Reviews of Prairie Flower Campground
Debbie Drives and Travels
Since I don't own an oversized luxury camper, I probably looked like the Beverly Hillbilly from California until the trailer park boys moved in across the road. First off the campground is Prairie Flower; therefore, I had to search for the flowers. The trails are very well marked and there are a few splendous varieties to be seen. The campground is spacious to be sure. I was in slot B38 and there was plenty of room for expansion. All sites have electric. With my parks discount I only spent 11$ a night. Can't beat that price even though I really have no need for the electric. Sites don't have many shade trees directly. But, there are trees and I spent time chasing the shade. The heat was directing my exertion level and erecting the screen house seemed like too much sweat. I didn't have bug issues.
The northern loop sites looked like modern day wagon train groupings. And the volleyball court was very well groomed. Large oversize play equipment for children.

This is an excellent Army Corp Campground. We got a site large enough for our 43 ft diesel Motorhome. Close to Des Moines.
Beautiful lake. We had a great 3 day stay.
Visited Des Moines, Toured the State Capital. Had great dinners. We will definitely come back.

This campground is amazing! Spacious concrete pads. Really nice playgrounds. Very clean shower and bathrooms. Showers are spacious. Only downfall was no water hookups at the sites.

This was our first stay at a COE campground. What a lovely surprise. This park, located on Saylorville Lake, has a lot of campsites. Most of these sites are large concrete pads and have a lot of space between your neighbors. Very quite and peaceful campground. It is conveniently located about 10 minutes west of Akeny, IA so you are close to any kind of shopping or restaurants you may need while staying here. Des Moines is also not too far away. There is a beach that had beautiful sunsets every night we were there. We camped at Prairie Flower Recreation Area COE in a Fifth Wheel. We stayed in site B63.

This place is so nice campers are not on top of each other. Has awesome beach great views.
John Bruce
Sites are paved and large, facilities clean, each loop has a playground for the kids, really enjoyed our stay
Heather Hyatt
Nice paved campsites on two loops (B and C, a few on the other loops) which is very helpful with a large RV. Spacious sites and clean restroom facilities. We try to stay here every summer during a weekday here and there, but since all sites are reservable nearly impossible to drop in on a weekend. A shame to see sites reserved and then no shows.

This is a very nice campground. It's also very hard to get into. Make reservations as soon as you know your needs.

One of my favorite campgrounds...well maintained sites, restrooms and playgrounds. Convenient to beach and swimming access. Our site had lake view. As tent camper enjoyed the site spacing, as so many campgrounds have become like trailer parks. Convenient to bike trails and a great pumpkin patch near Bondurant.

Mostly spots with electricity only but really nice and clean place. Beautiful view next to the lake.
Dave Wolfrum
Great camping! Our site had a nice view of Saylorville Lake! Bathrooms were clean and entire site is well maintained!

We really like this campground and camp here often when we need to be near the Ankeny area. Sites are large and are spaced far enough from each other that you don't feel crowded. The sites we've camped at have all been electric only so you have to fill your water tank before setting up. Most sites have been very level, many sites are concrete pads.

Great place to camp. Lot of space between sites. They Army Core of engineers has done a lot of work recently to update the campground. A lot of the sites have been paved whick is really nice for RV camping. This is also a great place to stop and take a break in the shade along the bike trail.
Deanna Turner
Love the concrete pads in the coneflower loop. Large campi g lots. Walking trail down to the beach. Supposedly no pets - But see quite a few walked down it.
Cathy Marie
Fairly clean campground, excellent biking trail running through it. Concrete pads in the newer section are really nice...only 4 stars because most sites are electric only (no water, no sewer). With that said the shower houses are very nice.

Prairie Flower Campground is amazing and I have enjoyed every visit I have been there. It's easy to pull around the loops so no backing is required, restrooms are modern and clean, and the grounds are well maintained with playgrounds for the kids. Pets are welcome and waste bags are available. Recommend to groups wanting to have a fun weekend. Get out there and get camping.

We love prairie flower, however, the lawns are atrocious. Grass is LONG and in turn, harboring ticks and chiggers. They haven’t mowed in a long time.

I love this spot to camp at... With a camper and a tent, there is a lot of room at each campsite to lounge at. The addition of the metal rack on the picnic tables is amazing. It is really handy to have when you are using a cast iron grill. The playground was perfect, for young kids and small babies too. Only wish there were swings. The Army Corp does a great job on upkeep of the shower houses. I never walked in to it dirty at all. Having all of the roads one-way is really nice, especially with young children playing and riding bikes. This weekend/week has been a huge success.

Took the family out for a last minute weekend getaway and had a really great time. The campground is well maintained and has several playgrounds for the kids to use and large grassy areas to play in, plus our site was on a concrete pad and had a fire pit and a nice picnic table. The hosts were very friendly and helpful, too. We got lucky and booked the last available spot for the weekend the day before. Don't wait if you want to be guaranteed a spot here, book well in advance. You won't be sorry!
Karen
Very nice quiet campground. Clean large lots. Ours is flat and concrete. Some are crushed gravel but still nice. Showers are clean. Just could use more trees! But its name is "Prairie" Flower not Forest something!

One of the cleanist and most beautiful Parks. The staff and volunteers go above and beyond to keep day to day operations of the park running very smooth. We had one of the best vacations in years! We will be definitely making this a yearly trip! Thank you for a wonderful experience.
Chuck Underhill
Nice campground. Concrete pads in loops b and c, shower house good, but not great. Plan on long lines at dump. Lots of sites for only 2 dumps. Could use a little modernization
Patrick Taylor
Camp ground was clean and very well maintained. The staff was very helpful and abundant. The site was level and all were paved and had a fire ring and had a table in section b where we stayed. Would return I a heart beat. Also the town of Polk City is 5 min away with a grocery store, Subway, and two had stations. This is a great spot to set up a home base to explore Sailorville lake, Big Creek lake, and the town of Polk City or the town of Ankeny which is 15 min away.

Very clean family oriented Camground. We did not reserve a spot ahead of time, but drove in on Saturday afternoon. The host on duty called some of the campers that had received but had not shown to see if they were coming in. When they said no he gave us a choice of 4 campsites! This is virtually unheard of duing this age of Reserve America. That made our day.
mitch jones
Very nice site, only thing preventing 5 stars is the dump station situation is terrible, only 1 station for the whole camp site, and there are no lights around the site at all, very difficult to see and maneuver at night time. The sites are very large and have great scenery.
Brad
Granted we were there when the temperature was approaching 100 degrees, but our site did not provide much shade. Also, the site only offered 30 amp service so we could not run our 2nd air conditioner. The combination made for an uncomfortably hot stay.
Chad Dean
Really like this place. Descent sized spots. Clean facilities. Pretty quiet as far as campgrounds go and it is close to Ankeny and the Des Moines area, so there is plenty to do around the area.
Penny Brueck

Nice family oriented campground with hookups for RV's but doesn't include water. Some sites look out over Saylorville Lake. Nice showering facility.
Steve Strait
Great campground. Very well taken care of. The reservation website is very not user friendly and could use major revamping.
Trevor Itzen
Great campground. Clean restroom/shower house. Lots of room between sites.

A gem of a state park. Nicely kept park (vs our IL parks...ugh), clean, and level sites. Super clean and nice bathrooms/showers. Only wish it was closer to our home!
