Reviews of Fern Dell Nature Trail
A bit of a challenge if you go all the way up to the Griffith Park Observatory, especially if you're with little kids and it's a warm day. I passed several crying kids who were complaining about the climb to their parents. But you'll be rewarded with great views. Then get your kid a Snake Dog at the Trails Cafe on the way back down, and they'll be happy again. Parking is really hard to find, though, especially on weekends.
Fern Dell is absolutely gorgeous - it is such a nice calming, shady, lush location to walk around and get a break from the hustle and bustle of LA. There are mini waterfalls, fish, turtles and birds.
Parking is free and is either on the street side or there areparking spots near the trailhead, The Trails Cafe. Near the Trails cafe/playground there are portable toilets.
From here there is easy access to the Observatory via hiking or driving.
Looking for an escape from the concert jungle?!?! This is the place for you even if you haven’t thought about getting away! Beautiful nature trails, playground and even a small cafe to look forward to!! 🙌👍🏼🪨🧉🥤🥐 🚶⛰ …
This park is a nice place to get away from the busy city. It's very peaceful and calm. The flor and fauna reminds me of Costa Rica. The best time to go is after it rains, as you can hear and see the water flowing down stream, There are plenty of benches to sit down and take in the scenery.
I love this trail. It's peaceful and you can make it as easy or as challenging as you want as it branches out to different trails.
Lots of Free Parking. Many trails to follow. You may see deer, coyotes, rabbits, Hawks and other wildlife. A fantastic getaway just minutes from downtown Los Angeles. The views are stunning!😮. P.S. One of the best places to observe the Hollywood Sign is Lake Hollywood Park. Free Parking. Playground for children at Fern Dell Nature Trail. Great place to take children for under child care!
This trail was perfect! If you aren’t up for the hike up to the observatory, you can walk up from the entrance to the teeny tiny cafe and enjoy a bite and some delicious coffee and the scenery.
Found parking right by entry on a Saturday morning. Great easy/medium levels hike up to the observatory and views of the city.
If your not a big hiker but want to move the body. Be in a nice scenery this is it! I found fishes, turtles and mini lobsters in the streams following the trail
This is such a beautifully created space. It looks like the plants were quite meticulously curated once upon a time. As it is at the moment (though still a pretty walk) it made me think, "that's somewhat how I picture a dystopian future where humans no longer exist to maintain planned plant spaces, so they grow wild." I don't "not" like it. Totally recommend! 🌱😁🌿
A beautiful short trail if you don’t head on upwards to Griffith Observatory.
Always a beautiful walk. My dog loves it. In the past I had thought it was a loop…is it not?? This past time we ended up on a trail the led towards the observatory & saw a gorgeous sunset! Easy, pretty and relaxing spot!
Great place for a pleasant walk or day hike. You can choose to hike up the dirt trails that lead up to the Griffith Observatory, or you can keep it mellow and shaded by staying on lower ground and walking on the peaceful paths of Fern Dell park proper. No parking after sundown/car will be towed when it's dark outside.
Great place to walk. Free parking along the road
Beautiful hike. Scenery was absolutely gorgeous
Really recommend short hike up to the griffith observatory!
We went on this trail on a Sunday. The parking by the main entrance is tuff because weekends are usually very busy. The first part of the trail is nice and easy in the shade. There is a creek that runs along side the trail with turtles and crawfish. After 3 quarters of a mile, we will pass a playground and the shadeless uphill dirt road begins. You should reach the observatory after about a mile of moderate hike. Always feel good reaching the top to the obvervatory.
A really beautiful, peaceful trail! There's benches along the trail if you want to stop by and enjoy nature. It's also a fairly easy hike to the observatory if you start from here :)
Beautiful place to stop by and enjoy nature with many trails to hike up to. Great spot to take a walk to just relax your mind or enjoy time by yourself or with friends and family.
Such a beautiful place, so peaceful.
During the rain or a bit after it, makes this place magical.
Come take a walk beneath tall trees and moss, across tall grass and clover. Spy on squirrels, rabbits and birds as they scurry away or fly above.
Take a break on a bench and enjoy the view.
Snap a picture from a small bridge, or beneath branches.
Listen to the cars buzz by, honking, blasting 🎶 as they drive by in the distance.
Say hello to a few dozen strangers from behind a mask during the pandemic.
Buy a cup or container of fresh-cut fruit from a local vendor, wearing gloves, and a surgical mask at the time of this review write.
Allow your dogs to say hi to other dogs. Lie on the grass after your hike through the trees.
Catch your breath, collect your thoughts, bring a good read. Sky, trees, grass, hills, in the city of angels. Come cross paths, reflect, walk, climb. It's beautiful here.
Beautiful and serene walk in a quiet corner of Griffith Park. Very flat and about 1.5 long it really is easy for all ages and health levels. Tons of squirrels, birds, turtles and fish to see. Can get crowded on the wknds but it’s still a great place to walk and chat
High traffic trail that is beautiful and spacious. We accidentally took an off the path trail that took us straight up to the Observatory, but it was awesome to have a nature adventure in the city. The views at the top are amazing
Beautiful! We took the nature trail and then went left and took the trail that lead to the observatory. It was very hot and on an incline, but the views were amazing.
A fantastic trail that feeds into the larger trails going up to Griffith Observatory. Quiet and very few people on a weekday early morning.
Great short hiking trail that leads thru shaded tress and a stream of water. There are short bridges which at the end lead to a playground for kids. One can continue on a trail which can lead to the Griffith observatory. It's 15-25 min walk depending on your walking speed. Trails are wide and easy to walk and can even pull a stroller. Views of L.A. are rewarding at the top. Street Parking is free but limited. Open from sunrise to sunset.
Great trail, lots of changes in elevation. Bring lots of water as there are very few areas to fill up. Also, little to no restrooms so make sure to go before hand. Also on the trail there are horses, so beware of droppings.
The perfect short trail for all abilities. We love the stream and bridges. There is a bit of mud and the end part was closed due to bridge work but it was still fun! At the end of the short hike are many picnic benches, a cafe and a fun playground! There are bathrooms near the playground only. Look for parking in the neighborhood off los feliz instead of up the hill.
Fern Dell provides a lovely hike, little date/picnic spot and a good place to unwind... without having to drive an hour out of the city.
Great for families, couples and individuals. And lots of PUPPY-DOGS!!!
Worth it!! Take water! Keep going and enjoy the views. Follow the Google maps and park on the street. Unless you want to pay $15 an hour and not walk to the Griffith observatory.
My dogs and I have a great time on the trail. It’s designed to be an enchanting little spot, along a tiny creek with waterfalls and benches and gorgeous tropical plants in little vignettes, even bridges and a tunnel. I read the history of the trail after we left. It’s a magical place and I can imagine it being beloved in it’s heyday. Stop by Trails cafe afterwards for coffee and treats.
Wonderful oasis in the middle of the city. Glad that it is still open in the midst of Covid.
I love being able to share places like this that I enjoyed as a kid with my kids now.
I'm also glad that street parking is free unlike up by the Observatory where they charge $15 per hour now!
First time here and I'll be back again. I looked up a trail that was stroller friendly and this was perfect! Finding beautiful fun hikes is difficult with a baby but this was perfect! Great views, family friendly and stroller friendly.
This trial gives you a good amount of shade for the most part. The trial provides a tropical forest with river flow. Until you enter the freestyle alternatives road trials. In addition, the views are incredible all around. Please make sure you bring sufficient water.
This is a beautiful paradise.
My friend told me about this place when I told her I love to catch Crawfish as a child.
So I loaded the kids in the car and we headed out. It very easy to get to and very close to the entrance at Griffith park.
Love this place, beautiful foliage , small streams, Dragonflies Dancing all around and tiny little Crawfish everywhere.
Great place for kids, picnicking, or walking the dog. I'm going back with a date next time. It's romantic too...
So peaceful! Loved every second of it.
Definitely a must visit place in LA. Such a dramatic difference from the environment anywhere else in LA
The park itself is tiny and shaded. Perfect for a short lunch walk or taking the kids. At the end of it you have option to continue onward and upward about another mile to reach Griffith Observatory.
A good trail for someone wanting to get back into hiking after a long break. Starts off very easy and progressively gets a little bit harder, nothing strenuous, but just enough to get your heart pumping. Beautiful views all the way, though no shade so pick your time correctly. There are water fountains at the Observatory. There is a nice viewing platform about 5 minutes before you get to the Observatory that has great views of LA and on a clear day, after the rain you can see all the way to the ocean. Wear hiking shoes because the trail is gravelly and you could slip, twist your ankle or worse your knee on the way down. Trust me, you don't want that. Have a beautiful hike and leave no trace, stay on the path!

It's a pretty nice park, however it barely has any ferns. A quiet place, has a few benches, a small stream running through.
Great Place to bring your pets for a walk!
Lots of shade and free parking!
Really wonderful trail. We took it all the way to the observatory. It’s a good hike!
This is why I love LA. No matter how long you live in LA, look a little further and you are destined to find another gem!!! I didn't even know that Griffith Park had this gem on the west side of the park!!!
Great trails for walking and running, lots of great picnic areas, and of courae- leads to the observatory with some great city views.
Disney fairytale worlds were modeled after this trail for sure. The moment you step in, its other worldly. A beautiful stroll for ALL, so a good hike alternative for those with kids, or less able bodied. You do not have to start the main hike, there is enough flat-ish trail to satisfy all. Lovely streams and waterfalls etc. A MUST. A MUST. Even just 30 mins will leave you happy if short on time. Parking is parallel to the train on the other side of the trees.
It's a nice trail. Go on a semi-cloudy day because as you walk up there is a lot of exposure to the sun. The views are worth it, and it's a new way to explore Griffith.
Very nice and scenic trail for those that are not the most experienced hikers. The loop back to the base is also very relaxed.
I remember this space from my childhood. Walking around with my mom & sometimes my sister. It was more lush back in the 70s but it's still a great space to walk and get out of the city in the middle of the city 😊 …
Super nice and beautiful trail, multiple paths to choose from, easy or more challenging options. excited to go back and explore them all many more times!
One of my favorite spots in Griffith Park. Did you know that you could experience a rainforest in Los Angeles? Gets busy on the weekend so if you can come on a weekday you’ll be able to fully take in the calmness and serenity of the environment
Was a great adventure kids including me loved it. We was surprised to see a family of Crawfish's and turtle's. We just forgot our zoomzooom & snacks in the car. But we enjoyed it at best.
Easy route for beginner level. This path reach to Griffith Observatory and can be continue hike to Hollywood sign.
Very nice shady, tropical stroll. Easy for strollers, dogs, elders etc. It's like a jungle cruise stroll.
Cute hike to take the kiddos and fam for a stroll. Lots of shade. Accessible walkway for baby strollers and hand rails for those who need it. The fam had a great time and we saw a lot of crawfish. 🦞 …
It's so relaxing and calming watching the turtles and the fish in the pond. For a brief moment you forget that you live in a city of 12.5 million people.
A cool riparian oasis. Lush trees and tiny creek home to many fish turtles and crayfish.
A truly hidden nature trail gem in LA. You can walk or hike thru nature and wild life on the way to the Griffith observatory.
Peaceful trail that offers you a view of a different side of Griffith Park. Take it all the way up to the observatory, and look out for the fun ridge trail you can tackle on the way back down. Note that it gets crowded on the weekends - but you can park in the residential neighborhood across the street.
The start to my favorite hike in LA, the Hollywood hike. I like to do this hike just to gaze at all the beautiful foliage and enjoy the energy of the trail. One of my favorite places and hikes on earth. So many good memories from hikes here
Buggy, bring bug spray but nice shaded trail with some wildlife to see
It's such a Beautiful...Peaceful...and relaxing walk its BEYOND GORGEOUS🥰 Especially for professional pictures📸 …
Nice, quick workout. Parking is tough during winter months. No parking after sunset.
It's a Great place to get out and take a stroll
Cute little area inside Griffith Park. Would be nicer when they have the irrigation fixed or after a rain. Still nice to walk and see turtles and lots of benches to sit in the shade.
Beautiful sunset.
I love the view!!
Great place to take the kids. Its FREE! Nice place to cool off when its hot. The lower trail has a nice stream with fish, crawdads, frogs and plants. The park side has plenty of places to have a picnic. Playgrounds and BBQ spots a little bit up the hill. Farther up is where you can hike all the way to Griffith Observatory. Lots of street parking until its busy and it gets really busy. Not many places with water features in LA, this is one of the best.
Is beautiful the way was build look very natural you will thighs that you are far away of LA
This trail was nice and simple, well for me compared to the hikes I normally do. I took my 2 year old daughter on a Osprey backpack carrier and was able to hike with no issues. But again, I am a backpacker. If you're not an everyday hiker you may find it a bit hard. I tracked my hike from the base and there was a 1200 feet elevation gain. Take water, but not much is needed. I took a liter and was a bit too much for me, but better to have more than less. There really isn't any shade so on a hot day it could get a little more challenging and you may require more water and snacks. I enjoyed the views and my daughter enjoyed the kids playground after the hike for sure. I would recommend this hike and there is a little coffee shop at the base as well that sells refreshments and sandwiches as well as breakfast. It's called Trails Cafe I believe and is opened until 2pm.
For a nice walk along a trail to get away, even though in the city this is a wonderful little honeycone hike out 🥰 …
Beautiful and serene trail in the middle of Hollywood. Don't miss the Observatory up top with beautiful views.
Beautiful, shady place to stroll through nature while still being in the midst of LA. Beautiful shady trail along a cool creek.
I took the LOOP TRAIL with just enough incline to make one's heart beat faster. The LOWER FERN DELL is so beautiful with trees, ponds, turtles, bridges, and big fish. I even got acquainted with this dragonfly.
Wonderful. Made all the way up to Griffith Park Observatory!👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 …
Beautiful nice easy walk on the lower area
Very beautiful and relaxing spot for those who just want to have a few moments away from the city chaos, it gets very dark at night so be careful as there is no lights
Nice quick hike about 4 hour with family even my 8 year old getting it
A great place to walk and view the small stream where you can see small crustaceans. Any other animals you see their might be invasive or feral pets! If the animal you see in the stream doesn't match with the foliage and dirt it is probably a pet somebody threw. If you see a turtle with a red stripe on the sode of its head then it is also a feral pet. I once saw a frog wuth an injured eye in the stream but I don't if it is feral or not. If you see any feral animals please call animal services or anybody who can help get them out! Other than that the trail is great. And at the end of the stream(it ends near the bridge and you can see where it used to go through) there is a small playground where your children can go play and a public restroom. I highly recommend this place to tourists and locals if you have never visited!
It is a good place to hike or go for a walk.
Get awesome views from this Trail. The trail is about 0.7 miles almost a mile. Took pictures and videos. This is a great trail to come up and do some hiking to the Griffith Observatory. Just be careful while walking up in the hill there's some bumps. They should add a another restroom up here as well. Other then that it's awesome walking up here.
A beautiful place quiet and lots of plants a place to lose yourself for a while
Dude was nice, place was clean and had a few top of the line glass bongs. Unfortunately don’t come here if you are looking for items pertaining to concentrates unless you are looking for top of the line $200-$600 E rigs like the carta and the puff co products. They had like no bangers no variety of terp pearls or rigs. Didn’t even have Bear products. Which is basic for the concentrate community.
A lovely trail and option to hike to the Observatory, magnificent views and splendid way to spend time with family!
Beautiful trail, steady incline. Wildlife all around. 5 stars.
Great place to visit
It is a very short trail, but it is still nice. A waterway runs through it, but the stream always seems to be almost bone dry. It must be nice when it has water flowing through, and not just pools of stagnant liquid. It is quieter than other areas because it is about 10 feet below street level. It is nice and shaded and has some benches to sit on.
Street parking only. On a weekday, it's not crowded and offers peace and quiet. There's a trail next to a [mostly] running stream. Towards the end of the trail, there's a playground and restrooms. If you continue past the playground, you can hike directly to the observatory.
lovely spot shaded and cool with benches
I love taking the kids for a walk here! So much shade in the begging if trail by the time we reach the playground they're already tired
Awesome hung trails, for everyone of all levels. Bring your fur baby, ample space for them to run around. Playground areas for children and lots of opportunities for photo ops. Dirt trails, shaded areas, some completely uncovered, but great exercise every time
Good for entry to moderate level of hiking
This place is such a gem. Babbling creek through the Los Angeles? Amazing!
Great for the family! Even your pet will enjoy it especially when it's overcast! The view is amazing, when you reach the observatory. It makes you feel like you're you're somewhere else. And with all that nature around you when you start the hike, really nice! Then, to see your beautiful Los Angeles! It is worth it! A good hour and half hike you can't go wrong. It doesn't need much of Maintenance around there but there are some dirty people that like to litter. Other than that it's really nice and friendly! Can't wait to go back with my fambam and dog!!
Wish the city had enough to restore the gardens and stream, maybe volunteers? Still its a safe place to walk with plenty of shade.
Pleasant little hike surrounded by foliages and trees on my big hike to the Griffith Park observatory.
What a beautiful and easy hike. The first half of mile of this adventure felt like a botanical garden with plenty of shade. Then the way up to the Observatory was exposed but a doable climb. Bring water to stay hydrated.
Total hidden city gem...
I've live my whole life in LA & never knew of this place/park. My mom had brought me to Griffith Park as young as 5yrs old (50yrs old now) & I'm just finding this section of the park.
It's a very busy section, parking is based on luck but once you've parked the walk along Fern Dell is sooo beautiful. Then up the way is the Trail cafe, a big playground, and hiking trails.
Perfect for the whole family.
On a hot summer day, it is fresh with all tress and shade. It is like a small fairytale. Nothing like a city. You are surrounded by nature, different kinds of plants. During the summer, the small river runs and there are small fish and turtles as well. There's plenty of free parking from 5 am until sunset. It is part of a large park.
This trail is one worth seeing! There are squirrels, turtles, kohi fish and other tiny creatures in the water. The smell of woods and sound of the water is breath taking and so relaxing. It’s hard to find the entrance if you’re new. It’s easier to climb up to the play ground on the regular pathway and enter through the end if you’re having a hard time finding the trial.
FYI this is close to Griffith Park and it can get a bit crowded. If you go early am or right before sunset, you can really enjoy a mild quiet hike, very kid friendly. Picnic space every where, the further you go up. If you would like to go for a nice walk with a creek and shaded path this is the place. Be sure to enter at the entrance to appreciate the nature this place offers. Hopefully you can find the turtle and koi in the creek. Enjoy!!!!
Ferndail trail takes you into an enchanted Forest for a moment. Loved walking here with my mom and relaxing on a Sunday afternoon!
Cute little nature trail. Great for small kids to explore a little.
Love this cute little walk. Very peaceful and it get in tune with nature
Great stroll through this tree lined area. Parking can be tough, but don't worry their is a lot at end of the road. Park and follow the trail in the same direction you drove in. Worth it for this LA hidden gem.
Very nice place it has multiple trail to go up the hill. Awesome experience with mother nature...
Fun, easy walk on the other side of Griffith Park!
Beautiful hiking trail with scenic views
I love this trail with a small creek. Usually I go there in the afternoon and then I go to Griffith observatory. It’s not too hot at Fern dell trail even if it’s really hot at the neighborhood. Come and see a lot of different species of plants!
Beautiful getaway.
Serene paths and streams.
I love the smells and sounds.
AMAZING energy flow.
I love going to Ferndell. I love that its not packed with tourists!
Love this little hidden gem in Griffith park. The Ferndell connects to many other trails. I walked up to the observatory just wish I brought some water. There are lots of elevation changes and lots of paths. Definitely go early so you can find parking which can be hard
Very nice and friendly, although the water did smell a little bit I think the city should change it or have it cleaned more often
Best place to hike while seeing some greenery . The trails are also pretty easy and not to long to finish !
This place is an oasis in the middle of a busy city. I came here with my 5-month-old Yorkie puppy and my bf around 3:30 PM on a Saturday last week and it was super nice. The trail is short but it leads you to an opening where there's a really nice children's playground with restrooms, a BBQ area, and the trailhead of a bunch of other hikes leading to the Hollywood Sign and the Griffith Observatory.
It was during COVID so there were a ton of other people with their friends, family, and dogs having picnics and hanging out in the surrounding areas outside of the trail. There were plenty of space for everyone and I never felt like it was too crowded. I'd highly recommend coming here even if it's just to hang out in the area to be in nature.
Parking can be a bit tricky if you go during peak hours though. Luckily we found street parking right by the trail. Everything was free and we found it a great way to spend your time on a weekend.
Visiting this trails almost transports you out of the city. It's absolutely lovely.
Pet and children friendly trail. There is a variety of vegetation and animals. Its vivid in color anywhere you look! Seems like a good place to go after a rain fall.
I love walking through here especially after a wet morning. it's the less crowded and more scenic way to Griffith Park's hiking trails, however, the path under the bridge is unaccessible as of 11/4/19.
Nice short walk along a creek (15 min). Just off Los Feliz Blvd at entrance to Griffith Park. Parking may be a problem during popular hours. At the end of the trail, after going through a tunnel under the road, you can stop at a cafe on the other side of the road for coffee & homemade pastries.
I like taking my little dog walking here, especially when it is really hot because there is a lot of shade... However, the trail is not paved so she gets really dirty. Not a big deal though. I've seen turtles, friendly dogs and people. Cross the street if you want tall trees and grass.
No shade steep slope.
IT'S A STINKY WORLD OUT THERE...Someones got to sniff it!!
IT'S great it's quiet it's just nice
Some of the best ecological diversity in the whole park! The trail to the observatory only takes about 30 minutes from the base.
Love this trail, it doesn't feel like you are in the same park.
There's 3 picnic tables in this area. Nice quiet place to get a way from the city noise
It's a nice easy path with some picnic tables and a children's playground along it. You can get to the more challenging hike up to the observatory from here.
One of my favorite hikes of all time at Griffith Park (1.5 miles) - this hike takes you up to the Griffith Observatory and if you’re looking for an extended hike, it connects to the Griffith Park Observatory Trail/Peak.
There’s a few large inclines so be prepared for a full leg workout.
There’s plenty of street and lot parking.
Playground and bathroom at the foot of the trail.
Great trail for toddlers. There is a playground about 10 mins into the trail. And we saw turtles and fish lobster crustrations and had a great time everyone was wearing masks and kept a good distance. 🙂👍👍 …
Love this fern trail. So much good oxygen to breathe in! It's only about a quarter mile long but a lot of benches to sit on, and little streams through it. Awesome little trail before you get to the trail to the Griffith Observatory.
One of my family’s favorite trail. Kids love it here! Safe and fun!
This was at one time an absolutely lovely park with a live stream running through it..complete with crawdads and fish. The stream dried up decades ago. The trail is still fairly pretty in places. There is a playground in the upper part. Continue walking up, and you will hit dirt trails that eventually lead up to the Observatory. Actually, that is a nice and popular hike.
Beautiful, but they could maintain the spring some.
Nice walk, but the water is contaminated with sewage and runoff, and last time we went there was a dead rat being eaten by the crayfish. Which I suppose were just doing their job. But don't touch the water for any reason. Do visit the Trails Cafe.
Nice Trail up to Griffith Observatory
Easy trail for toddler. Jogging stroller only. All dogs were on leash so it's safe for the littles. Plenty of areas for little ones to explore safely off the trail. Recently there is also lots of mud puddles but still a great little walk.
The Ferndell trail is nice, easy, and peaceful. It's a tiny walk path with trees and tiny ponds. There is a parking lot nearby that is free and there is street parking. The trail is well maintained and it's a good warm-up before tackling the other trails. There isn't much to see in the trail except for trees, bushes, and ponds. It's flat with no inclines so it's a good walking path.
The beginning of this trail when you're near water and passing under the bridge, smells gross.
After passing this area, you are in the clear and is a super easy hike up to the Observatory if that's where you're headed.
But I recommend to just pass the first portion of the "hike" and start where the dirt path begins on the right side of the Fern Dell St.
A clean place to for a short walk. Go early to enjoy the birds singing. Few fish and a few turtles come out to get some fresh air and take a sun bath. Not a full stream of water as many years ago.
I used to bring my kids here when they were little munchkins.
I now bring my grandbaby here and she loves it as much as her dad and aunts and uncle did.
it's a WONDERFUL family tradition to start and continue with through the generations.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it!!!!
10's across the board!!!!
Well-maintained fire road sized trail up to Griffith Observatory. Even just after some rain, the trail is reasonably firm and not too rough. There are some runoff channels, but they weren't too deep (maybe 3 inches deep and 4-6 wide) and did not make it more difficult to chart a course over the trail. Some really nice views from closer to the top. Bring some water; it's mostly exposed the entire way. This does NOT take you to the observatory parking by the Greek Theater unless you take the boy scout trail at the first lookout; otherwise, you end up a mile or so west of there.
Cozy nook next to the trails and Trails Cafe off Ferndell at Griffith Park south side. Lush plants and a stream and mini waterfall make it soothing and quaint.
Great spot for a short quick walk, reading or chilling with a friend.
Great place to hike all the way up to the hollywood sign and is close to the city There's people walking their dogs, people celebrating parties, on hot summer days a lot of people doing pick nicks on the grass. There's an area for bbq. Not hard to find free parking, but only from sunrise to sunset.your vehicle will be towed away if parked overnight. Peaceful place to rest and sleep on hot days.
Love hiking I these trails! Specially the batman cave!
So cute. Wonderful oasis off of Los Feliz Blvd. Nice and shady, many places to lounge. Lots of green. We need more green spaces in LA. Time to tear out some ugly empty buildings and start healing the city! We need more trees.
Enjoyable, shaded stroll, manageanle even with baby in carrier. Parking spots are few relative to the crowd, so grab the earliest spot you see upon turning into Ferndell Dr— its an easy walk in. There are restrooms at the Trail Cafe but you need to get keys from the counter; or there is another public restroom past it, next to the playgrounds near where the trail starts to lead up to Griffith Observatory and shade gets scarce.
Very short trail within Griffith. Slight uphill (not bad). I kept referring to it as Ferngully :-) The greenery gives a nice relief from the heat. At the end of the trail, you can join the other trails and hike up to the Observatory (that hill!!!). If you go from Fern Dell to the Observatory it is about 4 miles round-trip (all down hill coming back!) Outside of Fern Dell there is little shade to hike up on this particular trail. Also lots of space to picnic at the bottom of the trail.
This place was made for Sunday afternoons! Family friendly, cross cultural and the parking is too crazy.
Beware of the local coyotes! They stay in groups of 2-4 and become more aggressive at dusk. If you have a small dog with you on a leash coyotes will still approach!
The snack bar is just that - a snack bar. Being your own lunch😆
Beautiful trail, great place to walk and exercise anytime if the day. You'll get a feeling of relaxation your time here.
Nice easy trail. Needs the leaf debri cleaned out of the tide pools. Very pleasent walk from South end of trail to The Trails restaraunt. Parking is the toughest part of the day when visiting the Fern Dell. Otherwise, it makes for a great afternoon walk and small lunch at The Trails.
Great place to get outdoors, a part of the largest largest metropolitan parks -- Griffith. Gets crowded on the weekend. Don't forget to keep your eyes out for turtles and other critters!
We parked along Fern Dell Dr and started our hike on the north part of Fern Dell Nature Trail which leads to the Observatory Trail. After doing the Observatory Loop, which is a nice wide trail, we were heading to our cars and choose to continue exploring the Fern Dell path. It was such a shady delightfully refreshing wonder! Completely transported to another world! It's a lingering path for everyone with many places to sit and just be present, meditate, take deep breaths, watch people go by with children and/ or pets. We found an open bench to complete our conversation just below a path to a gate that lead us back up to Fern Dell Drive where we parked. Excited to go back and share the space with friends. I love finding little gems like this at GP and overall in Los Angeles.
I love this trail. it's great for hikers of all skill levels and ages. If you go in the morning or late afternoon there is a decent amount of shade all the way up to the observatory.
Different but kinda run down. Not sure who is maintaining but this place has great potential. I didn't think anything could live in the swampy water but my wife and I saw a small family of goldfish and it surprised the hell out of us
Great walking path that leads into Griffith Park. Relatively quiet despite occasional crowds and the surrounding street traffic through the park. Parking can be found easily in lots inside the park, or on the street as you enter. Busy times make parking scarce though, so be advised.
Great place for jogging.
Beautiful path passing parks along the way. Doesn't take longer than 35 mins to get to top. Some parts steep.
Nice hiking trail.
Great place to go meet Buddies
Great trail. Well maintained. Very sandy but not difficult to walk up. There are no chains/boundaries so you do need to be careful near the edge. There are also rattlesnakes around
Beautiful jungle feel trail. Quiet with benches along the way. My kids love to stop and watch/count the turtles. A must do if you're headed on a hike up to the observatory.
Love that trail :)
Even my 6 years old boy enjoyed it!
The best hidden trail in Griffith Park
Huell Howser brought me here. Always a nice place to take a quick stroll through before dinner or a trip up to the observatory. Very pretty in the late afternoon! Parking is fairly easily to find on the street.
Great trail. Very wide, which is convenient for groups and it doesn't feel so crowded even though there are many people on it going in both directions. Spectacular views of LA!
Beautiful, peacefull, very romántic
Look for the crayfish in any part of the little creek. They're everywhere in there. Of course, there seem to be lots of mosquitoes too, so be aware if you're particularly sensitive.
Took trail up to observatory..Trail was challenging for a 74 yr old,but a beautiful view and well worth the effort..My future plans are to do the trail 1 to 2 x a week to get in shape..
Ive been going to Fern Dell for over 45 years since I was a kid. Its a fantastic oasis but the brook could use a little refurbishing. It really hasn't changed a bit since the 1970's which might be a good thing. Sometimes you can spot a crawfish poking around. I brought one home in 1974 and tried to keep it in my fish tank. Don't litter there's plenty of trash cans for you.
Cool trail shaded area pond n stream with turtles n crawfish kids like watching them.
Favorite trail leading to observatory
Despite these COVID times, it is still nice to walk through Fern Dell but I do miss seeing a stream of flowing water from some areas within it. All in all, it is still good to have a simple nature walk through Fern Dell.
Cool park area with lots of grassy hang spots and fun little pedestrian bridges zipping over and under things. You'll likely have to park well north of Los Feliz if you look for parking on Fern Dell.
If this place was a bit more taken care of it would be a wonderful little walk but there's some places where since there's no water running through the "river" it just smells really gross and takes you out of that nature feel.
Every part of Griffith Park is magical. This section is extra magical. Great place to meditate!
Fern Dell trail is awesome. The trail is heavily braided (it splits and reforms) letting you kinda choose a path without getting lost, so it's never the same each time. It dives down into a creek bed with fun wooden bridges and shade.
It was so beautiful and amazing and I got to experience it with a special person in my life. Great experience
saw a coyote fight a glizzy gobbler! be careful. also I was here taking my once a week 3 am walk and saw a dog running on its hind legs so yea..
Great views and fairly easy to access depending time of day. Fairly good workout too.
So beautiful. A lovely little trail that leads into Griffith Park where you can take a hike up to the Griffith Observatory
Very relaxing place to be on Saturday morning or sunday
Beautiful place. Creek/stream flowing through. Pretty ferns and many other plants and trees compliment the area. Must see.
I went here to exercise. Please stay watered up ya'll. Bring water and don't go too far if you can't make it back. If you feel yourself getting tired take a break and think about heading back. Stay safe and drink lots of water.
It was a beautiful trail to hike for the first time. Was with a bunch of male friends, some of whom are experienced hikers. Definitely will be back!
Very nice place to walk through, so far so good. Fun seeing the little animals too, apparently some people take some from the water :(
Always a great place to hike. Don't be a fox & coyote stalker like me. Keep your small dogs on a leash & close. Wild life does bite.
Beautiful place to start your day. Short and sweet. You can keep going and make it to Observatory to make more rigorous.
Crowded like most LA parks, but really nice to walk and take your dogs. Park on Fern Dell. It's easier to get back into Los Feliz from the light there.
Easy walk to spend a little time outdoors
This trail is short and I have done it with my kids many times. The turtles are fun to see in the stream. Beautifully hidden in the city.
This trail is amazing and super enjoyable, social distancing and masks were upheld and it wasn't too populated. Lots of fun with our family!
Great way to excersise, don't be fooled it was a pretty tough hike up to Griffith Absorbatory but worth it, great views, nice cafeteria (pricey), lots of fun! Give yourself time to enjoy.
Good workout walking up the steep hill to the observatory. Pretty dusty/dirty and could be a little slippery due to the surface. Pretty cool views of the city from above.
Great place for hiking. Sometimes parking is difficult, depending on the time of day.
Water level is low but still a nice get away walk
Great trail , easy to moderate. Parking can be difficult at times. If you turn onto Ferdell, drive towards end where there will be two larger lots.
Amazing. People genuinely come to relax and take a stroll. There are blue dragon flies and crawfish and what not. Do yourself a favor and check this place out. Not to shabby a place to canoodle either. Lol
Best Trail of the Universe. Running , Walking , Sightseeing, Snake Lookers , Bird Flickers , Horse Ridding ... There is nothing more you need to see in this beautiful mountain side dry turf . Enjoy Your Staying ...
I like it there! Very short trail but really relaxing! I also hiked up to the Griffin Observatory... I would come again!
FernDell is one of LAs hidden egg hunts. Dr.Hove has been hiding eggs here for years and some of them even have teeth. If you're lucky enough to get there early you might catch the doctor laying his eggs. He's very light sensitive though so if you want to catch him use super bright flashlights. That way he'll cover his eyes and then you can bag him. We stole him once during Xmas and got him to lay eggs in our trailer. He eats his own eggs so you dont have to fred him much other than sausage. Hes a good kisser too!
What a great ramble. Truly a little gem hidden away in in what we already know as a great destination, Griffith Park. Go to Fern Dell, bring your guitar.
fern dell nature trail is a place for the whole family. there is a playground for kids to play, a place to gather with family, a place to hike up the hill to the observatory, due to covid the observatory is closed but the lawn is open for the public, there is a cafe right across the playground before heading up the hill, called Trail Cafe, and plenty of seating throughout the park.
It was so nice getting away from the city for a couple of hours.
We set up a quick bbq with my family and loved our time under the trees!
Very good experience only need more forest service
Nothing Special. But it's a great place to go with your Kids And unwind...
Beautiful place yo walk 🥰😘 …
Beautiful peaceful walk
It’s a nice entrance leading to the main park. Hopefully this will be developed more someday. Nature🤗 …
Nice trail but it was hot that day!
Nice shaded walking area. I can imagine it being really nice with more water. People are respectfully masked. Great walk to bring fido.
Great hike with beautiful views
September 3rd, 2020, strangely aggressive maintenance lady plus a restroom with no privacy made this a very weird place to be, nun but rocks n dirt on the trail overall 6/10 probably wouldn't recommend
My only pet peeve is that the beautiful little river is sooo dried up.I think it'd be a Gorgeous place if the little river was allowed to flow.I wonder how that happened and if there is something that could be done about it.
What a great trail. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it.
Pretty little nature trail. We enjoyed stopping to look at the koi fish and the turtles in the water.
…favorite trail of all time.
Lovely park under the Hollywood sign with shaded trails along a stream that leads up to the observatory.
Perfect little nature walk for young kids; my toddler loved looking at all the animals.
A walk in Fern Dell will make you forget you live in busy Hollywood. Go there to excersize by way of a hike, to decompress, or with friends. Also stop by " The Woods " coffee shack for a delicious lemon cookie, and a dirty chai. Tons of vegan options, and even a treat for your furbaby.
Very peaceful and fun .no signal for your phone .means the kids will put there tablets down...the outdoors 😊 …
If you love the experience of good outdoor spots for exercising hiking and fun. Well this is a good spot for all of the above.
So relaxing. Hidden treasure. You will definitely enjoy the peace.
Great hike up to the observatory. A bit of an incline towards the end but has some fantastic views.
Excellent fresh air. My daughter enjoyed looking at the crawfish and taking pictures of them! :
Its an immense outdoors facility with trails, fields and plenty of other activities for all ages and walks of life...
It’s definitely a busy area but a nice place to visit. The kids loved it.
Nice trail where you can bring your little ones and stop at the playground. If you are up for it the trail continues up to the Griffith Observatory.
Enjoyable, If your looking for a nice relaxing walk I recommend it. Walking from Ferndell to the observatory was fun.
So beautiful and green.
The sounds of the stream gurgle and take your mind far out of the city. I love it there.
It
Been coming to this little park now for over 20 years every time I come it gets better and better elephant ear ferns exotic plants and so forth can be found at this park!
This trail makes you feel like you're in a jungle. I love that it also leads up to the Observatory hiking trails. :)
Small walk. Perfect for kids, it is pretty shaded but once sunset hit you'll probably need a flashlight.
Great place to walk or relax under big trees and streams with turtles
Best park ever I always go here to exercise and smoke with friends.
It is an amazing place! Very peaceful trail. Full of greenery all around.
So cute! And no matter what trail you end up on if you decide to go past the Ferndell one, you’re bound to have a good time. 😊 …
Lovely place.
Beautiful not as hot and alot of shane and you will enjoy walking through the trail very clean and very peaceful
Nice and great for people with disabilities no incline in path while near the stream, small distance walking and ADA parking that is right near the entrance (10 steps aprox.)
very beautiful place, only a lot of dirt, you need to put things in order.
Great little inner city, man made nature trail.
It's the perfect place for a cool walk when the sun is bright and hot.
A Wonderful place to walk...really nice for everyone in the family...!!!
A very relaxing trail, with a stream, turtles and koi fish!

Super cute easy hike lots of shade which is nice on a hot day
Nice trail for the family. Go up a little more and get to "Trails Cafe"
Great place to kick back do you want some shade at the foot of the Hill from The Observatory
Oasis in the middle of LA.. Nice walking trail, dog friendly leads to the Observatory.
Great walk for the 2 to 3 year old. We just started walking when we realized that it was the end
Love this trail, if you want to get a workout run! Perfect for mindfulness.

Beautiful outdoor place for picnics or just a quick place to rest.
Beautiful hike with really nice views.
Mostly quiet, shaded nature trail with ponds fed by a natural spring.
Didn't realize this place existed. Seems like an ideal setting for any activity.
Shadiest urban walk in town. Small bridges, waterfalls, rocks and plant life.
Level of difficulty: EASY. A popular hike trail going to the observatory with a good view.
Most enjoyable always on a real hot day for its shade and exotic plantations and creek
