I've been an REI customer (and member) since well before this store came to West Des Moines. While it isn't as large a location as some others, such as the Twin Cities location off of 494, it has plenty of apparel, footwear, gear, and accessories for many activities, not to mention bikes. Before a trip out west, I was hurriedly packing my last few things, and noted that I hadn't purchased a couple of other items I needed, such as bear spray. I called the store about 15 minutes before closing time, explaining that I'd barely make it there by then, and asked the associate if he or a coworker could grab the things I needed, so that he and his colleagues could still close down on time. He cheerfully agreed, and had my items ready when I arrived. I was very grateful, as it allowed me to get back on the road quickly and still get toward the middle of South Dakota yet that night. I had a memorable trip, and I thank the people at this REI for helping make it go smoother!

I am very very very impressed with REI would definitely recommend that you go there if you like cycling or rock, climbing or camping. The sports store is very specific, but very good to shop in. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a specific thing for camping I can’t say enough how amazing the workers are.

Tom and Steven were so helpful!! I was out of my depth, looking for some new thermal leggings and was able to find the perfect pair right away thanks to Tom. He also informed me about the perks of an REI membership. At checkout Steven was super informative and helped me check out and become a member in a very timely and friendly fashion. Between REI and Lowe's, these are two stores where I REALLY need to limit my time. REI always has all the stuff I want. And having been a member since 1985, they have always provided and stood behind all my outdoor needs.

As a first timer to REI, we could not have had a better experience here! A staff member greeted us at the door, noticing we commented to eachother on the cool door handle design. He gave us a whole introduction with a background of the company's founder, their membership program, "garage sale", and other tips. We had no regrets paying for a membership after our experience. Staff were helpful throughout the store, and never butted in when we didn't want attention. We learned that they only hire staff who are knowledgeable in the "area" they work in, so you can get great product advice. Yes, the prices are higher than other outdoors stores, but the prices were absolutely fair given the quality. I'm tired of buying Amazon random-no-name products that are just so bad they miserable to use. I'm happy to pay their prices for knowing that they don't carry junk at all here, and I don't have to heavily research the products outside of choosing between a few price points, you know it's all going to be decent. And if for some reason you end up not liking it, they have a 1-year no hassle "return for any reason" policy. Easily this removes just about any hesitance you could have in buying something.

Went here for the first time yesterday. Awesome store with great selection, good pricing and super friendly staff. Carry a lot of activewear/yoga clothing (they carry Vouri which is super soft and high quality and Athleta in particular, great selection of YETI gear, lots of packing organization cubes even if you aren't going camping and our son got a great pair of snow boots and snow pants on sale. Will be back!

Awesome store with great selection and friendly, knowledgeable staff. Genesis, one of the store employees, helped us select a couple of pairs of shoes and was very knowledgeable and friendly. She did a great job of explaining things and helping us with our shoe selections. They have a great selection of top quality outdoor gear and the prices are very fair. We will definitely be back!

Great staff of very helpful and knowledgeable people. Their prices were a bit on the higher side. My family and I moved here from California right before winter. It was difficult to get everything we needed to stay warm. REI was the most helpful in showing us around the items we needed and how to pair them to get maximum warmth. Will shop here again.

REI is great. The people are awesome and the selection is fantastic. A bit frustrated that due to what I assume was a stocking mistake, I paid $120 for walkie talkies that were hanging from a display saying $50. I'm sure it's simply a case of same brand, different sku. Just wish I caught it before I left, but since I grabbed a ton of items I just assumed it was right. I didnt catch the mistake til after I left.

Staff does a great job and it seems they've done a better job keeping typical sizes in stock. There seems to be a lot of turnover at this store but its retail so thats to be expected. REI products have gotten worse over the years but they are still a welcome store in the metro. It would be nice if they rented equipment like tents, sleeping bags, skis, etc like other REIs They've done a good job with Covid. If their products were better quality and if they offered rentals I would rate them 5 stars

I drove 3&1/2 hours to check out this REI. It was worth the trip. Katie was very helpful. I had several questions about sleeping pads and backpacking stoves. She was able to answered all my questions. The person that helped me pick out a pair of trail runners ( David I think) was also very helpful, again ansered all questions. Because of Katie and the staff in general I joined the REI co-op. If all REI stores are as helpful as this one I'll be a customer for life.

Great staff. Friendly and informative. I know seasonal clothes move fast and are switched out for the next season. .. Selection is low and sizes are limited. With the REI app you can scan the bar code and see other colors and sizes available online. So that's helpful.

These guys were the most amazing helpful guys we had a unique situation with finding training wheels to fit a 20in bike correctly we had been through two pairs and could get them to fit right and these guys took the time to make it work! And great prices!

Love this store! Fun to browse around and take your time exploring the store. They have a little bit of everything. That being said, they don't have a huge selection of clothing/shoes/etc. They have a little selection of a lot of things. If you are planning a backpacking trip, they have many resources to check out and supplies you will need.

Not a bad store. Has a lot of options and things to choose from. Staff is very friendly and more then willing to help you out. Very impressed with how well they keep the store cleaned up and the isles clear.

Staff is always helpful and knowledgeable. You can’t beat their return and exchange policy, and a membership is well worth the money. Dividends don’t always apply to clearance or sale items, but even for a person who almost exclusively shops their sales, it has paid itself off a few times over. A recent purchase of mine led them to offer a discount at the expense of a logistical nightmare for the store, but they sorted everything for me and stood by their word even though it took over an hour to straighten out (not for lack of effort). Even though it took a while, I appreciated their honesty and diligence in getting me what I wanted and on my way. Also, I don’t generally recommend collecting credit cards, let alone carrying a balance, but their store MasterCard has some good perks if you shop REI often. Interest is quite high, but just using it and paying it off in full yields greater dividends and donates a little to outdoor charities each purchase. Without question, REI in West Des Moines is my favorite store to shop at!

My favorite place to go for outdoor and adventure gear! The staff is really knowledgable, engaging, and fun to talk with about your next planned hike, biking trip, etc! Only downfall is when I visited last, out of twenty random items that I picked up across the store, only two were correctly priced. The majority weren't priced at all (Promptly put back on the shelf and wondered what everyone was doing all day in the store) and some were marked higher and never discounted. I shouldn't have to have an employee walking around with me to scan every item with their phone to price check. That's the only annoying reason for 4 out of 5 rating.

REI is a great store for outdoor equipment. I like some of its private labels, and name brands carried, like Patagonia, Arc'teryx, Kuhl, Columbia. This store had less of a selection than some others. The people were super Friendly, though.

REI is a great place to get all sorts of camping gear. I had two great employees that helped me get all i wanted. They also helped me order bike shoes that they did not have in stock. Then ship them to my address. Great job!!!

The store: Is a bit smaller than a traditional REI missing out on some of the fun displays, or things that make you think "wow that's awesome, but I'd just never use it enough to buy it" for camping. What they do carry is of very good quality however, so it's worth stopping in. The staff: They are incredibly friendly, and do their best to be helpful. I've received some good advice, and I've run into some trouble. The trouble I've run into, I was looking for a warm lightweight jacket, and really didn't get good help or advice. It felt like they didn't know very much about the different brands. I ended up going home and doing a lot of research before purchasing an older model of an expensive brand that was on sale through a different website than REI. I've also had a lot of trouble with my membership card. For some reason it just wont activate on their end, so for the first month I had a few purchases I will not receive credit for. These two experiences largely made me stop going here first for equipment like boots and bikes, and I've basically never needed to come here second, so I just don't make it in anymore.

I've been shopping at REI for 20 years in multiple states. What keeps me coming back is the knowledgeable sales people, high quality products, and robust product warranties. The few product defects I've encountered have been quickly resolved with a repair or replacement. The semi annual garage sales are a big perk of having an REI membership. At them you can get significant discounts on products which were returned for one reason or another. Sometimes the reason is as simple as "I used it once and it didn't meet my needs."

Always enjoy coming to this store. Glad Des Moines has an REI. I was dissatisfied with a brand of shoe whose quality, in my opinion, has declined over the years. A very helpful staff member not only give me some insight of the changing shoe industry, he also encouraged me to contact the shoe company directly, assisted me with an exchange and suggested another shoe brand that may better fit my needs. I have been a member since 2006. I love this Co-op.

I have honestly never had a better costumer service. I went and they let me try on several backpacks and they gave me the proper socks to try on hiking boots with, they even let me try out the sleeping bags. Even when I wanted to return a sleeping mat, instead of trying to upsell me they went through the causes of why it could be happening and whether it was worth returning. It is easily the best place to buy camping supplies, whether you are a new camper or super experience they have what you need and they will let you know if and what you need. I will be back.

I've become pretty good friends with the sale people from going here so much. I am friends with a good number of them on Strava and know the majority of the people work here because they LOVE this gear and use it often. Knowledgeable staff? check. Many people comment that the prices are high. Well yeah, they don't sell garbage. If you need a bike light that will last a 150 mile gravel ultra bike ride in rain for 15 hours, buy it here. Heck, pick one out at random and it'll probably be good enough. Need a coat that you can commute in every day rain or shine.... You see where I'm going with this. Then there is the membership. Get it for the garage sale alone. Actually, maybe don't so that way I can buy more of the stuff. Also the discount. Not amazing, but you don't have to get a stupid credit card for it.

My wife and I have been doing research and trying on various backpacks for a trip to Europe, and to be used as primary travel bags in the future. We were so clueless we didn't even know what to ask. We were asked by Tim an employee if we needed help. He could tell we were stumped. He spent nearly an hour with us! Telling us what the difference in all the packs are helping us find some that were comfortable for my wife and I. Adjusting the sizes etc. We tried some on that were "ok" but Tim wasn't satisfied. He wanted the fit to be higher here, lower there, etc. We ended up finally finding the perfect pack for each of us. Haven't had a retail experience like that since I don't know when. We joined the REI club and paid for it just in today's savings. Thanks REI and thanks Tim!

I stopped here about a month after it opened to look at backpacking stoves. An employee helped me who owned a couple of them and knew everything about them. He asked where my family was going and I told him northern arkansas ozarks. He had been there and he told me some about his trip and how ticks and bugs can be bad in different seasons. I took his advice and our spring break trip this year was to the arkansas ozarks, no ticks, no bugs, no bears. Just beautiful mountains, wildlife and weather. Thank you!

The staff here AR the best kind of sales people, they ask if you need anything and don't hassle you and they offer information about the REI membership which is a fantastic value if you plan on shopping there more than once in your life, not to mention you can share your membership number to friends or family in order to have them purchase gifts if they don't want a membership to get you rewards credit.

As with all of my REI trips, the West Des Moines store was just as great as all the others. A helpful fellow (sorry I didn't catch your name) gave us an Iowa sticker upon finding out we were looking for something Iowa specific. We're sticker people so it worked out well. If we're ever back in the area, we'll stop by to get more of something we probably don't need. Also, kudos to all the employees that hung around seeing if we needed anything without hovering, it makes an awesome experience. There was always someone near and approachable so we could ask a question.
