We had a great time at Carolina Hemlocks.
It’s gorgeous up there.
We’ll be back for sure.

Great clean campground. Hosts were extremely personable and nice. Clean bathrooms and showers (this should never be taken for granted!!) Small camp store. Clean, level camp sites. Lots of beautiful hemlock coverage on almost all sites. Equal mix RV and tent campers. Two loops though with an upper loop on east side of nc80 and lower loop on west side of nc80 (the lower is the river loop). Neighboring canpers respected all rules and quiet time. Lots of families. Easy access to water at multiple points. Lots of fishermen nearby. Nice trails and walking paths. Close to Mount Mitchell and surrounding waterfalls/ trails. Gate locks at 10pm and reopens at 7am so be mindful of that if you need to leave earlier.

Great place to Camp! I love coming up here! So quiet and serene! They have new host for the 2021 season and they are really cool people. Can not remember their names but they are a good bunch.... Cant wait to come back in a couple weeks. If you have never been here you should come its worth the trip!

Really loved this watering hole camp ground. Has every thing you want from a fresh north Carolina river site. Right off the road. Multiple areas for car and rent. I used the day picnic tables. Plenty of those available with table and grill station. Water isn't as cold as you think so jump right in! Wish I had brought tubes. And if you fish make sure to get a license and catch some trout for dinner right there up and down stream. Was very much fully stocked. Kids enjoyed. Moderately easy to get in and out but not if you are hobbled. That's only down side is no stairs or ladder in and out of water. It's a sea wall step down. We had so much fun in our main area didnt even travel up or down stream from here. Have been here multiple times over 20 years as a kid to bringing my own. Lovely gem of a spot. Will come and over night camp next time.

Gorgeous river and forest, secluded picnic spots and nice bathrooms. Lots to explore with a wonderful swimming hole. Great for crews of all ages, not too strenuous to be enjoyed fully by all!
Peggy Corbett
We have been coming to this amazingly gorgeous riverside campground for years and have always found the staff to be friendly and helpful. Our visit this past weekend raises the bar so very high that it's doubtful any other campground could ever compare. It was a very busy Father's Day weekend yet we were warmly greeted by (managers) Cindy and Maureen who proceeded to escort us to our site AND block traffic so that we could maneuver our camper into the site. Cindy even VERY calmly marshalled my husband into the spot which to me seemed an impossibility, therefore abandoning my role as parking director immediately. It turned out to be the best location ever. The bathrooms and showers were the cleanest I have ever seen them over the years. There was no random debris left on any site, firepits cleaned of ashes and spent wood and branches were cut back making parking spots and paths clear to easily travel. I do not believe these two women ever took a break all weekend. At any given time they were directing traffic, picking up sites, greeting people and delivering firewood. If a visitor parked in an unauthorized spot, instead of being admonished, Cindy and Maureen would help to find them a better parking spot. Their positive attitudes and super warm personalities made this beautiful spot in NC even more wonderful.

Pretty, scenic area. Campsites have a picnic table and fire pit. Bathrooms available, but could use some attention. Our site was #25. It was above the road so there was traffic noise but it was quiet in the evening. Tried fishing in the river, but no luck.

I have been camping there 48 years, I am not a fan of continual “improvements” cutting trees and leaving them laying around in unmanageable sizes so that campers can not dispose of the remnants in campfires makes eye sores here and there for years until they finally dissolve.
Those newer sites that mowed down the rare Indian peace pipes that grew under the foliage there by The road are not natural and unecessary, this could have been planned out much better and could have blended into not detract from the beauty of this place.
I remember when there were only 2 host and not a fleet running a commercial business selling ice cream, T-shirt’s, hats, firewood and renting tubes.
I remember when the trash was in a can in the ground at each site that was bear and raccoon proof and pick up came daily instead of big ugly dumpsters. I remember when they came and sanitized the bathrooms each morning and it smelled heavily of pinesol. I remember when I COULD CAMP IN MY FAVORITE SPOT BY THE RIVER and when it rained heavily all week we kept our eye on the water level- because were smart like that, (never ever had a problem).
I remember the good ol days. I remember getting my first real kiss sitting on a stump by the swimming hole. I remember hand sculpting clay pottery with a new friend fellow camper who brought clay. I remember meeting the same 3 families from Florida year after year the last week of July and we all became family.
I remember taking my daughters tent camping there even before they were a year old and every year since. Each have grown up and become outdoor adventure coordinators at different universities and I think it’s because of the time they have spent tubing, climbing, camping and hiking there.
Please leave “OUR HEAVEN” alone, no more modifications.
No white pea gravel!
*****And please visitors take your trash with you, keep our rivers clean.

Nice outdoor recreational area! Stopped in for the day to swim, but camping is an option. At first, it seemed cash only entrance, but if you pull into first parking area, they take credit cards at the office. The swimming area offers an amazing natural river experience with plenty of area to explore. Fishing and tubing are options. Staff is extremely helpful and friendly.
Traci Thompson
Beautiful primitive campground with showers and restrooms. Great place to fish, tube, and relax.
Chasity Atkinson
Water was nice and cold, but absolutely beautiful
Travis Lenig
Was a great area to relax and enjoy. Camped there a few days and really enjoyed the area spacious camp spots bathrooms and shower rooms were clean
Mj Langerman
It was a pleasant campground with large sites and parking pads. We were not bothered by any wildlife or any traffic noise. It was peaceful and close to hiking! Didn't care for the stone picnic tables. The hot showers were located at the campground area across the street which was ok since we didn't mind walking. But the shower stalls needed cleaning; the drains were clogged and the water kept pooling. The bathroom stalls definitely needed cleaning more often. Overall we were happy with the campground, but may look elsewhere next time.
EvA Ricker
We camped on river so nice to listen to river was muddy from heavy rain but people still enjoying very quiet place
Daniel Woolard
Great location, Hot showers, WiFi available near the showers/restroom. The hosts are more than easy to get along with. All the tent sites are elevated and or slightly slanted to reduce puddling. The stream is nice and wide. There is even a nice rock and water deep enough to jump off of. Don't get the impression that you will be right on the stream like we did. You can barley see the stream from most of the tent sites, but you can hear it. Overall a really nice place.
Amber Bumgarner
Our first time staying here and it was perfect for our weekend get away. Nice trails to walk around on. Bathrooms and showers were clean. Camp host were very friendly. I was a little nervous bringing our dogs for their first time camping after reading a review about their dog barking to much and them being asked to leave. However, we had no problems. Ours still barked a little from excitment when other dogs walked by but overall they stayed pretty calm.
Susan Gibson (Susie Q)
Breathtaking everywhere you look here. A very quiet beautiful place with a beautiful view I love loved it
Jason Grothe
This place was awesome!! We all had fun playing at the river and at night the sound of the river was very relaxing next to the fire 🔥 …
Tara Silver
Great place with beautiful river access - kids loved it and the weather was wonderful! Campground were clean and pretty spacious. Site 7 is NOT for tents even though it will let you book with a tent. Camp store hours are all over the place. Bathrooms are single stall so a wait is pretty usual. Bathrooms weren't super clean but not bad either. Showers are $5 and military style push buttons. Our party wasn't too fond of anyone driving through the campground with a public access and parking right next to our sites. If that area could just be for campers and the other access just be for public use and the enter exit could be figured out I feel like that would be safer for all involved.
OH the best part we saw and left a HUGE Hellbender alone.
Cindy Wilson
I called on a Friday night after work to see if there were any vacant tent sites available for one night. The guy who answered said they were all booked up. Five minutes later I get a call from Burnsville and the same guy, Keith, said he had good news - 2 sites were available because the group left earlier than expected. Keith also assured me that he had firewood set up for me when we arrive, mind you we wouldn’t get there til about 8 pm. Less to say, Keith was very accommodating and was very friendly. South Toe River is beautiful!
Kirsten Zillman
Wonderful place to swim and explore. The water was a bit too cold for the little ones, but for me it was perfect. However, I'm used to cold water as I grew up in Oregon.
Rew Fish Gaming
Very great park. There is plenty of trails that run beside the river and the river is big enough to swim in or fish in. A very nice place to come and hang out with your friends or family.
Phil Toombs
Nice first come first serve camping along the river. Spots are small and the park fills up quickly on the weekend.
Frank Ivan Galdamez
Beautiful place. The river was pretty rapid on day I visited. I really enjoyed my afternoon here.
Jennifer Trull
Our favorite camping place and it sure has been a bummer of a summer this year due to them being closed for repairs can’t wait to get back there for some fishing and relaxing
Jennifer Wolfe
A well maintained campground. I enjoyed listening to the river while I slept
Shana McCurry
I love this place. Several spaces had 'RESERVED' signs when we arrived. Since when do they take reservations? I always thought it was first come, first serve. But, we were still able to get a good spot and had a great time. The river is beautiful... Please take care of it!
Tammy McCallister
It was a great an beautiful place to get go camping site seeing trails your right off the blue ridge parkway at the bottom of mt Mitchell an not far from town we really enjoyed the time we spent there we're diffently going back
Michelle Campbell
We love coming here. Been coming here for at least 5 years now. Mild tubing, great swimming, fishing is good. Everyone is friendly!
Sunny Gough
Beautiful place, amazing swimming holes. Go on a hot day! There's really nice private picnic areas in the Rodos. Staff is really nice too.
4 stars because the toilets don't really flush which gets gross if you camp there, and it's a bit pricey. Otherwise super fun!
cyclety68
I've never camped here because I've never needed to up to this point. I will say that it fills up fairly quickly, which says a lot. It's absolutely beautiful and I love the river right next to the campground.
Robert Martinez
Loved our experience here. Loved that it was right next to the river, made for a good time after our hike.
Dan S
We camped 2 nights. The young couple that are hosts were personable and helpful. The campground has great swimming access and the grounds are kept clean. We were on motorcycles and there was easy access to the site.
Rosalinewolfhatesyou Pruitt
My absolute favorite swimming spot. Beware though..this is the coldest water in western North Carolina.
Eileen Walker
Eight of us went to picnic. We really needed a handicapped area and had called numerous times to reserve one, but no one ever answered the phone. When we drove through the picnic area we found a table fairly close to the water that we could help our handicapped person down to the table. Very nice area with showers and large bathrooms. The only thing that could be considered negative, is there is a fee to picnic/ park, but the collection booth is not at the front entrances. They will come around on a cart and collect the fee, as in our case we were eating and had to get up from our meal to pay.
Steve Robinson
My old hometown campground. Cold water to swim in if you want to. Quite and still the same after 35 plus years. Great hosts.
Shauna
This is a beautiful place to go swimming and tubing and camping for a long time The people that run the place are very friendly and have a small store where you can purchase tubes necessities as well as some tourist items that are high quality. I spent three days there and the water is cold but even for this South Floridian I got used to it. My heart beat normally runs at 105 beats per minute and it dropped to 65 just by spending 3 days here. I have a 7-year-old and a 5-year-old and they loved it. You just can't go to the river after 8:00 p.m. due to bears. But never saw a bear All I saw was chipmunks and they were so adorable. We'll go back there soon
BeL1984
Beautiful quiet little campground with tall trees all around every site, which run a little small, but are perfect for a small tent and a few people. The river makes for perfect white noise to sleep to. Amenities were what you should expect from a mountain campground- if you prepare and bring what you need, it's absolutely perfect. The different hosts were friendly and helpful once they notice that you are setting up, but don't microstalk you and make you uncomfortable.
If you read bad reviews about this place- take it with a grain of salt!!
If you love the mountains and getting back to a simple way of life with peace and quiet , give this place a shot.
J H
Host was very friendly and nice. Campgrounds were well kept. The restroom and bathhouses were surprisingly clean compared to other state/gov funded campgrounds. The river was deep enough for adults and the current was not too strong. A great place for family camping. Only complaint would be the fire grill which did not go low enough, so pack more coals and woods than usual campsites.
Joey Lunsford
Great place for a picnic, swim, and fish. Also a good place to go camping. Tents and campers both. I have been coming here since I was a kid so it's all very nostalgic for me.
Christy Couch
Wonderful, so fun cold and refreshing
Renee Woody
Enjoyable place to spend outdoor time with the family. Bring your swim gear and enjoy nature.
Jessie Marble
Love this place! My family has been going to this campground for 40+ years. Over 40 years ago, My grandparents stumbled upon this campground by accident when they took a wrong turn and they were too tired to go any further, so they stopped here and have been coming back ever since. My dad continued the tradition and took my brother and I here for our first camping trip and now my brother and I are taking our children to this campground. The staff are one of a kind and the beauty of this place is jaw dropping. We will continue to come here and keep the tradition alive!
Bryan
Great campground. Super clean and the most organized camp hosts that I've met anywhere.
Tyle Stelzig
Water was high while we were here, and tubing down the stream was tons of fun! Tubes are like five bucks each. Some fun rocks to clamber around on/jump off also, at least when water is high. I had trouble finding a good spot to run directly from the campground, had to jump in a car for that, but tons of great stuff nearby.
Jack Poage
A relative of mine that lives near there took me there for a picnic lunch. I am a serious lover of the outdoors and spend a great deal of time doing outdoor recreation and have lived and backpacked throughout the Appalachians. What a fabulous place this is!! This one is on my list of the most scenic.
april stump
A family favorite, we go here several times a year for day use and at least once a year for camping. Very clean park with nice rangers, they keep a safe, family friendly environment without being too nitpicky. The river is beautiful and park kept clean. They dont rent tubes anymore but it's a great place to tube with a $15 river rat tube.
joan strickland
This is a beautiful riverside location. It has a nice pavilion, a super swimming area, great day use picnic areas sort of privately divided by woodsy surroundings, good campsites, immaculately clean shower and restroom facilities! View from the pavilion. The swimming hole is upstream from the pavilion.
Angela McGinn
Great place for tubing and playing in the water! Has a few deep areas for swimming and jumping off rocks. Note: The website still says they offer tube rentals. They no longer rent but sell. You can get better quality/bigger tubes for adults down the road at the next convenience store. They mentioned something about stopping tube rentals due to liability issues. Honestly I’d be more likely to sue due to there not being any sort of safety precautions for pedestrian crossing between the two sides of the park. The road that divides them is very busy and cars speed by. Which means they are also loud at night, bring earplugs! One other tip - bring tablecloth and blankets to cover cement tables and benches. They are really rough and uncomfortable to use without covering them up. Other than that, the park is lovely and the hosts were all super helpful and friendly. 5 stars for the hosts.
Thomas Kenna
We make sure we come every year! It is a great camp ground. Hosts were awesome, even gave us there last fire starter. Only down fall, more and more people keep discovering how great the hemlocks are. Thanks for a great time!
N DURM
Love this place. Great access to Toe River water tubing... awesome swimming spot. It fills up quickly! Some sites are close together, too close. If you're next to a loud neighbor and they like to drink-on into the late evening and jabber-on all night... you'll hear every word. Bring earplugs!! Camp at the upper loop, the side not on river, if you want more division between sites. Love this place!! Staff is super friendly, except big slim behind the desk at camp store... seems like a retired prison warden.
HOWEVER, bad bathrooms: bathrooms are single user (which is nice), BUT only 1/2 the sinks work. Not a good thing during COVID. Folks need to be able to clean their hands - it saves lives. Have to give it 4 stars bc of bathrooms. Bring soap!!
Love this place.
Ron Beaver
Great campground, quiet, shady all the amenities. Clean bathrooms. Great river access and trails nearby.
John Henkelman
Great campground. The river is a great way to cool off after a hot day. Best tubing run in Yancy, county. From the main dayuse parking lot there is a nice loop trail for a short hike or trail run. Be advised: it can get packed on holiday weekends such as the Forth of July but is still a great recreation area.
Mike Pearson
Nice area. Camping spots are decent. Fees are a little steep though.
Art Wallace
Didn't actually stay here but will do so in the future. We stopped and asked the camp host about the availability of gas in the area.
Being a Sunday, just about everything nearby was closed. The host graciously offered my Dad a gallon of gas for his Burgman scooter and then declined any payment. A true southern gentleman!
Jason Haney
Very beautiful and friendly good place for camping and hanging with the family
Emily C
Beautiful campsites and pretty clean bathrooms. Not a lot of privacy between campsites, but still very peaceful.
John Lineberry
Closed for camping right now but can do day thang doesn't have play ground for small kid but river is great.
Bill H
The most unique and peaceful campground I have ever been to. My family has been coming here, nearly every summer for for over 30 years. The river is so wonderful, and the people are just as great. When I return, nothing much has changed and I feel like a young boy again!
Seven bel
Beautiful place to swim and has really deep swimming hole to dive and all
Amelia
It was ok. Nice riverfront and nice area to be around but the campsites were very small. Only enough for about one tent. Did not feel very woodsy or in nature at these campsites. The showers did not work during our stay.
K Blake
Great campground on the river. There were several sites available when we rolled in on Saturday evening. I think this is off the beaten path enough to be generally available. The river is clear and calm in this spot. It's a great swimming and fishing spot.
Ben Damato
This place is fantastic. The staff are super chill, the river (creek?) Nearby is nice and cold and gets pretty deep after a rain. Lots of cicadas (or something) talking to each other at night. Makes a cool ambiance
Gary Flaherty
Love this place ! Its kept pretty clean the camping there is great ! There are sites for rvs, campers, and tents. The water is crystal clear bit very cold ! They have a little shop where u can buy souvenirs snacks and even tubes to float on river with and they only cost 15$ ...I will def be back over and over again . Day pass are only 5$ for the day
Pablo Gonzalez
Very nice campground beside Toe River with plenty of space and good amenities, like showers, clean restrooms, WiFi, fire pits and grills, etc.
The staff is very helpful and kind. Our kids loved to visit this place and we are looking to book a longer stay the next time.
Misty Brimm
Had a really good time floating in the water. It's beautiful there would love to go back

A great place on the river! This park provides magnificent mountain beauty. It's situated on a gorgeous river, where you can swim, fly fish, or just hang out. It's a photographer's dream!
Bobby Cooke
Nice quite lil place to go with the family..You can go fishing, swimming, tubing, hiking, all at campground at reasonable price..My only complaint this year, the couple times I went, the host didn't keep the bathrooms clean like they should..
Adam Broward
The camp host, Ed I believe, was the best! Polite, respectful, and made us feel very welcomed. The campsites are great, there clean and wooded just enough for privacy.
Gay Phillips

This is a great place to relax & enjoy God's great creation! If you like camping, 'tent or rv', fishing, hiking, tubing, or just relaxing in the cool shade of your campsite; Carolina Hemlocks is a great place to be. Of course I might be a little biased, seeing my wife & I are hosts.
Douglas Beck
Amazing place to enjoy God's creation and enjoy time with the family.

Went when trout season first opened up.

Great place to take the family for a day of tubing and picnicking...Plenty of spots to let the kids get in the water and splash around and skip rocks...no better way to cool off on a hot day, and no colder water to do it in!
Maureen Stillwell
We are the camp host we have enjoyed our time working here thank you fined outdoors hope to be back next season
Jameson Suttles
Great site with lots do do and amenities, but the campgrounds we're really close together which was a bummer. Not as much privacy as I would like.
rebekkah snyder
One of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. Staff is knowledgeable and friendly. My only advice is to arrive early for a good spot. Hemlocks doesn't accept reservations.
