Reviews of Faulkner House Books
Very neat place! It's always so cool when you can visit a place where a famous author penned some of their work. Even cooler that this place then became a bookstore. Its a narrow place, so you can't fit many people in there at once, so keep in mind when you decide to visit that you may have to wait a few minutes to look inside, but it is well worth it. Soldiers Pay was written here and of course you can leave with a copy of the book yourself!
Beautifully kept historical building and bookshop. Only 4 people allowed in at a time, so you may have to wait outside for a bit. Good selection of hardback titles.
Lovely little hole in the wall book store with a curated selection of local authors and local themed books as well as a nice mix of broader genres and current choices. At the time of my visit, there was a 4 person max in the store which as small as it is, that seems appropriate even pre-COVID. Very helpful if you are looking for a new book to jump into.
Faulkner House Bookshop is situated in the writer’s actual residence while living in New Orleans. It’s a small space, but it consists of the exact two rooms in which Faulkner had his study, where he used to work. The bookshop sells new books, lots of local interest publications and poetry. It offers some books signed by authors which the shop manager acquires.
A historical must-see on your New Orleans trip! Amazing curated selection of books. I loved seeing both older titles and modern/more inclusive ones in the same shop. There is a lot of thought that goes into this small collection and it’s certainly worth a stop in. The store is little, so go at an off peak time to ensure you have a leisurely browsing experience! It wasn’t an issue for us, but just as a heads up.
Lots of new books with nicer bindings. A small rare section that is very pricey (seems that the only rare ones they have are very very rare and thus a little higher on the scale). Be prepared to hand over your covered drinks to sit aside whole you shop.
Overall a nice small shop.
If you’re looking for history in New Orleans, you can look right in front of you, and Faulkner House is no different. Stumbled upon it when I was exploring Jackson Square, and I HAD to pay them a visit. It’s an absolutely breathtaking interior with books to the ceiling. I wish I had more time than I did (I was crunched for time) to comb through the titles more, but I’ll definitely come back. It has a well-curated selection and wide range of subjects and titles, from philosophy to New Orleans history, as well as Southern authors (including Faulkner, of course). I was in search of a book about the city’s history and the owner pointed me directly to a thrilling read. Can’t wait to come back and pay another visit.
Whenever I plan a trip to New Orleans, I save my money to specifically purchase books here. Joanne is incredibly well read and I look forward to seeing her, along with the amazing collection they've curated. I always walk away with a backpack full of books I can't find elsewhere.
Great little bookstore. Not a Faulkner fan but I love history and I'm an English major so had to visit. Stopped by twice and got two books I've been looking for but couldn't find. Lots of classic lit.
Such a wonderful little bookshop. Historical, beautifully curated, and with an exceptional bookseller.
We were recommended this book store by one of our guides, and it was spot on!! What a great unique book store which was so unexpected in the French Quarter!! Not the normal tourist location!! Great finds for the book lover!!!
I loved this bookstore. It was well curated and had a super friendly owner. Highly recommended for new books ..especially fiction. A great experience.
Great little shop on Pirates alley next to St. Louis Cathedral. This is the house Faulkner lived while residing in New Orleans. Mostly fiction, literature, and poetry books along with locally themed books as well.
Although on the small size, it is packed with books and nicely organized. It is a charming place and the lady at its helm is very nice and helpful. A veritable Treasure Island in Pirate's Alley.
The quaintest bookshop I've been to in a while with such a friendly bookseller. Great place to pick up a Faulkner NOLA souvenir to remember my trip.
This is cool historic little book store that makes a great brief refuge from the bustle and noise of the French quarter. It’s very well maintained, the staff is kind and knowledgeable and the small selection of books is well chosen and has a nice variety. Pop in to see where Faulkner wrote his first novel and see some of his first editions!
This is a beautiful little bookstore located behind St. Louis cathedral. There is a lovely lady in charge. She is well aware of Faulkner's work and literature in general. I intend to keep going back to New Orleans and stopping by this charming place.
Excellent bookstore and manager/owner! Atmospheric and such a great selection of books! The shop is always on my recommendation lists to friends travelling to New Orleans!
Very cool bookstore in the Quarter, great selection of books, very cool location. Perfect place to duck out of the madness of Jackson Square for an afternoon literary browse.
Not a large collection but it's a small space. Fantastic atmosphere. Definitely a gem hidden in the French Quarter
Small unique book store. Lots to see and friendly staff.
A very very cool spot to visit! I heard about this store on Anthony Bourdain's show and knew I had to go. Plan to spend a little time here, as there are many rare, first editions to look through. I bought a book by Faulkner to get the authentic experience!
A lovely little bookstore, absolutely worth a wander in to see what treasure you can find.
Ah, the site and smell of books... in a house once owned by William Faulkner, on a back-alley named ... Pirate’s Alley...
Go. Browse the poetry section. You won’t be disappointed.
Very beautiful bookstore. Been around for 27 years. Nice selection of books. Small and lovely. The owner is very sweet and willing to make recommendations.
So quaint, adorable and historic! Was able to get my two voracious readers each a Faulkner classic and a nice canvas bag as a gift from our visit. Staff was helpful, courteous and kind.
Really neat shop. The curator is very helpful and I recommend a subscription to get a few books that work for you.
Such a gorgeous shop! Had a lot of fun browsing the selection and picking up some new books.
Small but cute. We have kids and there kid section was one shelf. Fun bookstore but selection is very small. Good place to pop in just to look.
Really pretty bookstore! Helpful lady and had a great time browsing.
Such a cool bookstore and of course used to be Faulkners House. Sits back in Pirates Alley and should pop in and take a look. Huge selection of books and the man working there was very nice and very knowledgeable.
Floor to ceiling books and the Faulkner connection-- old boarding house where he wrote his 1st novel. Always signed editions, tucked away in Pirate's Alley
Fantastic selection - books I find nowhere else, very knowledgeable staff
Great little book store in Pirates alley. Only 4 customers allowed at a time during these covid days.
I was lucky enough to be the only person in the bookstore on the day I visited. Joanne helped me pick out 3-4 books, and I bought them all.A fabulous place for book lovers. Mask up and show your Vax card for entry.
Great ole bookstore. Truly a dying breed for book lovers. I have found some true treasures here.
This is a pretty unique bookstore for its history and its layout/design. If you're into poetry, it's a must-visit.
Great little book shop tucked into pirates alley! Friendly and cozy atmosphere and consistent covid-19 precautions, not to mention the array of books to browse through. Will be back for more!
Charming, beautiful shop with a kind and thoughtful staff. The books are incredibly well curated, and it’s no doubt a reader runs this shop.
This place is fantastic, charming and well stocked. The staff is very helpful with both phone and in person orders. If you are looking for something they will go out of their way to find what you need, I have never been disappointed. When I first found out that they do not have any real pirates working at the place I was a little let down, but they do have a kitten who lives upstairs and she is currently at peek cuteness, so drop by soon.
This is an attractive and well-organized bookstore, housed in a rather small space that was once an apartment rented by William Faulkner. It’s a lovely place, like a bookstore you might find in some quirky but well-made independent film. There are rare, signed (and therefore expensive) editions... as well as more affordable (but just as unique) volumes for sale. The members of the staff are knowledgeable and friendly. I found several interesting books... more than I intended to buy when I entered! I look forward to a return visit.
Fantastic selection of books with some very nice editions and bindings. A true gem of a small independent bookstore!
Such a cutie place! Everyone there was so helpful and they have a great selection
Great atmosphere, quiet, quaint and a solid selection. Store owner was personable and very helpful with recommendations! Definitely an experience to be had if you are visiting the French Quarter!
If you enjoy reading some books and want to get your hands on novels we all gre up with, head here. It was a nice little shop and very clean. The lady working that evening was nice and let us stay longer than the store was open. It's a neat little shop just to stop in even if you dont buy a book.
Had such a lovely time chatting it up about books and the history of the building with the wonderful person working (1/2/21) and felt very safe the whole time thanks to the limited capacity. We walked out with a classic as well as a Faulkner title, of course. Definitely a stop worth bragging about!
Nice little shop, super cozy. Good selection of books (not great, not incredibly varied, but good) some good finds
A great atmosphere in a beautiful old store. The floor to ceiling bookshelves and lighting makes this place an unforgettable trip.
Definitely a must stop while at New Orleans! Very cute bookstore!
Cute little book store with golden history. Absolutely loved visiting the place as a tourist of NOLA. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, only two people are allowed at a time.
Delightful, hidden historic little gem.
Hoary and new, wizened and fresh, comforting and thoughtful.
This is a good place.
Nice bookstore. Too small for my like but not bad. Nicely organize, good and diverse selection. The person in charge was really attentive. A must if you are a book lover.
Beautiful historical bookstore with an astounding collection, but pretty cramped and hard to see anything. Ended up just perusing because it’s hard to tell what’s what. Definitely worth a visit, but if you’re looking to actually find a book, best to visit another places.
Well-organized, small but doesn't feel cramped (though they packed a lot of titles in there). The first editions/collectible case is definitely worth checking out, & they have some cool ephemera on the walls. There was something a little off-putting for me -- I think it was because there was no music playing? To be fair I was with my mom who is super loud so background noise helps mask her silliness. :D worth a stop, even if you're not a Faulkner fan (I am not).
Tiny bookstore with a rich history! Loved browsing in here.
This is probably my favorite bookstore of all time! The woman who runs it ( Suzanne?-please forgive me-I always forget names) is a devoted reader. Every so often I go in the store and ask her to recommend her favorite reads. She loads me up with as many as I desire. I am NEVER disappointed. The bookstore is gorgeous, with handpicked books that appeal to many different tastes. It is the "Magic Emporium" of books for me-always something unique, captivating and beautiful waiting to be discovered. Ask the "blonde woman"-she knows her books!
I never caught the owner's name but she was very friendly and made some great recommendations to my wife on what to get based off of her likes. Really cool store and tucked away in an alley off Royal. Highly recommend stopping in here whether on vacation or local.
Best bookstore I've ever been to, right in the very heart of the French Quarter. I buy a Faulkner book every time I visit, and I like to imagine where in the house he was sitting when he wrote a few of his books. It's fairly small, but you will find exactly what you're looking for here (unless you're into the vampire romance genre. This ain't your spot.)
If you want to read what was written in the house, the following books are usually stored front and center:
1. Soldiers' Pay (His first major work)
2. Mosquitoes (set in NOLA)
If you're a fan of poetry, the back hallway is your spot. There are 2 full bookshelves packed with all the poetry you could ever want.
Then go next door and get some absinthe 😬
I especially liked the photographs, talking to the director of the museum about the history of the place, and of course, the beautiful books.
What an adorable book store. Worth a stop just to see Faulkner's house, but the bookseller has curated a fabulous collection for you to peruse made up of classics, new, and interesting titles. Didn't buy anything this time, but I had to restrain myself.
I have been to Faulkner Books twice. It is a gem. The place is small, but the selection is choice. You can, of course, find Faulkner. For a tourist like me, it was a pleasure to find innumerable volumes of fiction and nonfiction from and about New Orleans, most of which I had not known about. But you will find literary treasures of many kinds. Whoever is at the desk will be friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. If you like literature and find yourself in New Orleans, you owe it to yourself to stop in.
This exceptional bookshop is a must for anyone ready to dive into the wonderful world of Southern writing.
Incredible place. A small shop, but a great selection, chosen with love and care. And a lot of knowledge. The helpful sales woman seems to have read everything in the store.
Friendly staff, amazing books, wonderful history!
A very small bookshop but the lady who runs it is very helpful and kind. Worth seeing if you really like books!
Primarily retail, Faulkner's offers a healthy selection of rare and first edition volumes (mostly of local literati). On display are letters and photographs from many of these same local authors, and the staff is professional yet warm. Excellent poetry selections.
Those who work here at the shop are extremely well- informed , as well as being both interested AND interesting New Orleanians. This shop has a vast selection of the very best reading material in the subject of New Orleans, which is an uncommonly rare find for those who seek the thrills of truth!
Great selection off books the one about delphin lalaurie Is a great spook!!!! I had an fun time browsing I wish I could buy all the books♥️
Books are list price so a little more expensive if you're used to Amazon or B&N but the place is absolutely beautiful and the bookcase is the most gorgeous I've ever seen. Beautiful place to visit and shop.
Fantastic book store with a great selection. Staff was very friendly. A great party of Louisiana history.
A small, single room shop. This store has books by the bigger names of southern writing and some nice classics. Most book are new but they do have some expensive older books.
Literary landmark, worlds best bookshop, worldclass location!
Amazing! The owner was so sweet and clearly very passionate/knowledgeable about books and the history of the place. She had lots of anecdotes and recommendations that were very much appreciated!
Really extensive collection of books, for a compact space. Very knowledgeable staff and I had a very pleasant experience.
Faulkner house books is a beautiful little bookshop with one of the best curated collections of literature I’ve seen!
Most bonkers bookstore I've ever been in. SOOOOO many books all over. I was able to find a great takeaway. You could too, but it may take some digging
Perfect and a hidden gem
I found a book that I had been wanting for weeks! To be in Faulkner's home was truly amazing.
Beautiful historical site. Great poetry collection and set of Faulkner originals, but far too small to include much of a selection of titles.
Friendly staff. Quality selection of good reads packaged inside an important piece of an American Literary historical landmark. Stop in, browse, purchase.
A cute little book store.
Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Love the history and the book selection! Even have pictures displayed with historical facts and souvenirs.
Small but had a good selection of new and older books. Greeted when I entered. Clean and organized.
A book house with rich history. Would recommend to all book lovers. It's small but very cute.
Tiny bookstore with a well curated selection and great recommendations.
Amazing. Amazing amazing. Go here. Love books? Go here. Like books? Go on. Like the smell of books? Well go on in, silly! Intended to look around, left with two books. Beautiful space even if you're only browsing.
Very well-organized and beautiful books. Selection was fairly small and books were a bit pricey, but definitely was worth a visit.
It was the apartment area that William Falkner had lived in while in New Orleans. It is small but very interesting. The owner was very helpful finding what I wanted.
A tiny bookshop on Pirate's Alley big on literature. Check out the plaque outside honoring Wm Faulkner. Owner Joe DeSalvo and literary expert and manager Joanne Sealy are great.
Cool book store. Good selection of classic literature and literary fiction. Definitely worth spending a little time exploring!
Excellent absinthe and other drinks. Fun, old pirate atmosphere. Did not actually go to the bookstore, just the bar
A fine selection of new fiction of note, mixed with new Orleans history and new Orleans fiction.
Great place, beautiful interior, and friendly staff. Has lots of classics and aesthetically pleasing collection. It's clean and cozy, but just a little too pricey for me.
Small bookstore, but what they lack in diversity of selection they make up for in the quality of their books. Gorgeous collector's editions, first editions, etc, with a focus on Southern literature.
A remarkable bookstore, nicely curated! And, they ship!
Quite a unique place. Interesting history, a great book selection and a place worth taking a picture at. Recommend it fully.
Always a lovely spot to get local author books. The shop is quaint and the lady who runs it is a joy :)
Excellent little book store, tucked away tho. You can walk right by it if your not looking.
Loved the shop!!! Small place filled with bookies😉browsing. You can talk books there and owners read. Yeah!!! …
I always stop in when visiting and always leave with several books I end up thoroughly enjoying! Such a cool, authentic spot.
Best bookstore in the quarter.
Famous writers stop in frequently.
And it's on the first floor of the actual Faulkner home.
All time favorite books store!
One of 4 or 5 small bookstores in the Quarter. This one is my favorite. Friendly staff, small but excellent selection of books.
Beautiful bookstore in the French Quarter in the former home of William Faulkner. A modest collection of Faulkner's works, local writers, fiction and non-fiction.
tiny bookstore in the apartment where faulkner lived. only 12 people can fit in but is a must see. get one faulkner book while there.
Faulkner and southern writers in general. Heavy on the twentieth century. Don't be intimidated, the first editions are behind glass, everything else you can touch.
This is my favorite bookstore in the whole world! I visit New Orleans at least twice a year and make many, long visits to Faulkner House.
An incredibly small book store, but a great piece of history, and stellar curated selection
My favorite bookstore
Small but filled book shop with lots of classics and great help from the woman that worked there
Charming and historical! The woman working marked her favorite passage in the book I bought with a bookmark too!
Amazing book store, the lady who helps us was very knowledgeable and friendly.
The best bookstore in the country! Joann's recommendations are always perfect.
A lovely little bookstore with floor to ceiling shelves crammed full of great literature.
Store was easy to find. Great prices and staff very helpful.
A lot of cool history here. Maximum capacity is 12 people so you might have to wait outside!
Quaint book shop. If you didn't ask for directions you wouldn't find it.
Fun tiny little book store with excellent literary selections.
Neat! Had to stop in and buy a copy of New Orleans Sketches, even though I already owned one, just because.
Knowledgeable and friendly keeper makes up for somewhat limited selection. If you can't find what you came in for chances are you'll come across something new
Cool, small family owned book store. Support local!
Amazing spot to check out and support a unique bookstore.
Rare finds, antiques, new releases, so many things to see. Very helpful shop attendant.
We had apersonal guided tour of Faillner's home as well. And lots of books.
It's a really cute shop and the books are really varied.
A nice little book store, and the owner was friendly.
A blink and you'll miss it hole-in-the-wall place, but it has a treasure trove of books
Enchanting little book shop with a brilliant selection personally picked up by the owner.
Cozy, tall, with an excellently curated collection for such a small place!
Great selection, i love the smell of a book store.
An excellent selection of books all in a place of history.
I wasn't expecting this. If you were looking for a specific book from a local press then go here. Also sort of hard to find.
Very interesting. My daughter thinks it seems like out of a harry potter movie.
Historic location and a terrific selection of books.
Loved this little book shop stop!
You're reading reviews on google, why not read a book?
Quaint, clean, and beautiful. The owner of the shop is a sweet woman and ready to help.
Neat little place. A must see for book lovers.
Wonderful eclectic bookstore. Very helpful proprietor.
Small but very well curated bookstore. Staff is very knowledgeable and helpful.
Best bookstore I’ve ever seen!
Great littl book nook in William Faulkner's New Orleans residence.
Classic. Found a beautiful edition of some Tennessee Williams plays. Like an old friend.
Wow - great bookstore. The best.
Great book selection in William Faulkners living room!
The one regret I have from visiting this store is that I didn't buy a book by William Faulkner.
Love the smell. If you love books you know what I mean.
Best bookstore around. Faulkner’s spirit is proud.
Awesome little place off the path. You forget you're in New Orleans, once you step inside.
A book sanctuary, and a place of quiet and beauty. Highly recommended.
The store owner is knowledgeable and the dog is an added bonus.
Very friendly and good place of you want fun
Very nice bookstore to visit...
