Reviews of Beast and Cleaver
Michael G. Barash
We came for the wine bar and everything was fantastic. It's an intimate space with an outstanding wine menu and excellent food options. Everyone was super friendly too. We will absolutely be back. You should make reservations if you're coming for the restaurant. Weekends are a multicourse tasting menu, but there's excellent food served during their wine bar too. Strongly recommend!

Simply the best specialty butcher in Seattle. High quality craftsmanship and a wide range of choices make this place stand out. The service is exceptional and they always patiently answer questions even when the line is out the door, as it sometimes is. Creative new sausages, pates, and unusual cuts of meat make this place a culinary adventure. The price is very fair given that they source their meat from local, humane farmers, not factory farms. Give them a try!

One of my favorite places I've ever eaten at...period. The sunday tasting menus are not to be missed. The passion they have for their food and wine is evident with every single course.

YOU MUST GO TO THE WINE BAR! NOW! Wow, what an amazing dining experience. The space is cozy and we were seated at the window. Only gripe was that a place to stick your feet in front of the stool would be a welcome addition. We started off with a bottle of Reynvaan that was a great price with only a bit of markup (excellent bottle as always). The Somm Nick was delightful and very knowledgeable. Katie was great at front of house. The pate with smoked plum jam was a highlight and the burger with maple and bacon was decadent and an umami bomb. Super rich! The London Royale was cooked perfectly and packed with beefiness. This is a must buy in my opinion. We let the kitchen choose a sausage for us…andouille…and it was great with nice spice. We didn’t save room for dessert. Epic meal all around. Seriously some of the best food in Seattle. Epic meal.

Very difficult to get a happy hour reservation. So, if you get on their happy hour reservation wait list, be prepared to receive email notications of openings about every 3 days and then, when you immediately try to get the reservation, it is gone.
I finally tried just getting a reservation for 1 (myself) and was able to get a reservation within 1 week.
Be prepared to sit in a crowded bar at the very end. Luckily, I sat by some very nice people (tourists from out of town) and they shared all of their food with me.
The best foods were the roasted cabbage with miso white sauce (wow!) and the spicy Italian sausage with cheese and the roasted potatos with ranch dressing.
Cons:
The smash burger was completely raw on the inside and over salted. The American cheese slice on top was flavorless. I tried the pig's head charcuterie and it tasted like raw, greasy lard.
The wines are meant to balance out the foods, so the wines are mineral and acid forward. So if you like cabs and merlots, look elsewhere.
Also the wine menu is not helpful. I ordered the house sparklingy wine and the menu did not even mention it was a rose.
Be prepared to take a cell phone photo of their blackboard menu at the front of the restaurant, because their is no menu and the menu is not visible from the bar.
The staff was very real and dedicated!
I think everyone should go before the staff geets burned out and some new owner buys it and it goes downhill.

Delicious steaks! Got some ribeyes that were delicious. Prices a little high but worth it for the high-quality meat. Staff knowledgable on how to cook the meat properly too.

Great local butcher, wish I lived closer. Their selection of meats is great and I love the pates and rillettes they make. I do love that their selection of house made sausages is constantly rotating. They have great sources for their meats as well. Maybe it's a good thing I don't live closer, pretty sure I would be spending all of my money here if I did

I went there for the first time based on the rave reviews. I was impressed with the meats, but less so by the service. They seem to have an opinion of themselves that is fattier than what they sell. Even if I'm wowed by what I purchased, not inclined to return. Honestly, everyone acted like I was interrupting their day. Didn't even offer a bag for my purchases. Not even a thanks for coming in. I think the cashier said something like, you're done. Yep, he's right, lol. Many other options for high quality meats.

Beast and cleaver is my favorite butcher in Seattle! They always have such great looking meats and cuts of steak that we're often not able to find elsewhere like Bavette. The butchers here are so knowledgeable, and always have good suggestions on cuts of meat. They have wine, eggs, broth, and coffee too! Even though we don't live too close by, we always try to come here when we want to get high quality meat.

I can't say enough good things about the staff, merchandise, curation and overall quality. I do think they are the best butcher shop in the Pudget Sound region. I'll leave you with this antidote, I just bought a few tenderloins and the quality of the butchering is fantastic, with the lines of fat flowing throughout the cut perfectly. I will continue to go and buy their excellent bacon as well.
Wine bar night is to die for dining experience.

Amazing. Probably the best meat I’ve had in the entire country. Good wine selection.

This is a long overdue review that I meant to post when I took the Bacon Class. I came to learn, but was more interested in eating. When I spoke to Kevin on the phone, he said there would be a lot of eating and bacon. He did not lie. He showed us the different cuts of meat they offer at the butcher shop, offered us different types of bacon he served up on the spot and the different pates they make in house. Everything was exceptional. He is a great instructor and very personable. I hope they offer more classes since the current ones are sold out. Take a class/dinner when there's a spot. You won't regret it.

Perfect shop for all your meat and charcuterie needs. Locally sourced meats, and very helpful staff. I just simply walked in (though you may want to call ahead just in case), and asked for 10 short ribs. They brought out the rack from the back, and Chris hacked away at it for me to produce 10 beautiful pieces that my clients raved about. 100% customer service here. I almost didn't want to leave a review, because it won't be a secret anymore! They even give classes and make their own sausages and dough for pâté.

An absolutely wonderful shop with a great selection of high quality meat. But the true gem, at least for me, are the pates and such. There are not that many places in Seattle where one can try things like these, so it’s incredibly good to have it.

This is the best of independent business- incredibly friendly, facilitating, knowledgeable, folksy and with spectacular products, everything in this store is superb. Their eggs are literally the best I have ever had, prominent marigold yolks announcing their presence, the only sausages I have ever been able to eat (allergies), amazing meat cuts and a jive that cannot be beat. I also love the fact that they purchase locally, source ethically and respect the animals we are fortunate to have.

Having Beast and Cleaver in the neighborhood has been such a joy!! I shop here at least once a week and have also been to their wine bar and Peasant restaurant in the evenings.
The meats are always top quality and 100% worth paying a little bit more for the very very best. Beyond beautiful cuts of meat they also make their own sausages which change in flavor all the time. It may be basic but the bacon is the BEST bacon I’ve ever had. The wine selection is bomb too, we just go in and grab any bottle that looks interesting, trusting that anything in the shop will be amazing. I could rave about this place forever, it is so good!

This place is phenomenal. Interesting flavor concoctions, delicious wine pairings & great staff. I’ll be bringing my friends back, for sure!
Melissa Bennett
I went in for ground beef and came out with all the goodness they have to offer! 7yr top sirloin a whole chicken to roast and the pate! Best first visit to the butcher ever.

Glad to see that this very promising establishment just arrived in the neighborhood, very clean and charming spot that will offer lunches and sausage making classes in the near future, I had the chance to try their homemade paté and I have to say... delicious . Will definitely come back to try a lot more of their cut !

Only good place in Seattle (to my knowledge) to get fresh and high quality beef shank (牛健) which I use to make Chinese five spied beef. Too bad we’re living far from this shop now.
Debra Zimmerman
Wowza! Excellent wine, the sausage, the meat! Just go! Yum!

A great modern butcher shop! The staff are kind and helpful, and they offer a large variety of products. On the expensive side, but otherwise a great choice.

It's amazing. Have been doing to get meat cuts there for a while and just recently experienced The Peasant restaurant and it was an incredible experience.
When going in for meat the staff are always very knowledgeable in recommending a cut when I tell them what dish I am trying to make. Always give good pointers as well. Highly recommend.

I bought their bangers hoping they taste like the one of my childhood of eating English sausage. They didn't sadly, but they had a faint taste that reminded me of the South African ones my friend use to make me help make. So it still good. A little stronger on the herbs they would been dead on with the SA ones! Yum.

My favorite butcher store in Seattle. Amazing meats and the guys always take time to recommend how to cook them. Got a long slow beef roast that my guests were blown away by. Tried their porchetta is was fantastic. Grilled their chicken and it was clearly much better quality than is available at high end Seattle stores. They have precooked Italian style ham (prosciutto cotto) that tasted better than when I had it last in Bologna.
Kelly Thynes
This place is always putting out the best of locally sourced meat. Great assortment of sausages and pate made on site! Anxiously waiting for a round of blood sausage 😉 …
Scott Greenberg
Phenomenal meal. Each course was better than the last, right up to the main. The staff was amazing. However, the chairs were absolutely terrible. Next time I'm bringing pillows.
Jonathan Ross
Love this butcher shop. The level of knowledge in this place is over the top.
So far I would say you have to drive damn near to Napa to find a butcher shop on level with this place. I gladly drive here from Whidbey island.
Pierce Young
Great stuff here! Standard meat cuts plus amazing charcuterie. The schedule is a bit erratic and they may not be open during stated hours. Best to call ahead before you go.
Michelle Eisley
High quality meat and customer service. They were awesome and cut our ribeyes to order. And that wagyu on display was beautiful A5 beef. Definitely coming back.
Jen H.
Nice, clean, modern neighborhood butcher shop with a wide and unique selection of fresh meats. Helpful staff. Their beef jerky was very good, made in house. We also tried a variety of their sausages. There may be a wait on the weekends.
Phil Jones
The BEST sausages and other delicious proteins. Wonderful quality. Great team.
Colton Wilhoite
Only bought the filet mignon(tenderloin cut) and it was definitely 5 stars. I usually broil my steaks after letting them rest for 30 minutes and the thickness let me sear it on 4 sides for a total cooking time of 12 minutes in a cast iron.
It turned out perfectly medium rare with pink throughout the whole steak.
The quality stood up to my experience at Daniel's broiler and the roommate said it was better than the 100 dollar steak he had at the metropolitan grill.
I haven't been to many other butchers in the area besides double dds meats, and I probably don't need to try anywhere else.
This was very high quality and a wonderful experience.
Tim Merritt
The selection of various meat products is amazing! Sausages, Paté, Roast Beef, Pastrami, and so much more! My dog loves the dog treats too! I probably stop by at least twice a week, and there is always something new to try. You will never be disappointed with the steak selection as well. I'd give them ten stars if I could.
Jeff
Hands down the best butcher in Seattle. Their new wine bar is great as well! Would love to try their restaurant, but alas it's quite difficult to get a reservation.
Monica Chamales
These guys (and women) are wonderful! The meat (and wine, and maple syrup) quality is amazing. I particularly appreciate how quick they are to give ideas for how to cook different kinds of meat -- I've frequently left with a cut I've never cooked before, followed their simple directions, and ended up with a fantastic dish. I'm lucky because I live close by, but they're definitely worth a trip if you live farther away!

t doesn't get much better than this local little store in Loyal Heights. This store is a combination butcher, fishmonger, bodega and mini farmer's market.
They have everything you need for a picnic if you're headed out, snacks, a great cut of meat or fresh seafood.
The people are friendly and helpful, seeming to actually enjoy their jobs. This neighborhood and shop are a must visit when in Loyal Heights or Ballard.

I was so excited to go to this local butcher. However, this morning I bought a 5.66 lb whole chicken for $45..... that's $8 a pound. I can understand paying a premium at a butcher, but not like this. I can also understand paying $8 per pound for only chicken breast... however, for a whole chicken, which is only 65-70% edible meat, this is a rip off. For reference, the national average price for a whole chicken is $1.28 per pound.
