Reviews of Douglas Harding Rare Books
A terrific store. Has tons of antique maps and amazing books, all reasonably priced.
Amazing bookstore! Many sections filled with incredible books that will surely peak your interest
Great book store. If you love books, you will certainly find something here!
Quaint family run used book store with large selection over wide variety of subjects. Something for everyone with many mainstream titles along with eclectic, hard to find items. After purchasing, review your treasures over ice cream across the street
Huge inventory of used books, including an impressive collection of materials on Maine and New England. I always find something interesting there.
Huge selection of genre, limited pre-1900 selection. Has some fantastic editions, but expect to pay full retail price. No "deals" here I'm afraid. Not that that's a bad thing per se, just know in advance that this is not an out-of-the-way bookseller, but rather a knowledgeable dealer.
This is one of my favorite bookstores in all of New England. Huge selection, fair prices, knowledgeable and friendly staff, this place truly does the whole experience proper.
I’m completely blown away with the amount and selection of books! I couldn’t take it all in in one trip, I must come back!
It's hard to explain the amount and variety of books here but no matter what your interest is there's a section for you. The books are neatly organized in labeled sections making it easy to browse. The maps and prints are really great quality and variety. I hope to come again.
I could have spent all day in here but unfortunately my kids were not as impressed as I was. I did end up finding a cool old collection of Percy Shelley works, wish I could have stayed longer because I'm sure there were many other treasures to be found. The gentleman at the counter was very pleasant too. Would definitely go back without the kids next time I'm in the area.
as a crazed book lover, i knew i just absolutely had to stop by this store when i drove past it with my family. we found the time to do it yesterday and i was absolutely awestruck. if i didn’t have other things to do yesterday, i would’ve stayed here until they made me leave. all the rooms, filled mostly to the ceiling with old books, new books, classics, and controversial books. it’s paradise. from the way it smells like old pages to the way they have a little older register where you have to type in everything’s price. if i lived in this town, i’d be here as often as i could and probably overtime buy out their entire stock! i’m glad i got to experience this place and feel like i was in my comfortable element. it was quite wonderful.
Always a great adventure, selection best in region Doug is quite knowledgeable...My go to for decades.
I've been coming here for a few years now. It's a great spot for books, maps and more. The man who owns it is such a nice soul. I look forward to it every year! Check out the massive selection!
Update: we visit every year, and it's still great!
Nicely organized large used book shop. Thousands of neatly organized books on shelves. After meandering through several of the many rooms noticed small book types on shelf fronts which helped locating a particular genre. A few stacks of books, waiting to be shelved, adds to the charm of this shop. Definitely will return when more time allows further browsing in this wonderful slightly stuffy old book scented shop. The ice cream stand across street is awesome too! I
Deceptively huge store. There are tons of rooms in this old converted building. You think you've seen everything and then another room with unknown treasured opens up for exploration. Keep your kid nearby if you bring them because it is a bit disorienting, but for me it was more like an adventure. Didn't find anything I wanted because the sci-fi section is a bit small, but definitely worth a look if a bibliophile.
Its a rare nostalgic gem of Maine, I love the rare finds. What I love about this place it was once an old train station for a wealth resident of Maine. Sadly though it maybe leaving, but in the mean time if you're in the Wells or in Maine itself, stop by and relive you're childhood and who's know make a rare find.
Huge bookstore with rooms upon rooms of used books. It's a bit of a maze to make your way through but it's fun turning the corner and finding a whole new section of books to browse through. Also has a great big room full of old prints and maps, slightly expensive but fun to browse through. I always try to visit once a year when I go up to Maine and it always has a great selection.
Wow! Almost overwhelming...but books its is, room after room. Titles from every genre and appeared to have a large selection of rare and European print editions! Enjoyed conversation with owner and other guests!
If you have time and hours to kill you can get lost in here. Great shop and lots of books at great prices.
Book lover's paradise. Enormous collection of all genres you can think of. You could easily lose yourself for hours exploring all the possibilities. A must stop for old fashioned reading enthusiasts.
It's definitely a place to go if you enjoy looking for your favorite local New England authors, old & rare New England maps/prints, plus the experience of the smell of old classic leather bond anquiet books
My wife and I had a great time browsing the stacks at the Douglas Harding Book Store. The books are in great condition and seem to go on forever. The selection of old maps and prints is huge and of excellent quality. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
Thousands upon thousands of books every catagory you can think of. Deceptively huge inside, a maze. Salesperson more than helpful, yet let's you roam and look yourself. If you love books, you need to stop in and see their selection!
I have been to a lot of bookstores but this one could be top 3 - give yourself at least an hour!
They had a great selection of old and beautifully bound books. The owner was nice enough and genuinely tried to help. The organization, though, left much to be desired. Also there was confusion with the books for sale on the web so I couldn't immediately get the book I has driven hours to buy.
Harding Rare is a lot like the State of Maine itself. It's a treasure hidden in plain sight and a stop well worth the time of any who might venture. All the trappings of a used bookstore are here but there's a fair amount of unexpected joy as well. Come for the books, stay for the smell.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! I got at least $120 worth of old, cool books. The man who helped us was a sweetie and I had an amazing time looking through the poetry section. When I think of a bookstore, this is what I think of. ☺️☺️☺️
One of my all-time favorite book stores in the country! Huge inventory and every type of book you can imagine. A must-stop every time I am in Maine. Great staff too, friendly and knowledgeable.
I love this place. This store has great books at amazing prices they have plenty of selections so you could easily find a book that is just right for you.
Amazing book selection!
We only wish we had more than a few hours to spend in this amazing used book store! If you're a book nut (as I am), don't miss this place. Some wonderful finds.
What a find. We got a great 100 year-old map for a reasonable prince and the proprietor was very nice. If you like books and maps it's worth the stop.
Has some nice books. Pricey, but he has them.
Place needs work and is for sale at 750k..great route 1 location and great books. These stores are a dying breed. When I become a crypto millionaire. Look for me here.
Well organized and large bookstore with a wide selection of used books and printa. Definitely worth a visit if you like old books.
I love books. I love libraries and privately run bookstores. I really love old books. And always find several books that make me happy every time I go to Douglas Harding.
So many books! Take your time going through the shelves. I found a great set of Art books I plan to gift for Christmas.
Loved this store. The most varied arrangement of books I've ever seen. It seems like it never ends.
Unbelievable, words can't describe the selection of books in that store. I'm definitely going back.
An impressive collection of books and maps at extremely reasonable prices. Went in looking for a thing or two and came out with a bag load.
So many books! Rooms upon rooms of reasonably priced books
A real treasure. A cornucopia of titles subject matter sprawling across a number of rooms. From collectable 1st editions to dollar paperbacks for the beach.
It’s a huge selection in many genres. And a massive Maine genealogy collection. He is planning and slowly moving the entire collection up the street to across the post office...
I went into a book coma upon entering. So many books! The staff is so helpful. Great prices
A wondrous place with a literal labyrinth of books. You can find just about every category you can think of. Great prices and rare finds, I highly recommend stopping here.
A lot of classic and older books, a nice stop if you're looking to satisfy your book smell needs
If you're a book lover, then you NEED to check this place out! I could have spent hours here.
Great variety of books. This place is huge. There are books to suit every interest.
Huge book store, with a great selection of used books across all genres. I could spend hours in there.
I wish they weren't selling. This is the kind of bookstore I could live in, with old and new books stored in a maze of rooms.
It's a well organized labyrinth, and the person I spoke to was able to tell me if they had what I was specifically looking for or not, saving me time and aggravation.
The coolest bookstore I have ever been too. An essential stop for history buffs!
Many books from all over the world, and in every genre. I love browsing here.
Visiting every summer I find books I didn't know I wanted. A must visit for readers. Forsake the pixels. Go for the real thing.
Huge place, if you can't find a book that you want, you're not trying. The only con that I have is sometimes the staff could be more friendly.
Great collection of books. Could wander in here all day.
Lots of books duh. Fun place to explore didn't find any of my favorites: classic computer books
Great used book store- quite a selection of books, maps, and prints!
Hands down, the best bookstore I have ever seen, anywhere. A must see!
A treasure trove! I focused mostly on their art section, but there are so many titles in this place in every category.
This is my favorite used book store. I make sure to visit it every summer when I am I'm Maine.
Great shop nice man who runs it, had everything that I wanted that I could afford, could have bought more if I had more space still want to go back...
