Reviews of Camp Daniel Boone
Seth Shepard
I can't speak from a scout masters point of view but we just came back from Daniel Boone last week and this was a great camp! The food was pretty good, and most of the staff were very friendly. They have lots of great merit badges you can work on and the views are great. (The hikes are horrible) The layout of the camp is a bit confusing but it was pretty great. They even have their own little 1700's village with Tavern nights. However, I would recommend not doing any aquatics at this camp, The Lake is Freezing! On our last day there one of my friends attempted the Mile swim and got Mild hypothermia. She was put into the Health Lodge and was doing good by the next morning but please be careful. Overall this was a great camp though.
Daniel Gildersleeve
As a lifelong scouter, Eagle Scout, scout parent, volunteer leader, as well as former professional scouter and former camp staffer (not CDB), I give Camp Daniel Boone my highest recommendation. Our troop of 38 boys and 13 adults traveled over 16 hours by charter bus to be here and were not disappointed.
The camp’s summer program handles 600-1000 visitors every week and is very well organized for that high volume of Scouts, leaders, and staffers. From medical to kitchen to rangers and programming, the staff went above and beyond to ensure that our experience exceeded our expectations. Was everything perfect? No. Was it safe, memorable, and fun? Heck yeah. Did our Scouts and leaders have opportunities to learn, grow, take risks, and try new things? Absolutely. Are there hills, rocks, bugs, spiders, long walks, occasional rain, hot days, cold nights, and in-ground latrines? Yes. It’s SUMMER CAMP. But are there also hot showers, running water, air conditioned dining hall, rifle ranges, climbing walls, zip lines, white water rafting, mountain top hikes, a 1700s town, and more merit badge options than you can shake a stick at? Oh yes. I will also add that the trading post is well-stocked and very affordable, including a snack shack in the middle of camp for easy access.
Lastly, if you know anything about summer camps, the tenure and retention of the staff speaks volumes - and they have a very senior leadership team with years of experience serving the Scouts, leaders, and programs of Camp Daniel Boone. Big shout out to some key leaders on the 2022 camp staff team who made our experience exceptional. Melinda, Tucker, Ian, Sweetpea, Thomas, Dave, Wendy, Sam, and the many others working on the frontlines of the scouting movement. Thank you for delivering on the promise of scouting. We look forward to putting Daniel Boone into our summer camp rotation and seeing you again in a few years.

Best summer camp I’ve been to ever, and the food was good, and the showers and bathrooms were very nice and clean, and the showers had hot water too. You are all around beautiful mountains. Tucker and all of the staff were very nice, interesting,VERY funny and informative. The tents/cabins at all the campsites were very nice and all had cots/mattresses in them. You also only had to use a mask in the dining hall and campfire so it’s pretty chill here lol. If I can, I will definitely be returning.
Ed Bach
My Troop has been to this camp 2 different years and it was amazing each time. The camp is well run and the staff took great care of all of our needs. Lots of hiking trails around the camp.
Jud Johnson
Coming from Florida and the hot summer camps, Camp Daniel Boone is heaven. I'm not gonna' lie, there is quite a bit of hiking just to get to meal time. But, the weather, the views and the activities can't be beat. If you're outside of North Carolina, you need to bring your troop here.
Suzie Pressley
This is a Boy Scouts of America camp which also has trailheads to the Shining Rock Wilderness Area, so please drive SLOW thru camp, the scenery is just breathtaking. The camp is also available for venues and local organizations
Maureen
Camp Daniel Boone was fantastic a camp for our troop. My daughter who has been to many camps, said that CDB is her favorite. The food was good. The staff was amazing and did all they could to make the week fun.
The camp is located in a beautiful location, at the base of Cold Mountain. The lake water is brisk mountain water like most all streams and lakes here in Western North Carolina. When you jump in the lake it will definitely refresh your soul.
Remember to bring pants and a light coat, even in thr summer as the mountain air can get chilly at night and in the mornings.
I highly recommend Camp Daniel Boone to anyone who wants their scout to have a great camp experience in the great outdoors.
Stephen Beam
This will be my son's 4th summer at Camp Daniel Boone. He loves the facility and the people! I have stayed a week here myself as a Boy Scout leader and really liked the location and activities.
Ken Lewis
Camp daniel boone is one of the premier boyscout camps in the nation. 800 scouts per week, stocked trout lake, 45+ merit badges. The water is cold, but if you are courageous you can even do the mile swim.
Andy Betts
This is a very nice camp. Excellent facilities. The base camp has everything centrally located, and campsites aren't too far away. No cell service. Mountain creeks run all through camp. Plenty of shade.
The dining hall is very nice. Big fans keep it cool even when it's 90 degrees outside. It has a good trading post with a separate snack window. I only saw a couple mosquitoes the entire week (no bug spray). The camp sites had nice platform tents (fairly new tents with screens on new platforms). Latrines in the campsites were actually nice. Shower houses were in good shape with plenty of individual showers (hot water) and several individual flush toilets.
Each program area has it's own permanent building/shelters. Most were pretty nice, but the waterfront area could use some improvement. Fairly small lake that is very cold for swimming. Staff was very helpful, but merit badge instructors varied a lot as to how good they were. Boonesboro (pioneer village) camp looked like a cool experience.
Internet is a problem (they're trying to fix it). Adults should not expect to do any work from camp. Just checking email is difficult.
Erik Songer
One of the top Boy Scout camps in America. Recommend getting up a few days early and enjoying what area around camp Daniel as well. Sliding rock is a must.
Chris adventures
It is a boy scout camp but it's still a realy good camp. The staff are great they are realy nice and they try and help as much as possible.
Christian Basulto
As a staff member of camp for a few weeks this past summer I can't recommend this camp enough. I have been to camp several times as a scout, and Camp Daniel Boone has every year I come been a magical and amazing place. Camp admin work very hard to keep the staff in good morale, and because of this, all of the staff work extremely hard to pass this energy on to the scouts. I know, that from many of my scout camps, that the energy displayed from staffers really can make a difference and makes learning the merit badges fun!! This really is a great and very safe camp. This past summer every tangible Covid precaution was taken very seriously as well as monitored vigilantly. What a great place to camp and work at. Great location, great food, and great people!
Victoria Woody
Great fun place to camp.... Sit by the camp fire and enjoy nature!
M. Scott Beaton
Top marks for a Scouts BSA camp. The facilities are well maintained, and the staff make the program work very well.
Drew Hill
My kids love coming here for summer camp. Would highly recommend to any Troop looking to come here.
Erik Capozzi
EASILY the best camp ground I have been to as a scout. I was there 12 years ago but still think about it too this day..One of the best memories I have ever had.And looking back it is still as big as I thought it was..I loved the hikes and long walks..Made everything a journey and isnt that what alot of scouting is about? Bugs didn't bother me!We trained to be smart and to deal with nature..The Merritt badge stations where beyond awesome and I had an amazing time. Back when I went the whole place was packed.Chow hall was like a scout party and the fire pit had smack full bleachers and the funnest times...fishing and bringing back your daily catch to cook up with some cobbler..I'd do anything to go and relive that time.Thank you so much for the wonderful memories.I couldn't say enough good things about this place

BSA troop 616 camped at CDB for 1 week for summer camp.Staff was great!!! Very generous, accommodate, very organized. Followed all infection control protocols. Scouts had fun. Happy with IOLS training which was done by Brett speaks. Special thanks to Dev for feeding us good meals. Would love to camp again at CDB in future.
Sam Phillips
Camp Daniel Boone is a great scout camp. The water is a tad bit chilly... just a litter colder than the artic ocean. Staff is great. Lots of unique options including horsemanship and the period area boonesboro village set in the 1780s. They have a forge pottery hatchet throwing and black powder. Most importantly scouts had an amazing time
sarah franklin
This place is always welcoming and awesome!!
Jake
A amazing place to Sind your Boy Scouts I got tons of merit badges complete and everyday there was fun to have from having a morning swim to having a Dutch oven cook off and flags was fun to go to. The only thang bad was the tents that where not to big and had spiders in it.
Francis Costello
My favorite place on this Earth, there is no other like it. I came here as a scout and now I'm back as a staff member with my wife. The mountains are so healing and peaceful. I came here to heal my inner child and in just a week I've come so far. I can't wait to see the man I will be at the end of these 7-8 weeks. I am eternally grateful for this opportunity to grow and experience nature.
Kenneth Gibson
Daniel Boone is one of the finest Scout Camps I have ever seen. The land is beautiful, the facilities are top notch, and the staff are amazing. For years before I came here I had heard Scouts speaking highly of their Summer Camp experiences here, and now that I have come here to be Shotgun Range Director, I can see why. The Camp Director and her staff are superb, and the camp offers a great variety of experiences for the Scouts.
William Benton
Went there years ago with our boy scout troop. Picturesque view in the mountains. Stocked lake at entrance. Enjoyed the daily activities. Stream right by our camp. After showing the guys how to reel in the trout. We cooked at campsite instead of hitting the chow hall. It's was such a great time, we went the next year.
R/P Williams
Drive slow. There are youngsters darting across the road from every direction and from behind every bush on each side of the road. Fantastic camp for Scouts. Restrooms, facilities and camping is for registered Scouts only, so plan accordingly. Use the restroom in Bethel or Canton and plan to camp once you reach the national forest boundary, not on the camp's property.
Pierce Asaad
The best Scout camp in the nation! The commissioner staff is fantastic, so is the Scoutcraft area.
Jon E
Camp Daniel Boone is more than a scout camp, it's a life experience like no other. The high adventure programs cater to a range of thrill-seekers and are hosted by the most professional staff I've come to know over my scouting career. When you are at CDB - you become family. Beautiful environment in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Balls Hair
Camp genuinely was fine, beds kinda sucked, Adirondack’s are too cramped.
Miriam W.
Had a great time at a Cub scout weekend.
Jonathan Luo
I really like this camp. Because of the staff, this camp is very fun and enjoyable, and extremely helpful. Their trading post and snack shack is very organized. The merit badge classes are really fun to attend. I would recommend this a lot.

I went to this camp 2 whole years ago as a scout. I could go on a long review, which i will, but if youre short on time, here it is: ever since, ive been trying to get back to a place just remotely like this.
Im a mountains kinda guy, and Boone is literally perfect. Each campsite has its own benefits and drawbacks. I know some were deeper into the camp and were closer to merit badges, but they had beautiful streams and forests around them that, in certain lights and without too many people, almost looked unreal, like some fantasy forest in Lord of the Rings or something. I was in a newer campsite, Arrowhead, and it was on the side of a steep hill, just under the reenactment place (which was awesome btw. Tell me if you can chug the root beer faster than 11 seconds and ill applaud you). Every morning id wake up, walk outside of the tiny 4 person cabin and sit on this stump that i carried back from the woods. The mountains had misty fog, with a beautiful view over the valley. The trails were so much fun and were a joy to walk. The lake was picturesque, and there were certain times of the day that you could sit next to the brook and be taken to paradise by the sound of the water and the birds.
Not only is it a paradise for mountain ecosystem lovers like myself, but its got a wonderful layout with beautiful cabin-styled architecture thatll make you feel like youre part of some guild... which in a way, you are if youre a scout.
And on top of it all, if you ever get a chance, explore a bit off the beaten path. Keep in mind erosion and safety of course, but have some fun. I hear there are really quiet places around the camp that are fantastical, with beautiful trees, bushes, and even a few brightly colored flowers.
So, do i recommend this place? Of course. Is it what you will make of it? For sure. Id give nearly anything to go back there and spend time with my scouting buddies, and i will forever look for a home that can make me feel the same way as Boone did.
20/10 would go again
Chase Kuhlman
The camp was mostly clean and organized and a lot of fun. The classes were kind of far apart but if you strategically make your schedule it will all work out. Lake Allan is great "warm" lake that you can go fishing in and take the swimming merit badge.

Camp Daniel Boone is beautiful and has sentimental meaning to our family. My father in law was camp ranger for a while and was loved and respected by all. The staff are very hard working and accommodated our family for his memorial service since he passed recently.
Kristi Polanco
Boys did High Adventure Backpacking-2 different treks. They loved it! Amazing views with gorgeous mountain landscapes to walk through on Joyce Kilmer Trail, and beautiful terrain with breathtaking waterfalls on Panther town Trek-which one waterfall you can walk behind it (like in The Last of the Mohicans). Also enjoyed and give a special thanks to the High Adventure staff that make these treks possible-they are cut from a special cloth. The camp itself is beautiful and diverse, with a lake, great amphitheater, grand dining hall, picturesque stream running through it, campsites on hillside toward Boonesboro and opposite side toward other trailheads. Some troops I met enjoyed at least one hike, who had a variety to choose from easy to hard right at their doorstep-you should buy trail maps ahead of time if going on the cooler/hard trails up the mountains or even consider adding pre-trip through areas near Sliding Rock (near Brevard, NC), which is Panther town area with a few waterfalls right off the roadside. Many quality merit badge counselors, even extra horseback riding and animal study options. And let’s not forget to say how cool visiting Boonesboro Village was! That is another request to go back just to sign up for a “mountain man camp week” from boys. Might want to bring extra money for the artisan crafts and shops. Wonderful camp-worth the cross country drive to get there.
Roe Runels
Definitely an interesting summer camp to go to we rotate around different ones every year.
Jim White
When I was 13 I did the Paul Runnion Trek in 1987 and at 17 I did the Paul Runnion Trek in 1991. 3 days of hiking in Pisghah with Pilot Mountain being the highest point on the hike and 2 days of canoeing the French Broad River. At that time rapelling Devil's Courthouse and climbing was part of the High Adventure. In 1987 we got to do Devil's Courthouse, in 1991 we couldn't do Devil's Courthouse because of rain & lightning. I had such a great experience and enjoyed the high adventure so much I came back to do it again.
Conner Lin
I went on the 2017 Week 2 Summer Camp I am from Troop 219 from Plano,TX
We arrived by the pavilion and it was perfectly fine. Anyway, the food was ok. The Bojangles staff on Wednesday were mean and rude. Tyler was an awesome program director. I recommend this place to people because they have amazing staff and a huge trading post.
Thank You

Great camping experience!! Enjoyed our stay for Week Four. Thank you, to all of the staff and scouting professionals. T-30, Stanton, DE.

23 years as a Scout leader we supported our local Summer Camp as well as use this camp. Every 2-3 years we would split the troop to give the senior boys a chance at Philmont and the younger boys at Camp Daniel Boone. This camp was the best organized and staffed to allow the boys to earn a pocket full of merit badges each time and help set the goals for advancement. Our troop was active, attrition rate was low and the number of Eagle Scouts resulted in a troop of over a 100 scouts year to year. Great & frequent activities kept the scouts interested.
Thanks Camp Daniel Boone....you helped make boys into men that became successful in having families and careers of their own.
R W
Great camp. So quiet you can hear your toenails growing. Well, that may be exaggerating, but you CAN hear the hair in your Ears growing. One of the better dining halls in our area. All new latrines. Only negative is that the long-range views of Cold Mountain attract drivers with that "it's all about me" mentality who fly through the camp in a cloud of dust not considering the consequences of what happens when they run over a Scout who darts across the road toward the dining hall. Speed Limit is 7 mph inside the camp, but anyone who's ever spent time there knows exactly what I'm talking about. Wish there was a way for the Forest Service or the NCDMV to fine the self-centered drivers on the way to the Cold Mountain trailhead.
Richard Smith
Great scout camp with lots of activities to do for all ages. Great hiking trails that get you going without being too difficult.
P Williams
Be forewarned - there are NO BATHROOMS at the Cold Mountain Trailhead. Stop and buy gas or groceries in Bethel and use the restroom there. The Scout camp has some Latrines across the bridge. Consider donating a dollar to the Campmaster or ranger on your way in if you choose to use them. They had to close the flush toilets because hikers abused them so badly. It's a beautiful place. Very peaceful. It's also a place to SLOW DOWN because excited Scouts often run across the road thinking they're in the wilderness.
Kevin Crowe
Great program for the kids and good food. Wish they were better about having to port-a-johns cleaned and not smelling so bad. Also supply some cleaning supplies at the camps latrines. Had to "borrow" from main showers and bathrooms.
Nathaniel Bartusiak
Awesome camp and staff. Everyone had a great time. Don't forget your hiking boots!
SAGE TBGaming

Huge boyscout camp! Was informed it is in a rainforest. If you are not part of the boyscouts the forest seems to have a good number of camp grounds in the area.
Grant Beans
While the terrain is... tiring, the facilities are great, the people are awesome, and the scenery, like the rest of the Appalachian Mountains, is beautiful.
