Reviews of Hoosier National Forest
It's an absolutely gorgeous place to go for a hike, see wildlife, go kayaking or fishing if it suits you. I will recommend packing extra water if you intend to hike as it can be more of a task than you'd initially expect but the hike is one of the most scenic in the entire state and worth the trek.
Awesome time backpacking this trail. The peninsula trail. A great 10 miles. Beautiful scenery and I'm sure the fall leaves are amazing
Great forest with nicely set up dispersed sites and plenty of country roads to drive on.
My oldest son and I walked a little way into the woods. It was slightly drizzling, and I loved hearing the droplets fall upon the trees.
Backpacking in the Charles C Deam Wilderness, which is part of the Hoosier National Forest, is a great experience. I enjoyed over 20 miles of the trail system and loved camping directly on the shores of Lake Monroe. What an awesome experience. The trails are rated as moderate and easily done by someone in fair shape. Beautiful area.
I live here in the Hoosier National Forrest and hike very often on the trails. I think that it's a beautiful treasure and pretty much undiscovered by the public. I had the pleasure of seeing a mommy Black bear and cub while hiking the Morgan ridge west trail on the morning of 04/10/20. What an honor! I'll never forget that experience.
According to the Indiana DNR mammalogy department, this would be evidence of the first mating pair of black bears seen in Indiana since 1873.
Because Nature. However on this trip we had rude neighbours that refused to honor quiet time.
Even after my husband asked them to please turn off the music at 11:30. So if you have this issue call the local sheriff department. I came very close last night and wish I has done so at 1:15am when turned into a loud argument.
Here is all the camping spots that's along the trail
It's beautiful and I had A-blast
It's a wonderful magical Forest that should be preserved for future generations. It is filled with many secluded spots that few forests have left anymore. It's a treasure that needs to stay around for our children. The Buffalo springs project needs revamped to ensure it is preserved, not cut down and burned. It should be made into a National Historic Trail the Buffalo Trace Heritage Corridor Trail! Tell the Forest Service and your senators.
Beautiful, quite & relaxing. Nice to find this close to home.
They have lots of beautiful trees. Rambling rivers and chipmunks everywhere. Leave your couch drive here and walk into the woods. Nature will tell you what to do from there.
Great camping.
Hobo dinners over an open fire.
Back to HNF for a fall break.
Perfect!
An amazing place! Some of the best trails and scenery across Indiana. Went to 3 different sections of the trails and all were worth my time. Well maintained and marked
Went to Hemlock Cliffs in Hoosier National Forest. Beautiful trails among cliffs and caves. It is like going back in the past and image settlers exploring and finding places to settle. Water falls with cold water and rock cliffs for shelter.
I love Allen's Creek ridge!! There is a very nice trail off of the parking lot that leads to a couple places, my favorite way takes you off the trail a little bit just over a hill the leads to the water were a bunch of Indian beads are!!!
Wide open, we dispersed camped a weekend. Relaxing! Check for ticks!!
Great forest - well maintained, major updates are rare, keeping it very wild, hike the Grub Ridged Trail, it's only 4 miles to the lake!
Had a pleasant stay, nice lake and good hiking trails, would visit again
Free dispersed camping. Decent horse/bike/hiking trails. Great place to get away for a weekend
Beautiful area with lots of bike trails, hiking trails, and water. The beach was nice and clean overall very impressed. Campground was great, easy in easy out, bathrooms very clean, campground overall very enjoyable.
I love this spot. My first trip here was when I was 5, I just took my 5 year old here. Great spot for day hiking and/or camping
My home is in the Hoosier National Forest. I've lived here for 13 years. It's beautiful, private, and there's plenty recreation for the entire family. At least what we enjoy!
Beautiful, quiet and peaceful. An absolutely stunning place to visit.
Great place for hiking, backpacking, and horse back riding. Several trails, some marked better than others, some cleaned up better than others. However, it’s hiking in Indiana and some of the best terrain. In the summer it really doesn’t have any scenery because the woods are VERY dense. This also makes it extremely hot and humid in summer since there is no breeze either. Keep that in mind if you are planning a trip. Don’t expect the trails, roads, bathrooms, and views to be that of a state park, but it also doesn’t have the traffic of state parks either. At times you can feel like the only person in the woods when hiking!
We hiked 14 miles in one afternoon and besides the miserable heat of August had a great time. Brought a filter and was able to find a few water sources to keep hydrated. We definitely plan to be back when the weather is a little more agreeable.
Image is one of the neat campsites we found while hiking.
The service roads for dispersed camping are in pretty good shape , people leaving trash and fires burning should be more respectful of nature and not treat the forest like the place they live or just stay away . It would be nice to have some dispersed camping areas with lake access.
Beautiful place. The DNR officer was was very pleasant and understanding when he told us we can't camp at the lake. The people of southern Indiana are noticeably more friendly than in the north.
We drive down to Patoka Lake to ride the jet ski's because the water here seems to be much cleaner. A really nice lake.
Backpacked for 8 miles on Hickory Ridge Trail. Camped two nights met some sweet people at the Hickory Church. Brother & Me had a blessed time!
Hiked the Indian/Celina Lake Loop Trail over two days, though it could have been done in one long day of hiking! Many excellent camping spots along the South side of the loop. Fewer on the North section, which is where we found ourselves in the afternoon. Still had a wonderful time and highly recommend this criminally under-utilized park!
Very nice trails and lake with boat ramp troller motor only. And also nice camp sites
Great place to visit. Fishing was great, the place was very clean. This is a place of beauty.
Best camping I've ever experienced
Great place to visit. Just don't get turned around, car or on foot. You could get lost easily.
Big open land with a lot of space to walk through the woods.
Beautiful amazing place besides the beheaded discarded squirrels in the waterways
I've been going to this Forrest for 25 years. Very quiet, great fishing (from a small boat), nice camp sites, and a great hiking trail
Now waking up at home and looking over to the Hoosier national forest how lucky I a girl am I?
Backpacked the Twin Lakes loop trail. The trail is nice and brings you through several different types of terrain. Bring your bug spray and pants, there are quite a few ticks here.
We worked our way south to north. We enjoyed the peaceful roads, birded the local hot spots and can't wait to go back in Spring. Photos of Perry county.
It's my home, I love this area of Indiana it's beautiful I've been here all my life and don't plan on leaving ❤🌲🌷🌻🌾🌳🍃🍁🍂🌼🌻 …
Great place to camp, fish and play on the water!
Nice place to camp. We were the ONLY ones there, so that was a bonus! Warm water on the lake. Pit potties had about 200 flies and 250 mosquitoes (yes, I counted) and couldn't lock the door.... But again, we were the only ones. Didn't do any fishing, but there was a fish cleaning station as well.
We went to Hemlock Cliffs and it was so beautiful, worth the trip!
Relaxing, no entrance fee for Charles c Deam wilderness. Great way to escape in Indiana.
Great place to spend some time and enjoy nature.
Great National Forest with some amazing trails and some good hunting grounds too!
Went for a small hike at Mifflin Cliffs. We seen 2 waterfalls, 1 small and the other had 2 small falls. Very nice and relaxing. Planning on returning with grandkids, 7, 4, 2 yrs old. It will be perfect.
Went to Charles Deem Wilderness area to do some hiking. Had a great time.
I love the Hoosier National Forest. It is right in Indiana. It is beautiful in the fall. The climb to the top of the watchtower to view the fall foliage is a must. 111 feet tall.
If you like the outdoors the woods specifically it's the only place in Indiana really to go and spend some time you camp in Brown County State Park and then you go visit the forest as a day trip
Enjoyed a great weekend camping. Beautiful trails and lakes. Plenty of parking. Can tent camp or use a camper. Has shelter houses that can be rented for parties, reunions ect. Some areas of the forestry have trails for horseback riding and bicycle riding.
The Wilderness was fun to hike in, and offered a great first backpacking experience. Trails do get pretty muddy in the spring as a result of the rain and horse traffic.
Beautiful area if you ever have the chance to go. Have a family reunion nearby every few years and it is always great.
This place was absolutely amazing. The ladies who work the check in booth were super friendly and informative. Everything was absolutely clean. My husband and I walked the trail around Lake Celina and the the trail that cuts between both lakes and it was stunning. Their campsites and wonderful and set up nicely. The bathrooms were nice and clean. We absolutely will be coming back. I highly recommend.
Great place for hiking, with hills, caves, water streams, beach, and unlimited fun. We visited the park office before start picking where to go, and they were very helpful.
Awesome area! So peaceful and relaxing.
Nice horse trails, but you will need special Horse Bridial tags to ride the park.
Love the peaceful waters and great atmosphere here while kayaking.
We go to saddle lake campground at least once a year and love it everytime.
Beautiful wooded area. This place covers a lot of ground. Was helping a buddy work on a house that his property backed up to the forest. Said he sees deer, Turkey, and bobcats all the time. Occasionally a coyote too.
Fishing at Patoka Lake or just driving around, the Hoosier National Forest is a great escape. Next time, camping!
I'm disappointed we were there for the end on Memorial day and the horse camp is being taken over by boaters and campers alike.. Saw one other horse trailer there we had to wait on campers to leave so we could get a horse pen for our horses. Did see some improvement on the trail that might have been added last year
Great place to get away and ride some gravel roads
This place is beautiful. But people keep leaving a bunch of thrash
There are lots of pull offs you can camp in. The horse trails near the horse camps are pretty well tilled up from horse traffic. When it is wet, they're a muddy mess. Trail 18 and 19 have less horse traffic so are in better shape. Nebo ridge is in excellent shape.
Huge hardwood forest with great trails of all ability levels. Clean rest areas and picnic shelters. Just great
Love my 2nd home. It's magical and beautiful
Patoka lake is beautiful. The campgrounds and picnic areas here were very nice.
Beautiful. I hope it always stays a national forest.
Hoosier NF has designated campgrounds (e.g. Hardin Ridge) but no designated dispersed camping areas. Yet lots of dispersed sites exist in the wilder sections. I won't say where because they are already too busy for my liking.
Great place ,to go swimming at chipsaw park near Leopold Indiana. They also have camping and hiking and fishing.
It was a nice day to hunt. The Deer just weren't moving.
Great camping spots!
Hoosier National Forest is beautiful, a great place to hike. Everyone is very friendly. Nature at best!!!
Beautiful scenery!
Great camping with family at Patoka Lake Fisherman's Camp Ground
Nice campground and places to hike lakes are small
Had a great time burning the tread off my Sport Cup Twos!!
Had great time camping and renting a pontoon boat for the family at Lake Monroe
Best wilderness area in south central indiana. Lots of good hiking, mountain biking, and dispersed camping. Could be more OHV access.
Went to the back of Hemlock Cliffs and it never disappoints! Epic.
We had a fantastic time in the forest.... The 5 mile hike in and 5 mile hike out was long for my 4 and 2 year old but we knew that coming in.... We loved taking a dip in the lake once we got there.... Great time but plan on taking the cannoe in next time to see more than the little peninsula we were on!!!
Very nice, quiet state park. Gods hiking trails and fishing pond. It’s $7 per Indiana resident per car, which is a little expensive for a couple hours fishing. Indiana state parks don’t offer military or veteran discounts and I think that would be a nice improvement. All in all, I’ll continue to use the park despite the price because it has nice amenities.
Hoosier forest is a great place to go on a walk. There is beauty surrounding you on all sides.
The showers were push button and only gave you about 1 minute or less per push. They did have some good spots for tents and the campground was very clean.
So peaceful and full of nature! For some reason this forest does NOT have the Asian tiger mosquitoes that leave giant welts.. just the standard Indiana ones that are a pleasure compared to the invasive ones in the city!
Tipsaw Recreation Area located in the Hoosier National Forest. Nice beach and camping area. Wooded sites
Beautiful trail and scenery.
Hands down my favorite place to go in Indiana. It's a short drive from Indianapolis, so we go here often to backpack! The peninsula trail is definitely one of the best hikes there, but I have had a great time every time I have been here. Absolutely beautiful!
Great trails had a lot of family fun
We are hosts at Tipsaw Recreation.Area. it is beautiful here!
Amazing trails, beautiful nature
This forest is amazing. Lots to see and discover.
Never disappoints.
Absolutely Beautiful the Fall Colors are Breath Taking!!!
Very nice dispersed camping. It was quite a few people in late September but it was gorgeous weekend weather.
Staff is so kind and warm. My family and I have been going here multiple times every year for as long as I can remember. Bathrooms and washrooms are kept very clean compared to others and the hiking trails are excellent. They range from short one hour trails all the way up to multiple days. I highly recommend this place.
We hiked the Hemlock Cliff trail and it is a beautiful place to hike.
Camping on the water is great, fun for the whole family
This is a beautiful National Forest. While the terrain is very hilly, they have well thought out leveled sites. Some are paved. We camped in the off season so there was no water, electric or dump available. But it was also free. Very private sites, separate, and many trees in between sites. We do wish the dump station would have been open, and given it 5 stars. Our camper is 27 ft., so we didn't have a problem finding a spot. Someone with large motor Home may have difficulty . Hiking trails were well maintained and easy to follow. Did I say beautiful country!! We will be coming back.
What an amazing resource just about an hour away from Indianapolis or Louisville. Easily accessible from trail or lake. We went in by canoe for a week and had a blast. Beautiful scenery. Had some great paddles and some really good day hikes. Make sure you take water because the summer had been so dry. The deeper you get the less and less trash you see. But some of the campsites close to the boat launch had a lot of trash.
Wonderful-even for those that night not be sold on camping. They offer running water and electricity for a small fee. The boat docks are well facilitated and the beaches are a great place to spend the day. Lake has plenty of fish. Never had a bad experience.
My wife and I love taking our children to do things outdoors. Getting back to the basics, camping, cooking on an open fire, fishing, etc. We really enjoy visiting all the state parks and such as we feel a lot safer while camping. Just an enjoyable experience overall.
Bring a boat, bank fishing is nearly impossible. Beautiful area. Not too crowded, bring good bug spray with you. Ticks are plentiful! Keep tents zipped at all times. Overall awesome campgrounds, had a blast.
Beautiful forest. We didn't get to see it all due to time constraints but of the 13 miles we hiked, we would have enjoyed it more without the horse trails. Every horse trail was utterly destroyed and some paths only for hikers were also destroyed by people taking their horses there since they couldn't make it through the actual horse trails. It needs some attention but other than that muddy issue, I can't wait to go back.
I can move in there and never leave. It is so beautiful and I love the surroundings. There's so many woods pretty creeks pretty rocks all the sounds of the frogs and the crickets at night. Everything about it is just wonderful. It's my absolute favorite place to go.
Just the right amount of trees. Plus, they all grew vertical.
Hilly country that is not suitable for farming has been left for Mother Nature to restore; and She's doing what she does best.
Just a beautiful area. I love this National Forest. It has tons of wildlife. Pretty good fishing spot. Awesome hiking trails above all else. If you would like a peaceful hike, this is definitely the place. This is nature at it's finest. I would highly recommend taking the family here for a fun and relaxing filled day. If you want a place to hike this Summer, this is definitely the place. You can't go wrong coming here.
This property is so gorgeous!! My friend and I hiked 6 miles and camped out, next time we intend to bring kayaks or a canoe and getting out here that way with my 3 year old. This place is GREAT for outdoor family fun/adventures!
This is a great park! If you love boats, this is the place to go! They have a beautiful lake here. We had a farwell party for my son, who was going into the army here. It was the perfect place. Shelter house Marina #1 has a beautiful view of the lake.
A very clean and nice state park, we love to camp there, the pool is great for kids. Thr nature center is always well staffed and love the pioneer village. I have been on the horse trails they are nice trails a bit rockie.
We love dispersed camping here!!
The trails are well kept. It’s always a fun time visiting this hidden gem!
It's a nice walk ,good fishing.
Lovely forest I hike here all the time
Lots of natural areas. Campsites have lots of privacy from other campers. Reasonably priced. There are hiking trails and you can camp on the trails for $5 per night. There is also a fishing. Seniors with senior pass save $10 per night on camping fees
Very quiet park. Dogs are allowed.
Nice swimming pool with great slides. The entrance fee of $5 per person is a little too high for a State Park. For a family of 4 it would cost $20 just for a few hours of swim. No shades!
Everything there is amazing
This really isn't a place as much as it is an area. There are a lot of places her to enjoy. State parks are all around here. There are also a couple large reservoirs with boating and fishing activities. You can find several large caves in the area with guided tours. There are also rivers offering places for kayaking and canoeing. Several cabin rental places can also be found here.
The site was wonderful, although with no improvements at all, but there are no signs indicating campsite locations, and the demarcations between the public and private areas are not clear. But the fish were jumping all day and all night, and birds roamed the shoreline, so it's hard to complain.
If you have to get your mind right Hoosier National Forest is where that will happen. It's beautiful peaceful it's got a way of giving you a feeling of contentment, you start thinking of living in a log cabin among the squirrels, chipmunks, deer and all varieties of wildlife. I live here in Crawford county, I'm blessed.
I love this forest. It is a beautiful place. They use a forestry management program that is different from most. They have stands of different kinds of trees that they planted separated. Like in this area there may be 500 walnut trees and over there will be maybe 500 oak trees. The ones I like most is the sturdy Black Walnut trees.
From.
Indiana State Road 46
South through the Ohio river.
Hoosier National forest.
It's a Big places, to enjoy
It's a real forest, though mostly not old growth. Trails!
Trees, hills & woods were beautiful! You can climb the fire watch tower on top of Sky Line Drive. Shelter house is nice - think you must rent in advance.
If you love the outdoors you'll really love this place. The park is nice and the lake is fantastic. The area is very clean safe and secure. Lots of different Wildlife to look at and lots of great things to see.
There are so many beautiful recreational areas in Hoosier National Forest!
Please be respectful of the land and other people you meet. And PLEASE DON'T LITTER!!! It only hurts the local ecosystem and wildlife, makes employee's jobs harder, and lessons the experience for everyone.
This is such a nice place for hiking and enjoying the outdoors. We had such a fun day and plan to return with the family. This is a very pretty part of the country to see especially when the leaves are changing. The weather is nice year round and this is a fun place to explore.
I wanted to share my experience at Tipsaw Lake because it was very enjoyable for my family.
Typically, I dread campground/state park restrooms but the restrooms near the beach were clean and well stocked. You could tell the beach sand was raked often and the grass was well kept. The swimming area was roped off at just the right distance for most ages to ensure a safe experience.
I will note the only problem with the beach area was the lack of trash cans.
Thank you to the staff, funding from tax payers and donors who maintain this park!
We are so lucky to live close to Hoosier National Forest. The trails are beautiful, well marked, and well maintained. There is an variety of length and ruggedness. A wonderful place to forget about your stresses and cares for awhile.
Spent a weekend backpacking in Deam Wilderness and was impressed how well kept the trails were. Facilities at base camp were also very well maintained.
This review is based on tent camping at site 47 in Hardin Ridge Recreation Area in Heltonville, IN in the Hoosier National Forest overnight on October 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th of 2019.
WOW WOW WOW! This was the best campground/campsite we've ever had. Site 47 is located on the Southern Point loop and it is designed for tent campers with no electric or water at each campsite, but there are water spigots nearby and electricity in the nearby bathhouse with flush toilets and hot showers. There is a picnic table, lantern pole, tent pad and in the ground fire rings with a nice grill attached at each site. The campsites are nicely spaced apart on a beautiful ridge. Most campsites have a nice gravel spot for your vehicle and the a few wooden steps down lead you to your fire ring, picnic table and tent pad. This was very nice bc your site is even further down off the road. There were zero bugs, tons of potential firewood and temps were 70s for highs and 50s for lows. There are hiking trails that lead down to Lake Monroe, one with a beach, swimming, fishing and boating opportunities. We'll definitely be back and hopefully will get site 47 again!! ⛺♨❤⛺♨❤⛺
Hoosier National Forest is an excellent Forest. You are allowed to hunt deer in there. They allow hunting of squirrel in there. You can get Rabbit out of Hoosier National Forest in rabbit season. It is a great place to go turkey hunting. It's also a good place just to go hiking or camping. Hoosier National Forest is a real large forest in the southern central part of Indiana. I haven't been all over the forest but everywhere I've been it's been beautiful.
Voices are needed to help keep the small amount of free land we have left free. They have plans to upset this place by cutting down half the trees and micro-managing what is left. They also plan on herbicides for a lot of the forest, allowing them to flow into the rivers which are drinking water for many. If you would like to help, there is a Facebook group formed called "Save the Hoosier National Forest". 💚🙌🏕
Great hiking and mother nature at her best
It was great plenty of camp spots
Camping is awesome here, but October is sweet. People decorate their campsites, their animals, then they shut the park down at 6:00 so all the children can go around to the campsites for candy
We stayed in the state forest on Patoka lake. This is a beautiful and large camping area. Since the modern campground was full, we stayed in the primative campground and loved it. You can't go wrong with this place given the beauty and bounty of things to do.
Beautiful hiking and wonderful staff
Great camping. Isolated from other sites. Has double camper sites as well. Great if camping with another family. Hosts were a little snippy with getting out at 12 for end of year. Said was going to lock you in, which we all knew was false. Love camping but hosts attitude at Tipsaw needs a little improvement.
The charles c deam trails are a great place to hike and camp, awesome trails with plenty of open and secluded spots with plenty of room for three to five tents. Also easy to find water being close to the lake. Overall a great experience and a lot of fun to be able to get out in the wild. Beautiful place
A great place to visit to escape the city
Our campsite was across from the lake. A beautiful place. Clean restrooms. Clean showers. Loved the spot we were in. Ground was flat. So we weren't sleeping down hill. lol. Can't wait for this summer.
I had no idea Indiana had such beautiful natural resources, tall pine trees, valleys and small canons along winding trails. No TV, No Radio, no Cell Service, No Internet. It seemed like we had the forest all to our selves, quiet and surreal.
Best state park. They have different areas for camping, boating, beach with shower/bathrooms snack bar, covered picnic areas, marina, archery range, disc-golf, paved bike trails, gravel hiking paths, see eagle at visitor center and much more (Patoka Lake) rent boats, ski-do, pontoon boats. Rent floating cabins
Great place for a hike.
This is my family's favorite area to camp. We go to Patoka Lake here. Of all the areas we have camped, this one offered an experience truly unique. This area offers back country camping, which is hard to find anywhere. The staff is always helpful with offering directions and making conversation about the area.
Nice dispersed camping spots
We practically live here in the summer. It's very serene, DNR is really friendly, we've never once had a bad experience. The is a place called gilligan's where you can rent boats, buy fishing gear etc. They are the most wonderful people. They go over and above, way over and above. You should go, it won't disappoint. Camping is clean and safe, fishing is fun, boating is fun, and the scenery is absolutely wonderful.
Beautiful... Oct 2020 with changing of the leaves
Went to Tipsaw lake. It was very clean and the staff were very helpful. My son and I had a great time. Don't buy firewood until you scope out your site. There may be plenty of wood around.
Love love love! I highly recommend visiting the offshoot roads (they're gravel - go slow) to see stunning fall colors. Don't forget to test your fear of heights on Hickory Ridge Fire Tower!
Is Home to Me , Is a Pretty Area Anytime of the Year !!
Huge area with hiking and lakes and all sorts of outdoor adventures.
The largest forest in Indiana. Known to be one of the best parks's in the state packing in & primitive camping. It has a unique amount of geology with limestone bluffs & caves, untouched beaches, hiking, mountain biking & horse trails that span for miles. South of the Deam Wilderness you can camp just about anywhere with a campfire.
Very beautiful. I love hiking here.
I've only been to the northern part of the Hoosier National Forest (Charles Deam Wilderness), so I can't speak for the rest of it, but it's great! Early spring and early fall are the best times to go: fewer bugs and cooler temperatures. There are some great trails for hiking and I can take my dogs without worrying about a gazillion rules. I've camped out of my backpack and out of my car. There are some primitive campsites along the trails for backpackers. If you go east of the fire tower, there are drive-in campsites that are really nice. No map for the drive-in sites, so you just have to wander a bit on the roads to find them. The drive-in sites afford a good deal of privacy (great to keep my dogs from going nuts!). There are no stores in the forest, but The Fishing Shedd is nearby and you can get any basic stuff (ice, water, etc.) you need there.
There are a couple reasons why I didn't give it five stars. First, it's near Bloomington, so you get college kids having parties. I didn't have any noise problems, but the first few drive-in sites had broken glass on the ground. The farther you drive for a site, the cleaner it will be. Second, most of the trails are open to horses, which means they're basically closed to everyone else. You're allowed to hike all the trails, but the horses make them unenjoyable. The droppings are bad enough, but the low spots on the trail get churned into mud by their hooves. I turned back every time I tried a trail open to horses.
Even with the negatives, I love camping and hiking here. If you're looking for primitive camping and rugged hiking, the HNF is a great place to go!
Loved this beautiful Park. Biating n the lake during July was fantastic. There were however a few children that we're unattended by an adult that were throwing rocks in the water at the dock. At the dick where people were getting in and out boats. It was very disheartening when the children were asked to stop that they had to be told by adults several times before they stopped.
A place to de-stress and live simple for a while.
Woodsie, with facilities throughout. We went to see the trees full of shoes.
Wonderfully kept campground and great hiking.
The Hoosier National Forest is a quick and easy getaway from home that can be easily accessible from any directional city. The HNF has miles upon miles of clearly marked, well maintained trails that range from most beginner trail walkers to the most advance hikers. Great place to do some trail biking, even. Highly recommend for exercise and for the scenery!
We LOVED it here! My dog had plenty of space to run around in the grass ! It was quiet and the people who live across the road were very friendly! (Ticks are bad this year!)
Payola Lake is a great place for four season fun. The lake is large enough to accommodate inboard motor watercraft during the summer. There is no inn, but both on and off property cabins are available for dinner. Local cuisine, mostly sandwiches and pizza are located conveniently close to lake front. Hiking is available year round. Finer dining is also available in nearby French Lick. The staff here keeps the park clean and running well. Always safe for families or just avid outdoorsman.
Beautiful place to ride horses. The trails are well-kept
This is God's country it's beautiful
Wonderful place for night out. They have houses in the middle of jungle that you can get in rent for days of your choice(as soon as available). You should reserve it before with phone.
Hiking, exploration and lots of enjoyment.
We took the Patoka Lake wine cruise through the forest. It was a gorgeous ride, beautiful lake and scenery. We only wish it were a few weeks later so the leaves were turning! We saw a bald eagle perched at the top of a tree near his nest, aa breath-taking sight.
It's beautiful, has amazing trails, it's free, you can camp in the back county or in a nice spot right by your car.
We boondocked here for 2 nights with our RV at the entrance to Youngs Creek horse trail, it was free, nobody else camped here while we were here, and it was ever so peaceful! Oh and dog friendly!
Pate Hollow Trail is one of the best in the area. Easy access right off the road. Well-maintained path. Good views of the lake and nice hilly wooded areas. Very little evidence of civilization at the most distal point from the trailhead.
Very nice, sitting on a stump watching animals. Saw raccoons, deer, opossum, many spring birds. Trickle sounds of nearby stream was memorable.
Always have a great time camping .
Love the area cell coverage is severely lacking. I get it that we should unplug, but I'd like to be able to call or receive calls should the need arise, especially if there was an emergency. We've purchased a cell booster for our RV so hopefully we won't feel vulnerable.
So so cool place to hike, fish and do kayaking. Not crowded at all. Very nice
Amazingly beautiful area with plenty to see, fishing, and some game. I personally use the gun range out there, but not as often due to the DNR being jerks. They'll stop and pull over people for the most random reasons and you had BETTER make sure you signed in. If it wasn't for the joke of DNR out there, it'd be 5 stars, but they are the only bad about the park. Otherwise, simply beautiful.
Beautiful place for the outdoor person
If you love roughing it, this is a great destination. Whether hiking, camping, or just driving through, this place is endless beautiful vistas, with all the variety and wonder that nature can offer.
Spent priceless times hunting squirrels and deer here. Vast considering the city folks keep chipping away at the territory. Beautiful scenery, and I've drank water from some of the underground springs scattered through. Not too mention the Native American headstones I've found. Some caves for splunking as well, but are very dangerous. If you want to hunt some game or just explore. The Hoosier National Forest won't disappoint. My uncles place used to run into the Hoosier National Forest. Miss those Summers for sure.
Camp sites were nice, but it will cost you $20 to camp- $40 if you choose a "double" site. Watch out for ticks and poison ivy, especially when gathering firewood in the woods.
Sometimes, Google makes assumptions that are wrong and then makes any attempt at corrections futile. The picture location provided is about 75 miles off target and is actually at the Lake Monroe Sailing Association which is a USACE/Indiana DNR facility on the NW side of Monroe Reservoir. It is not part of the Hoosier National Forest. Perhaps the geese in the photo are responsible for the error. Unable to move the "pin"! USACE is "US Army Corps of Engineers". . .
It's not only for hiking its for exploring new sites and incredible water falls! But watch out for the steep hills! Hope you enjoy it p.s to all the hunters out there there is a sign that says (NO HUNTING)
Beautiful! We hiked a little and spent some time in a small picnic spot. It was nice and calm and the fall colors looked just perfect!
Can't beat that place has everything even a monster for real Pike State forest has great camping for Deer hunters and fishing for all kinds of fish lot's of hillbillies and very beautiful landscape easy access to all the site's and restaurants and plenty of accomodations for staying at very reasonable prices
The Hoosier is fantastic forest and as an experience dispersed forest camper, I can tell you quite a bit of it - the hilly parts- looks a great deal like the forests here in Appalachia. Something for everyone at this forest. Boating, camping, hiking, OHV riding, equestrian... you name it.
Beautiful scenery, but there is a large creek on one side so if you plan on a hike, you may not be able to get all the way around after a rain.
Patoka lake ...one of my favorite places to camp....daughter has camper..we do tents..camped in rv. sites right after gate..never again....too close together, grass too high, bathrooms dirty, trash on campsite when we got there...too many people crowded in...next time my daughter can do without hookup or come visit us at another site down the road
Never had any complaints til we camped in rv lot..I do love it up there
Awesome Place To Spend Time With God, Reading His Word, Praying, Getting Peace Of Mind/Take Thoughts Captive, Rest & Relaxation. ❤️ Thankful For A Beautiful Place To Rejuvenate, God Bless Those Who Make This Forrest A Place To Get With Our First Love
Great place to see nature
I've been all over the nation in seen several forests in my lifetime is nothing like coming home and then didn't you know Hoosier National Forest. It's all very very good nature experience for the young'uns and the light so I'll give it a 5
Broken glass EVERYWHERE. my husband cut his hand on broken glass by the fire pit. Resulting in stitches. Broken glass along the shoreline, but the Bathrooms were clean. Plenty of places to swim. Pretty private. Would go agian but they need to do something about all the broken glass everywhere
Nice primitive and secluded trails for those who don't like crowds. We love taking the dogs for dips in the lake, too.
Hoosiers boat rental was fantastic, they helped us out with everything and explained everything in detail. We had so much fun!!! Thanks Hoosier boat rental!!!
Beautiful Indiana park for hiking, nice bike trail, lodge and camping. Children's parks could use upgrading.
Love riding my horses here. Make sure you buy your pass for the trails as it supports improvements. Remember...dont litter!! If you hauled it in. Haul it out. There are garbage cans in several places. Dont throw anything on the ground. It's so ignorant. How would you like it if people came to your house and threw garbage all over your lawn?!
Beautiful park great walking, fishing and relaxing. Boats out on the lake. Such peaceful fun filled park
This place never fails to leave me in awe. The Forrest is incredible. I love nature and this is one of those places that will take you far away from everything. GREAT FOR MUSHROOMS, by the way 😉👌 …
I am surrounded by Hoosier National Forestry.
It is done off the prettiest country in the list midwest. The foothills and the beautiful streams with amazing rocks or agates in them. Several lakes to utilize and ample watersports or fishing opportunities to enjoy.
The did the sycamore loop trail. It was very well marked, and very clean. The only thing I didn't like is that there is no restrooms, it would be nice if they had some kind of facility in the parking lot area.
Great place to hike
The area is the most beautiful in the state. A very under used asset in this state. Thats ok though because it keeps it clean and quiet for those of us who do use it. While there take your garbage out with you. If you don't have any pick some up laying on the ground. "Leave it better than you found it!"
The Hoosier National Forest is amazingly beautiful. We saw baby snakes today and it's only March 3rd! The backwaters of lake Monroe are full of wildlife.
Woods and water! Camping was great.
I'd give 3.5 stars. This needs RESTROOMS at regular intervals. Better still, at trailheads if possible! We searched for one but in vain!
Hemlock Trail was awesome!! Patoka Lake was serene and beautiful! Looking forward to come over again with more time.
I love every part of the forest. I will try to visit every park, and trail that I can! Beauty in nature is the best.
As long as people follow leave no trace!!!
DNR gets a little but hurt when you break the rules. Beautiful place though
I've only ever driven through Hoosier national forest but one of these days I really do want to stay there it's a lovely forest and a great view just driving through
I love taking visitors to the forests and hills of Indiana to surprise the people who think all of Indiana is just flat and covered with corn fields. Take a chance to get off the main roads and see this beautiful state.
I hunt deer here. Lots of hills! Trails seem to come to a dead end out of no where tho. I would recommend bringing a compass and checking your cell phone providers coverage map. Service with most all cell company's has spotty service!
This place is huge! And the people are very friendly, so much to do and see for hours and hours on end. There was a place next to a dam, it was a small waterfall and you could drink the spring water that was coming out of it. Very refreshing.
We love this park! It's a beautiful place to take the family! It has something for everyone!
Beautiful National Park that is very well marked with signage and very well maintained. I visited Patoka Lake often and spend my extra time driving thru the forest.
Very beautiful and a piece of mind
Rode bikes threw there earlier today. Very nice
Nature at it's best! This forest is very large, plenty of room to enjoy nature, hunting, and fishing. Be sure to check out Sundance Lake.
Always love going out to Lake Monroe. Boat rental people are very nice. 4 stars just cause I didnt catch anything last time.
Great campsites for all different size rigs and groups, very clean full restroom and private showers great place to camp staff very helpful and make your stay better, great camp host's.
Cleanest camp ground I've ever stayed at. They were on top of everything when it came to clean. The restrooms and showers were even cleaner than some places I checked into staying in
This park is so private because the sites are so large. It's nothing fancy, just as peaceful and beautiful as can be. Nice beach, good walking trails, some paved sites, Friendly staff
Great woods to hike around in, good paths that are fairly well maintained - and great weather. Everyone around was helpful to others that were running into issues and quite a few events were going on.
Lake Monroe was nice. The double decker pontoon we rented was too expensive for what we got. The boat was old, dirty, and didn't have padded seats anywhere. It was also full of spiders.
Great place to get away for awhile, and a very fun drive through the winding wooded forest. The drive over the lake is pretty unique and worth checking out
Always beautiful, no matter the time of year. Lots to explore on hikes
This place has the best trees. Oh, and the rain was fantastic. But seriously, how do you review a National Forest? I've been here and it was a lot of fun
We love this place but haven't really visited much this year because we went in the beginning of spring and our dog got infested with ticks...but it is very beautiful, tons of trails and camping spots!
Beautiful place! Highly recommend visiting Pate Hollow here. There’s a nice lake you can swim in.
absolutely love to work for DNR and such a beautiful place to visit and Patoka lake is amazing
So many things to see. The water is very high but I love the trails! Has dock area beautiful view of the lake.
Beautiful and quiet. Perfect place to get away, camp out, and relax.
Beautiful fall weekend on Patoka lake! Very clean area, close to French Lick where we spent the night. Lots to see and do for the whole family!
Nice and quiet place to camp and get away from the city life. Enjoyed our adventure and can't wait to go back
It was great I go there every year to go deer hunting I had a great time
Wonderful campground and excellent host.
There's some nice hiking trails, but there are quite a few switchback trails that might throw you off, from people making their own paths.
Some of the best hiking in the Midwest. I do alot of backpacking in the Charles deam wilderness area and love camping right on the banks of lake monroe
Lots of lodging choices, equestrian, hiking and mountain bikes trails in Brown County State Park. Park charges entry fees; if you're from out of state be prepared to ante up $10.
It is beautiful. Unfortunately, where this photo was taken, they have closed the camping area. There is another area you can camp about 8 miles away.
Nice shaded campsites and clean restrooms and showers.
It's wonderful nature site esp. if you like hiking!
Wonderful place be ready for a good hike.
Must say though most the people hiking aren't very friendly which is upsetting
My favorite place to hike. So many miles of great trails. The best way to get away from the modern world and clear your head.
There are so many great caves, cliffs, its huge and had some of the best hiking, atv, and horse trails! Beautiful!
Really great place for family and friends. Love peaceful times and the breeze of the wind is so energetic.. please visit, you won't be disappointed.
14 day Free camping, you can bring your horses for trail rides, it has hiking trails, a picnic shelter, bathrooms, and a dumpster, no electric or water, but you can park on the grass and camp anywhere.
Beautiful...nature at its finest!!
I used to live in Brown County Indiana that's where the Hoosier National Forest is was up there every Sunday riding the horses to the trail it is beautiful just about scooter side Tennessee
Beautiful! Great place for family water fun on the lake or camping.
Beautiful and very nice hosts!!
My family is surrounded by Hoosier National Forestry. Most beautiful place to be..So peaceful and quiet. All the wild animals. Love it.💖 …
Park has a great beach, camping and lodging. Wonderful for bird watching if you like Bald Eagles.
Great short hike (1 mile)at the hemlock cliffs with multiple waterfalls, multiple shallow creek crossings and the gorgeous forest.
I LOVE being out here. It's the absolute wilds of Indiana out here, and if love hiking and just exploring, there is a lot to see here.
Love this beautiful Park
Always has been the best place to go if you luv being around nature !!
Born and raised on property adjoining Hoosier Nat. It's easy to forget how gorgeous it is until you're gone for a while.
Beautiful peaceful quiet
Great place to camp
Cool place.. beautiful rock formations.. not far off the road. Great for a short adventure.
Beautiful place to enjoy nature.
Our cabin is only 600 ft from the property line, so yes, we love it!
Great for family fun or just some peaceful alone time. Hiking, biking, horse trails, zip line, swimming, fishing, etc.
It's a nice peacfull place to spend you last days on earth I lost my home my perpus job. Avery thing and a reson to live but for a very short time I will enjoy this blissful moment
I love this place, it is very beautiful, peaceful and primal. There are logging roads to take your 4x4 and lots of places to hike.
So many hikibg, ridi g, gishing, camping spots on beautiful forests, many virgiin, including steep ravines, rolking hilks and Indiana's largest lake, Lake Monroe
Fantastic National Forest with just about every outdoor activity possible -- if you only have a quick afternoon, don't miss Hemlock Cliffs!
Nice easy trails. Beautiful rocky creeks, Moss covered scenery. Clean & well marked trails.
What can I say? The National & State forests all across our Nation are breathtaking, & each one different in its special way. I could never get enough of them.
Beautifully quiet in the winter. Youthfully energized in the summer.
Always a great place to spend time in the woods
Great place without all the horses.
Great place for camping, horse back riding hiking. I like that it's close to Bloomington. About a 20min drive
It's a beautiful place there's some capping there's lots of trails and you can just enjoy nature
Beautiful drive. Take the hilly route through the forest for an unforgettable visit to French Lick and surrounding areas.
We love the backwoods camping area at patoka lake. It's quite a hike but well worth it.
Indiana has some of the most beautiful and scenic national forestry anywhere. The rolling hills of southern Indiana are an ideal testament to this.
The ElRanchero on the Westside of town is Delicious. Tonight Me and my Husband got Burgers Mexicana and French Fries. It was Delicious. I usually get the Beef Taco Salad, it's also Delicious. I think everyone would enjoy eating there.
Absolutely Beautiful, hilly, winding roads through scenic preserved forest. Beautiful lakes, rivers, caverns with activities for everyone.
Fair amount of back country camping, but it's not particularly remote and lots of foot traffic. Not a lot of great views either, forest is quite dense and the hills aren't anything special
Always love riding through here and now I want to walk through there since I noticed they have a paved walking trail.
Good trails, great trails, & not so good trails...if you're backpacking do you're research & choose wisely!
Beautiful area! Hiking water sports, scenic drive
Beautiful place to take a nice drive too. You will not regret it.
BEAUTIFUL! The Turkey's are EVERYWEHERE this time of year! Public hunting land!
One of the best reasons to live in the area, Deam Wilderness is a personal favorite among my friends, as we enjoy more primitive camping
Nice place to visit, camping & hiking. There is a small but nice beach at Patoka lake. Boats can be rented.
Amazing park with great swimming and trails. The campground was so nice and the staff was so friendly.
Great place to take a quick little getaway. Swimming was great. The lake was warm and calm. My family really likes this place.
Very beautiful in the fall time. 2 or 3 nice lakes with trails to walk around.
Great place to go and get away from the big city. Although I did find out there is a high population of Timber rattlesnakes in the area.
Beautiful and very spacious, visited Patoka Lake and was blown away by the scenery. Awesome and easy to access off the interstate.
Beautiful. Well groomed trails. Easy to get to. Open year round
It didn't seem that cold but the ice on the edge of the lake said otherwise. Still, there was a great crowd that turned out for the plunge.
This is really cool there's a lot to do here and it's clean cheap gate fee water sports areas and of course hiking
Hemlock Cliffs & Pioneer Mothers are 2 of the places we visited. The old Growth Forest hardwoods are spectacular with an moderate trail.
Endless vistas, mountains, valleys, rivers, and the most amazing roads...not to be missed for camper, hiker, or biker.
Not much more to say about a forest than that you should go, you should enjoy, and you should respect. There are many things to see here and the better we treat it, the better it - and we - will be.
This is a great park to camp hike and enjoy..Indiana takes such good care of their parks it is just a pleasure to be there...thanks indiana
Great place to take kids to fish
I've lived on the border of Hoosier National Forest for about 15 years now. I can still manage to discover something new each time we go hiking or fishing.
I absolutely love this park. Great people. Great hikers and bikers. Good for both new and seasoned hikers and bikers. I love this place!!!!
Hoosier National Forest is beautiful! Stop in the HNF offices on south 37 near Bedford. Southern Indiana people are so nice too :)
Be careful. What Google maps labels as national forest land is mostly private property
Buffalo Trace trail is for experienced hikers and mountain bikers. It is a peaceful wooded experience.
Secluded campgrounds. Quiet. Nice trails with no foot traffic. Only saw one other couple
Awesome place, the lake just so relaxing. I would recommend ur park too everyone!#
Amazing area to get your family out and relax and enjoy nature and the lovely scenery!
A nature lovers dream place. Pet friendly and fun for the whole family!!
It's where nature meets nature. It's beautiful!
Did a roadside stop for a geocache the Earthcache is fun and we found fossils next to the commuter parking area.
Camping great, no people around, bring all you need or you will have to drive all the way back to town
Always loved this place since I was a little guy. Great place to go and unplug from everything for a few days.
Go and enjoy your family, leave the phones behind.
Beautiful and peaceful
It is a great place to hike. Several pretty views. It was not busy in December.
Beautiful, well maintained trails. Family and pet friendly. Reasonable daily and seasonal gate fees.
Awesome weekend 😎. Staff were great. They delivered firewood we purchased before we got back from the gate.. …
Fantastic camping, overall wonderful experience
Hoosier National forest is beautiful , especially around this time of year.
Hoosier national forest covers a cast portion of south central Indiana. It is a beautiful place to live and visit.
Great place to do some trail hiking and spend so time outside.
Love it but private land is included on this map. Please fix it. Otherwise people don't know they are trespassing and may be greeted with a hail of bullets.
Great hiking and camping, some beautiful, secluded, wild places out there.
Nice camp ground. Good showers. Watch out for copperheads. We had a close call with the grandkids.
Nice forests and rolling hills! Hundreds of miles of mellow hiking and some nice cliff features.
It's so peaceful and quiet
really good experience there me and my kids we had so much fun those are pictures of us on our way there
Beautiful, but full of ticks! Tipsaw Lake Recreation camp sites were ideal.
Great place for hiking and fishing and all other out door enthusiast things
With tons of trails to walk, and plenty of hidden treasures to discover, this is one of the main reasons to come to Perry County.
It is a hidden jail cell
Huge, very nice public forest, as always if planning on going check in and let others know your plans
It's a great place to take your family for the day or the weekend. They even have a ball court right next to the water!
Come see if you love the outdoors come see the Hoosier National forest
Beautiful forest that doesn't really feel touched by humans yet the roads are well maintained
I fish at the lakes in the national forest it would be nice if the had solar street light at the boat ramp
Nice place huge lake good fishing several hiking trails
My favorite place to camp!
Super nice place. Shirley creek horse camp is neat, clean, good trails, nice campgrounds.
If you want some solitude peace and quiet except for the wild animals it's a great place to go
Naturally beautiful - great place for family recreation and beautiful even if you're just passing through.
Good swimming lakes
Had an evening canoe trip with friends during a full moon. It was great. The area is beautiful.
Beautiful place to visit, walk trails, horseback ride, have a picnic, camp or just explore
Clean nice park. Great hiking. However watch out for the ticks.
Beautiful place to visit with the whole family. Camping, hiking, swimming. And clean!! The grounds, bathrooms and showers.
Always love walking in the woods. Hoosier national is a great place for a nice leisurely walk.
Beautiful drive and lots of deer, mushrooms, and hiking trails.
Great place to hike. Make sure you know where you are going, the place is huge.
HNF may be one of the most beautiful places in Indiana. It's worth coming to Nashville for the beautiful scenery!
Beautiful park, just flood water hasn't gone down yet.
We camp here regularly and always have fun. Hosts are friendly and helpful
Beautiful place... Love hiking with my family and friends here.
Love, love, love, and can I say love!!!!!! If you wanna drive-through a beautiful forest this is the one especially around the fall!!!
Great views, walking and hiking trails, bike and even horseback trails in some areas
Squirrel hunting here is awesome. I've spent many years with my grandad in these woods.
Loved my visit there tipasaw a very nice swimming lake just keep your eyes out for snakes like any other lake
Short hike to see one of the biggest walnut tree ever
Good time camping and wheeling.
A LOT of Seed Ticks though.. 🕷 …
One of my favorite places
National Forest, is always rewarding. A place of solitude, where you can enjoy nature at it's best.
Ok i live in the Hoosier national forest. DERBY AREA ROCKS. HEMLOCK CLIFFS IS ANOTHER GREAT PLACE. PATOKA LAKE. AND INDIAN AND CEILENIA LAKES ARE JUST BEAUTIFUL.
This is a great area. I just wish the trails were better marked in some areas.
I love this place, owner and staff are super friendly, and they usually have great additions to my home and yard. Just needs more skulls 💀 …
Nice camping areas, secluded spots, clean facilities. Nice beech and lake.
Its very beautiful its a nice place to take your family and pack a lunch
I love camping here you can choose from thr horse camps or just through out the woods
Beautiful and well kept very large property! Very relaxing and fun at the same time!
Beautiful rolling hills, streams, and lakes make this a great forest for recreation.
Lovely hiking. Make sure you have enough water.
One of my favorite places to camp.
Camp, hike, swim and support the park services. Just please for the love of God don't litter.
Beautiful walk but you have to do a little climbing up and down rocks
How can you not love a forest. Beautiful in the rain..snow..spring..and now the stunning fall..
Highly recommend nature. PERIOD! Doesn't matter where, get outside, and enjoy the simple things. 😁 …
Beautiful place. Nice clean campgrounds, but no playgrounds.
Nice, shady, private spots to camp.. Friendly staff. Very clean park.
Fantastic place to get out and enjoy nature!!
Good place to spend a spring day. You can enjoy patoka lake if you have your boat
Nice hiking trails and there wasn't many people there, so it was quiet
Beautiful country great deer...hunting adjacent land on opening weekend of gun hunting season.
I've grown up in and around these woods and they're gorgeous year-round
Pretty lake. Great camping our site said slightly uneven. More like a hill.
Beautiful trails for horseback riding! Will definitely go back!
Lovely motorcycle ride. Nice people. Glad we took a detour to get here
Fun place to go hiking walking or riding bikes, love to have cookouts with families run place to go
It is where I go at least 3 times a year. All of the major holidays. Lake access and lots of amenities.
Love the Hoosier National Forest!
I live close by. God's country. Scenic views and nature at its best. Recommend a visit if nearby.
Great hiking trails
So beautiful and relaxing just plain amazing a must see!
