved by keeping my shoes on all the way to the water. Plenty of lifeguards. My kids enjoyed the playground . We will go back again.
Awesome park!
One of my favorite places to go camping. Love the cabins. Family has been going there for over 20 years! Lots of memories.
It was a beautiful January day for a hike, in the low 50%, clear blue sky. We took our 3 dogs. Not many people on the trail. We hiked about 4 miles. Friendly staff at the rangers center
Was a nice clean park. Trails are clearly marked and the bathrooms are clean. Make sure to bring plenty of tick spray. They get into everything. Will go again but will be when its cooler out. Beach was nice as well
I grew up there and spent 35 years of my life there. Spacious and serene, a lot to do, but blessedly spaced out, so you need to be okay with a lot of scenic driving. Make sure you stop at the farm stands!
The area itself is nice. We are regular campers and usually go to another camp site. We decided to go last minute and decided to say in Jersey this time. We were please with the scenary at first. Not even done unloading the car, my boyfriend got a tick on him. Five seconds later I have one on my leg. This is like tick heaven. Highly recommend to not come with a pet. Our pet got bit... Let's just say the vet bill is still being paid.
BEWARE OF TICKS. ITS ALWAYS THEIR SEASON HERE APPARENTLY.
Kayaking in the lake was fun. Lake is good kids had a great time.
Some of the Campsites can be small if thinking of pitching 2 tents while some are big enough for 3 tents.
Lots of bugs and mosquitoes.. Absolutely cannot forget bug spray !!!
Around the Campsites, toilets and bathrooms are together and can sometimes get really stuffy.
Cleanliness is ok. Lots of paper on the floor and no toilet paper in one of the toilets.
Overall liked the lake/Beach area. Good for a day picnic.
My bf and I are currently camping here for our 4th time. This place has something for everyone. The south shore is great for families or groups while the north shore is more for people that want their privacy. I would recommend really looking into the site you are picking if you haven't been here before. A couple sites on the north shore (near the end of the loop near the trailer dump site) are super super tiny. We had great luck our first time and loved it so much we did some recon and made a list of the sites we preferred for our future visits.
Enjoy your trip! We always do
Bass River is a beautiful state forest. It's generally well kept and the park rangers at helpful and kind. The lake is clean and the shallow slope is great for kids. It tends to get very busy during the summer, which does make me nervous. Parents aren't always watching their kids, even the little ones without vests who obviously cannot swim. Bass River keeps several certified guards on staff and they do their jobs as best they can.
The Lake at Bass River State Forest is nice but can get very crowded at times. They have grills for public use. There are lifeguards, which is nice. The concession stand is great too. I am not giving it 5 stars for the reason that there can be some very loud, rowdy kids that parents don't watch closely. There are adults that play very loud music too. A weekday is nicer than a midweek day.
I highly recommend this place for family fun... Are whole church congregation usually goes labor day and we always have a blast. Just FYI you have to be ready to sit in line because the park is very limited. We usually get there around 7 a.m. and they're always dozens of cars waiting in line before us.
28,000 acres of state forest, trails, bath house with hot showers, and friendly park people. Handy to the Cape May Ferry (1 hour). Our 3rd or 4th time staying there.
Great park like many of NJ's state parks, but this is a very high mosquito area. Went hiking this weekend without bug spray and have over 150 bites covering my body. Didn't notice a large tick population, but you should bring plenty of bug spray and be prepared to be bit to shreds.
Park only loses 1 star because of the limited hiking. Beach is fantastic, park is clean and parking is good.
My family is camping in this park for more than 10 years and we like it! Highly recommend for all nature lovers! You can swim in the lake, go for a hike, go for a bicycle ride, or just relax outside your cabin!
Ok so I have to say I always loved this place ,went as a kid, took my kids, now husb n I take the dogs , and the last two times now have been so bad , that sadly I may not go back for long time ..
Not only did they raise the rate but the place was not monitored at night and there was several large non English speaking groups who yelled and screamed until 3:00 AM !!
Quiet hours are 10 pm to 7:30 am.
Not only were those rude people yelling screaming and partying with MUSIC blasting all night long but after not sleeping because of them ALL NIGHT but then allowed the children to start riding bikes all around with no adults around at 7:45 Am passed our campsite! Have you ever heard training wheels on gravel ???? Not a nice sound while your sleeping in bc parents ( drunk I’m aure) kept us up all night !
Couldn’t hear your own thoughts or the sounds of nature. No whipper will or tree frog sounds only loud horrible music and people yelling n hooting n hollering while your only there to hear the peacefulness of the forest !
Breaks my heart this place has gone in that direction, disgusting how people could be so rude obnoxious and break the rules ... n ruin it for people who appreciate and respect nature n the history of Bass River ...
Also a shame they got away with it , no Ranger came by at all to intervene!!
Afraid to book it again!
If your not looking to have a good night sleep n privacy then this is the place for you but if nature n quiete is a must - don’t go on the weekend in the summer !
I started going there in my teens with my parents....30 plus years ago. I love this place so many memories. We stayed every summer all summer long for many many years. The best camp ground ever! See you soon
Camped in a tent on north side, this place is huge! It was quiet, not over crowded when we went, didn't hear any dogs which is good. Sites are clean, well spaced, and large. We drove thru and picked one before we checked in. Downside is the state of the bathrooms, not very modern, and not cleaned properly every day.
The lake is beautiful for swimming, we kayaked on it and had a blast. We didn't get chance to hike but there are many trails. Would be great place for biking with the kids as the roads are paved.
Overall very clean and just a great location to camp. Also supermarket etc is just 10 min drive. Stewarts on rt9 was awesome!
Lots of open space, saw many different animals in just 2 days. Deer, frogs, rabbits, even a praying mantis. Watch out for ticks, had one land on my arm but I caught it. However the park management is restrictive with the swim area being very limited (closes early, everyone has to get out of the water every 20 mins). Overall good.
Nice camping spot, the showers are old, but they clean in the morning, just go after the morning cleaning, depending on the season bugs might invade the showers at night, plenty of space in the reserved spot, fire pit and picnic table. Beware of ticks.
One of the oldest state parks here in NJ. It is breath taking and crisp. They offer cabins, lean-tos, shelter, campsites, etc etc. All fairly priced. Many residents who live along the road to this park sell fire wood for cheap. They also have an acme less than ten minutes up the road. This is a small slice of heaven and I can't wait for my next stay.
Absolutely beautiful and well maintained. Staff is wonderful and professional. I have not stayed there but plan to soon. Cabins, lean to's have fireplaces and tent sites have ample room inside and out.
Great place to go I love taking the canoe out
Very clean and spacious worth the money and very friendly nobody telling you to stop making noise. Best camp ever
Bass River State Forest is a decent place for camping. Partially shaded campsites, restrooms & showers. It has everything you need. Beach on lake Absegami is good too. Insect repellents are a must when camping.
Beautiful place for a day of relaxing with your family and friends..
Very nice park. Beautiful lake. The staff is hit or miss some nice and helpful some should not be working there.
Have camped there and stayed in both the cabins and lean-tos. The lean-tos are fully enclosed not like a three sided Adirondack lean-to. The cabins have a main room and two sleeping rooms with bunkbeds. Lots of great trails for walking, running or biking.
Its a very nice place for your family theres lots of places you could go to, the lake goes up to about 6 feet (the limit), theres a store where they sell alot of products (dont open until about 11:30am) they sell toys, sunscreen, carbon, food, and many others. If youre visiting during the weekends make SURE that you get there early asap because youre going to have to get an in extremely long line (Very Long). And the lake were you can swim is open from 10 am to 6pm. Have a nice trip. 😀
Well maintained camp sites, quiet setting, very peaceful, beautiful lake. I was very pleased to see about 95% tents and very few RVs. Negatives: only one large dumpster for the entire camp ground, only one shower facility also, and bathrooms not well maintained - very very smelly lots of spiders.
Awesome place. Nice camp grounds. I found restroom are not clean but still I have 4 star for rest of the stuff. Also the beach lake was awesome. I had fun with my friends.
Well as you may know. I'll give 5 stars to any forest in this state or any in any state in this beautiful country, if you don't agree, LEAVE, hey just because some of our past leaders and other politicians may be sketchy, we still have some outstanding places to visit and support, I hope to see ya out there one day, enjoy it, it is so beautiful, so go soak it in and take it with you🤩☺️😙
Such a peaceful, fun, and beautiful place.
RVs can pay $20 at the office to use the dump station and refill fresh water tank.
Very clean, and well kept. We stayed in the group sites. Hiking trails are well maintained.
Anytime you can get away to go to the beach or just go to one of the great Parks like Bass River the area is great for fishing crabbing canoeing kayaking just sitting there enjoying the view sitting there having a picnic lunch with your wife your family these are the things that are important especially come summertime and the area is Scenic it's beautiful it's great
Spent Labor Day weekend at one of the Lean-tos. I did that bc i was going with my girls and was unsure of the weather conditions. I must say it was the right choice. Unfortunatly it rained most of the days. The lake was much cleaner than others we have visited. The areas also have a laundry facility a nice surprize there. The woodburning stove saved the day, i was able to cook on it. The space just fits two queen mattresses and the stove, its good for only two people with one queen size matterss. Two is giving yourself no walking space. The bathrooms not clean at all. You can tell they do not clean daily. The bathrooms by the lake were much cleaner. The one right by our Lean-to was a composting toilet lord forbid you drop something its a goner. Just a toilet seat and a hole. The ladies at the office were very nice but did not provide me with directions to our camp area, we drove around until we pulled up the map that reserve america had on the website just so i could make it back to the main office for directions. Does have local stores not too far away just in case more ice was needed. Did stop by the local Acme for better firewood for the stove and some cold medication. They do sell wood but its very bulky for the stove. Also nice surprize was not only did we get a fire pit but also a seperate grill. Saved my back cooking the first and last day. Overall good experience would return.
Bass River State Forest is an awesome place. There is a lake for swimming, it has life guards and two other sections of the lake are for fishing or to go in with a canoe. Around the same area as the lake there is a food court. Not only it's there a lake but there is campsites and cabins.
❗CAMPING PEOPLE (You'll wanna know)❗
(You have to bring your own tents and belongings for the campsites) the only thing campsites already have are the tables and the thing to burn wood in. You can buy logs or take logs out of the forest. NO cutting down a whole tree tho. Good luck on camping and be careful of the bears😊😄
The water drainage from the campsite pumps are a bit lacking. Wear a lot of bug spray if you want to not get bit. Weren't many fish in the lake when I went. Pleasant beach.
So pretty and Serene. The park is well kept and well marked trails are everywhere and easy for families. Please watch for ticks.
I have been here more times than I can remember, my wife and daughter love coming out here and relaxing all weekend long. It really is a miniature vacation at a fraction of the cost, heading back home we are all completely relaxed every single time.
As far as the previous comments regarding racist staff members, not true at all. Being Puerto Rican with a Mexican wife who speaks no English at all would make us a pretty easy target for racism. These guys are great, the place is awesome, and the experience keeps us coming back week after week, year after year.
Yes, the police patrol often, you want them around in order to prevent incidents where people may be sneaking in alcohol and causing problems for families just looking to have a good time. I would rather deal with police visits than the problems routinely associated with no police presence. Especially with young children.
I would recommend this if you are looking for a place to get away from the routine of every day life. great place to unwind and lose track of time in. I bring my tent, inflatable raft, Nikon DSLR, and leave with great pictures of an awesome time with every visit.
Fantastic clean little park that have great renting accommodations. We stayed here because it was a close and cheap location to the beach. The campground was very clean and beautiful. Will be returning for future weekend getaways
This is the second time I've stayed here definitely recommend the South Shore Campground over the North Shore Campground if you have anything bigger then 24 ft that being said the dump stations are easy in easy out as long as you are coming from the right hand lane this state park charges a $5 vehicle entry fee so if you wanted to scope it out prior to making a reservation I would recommend spending the day at Lake absegami which would more than cover the day use for this park.
The park is gorgeous. The people here are very nice and so are the police here.
I used the picnic area and was very impressed with it. It was very clean and enough room between each table to have privacy.
Bass River State Forest is a peaceful getaway in the middle of the Jersey Pine Barrens. Full of cedar creeks/rivers and beautiful trails it really is a great place to escape life for a little bit.
Stunningly beautiful park, very very busy place while the family and I where here, met some lovely people and had a brilliant time, great fishing, boating, walking trek, the staff where outstanding and polite and very helpful, extremely well maintained national park and I would very highly recommend bass River state forest to everyone to visit 5*****
Bass River State doesn't need me or anyone else to claim it's natural beauty. Bass River is one of my favorite places on Earth. I just wish whoever is in charge of maintenance would do a better job. I reserved a shelter, which is a beutiful little cabin with a woodstove and 4 bunks. The problem is it was filthy, without being swept and mopped in what seemed to be weeks. I had to spend over an hour of wiping down mattresses and platforms along with mopping the entire floor. Again, a beutiful forest, but PEOPLE come on, clean it.
I have stayed at Bass River many, many times in both the tent sites and the enclosed lean-to sites. Very spacious sites with nice level ground. The pit toilet at the lean-tos is not a wonderful experience, but there are regular toilets just a short walk away. My only other complaint is that there are no garbage cans at the concession stand by the lake swimming area. I understand the State park "pack it in, pack it out" policy, but this garbage is generated by the concession stand. Other than that. there are many bike trails to explore as well as the dam and spillway. In the heat of the summer, a walk down into the bogs and back up to the spillway is a great way to cool off if you don't want to swim. Keep in mind that this is a state campground without all of the amenities like private campgrounds have, like arcade, horse shoe pits, camp store, pool, etc...
Great trails for hiking and MTB. Bathroom in parking lot reliably open.
It’s a nice place to spend time with the family. Come relax to spend time. I could not give the five stars for the reason that you have to spend $20 to pay to enter that is ok. But you need to take your garbage with you because they don’t have no garbage can to put the garbage in.
Come by during weekends they let you boat around.....it is pretty good for bbq and picnic...they got volleyball court ...you can also play soccer but theu dont let you go down to the water .....bit you can fish if u have permission.... overall its was a great experience
The Pine Barrens is an incredible area and this state forest is great. The Batona Trail starts here, which is a wonderful trail, especially for more novice backpackers since it is flat and there is plenty of water.
Great place to enjoy a weekend gataway Camping and a grate lake to swim and enjoy with your family i been coming hear with my family for over 10 years already and love it every time i come never had a problem
Best Place so far. Nice and clean park for camping. All sites were covered with lots of trees / shades. Well maintained. Good amount of restrooms near all sites.
Great area for camping out year round they have mini guys for the winter months and U can use tents when it's warmer..
Nice lake on the property for swimming..
Went camping there for the first time. Staff was very friendly and help full and accommodating. The park itself was clean the beach area as well. We had a good time and loved it .
Empty early fall weekend. Nice sites. Place as mostly empty. Staff was very helpful.
Playground was just ok and trails are just ok. Bathrooms functional but the whole park needs some tlc.
Love the Bass River State Forest. I have gone hiking with the dogs, swimming with the kids and just enjoyed the beautiful nature!
Friendly and courteous staff, park security is present, bathrooms with showers, great for a couple , family, or just a few friends getting together. They offer everything from tent sites, lean to, or cabin's.
Bass River is a very clean park with a pleasant staff and clearly marked hiking trails.
Fishing , camping, hiking trails.. August is bad time for ticks.. Camping & picking up Fresh friut from the market is nice. Basto village & Galloway twp nice shopping too. Also Nice areas for Pictures too.
My go to camping spot in south NJ. Sites are roomy. Bathrooms and showers are free but could use some upgrading. Swimming and fishing available at the lake with concessions on certain days.
Lovely visitor center. Hiked the Batona trail, well kept and clean. Would absolutely return and come for camping next time.
So easy to get to right off GS Parkway and you step back in time to Pine Barrens n Baymens history. Lake is shallow but warm, lots of swimmers n picnickers on "beach". Our Leanto was more of s cabin w door n Franklin stove.
Love the serenity, the peacefulness.
Beautiful, untouched real nature. Find your self out here.
just a wonderful little place to go for a stroll in the afternoon or bike ride or if you like to jog. Maybe have a romantic little picnic somewhere just a nice place to get away from the hustle and bustle
The staff is very accommodating and friendly. The facilities and cleaned daily. I love the shelter rentals! Perfect for a quiet camping weekend
Beautiful camping experience, my 14 year old grandson's first camping and he loved it.
I love it there, much like High Point State Park without Mountains! Clean and quiet! Almost a 5 star campground! Cabins need to be cleaner and updated!
The Oswego river is quite beautiful to kayak from Harrisville pond upstream. It is very scenic and there are places along the way where you can get out and walk on the sand bars and on the sand bluffs.
Nice place to go for a outdoor walk, and have a picnic. Learn some about the history of our past. Hint: find the Nature Center to see the hummingbirds.
Nice place for camping . There are limited covered shelters available for night camping. You don't need tents. Restroom are neat and clean.
Great place to camp or you can rent a cabin or hut. beautiful and very quiet in the off season. Very crowded on holiday summer weekends.
Thank you for allowing ORV patrons of the 2 wheeled kind. It is much appreciated!

Beautiful walking trails. Campground is quite nice, the leantoos are very reasonable and no need to bring a tent.
Have a generous amount of lifeguards on duty at all times. My 18 month old loves the calm lake and playing in the sand.
Great views. Hiked around Purple and Yellow trail and had a great time. Would recommend to anyone who loves nature.
Sites are clean and well maintained. Spacing was far apart and even over labor day with perfect weather, it didn't feel crowded in spite of every site being taken.
Great park with great amenities. Beware: large tick and mosquito population.. lots of bug spray recommended
Not crowded, i didnt like the facs that police and rangers patroled every five minute. Limited privacy, everything is see through. 25$ tent site.
Attended a Memorial Service for 4 Eagleswood firemen that were killed in a Forest Fire in 1977 ..in Bass River Forest..🐻😟 …
I just love to get away from the city and relax every now and then.
I go toResorts to do a little gambling as welling do not usually win but I usually have an enjoyable time.
Very disappointed the beach is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. Also not happy the admission fee is doubled on weekends for NJ residents.

Great hiking, playground, and beach area. Camping is fun, and it is always clean.
Great place to take the family
Bass River State Forest is located in marvelous mysterious New Jersey Pinelands. I actually spend over half of my spare time there
They need an attitude adjustment at reservation desk. They should allow people to volunteer and cleanup the overgrown brush in campstites
Oh.. beauty!! A well maintained state park with courteous and friendly staffs.
Nice place for family and cooking outdoor. There are grills everywhere with tables and bench included.
The campsite was peaceful and it was wooded and pretty and it was almost like having the campgrounds to ourselves.
I love this place, every year I go, I give 3 star because the bathrooms need to be remodel.
State police have nothing better to do on a hot day a give seat belt tickets out.
Watch out for rattlesnakes.
If you walk to the lake at night, you can hear a 360 degree choral rendition of nature.
I come here every summer with my family, and it's always a great time!
