I just returned to Milwaukee after almost 10 years spent living abroad, and I was beyond ecstatic to see that this place was still open and going strong. Sad to see no cats hanging around its stacks, though. I left with a huge pile of lovely old books, so I can't complain too much!

Magical place coming out of the dreams of a bookworm. I truly and utterly loved this place. So many books on so many genres and lots and lots of hidden gems like paintings and pictures. If you are a book enthusiast and love a good old-fasioned book store with a care free cat this is the place for you. I was mesmerized by how amazing and fun this place was.

Listen, I love this store. It has the charming old school bookstore vibe. But it is crowded. The aisles are narrow to accommodate all the books in such a small place. The staff mostly will let you browse how you want however, it is much more difficult to find a particular book than your chain bookstores and often popular books don't stay on the shelf long. Don't let that change your mind about checking out the store. Definitely do, the staff is charming (so also the cats) and the store really is cozy and has a huge selection of books, cassette tapes, CDs, DVDs, VHS, and vinyls. Make sure you don't stop in the front but browse the whole store. Never know what you'll find. (Pictured is my most recent score)

I walked in on a whim to warm up on a cold day. From the outside it looked like a small shop but inside you find rooms and rooms of floor to ceiling books. Additionally, there's a cat. Which makes it fully a legit bookstore. If you want to smell that perfect old book smell, and find great priced used books, this is where to go. Also easily accessible via the Hop streetcar.

I went to this bookstore on a whim while on the way to dinner and I could not have been more impressed! They have a large selection that you are able to find your way around easily with how thoughtfully organized it is. I was able to ship my books to my home, rather than carry them around and make the trip back with them, for a reasonable price. The books arrived faster than expected and were clearly packed with care. I will be returning to this bookstore!

Soooooo many books to choose from, but stools and ladders in nearly every aisle, it's very tempting to look on the upper shelves. If you find a good book, there's also stools or chairs nearby. Great find!

This is my favorite bookshop in Downtown Milwaukee, as it is one of the only ones. Most of my books are from here, and as far as used books go, they are good quality! It's not the cleanest - they have cats which make me feel a bit stuffy - but it does not deter me from going. I usually get 3-4 books each time I shop.

There're alot of books. Many books. Many bookstores have many books, though, we found it to be surprisingly well-curated and organized. We found and grabbed up everything from classic Dickens to 80's copies of The Baby-Sitters Club.

We happened upon this store tonight. If you haven't been here it is a must visit. Very, very reasonably priced books and the curator can take you to exactly what you are looking for. The books soar from floor to ceiling height with ladders abound to enjoy books. All we can say is wow. This is what we always dreamed a book a store to be.

The books were well organized and the sections well labeled. They have a large selection of books. For the larger sections, large letters were hung on the bookshelves that proved very helpful in making it much easier to find the books I was looking for before my parking meter ran out. The prices were fairly reasonable. There's also an adorable cat.

They have such a large number of books, cds, records, and DVDs! It will take several trips to feel like I can take it all in! A great place to browse by interest, or search for a specific title. They have lots of kids books, too! Great place, cute bookstore cat, and nice employees.

This is a great bookstore. HUGE with tons of used books. Well curated with classics new & old, popular and less common. Also movies and music. The aisles are rather narrow but that's just because there is so much material. Our only bummer is that we were hoping to see a variety of cats milling about but there was only one ol' timer there that day but he was friendly. :-)

What is more charming than an old-fashioned bookstore with packed shelves, little nooks and crannies, and cats roaming the aisles? Well Downtown Books has all that and an amazing selection of used books. I’m especially pleased with their selection of classics—you can find many different editions and styles of the same book. I’ve found their prices to be reasonable and the books to be in good condition. The staff/owner is really nice and struck up conversation about one of the authors of a book I was purchasing. He also glued the spine of one of the books that was coming lose for no charge. Most recently I came with a group of friends, and we all found books we liked even though we have different tastes. Come here when you have a lot of time to browse—it’s so fun!

Cool bookstore with a huge selection of books. The owner has a cat who you can find roaming around the shelves and carts. I got a couple books for decent prices. If you are expecting to get garage sale quality books for a quarter, this place isn't for you. The books are much nicer and are about half the retail price. If you are a book lover, you could spend all day here browsing around.

We spent 2 days in Milwaukee & 2 days in Chicago, my son had his own "vacation" money & this was the ONLY place he spent it! 9 books for $50 & we were only there for 30 minutes. I would need at least 3 hours to look through the vast collection of treasures offered. We will be back!

It's easily one of my favorite places in Milwaukee. It has a great selection of used books for really reasonable prices. My go to is science fiction (SF) and the cashiers are also really into SF and we usually have a nice conversation about the book I picked out!

Towering shelves of old books and thin walkways between them all give a wonderful atmosphere of an old library one only sees in movies. Most of the books have the beautiful antiquated smell and stained pages to mark their age. The prices are usually half or a quarter of the average book and best of all, there are also cats ready to be pet at your convenience.

Love, love, absolutely love this place! Anytime I've needed or wanted a book. I've found it here first! I needed the sequel to Catch-22 ( Closing Time) and found it! And all for a reasonable cheap price. Also found a collection of short stories by F. Scott Fitzgerald I really wanted! Awesome no pressure atmosphere! Hope your not allergic to cats! Friendly cats perched among the books follow you around just making sure you find your perfect book!

Edit: RIP Milo :( This store is a hidden gem in downtown Milwaukee. The store is comfortable and has many places to sit down and read. I love that you can buy the art on the walls and sometimes I stop by just to see Milo, who loves nothing more than walking through the store and sitting in customers laps. I make special mention of him because he is the sweetest little cat and an excellent reading companion.

I love popping into this store on my lunch hour. Merlin (the fat orange cat) is always there to greet you on the chair in front. There are so many books available here and they're always a good price. There is also a great children's section and the books are usually around $3.00. I wish they were a bit more organized and curated specific sections with a little more thought (like the best sellers). I'm glad we have this wonderful store downtown!

I actually love this used bookstore because they have everything. Some sections are small, but they do HAVE what you're looking for! Very reasonable prices as well and staff is nice and they know where everything is for the most part. If you also have an amount of books you'd like to get rid of, they do a pick up service which is great! I believe you can also get store credit as well if you're going to be buying books from them anyways. :)

Gem of a bookstore, hidden in plain sight right on Broadway in downtown Milwaukee, just off the Hop and near the Public Market. Considering the sheer volume of books, comics, albums (plus a small number of CDs and DVDs) I thought it was organized extremely well with shelves almost reaching the ceiling. The organization scheme reminded me of Half Price Books’. Prices seemed reasonable - not shockingly high or low. Staff are very friendly and the 2 sweet bookstore cats add to the ambiance. Cash and cards accepted, clean bathroom for customers. All around great place.

There is a large selection of books in a variety of genres, plus the books were well organized to find what you are looking for. The guys working were also nice and helpful. Huge store, Awesome collection of books, rows and rows, total dream land if you like to read. Staff has always been helpful and friendly, always helps me find books. Also there is a pair of really cute cats that wander around:) Never tried selling books there, but recommend if you are looking to buy, be warned you'll spend hours there.

Amazing ginormous used bookstore, I've never seen anything like it. They also carry CDs, DVDs, VHS, and comics. Prizes are crazy reasonable and they sell small pieces of art work that are up for display at the end of each bookshelf. Also some cats are sleeping around the place which is a huge plus for me.

Found this amazing place by accident the other week. I was very surprised to find that the inside is quite larger than it seemed. The books are organized quite well and are guarded by 2 cats, THAT ARE FRIENDLY. The prices for the books, as well as the art hanging on the walls, are quite nice. 10/10 could do again.

We found a gardening book that was the subject of searching for some.time prior to our visit, and 2.classic cookbooks as well. And the owner was very accomodatinh. Great used book store. I've always found what I'm looking for. And the books are in great shape. For me I'm always looking for hard cover books with the dust jackets intact. I've managed to find a few first prints by favorite authors, and even a few that are out of print. My kids also find the books they're looking for- Harry Potter for the olders-, picture books for the youngers, comic books for every one! They have a great deal of books on just about every subject and genre you can think of- it can be a little intimidating when you you first walk in. The place packed with books! Well organized, but absolutely packed ceiling to floor- if you know what you want the staff can look it up and tell you if they have it, or direct you to where it would be. Plus they buy books! Which is great with the kids books. Once they out grow something or decide they don't care for it, you can just take it in and get cash or store credit and pick out something else- it's really a great place if you're a book hunter or a thrifty parent such as myself. Definitely check it out!!

Good used bookstores a re going the way of independent bookstores, that is they are getting very hard to find. Downtown Books is one of 2 great used bookstores in Milwaukee, and it has never disappointed me. They were formerly housed in an old dank building that had more character than their current location, but the books are just as good.

Worth searching for a parking space during the current street construction. Going in looking for specific books and getting lost browsing the stacks is the perfect way to spend a morning. I went in to find some cheap comics. They, like most ppl now that don't know much about comics had them a bit pricey. I found a Hawkman #2 with writing on the cover. It was $10, but I thought hey I'll support a small business. When I took it out to read it had major water damage & is virtually worthless. That being said it did have vast bookshelves of used books. So I'm sure if you need something that's hard to find they could probably help.
