Reviews of Gray's Lake Park
Roman Smikh
Wonderful place for a stroke. Very well lit and colorful at night. Unfortunately they close the park at 10. So you get very little time to view the lights.
Tony Scaglione
Great place in Des Moines to go for a walk or just relax outside. It has multiple sitting spots to enjoy the water or if you want to wait until dark you can watch the bridge light up with multi-colored lights which are very cool!
Christian
I really like this lake park. Lots of green in may/June, lively and a great 2 mile run or walk. Bring fish food for the carp along the lake when crossing the bridge, you will likely see some near you.
Diane Davidson
This place is so beautiful. It's peaceful, beautiful scenery, paths to walk on, lots of parking space. It's definitely a must go to place to see. Love the beautiful water and the sand.
Heather Oswald
Love this park! There's so much to do! There's a beautiful bridge that goes over the lake that is lit up beautifully at night. There's also a bridge over the river that lights up. The playground is super fun and the beach is great. I love that the trails around the lake all connect to the bike paths and there's even a tunnel that takes you across the street to waterworks park! Love it!
CONNIE Ervin
Gray's Lake Park is a great place to walk, hang out and enjoy the view. I took a group of my people there for some exercise and peaceful relaxation. It's good for the soul.
No boats were out, but I'm guessing it might not have quite come back from Covid times.
Picnic areas abound and it has restrooms; dog friendly with walkers, too.
Dominique Monroe
Extremely clean and beautiful park. Public restrooms, benches tables and many paths
Terri Hackbarth
Solo kayaking this beautiful last day of summer....good for my soul!!
Steven Story
Nice clean park. Neat little boat dock
Brandon Glenn
Gray's Lake is nice to walk. The path is clean and well maintained. The park fauna is interesting and fairly neat. Along the riverside you can see herons occasionally. The view of the city is nice and access via walking paths is great. Unfortunately, the water is disgusting. You can't fish, swim, or even dip your toes in. It smells bad and often the fish are floating dead.
Marty Hogan
Late winter views. Love this place and 60° weather in Iowa brings people out to the park. Clean up your trash and after your dogs. The homeless housing project in the far portion along the river are a little disturbing. They seem to keep to themselves. Just be careful at night.
Crystal West
Grey's Lake is a beautiful place to walk any hour of the day. Our dogs enjoy walking there. Our grandchildren enjoy it when we take them too. There is a nice park to enjoy as well as walking. Most people are friendly.
Larry Johnson
This park is fabulous for walking my dog. Two mile walk around a beautiful lake with bathrooms available as well as doggie bags too. A beautiful place to visit in Des Moines!
Kevin Russo
Great place to hang out go for a walk or just enjoy the view of the city. They have recently connected more of the walking and bike trails in this park to other parts of the city and they continue to expand as development has started for residential areas around the park
Keith Oliver
Gray’s Lake is gorgeous. One of the busiest parks around, but very well maintained. Included are some of my pics from the memorial for 9/11.
Michelle B
My "go to" place. It's super close by to where I live. Can't wait till Spring actually arrives, so I can get more colorful pictures. But, I love trees (whether bare or full of color)
Aravind Anna
Pleasant weather to go for a walk in January.
Kara Prachar
I went walking here today for the first time. Really beautiful. Great escape from the city. They had a ton of rentals. I hope to use that in the future. Very clean.
Sarah Sims
The trail around the lake is clean and mostly flat. It’s ideal for all kinds of exercise! There are canoes, paddle boats and paddle boards to rent. They have clean bathrooms and a small park. Overall a great and free place to have fun!
P. Lamberty
This is a fun place to go visit when it gets dark because of how the bridge lights up. You can kayak, canoe, paddleboard, paddle boat, bike and go sailing by renting equipment as well. I *think* the trail around the lake is about 2 miles so it's also a great place to run or walk. In the summer the beach is nice to go to. There is also a good view of downtown Des Moines.
Patti n Steve Beach
Nice Park. Great biking. However, the paths were detoured and the signage was not very good. Glad we had a city bike map with us. Beautiful downtown area. Great biking.
Millie Carr
I love walking at grayslake, just recently started it's so calm and relaxing. You can take your time and stroll around and just look at the scenery or enjoy your company fantastic place
Angel Vaughan
One of my fav places to walk, kayak, and skate!
Heather Rosewall
Lots to do with the fam. Absolutely beautiful. They have paddle boats, kayaks, sail boats and more. The only reason I gave it a 4 is because the water is disgusting. There is no way I would swim here.
Dallas Hale
I love Gray's Lake. This is my first time living in a city and I'm still struggling with it very badly, but it's helped a lot to be able to go to a place that's so close to downtown and yet so secluded somehow. I'm excited to spend more time here next summer!
Carla Lee
There were alot of people out walking their dogs, families walking, riding bikes.. just an amazing site! Of course it does help the weather being so beautiful!!
Enes Akbuga
Gray’s Lake always has awesome view. Particularly during winter. Always a good option for walking, running or cycling!
Tom Davis
It was cool we had fun. However we got in Free I would not want to have to pay how much they want though. We seen all they had to offer in under 2 hours.
Samantha Meyer
If you get the chance to go here I strongly recommend it. Gray's Lake is so clean and beautiful. We had a blast.
Hailey L
Vacationing in the area and stopped by here with our toddler. It is a great walk and has a playground. Recommend bringing a stroller or similar, as this is too far of a loop for a toddler to walk. We brought my daughter's barbie fishing pole and fished off the dock as well. Fun time. Clean park, no sketchy people like the sculpture garden.
Douglas Nelsen
Do I need to tell you why it's so fantastic! Perfect comfort zone, oh yeah and I work there, which makes it great !
AOVM
As a newcomer to the city, I am surprised by the vast number of folks enjoying this place on a daily basis. Weekends are especially busy and I was speechless to see how many came out for yoga in the park on Saturday morning (sponsored by the city's parks & rec dept). Well done DSM! 🙌🏼 …
Zach Plur
Very nice location, I love the concession stand ( the ability to buy ice cream, water and food is a big plus especially on a hot day ! ) and the ability to rent fishing poles, canoes, paddle boats, etc to enjoy some time out on the water. Honestly a very nice place to go for a walk and in general to get some outdoor exercise. The path around the lake however is a long one so I've gotta say plan on atleast an hour+ to walk around the whole thing. Biking could be very fun though and I plan on doing that for sure next time I stop by to visit this place (: . One danger I will say is the donation stand right close to the concession stand is home to a Wasp nest which resides right in the slot you put your money into so be careful of that !!! Really not the most sad thing to be around especially for those allergic to those kinds of stings, only plus side is a major hospital isn't to far from this lake, they should have workers taking care of dangers like that in the area considering children and families to visit this area often and a safety issue if anything. I understand it's outdoor but you gotta keep the place as safe as possible for visitors, after all it's a park.
C S
We visited at night to see the colorful bridge, and it was so worth it! Walking across the bridge at night was interesting and the colorful lights were very pretty and picturesque. Each light had a bunch of spider webs and the spiders were all very active which was actually very cool to witness! Great place to visit if travelling to Des Moines for a visit.
Maruf Ahamed
Beautiful lake with clean walking path around the lake. I love the scenic view.
Melissa Thompson
A beautiful city park with a walk around lake. Next to Water Works Park, also a gorgeous park! 😊 …
Gail Olson
Great place for a walk. Lots of trees and maybe you can see eagles or deer. I went to check our the new path to downtown. The bridge is nice but doesn't have great access for bicyclists at the north end. That narrow path is for bikes.
Troy Phillips
Beautiful place for events, walking, water fun, running. Anything out doors this place is wonderful.
Nathan Grasmick
A great place to take the family for some outdoors activities. Clean, pet friendly park. canoe rental, clean bathrooms, swimming, nice views of downtown, handicap accessible.
Scott Grunert
It's a nice 2+ mile walk around the lake. The scenery is beautiful and it's usually drama-free. Nice place to unwind, listen to a podcast or read a book.
John Majewski
Great place to walk or run.
Sweetcheeks Siem
Love the walk here during the day or evening. The solar lights on the bridge are a beautiful rainbow at night!
Davina Jackson
Beautiful and peaceful location for a day of recreation.
Tom Primmer
Nice play to walk. 2 miles around lake but be paths to downtown or Waterworks Park off the walking path as well.
Twnty 1
It a nice park new trails that nice but since I skate board the cracks in the bridge are giant and my 58 mm cruiser skate board wheels cant clear it (Believe me they are big) like put some concrete in the cracks it's just a big hazard for us skaters other wise it's nice
KL Smith
Nice view and a good place to walk, run, bike or just to stroll around. I like the bridge area.
Clint Hutchcroft
Best greenspace in downtown. Excellent place to get a little yak in!
Luis Peña
Beautiful 😍 stunning sunset 🌇 and sunrise 🌅 …
Caleb Stewart
Nice place to walk with family and pets. With that being said staff/workers can be unhelpful. Wife was pregnant and walking around the lake with a friend. They were told that the park would close at 10pm and if they didn't make it out in time her car would be locked in overnight. The worker have a golf cart but did not offer help. Wife jogged best she could while pregnant and thankfully made it in time to not get locked in.
Michael Ahlrichs
Beautiful night, trail is asphalt and in great shape.
Nutan Jayavant
Such a serene place and so close to city. Loved going there and spending time.
Tonya Logan
Best park in Des Moines. Very helpful staff. Adaptive rowing is offered! What a fantastic sport.
Timothy Wright
Best boat spot around loved this place for many years
Stephen Smith
Like that there was natural prarie areas, although it could be much expanded in place of the turf grass.
Jared Mikel
Love this park, great trails that dogs are allowed on. There is boat rental here as well. There are also concessions and swimming areas.
Jinsing Jenny
Great place to walk, jog, bike, skate. Love the updates too.
Dayane Tristao
A great place to walk, take pictures.
Rita Henson
Beach area and small boat rentals are available. Nice trail around the lake which is connected to other trails around the city. Waterworks Park across the street has lots of fishing spots.
Ashley Mapes (Wolfie)
Beautiful park to walk at, bike at, etc. Swimming there is nice. The bridge has a great view and it's so scenic. I just love this park.
Tony Robinson
It was nice to see people out and about. The park itself was beautiful. Some of the patrons could use manners, IE: letting their dog lick off the child water fountain.
James Bidwell
A lap of the trail around the lake is 2.1 miles with an eagles nest, lake, river, and wooded area. Great place to see nature and exercise in the middle of Des Moines.
Tyler Hurley
Beautiful lake to walk around, over-water bridge lighted bridge. Beautiful at night!
Jacen T (Jace)
Fun place to relax, saw a beaver from the bridge and tried to get a photo! I enjoy going at dusk when it's cooler and there are less folks about, but I've been known to enjoy a sunny weekend day here as well.
Emmanuel Robertson
Amazing place to exercise, take a stroll with the family, or even host a party. The trail bridge gives you an exotic view of the park and it's beauty. Thanks to the founders for such a wonderful place to chill outdoors. The park is on both sides of fleur drive, so one can choose to visit both sides. The lake side, or the flower 🌹 garden with luxurious fountains... You wouldn't leave without taking pictures
Mary Wilson
Beautiful scenery, nice and breezy.
Johnathan Blauw
I love visiting this trail - beautiful, peaceful place to visit! There's a walk/bike trail, and a canoe/kayak/paddle boat rental place as well.
Erin Lantz
Great to go out on the water or stay on the trail with the land legs!
ROFL Chopstixz
Went there to check out the view and had a scenic jog around the lake(about 2 miles for a full lap) and dip in the lake where the water was perfect. Definitely going again!
Chantál
Love this park. Once it fully opens it will deserve 5 stars.
jeff hall
Beautiful park & the bridge is fantastic at night. 🚴♂️✌😷 …
Hi Kids
Very pretty place and has a playground, a pretty lake, and public bathrooms... but last tome I went there was a dead bird and a dead dog that looked like it had drown...😶 …
Robert Maudlin
Always a nice place to walk and get some fresh air. Especially at night when it's all lit up my daughter loves it. I can remember when there was a Holiday Inn at Gray's Lake and have watched its transformation over the decades and it is definitely a great place to hang out. I am not sure if I would recommend swimming there though because the water is very high in bacteria. All in all it's a great place to hang out.
L S
Beautiful park. Lake is surrounded by a lovely drive that leads to the opposite end of the lake. Lot's of places to play but restrooms may not always be open. Access to some of the local bike trails as well.
Stephanie de Palacios
This place is so beautiful, when available try to rent a kayak or a bike, you will enjoy your time.
Sam Peters
I love this lake & park. You can swim, fish, walk, bike, roller-skate, and see cute dogs!
George David Lloyd
Was there for my grandson birthday party he turned eight had a fun time shooting Nerf bullets at each other and having lightsaber fights
Deb Kozel
Walking around the lake is a great way to start your day
Rita Flairfive
Beautiful lake and quiet place to walk.
A K
Awesome lake & greenspace in the middle of the city! Excellent walking trails!
stacey
Visited with my pup...sat at a table, dipped our toes in the water, people were giving each other space. It was lovely.
Crystal Kiroff
Grandma and I visited the lake with our prepared lunch sandwiches today. It was a pleasant outing and the tables overlooked the walking trail and water. Even grandma enjoyed the sunshine and people watching as we shared lunch. The bridge at night is beautiful with colored lights and is a great place to walk with family or bring dogs to walk. There are peddle boats and kayak to rent if desired.
Amy Snyder
I love that you get some nature with the water and trees and beach.....but the skyline to the city too. Nice location to relax!
Angela Abramowicz
Great place to walk. Paths are wide. The lighting is nice since sun sets so early. Beautiful location, easy to access, only about 2 miles around the lake. We even got to see eagles. If you are on a bike please let walkers know when you are approaching. And dog owner, please pick up!!!
Lorne Wiggins
I love the place. The air is fresh and the surrounding is clean. We went here for a quick workout. We love the lawn and there are lots of things that you can do here.
Mitchele Walters
Gray's Lake is one of the best walking experience you'll have in Des moines.
marco cruz
Gray's lake is a beautiful park to enjoy a walk
Gloria Cecelia Weber
Gray's lake is a beautiful park. To walk, have picnics, events. Calming environment. No matter who you see, most all people speak. You can meet new people. I have a love affair with this lake. Years and years of memories. Ones to share with friends and families. It also gives away to a another large park. There's boating. Go make new memories or share old ones!
Hello Kitty
Very family oriented place. Beautiful day with a nice breeze! Could not have picked a more perfect day.
Karlee Bruce
Beautiful, pet friendly, nice walking paths and even a beach!
Michael Boyle
I really enjoy Gray’s Lake. It’s an absolutely wonderful spot to spend a nice summer day. The lake is relatively small; the trail loop surrounding it is about 2 miles long. There are also pretty good views of downtown and the trail connects downtown from two directions.
There are plenty of grassy areas to lay out blankets and enjoy a nice day. You’ll see plenty of people hanging up hammocks, walking/running/biking around the lake, relaxing on the small beach, or using kayaks/canoes/paddleboats to meander around the lake itself.
Chase Saldeen
Great relaxing day with my family. The gentlemen running the concessions and boat rentals were very helpful and kind.
Daphne Hoerner
This is a great running trail, an okay swimming hole if your local to it but there is a much better one down the road and grays even is home to a few eagles. I wouldn't recommend using their rentals because it's a small lake and you get charged the basic price where if you go to one of the bigger lakes it is more worth the experience.
Michael Johnson
Awesome place to spend a little time in a 3 seater canoe with the family!
Pete Chojnacki
Nice walkway thru the park and around the lake!
Jack Carraher
We love Gray's! It's a nice park with a good playground for children and charcoal grills for a family picnic. The walking path is well maintained. We often see people doing things on the water like canoeing, fishing, and on paddle boats. The only downside is that it's among the most popular parks and as a result can sometimes get a bit crowded.
Doug McBride
Too many people riding bikes to fast for the walking path. Beautiful area to walk and enjoy nature.
Brenda Guerne
Gorgeous place to walk around and enjoy the scenery or rent a kayak or peddle boat. Love it here
Italia Pedraza
Favorite place to go on the weekends with the family there are grills, a playground, beach area to swim, and a area for bout rentals it's a bit damaged from the flood but it still looks fine
luke cooper
Kayaked around, wonderful trail around the lake. Quite popular as well. Just wish there was more parking.
C.
Nice place to walk, bike, run, sit in the grass or on the sand. Colorful bridge is nice and a memorial. Also an outdoor patio that can be rented. Lotta motorcyclists like to cruise around here as it’s safer than the roads and there’s people to show lff to.
Anika Larsen
Beautiful! Bikers, runners and walkers were all courteous and shared the road. Great day at the lake!
aleks k.
Best Lake to go and relax at the beach or to ride
your Bike, Ride around in your Car, Hike, etc.I like
the New Bridge that they made, it is a nice little touch
to get to the New Development area by Downtown. I
would recommend this place for ALL ages and Families.
This Spring and Summer i'm coming back and hopefully
get to ride my Bike! A M A Z I N G !
Joseph Konczak
Great for avid walkers or runners clean area to grill or have a party.
tennis freak
Very nice park! So cool. You could skateboard, bike, run, walk, and walk you dog here around the circle lake. Animal and kid friendly. There are two bridges. They have many chairs if you need to sit right in the front. Soo cool. Totally fun and a great way to get exercise! Awesome!! It's hard to get parking though. But otherwise AWESOME trail.
yessie hernandez
I love this park so much it's beautiful and relaxing.
Zach Agnew
Absolutely beautiful park. The trail is long enough to walk, run, bike or take the kids/dogs for a stroll. There's plenty of restrooms and even a concession stand if you need a little pick me up. Great place to spend a hour or even a day.
Christopher PinkRolo
I really like this park. Lots of things to do and the biking trails connect around the lake.
Erin Monfort
I love visiting Gray's Lake. It has a beautiful paved trail for walking, biking or skating. It can get quite busy but everyone generally does a good job of sharing the space. It is well cared for and clean. Really an oasis when you need some outdoors time without leaving the city.
Irving Tiffany
Great place to get out and go for a nice walk, with plenty of room to maintain safe social distancing. Also a good place to safely meet others in a small group (pod) around a picnic table if everyone stays masked up. Not many tables, and seating is very limited, unless everyone brings their own chair, or is willing to sit on the ground (blanket might help). But don't get down on the ground unless you're sure you can get back up again. Also, a good place to go to just be alone, people watching or reading a good book. Just get the stink blown off once in a while. You can feel like you're out in the country, even though you're in the middle of the city.
yolanda taylor
The park was beautiful and my daughter loved the new tunnel that they have that was the first time we had both been underneath the tunnel she didn't realize how far the walk would be around the park but she enjoyed it it was great.
Lesley McCoy
No wake no craft lake , small, perfect for paddleboard relaxing
Sabrina S
Beautiful place to walk and enjoy the outdoors!!
Ethan Mcguire
Amazing. Wish it wasn't so close to traffic, but what are ya gonna do? Great spot to hammock, relax, run, read, hike, bike, walk, and hang out on a day off. Kayak rentals are only 15 bucks an hour and well worth it. Shame winter is just around the corner
Haylee Johnson
Clean park and very easy to walk around.
Kelly Rodriguez
Love it here! Spend a lot of time here in the summer. We had our kids' birthday party here. Posted up at the grill closest to playground, and it was perfect. Covered by some shade from trees, centralized location so kids could play or swim, picnics tables available. Beach has always been clean. They offer boat rental, can walk around trail. Planning a summer bbq there in a few weeks!
Julie Roberg
Nice spot to walk or run. Connects to downtown. Loop is about 2 miles.
Kevin Macken
Very nice park. Great walking paved trail with a pedestrian bridge that goes over the lake which lights up at night. Very clean. Swimming beach and nice shaded picnic area at the back of the park. Fishing is allowed and small paddle and sail boats for rent.
Connor Patrick
Really cool place to walk around and enjoy nature!
Steve Nelson
Awesome place to walk; paved walks will link to other paved trails. Very clean, well maintained by the staff.
lil Jayhawk
Easily accessible. Clean. Easy to rent kayaks. (They even have a kayak launch. I guess these are common, but I've kayaked many times over the last 5 years and I'd never seen one.) Anyway... Fun!
Don't go just for the lights on the bridge... they're cool, but not a destination. I waited till after dark to see them... i regret making the kids wait that long to leave.
Mr. Free
Beautiful lake wit great sunsets!!!
Mauricio Verastegui
Great spot for a walk and more. Lots of areas to get great pictures of birds, deer and your occasional eagle. The walk across the bridge is an awesome spot for pictures. Bring dog if you like just make sure to clean up after them. Also great area to bike and row boats are available to take a couple laps on the lake. Also close to a local winery if you are into that kinda stuff lol.
Ginny McFarland
This park is a treasure that is enjoyed by many, every single day. It's beautiful. The lake and park offer many activities to fill everyone's interests. There's a nice view of the city skyline and another of the Iowa Capital building. Many rentals and classes offered at the marina. Great multi use trail, public beach, and a bonus nesting Eagles as well as many other birds and wildlife.
Jazmine “Cierra” Stanley
Great place to walk and enjoy the nice weather
Stephanie Hingtgen
One of my favorite parks in town! 1.9 miles of trail around the lake and over 100 acres of water! You can find yoga here, rentals, and plenty of other fun things! Over the summer they also keep the rentals open late on the nights of full moons which is a really unique experience. The rentals go quickly though so get there at about an hour early to get a rental
Ben Mckenna
Rented a kayak for an hour. I cruised across the entire lake. It was peaceful near the got bridge and along the banks as I watched heron wade and fish jump. I should have brought a watch because I returned the kayak 20 minutes early out of a desire to not be late.
The boat rental place has a really neat kayak launch to take off from and also bring the boat back to.
Overall all a really cool, quick experience.
Josh Parrish
A phenomenal park, just outside of downtown. Lots of parking, dog friendly, a small beach. Lots of different ways to enjoy the park. On weekends during the summer there are rentals of kayaks and paddle boats. There's even a small beach. The water is safe to swim in, but that is not the primary use of the lake.
The main draws are the walking route around the lake (including a beautiful bridge over a portion of it) and the boating options. There is a small picnic area, as well as another area of tables. There is easy access to the nearby bike trail. A wonderful place to spend time alone or with the family.
Debra Gaskins
Lovely fall day. 2 mile trail circles the lake and crosses a lighted bridge with many plaques on it. Connects through a new tunnel to Water Works Park and new public art and also connects to downtown Des Moines across another lighted bridge. Concession stand and boat rental available.
Marvin Azzopardi
Great place to catch amazing sunrises!
Diane Rackley
Ditto all the other positive reviews! Lovely views, plenty of shade trees and running trails. Love the bridge over the lake! Great place to work out or send an afternoon with the family Plenty of parking. DEFINITELY worth a visit if you're in the area.
Mike Law
Great walk around the lake.
Laura VanGinkel
Great trail, well maintained. Moderate foot traffic so it feels safe but not too crowded. The playground could use some TLC, but the rest of the park is wonderful.
Enrique Hernandez
Clean, safe, pleasant landscape, nice people around. One lady was even giving away ice-cream one particular hot afternoon. The fun of people paddling in the lake on boards or boats, or just swimming at the beach is very contagious.
Shawn That one guy
Beautiful, well maintained park. Definitely feels like downtown's backyard. The tunnel under Fleur Drive connecting to Waterworks Park is a big plus.
Christopher Wilkins
There's water and I saw a rock!! Great place to hide dense bodies, but fatter ones need to go in the adjacent river.
G Edison Jr
This park is perfectly placed across the city providing excellent views Exxon Sun rises and beautiful sunsets. Is the great place for morning walk or evening run offering great amenities such as sailing lessons wakeboarding and paddle boarding. Excellent place to relax
Jonathan B
A great park for all. Loved that rental station had a large lake with cheap rentals. We rented a canoe for an hour for $10.00 dollars. That was for two people. The staff is always very friendly.
One thing that is needed is more life vests. On a busy day, there were not enough for all parties. Some of the vests were worn and did not fit. Our canoe had a crack in the front seat and water inside. Not the end of the world, but something the rental station should look into. Keep your product in tip top shape and have enough adult vests for everyone.
Overall a lot of fun. Prices are very reasonable.
Stacey Revell
It was nice to get out and walk at Grays lake, not to busy at 8:30 pm. It's clean and so many friendly people were out! Wide paths and plenty of areas to rest or take in the view.
Tracy Miller
It's been so nice getting back to the lake for my walks! Certain parts of the trail are still closed, but there's still enough trail to get it done! Love walking on the lake! So peaceful and the city keeps it very well-maintained!
Rishabh Dahal
Clean and beautiful lake. Beach area developed is clean as well. Lots of trails to walk or ride around. However please mind that there are no eateries around.
Taylor Hadley
Lots of construction right now, but the dog and I love our walks here.
Timothy Daniels
We like to walk the trail and paddle board here.

Probably the most popular park in the metro - Gray's Lake is centrally located and well-maintained. It has a wide path for walking/biking - although it can get a bit crowded in summer months. You can also find charcoal grills, picnic benches, a terrace area with shade, a beach and swimming area, rentals, and concessions. I frequently run here. Also a great place for geo-caching.
Rebeka Farnam
There are at least 2 separate bathroom facilities, possibly more. A boat launch, swimming beach, several table areas, a playground and a place where you can possibly rent paddle boats etc. There is a well maintained trail that circles the area. It does weave across the road a couple times and isn't always right along the lake. There is no food available for purchase but is a perfect spot for picnics!
Winnie Logan
One of my favorite places and parks in Des Moines. Water works park is the best place for Spring pictures during last week of April and 1st week in May.
Geoffrey Johnson
Biking, walking, jogging, this place even has a BEACH!
Tanner Woody
No dogs are allowed on the rental equipment unless they are 10 pounds or less. Most cats are more than 10 pounds!
Other reviews say this is a pet friendly place. When we were there, we could walk around with out dogs (50 pounds each), and people loved them. However, the boating staff did not harness this same affection.
Frank Bianco
Such a beautiful place. A real gem.
Tara Jean
Gorgeous for a stroll any time of year
Eric Waters
It's a nice park, with a pretty lake and a fun bridge. There's also paddle boat and kayak rental, if that's what you're into. It tends to be a little more crowded than I like, but that's hardly a surprise since it's right next to downtown.
Kayla Wearmouth
This place is EXTREMELY SPECIAL to me for certain reasons. I know they're updating it & haven't been in a year or so, but you can walk around their huge 2•mile path, a big part is the beautiful bridge over the lake ( you can often see some of the fish too) that lights up when it gets dark into a beautiful array of colors! They do have a small cafe that sells popsicles, ice cream, water etc on the path.
You can also bring your whole family to swim at the lake! They have life vests too. No lifeguard. You can rent paddleboats ,& more!! Love!
Joey Freeze
This is an outstanding park in the Des Moines area. It is connected to the downtown trail system and the path around the lake itself is always fun to walk around. The view of downtown is pretty good.
The water is usually pretty cold even in the heat of summer. The only negative to Gray's lake is there aren't more parks like it around Des Moines.
Gene Wade
Great walking area and Eagle views!
William Moulder
A jewel in Des Moines. Well maintained, nice place to walk, or watch people and their dogs, stroll along. Even pretty at night,
Jason Mason
Beautiful place to run, walk, bike, or just enjoy nature.
Lilly
This park surrounds a lake. Popular for walking, biking, any kind of wheeled method of transportation. Small boats, kayaks, wind sailed boards are popular here. There is a fountain for your dog near the main bathrooms. At night the walking bridge lights up with beautiful colors. Fishing, hanging out, yoga, picnics....
Chianti
Gray's Lake park is a wonderful place to enjoy the beach, swim, paddle board or enjoy a walk around the beautiful area. Spent a relaxing day here and look forward to returning.
Paul Andrew Anderson
Since it's so close to my DSM downtown loft I frequent this spot.
Margie Jordan
When we come from GA. to visit our son we always have a picnic here. Clean, nice shade trees. Love it.
Jennifer Bronkala
Love it! The bridge is amazing and rental prices are reasonable!
Shane Cox
Nice to drive through. No need to get out of the car to enjoy it. If you go early in the morning, the park is much more open and enjoyable.
Willa Heaberlin
We were biking. Could use more directions on trails although it was Water Works park that confused us. Bathrooms nice, clean park.
TJ Tollakson
The best city park in Des Moines. Offers paddle boat, canoe, kayak, and stand up paddle board rental. Concession stand with a paved 2 mile loop around the lake. Great for walking. No playground equipment for kids but there is a small beach!
Arleen Sheppard
One of the best lakes to walk with beautiful views , close to everything. Lots to do here. Bring the family. Picnic, water sports scenory. Views of Eagles and their nests
Matt Rittman
Love Gray's Lake Park! Perfect place to go for a run. Very diverse area. There's also a bald eagle here and quite often people are taking photos of it! Definitely a great place to hang out.
Dianne Mahedy
I have been enjoying Gray's Lake for years. But. why do you continue to keep gates closed. ??
I am more concerned about getting killed by a car or truck, than I am of dying from covid, while
crossing Fleur Drive. My 74 year old husband and myself got stuck in the middle section on Fleur and traffic came to a screeching halt so as not to run over us as we finished crossing.
There is No crosswalk, and No light for all the people crossing on foot, including families with little children on bikes and strollers. And, try getting out of your car and rounding families together on Valley Drive!!
If safety is the cities' first priority, I suggest priorities are re evaluated.
Thank you for letting the tax payers know what you are doing..
Meaghan Pike
I had a beautiful day walking with my three wonderful children. This has always been, and I think always will be one of our favorite places to go.
Starr Himes
Gray's Lake Park is a true gem in Des Moines. The well-maintained, dog-friendly path surrounding the lake is wide enough to accommodate walkers, runners and cyclists with ease, while affording a gorgeous view of the park's namesake lake as well as the Raccoon River. A swimming beach, playground, boat launch, rental of several types of small watercraft, as well as spacious picnic area and many thoughtfully placed benches means there truly is something for everyone wanting to enjoy an afternoon outdoors. And *that* is one of only two real drawbacks keeping me from rating Gray's Lake a full 5 stars; on any nice summer day, the park is packed. While being big enough to allow everyone plenty of space, once they're there, *parking* is at a premium. The second drawback is their choice to install a permanent porta-potty in the rear of the park, instead of building an additional full restroom facility but, since it *is* a lengthy walk from the far side, a porta- is better than none at all. But make no mistake, those slight flaws are just that - slight; the only glitches in an otherwise wonderful park.
Summoner Payton
I went running here multiple times while I lived in Des Moines. It's a wonderful area that's nice for those who like that little bit of different types of nature on a trail close to everything when they want to leave.
Taylor Whitney (Doll)
My family has come here generation after generation and I can't imagine a life without the memories I made here growing up. I saw my first fish here, took my first paddle boat ride with my parents, kyacked with my grandparents, fished, swam, picnics, walked our dogs, rode bikes, firefly catching, yoga, reading books on the doc, sunsets, walking the bridge at night with my grandma when it was lit up (and now my own children.) Definitly a must visit for Des Moines.
Julie Woodhouse
Beautiful place to take a walk, although can be quite busy at times. Lots of improvements (i.e. tunnel u dear eur connecting Waterworks and Grey's Lake) and one tions to ike paths in all directions. Will be amazing when all improvements are completed.
Colleen Lees
Great place to walk and enjoy some fresh air!
Mark Burnham
Great walking-biking trail, roughly 2 miles around Gray's Lake. Parking in various lots around the lake. Various Bike trails connecting to this trail. Great brewery (Confluence), also adjacent to lake.
Derek Priebe
Gray's Lake is one of the best places in the city to go for a walk. Right now they only have a small parking lot accessible to vehicles due to some renovations, but come spring it will be the best it's ever been.
Burma Page
Gray's lake- A great place of Des Moines.
Travis Logsdon
Beautiful place like always, just people can make it ugly. Lady was yelling at her children was pleasant
Matt Lankford
A good place for an afternoon walk around the lake. There are numerous picnic tables set up around the lake. It is well maintained and was very clean while I was there. Will definitely come back the next time I'm in Des Moines.
Josh E.
Gray's Lake is one of best parks in Des Moines. A scenic part of the city that everyone should enjoy a few times a year. The only negative is that it is so popular, so you're likely to run in to someone you know, so if you don't want to run that risk, go somewhere else.
Hannah Berlin
Beautiful views all the way around!
Kenny Clark
Great place for a 2 mile walk!
Ronald Reynolds
Beautiful setting, nice place to take a lunch hour walk or run.
Martha Downey
Paved well marked trail, friendly people, some flowers, saw deer nearby, great for all fitness levels, strollers, wheel chairs anything
Cherish Needels
Even though its mostly closed, for construction-landscaping work, its still beautiful. Especially the bridge. Tje bridge is so much prettier and smarter than the old hotel/motel that used,to be there that would aways flood and look horrible until they cleaned/fixed it just in time for it to flood ..again
Mike Edwards
Great metro park with a lake, river, and plenty of mature trees, just south of downtown. Popular with dogs and humans alike. Boat rentals are available to tool around, and there's a swimming beach. Connected to the bike trail system and Confluence Brewing is a stone's throw away.
Jodi Holt
This place is beautiful! I love to get a paddle board and enjoying the sun on the lake! I also enjoy walking here at dusk due to the lighting all the way around the walking trail.
Miranda Lockey
I love walking here but you don’t get to say you have bathrooms and then have them all locked. Pregnant and had to pee. I have to leave to go.
Jennifer Burton
It has a small playground that is perfect for very young children and the beach is pretty clean. I've used the path for years to run / walk as it has few changes in elevation (perfect for the lazy runner).
Angie Nemmers
Mr. KrudinuerPhilanthropist of Polk County, IA, Lead the Way for creating this treasure for all human's & pet lover's too enjoy. I think of this area as "My City by Gray's Lake". View the skyline of Downtown. Recline on the beach. Enjoy the Terrace, named in Honour of 1st City Council Woman Christine Hensley. Take a walk over the Memory Bridge-In Honour of those Human's whom Left an impression on Des Moines, "The Surprising Place". Day or night-the view is worth the walk around. Kayak/canoe/paddle boat rentals directly off Terrace. Reasonably priced & weather permitting. 😁😄😊😎
Karina Johnson
Very pretty place to go with the family or alone time .theirs benches u can sit n enjoy the view go and check it out .
Dan Sayer
Beautiful lake. Very busy when weather is nice but trails are wide enough. Fishing wasn't that great until we fished from near the concessions and canoe rental area.
Bridgette Glass
Great weather, lots of picnic spots in the shade.
Rock Rock Lee
Nice place to go out and enjoy yourself. They don't have a waterfountain at the back end of the lake but one is at the front side. Great to walk or have a picnic with friends and family.
James Cam
I come here to practice my flips/acrobatics when it's warm out. I learned and landed alot of stuff here, alot of chill good times happened here. Love this place can't wait til Spring/Summer time 2021 comes around!
Dylan Mike White
Great park that is near downtown with connected trails. The path is nice and wide for heavy traffic in both directions. I love the scenery of the lake paired with the downtown skyline.
Kevin
It is a nice park in the middle of the city. There is lots to do, including bike paths, bike rentals, canoe/kayak/paddle board rentals and swimming. Currently there is quite a bit of construction going on.
james christopher
I grew up in Des Moines. I’ve never enjoyed grays lake as much as I did when I was back visiting my friends and family. Besides the fact that most of Des Moines is in a flood zone , this area always seems to be under water. But if it’s dry , such an awesome place to walk, run or sit around and enjoy
Pj Jackson
Grey's Lake is so beautiful and peaceful! You can cook out and do all kinds of activities. It's a good place for families or a couple's date night!
Merril Chesser
Gray's lake is clean, pretty, and fun for all sorts of activities. Great outing to get some exercise or walk the dog, have a picnic, canoe, bike, rollerskate... list goes on.
Jason Baker
Awesome, clean trail with incredible views. We even saw 2 bald eagles, but I obviously can't promise they'll be there when you go! 😉 …
Benjamin Mbuthia
My go-to city park to sit, reflect and unwind in the twilight as I watch the cityscape reflected off the water and listen to nature sounds. Tbh the hum of traffic in the background is relaxing too.
Kristi Bean
Even when busy, it is beautiful and peaceful here.
Andrew Meyer
Gray's Lake is great for physical and mental health. The 2-mile trail is the perfect distance for a quick run or walk. The trail connects up with Downtown Des Moines Trail Loop for longer distance recreation as desired.
Dennis Savage
I spend my free time, weather permitting there because it's a beautiful lake whether you like to walk around or just sit and people watch
Superb views day or night of downtown. Love any chance I have the chance to go.
Mary Lynn Thomas
I love going to Gray's Lake for exercise and social interaction. There's plenty of space to incorporate the 6 feet rule and it's very tranquil around the water.
Lena Carter
It’s a beautiful lake with a bike trail around the lake itself. It may be crowded with people on the weekend but would definitely recommend going!
Dawn Smith
Beautiful maintained park with a beach for swim, multiple bike trail accesses to go anywhere in Des Moines Iowa. Canoeing and paddle boat available, lots of picnic areas and wide open spaces in the sun or shade. On some days, you can see the bald eagle's nesting.

Love Grey's. Great walking-running paths. Wonderful scenery and you can watch Bald Eagles on their nest right across the river!
Steve Molitor
Very nice park with a trail around the lake. Swimming, canoeing, paddle board, and sailing lessons are available. High water due to rains causing flooding now and prevents most activities.
Tim Morrison
Clean, open, boat rentals, good walking/running trails. Only complaint is the parking can get right when it's busy but there's more parking on the East end that people seem to forget.
Michael Tribett
Great place to walk and relax!
