Reviews of Williwaw Campground
First come first serve campground. Good one. Very close to Whittier tunnel. Fish viewing from walkable distance from campground. You can see glacier from campground. Firewoods available for campfire. Make sure to bring cash. No card payment.
Big government RV campground with lots of back-in or pull thru sites big enough for large rigs. Clean and well managed. The only problem was we didn't have changes for the $18 per night camp fee. We put in two 20 bills for 2 nights and move on. The campground is just next to the trail of blue ice. People can walk to the visitor center without driving.
What a beautiful campground! The mountains, glaciers, and woods surrounding the campsite are stunning. Each campsite is far enough from others and isolated by trees to be quiet. There are bathrooms scattered around the campgrounds so that you're never too far away from one. Water available from a hand pump. No showers. In the right season, you can also watch the salmon run here (we were a bit early in mid-July). We loved our stay! While we reserved our stay online, when we arrived around 11 pm on a Sunday night, there were several first-come-first-serve campsites still available.
2018/09/29 - Camped overnight, no host, campground half full at 2:30 PM, and campsites 40-59 closed for season. Weather: afternoon sunny, clear skies at night, and fog in the morning. No fee, No trash.
A nice campground between the Seward Highway and Whittier.
The Portage Valley can get plenty of rain and wind, so come prepared. The Portage Glacier is one of many in this area, so bring the binoculars.
On a sunny day a kayak float down the Portage Creek is a lot of fun. There are many trails in the area including the Trail of Blue Ice.
The campsites are deep, so large RVs will do well here. There is no electric or water here. During off season times the camp is unmanaged, but you can stay for free. No trash collection while unmanaged, so pack out what you pack in.
Great forest campground. Paved sites, plenty of space between sites. No reservation was needed June 14th 2022, plenty of open sites, maybe 25% full. Vault toilets, but nearly filled to the brim. Nice walking path connected to c.g. no shortage of bears on the trails, bring spray. Mosquitos tolerably but present. No showers but hand pump water station. $18.00
surrounded by mountains, glaciers, and forest. There are trails for biking or walking, nice campsites...love it here. CLOSE to Whittier, the visitor center, not far from Girdwood, or the Wildlife conservation center
Beautiful maintained maintained trails camp sites are secluded. It Has public restrooms if needed. It was very quite here even though camp was full. We could hear the creek running. We will be returning
Beautiful campground with very private sites separated by tall trees, surrounded by mountains with glaciers visible. We couldn’t reserve a site online due to the campground being fully booked but showed up any way. The extremely friendly female camp host pointed out the available spots, recommended suitable sites for our large RV, and gave pointers on hikes in the area. No RV hookup. No dumping station. Water via hand pump. Bear territory.
Nice place to dry camp for $9/nite, with your America The Beautiful pass. We had some mosquitoes in the area. It’s only a short drive over to Whittier from here.
This is a big campground. You usually need to reserve a spot 6 months in advance, but there are few spots that can't be reserved. Those are usually filled by Thursday though. There are bears around so keep your foods in the car or bear box. The spots are pretty big and not close together. You don't feel like the people next to you too close. Most people here are pretty quiet.
People will hike or bike the Trail of Blue Ice, Williwaw nature trail, Byron Glacier Trail and you can do a short boat ride to see Portage Glacier.
The camp spots were spaced out just enough to give you a secluded feeling. We had concerns about our reservation for one night and needing to extend it to a second, but the camp host worked it out for us to find a solution. The location was great with lots of nearby trails, Alaska Wildlife Conservation center, and visiting Girdwood/ Alyeska for the day.
Very nice camping are. Only 45 minutes from Anchorage. Nice area close to the river.
Camping under the glaciers of Portage Valley is quite an experience. The pull through site was spacious and private. A moose stopped by one morning. Easy access to the Trail of Blue Ice and a fish viewing platform. A great place to camp while visiting Whittier and Seward.
This is one of our favorite campgrounds! Sites are big, very private clean. Hiking trails, salmon viewing in the creek when they are running. Things to do nearby.
Quiet, clean, paved, and the spots are far apart. There was also a wonderful selection of walking trails around the campground that are easy to follow and beautiful even in the rain. You are out of cell range if that is a concern for you.
Spacious, yet private feeling camp sites. Facilities were well maintained and campground hosts were friendly and helpful. The kids loved riding their bikes around the nicely paved loops.
Nice campground with glacier and salmon view
Excellent campsites and price. All sites have no services. Two negatives: campground needs some maintenance and there is no dump station.
I like Williwaw and would give it 5 stars (when weather is nice, which it was) but someone saw fit to make a latrine near our campsite instead of walking to the outhouse. Some people..
Great campground. There is a lot of privacy and lots of trails to explore. Kids can ride bikes or hike and there are stocked lakes nearby for fishing or boating.
Awesome campground.
Because of the private seclusion campsite.
Beautiful campground with nice paved roadways.. beautiful views. The host wife was a little on the grumpy side because I failed to include my tag number on the registration form .. squawked a lot
Very clean, quiet, and private campground. Nice size lots. Great location. Good campground for families. Recommend.
Clean, beautiful, spots aren't too close together, the host was very friendly and helpful. Loved this campground!
trails pass through the campground, half the sites are with shade. nice view of glacier, river and mountain, by the roadside however very quite at night
Nice National Forest campground. Paved fairly level sites. Fire ring picnic table, pit toilets, No hook-ups.
Wonderful, clean, and amazing views. Lots of nice trails from campground and close to Whittier for Prince William Sound cruises.
Great place.
Very nice, and cheap, campground to stay in for a day trip to Whittier. We stayed here in a 42 foot 5th wheel.
Great camping spots, secluded and quiet. Amenities are clean and easy to access.
Great hiking and biking areas
Beautiful and leafy campground, with easy access to the Blue Ice Trail and a peaceful salmon viewing dock.
We had a young Bull Moose go through our campsite! We were ecstatic!!
Great campsite. No showers, but bathrooms were nice.
Spacious and private sites. Plenty of pit toilets near sites.
Great views, close to multiple hiking trails and fishing spots.
Shady and close to lots of hiking. Paved and level sites suited to rv camping.
Tables need to be replaced soon They are rotting away
Cool views of glaciers. Trail of Blue Ice is a great scenic walk.
Very nice and quiet campground.
plenty of pull through spots, bathrooms. seems like the water pump handle is broken off though :(
Great area as it has a trail nearby and areas to swim
Big sites with lots of green, nice campground

It was a little small for a tent stay, so I set up a tent in the depths of the forest outside the site.
Depending on the site, you can see the mountain glacier
It is close to the river, which is ideal for salmon viewing, and you can enjoy walking.
