Reviews of Cellar Stories Book Store

This is a great little book store. It's surprisingly big and there is a lot of variety. Everything is well organized too. Some of the books on really obscure or niche topics seemed a little overpriced, but most other prices are fair. Left with 6 books for about $25. They have vintage maps, postcards, and ephemera too.

This store is like home reading books an just enjoying the nostalgia it's sad to inform you all this bookstore is closing it's doors on the 31st of Jan after entertaining and giving the neighbors knowledge after 39 years . They are selling everything go there and get a picce of history before it's gone!!!

Best bookstore I've ever been to. I've bought probably around 200-300 books from this place in the last 8 years. An incredible spot with incredible prices. My favorite thing I bought here was a leather bound book set that were all Charles Darwin from the 1800s

sad to see these guys will be closing shop at the end of Jan '23, but that's the way of all things, I guess.
wall-to-wall books at solid 2nd-hand prices. book lovers, take advantage while you can!
Steve Wallace
Friendly staff Great selection of used books and vintage paperbacks. Will be back one more time before I leave Providence for sure.

Had such a great time on this visit. I try to get to their Spring and Fall sales every year and this did not disappoint. The employees were very nice and offered to hold my first stack at the desk while I went to look for more.

Adorable store with a wonderland's assortment of 2nd hand books from antique to modern. Wandering around the store feels like slipping into another world. My favorite section was their foreign languages section! Gotta love a good Italian edition of Dante.

Cellar Stories is a good bookstore that could be a great bookstore. The positives: Good volume of books, very fair prices, and some offbeat material. Particularly strong in art and architecture, as well as New England, Rhode Island, and local history. Interesting assortment of ephemera. Where it falls short is in fiction, where the selection seems thin, the pulp mystery/thriller/sci-fit material takes up a great deal of shelf space relative to general fiction, and the organization is less than ideal; foreign language is fairly strong, but too many secondary and lit-crit selections vis-a-vis literature; history, science, and economics have decent offerings, but many shelves are burdened with monographs that are so specialized, technical, or dry that it is hard to imagine anyone plowing through them. Well, tastes vary. But a few clear negatives: A very minimal street presence makes it easy to overlook; a stairwell that will make it difficult or impossible for some older visitors to visit the store at all; and a no public restroom policy when most used stores in New England offer use of a restroom. Surely ladies and gentlemen who are obviously at least potential paying customers could be afforded such a basic courtesy. As to staff: Knowledgeable and engaging enough at the point of sale, but during neither visit here (few customers each time) was I made to feel particularly welcome, asked if I needed help or direction. Make no mistake: Cellar Stories is worth a visit, and if you are fit, have used a restroom, and know what you're looking for, you'll do OK. The store may rank high among stores in Providence, but it is hard to justify ranking this among the best bookshops in New England.

Love this old book store! Service is terrible. Books are too expensive. It is dusty, musty and smelly, too hot inside in the summer and too cold inside in the winter. Anything specific you might be looking for will be hidden under a mountain of old books and magazines or not in stock at all... but I love scouring the shelves and piles for those rare hidden volumes that absolutely no other book store will ever have. You will ALWAYS come away with a treasure if you look hard enough.

A cool place, with thousands of books. Along with retro items that are inexpensive. This is also a charitable Foundation which supports in her youth, and to give them a leg up into becoming young men productive citizens. I enjoy going there because I always find a special treasure that is very inexpensive. It's a secret so don't tell everyone it might run it. Just kidding.

Cellar Stories is an amazing place for any bibliophile. Narrow isles filled with books, the scent of books permiating the air, and classical or talk radio playing. A great place to just go and be surrounded by books. They even have a children's section with little chairs and toys. One of my favorite places in Providence.

Providence's best bookstore! Monster selection. Really terrific selection of military history books. If you like books you need to budget a few hours to browse. There is a lot to see here. Prices are reasonable for that part of the country. The owner was friendly and knows his trade well.

Throughout many years of visiting and exploring Cellar Stories, I have never been disappointed. Either I find for what I'm looking or I find something that I didn't know I wanted yet.
The owner and staff are superlative, stellar, laid back and informed. Could it get any better than that?
Find their door on Mathewson Street, climb the stairs and be prepared to spend more time than you might have planned.
Thanks Cellar Stories Bookstore.

Best used book store in Providence, without question. Floor to ceiling of bookshelves, and you can literally find absolutely anything you could ever want. Life Magazines from the 1940's? Got that. Science books from the 1800s? Got that too.
The owner and staff are very laid back, and can help you locate particular titles. Better yet, just roll in there and start browsing. I always find the back room with rare books to be a special treat!

Great Customer Service!!!! I had purchased an antique book over the summer and had a few questions I just had to have answered since I was unable to find this book anywhere on the internet. I called Cellar Stories where I had the pleasure of speaking to a very kind and patient gentleman whom did a search of his own on the internet and was able to provide me with some information. I plan to visit this store in the near future and will recommend this store simply because of the customer service I received over the phone.

You can spend days at this place and never get bored. I found literal treasures. Amazing place. The staff is a little curt and unfriendly and seems in general to hate the presence of humans sharing oxygen with the precious books

Books vary in quality and condition, but since there are many of them, you should have at least a few good finds. And good prices, too.
