Reviews of WORD
Anna Valentini
WORD is love at first sight❤️ It is located on a cute block, right next to Hamilton Park. Homey, cozy and neat bookstore with great selection of books in variety of genres. Fantastic children's literature section, offering art supplies and toys in addition to books. Reasonable prices! Sales people are knowledgeable and patient with customers of all ages. Will certainly be back!
Jake Comito
I’m a frequent at this bookstore because it’s incredible selection of books and games, devotion to local artists and authors, and their amazing and friendly staff. WORD is also perfectly located on Newark Street - I can’t resist stopping in every time I’m in the area!
Justin Woo
A great community store! They are always kind and helpful and can order anything you need. Does it come in two days? No. But it does come and it's held by the staff for you, as opposed to being chucked onto your doorstep by an underpaid, over stressed Amazon worker.
Lucie Fremeau-Fernandez
Word has such helpful and friendly staff! Great book store with a broad selection. They have games and other fun things, too. I love that they added outdoor seating in Hamilton park!
Theodoros Yiouras
A lovely coffee-bookstore in NJC, progressive and gay friendly. Staff smiling and happy. Although there is not a great variety of titles on shelves, there is e-shop available to satisfy one’s appetite and there are clothing stuff sold. I loved the socks! Cards accepted.
Willie Mae Brown
I called this bookstore to inquire about “My Selma”book.
The gentleman who answered the phone was very kind. I look forward to meeting them soon.
valerie anne robledo
Reminds me of a library! They have cookbooks, recipe books in colorful pages & lots of books for kids too! You can do some reading in one section of the bookstore & order your fave coffee at the same time too!
Anna M
This place is ingenious! Food and books, two excellent things in life that can and should be enjoyed together. Not only that but they have a wonderfully eclectic selection of both, you can easily stumble upon treasures around every corner. Vegan and gluten free options abound with a myriad selection of local, interesting desserts. Walked in on an event they were hosting which gives the place an even more awesome vibe. Amazing spot in the neighborhood ♡
Steven
Just discovered this spot not too long ago and my last two visits have been amazing. Customer service is also really good. Male ringing me up was helpful and even recommended me some titles after I told him I got back into a genre. Will definitely be returning.
Fatima Ling
I usually just have a coffee and check out what's new, but to my surprise on this day there was a story time and the atmosphere was great. Nice comfy nook and extremely mellow. I think I'm a regular now 😅 …
Sasha Massey
I love this place. First, the customer service is very attentive and warm. All the booksellers are highly knowledgeable about their inventory and are always willing to help you find something, or suggest something similar. Second, they are very intentional about showcasing BIPOC authors and stories that are less represented in other bookstores. I never fail to find the book I'm looking for, our stumble across something new that I always end up loving. They also have a selection of cards, puzzles, journals, candles and other gifts, as well as a cafe in the back. It's the only place I'm interested in buying my books from!
Emily Anderson
Great selection of titles, focusing on high quality and recent publications. Really great spot to find a gift for the reader in your life (and/or yourself). As of Nov 2021, you have to be masked to enter, which makes it even more pleasant to browse the selection.
Esther Sellin
Such helpful and welcoming staff! Great options and lovely environment
Joyce Hertrich
I love this bookstore! It is right off the Path train stop. They have a great selection of books and if you can't find what you want in stock they will order it for you.
Celeste Peterson
I really love visiting Word. They have great offerings, and the neighborhood feel is a bonus. The last time I visited because my friend's book came out that same day. The clerk putting out new books was so nice and even displayed her book so sweetly in the front of the store! Not only that but they were more than patient with me browsing through the store and answering all the specific questions I had about product and stock. I purchased postcards, pencils, a journal + so much more beyond just books. I felt very welcomed and I can't wait to return!
Holger Matthies
My favorite bookstore in Jersey City (maybe the only surviving one?). It is sufficiently big and they change the selection frequently enough to almost always find a great book. It's independent and opinionated, with reviews from the helpful staff.
Abhishek Sharma
Very helpful staff. Beautiful book store with a great collection.
Kristin Nolan
I absolutely love the place. Quirky independent book store with tons of activities/book clubs/events. The employees are incredibly warm and friendly. My daughter absolutely loves the Saturday story time. Additionally, the cafe has delicious drinks and snacks. If you are a book lover, go here, support local businesses - you won’t be disappointed!
Guy Zandler BSN, RN
I love this bookstore. It's small and the staff are very friendly and very accommodating. If they don't have what you're looking for they'll order it.
Vaughn Lindquist
Great bookstore with a small town vibe. Full of staff recommendations and nice selections of some of my favorite sections. They even have Gluten Free options at their coffee and snack bar, which I appreciate even more! We like this place so much we make a point to visit it every time we're back in Jersey City and have a loyalty card.
Carly Cohen-Bradshaw
Small bookstore that has a great variety & will happily order whatever they don't have in store. Staff that are always ready to help you find something to read and an interesting assortment of goodies, candles, pens & pencils, cards, notebooks, totes.
Danique Robinson
Everything about this shop is wonderful. The book selection, the cafe, and most of the staff are great. I was a little confused by this older white male who came to the front of the store to terrorize my cousin and I last night with a thinly veiled look of disdain. He could barely contain his animosity and watched us like a hawk as we discussed books and journals. He answered my cousin's question about a journal in a tight-lipped manner as if it cost him a hefty price to do so. In fact, I had just purchased a book from one of his coworkers. Not sure what that out of touch worker was doing there. It was unfortunate but not enough to deter me from visiting again. Perhaps he was severely constipated! If you ever read this, I wish you well and hope you find peace, joy and purpose in the near future. Life shouldn't hurt that much! Feel better! We still enjoyed our visit very much.
Basanthi Pasupuleti
Lovely bookstore in Jersey City, loved the range/category of books. Apart from books they have a nice collection puzzles , games , quirky toys , artist supplies etc .
Noa Vana
Great little shop with a wide selection of adult and kids books. The staff are very friendly, too! Today I ended up spending some time there with my 2.5 year old son, reading books and having vegan desserts, while it was raining outside. We enjoyed it very much!
Zamantha de Gula
It's always nice and warms the heart to see a thriving independent bookstore! I went around the holiday season and it was incredibly packed and lively, but a nice reprieve from the blistering cold outside. Wish I had more time to peruse the stacks and all the little tchotchkes they had on display. Would definitely come back if I'm ever in the area again!
Tyler K
Great staff. There's a couple of them where I've developed an inside joke type of friendly banter with. Others have also helped greatly with book selections. (IE I had gone in once looking for Franz Kafka shorts. Person checking me out told me about the more extensive collection they had in stock that I had completely missed seeing. Ended up buying that instead of the one I initially picked up.)
Dhana Shorey
This was a quaint, cozy bookstore I have never been to before. The staff was so nice, and I found a book I'm excited to start reading.
Jay Nickols
Literally my favorite bookstore in NJ. Lovely staff and always new and cool books, events, and all kinds of knickknacks
Andre Cotto (Trustdre)
Love the selection of books. Just wish it was bigger, and more books. My boys like the Manga section but would love a bigger selection.
Alex Popko
Went there for the first time today. I love the wide variety of books that they have and the various sections, for example what has been popular in the city. I also like that they have different monthly book groups. Also a nice variety of other items for purchase (candles, cards, etc).
Sandeep Ranganathan
Word cafe is a gem of a place located in Downtown JC on Newark Avenue. While it's a book-store/cafe/gift shop it's as valuable a business as the multiple glowing night-life venues located in the neighborhood.
Some of the most memorable highlights of this place
- There's a cute little cafe in the second half of the shop that serves brilliant coffee, croissants and a bunch of home-made organic food items.
- The greeting cards are absolutely adorable. I've come here to pick a card for almost every special occasion ranging from "Happy Birthdays" to "All the bests" and "Valentines Days". The best part about them is the quirky messages/ visuals on the front side followed by space to write your own sweet message
- The store holds a vast collection of books of all genres as well as other gift items such as candles, mementos and so on
pro tip : If you create an account with the shop, they do let you exchange items within 24 hours of purchase.
J.C. needs more of such businesses :)
George E. Krebs Jr.
A very quaint and inviting place, snuggled in a clean and lively neighborhood.
Here you'll find a friendly and knowledgeable staff ready to serve you a wonderful cup of coffee, or assist you in finding a good book.
This cafe/bookstore is impeccably clean inside and outside. (I enjoy the outside seating).
I highly recommend, and give it 5 stars!
Arthur Velwest
As the only book store in jersey city I'm glad word isn't just stopping there, they have a lot of fun events and get togethers happening every week, and are about as inclusive as any of the great stores on Newark Avenue. Not the best selection, but will order out for anything you need. I get most of my books here and are pretty satisfied with them. Five stars!
Sonali N
Decent place, ok-ish collection of books. Has a seating for about 10-12 people so be sure to grab a place quickly if you are going on weekend or at peak hours. You can buy a coffee, cookie and do some relaxed reading here. Would have given a 4 star if it wasn't for the music they were playing which was so not conducive to reading.
Nikki Vail
This shop is the quintessential neighborhood indie bookstore. It has a ton of character, great selection of gifts for nerdy book lovers, and hosts frequent events. Word definitely makes the neighborhood feel special. I can't give a full five stars because the actual book selection is a bit limited, but still a great spot to hang out in downtown JC.
John Norton
Everyone here is very helpful. Today I needed a particular book and they not only looked for it online, but had a copy in stock!!! I am so happy that we have such a great local book store.😊📚 …
Tenny Munro
It is a really awesome book store for people of all ages. They have little books for kids and big book for adults. They have a built in Cafe. They also sell, calendars, toys, planners, pins, bookmarks, and cards as well as a great selection of books. On some days they have famous athours come in for meet and greets.
Karyna Canchani
Used to love getting books from here back when I had an obsession w/ stranger things and had to get a school related book, I would come here, it's good if you want world books, but if you want faith-based books, might want to look elsewhere, considering that many books that I try to look for online at their website - can't be ordered. Will still be coming here for school related books, cooking, and books regarding race - but it's quite upsetting that faith-based books aren't able to be purchased in the way that other books are.
Hill Bill
This bookstore is a truly great spot to stop by and browse. The atmosphere is pleasant and cozy, the staff is helpful, and there is even a nice seating section and mini cafe. Could not recommend more.
Craig Andersen
I bought a book that my 6th grader needed to read for school. It was the same price and much more convenient than Amazon. I called, they put it aside and had it ready for me to pick up. The staff was super friendly and helpful on the phone. I picked up a cappuccino at their coffee bar while there. Its nice to actually be asked if you need help from a knowledgeable staff and to support a local business. I plan to go here first when I need a book.
Margaret DeVico
My husband and I go to Word often, usually with our one year old daughter. It's a great place to grab a coffee and hang out for a bit, browse books, and let the baby roam about. Excellent selection of books for children and adults, plus a wide variety of other items (greeting cards, candles, tote bags). Oh and definitely sign up for the rewards program!
Clare Burke
Local book store, clean setting, friendly staff, nice assortment of books for a small store.
Jesse P. Pollack
Awesome bookstore/cafe. Situated in an area of Jersey City that shuts down on certain days of the week to allow for street festivals, this shop is the perfect place to walk in, grab a book, a coffee, and a snack, and then head outside to a table to enjoy your read while soaking in some local live music. Very clean and well-organized, and the staff is incredibly kind, courteous, and knowledgeable. They often host local and famous authors for signing events and Q&As, so be sure to check those out as well. A real breath of fresh air.
Partha Palit
Located in the pedestrian mall outside Grove street it is centrally located. Nice selection and knowledgeable staff make it a great place to go browse and buy books. Have been going there for a couple of years now and my 8 year old loves to browse and read books there.
Frank Deste
Cool place cool books exceptional location bad part if you are not (and I repeat) not a downtown yuppie you are treated differently. Like you do not belong in their little bookstore or even worse like in their universe! Again social skills and personal interactions are a must for any businesses to survive!
Kevin Shipp
A good selection of authors and titles, but I'm always concerned about pricing. Not that books are too expensive, rather are the costs competitive with Amazon? I hate the idea that one day soon, all of my book purchases will be done only online, because brick and mortar book stores just don't exist anymore. A depressing thought.
Michael Regier
Excellent independent bookstore (before the rearrangement); great Americano! Try a lavender Americano, it may change your world. The Jersey City store was rearranged and appears to be on the family friendly end of things - unfortunate change given the mix of books that the store had about 2 years ago. The change send to have dinner that location well; it is usually busy with young families. The vibe is independent bookstore meets the suburbs, with a dash of too cool elitism.
Talie Diamond
Word is curated well with fun events for the community. I often go to get baby books as gifts, and they have cute odds and ends to go with them. Also, that cafe is excellent.
Takako Asaka
small local book store. It's always good to have a book store in your local area while everything started to be digitized. warm cozy feeling, they have a bood reading community so that there is a chance to interact with people, and nice cafe is inside too.
Vinicius Alves Hanada
I am not sure how customer service can be better than what WORD does. I was looking for some not-so-frequently printed mangas and the staff was keeping me up-to-date whenever a volume would arrive! many kudos!
Gabby Creery
Makes JC a better place to live and be. Everything is better with books.
Lewis Maddox
It's an actual bookstore. It's probably the only one left in the city. It's a really nice place to grab a coffee and read a book. Ok manga selection, but that doesn't actually surprise me. There's kind of an intersectional feminist vibe here but it's nothing too over the top of that's not your thing, it shouldn't deter you from going by any means. Shop locally
Kyle Taylor
Cool little bookstore, great atmosphere, quiet little place to work.
Delmeshia Haynes
I get all of my nieces their books here! On my last visit I took the eldest with me, she was in from out of town. It was a challenge navigating the space as they had a Trivia night set up that made it near impossible to access the books without tripping on the feet of those seated, or getting stuck behind the book shelves. Not fun. I see they expanded their offerings to sell body products which is odd, but ok. I'd love a wider selection of books + comics by Black, Caribbean authors/poets like Nayyirah Waheed to name one, but I'm sure they're working towards a wider range of diversity.
shafmay
Such a cute book store. I miss going to these!! They have unique learning games for kids and good space in the back of the store to hang out..no to mention good coffee 😊 …
Darren Jones
Nicest and most helpful staff you’ll get in Jersey City. No contest.
Lydia Irving
A wonderful local independent bookstore. Staff are knowledgeable and helpful. Lots of in store events and excellent selection. Anything can be ordered if they don’t have it on hand.
Rachel Emmet
I was a little hesitant when they showed up all fancy from BK on Newark ave but these people are Mega-Lovely!! Fun selections, great recommendations, and most importantly sweet people devoted to JC. Everyone is generally chatty and friendly in a way I wish people at the strand were. P.S. thanks be to whomever recommended 'Age of Wonder' by Richard Holmes it blew my mind - recommend me more like that/marry me!
Jasser Dominguez
Every negative review you read about this store is completely false. Don't let the 4.5 fool you as I can say for myself that this is an absolute 5. Great service, lots of books (Got Game of Thrones and Clash of Kings from George R. R. Martin), super friendly employees and a it's locates in a nice area. If you are in the area I would deeply reccomend going to this one.
Jasser Dominguez.
Rob Jelinski
Cute, modern bookstore surrounded by murals in the heart of the Jersey City Art District
Eric Shaw
Very helpful and friendly staff. They have a decent selection of books in a variety of categories. The staff suggestions are a cute idea and may help you discover something new.
Steven Samuel
This is my home away from home. Even though I ride the staff for not being up on the lastest superhero shows (except Kev), the staff is great. They have become like my little nieces and nephews and I'm sad when they get transferred (like Winta Soulja) or leave.
Isha Somani
Great selection, cute interiors, friendly staff, tiny coffee shop. I could easily spend a lot of time here with my son exploring books.
Oksana Cantrell
This is a tiny small town bookstore that just happens to be located in a big city. It's quaint, has a bathroom, and a few novelty items like "unicorn snot" body lotion. Oh, and books.

A handy neighborhood bookstore located in Hamilton Park in Jersey City. They also have a location in Greenpoint in Brooklyn. While perhaps not the widest selection of books, it still stocks an impressive variety of books. A book lover won't have any issue finding something to read.
