Reviews of Dunaway Books
I was very impressed with this bookstore. They were having a sidewalk sale that drew me in. I went in just intending to buy a couple books from that sale but got sucked in to poetry and then plays. Petted a sweet dog. Talked to an employee about Neil Simon, and they were a treasure trove of information, even providing me with notes for further reading/viewing of Simon's plays and work with Your Show of Shows. The person who rang me up was similarly kind and engaging. I rarely buy paper books anymore, but when I do, Dunaway will have my business.
This is definitely the place to find a good book! Everything is categorized very nicely and the owner is super knowledgeable about helping you find the book you want. They also have lots of chairs for those people who get dragged to the bookstore with a friend who really likes books and takes a bit longer than they anticipated. Make sure to check out the basement as well.
My friends and I walked by after breakfast nearby and decided to pop in for a browse - it was a good decision! The book selection is very good, well labeled, and the employees were very helpful when I wanted to check for an obscure book. Even better - the atmosphere of the place was incredible. It felt bright and warm and welcoming! There were several chairs around the store so you could sit down and read a selection for a little while. Very thoughtfully designed place. I left with a wonderful selection of poems by a poet I've recently found. While I'm only visiting town, if I come back through St Louis, I'll be sure to stop by again!
Store owners are very helpful and know exactly where books are stored on their shelves! Saved me time searching and allowed more time to relax and browse through books. The atmosphere is thoughtfully set up to allow you to sit and relax. You have to stop by and say hello to Blue!
Thank you Claudia!
Ive been to this bookstore twice now, and so far have spent a few hours in there each time I've gone. I have come out with a few stacks of books too! I love the set up and selection of books(which is quite large) I definitely recommend coming here atleast once. I will be coming back as soon as I can!
Beautiful, eclectic, and cozy are just a few of the words I can think of to describe this business. The guys are all knowledgeable and friendly. The next time you want to visit a bookstore skip the chains and visit this gem on Grand. You might even find this nifty cardboard scene tucked away on the shelves .
The atmosphere in there is great, very calming and relaxing there's a piano to play, so many books to read and sift through. A delightful place... 😌 …
Today was my first time in. My experience was superb. Great staff and a ton of amazing books.
Smaller local bookstore with a good selection of books. Helpful staff and a great atmosphere!
I am a vulnerable to the allure of a used book shop! Two floors and a balcony, well organized, favorably priced! Probably family owned and if not they have an affinity for books and readers.
Great used book store with many old prints. The basement has a ton to look through. I plan to return again soon.
Great book store full of books. You can spend the whole day here. Staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. And unlike other used bookstores that have cats, this is the first one I've been at that has a dog. Named Blue.
I have found music books and sheet music for piano that I could never have found anywhere else.
A gem in STL. Well organized, rare books! Friendly! I can spend a day here.
Outstanding bookstore!
The staff here is really nice and super helpful. Their collection is great and the store itself is very well done and beautiful!
My biggest issue with this place is that I could not stop finding books that I had to purchase. They have an awesome and unique selection. I will DEFINITELY be back next time I am in St. Louis!
Very cool book store with aisles I could get lost in for hours!
This is definitely the place to find a good book! Everything is categorized very nicely and the owner is super knowledgeable about helping you find the book you want.
Huge selection of books you don't see other places. If you're looking for something that you've struggled to find - topic or title, check them out! Large Judaica selection as well.
Lots of options and great used books!
This is my all-time favorite bookstore. As a rare book collector, they have sold me some of my favorite pieces, including the crown jewel of my collection, the amazing 1766 Samuel Johnson dictionary pictured below.
In addition, for someone who also just likes *old* books these guys are the best you can get. Everything is priced extremely reasonably, and they have books on just about any topic you could want, and from any time period.
The staff here really seal the deal. They are extremely knowledgeable and engaging and love talking about books of any kind. One of the first times I came into the shop I expressed my interest in old books and one of gentleman spent the next ten minutes taking me on a tour of their most amazing old materials, even grabbing books from the back rooms he thought I might like to look at. They really go above and beyond to make your experience a positive one, and they're one of the reasons I go back as often as I do.
Overall, I can not suggest this bookstore enough!
Dunaway is one of the best used bookstores I have ever been to. They have an amazing selection, all organized and accessible. Also: bookstore dog. :)
I love finding good old fashioned used book stores. They have their own special atmosphere, and this one doesn't disappoint. Large selection of books on three floors at reasonable prices. If you're anywhere nearby and you love books, check this place out.
Oh man, what a cool place. Miles and miles of books. They have mostly second hand books, didn't see too many new books. But for a bibliophile this place smells like heaven. They have so many titles, I was amazed to see some of the antiques they have. What an amazing place!
My daughter and I walked in the door and were immediately greeted by the staff. Their dog ambled over to us and immediately laid down for some tummy rubs.
The store is nicely laid out and the shelves densely packed. The areas and shelves were labeled with the book's topics. Topics covered everything you'd expect, and probably some you wouldn't like a whole section of books devoted to Judaism and books in Hebrew. In addition to the main floor, there is an elevated area at the back, as well as a basement with even more books.
In addition to books, they also have music CDs. I didn't see any kids books, but we didn't go throughout the entire store as we were on a bit of a schedule.
If you like used books, Runaway is definitely a place to check out
This is the best used book store in St. Louis. They have a variety I have not seen before with affordable pricing. Everything is well organized and the stacks seem endless. The couple who owns this store are wonderful, insightful folks who leave you be if you want to be alone with the books or offer up interesting and fantastic conversation. This is good place to go and get lost in for a few hours.
Beautiful book store with an upstairs and even bigger basement. Good selection of antiques as well as newer books. Has seating to review anything interesting you may find. A must stop if you're in the area to eat.
I Loved this Bookstore!!
The staff were very helpful.
A lovely, friendly dog greeted us also.
Nestled in downtown St Louis on Southwest corner of Grand & Arsenal in a historic neighborhood.
$.25 honor system parallel parking.
Oh, and 2 doors down from an ice cream / custard parlor.
Grab a good book, a cone and walk over to the park and read. Ideal!!
This store has always been one of my favorites among the South Grand strip. The shop feels like a cozy, little shop that could be featured in any sort of movie.
The only thing that was lacking was the very unorganized factor of the store. But the new owners, have redesigned the store, getting rid of the crowded factor, but still keeping the charm.
I was very happy with this store, and will continue to come back for many years to come.
this is my favorite book store in the whole wide world. the books are cheap and I always find what i'm looking for (and if i wasn't looking for anything, i usually find some other delightful surprise). there aren't a ton of places to sit and read, but there is a little area with a few chairs in the basement. in the summer, the basement is delightfully cold. (less delightfully so in the winter...). cozy, friendly, and one of the guys who runs the place has a british accent. it's the little things.
This is a wonderful little piece of book heaven. In talking with the fine gentleman at the counter who was exceedingly knowledgable, you will find what you need. This establishment has been in St. Louis since the 60s and functions similarly to a Half Priced Books, but is independently owned. They have a HUGE selection of Critical Literary Analysis, a large Poetry section, the only opera section that I have ever seen in a book store, an extensive play and drama section, and a large selection of old cloth bound and leather bound books. They don't have a lot of newer titles, but you will most certainly find something in their two and a half floors.
My library. Very Humble place. Lots of good material.
Old books, lots of books. I was in search of particular ones, but did not find any. Place is pretty big with upstairs and downstairs! Got some pricey relics as well.
A great place to find a used book. You could even sell your books here for store credit or cash. We have a running total going back-and-forth. It’s basically like a library. Anything you might need is there. Lots of books on history. There’s even a basement full ask that you might not notice if you weren’t looking.
Best kept book hunting secret in the LOU..check out the coffee shop literally steps around the corner across from Tower Grove Park. Great coffee and food! Buy a stack of books and head over for a great meal! Vegan menu too!
A truly unique bookstore; really great if you're looking for old books with character, but also new books. It ranges from the 1500s to modern day. It's like a treasure hunt. Staff are very friendly.
Independent book stores are getting rarer so appreciate a good one. I threw the guy clerking a hard ball. Where are your European Exploration of the Pacific section, he did not bat a lash and directed me to the Sailing history section. From there of course got into browse mode and bought six books instead of one, for a quarter what they were new. Enjoy your visit. The cafe on Arsenal street is a good place to sit and read with a coffee, Mokaby's I think it is called.
Neat little book store. The staff were pleasant. Found this one Neil Young book that was a great gift idea. If you have some time to browse their limited collection. Please do.
It was magical. I showed up on a cold blustery day, just before opening, and the owner took pity on me and let me in. There were more wonderful books than I could have imagined. I left with an armload. I will be back again...and again!
Very helpful staff and excellent selection. Everything from used late runs to collectible first editions. Nice location and excellent antiquarian bookshop vibe. Will def stop by again.
Staff very friendly and helpful. Wonderful selection as well. I don't travel often, but I love visiting bookstores when I do, and this was worth the visit!
This is the best bookstore in St. Louis. Three levels of used books, rare books, and the biggest selection of local authors in town. Buy a book and go across the street and read it in Tower Grove Park.
Awesome! I didn't have much time to look around, but I found a couple books I needed. I'll be back when I have more time.
Wonderful bookstore! Organized & great selection! Fair trade-in values! Very nice & helpful owner! One of the best bookstores ever! Thank You!
This is exactly what you think of when you think of an authentic old used bookstore, but moreso. It's organized, the staff is knowledgeable, and the collection is huge. It's kid friendly.
Wow. The book finds here are unreal.
Fantastic selection to browse through. One of my favorite book shops that I've been to so far.
I love this book store!! I really take my time there because they have so much to offer.
Enjoyed finding books I haven't seen in a long time.
A great place to browse through old books on almost any subject. And books not quite so old as well. The atmosphere is quite appealing. Check out the basement collection as well.
Amazing collection of books that you won't find on Amazon or BN. It has the feel of an old school record store without the snobbish attitude.
This is one of the best used book stores I've ever been to.
A quaint little book store with a New York feel. The people here are amazing, I am always treated like family. I absolutely love this place.
Sometimes they have great books. A very poorly set up and maintained LGBTQQIA+ section shoved in the basement next to scifi books...
I was very impressed with this bookstore !! Great prices!! Nice displays.
Such a fun store
If you are a serious book person, this is the place in StLouis. Very helpful and knowledgeable staff. Set aside a few hours at least. Reasonable prices.
I love this store, they have a rotating stock of well priced used books.
Lovely place to spend an afternoon getting lost among the stacks! I would recommend asking the staff for assistance if you are looking for a particular subject or book and are in a hurry, but wandering is more fun!
A great used bookstore. Very fun to browse. I have bought many books here.
The store was so amazing and they had such a wonderful selection of books
Love their selection, got lost in the basement looking at the mystery books. Bought 2... can't wait to read them
Absolutely loved this place very friendly atmosphere.

This place is super cozy, comfy, and cheap! It has a beyond amazing selection for awesome prices. I love it.
Best book store in St. Louis. Great place for antique and gently used books alike.
One of the coolest little bookstores. The SciFi section is in the basement. I found some really cool SciFi novels.
This place has a ton of books. The owner opened up early to let me and my mom look around and he gave me s free book.
Great bookstore. They are friendly and all ways engage with my kids.
Great place. Perfect when searching for classics or collectable antique books!
Cool shop! Huge selection, make sure you check out the basement. Could spend hours here every day!
Amazing selection, sincerity in service, and dedication to the art of book-collecting. This is a must see for book lovers of all ages!
A rare gem. You will never walk out without something interesting. Owner is a very pleasant man.
So many options and a charismatic owner, the biggest "little" bookstore with a cozy 'sit-down' vibe.
Great and surprising prices. Large selection. Good location near restaurants, ice cream shops.
Nostalgic place with some really interesting books, you are sure to find something you will enjoy reading.
Cozy little shop with a great selection of vintage books and great taste in music.
Such an awesome book store, check out the downstairs too!
An excellent place to find old books. Parking can be kind of wild, but that's to be expected on Grand.
Wonderful independent bookshop with a particularly good selection of old paperbacks.
Awesome used book store, never know what you might find!
Significant Judiasm section. Well organized.
Great books
Vern was very helpful, extremely knowledgeable.
Ample books to browse. Music too. Helpful service. Charming setting.
Nice finds. A little overwhelming. Go there with a plan, that is for sure. Check out the basement!

Best used bookstore in St Louis. I've never left without finding a new treasure.
Great online selection. Hardbacks and soft covers. Great prices.
My favorite used book store in St Louis. Somewhere in the stacks, something awaits.
A lovely bookstore run by lovely folks.
Wall to wall with books. Cozy sit down and read place. It's hard to find a specific book though.
Excellent used book store. Helpful staff.
If you're looking for a book, you will probably find it here. Books on everything. I mean it.
It smells like books! The people are friendly and helpful.
Awesome place with a large collection of nostalgic books.
Truly exceptional ownership. They were very knowledgeable and friendly!

Not nearly as cool as it used to be, but they are hanging in there.
So many books, so little time. Gotta get back here!
Great shop. Very knowledgeable staff.
Best selection of books in the city
HUGE Judaica selection!!! :)
A great bookshop to wonder around in for a while.
Fascinating selection, pleasant place to shop.
The books are as plentiful as the knowledge of the staff.
They got rid of the dollar book section! 😥😥😥 …
In a world of dying bookstores these gems must be treasured!
