Reviews of Washington Square Park
I've always loved this park and on my recent visit, I was reminded of why. It's really a park of the people for the people. You see so much diversity here. Young and old were enjoying the day. There was some good music as well. Loved seeing the people with their doggies. The park was clean and so were the bathrooms.
Very chill space with so much going on - definitely good place for people watching. Many restaurants around to be able to grab something tasty and enjoy here at the park. Very diverse group of folks - art displays, dog walking, skateboarding, guitar playing, weed smoking/selling, vendors selling personal art and crafts. Sunsets are cool to enjoy - the golden hour for a good photo shoot is a plus.
Next to Central Park, this is my next favorite park in NYC. This park may be substantially smaller, however the diversity and things to do are just as plentiful.
This park has excellent music playing throughout the park from local bands, an incredible arch to take photos near, excellent street food (looking at you Dosa Man!) as well as an intense chess scene with a bunch of outdoor boards embedded in tables!
How can anyone not love this iconic park? There are plenty of benches to sit and people watch or listen to a musician. Oh, and smoke. It's not my thing, but be advised.
The water fountain is a major attraction and the best spot to cool off. The arch is where everyone wants to grab a photo.
If there was a downside, I'd say all the college kids begging for your time. The park is surrounded by NYU, so I get it.
It's so beautiful no matter what time of day you visit. There was a musician with a piano playing for people at the park. It's a hot spot for dates, hangout, tourism, to eat some take out, small vendors, and young adults skateboarding around. There's a fountain in the middle which people like to relax at as well. The arch is also such an iconic photo spot. love this park.
The place in Greenwich Village, it's a amazing Park with a fouuntain in the Middleton, the mythic Washington Arch and it's an historical and multicultural point when you can enjoy a great time. Great place to relaxing and take a break . There's chess tables. There's also a separate area for dogs. You'll always find music players, food, and others selling their merchandise especially during the weekend. Today was Jazz and many things more . ..
Great outdoor space during the sun shine! Love the vibes, the big space and street performers too. There were not too many though.
Not sure whether there’s a toilet in this park.
Washington Square Park is a staple for NYU students. Not only is it a beautiful green space in the heart of the city, but it also serves as a hub of activity for the university community. From events and performances to simply lounging on the grass and studying, the park is always bustling with students taking advantage of its prime location. It's a great place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of city life and enjoy the fresh air.
This is my local park, so I go there often. I have a great view of the Washington Square Arch and the ENTIRE park, It’s beautiful. I would recommend this park for NYC Tourists, as well as NYU students, especially ones who live in the Weinstein Hall Dorm. Overall, this Park is perfect for relaxing, taking Pictures, or just for taking a walk.
To quote Jess Mariano, "it's cooler", and he was right! Although, it was -12 degrees and I couldn't sit down on the benches for long or my body would have froze tbh. Love the buildings/architecture. I will have to go back when it's not so cold so I can sit down and take everything in way more! Bill Murray was also there singing the week after I left, so obviously I have to go back and wait for him to turn up again!!!
Great park that can get very crowded so try going during the week. Plenty of space to move about and find a bench to sit on. Famous arch is there to look at. Take the family and a lunch and enjoy.
Such a fun place to be on a sunny day. There is lots going on: food, music, dog walking, playing, dancing and chilling. I love their new bee homes they have built to encourage local bees to lay eggs! There are 5 of them. If you can find them!
A serene park, tall trees and beautiful concrete arch at the Washington Square.... This Park is about ten acre in area. Located at the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Lower Manhattan. We liked this Park next to Central Park due to its being an icon and lively atmosphere surrounding this place.....
Love the small dog run here so much! It's perfect. The best way to start the day. A great size, small to medium-sized dogs running around, people wearing masks (except for the occasional coffee drinker), and water bowls and poo bags.
It's a beautiful park in the Greenwich village area. There are many people sitting and spending their time there peacefully with their friends and families. It's just beside New York university and you can see many young students.
This is a nice square size park in the center of beautiful Greenwich Village. It's famous for the NYC Triumphal Arch and a nice fountain in the middle.
Park is always full of people so it's a nice place to people watch - street performers, chess players,... Mostly there's younger generation, as all around are NYU student blocks.
However, at night it becomes little bit sketchy so do take extra care - heavy weed smell and suspicious people despite heavy police presence.
Plenty of very good and cheap eateries around in the side streets.
Super cool oasis in the heart of the hot city. There is some welcome shade that the chess masters take advantage of. The spray from the fountain is welcome.
Lots of street vendors around for drinks and food.
Great pavement art too
It is a place full of cool people during the day, there are merchants, students celebrating their diplomas, singers, musicians, etc.
It's also a film location of the movie "I am a legend".
I like to walk around at night to get into the mood of the film and pass by the house of the character played by Will Smith, just a few steps from the park 👌🏼
Got there midday and the weather was muggy. Lots of people everywhere old and young! Folks sitting on the benched or laid out a blanket on the grass in the shade. I went there for the mini Arc de Triumph. Nice fountains.
Very nice park. Great views of the city and historical buildings. Chess area. Big fount and arch to take beautiful pictures. There is a lot of banchs, so everybody can come here and enjoy a relax time.
This Park Is Such A Cool Place To Hang Out With Friends. This Is NYC so it is also important to be aware of your surroundings.
Street Corner Resources Come out to pass on resources and to keep a peaceful presence so when you see the guys with the SPF logo on their coats or jackets please do say hello.
One of the coolest places in NYC to see creatives and artists expressing theme selves. Music, art, any form of creative expression in done here and some of the tangible things are for sale. You will do some cool stuff here when you go.
I love all the small businesses that are in this area. Places like this are treasures. All the artists connect with the people around them as well as provide entertainment. I think my favorite part about this park is because of its Bohemian surroundings.
This park is relatively small compared to the others from New-York. It is a vibrant and lively place where people are coming to make sport, chatting or simply relax. If you are lucky you can ear nice music... then grab a meal and enjoy the moment!
Visited in May 2022 at night when NYU was having a celebration. Really nice place with a nice atmosphere. There were people playing board games. And people selling stuff. Didn't see anything illegal.
What an amazing place to just sit around people watch and drink some coffee. There was so many people just out enjoying the day, it’s a beautiful park and a wonderful place to get away from the city.
I've live in NY for almost 34 years and it's the 1st time I go there we enjoyed it.. and had a great view of the moon too
Great place to visit if you have the time on your visit to NYC, places is filled with locals, college students and dogs enjoying the outside. You may see some recreational marijuana users but it became legal in NY so if smoke from it or the sight of it bothers you then don’t come, but you will be missing a great spot in NYC.
A nice place to sit and look at the buildings! It's also a famous film site where the filmed scenes from "Harry Met Sally" and other movies.
Even tho there is a lot of homeless people, the park is safe. Lot of artists, the view is amazing, good food trucks. Such a unique place
Placed in Greenwich Village, it's a amazing Park with a fouuntain in the Middleton, the mythic Washington Arch and NYU side by side, it's an historical and multicultural point when you can enjoy a great time. If you can, don't doubt about going there!
Washington Square Park is a 9.75-acre (39,500 m2) public park in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Lower Manhattan, New York City. One of the best known of New York City's public parks, it is an icon as well as a meeting place and center for cultural activity.[1] It is operated by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation (NYC Parks).
The park is an open space, dominated by the Washington Square Arch at the northern gateway to the park, with a tradition of celebrating nonconformity. The park's fountain area has long been one of the city's popular spots, and many of the local buildings have at one time served as homes and studios for artists. Many buildings have been built by New York University, while others have been converted from their former uses into academic and residential buildings.
ocated at the foot of Fifth Avenue, the park is bordered by Washington Square North (known as Waverly Place east and west of the park), Washington Square East (known as University Place north of the park), Washington Square South (known as West 4th Street east and west of the park), and Washington Square West (known as MacDougal Street north and south of the park).
While the park contains many flower beds and trees, little of the park is used for plantings due to the paving. The two prominent features are the Washington Square Arch and a large fountain. It includes children's play areas, trees and gardens, paths to stroll on, a chess and scrabble playing area, park benches, picnic tables, commemorative statuary and two dog runs.
Statue of Giuseppe Garibaldi
Those commemorated by statues and monuments include George Washington; Italian patriot and soldier Giuseppe Garibaldi, commander of the insurrectionist forces in Italy's struggle for unification; and Alexander Lyman Holley, a talented engineer who helped start the American steel industry after the invention of the Bessemer process for mass-producing steel
The New York City Police Department operates security cameras in the park.,[2] and NYC Parks has security officer. The area has a low crime rate in the "safest big city in the United States."
The land was once divided by a narrow marshy valley through which Minetta Creek (or Brook) ran.[4] In the early 17th century, a Native American village known as Sapokanican[5] or "Tobacco Field" was nearby. By the mid-17th century, the land on each side of the Minetta was used as farm land by the Dutch. The Dutch gave the land, then outside the city limits (Wall Street) to Angolan residents of the colony, intending for their plots and settlement to serve as a buffer zone to Native Americans outside the settlement. In 1643, a group of "half-freed" slaves and elders such as Domingo Anthony, Manuel Trumpeter and Catalina Anthony, received land grants to build and maintain farms in the areas containing and surrounding Washington Square Park.[6] The families who received the land were no longer slaves, but had to give a portion of the profits they received from the land to the Dutch West India Company and pay annual land fees. Their children would be born as slaves, rather than free. The area became the core of an early African American community in New York, then called the Land of the Blacks and later "Little Africa".[7] Among those who owned parcels in what is now Washington Square Park was Paulo D'Angola.[8]
It remained farmland until April 1797, when the Common Council of New York purchased the fields to the east of the Minetta (which were not yet within city limits) for a new potter's field, or public burial ground. It was used mainly for burying unknown or indigent people when they died.[4] But when New York (which did not include this area yet) went through yellow fever epidemics in the early 19th century, most of those who died from yellow fever were also buried here, safely away from town, as a hygienic measure.
Great place to hang out and take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. There's chess tables for you to try your skills at chess with other people. There's also a separate area for dogs. You'll always find music players, food, and others selling their merchandise especially during the weekend.
Nice cultural magnet in Greenwich Village, complete with buskers, protesters and artisans. Good symmetry of the arch with the fountain (initially they were unaligned, but the Parks Department years ago improved that feng shui). There is a statue which amazingly has not yet been Ant1fa’d.
Probably my favourite park in the city (except for Central Park but you get what I mean)
It's just the perfect place to come in the afternoon to sit on the grass and read a book, but also at night to eat your takeout next to the fountain!
Really cute area across from NYU. It was a Sunday and they had a small market going on with food vendors and local artisans works.
Located by NYU and is packed with students and locals alike. Very nice spot to just sit and chill and enjoy the nyc vibes, only downside is the smoke coming from some people walking by.
We love coming when we visit New York. Was busy today with people and skateboarders. I don’t mind the activity. It is sad to see the graffiti.
Small and pretty park with a bubbling and lively atmosphere. Good for a stroll or seating in sun or shade with your loved ones. Also you can play a game of chess with the chess hustlers. One of the best parks i have been to.
It's a park full of characters and nice energy especially if you go after 10.30 a.m.So nice just to sit, watch, drink coffee or have a chat to someone who's a regular! Quite a few people asking for help, anything you have or can spare, people playing instruments, tourists, sporty people.Go and enjoy this lovely place 💚 …
I’ve always loved this park, defiantly visit if your travelling or have never been!
Overrated. Pretty much NYU students’ quad. You can see some interesting people here and you can take some good photos thats about it. Other than that probably the worst park you will ever goto.
This was my first time in New York City.!! It was AMAZING what a cool spot to hangout.!! Was kinda hoping to see the guys from Impractical Jokers.!!! 🤩😁😉😂😂😂 But we didn't that's cool still an AWESOME 😎👍 place.!!! …
Lovely iconic Park, lots of funky activities going onA great lunch setting
This a very active park with lots of people watching fun. Be sure to wear your sunscreen.
Quite crowded park but the arch and fountain are absolutely beautiful. There were lots of people ceiling marchandise.
One of the greatest experience I ever had. Great music and even better atmospher 🗽🌉🌃 …
Very nice park which can be very busy on a sunny day. There's a lot going on and there are little stalls around where you can buy handmade stuff, clothes, accessories etc.
Good open space, lots of seating and ppl chilling. Too many smokers around though, making it unbearable
This park is beautiful and full of culture and good vibes. At night this place is lit with all different types of people enjoying space together. People sell their art and belongings and vibe, play music, relax, dance, smoke, drink... whatever it is you do you can be free to be yourself here.
It's crowded but an amazing park to hit up. I doubt you will find any other park like it in the US of A!!
I've had so many good memories at this park from when I attended NYU. There is so much history behind Washington Square, did you know the park used to be a mass graveyard?
The design of the arch is just breathtaking.
Loved this park and the energy around. You will see anyone and everyone around here. Right next to NYU campus.
Lovely park in the heart of Manhattan. People can spend some good time here at foc
Washington Square Park is a lovely urban park located in the heart of Manhattan. The park is well-maintained and features spacious lawns, mature trees, and beautiful monuments. The central fountain is a popular gathering spot for locals and visitors alike. Additionally, there are numerous benches and seating areas available for those looking to relax and take in the atmosphere. The park also hosts a variety of events, including concerts, festivals, and street performers, adding to the lively atmosphere. Overall, Washington Square Park is a must-visit destination for anyone in the area, offering a peaceful escape from the bustling city while still being conveniently located.
A very nice park. It was very busy when I went. There are plenty of places to sit and enjoy the park. You can also relax on the grass and enjoy the sun. The fountain in the middle is nice and can be refreshing getting a wet down from it when the wind is going in the right direction. The arch is very well done and is a lot bigger than I thought.
A lot has changed in NYC over the years, but Washington Square is still old school New York. A place to hang out and see some of the quirky and crazy characters of the city.
Just super nice place take brake listen live music, people watching, performance artist. Glad see majestic trees.
Very nice park & elegance for take photos early morning. Good angle if you know about your skill. We love to come back soon.
Washington Square Park is one of the most iconic public spaces in New York City. With its grand arch and central fountain, it serves as a gathering place for locals and tourists alike. The park is well-maintained and provides plenty of green space for picnicking, sunbathing, and relaxation.
I love visiting Washington Square Park to people watch and take in the diverse crowds. From street performers to NYU students, there's always something interesting happening here. The park also offers several benches, making it the perfect place to sit and enjoy the surroundings.
The surrounding neighborhood is also worth exploring, with plenty of great cafes and shops to check out. I highly recommend visiting Washington Square Park to anyone visiting New York City. It truly is a must-see destination!
Lovely park next to NYU with Chess Boards, a nice fountain, and artists performing.
In January, there was a bit of cold weather and people were singing, families having a picnic, boys playing around with skateboards there was music because someone was playing guitar. It was good.
Very nice place. Even in winter it was alive and attractive.
People were really enjoying. Music 🎶 was playing by different people and it was enjoyable. …
Beautifully maintained park with lots of history. I particularly enjoy walking around the park in the morning. I always stop to check out the dog park, love the water bowl fountains for the pups! Tons of shade, plenty of places to sit and relax.
Gorgeous park despite being a little bit tourist-y. Offers the typical New York City classics such as food carts and street performances.
great place to catchup, there are benches to sit, there is this big fountain you can take some pictures and also a lot of teenager's to find there. NYU is right next to the park also there are food carts around. the park is pretty cool. good place to hangout, there are weekend late night parties going on there are a lot of people do skate boarding there.
Iconic park in NYC, while I was only there for a short time it's one that I long to spend more time in than just eating lunch. It seemed to have a decent playground which had some children enjoying it. I definitely enjoyed walking around it and wish I had known about the restrooms in the park as I left to go find one.
Something for everyone. Bands, views and of course, people watching. Do not miss this place.
Better visit in the mornings.... crowd gets here so fast by evening
Cute park to people-watch. A mix of college students and tourists but generally it’s a much younger crowd, at least at night.
I have a personal family connection with this place that makes it very special to me, but I think anyone who doesn't hate parks would enjoy the... what is it... calm but bustling atmosphere, the clever use of space and architectural features, not to mention the proximity to so many excellent bars and restaurants.
Iconic spot, perfect for a little group hang, people watching, listening to musicians playing in the park.
Washington Square Park is a vibrant spot to visit on weekends. The arch is one of the city's recognisable landmarks. The park is characterised by people socialising and dancing, displaying art and musicians exhibiting their talent.
Small area but good one to spent some time with coffee.
Lovely pedestrian walkways with a small dog park. Unfortunately, the public toilets had plenty of homeless people inside who were all too eager to grope you if you were at a urinal. Stay safe, kids!
Love this park. Many history surround this park. Thousand of people are buried here…NYU university nearby…
its a nice big park with the occasional market and/or booth selling all kinds of things. it has a chess area and space for a picnic.
Very nice views at sunset. Lively park with lots of people in the evening
One of the most interesting places, where you can find people from all walks of life coming together for a bit of fun, art, chill, and hangout.
Nice square, great views through the arch of the Empire State Building.
A few rats knocking around at night!
So many creative people around, live music and heaven among crazy traffic
People smoke inside park , everywhere And smell of it could be not comfortable for anyone
This park is right beside NYU. There is a public restroom available there, which is super convenient and tourist-friendly.
Very lively park with a diverse crowd. Many students hang out here and there are some nice bars around. There is almost always some live show going on.
A great place to take a break and maybe look at some local vendors that set up here during the week. A spot with a lot of tourists, but I guess that's most of New York. The fountain is nice to sit near during the hot summer and there are sometimes performers at the arch.
My son took me here at night & it was amazing. We sat at the fountain, listened to music, & watched all the other tourist that flood this park! A beautiful & well enjoyed park, for sure!
Got here at night, 12/31 11:00pm, here is crazy
But still beautiful.
My favorite park in NYC. Some locals, many tourists, and typical New York craziness at its best. Really good people watching. And the NYU students always bring a fashion forward and too-cool-for-school vibe. There are panhandlers…it’s New York! And street artists selling their wares. Lots on informational booths and gatherings. Did I mention…It’s New York! Why it’s denizens love it. ✌🏽💗🙏🏽
So much happens here! Was extremely crowded on a summer Saturday evening but the energy was 💯. Dancing, art displays, solo entertainment acts, the historic arch! Or if you need a relaxing spot, lots of shady green areas for a picnic. So wonderful …
a nice and beautiful park something more quiet and calm in the center of the city
Beautiful park, perfect spot to chill and enjoy the weather.
Enjoy the evening.
Tuesday is Salsa Dancing night 💃 …
It's Washington Square Park... what more can anyone say. If you know, you know... and if you don't, you should go find out. Always lively and full of culture. Get lost in all the energy and find your fave crowd, you're sure to not be disappointed... as for the bathrooms... its a public park with massive foot traffic.
I used to love this place but the heavy pot smoke and loud music have taken the joy out of it. However, the landscaping is beautiful and it is a joy to sit there and watch people walk by if you don't mind the smoke and the noise.
no matter daytime or night time visit, it's really beautiful
Second time visit here during the autumn, there is fountain in the park, so many ppl are reading books and having a picnic with friends.
Great pace, nice to sit down with a slice or two of Joe’s pizza & observe New York.
Stand up and Speak up! Well known in the village for the gathering place for all...you can always count on interesting sites in this park
Beautiful late afternoon, lots of activity and people. Very community feeling, with NYU wrapped all around. Good place just to be outside.
Awesome park! I went in the winter and it was still bustling with plenty of people to watch. The lawns were closed but there was still ample seating in and around the fountain. The arch is awesome and is truly a sight to behold! I will be returning for sure.
It was bigger than I expected. My only complain is the bathroom was locked before their closing time
Absolutely love coming here, just reading, watching people, having conversations with friends and having a cup of coffee. This park is by far the most busy rain or shine and there’s always something fun happening, people dancing, singing, musicians playing and creating.
This park can definitely be a little sketchy but there’s always so many interesting people and things going on. It’s a great park to just chill at or people watch.
Awesome place to hang around. Great Environment. People around you dance, juggle, play, draw etc. which makes the surrounding more lively. This is the center of the creative area in town where everyone goes to listen to music and play chess and just hang out and enjoy the vibes. There was fountain area filled with water but recently they have removed which I don't know why. Now people use that area for play, different routines etc. Do go before typical fall starts otherwise you gonna miss the green beauty. It's clean, safe, and there seems to be a lot going on even well into the night. It's definitely worth a stop if you're roaming around Greenwich Village.
Energy is insane. Loved it. Washrooms are always lacking anywhere in or around NYC. Very smelly, canabis. Asked by many for money.
Its iconic due to movies having a setting there.
Nice place to relax between touristing
The biggest park but not the best. Arch is a definite visit. Fountain wasn't working and one side of the park and a lot of homeless destitute populations selling weed.
This can be an all day thing. The park is very big with a ton of stuff to do. A lot of sites from movies, remote control sailboats, scooters, and more. We went during March which was a perfect time. It wasn’t to hot or cold and everything was greening up. They have a lot of little food places and sport parks for activities. You can hike up some large hills and see some good history. Have a great day outside and forget that you are in such a large city.
W e are so lucky to live nearby
A ll year long this park never fails
S ure, it could be dirty at times
H onestly I don't mind; it's NYC!
I ts dog park has different sections for small ones
N ight or not people are here enjoying themselves
G oodness performances here and there
T here are even street vendors!
O rdinariness doesn't exist in this park
N icer if people clean after themselves
S ound everywhere, be prepared
Q uestionable characters? Sometimes
U sually hang out one side of the park
A lluring greens and flowers
R omantic vibes
E verywhere you look,
P eople are happy
A fter all, this is magical Manhattan
R emember, be nice and
K ind to each other
Seems like a nice park, but be careful and if you're alone, don't hang out there after the dark, you may be approached by shady people.
I really enjoy this park. It’s big enough for some good people watching without being overly packed and even when it is pretty loaded there are usually a bunch of mini events in the park that help break up the anguish of dealing with crowded areas. It’s usually really clean and you can sit inside the pond and catch some of the fountain mist if it’s windy which is perfect for hot summer days. Lots of photo opportunities and a nice location for engagement pictures or portraits just make sure you’re early enough to beat the crowd if you want them to have nice distraction free backgrounds. A few good carts and bathrooms next to the dog park are here as well. If you get hungry you’re about two blocks from a bunch of places to eat on Macdougal street.
This is one of my favorite parks in NYC. It's more a square rather than a park tho, but the life & things are always going there! You'll always find all sorts of art performances, events & a huge crowd on a nice days
Great cultural meeting point of all ages during the day. At night it takes on a different feel and the lights hit the arxh in different ways.
A very nice place to relax. A wide open space that's good to come to during the summer or warmer times. Usually a lot of events happen here. Very family friendly as well as for the students residing in the area. Very scenic as well for photographs with the arc.
Serendipity brought me to this place. Happy i came. many skateboarders and vendors and buskers. overall a great experience.
There was, what I can only describe as a “dog meet-up” when we went. It was a great mix of different events that Saturday afternoon.
All in all, there’s loads of space to do your own thing. It’s pretty well-maintained and clean. There are loos for public use, it was a clean as a public toilet can be.
There are plenty of places to eat at nearby
It's a big park in the middle of West Village. This space It's great to chill with your friends, by your own or with your dog.
There's always a lot of people around and lately, it's been one the spots were protesters meet before marching towards the city.
Depends on the day, there are a fair amount of homeless people hanging around. But great place to relax and read a book, plenty of benches and quite areas. Love to see musicians jamming out and about.
Really great spot for pictures and relaxation. Many restaurants nearby. Little Italy and littke China are close by and worth it to combine and see all with a nice lunch or dinner
This is an excellent public space. It's part of the fabric of Greenwich Village, and of NYU. You can usually find students here, along with neighborhood residents. In the afternoons and evenings, especially during the summer, you can find all kinds of musicians and groups meeting. There are also, of course, homeless people and late at night, drug transactions. In general, though, it's a peaceful park with a great vibe.
Good atmosphere and views. Bathrooms disgustingly awful but other than that. A nice spot. We were visiting from Fla.
This is one of the most central spot to start diving in the city.
Walking south you can visit SOHO, CHINATOWN and FINANCIAL DISTRICT .
Walking west you're 5 min in the Historical WEST VILLAGE and waterfront parks . then NORTH you are one step from all the clothing Stores in 5AVE and the elegant FLATIRON DISTRICT , MADISON SQ and the eclectic CHELSEA . Finally to the East you are in the NOHO and EAST VILLAGE !!
It's a BEAUTIFUL day for a stroll in the park today. It's 88°F and sunny but not humid at all. Sat on a park bench bench and ate some lunch. Great day!
Very fun little park. Perfect for summer. Iconic fountain. You can enjoy getting drenched or walking through the sprinkling fountain. Many local performers. Fun events on weekends. Great for people watching. Many snack centers and restaurants nearby. Happy happening place. Very entertaining for your dogs and kids specially!
Lovely visit on a cloudy but wonderful fall afternoon. Thriving park loaded with places to sit and people watch. Clean, full of people enjoying themselves and the outdoors. Felt safe. Great neighborhood. Classic NYC park experience. Recommended!
Always a pleasure. Plenty of places to eat nearby but it's also a great spot to sit and people watch.
One of the best places in NYC to experience NYC. People in their environment. Loved it, my friend and I sat there for 2 hours just people watching and talking.
Lovely park, full of life and laughter. There are so many things happening in that space, tap dancing, skate boarding, musicians, poetry, baby groups, doggie groups, people groups...so many things to see and hear. The summers in this park are filled with fun and enjoyment!
Magical place, excellent to spend a great afternoon.
Nice little park to break up the city hussle and bustle. The marble arch is awesome, constructed in 1892, very neat to see. Dedicated to George Washington. Free parking around the square after 6 on weeknights is a nice bonus too. Beautiful fountain in the middle of the square had children and adults alike splashing around on a very hot summer day. Fun little pit stop.
Great historical place for sightseeing and also for passing some relax time. Lots of people roaming aroud the park with nice vibes and smile. Have a visit. You'll definitely appreciate it later.
When I visited this park several time was because this park had the block history many many years ago. Google it you'll find out actually behind the daylight scene, here is the most popular haunted place in New York City.
Read the history, you'll find out New York City not only have hot spot to go, still have more to explore.
This park is right next to NYU and is so full of life and activity. There’s a good amount of homeless but they are friendly and harmless during the day. Lots of live music and college students just relaxing and enjoying the trees. This park is not kid-friendly and is pretty dirty, but great for a mid-afternoon walkabout.
It's good Place to hang out with friends or alone. Sometimes you can unexpectedly see a band playing music and even get free items offered by the charity.
A good place to chill with friends, preferably in the summer time. The best thing living in new york city is that you will see any kind of people everywhere. I love staying in this park just watching street musicians singing, bridge dancing, playing an instrument.
Lots of room to walk and relax. Clean and moniterd rest rooms. Dog friendly nice play area
Beautiful park that you should visit. It is one of the attractions in New York. The atmosphere is so relaxing and away from the crowd of New York. Kids will enjoy it very much. You could take a very good shots their especially next to the arch. Those who like chess can play as well. I like it alot.
Great people watching. Just sit on a bench and watch the pulse of Manhattan. This park has some beautiful trees and flowers. There are plenty of benches to sit and absorb. The fountain serves as the center for the park.
Great park for Juggling, skating or seeing live performance and music. The heart of Westby lodge and anger you all the trains are nearby, there are a bunch of places to grab food, drinks or coffee late at night
The piano player is unbelievable, we listened to him for an hour. He let's different people lay under the piano and experience the music from underneath. There are the usual street show, which are fun... but my kids had the best time jumping into the water fountain, and could be there for hours.
Saturday afternoon is great, it attracts a wide variety of people. Really good vibes just to sit in the sun, relax and listen to some live jazz. 🎶 …
This has been in my list for a while. I made an early morning trip from midtown down... it was very nice. It was raining for the whole place was deserted except for the dog park. The dogs were having a ball... literally. It was very nice.
This is the best place in New York to people watch. The living heartbeat of Greenwich Village, you'll see just about everything in this piece of land in the middle of the city. Park amenities were updated, dog parks were in full use. The squirrels-very friendly! A must visit in NYC
Awesome atmosphere, alot going on in one place and I'm making this my lunch break *to go and relax* ♥️💯 …
Lovely park. There was live jazz in two different areas. A playground. Good vibes
One of my favorite parks in NYC. You always see something different like dogs dressed up as hotdogs, or lobsters, or school busses, or bees. Or live performers, or vendors, or protesters. This park is iconic!
Crazy place where everything & anything is possible.
Changes a lot from time to time depending on the crazy people taking over but it’s always interesting to visit.
Mostly I miss the old crazy as opposed as the crazy in turn but oh well… such is the life we live in
Very cool park. A lot of space and places to sit down and relax. Less crowded than Central Park. Would definitely be coming back here to relax.
On my first day in NY, I visited the most iconic parks of NY. This park was not big though. Had a seperate section for pets where only those were allowed who had pets. Rest, there was not alot of greenery but I guess it was designed like this.
The iconic gate of this park is a great piece of architecture. Alot of professional photographers were taking photos of it. As usual, the NY places are not compete without popup music performers. Some musicians were playing and entertaining the audience.
I love the overall vibe of this place. A great place to sit and relax :)
Nice Park in-between NYU but I will warn not to visit after 11pm we had alot of people approach us selling you know what and if it's not your scene they make take advantage of the situation.
From the day I moved to New York half a life ago, Washington Square Park has been the start of many a wonderful day. From sitting and people watching to reading a book to starting a haunted walking tour, I have so many memories that began, ended, or are entirely of this park.
Great park for all ages. Good stop and sit to have lunch or a snack on a beautiful sunny day. This park has lots of tourists from all walks of life, every where in the world. Great park for photos and videos. Overall awesome park for everyone.
Its a park with a fountain in the middle. Lots of seating and shaded area. There’s people performing for money. Near subway station and path station.
Oh my god this place is so beautiful! You have to visit if you are near of union square or Greenwich village
Washington Square Park is a beautiful park that's full of life. From skateboarders to artists to musicians, something is always going on at this park. My cousin lives a block away and I would come here to relax after each day of exploring the city.
Loved the atmosphere, a lot of artistic people around, everything just vibrates with good vibes!
It's kept relatively clean and secure by maintenance staff and police. When the weather is nice, it can be extremely crowded. Students and tourists jammed everywhere. But usually it's calmer in the winter. Great opportunities for photos under the arch. There's usually a movie filming or an art exhibition here.
Washington square Park is a little park in the heart of the NYU area. Lots to see especially on sundays, beware Sundays are crowded here in the park! There are people laying on the grass, there's families, there's the great street performers who always put on a great show! There's also the bubble man whose bubbles make for great subjects on your picture! Please try to tip the bubble man I see them and they work really really hard! It's looks fun to make bubbles but in reality it's not! There's also a dog park in the Washington Square Park and there's always so many dogs! I guarantee they will make your day! The arc is also more magnificent that I ever imagined. I didn't think it would be that big! Also there is really great food one block away from. This park it more quiet that Central Park and it's more likely! I can't wait to be back! Go here sure Christmas time to get some amazing pictures! Sometimes becareful because there are some people that are yo to no good,.
There’s always something going on, all kind of people, music, people hanging out on the grass, a great place to enjoy an afternoon.
I love this place. Gives me a real my city vibe. You can see the melting pot here but still relaxing.
Love love love this park. There's not a ton of actual park, but there are a bunch of benches and a bunch of things going on -- you can take a seat and enjoy the live music coming from all corners of the park, walk over to the westmost corner to watch or play some chess, or hang out with the venues and artists and skateboarders by the fountain and gate. The people watching is also fantastic, you can really get a full slice of New York life in an afternoon.
This park is always fun. Always something going on. Very iconic photo spot.
It's not that big of a park, more like a square I would say. It looks much better in summer but overall it has this nice arch that looks good in pics. It's lit up in the evening and is also a good attraction for the fans of "Friends" 😀 …
One of the most social and fun public spaces in Manhattan. Always something going on here. Must visit for any tourist.
Great place to sit and relax. The fountain is very nice, and the children's swings and other playgrounds are nice. The arc is a must see. On a nice day you can enjoy sitting on the lawn.
Very amazing park to immerse yourself in the human experience. Go there open minded, give yourself an hour and just go with the flow. Always something fun to see, someone fun to chat with or something to do. It’s NYC at its best!
A cute park with a gorgeous fountain. There is a dog park as well with its own fountain which is nice to sit and watch the puppies play.
Washington Square Park is a legendary park in the heart of Greenwich Village. It is a historic and iconic site. In the evening there might be street musicians. There is also skateboarders there and chess players might challenge people to play with them. This is also the home of the Washington monument at the main entrance. Many good restaurants in the vicinity.
Washington square will always be interesting. It's kind of like a box of chocolates like Forrest Gump says you never know what you're going to get. We saw the fountain in action, the great Arch, a lot of art happening live, but then there were the panhandlers. The city is a very expensive place to live but Washington square is also a very public place so like I said you never know what you're going to get.
I'm always happy to be there. There´s a lot to see here: chess players, musicians, weird people, artists and drug addicts. But also good for just relaxing.
This park used to be really active during 2020-2021 but now it’s dead, cops everywhere, BS curfews. The state it’s in is quite sad because it used to be really lit. This park was quite famous in NYC for being active but now it’s dry. Usually see misleading TikTok’s taking place here 🤣 …
It's a nice park. Always people walking around but mostly students from NYU. There is a dark side to the park though. It's a corner near the chessboard tables where there are homeless people who some appear to be drugged out of their minds.
Other than that, the park turns into a different park after 5 pm. There is music, food, art and other cool stuff.
The plaza is beautiful and the monument was amazing, but the weed stands that took over the park are really annoying with their music and pot smell all over.
Open area, great for family weekend picnic, or just a simple date to walk around this neighborhood
Amazing park and vide. The fountain in the center is a Zen resting point. The archway is iconic. The park is always vibrant and I love to spend lots of afternoons there. Being close to SoHo and NYU it is a real fun place. Going anytime of the day is fun as there is always something going on. Parades, music, dance, performances, acts. One can see the spirit of New York in one place. Tourists should make it a point to spend some time here. I simply love the park and everything about it.
There's an air about this Park that is timeless and quite romantic during all seasons. One aspect of this Park that I greatly enjoy and appreciate are the musicians, dancers and artists that frequent it. The one that in my opinion truly adds tremendous value, maybe even in an incalculable manner, is the Pianist Collin. Since 2005, he has been pushing his Grand piano to the park alone and has performed to the delight of children and adults. His interpretations of classical piano pieces have moved people to laughter and tears and has made more than a few evenings at Washington Square Park romantic for people on a date. My travels have kept me away from NYC so this evening, I was fortunate enough to be in the area searching for nice bone broth soup to warm up with when I saw his piano from outside of the park and that drew me into WSP. Walking under the majestic white arch, I entered the park gazing slowly around in a filmic way. Couples walking about, parents with kids playing, skaters working on their tricks, the homeless holding space, the squirrels running about as the pink sunset warmed the chilly evening sky. I approached Collin and said hello. He recognized me and greeted me warmly as he does with everyone. It feels like home seeing Collin in the park. With an innocence of a child, he invited me to lay under his piano to experience the music from a different perspective while he plays. He played a few notes to make sure I was ok with the sound, which I was, and he began to play. In my periphery I could see the arch and people gathering around the piano. Then he began to play and all I could hear was the beautiful and rich music he was playing. As I listened, I read the many words of gratitude written underneath his piano! I closed my eyes and just let the music wash over me. It's a most vulnerable and sensual experience that feels wrong in a way. In NYC, the city that is always buzzing and moving, here I am laying under a piano indulging in beautiful music. How can I be so lucky to enjoy this gift? And a gift it was to experience this wonderful music played by this kind soul, Pianist Collin. A selfless gift offered to me in this lovely park designed and created by souls who saw through time and space the need to have beautiful parks in Manhattan and created this lovely park. If you ever decide to visit this park either as a local or a visitor, please do yourself a favor and visit it! Bring a snack and some tea, and find Collin. His music will lead you to him. May you enjoy the performance and the park as much as I did.
Quiet and calm place
A famous place depicted in so many movies (i.e. When Harry met Sally), this is actually a youth-favourite spot. There are hundreds of students, performers, street traders, stuntmen and other interesting individuals scattered around this square. Sit down, take a break on one of the many benches and observe the talent around you, while enjoying good music and food.
Very lively, lots of people doing different things from art to music and other performances. Lots of benches to sit and observe people.
Great place!
Things happening everywhere, especially on a sunny friday.
Washington square park is a great place to visit. It's alway busy, there are always events and performances going on, there are always eccentrics hanging out... A great place to go people watching. I wonder how many people actually know that this used to be a cemetery and that there are still thousands of bodies underneath the park... Another creepy fun fact is that you can still visit the hanging tree in the Northwest corner of the park. And while were sharing fun facts: Will Smiths house from the movie 'I am legend' is also located at the border of the park.
Lovely to see it so lively and safe. Performers and artists and lots of people selling weed! Out in the open! Legally! Pretty great we aren't sending people to prison for that anymore in NY!
Very lively and well structured Park to hang out and do some people watching. We had luck and there was a guy playing on a piano at one of the entrances. That was really cool and you could notice that so many other peoples just joined and listened. If you need a break from chaotic Manhattan, take it here.
Really cool park, beautiful, peaceful, cool fountains and artwork. Washington square park is iconic but also often flies under the radar in the concrete Jungle of NYC. If you are in the village, check it out for sure.
Wonderful place to sit and relax. If you have a pet, bring it here to walk it. The view is awesome as well, on one side you can see the empire state and one world on the other side. You can find roadside parking just next to the park so if you are driving no issues for parking. Also if you walk upto west 4th street from the park you have access to tons of restaurants and bar with the perfect Manhattan atmosphere.
We recently passed through Washington Square Park after an early dinner at nearby Minetta Tavern. This is a nearly 10 acre public space, teeming with activity and leisure-seekers in the Greenwich Village.
This is a place to see young, energetic and sometimes eccentric types engaging in an array of activity including musical and other performances, dancing, liberal speech making, drawing upon the concrete grounds with chalk, having a bite to eat or just hanging out. Its a bit of a hip place to see and perhaps be seen for those who visit and frequent the park.
There are a handful of nice monuments to view at Washington Square Park including the large Arch structure at the NE end of the park, the centre fountain, Alexander Lyman Holley bust and Giuseppe Garibaldi statue.
Washington Square Park is a place we have found to have more character than other NYC public parks in Manhattan. It is an interesting place to pass by and spend a bit of time during visits to the city.
This park is vibrant and full of entertainment! Definitely a must when you're near the village - give yourself plenty of time to take in all the performers or to just sprawl and read for awhile :)
Very easy to get to with some great views :)
Everyone does know this place was tha main location in movie named AUGUST RUSH.
In late night, some people still stay there and square lights shiny.
Look so beautiful.
A place with peace. If you are searching a place where you wanna relax or enjoy your weekends try this place once I think most of you will definitely like it but if you know park which is more peacefull and enjoyable recommend me also
Beautiful park. My son loved playing chess against one of the players there. Extremely friendly guy!
Hh
It is one of the symbolic monuments of this splendid city. It is truly full of charm, of history ... It is truly wonderful. I invite all lovers of this splendid city of ours to visit it. I am sure that even if you have already visited it, returning you will be amazed, open-mouthed. Both by visiting the roof, with the terraces from which you can admire both a splendid view of the city, but also to admire the statues. The interior of the church is indescribable. Unique really beautiful and evocative. It is one of the most beautiful monuments ever seen so far!
During the day it is truly spectacular but also in the evening!
All very clean and beautiful.
In Milan there are subways and tram lines very close to the Duomo and it is very convenient and very cheap, for those who do not have a car or a taxi.
Highly recommended!
The cathedral is always beautiful. Its beauty is truly magnificent.
We bought tickets for the terraces with access from the stairs. Although in July it is very hot, it can be done. There aren't many steps, but it's worth it when you get to the top.
The view over Milan is magnificent.
The park is located in the heart of NYU's "campus." Naturally students use it a lot to study or socialize. Events are constantly going on in the park. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because one time while I was eating my lunch at the park, under a tree and in the shade, I felt something drop on my shirt--twice. It was poop from a bird. That was the last time I sat under a tree in the park.
Hare krishna, Hare Krishna, krishna krishna, hare hare.....Hare rama, hare rama, Rama rama, Hare hare. Im literally singing this in my head as i met someone who explained the afterlife situation of reincarnation i already thought of outside of meeting him today. We agreed on somethings and disagreed on one point. I walked away and laughed out loud at my comment related to the point we disagreed on with my friend. He gave me a cookie and a flyer of sanskrit words i though was too complicated to pronounced at first ( Hare krishna, Hare Krishna, krishna krishna, hare hare.....Hare rama, hare rama, Rama rama, Hare hare).
I eat the cookie and put the flyer away 😄. As i approach a large group singing i hear the soft sound on and on and on and the light balb turned on my head. Aaaaahhhh they are saying the words on the pamplet i wasjust given to. In this instance i was Anta the explorer lmao. I pull back the flyer and read it again. Someone had a mic and everyone singing balancing their bodies. It was like huuummming and singing. I though of karaoke and said i can do this!
You get the mike and sing the song (with the words on the pamplet) fed to you hahaha. I start singing like i did this for hundred years that way. Dang it was fun!
Then as i walked away i realized everyone had a different beat and version to the sanskrit words. Different beats, different forms of presentation but the same pamplet content :). Yes this is even more fun! Yaaasss i m officially an anthropologist on washington square.
Fun summer day. Somehow magical with the bubbles, kids chasing bumbles, street food fair, education about an indian culture i just learned so much about and that reminded me a lot about our wolof tribe ritual and ways. Only in NYC.
Beautiful park, buzzing with activity. Wonderful especially on a summer night and very spacious.
4 stars not 5 because of the portapotties- there was an event and there were probably the worst toilets I’ve ever seen in my life there. Cleanliness of park is questionable sometimes but overall a great experience.
One of the craziest places in nyc where you get to see people doing whatever they want without a care, really hectic and crazy!
Come early in the morning just before sunrise. Magnificent!
Great spot for dates/ chilling by yourself or with friends/family. Nice local spot. Great every time of the year. Don’t go to the parks after dark, rats.
Worth a visit esp during the holidays
One of my favorite parks in the city ! 😍 Washington square park is a great place to hangout and chill ! I love the different activities that goes around here , dancing , chess game among people, magic tricks , and love when I see kids playing in the fountain during summer! This place is always soo lively and looks beautiful with all the pretty trees. The Arch is a nice structure right infront of the Park. If you ever go to this park, you'll surely love it cz it has a great vibe! I've been there many times and I always enjoy . Also plus points, so many restaurants near the park and the subway is near too ! Going there again for the summer sure to just chill ! 👌🏼

One of my favorite place in Manhattan: full of life and activities but quiet and peaceful. A great place to meet new people. And the neighborhood is exceptional.
great park! love to read or study here.
Very nice safe park full of energy, culture, families and animals.
I love this place. I've met some amazing awkward ppl here. Haha this park is a melting pot of so many different type of ppl. I love it here.
A nice park in the heart of the city. Nothing much to do here, expect may homage to the Garibaldi’s statue.
Sit back and relax. Take a breath of fresh air before heading to 5th Ave, or any other destination.
Musicians, homeless, benches, entertainment… good for a nap or picnic on the grass.
A nice park with lots of events and great ambiance.
Fun to go to for a stroll. Live music in different sections of the park, which is great. You can also dip your feet...or whole body in the fountain on a hot sunny day.
Beautiful park during the day. However it is a bit sketchy at night
Lots of seating is available in the park
Next to the university so not a place to be at night time
Lots of areas to sit, some decent grassy areas, and probably the easiest place to find a weed dealer; the air is thick with the smell of it.
Water fountain available, but no public bathrooms.
I love Washington Square Park, but the reason I only gave 4 stars is because it’s been changing now there’s almost only weed sellers…I miss when it was filled with cool homemade clothes and jewelry booths. I still love it though.
Used to be a a fun place to hang as a youngin but now it's just tik Tok central and posers
Great place to hang out. The nightlife is amazing and this is the place to be during the summer. Surrounded by some of the best restaurants and in the center of the NYU campus there is not much that wont find you entertained. Artists frequently visit this location and there is also a section for your dogs and kids.
This iconic park is almost always filed with vibrant people. It's a great place to go for a stroll and enjoy the fountain in the summer. In the winter time the fountain does not operate however people are always going inside where the fountain would be to take photos or just sit and relax. There's always something to see here and has great views
Great park in lower Manhattan, dominated by the Washington Square Arch. Fenomenal place to sit down and observe people passing by. You can play chest with locals and it has been the set for many many movies. It's the start of the Fifth Avenue and many of the sourrunding buildings belong to the University of New York. Toilet facilities available.
It’s a beautiful place right in the middle of the city
U ll get more young crowd here.. because NYU is very near to it..as NYU has no campus the students use this park to sit, chill.. u ll get some of them studying around.. in summer s the scenes are different.. people all around taking sun bath.. it look similar to some beach side ... U get people playing guitars, 🎸 keyboards, people practicing their stunts.. u ll get some people singing.. very live atmosphere.. there is a giant gate named Washington square arch below which no NYU student passes as they have myth that if they crossed the gate they ll never be graduate 🤣.. just a street behind there is New York University buildings.. don't forget to take a glance.. where every parent wanted to see his or her child in.. around there u ll get many restaurants in a line.. which offered many good food and drinks.. 😊
A classic NY gem. Somehow I forgot how wonderful this small park is. Great group of souls gathering and enjoying a summer evening together, the improv jazz band playing only added to the vibe.
Fun place to hang out. Lots going on, stalls etc. Was beautiful warm sunny day when we visited so sat around the lovely fountain.
Beautiful park with an iconic water fountain. Lots of space to chill from the city and relax. There are plenty of attractions happening every not and then so make sure to check online what's the plan for when you are thinking about visiting.
A nice place to hang out with friends. There are always lots of people out there walking, sitting, enjoying live music from different musicians. The park is very well maintained. It also offers many playgrounds. There is also a beautiful fountain in the park.
This is an amazing park right on the heart of Manhattan with lots of benches for you to seat and simply enjoy a beautiful sunny day and watch lots of people either walking, taking pictures or feeding the squirrels.
You will see from time to time street artists playing music, most of the crowd that visits this park is relatively young since there is a Campus nearby.
A good idea would be to bring a sandwich and a good drink and just enjoy them while you experience what happens here since you never know what to expect.

Great place to people watch, plus I think there are kids playing with bubbles every single day. The arch is also a magnificent piece of architecture.
Washington Square is a lovely park, there is always something interesting going in here.
Located right next to NYU there are a lot of students and locals just relaxing and reading, eating, sun baking or even playing chess. Probably on of my favorite locations in the city. A must visit for anyone visiting NYC
A small but famous park in the Soho area. Many people have picnic and enjoy a peaceful afternoon here. There are usually artists performing in the park. There are also some good food choices around. Not a must visit but feel free to drop by if you are around.
I was skydiving in NYC then i something wnt wrong i did not know where i was going but i landed on this cool place called Washington Square Park i did not know where i was at first then i saw a sign and i was amazed how beautiful this park was. I would recommend this park to anyone
Best people watching and always something going on. Great musicians, day and night. Nice dog run too.
Beautiful as always, with classic architecture from the surrounding NYU campus. The arch is my favorite part of the park.
Nice place. There is a dog park and a play ground for little kids plenty of park benches. The bathrooms are so so and the people playing chess want you to pay to play.
A very beautiful and large park with a ton of restaurants and cafes in the neighborhood.
Definitely the coolest park in NYC. Visiting? Jump off the goofy food tour or whatever Village tour and hang here. Music popping up all the time - jazz ensembles, guitarists, eclectics, horn players, you name it. Clever, creative kid areas, dog area, artists working on pavement and otherwise. Grab take-out from McDougal St or one of the other streets and chill here for an hr or so. Sit by the fountain and imagine a young homeless Bob Dylan sitting there playing for tips (which he did). You'll see more Village and more fun than any other way.
Beautiful and relaxing park in the middle of Greenwich Village. Probably the most famous sight at this park is the arch at the northern edge of the park. Otherwise, there is a small dog park to the southern edge and a big water fountain that is quite popular during the hot summer months. Most of the locals just sit around the fountain and relax with some good old people watching. The park is quite popular throughout the entire year as it is a large green space in the middle of many high-rise apartments/condos. It's a nice oasis from the rest of the bustling city around it.
The best time to go is on a sunny weekend day. Go early and bring a little picnic blanket, you can people watch all day!
Great location, if you don't know this park by name you will certainly know the fountain, I recognised it as soon as I saw it, really pleasant and open, green space
The noticeable subway station name after this park (W 4th Street - Washington Square) the fountain located in middle of park is nice for a visit. The thing is there is a lot visiters on weekday especially in afternoon which is recommended.
This park is amazing, it’s near where NYU is too. I absolutely loved this park because there’s always people performing music and comedy shows.
What a blast part beautiful park part frat party, within half an hour there was a noisy beer chugging group, a protest against eating meat, a hot dog parade and acrobatics in the fountain. The high energy of NYU students contrasts with the serenity the parks surroundings I just wish we had more time to see what would happen next.
Lots fun.you see all kinds of cultures mingling together.street vendors with crazy art.buy weed!! Right on the park legally
Small place yet lot many fun actives available for kids. And more importantly we can watch the cute Rick and Doris puppets live
It is relaxing and pleasant even in the winter. We encountered the wonderful piano performance and this adorable little fan. She refused to go even her dad told her. She was enjoying the performance with us. Such a heart warming experience:)
Big park. Lots of tourists and locals. Watch as people play live music, performances or street vendors. Take a photo sit on a bench or grass and relax.
Fun place to chill and people watch. If you're looking for some extra history walk over to the Brown building and see the where the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory used to be, and read up.
Used to LOVE these park, now its occupied by pot sellers and users. Please do something about it so I could fix my rating
Could spend a whole afternoon here listening to live music and watching random shows while sipping an ice coffee. The people watching spot.
New York City! The best park in the five boroughs. Besides NYPD telling you to lower your music, great park to hangout at!
Nice little park with the famous arch you must have seen in the Friends TV series. It's in Greenwich and has some really good food places around it. Close to NYU so many students visit and are roaming around.
Clean, neat park. My team at LEAD Security Group Inc. provided security for all 3 of the 2019 laughter in the park events hosted by NY laughs
A busy park with plenty of stone and wood benches to sit on. There is a wonderful playground for children to venture into. Additionally, there was a pianist playing on the Sunday afternoon that we were there. There are also local artists that put their work out for purchase. While this area is a landmark for tourists to see, it was clear that a huge population of people there were locals sitting in the park on a gorgeous afternoon.
Great place to chill and relax, drink and have fun, there so many amazing people
Awesome park with a lot of music & people enjoying the sun 😎 …
Great park to have a beer and people watch. One of my favorite places to chill when visiting NYC.
New York has great parks this is one if them. Good resting spot after all the walking. Street entertainment great place for people watching.
Great vibe during spring and summer , do not recommend dirige grandes winter.
Such a stunningly beautiful area with amazing energy and spots for calm reflection. Every time I visit New York, Washington Square Park is on my list of places to see, photograph, and write stories and poems! Grab a coffee and sit here for hours just enjoying life, and you won't be disappointed!
It's a great historic landmark all in all. Sometimes it can be a bit messy nowadays: strange people wandering around, marijuana smell all the time, I've seen a fight once. But it can be fun also: street musicians and performers, nice greenery around, simply a nice place for a quick meeting on a lunch break in summer
Quirky and always with something entertaining, with NYU students and local people together and as with any NYC park it's useful to be always aware of one's surroundings
The other New York park that everyone knows, even if they don't know the name. An essential visit in NY. Nice and quiet in the morning but best visited on summer evenings and weekends when the place is heaving.
Such a historical park to visit- as it has been the site of so many movies, TV shows and photos through the years. There is no better people watching anywhere. The last time we were there way the day after Roe v Wade was overturned, the day before the NYC pride parade and the week of 4th of July- it was the people watching Trifecta!
Nice park to walk through, and the arch was cool to see. You can see the Empire State Building through the arch, which was neat. Walked through here on our way to the river, and it was a cool photo opportunity.
We love Washington Square Park. We stumbled upon a doggie costume parade and some delicious Gyros(Street food in NYC is delicious by the way). Somehow we felt like we fit right in to this scenario. It felt very welcoming... Also we got Free Hugs.
“Great monument in the city of monuments”
I know this is not that popular but believe me if this monument wud have been in some diff city, it wud be as famous as Arc de Triomphe
Beautifully architecture. You can see empire state right thru this. Park is spacious enough to spend the whole day with friends and family.
I have captured some really good photographs with it.
Food stalls r there.
there's always crazy stuff going on here like clothing selling, art selling, etc. the last time i went there was a random jazz concert happening for free. great place if you want to kill time.
Lovely spot to stop and have a drink, eat, chat, and enjoy the day. Lots of street performers and people enjoying their day.
I didn't catch the man at the front desk's name, but he seemed to have unending patience and kindness in handling a tricky request for me. Awesome spot!
Beautiful, shady, breezy spot to enjoy a sunny afternoon. Tasty crepe cart. Great for watching the dogs play and run in their own little fenced park.
Lovely place
Live and attractive
Iconic park did not disappoint. Beautiful day. Beautiful city. I’ll have to come back some time for the piano performances.
A great place for meeting up with friends and checking out street performers...The view of the George Washington Arch really is breathtaking, you can’t leave NYC without taking a few photos.
Park was very charming and the arch was amazing. They were lit during the night time and that made it even more spectacular.
My favorite park in the world! Nothing like Washington Square Park! Music people and life! What else are you going to ask for!
A lot of tourists, musicians and street artists. On a sunny weekend, it was a wonderful place to enjoy all the activities. Love it and highly recommended.
Such a cool, young vibe in this park. Very crowded but that’s expected
This place is always going to be a romantic spot between the water fountain and the plaza the park surrounding it and of course a huge arche and all the beautiful and wonderful people.
Always such a lively park! Something for everyone. Huge fountains. Great park for kids! Bubbles, artwork, music, hotdogs, balloon animals, jungle gyms. Awesome!
Office workers enjoy their lunch here, and it is an open space for street performers to show off their talents. Look out for the arch and the fountain. It’s particularly worth reading about Washington Square’s place in history and literature before you go.
Experience art, music, nature, childhood, adulthood ...in short life at this park.
Amalgam of energy, youth and creativity
We wanted to visit the iconic Washington Square Park during our New York trip. It happened to be raining whenever we arrived, but it was still worth the travel to get there. The park was clean and accommodating. Lots of benches to sit on and a lovely fountain. The pinnacle of the park is, of course, the arch. We stood under it to take refugee from the rain during our visit. Such a lovely park!
Lively ambience all the time. Crowded on weekends. Near to NYU so you can expect log of students in the area
It is a great park for kids as well as for adults. Today it was sunny and there were musicians there playing. Very crowded. Lots of people hanging out on grass as well. Couple great parks. Kids enjoyed the climbing park a lot. There is also a fountain which is really nice.
Great place to relax in a bustling city. A few vendors selling food and ‘screaming spots’ drawn by who I presume are University students.
What New Yorker doesn't like a nice park? Especially one as notorious and happening as WSP. There's a little of everything there and when I say everything I do mean it. It's a Hubble for famous and aspiring artists and a great place to cool off and make new friends in its illustrious fountain on those hot muggy city nights.
Worth checking out....lots to "unpack" - great people watching!
Iconic place in NY, there’s always something happening here! Explore the area and ended up between NYU campus
I think this is a great park square, and it's totally transformed over the years between my visits. As well as being a haven from the hustle and bustle of the big city and the encompassing buzz of the multi-site NYU campus, you'll often catch a fascinating art installation, or perhaps unique street artist performances. Whilst not necessarily a "go-to" destination if you're on a visit, it will always be a pleasure to stumble across.
Amazing place to walk around and spend some time. It has an area for dogs and the Washington arch is nice to take some pictures. Loved it.
A place to enjoy with friends and see the sunset 🌇 …
It's a beautiful place with lots of places to sit. You have around little parks and a super market. In the summer you can sit by the fountain and you can hold you feet in the water. After Thanksgiving you can see a lovely Christmas tree.
Lovely park. Live music and entertainment. Dosa cart is in park , other small carts are also there. So many good restaurants are nearby.
Wonderful weather, and a variety of musicians. Upscale people, young NYU students, educated parents, and just nice people in general. Free and clear pockets to feel like a part of it all, or all alone in your thoughts. It's up to you.
The romantic in me had to go here on my recent trip to New York City. Henry James was calling to me! Simply a golden oasis in Manhattan. The city of my dreams. Found this flame of autumn in this delightful garden enclave.
If you know, you know, this is not a place for everyone but it's a place one must visit if you are passing by ny
Place is beautiful😍, they had nice alive music today. Lots of people walking around. A lot going on!! Very nice spot for pictures …
The open ganja market selection is better than I've ever seen.
They say it's for people watching ..thing is , the people may just be watching you .
Love the vibe at this park. Always something interesting going on. So many great restaurants within walking distance.
It is a nice park, no doubt about this ... The issue is that there are a lot of sketchy individuals, it gets too crowded and I've seen rats before. On a different note the squirrels and pigeons are very friendly :-)
So many teens and weed but still interesting to visit
Iconic Greenwich village site. Great dog park. Free music. Often grand piano music too
Can be considered the best best park in the city if you like energy and entertainment surrounding you at all times.
This was the first 70 degree day in the city so it was packed, but we were still able to find a spot in the grass at a decent distance from other people.
WSP features a lively atmosphere with drum circles, painters, skateboarders, bikers (particularly on one wheel), and much more. Great energy here. If you want a calmer atmosphere, hit you Central Park.
Amazing and vibrant atmosphere. Really close to some of the best restaurants in Greenwich Village and iconic midtown landmarks. Honestly the best chess scene in the city.
When it’s nice outside, Washington Square Park is the place to go. Live music, green grass, beautiful flowers (especially during spring time). Currently the magnolia trees are blooming. I took these photos and videos on April 10, 2019. You can also find a live video on my Facebook page 🔥 mickmicknyc …
Visited this at night so not much to see except the Washington Arch lit up. There are seats where you can sit & play chess on the tables inlaid with chess boards (do they bring their chess pieces with them?) There is also a dog park here. Skateboarders love the central area to practice their skills! Be aware that drug-dealers can frequent the Park, day or night!
Fun park with lots of music and vendors. There is a beautiful tree walkway, fountain, chessboard tables and the Arch.
Lots of weed vendors but also several food vendors.
It’s worth walking through.
Lovely place to visit, skateboarding and crazy trump badge sellers :) lots of seats and not far from little Italy
My favorite park in the city! Best place to people watch. Washington Square Park is a People's Park where art and music is shared. It seems like a festival every day. It's got playgrounds, fountains, bathrooms, dog parks, and more. Bring a blanket and enjoy the spectacular vibes of the city
Love to go back to this place again and again! One must try to make the most of the activities going on in the park while enjoying their peace-time. Must not miss the view of the fountain!
It’s a place of historic importance, it’s mysterious about with its secrets and currently it’s just a cool gem as a public space for a break, tourism and hanging out. “It’s A Great place for fall colors as well.
The Washington Park is small, beautiful, very cultural and in the heart of Greenwich village. The proximity to NYU main campus makes it a student social ground but also a great many talented singers or musicians perform there for anyone who enjoys a listen. It's many trees and beautiful fountain offer a perfect shelter on a hot day.
It is one of the landmarks to see in New York. The square is nice at hosts an arc. I knew this square because here were played the last scenes of the movie "I am legend" with Will Smith. In the movie, thr main character lived in one of the houses that surround the square. Precisely at the number 11.
Music, people, and trees. Great park. At night avoid the west side, but def check out the fountain in the middle on summer nights--not to be missed!
Fun, lively neighborhood park. Relax, listen to the various musicians, read, sunbathe.. it's a true park!
Very nice and clean park. Although we did see a rat run across the sidewalk when we first walked into the park in the middle of the day😕 …
When u meet an adorable duck & her owner 😻
Jazz playing also, always lots happening n #washingtonsqpark ✌🏾💖 …
The most lively park in the world with the most diverse gathering of artists, street entertainers, or just people doing whatever they want to express themselves. Great for people watching, catching live amateur music performances, getting involved in the festivities, or just soaking in some sun on the lawn. It's always a party at Washington Square Park!
Very popular, nice place
A great Park for watching some very talented performers. There are all kinds of people about and it's a great place to kick back. There is a great ghost tour that sets off from here. Well worth the money. There are some lovely eating places dotted around the park so it's easy to pick something up and take it into the park to enjoy.
Went with mom.. It was nice.. But there were this kids.. Rallying and one fainted lol but the ambulance was there.. 😱 thats why hydrate 😁.. Oh therss always this ice cream truck nearby.. Forgot the name odlf the guy.. Gave us an extra free scoop 😊☺ …
Once the sun shine in this place, the vibes of music will follow... If you looking for a relaxing and sunny place in lower Manhattan that's the place you can chill ... Plenty of chairs diversity of faces, pets, voices and tourists.
It’s a nice place to chill. The place smells is saturated with the smell of weed though and some parts feel shady.
Beautifull park with an amazing history behind it. There's always something going on.
It is said that, "First impressions make all the difference in the world." Getting to experience Washington Square Park on our way to NYU certainly left an impression -- Winter had not yet begun.
Much improved since when I lived here in the late 70's. Now there is a public restroom and a dog park!
Always something to see!
Visited on Christmas Eve for some community caroling. Great Christmas spirit and the organisers where so kind to lend out song books to sing along. It was just fantastic tone part of an amazing evening to celebrate Christmas.
This park is very popular for social gatherings and it is populated by nyu students. The architecture itself is not impressive but it’s well maintained.
You won't regret visiting Washington square Park right in the middle of Greenwich village. This is the center of the creative area in town where everyone goes to listen to music and play chess and just hang out and enjoy the vibes. If you like to smoke there's plenty of weed available.
Great little bit of greenery in amongst the amazing shops and houses of "The Village". Try playing chess against the sharks, you may have to be a grandmaster to succeed.
Awesome place for photos, reading, or just people watching. I always seem to run into tourist, people from other countries with interesting stories and backgrounds.
Beautiful place with college environment. Just sit and enjoy intelectual talks, coffee, street music and fast food.
WSP is arguably the most quintessential "New York" spot in New York. It's something you can only feel. This place contains all the elements of a decorated experience that can't help but leaving you feel more inspired and artistic. From the eccentric characters to the lively children innocently splashing in the fountain, the park's people are what make it a remarkable experience; you feel like you are on a safely guided, sober acid trip. Seriously...some of the most interesting people on the planet have been in and written about this park.
If you love to read and write in parks while taking breaks (pomodoro method anyone?), then look no further. The scene will change every 5 minutes, but every refresh rate will definitely contain something noteworthy and capable of inducing philosophical thoughts.
I've been going there since 2007 when I lived in the NYU dorms. After being there this June of 2022, I was spellbound by the ambiance all over again. I will never spend a day in NY that doesn't include a walk through this very special space.
Beautiful park in any weather but yesterday it was spectacular. Go see it. Music, activities and the splendid Arch.
Wow this park has cleaned up nice. The fountain was on. The bathroom was open. The kids were playing. 5 stars all the way.
Saw the band Matter of Minutes an up and coming indie band they have an amazing flare. They're young and exciting write their own music and are really hitting the scene . They're actually on Instagram. Cool place to come and see new acts for free in the open air. Hope to see big things happen for this band they drew a huge crowd.
This used to be my absolute favorite place to unwind, and sip on a quad latte; now it is full of sketchy characters, and that says a lot considering the entire city is an “etch a sketch” 😉 …
Some chill areas to play spike all or set down for a picnic; an interesting mix between NYU students, tourists, and locals.
Oh what a glorious place in delightful Greenwich Village. Street players, fountains ornamental gardens and a magnificent triumphal arch. I loved the vendors selling anti Trump badges
Great park, there are always events going on.
Honestly don't know why this place is such a big deal. Bigger and better parks galore elsewhere in the city if you are wanting rest and reprieve. Location is great, so maybe that's the bait? If your into people watching, this is definitely the place, as you will get all sorts of interesting and unique people who aren't afraid to be their wildest selves.
There are many reasons why this park comes up again and again across the generations, and part of it is a collaboration of ideas and an open forum to discuss those ideas with people who hold ideas counter to your own. Chess and poetry gather at this place. NYU feeds the energy, and all these conversations end up in performances in one way or another in the comedy and music of the Village, which helps shape the perspective of the performers for the masses. It’s a forum, which has always been a rare thing.
Goods - The arch is worth seeing and it has nice seating so that you can relax or take a break from your travel. You have a lot of people around and also the famed chess hustlers if you need to sharpen your board skills. You should also try the famed dosa but keep in mind it is not always open...we did not get the chance to eat it but it has awesome reviews online.
Bad - Do NOT use the ladies washroom unless you HAVE to. There were guys holed up in one of the toilets and they were constantly going and coming out of it. There were a lot of ladies who just came out and the one's who went in said that the guys were just laughing inside...not sure what they were up to. In case you are thinking as a rest stop I would suggest to think otherwise. The toilets were no cleaner for men either so just pass!
One of my favorite parks! People play music or drums here and it’s so entertaining.
Washington Square Park at the heart of Greenwich Village is a favorite hang out spot for many New Yorkers, it's fun year round but I think the summer time is the best because there is always something going on like music or magic or giant bubbles for the kids.
Always something good.
Lovely place by NYU. Crowded with people in the afternoon. You can grab a book a sit by the benches or by the small grass field.
Beautiful place to spend a lovely summer evening. Lots of sunshine, a big monument and lots of people. It is near 9th street path station in lower part of manhattan. Children playing musical instruments. People chilling in the fountain cooling with the water. One of the best parks in manhattan.
Gorgeous, bustling park with lots to do. Great views, especially for people watching. From spring to fall the flowers in the park are amazing! They create a lot of vibrant color! Sometimes there are cool shows in the park as well!
Beautiful place! So many great people here. Definitely recommend for someone who enjoys listening to live music in parks.
Very nice for a stop and go in 🗽 NYC of you have packed lunched. Public ⛣ restroom 🚽 available if you need. Suggested to bring your own sandwich 🥪 and a towel to lay down in the park …
One of my favorite hang out spots in the city. Always something to see, but also an oasis of calm.
Wonderful. I loved the vantage points. The artists, performers and strolling people give the area a positive, energetic atmosphere.
Lot of people
There is A dog area where we can bring dogs to play around
Park is clean
You can find people to play chess
Calm location
Giving 4 stars because , every time I went
I saw someone sick and vomiting or high due to alcohol and behaved a little bad..this should be rectified
Restrooms are available in the park..maintained normal..
Kinda fun. Went super late at night and there was a lot of people. Only there for a minute until it closed and they made everyone leave
An historic park with Grand Arch and a fountain where people gather to hear music or trade stories and urban legends. Surrounded by New York University, the neighborhood is the birthplace of literary great Henry James.
Beautiful Park. Great place to walk a little. day or night
Many people, lots of noice. But they have a decent dog run, and I go there when I have a chance. Actually they have even 2 dog runs. The second is small and it’s for small dogs.
The park is sokko popular, the day we were there, there's s group of young people recording and dancing. It was definitely fun. So much to see and explore around this area.
Was a wonderful time with my family. The performers were very generous with their attention to the kids even though the kids were unruly. The giant bubbles were a huge hit. Fountain was pretty as well.
Washington Square Park is beautiful at night. It's a great place to chill in the evening. It's got a cool, laid-back vibe with all of the people also hanging out there during the evening.
Pretty cool place. A lot of wonderful and joyful people there. Police officers ensuring the public safety as well.
Nice park for families, you can play chess with good players
The best and worst of New York City in a park. A very popular destination bustling with everyone from creatives, potheads, students, to hustlers.
It's both a spectical and an oasis.
Oh, it's just beautiful!! A must see if you come to NYC, no matter how short a time you're there for. The park is wonderful, the atmosphere is as well. And of course, the fountain with the new world trade center behind it, is simply gorgeous!!
Famous, but non-spectacular park at the southern end of 5th Avenue.
A nice park with a lot of life, especially at night. You will enjoy a lot of small concert or dance performance.
Washington square park is always entertaining. Its where all the cool kids are and it never disappoints. I make it up here when i come to town, and stop for lunch nearby.
Just love this park, it's a quick trip from my home, so I can come here and relax, take a break from my work. Nice place.
Beautiful square where children can play and adults can rest
It’s New York City! What is there not to like. Most days it’s crowded, but it’s lively. One area of the park have bums/homeless people in one area so be careful.
Most chaotic Christmas carols I have ever attended as the cold weather froze the instruments but not the two groups of people singing different carols.
Nice place to mingle and chill. There is a playground for the kids. Big fountain to watch. The ambiance is alright. Enjoy!
Nice park with cleaner restrooms, a dog park, a children's playground. It was very busy with the usual characters.
DJ's first playdate at a great park. He was smiling from cheek to cheek. 🐾 …
A funky mix open case skaters and NYU students with local neighbors and chess players. Old school West Village Side Groove. Plenty of food and drinks options with music a few blocks away on every direction.
always something fun happening here!!
Great park, max chaos at all times of the day, cool arch, some corners are sketchy at night.
As a friends fan, great place. As a tourist, good spot, restrooms not so much.
More than pleasing experience in Washington Square Park. Went there because of the Arch but actually there is really more to it than that. Street artists, kids playgrounds and great landscape design make this park one of the must visits in NYC
Great space for relaxing… food, vendors and fairs. Summertime is a great place to be…
Very nice park to sit and people watch.
After the pandemic, I am happy to see people back!
Nice area for the locals and tourists. Have a rest..eat something or have a talk. Enjoy the place and the area. Great building are there.
Turn of the century architectural styles inspired by Greek and Roman ancient Gods! Love their facade!
Good park to stay in sunny day! You will gonna love there to do sunbathing. Here is where a spot of filming Begin Again. I love that movie, so I did enjoy a lot when I walked around in this park.
This iconic park is one of the best places in the city to relax, unwind and people watch.
A very nice area, a mini Arc....lot of people around but not enough to make it uncomfortable. There's a dog off leash area which had at least a dozen dogs all going crackers over each other.
The ambiance the vibes the people…
However lot of weeeed cannot get your child away from
Smelling those stuff
The site is beautiful, rather crowded, but lots of things to see and do. If you enjoy the vibe of a university with students, musicians, and artists hanging around than this is the perfect park for you. The bathrooms are small but easily accessible if you’re walking through the neighborhood.
Such a lively public space to meet people and relax. Great positive energy with young spirit. I encounter the dyke parade for the proud month on 6/29 this year. It is amazing to see how New York support everyone no matter where you come from.
IT IS MY HOME WHEN I'M NOT AT HOME.
IT'S DEFINITELY MY LIVING ROOM.
LOTS TO SEE AND DO HERE.
2 PLAYGROUNDS FOR THE KIDS OLDER AND BABIES.
MUSICIANS,ARTISTS ETC.
Came here to support the main man himself, Andrew Yang, at his NYC rally. The park is stomping grounds for many NYU students so expect the people there to lean younger and more hip. A great spot on a nice warm day. There are often performances by street artists so keep an eye out for crowds gathering if you like that sort of thing.
Used to live very close to here and find myself here all of the time. One of the best places to people watch in the city hands down!
There's always so much going on in this park and it's really beautiful, especially on a sunny day!
I love this park! It brings back so many great memories from my childhood. It was always bustling with life. Kids running around, music blaring on radios, and carts with hot dogs, piraguas, and balloons. Now…there’s lots of vendors selling weed. I hope it was only because it was cold that there so many people selling marijuana than other things. Still, a beautiful park and beautiful area.
This gem is right in the middle of the concrete jungle and at a beautiful location in the university's environs. This is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the ambience.
What a fabulous park with so much action and people displaying their talents
Columbus circus one of the most iconic place very beautiful place to visit next to trump tower you will cross the place many times when you visit or stay central park or nearby
enjoy your visit!!!
Beautiful arch. Fairytale of New York and I am Legend filmed close to here.
