Reviews of Coldwater Spring
I love that places like these that are preserved for their history and provided (without cost) for the public to explore and enjoy! A big thank-you, given to all those for whom has given of their time to allow others, such as myself, to find solace and peace among these pathways of wildflowers, trees, and the natural nature preserve that is underway! I very much appreciate you!
Great place for hiking and walking the dog. There is an off-leash dog area that is a blast for everyone and an extensive network of paths that will keep you moving for a whole afternoon or more if you choose to explore the area. Some paths have steep inclines, so come prepared with proper footwear and expect a workout if you hike.
Lots of dogs, as it’s next to the Minnehaha off leash dog park… which isn’t completely fenced, so you’ll run into the occasional off leash dog. It’s a beautiful area, with some cool structures to check out and trails to wander. The dog park is towards the river, so avoid going that way, if you’re not a dog person.
Loved the walking trails :)
Beautiful and the water is soo clear even tho it has lots of algea growing in it. Lots of trails.
Beautiful nature trails and river hikes that make you forget you’re in the heart of Minneapolis. Many people walking dogs.
There is easy access to a large trail network that runs through woods leads to Fort Snelling and Minnehaha Falls. I am not sure how many miles. My group walked around for 2 hours enjoying nature.
Nice place to visit that isnt as traveled as minnehaha falls or fort snelling. Good hiking and lots of mileage. Great place to walk your dogs
Love walking my dogs here. It's usually quiet.
I only wish more people would heed the posted rules about dogs needing to be on leash. One of my dogs does not enjoy being approached by unknown dogs. I really enjoy this park aside from seeing 1-5 off leash dogs each time we go when it's nice out.
The off-leash dog park is up the road.
What a wonderful place to walk during sunset! The deer were so close.
Interesting with a small castle structure over what appeared to be a natural spring, but not much more than a short lope hiking trail. If you follow to the north you will hit Minnehaha Falls. If you follow to the south you hit Pike Island, where the Minnesota and Mississippi River intersect.
Per an earlier review it is true, there are fields packed with a huge variety of native wildflowers and plants that are especially gorgeous in the evening light. The spring building is pretty. Paths (paved and natural surface) here go south all the way to Ft Snelling State Park (a pleasant jog of a few miles) and north to Minnehaha Falls and beyond (in fact, all the way to the Stone Arch Bridge and beyond).
Not a very long trail. Pretty boring/lackluster. Only one good area for pictures really.
Love taking my daughter to hike here. She didn't want to come for a walk/ hike, but ended up loving it here. Lots of scenery. A few great places to get photos.
This is a wonderful place, deep history and fantastic scenery. The spring flows year-round at 45 gallons/min. Not recommended for drinking as it's tributaries are impacted by road runoff. Reservoir doesn't freeze in winter. Be cautious. Sprimg structure is 100+ years old and still looking good. I don't know what the other reviews mean when they say there's little to no hiking. I spent 2 hrs. hiking the prairie and forest areas. I easily could have spent anothr 2 hra. I only left early bc my parking was expiring. Look for the National Park Service progras here including the BARK Ranger program to ”swear" in your dog as an honorary park ranger complete with a cute little doggy badge 😍 Trails are well maintained. Most trails are gravel or short prairie grass. Accessible parking is available past the road, closer to the spring.
Long trails. Beautiful views. Different elevations. Lot of history.
Short little loop around a natural spring. Supposedly Bishop Henry Whipple gathered here with local indigenous people.
I absolutely love going here. It’s not super well marked so it can be confusing, but there’s so many hidden gems.
Such a nice quiet place. There are ticks here so check your furries when you get home.
One of my favorite places to walk. It's very peaceful.
Nice trails that seem to be well maintained
Awesome fun national park great for in
Beautiful in the fall, and plenty of bird watching opportunities.
It's beautiful, but people lack real knowledge of it's history. Its actually a sacred site for Native Americans to pray, and perform ceremony's. However, the government and NPS refuse to acknowledge
This is more of a conservation area than a park, amenities should be minimal and what is there is ample, clean, tended. See Wikipedia's brief and somewhat sad history of this site.
What you will see now are ruins, remnants of its former American Army occupiers. Think I would've liked to see it in it's former glory as a reliable year-round source of fresh clean drinking water for surrounding first nations peoples and as a gathering place for important ceremonies, rituals, meetings and celebrations.
Open all year round, it's also a way station for Monarch butterflies on their seasonal migration. It has a treat to offer for every season and a fresh new face everytime you visit
A fun little hike to explore some Minnesota history.
This area has been completely transformed thanks to the National Park Service's management. What was an abandoned mining facility just a few years ago is now becoming a native savanna. Great place to walk around and then head down to the river.
This is a tiny historic site on a lovely trail system. If you're driving here, you can either park in one of the nearby Park Board pay lots, or find residential-area parking and walk farther.
This is one of the most sacred places in the area. I visit it with reverence and awe. I loved it before they enhanced the park aspect, and it's even more enjoyable now. I just wish that engineers would stop engaging in activities which reduce the flow of water to the site.
Minnehaha Falls is right next door and vastly more popular, but Coldwater Spring has much better, more winding trails and is dog friendly. You can also rent bikes and ride them around the area.
Cool place to visit. A bit off the beaten path.
Adjacent to the Minneapolis dog park, a wonderful place to let your dogs off leash, without anybody hassling you(too much(occasionally you get the "by the book," parks department guy who insists they be leashed until they're in the area down by the Mississippi)).
It is beautiful, serene, a "good story" and walking distance from a METRO station. This time I was there in conjunction with. A visit to the nearby dog park.
Coldwater spring is a like a fairytale location hidden in the city. The spring runs all winter, and keeps the pond open. You'll find ducks swimming here all winter. It's just a short walk from the dog park and Fort Snelling, so it's a quick winter walk.
Had a really beautiful interaction with a velvety buck here last week. Such a wonderful thing to experience wild life like that inside of a city!
Beautiful spot
Beautiful place to walk in fall. My husband and I took our dog through a couple of the trails and it was a relaxing and beautiful experience.
Great little bonus find on the Minnehaha trail between Fort Snelling and the falls.
Great landscaping and lots of ducks and critters hanging out. Easy to hike, harder to find. Get out and explore.
Beautiful park! Love the historic stone "Castle" spring house, the paths and ponds, the prairie and twisty oaks--plus the trails down to the river.
Great trails right now, bring gloves and bag to pick up garbage... Unfortunately too many people leave things behind.
Cool place in the city. Love to walk my dog there.
Fun place, ran into 3 different dog walkers with dogs off leash that ran right towards our kids, otherwise lovely place
Terrific place to get lost and find your self!
Water is life. This scared site has been restored as an oak savanna. Exploring the National park here and the wildlife signs makes me excited and restore me
Fun area
Can't wait to see this place after spring blooms.
Interesting but not per se spectacular. Cool looking walking trail map but I was on a recubent road bike so didn't look further.
When you first find this place you might not see what it's all about. Keep going. Explore and you'll find out. It's magical. If there are unicorns in the twin cities... they live here.
For native people, its sad that water is poison , and somebody had spray paint some thing ugly on the marker, Minneapolis has not taken care of historical stuff and water how sad
They're taking away the parking so it is a park with no parking, because our federal bureaucracy is anything if not petty. With usage comes those who abuse places, so the natural response of the bureaucrats is spiteful. So basically they don't want you there I guess. No parking means no visitors.
We were surprised and happy with the renovation for natural habitats. It is beautiful.
I really enjoy coming here and hiking the area with my dog. In the winter it's amazing how clear and unfrozen the water is.
Amazing dog park. Great trails. Really clean. Good swimming in the river.
Cool trails right off Hiawatha Ave, near the off leash dog park.
Probably the best off leash dog park in the world. Great place to take a walk and let your dogs burn off energy.
Park is beautiful but I guess they found out they can get a lot on money from parking meters so now you HAVE to pay parking. It was free until this year...
Cool place to see and explore and it's just in the city but feels like you're up north.
Nice biking trail to Minehaha falls. Also next to best dog park in twin cities!
So much history and so unknown. Spring is compromised by highway construction.
Thanks to all who helped to save this sacred place/water from Mndot filling it in during the reroute of highway 55. *Preserve Camp Coldwater Coalition, *Friends of Coldwater, Mendote' Dakota Tribe, *Earthfirst, *Stop the Reroute Coalition and others everywhere, you know who you are! :o) NPS didn't have to much to do with saving it, but they sure took it over in true conqueror fashion! Quite the walk to see the Spring from the new parking area. It says not to drink the water, but go ahead, if it's from the source, it's in your Native traditions to gather sacred water from this spring that has been flowing for over 11,000 years, and the flow has been cut in half from all the destruction/construction. Nice scenery but there is no parking
One of Minneapolis's finest birding areas. Beautiful, especially in spring and fall.
Fun place to walk a dog or with a friend lots to see in nature plants and animals
Very quite and beautiful location right in between st. Paul and Minneapolis. Very highly recommended!!
Beautiful area. Really well landscaped. Dont drink the water.
Nice place to walk your dog or not, great place to photograph birds.
Beautiful example of an oak savannah mixed with maple basswood forest
Beautiful! Hidden gem. Go and thank me later.
Loved it
I had a lovely time. Beautiful location. Would definitely return.
Beautiful park with a natural spring right on the trail
Relaxing and peaceful place. One of my favorite places to get lost in...
Nice park. Has great views for everyone.
It's just a very fun place to explore.
It's beautiful, the water is poised, for native people,
Historic setting and meeting place of Dakota and Ojibwe people.
Great dog park with riverbanks, fields, and a forest!
Great little prairie park with a small pins and spring.
Very beautiful PPL shud stop and enjoy god nature
Beautiful place to walk your dog
Peaceful and perfectly maintained walking paths.
The river is running a bit high right now so a lot of the area is under water.
Cool little gem in Minneapolis. Beautiful easy walking paths.
Good in spring, as stated.
Also good in other seasons, as not stated.
I was right out there with the wildlife! Come and see!😉 …
