Reviews of The Iliad Bookshop
My favorite book store in all of Los Angeles. Massive collection. Well organized. Cute kitties. Cozy couches. A lot of scenes for shows were filmed here too. There’s such a vintage vibe to it. It’s an experience just walking through here. I LOVE this place.
Hidden gem! They have boxes of free books and DVDs at the back door. Inside there are rooms and rooms of inexpensive books. I only met Apollo, what a sweet cat! Zeus was probably off wooing unsuspecting mortals.
Hunting for books is the best part of book shopping. But the staff is what really made this place. Two gentlemen helped me throughout my adventure and they were so helpful and kind; couldn’t recommend this place enough. Got to love that cat too!
Always been one of my favorite places in the world since growing up right down the street in North Hollywood. Always loved the awesome murals outside in the front and back and all the awesome work they put into making the inside fun to explore and great to sit and enjoy while you're looking for books which they have the absolute best selection of at good prices. But my favorite thing about them is every day there are free books outside and you are allowed 10 free books! It's hit and miss but more times then not I have grabbed brand new great books from the free pile and it continues to be one of my favorite life moments when I score on their free books! Will never stop coming here as long as I'm in Noho, this will be my main bookstore. 💯💯💖💖😊🙏
Such a whimsical place to explore. The moment you enter you are greeted by the friendly staff. They are very welcoming, nice, and very helpful. I enjoyed my experience shopping here. They have a great collection of books and they all go by category and in alphabetical order. They have a section full of fiction books on sale for $1-$2, so cheap. This place is fun to visit. A wonderful place to relax and buy a good book.
If you can't find SOMETHING at The Illiad then you aren't trying.
A large selection of $2-$4 books take up the center of the main room and there are wall-to-wall bookcases full of stuff that you would be hard pressed to find outside of an online store.
I go for their two aisles of graphic novels. It's rare for me not to find something that I've either never seen before or something I missed at some point.
They also have two cats that live on the premises!
And seating! Which was not available during the height of Covid.
I don't know if they've reopened their bathroom.
ALSO, there are plenty of free books just outside the entrance. If you're looking for a textbook on Obstetrics or a fifteen year old copy of Gourmet then check out the boxes!
On a trip to visit a family member in Los Angeles, April 9 2014, he took us to this book store. We absolutely loved it!! We bought many books. Since they were heavy, I put them in my small carry on, but had wheels, luggage. We still talk about this place. We want to go back!
Been looking for a used bookstore, with what feels like bever ending rows, and well organization and this was it! It's a great store, with friendly staff and now one, but TWO cats. Definitely a new favorite.
Great place for collectors both new and seasoned. I purchased several books every year for myself and others. Good place to start. Knowledgeable staff, very helpful.
My favorite bookstore in Southern California, hands down. Not many like it anywhere anymore. Lots of breadth, affordable prices, a comfy space any book lover can enjoy spending hours in.
Great place to search for books. One of the beautiful aspects of visiting a used bookstores is finding books that you didn't think you'd need or want to read.
these folks helped me sort out international shipping for an out of print book i’d been trying to find for AGES! they were easy to communicate with and my book arrived in excellent condition. thank you so much!
AMAZING bookshop! Massive selection and everything was so affordably priced. The cats were also adorable! They have a large sci fi/fantasy section and many beautiful classic books!
Amazing used bookstore. Totally worth the drive! The 2 super soft friendly cats we the cherry on top. Lots of graphic novels, anime, art books....could spend a whole day here!!
Great variety of used books. Well organized and great prices! This bookstore has everything you could want including the old book smell (not overwhelming) & 2 darling cats Apollos & Zeus! What more could one ask for! 💕 …
Best used book store any where. Every year I visit LA for vacation I always make the trip out to pick up some books and get some quality time with Zeus and Apollo.
Their used book selection is almost overwhelming. Was able to find a reasonably priced author signed edition of a mystery novel I was looking for, and a cookbook from 1936 with some very interesting (humorous) recipes in it. Staff very helpful. Two friendly store cats. Parking in back accessible from Chandler Blvd.
The spot. Highly recommend. Don't let the cat out! It's quiet, air conditioned, and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. If they don't have it they will know, it's incredible how well they know the inventory. Great for gifts, prices very very reasonable. Bathroom is clean. Bought some old giant bible s for my dad on Christmas. Uploaded pics for you.
Not only the best used bookstore in LA, but one of my absolute favorites in the country. Easily 60% of my hundreds of paperback books came from this place.
Seems like the last of its kinda. I love it here, from the Magical Entrance, the smell of books, and the cute kittys roaming the aisles. Books are fairly priced, all 10 billion of them, well organised as well as a free book section always in front. It's been about 10 years, but I have sold books here to, it was a quick and pleasant experience.
Such a beautiful bookstore. I went there today for the first time in about two years due to me living in Cincinnati now, unfortunately they were closed. You bet I'll be coming in tomorrow though. Always loved this gem of a place for amazing reads. Five stars everyday!
Very cozy and quiet place. There is a nice reading room. The staff is very friendly. Will be returning soon. :)
Absolutely love this bookstore I went yesturday for the first time and fell in love. The staff were very helpful they knew their shop very well. Really nice. The 2 kitties were also cute and friendly the golden one let me pet him/her. I found a book I was looking for for years great find. The young adult section is huge, it has its own corner with couches to read at. Very organized l, all the books are placed in genre and in alphabetical order by author last name. Ohh Oh and they have their own bathroom. Prices are reasonable. I bought 4 books for under $20 That's a deal for good conditioned books. Will definitely go back.
I found coffee table books .
All in beautiful condition.
All about Hollywood.
Ofcourse any used book has a have a lazy cat.
Took the attached picture.
Can't miss this treasure.
One of my new favorite places. You can find books on everything there.
Literally one of the cutest bookshops I've visited! It truly has a homey vibe with two cute little cats you can see skittering and napping around the store. This place has a great selection, and I'd recommend that all book-lovers visit at least once.
Great scifi and fantasy artist book selection and cats! In one place!! What more could I desire in a store?
Wine and coffee would make it perfection.
Love this place. Both new and used books, very low priced and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. The environment is warm and inviting and they even have two cats that roam around! Apollo and Zeus(:
I’m a big bookstore aficionado, whenever I visit a new city I try to go to as many used/independent bookstores as I can and I can truly say Iliad is one of the best i’ve been to. It’s the perfect bookstore to me, vast, amazing selection, unique inventory, you can find what you need, but also come across things you’d never find anywhere else, well organized, but still has that loose feeling, not constricting and stale like one of those bookstores in shopping malls that only sells brand new books. The staff was friendly and helpful and there’s cats running around which only adds to the charm. Left with a huge pile of art books. I hope Iliad never changes. It’s a rare gem.
Loved it! I also love the sweet kitties that live there. I can only imagine that they live the best life imaginable being able to roam the books
Great place to spend a couple of hours exploring. Great prices, was able to buy 10 books: hardcovers, reference texts, and more, for less than 50 dollars. Very cozy atmosphere and there's 2 cats walking around checking up on things. Good amount of parking in back and there's some free books out front in boxes.
The handmade tall wood bookshelves, the inviting outside detailed artwork, comfortable reading areas, and a wide selection of books in a surprisingly large store. The house cats make you feel right at home. This is a one of a kind, very special book store!
Favorite bookstore, hands down. They have so many options and rotating books. Their prices crush Barnes and Noble deals and even though the books are used, the ones they sell are always in great condition.
I’ve bought all of the Game of Thrones books here, Ready Player One, tons of self-help books, Psychology books, and more.
Lots of hidden gems in their discount piles by the front desk. If you like books you don’t be disappointed going here!
Great place to hunt around for book treasure + several very friendly cats
Really cool hidden gem. I mean a huge bookstore with really nice people, 2 cats living there and some awesome treasures to be found.
I pick through their free stuff outside in boxes most of the time. Nice bookstore though. They got some good art books. Looking for a specific large book on Bosch, but haven't found it yet.
Big beautiful traditional used bookstore, too rare an animal today. Stacks from the floor to ceiling, ladders for easy access, super helpful staff. Two big friendly Tom cats roam about--be careful upon entering, they're escape artists!
Huge sections on the arts, cinematography, history, fiction, and just about every subject you can imagine. It is truely a pleasure to wander about here perusing the variety of knowledge and thought. From affordable to rare, many options for the browsing reader.
Just about a flat half mile walk from the North Hollywood Metro Red Line Station.
This is simply the best bookstore- knowledgeable and friendly employees, amazing selection of books that is always changing, two shop cats descended from Greek gods, and an atmosphere that is welcoming and perfect for someone in search of a book. Who knows?- in your roaming you may uncover a first edition, rare find or just that paperback you've been dying to curl up with! I spend more money here than I should and my shelves at home are BURSTING, but I keep going back for more!
Delightful bookstore--with cats! This place is exactly what makes bibliophiles fall in love with books, shopping for books, and communing with other book lovers.
Amazing. Staff was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. They have so many books! The prices can't be beat. We spent nearly two hours in here.
So many used books and for a good price. Boxes of free books outside too. Very cute friendly cats inside. Lovely environment.
A thoroughly enchanting bookstore with a pleasant Bohemian feel, they have two beautiful and very sociable cats to visit as well as any book you might ever want.
Awesome place to pick up books you've been meaning to read for a great price. Also you can donate your books up front or even pick some up yourself if you spot something you like. Very cozy atmosphere and very friendly workers. One of my favorite places to visit.
If you're looking for used books this has to be the place. So many rows of books and everything is nicely organized and clean. Add in the fact that you have 2 very friendly cats wandering around and it's a fun place to browse.
my all time favorite bookshop. i make the drive from west LA because it’s SO worth it. unbeatable prices and an extensive collection of every book you can imagine. from what I’ve seen, books range anywhere from $1 to $60. the aisles are well-maintained and organized alphabetically, with clear signage indicating each category. all of the employees are super friendly and helpful, which makes the shopping experience so much better. they also always have boxes of free magazines/used books by the entrance in the back parking lot, you can definitely find some treasures.
A very good used bookstore. Small parking area but easy to find parking on the street and within walking distance of a metro stop. They have two cats in case anyone is allergic.
Old books store, they even have free books outside. Heard about them for a while and went for a look and pleasantly surprised about the size of collections. Price is good too. Staffs are friendly and helpful. Oh that includes the Cat staffs too😺😸 …
Excellent used book shop. Large collection of different genres and well cared for books. Something for everyone.
Great place to get books, and great service 🙏👍✌ …
For the past four + years I've been coming here to calm the book buying obsession that my family claims that I have. Amazing books barely used and at excellent prices. The majority of books at other stores can go for $15 while theirs are $5. They also have a huge wall of $1-2 fiction books and a wide variety of religious, travel and cultural books with writers from all over the world. They also sell comic books! I used to live in Studio City and moved to Brentwood, but still make the trek here because their prices, staff and overall feel of the magical store beats any other used bookstore! Come here instead of Amazon, you will get to see what your used books look like and don't have to pay shipping.
This is a classic book store...... If you like to indulge your mind and don't like to pay full price for books, then this is the place to come!! This is a used book store with books starting at $1 so there's something for the whole family no matter your age or favorite topics!!
Absolutely fantastic used bookstore! My son and I visited and were impressed beyond words (no pun intended). This place has every possible interest covered and a tremendous amount of books on each subject. I found a large amount of books on chess, cooking, Hollywood films, biographies, etc. Going to visit again soon. And a plus, they have a cat walking around which will meow at you until you acknowledge its presence.
This is the outstanding used book store in the Valley. There are always bargains to be found here, and with a little searching, even a treasures or two. Highly Recommend!
Excellent Online Service, Shipping, and Quality! I will be a repeat customer.
I have not been to the actual bookshop but I will say that ordering from them online was both extremely easy and I was amazed at how fast and the quality of the edition I received. They even left me a pleasant little thank you note. (ᵔ◡ᵔ)
A nice escape from the busy streets of Los Angeles. This location is straight of a fantasy novel, with a larger than life book case containing building sized books stretching the outside of the building. On the inside there are rows and rows of used and new books to browse at your leisure. I highly recommend stopping by.
Great place, a treasure trove to loose oneself in ... I spent literally a half day in the store and could have easily spent another half day. The Iliad Bookstore is superbly organized by subject and alphabetical by author therein. Pricing is very reasonable. Parking is a bit lacking, but then we must take into account that we are in the LA area where real estate is prime.
I've always been able to find books to complete my collections and the owner always has wonderful suggestions. Prices are very, very reasonable!!
I was searching for a copy of Rise of the Ogre, the Gorillaz autobiography, for a while, and I finally found one here. I asked if they could update their listing with more information, and they instantly did. And when I finally ordered it, it shipped and arrived SUPER fast. I’m very happy with my purchase, they have excellent customer service, and I would definitely buy from here again. Thanks again for such great service.
Great place to read. Used bookstore with great organization and well kept books. The playwright selection is immense and fantastic.
I love this place! They have amazing collections and a whole room just for fiction books and literature. Everything is organized by the authors' last name so it was very easy to find everything. The staffs were all so helpful and friendly. They also have chairs to sit and read books in the fiction rooms. I really can't hope for anything better. However, if you are looking for newer books maybe you will not find it here.
This place was once the realm of Zola the one-eyed pirate cat. We still miss Zola.
This bookstore is a magical place full of treasures. Highly recommended!
This shop's facade looks like a shelf full of books and looks amazing. This is a large shop with a huge variety of books, organized by subject matter, then author. Owners have two cats that roam the store so be careful when opening the doors to the outside. They have their own small parking lot off a side street. Their aisles are narrow enough so that you'll have difficulty navigating if you have walking aides. Questions were answered quickly and accurately and there is a comfortable reading area to sit and peruse. Overall great store.
Awesome place, huge selection , good people. What is there not to like? .. 🤓 …
Always a lovely placec to get lost in with great finds!
Absolutely magical! This used bookstore has so much inventory and the books are reasonably priced. The staff is great. They're very helpful and knowledgeable. I was able to find some books I've been looking for, all under $5. The store has some fur friends as well. The cats hang out at the store so if you're allergic probably best to skip.
Quaint and great place for used books.. helpful staff
Kitties and some cool stuff, a lot of discounted fill your box type deals.
This used bookshop is absolutely wonderful. They have an extensive collection of literature, nonfiction, graphic novels, plays, and even some rare books as well. Beautiful murals greet you as you enter, and they have 2 cats! This is one of my favorite places in North Hollywood. I recommend everyone to visit!
Take care to note the pricing. Prices are on the inside, first page, in pencil. Some books are way overpriced. They should add stickers with prices to the outside of the book, as many of my other favorite used bookstores do. I unfortunately paid more for some books than I would have, had I'd easily seen the price.
This is such a charming and unique location. I've been here a few times, the most recent to sell a box of books. The parking is a little tricky as it is near a busy and semi-blind intersection. I believe there is parking in the back of the store, but it is not apparent driving up to it. Saw 2 store cats and at least one was open to petting. I was mostly interested in creating as I waited and was a little confused/ disappointed at the shelf labeling as it was quite inaccurate and a bit of a hunt to find the related material for the label. Overall, it was a nice experience and the staff was friendly enough, I only had a short interaction with them for the transaction.
One of the few remaining book stores of old with shelves upon shelves of rare, new, and many used books in pretty much every genre, in a space that is growing and with new and still empty shelves just added the last time I was there. This is one of those places a book-lover could easily spend hours scanning book covers and browsing through their pages.
There so much to look at with so many treasures. The staff will always help you find something, even if you don't know what you are looking for. The cats are nice and friendly too.
Awesome store with a HUGE selection of books. Quite an impressive place and I am so happy to see this store still standing with character. This in stark contrast to our Barnes & Noble post digital dominated bookstore landscape. The cats are AWESOME too!
Went on Saturday and there was line to get in due to capacity. The entrance is now in the back. Luckily the free boxes were outside to entertain and I found a book to take home. Once inside I noticed the layout was a bit different from my pre pandemic visits so it was disorienting but was still able to find a good stack of books. So did my partner.
What a used bookstore should be! Large but not massive. You can take a few hours to almost thoroughly browse the different sections... If you can't find at least one book in the place.you want to read then you don't like reading books.
Family owned with a great mural on the outside.
What could be more wonderful than cats wandering through hallways of books stacked floor to ceiling? This place is a kind of heaven on earth. Relaxing and full of treasures, with every kind of book you can imagine. From graphic novels to nonfiction to poetry to children's books, this place has something for everyone. The staff is kind and helpful. My only regret is that I didn't know this place existed sooner. A gem.
a neat little bookshop with tons of books! their fiction section is pretty extensive, with a sale section with $1-2 books. the employees were friendly and politely asked if i needed help finding anything, although i was just browsing. there is a sitting area with a few couches/chairs where people were reading. and of course, the cats! we saw two in store today, mostly napping.
Wonderful, huge selection, cute folks, cute cats
I love this place .. a book store in the true tradition.... No bells and whistles..but then again I'm not there for bell's and whistles ... I'm there for the books and they Have those
The Iliad is the greatest bookstore I have ever been to. They have a high turnover rate, and they are very careful with what they accept, and the prices that they sell all of the books, fancy (or not) are more than fair. Think; highly curated, highly affordable, built for the people by the people, vibe, then you start to see why this is such a fantastic bookstore.
I come to this store when I can't find what I'm looking for. But I found something that I was looking for and invested in it - since I love horror stories. It was like the book was saying "take me home with you!" Have you ever gotten that feeling? Sometimes books just drops off the shelf or your keep coming back to it. I found Dracula: The lost text of 1901- on their site and I was freaking out!!!! Why, because there is only 500 copies of these books left. What an investment... Then I called Bram Stoker's estate and got his Great grand-nephew's book called "Dracul." That was my Christmas present to me. Thanks Iliad!!!
This is a very nice used bookstore.. A little overpriced for used merchandise, but their selection kind of makes up for the prices. One note, they have a weird way of giving store credit when you bring books into sell to them. get the cash instead.
But this is a nice place to hang out for a few hours and browse their selection. Plus, the house cats, Zeus and Apollo are friendly and loved to scratched.
Wow!!! this bookstore was one of a kind. I love spending time here when my off day. I love reading books and this place has a lot of great books. You can really have a great time. No one will disturb you here. Cool place and I love to be back here again and again.
Clean, cosy, and immaculately organised—it’s easy to just browse or find something specific. Everyone is very helpful too! (Even the cats) And the prices fit my covid-strained budget with ease. Much appreciated!
I love this store and have been going to it for years. It's very eclectic and since it deals in used books you never know what kind of treasure you will find.
Great store. Very wide selection. Some fantastic bargains. Cute cats running around the aisles while you're browsing.
A deceptively small building on the outside, the inside of this store is absolutely massive. I've been here several times and I'm always discovering new books. The employees are friendly (including the cats) and are very helpful if you nees help finding any specific books you'd need.
This book store was everything I was looking to experience. The staff were knowledgeable, friendly great vibes & not intrusive or at all. I don't like shopping with a stalker asking me if I'm ok every time I move to another aisle. .AND they had some adorably chill cats that made it that much more welcoming ♡
I am a lover of books. In our world of technology, I bemoan the loss of the printed word on paper. Don’t get me wrong…I fully embrace the miracle of the computer and all its forms. I am a writer/author and for the first 35 years of my life I got most of my information from ink and paper sources and I regret the drastically dwindling number of bookstores. Fortunately, the Valley’s landscape is dotted with a rich supply of independent and specialty bookstores. I love books…the look…the feel…the smell and the optics of a book. The Iliad Bookshop is the one place in the Valley where you can go to get all the “booking” you need. I have been a customer for almost 30 years and the owner Dan has a multi-generational family legacy in the business. The inventory is astonishing and if you can’t find what you’re looking for, they’ll search for you. They are courteous, helpful and extremely knowledgeable about books and the business. I’ll stack them up against any public librarian.
Other services include a robust and fair book buy service which can come in handy when you need to sell your books. They carefully check each title for its resale value, meaning you’ll get a fair and honest price. A bonus: you’ll notice that many of the books at Iliad have mylar covers to help minimize dust jacket wear and tear. And if you’re a cat lover you’ll appreciate Apollo, the store cat which roams the premises. A cozy, friendly environment.
I've been to many used book stores, it's kind of a hobby. This is the best and, lucky for me, right where I live. The store is bright and clean with places to sit and read before you buy. Best of all the books are all sorted by subject and shelved alphabetically, not what you find in most used book stores. That makes it easy to find what you're looking for.
Time does not exist here. Browsing through thousands of books. Reading books in between aisles or on the worn out couch while deciding to buy them makes this place cozy. The best part is the books are very inexpensive since they are recycled better owners. They also have boxes outside the door with free books.
Parking outside on the street and they also have some spots behind. The walls outside are painted beautifully with book characters and settings plus they have huge book spines jutting out of the wall. All in all, this is one of the best used bookstore in SoCal!
This is not a place where you come to find something specific but to discover something new. There are so many hidden treasures here. So when you do visit be sure to give yourself enough to time to really look around and appreciate the full pleasures of the establishment.
A rare gem in our digital and 130 character obsessed world!
This bookstore has a cute novelty façade of books on Cauenga, and a great parking lot in the back off Chandler. They have large film and music sections as well as quite a selection of unique sections that cover every topic from crafts to philosophy to graphic novels to circus (yes, there's a circus section).
The staff are friendly and helpful. The shop smells like books and dust (as a bookstore should), but beware the cat if you're highly allergic - you may not be able to browse as much as you could! This place is bigger than it looks in House of Leaves fashion.
You'll lose track of time in this store. They have a massive selection of used books from every topic at good prices. Watch out though if cats are an issue for you. They have two beautiful ones!
This is my favorite bookstore. Great quality books, incredibly reasonable prices, and a very wide selection! They have two cats, which I am pretty allergic to, so I can't spend a ton of time here but I always love browsing and seeing what I can find!
We showed up to this bookstore by complete accident, and we were instantly amazed. They had a bigger amount of books than I have ever seen in one place, and a wide range of genres from pop-up picture books for a couple of dollars to hundreds-of-years old books and limited books for tens of thousands of dollars.
I walked in with whole family of 6 and a dog intending to "check it out" for a few minutes, but instead got immersed for hours and walked out with many great books and new friends.
First edition books, free books, occult books, political books, religious books, literary books, artisan notebooks, poetry, art books, modern books, and everything else one may want -- if it's bound they have it here. It is truly an intellectual's paradise. It has the smell of real, tangible literature and makes one wonder why e-books are so popular. The price is reasonable, and you can stay in this "book heaven" for hours.
If you are an intellectual, bookworm, history buff, on a quest for knowledge, good books, or tangible history, stopping here for a minute or even getting lost for an hour is a must.
I LOVE this bookstore! TONS of books on a variety of subjects. It is not great for Business books, but other than that you are good to go. If theatre/film/acting/directing is your thing, this place is the BEST. If you are an actor in LA and looking for scripts, this is your place!
Great bookstore! The staff is extremely knowledgeable about books and even have a knowledgeable history in books! A relaxed setting, often filled with loveable "book nerds", you can settle down and actually read! They always have 100's of $1-2 books on front tables and even a free box in the front.
Amazing ambience due to thousands of books, many of those vintage. Even more amazing are the beautiful cats (2 ?) that "guard" the premises. Their humans are very helpful also. If I was in better health, I would visit more often.
Nice people run the place, there's a comfortable lounge area and clean restrooms. Fair on prices. Plus they buy and trade. This is my favorite book shop.
Big selection and fun to browse, especially when accompanied by the resident store cats. Very happy to live near this book store.
My favorite bookstore. Super friendly and incredibly helpful staff. Wonderful and homey aesthetic with cute bookstore cats! I make this trip bimonthly from San Diego and it's always worth it.
I am so glad to see that Los Angeles has a quality book shop. On my first visit, I found editions of Fritz Leiber and Richard Burton that I did not know existed. This is now a required visit for stops in LA. Shops like the Iliad are why we live in cities.
Absolutely one of the best book stores in LA. The book cats are my favourite! This place is quirky and well-stocked. They are very knowledgeable at the counter so don't hesitate to ask any questions.
This is exactly what a used bookstore should be. It's HUGE, and the selection is excellent. I got ten books for $20—not only would these same books have cost around $90 new, but also at least a couple of them are out of print. I didn't experience the crankiness of staff referred to in so many other reviews, although the owner is out of town this week; I don't know if that makes a difference. Anyways, the staff were helpful and the clerk even knocked off the odd money on the total price because I was buying so many books. (Obviously you shouldn't EXPECT this, but it still gets an "excellent" for service in my book!)
Very interesting place, great selection and variety of used books. Very friendly staff and 2 resident cats that keep them company. They have a trade or buy program available most nights, as well. Highly recommended when in NoHo.
I take my 'precious' (to me) books and for a very reasonable fee come away with my book's dust jacket protected. I have purchased pricy books over time -- they never hassled me but I paid quickly. Just ask at the counter one of the friendly staff about buying the better volumes over time if you require that arrangement. Can't say enough in praise of the Iliad, a place I have gone nearly twenty years.
Such a great bookstore! The ideal place to buy and sell gently used books, both old and new. The aesthetic is like a set from Harry Potter. If you aren't big on books, go just for the atmosphere!
The overall theme and ambience of The Illiad Bookshop is quite tranquil, the walls, for the most part, are lined with books. The directory that is crudely plastered to the front of the shelves are a bit broad categoried and can be a bit tricky to get used to. A charming feature of the store is the cats that are often found lounging about or walking by. ❤️
Unique book store! Staff is super friendly and there are 2 adorable brother kitties named Apollo and Zeus❤ great prices and they have a little of everything! Can't wait to return 😊 …
Pros: above and beyond helpful staff, wide variety and good selection of books, affordable prices, cool cats freely roaming, free books daily, kids section with reading couches, rare and vintage books, nicely organized, welcoming atmosphere.
Cons: the cats aren't mine.
You can find almost anything your heart desires in book form here. Wonderful atmosphere. Browse, relax on the couch and read a bit, pet the cats, jump into a conversation about new releases or old favorites. I can and have spent almost a whole afternoon just wandering the shelves.
One of the last great bookshops left. Dont let the exterior throw you off. Their selection is incredible. Just the smell of all those books if you dont know what Im talking about you dont know. They have new books used books expensive classics comic books. A cozy reading area with couches. Im there at least once a week. Theres aomething about holding the book in your hand instead of amazon or ebay. Support your local book store.
Great place one of the few remaining used bookstores. In the old days days it was next to odyssey video. A joke only a English major can enjoy. Knowable staff, amazing selection including a used game section. A great book store worth the hunt
Cute bookshop! Interesting selection but you definitely must dig. And check prices! They can really vary and are mixed together.
One of my favorite places in LA. Unparalleled ambiance. Helpful staff. Cute cats. Eclectic selection of used books. And a clean, whimsically decorated restroom.
Old school used book store! You can find gems if you take your time. If you love the feel of a real book to read and hold this place is a gold mine. It's right next to NoHo so you can make a great afternoon of walking, food and reading.
They have a great variety of books. Adorable cats, comfy couches and a restroom. The books are fairly priced, they have 2$ books, a great collection of paper back books and much more. Its much cheaper then boarders and vromats.
Anyone that's been here know they put out the books they don't want outside for anyone to take for free. Now on numerous occasions I've seen people leaving with boxes of books from the free book section. For some reason whenever I'm there they never say anything else to anyone else out there accept me. Out of no where now there are rules to the freebooks. After going here for years now there's a rule your only allowed 10 free books and after that you gotta pay .25 per book. Keep in mind that no where is this rule posted and therefore how would anyone know?? 🤔🤔 Well the employee seem to have some type of issue with me and because I can be standing out there with several people taking book and he wants to count mine. Wow okay. I visit my grandmothers nursing home and bring books for many of them to read as they are bed ridden or don't have family to visit them so it occupies their time. The funny pary is they also tell me I never bring books to contribute which is absolutely false. When the nursing home is done with them I bring the books back to the book store for others to enjoy. Smh I also help several of my clients with move outs and when they have books they no longer want I bring them to the book store but the book store employee is calling me greedy and yelling with his finger pointed in my face. The worst customer service I've ever experienced. You should be ashamed of yourself sir. I hope one day your not sitting in an old folks home wishing you could read to pass the time.
I love this Bookshop 💖 So many books to choose from. Discovered it since my Daughter started school in North Hollywood. A must for those who love books and enjoy reading. PLUS 2 adorable Cats 😻😻 …
In a world where nearly everyone is either listening to someone else read books to them or people carrying hundreds of "books" around in a device, Iliad Bookstore is a breath of fresh air! Such a variety, nicely laid out and clearly marked sections...you can find everything from DIY on jewelry making to ancient architecture to the most popular fiction. Great place to buy, browse or even just to find a quiet corner to read in. Nothing beats the smell of the pages of a REAL book!
!!! Amazing !!! Really wonderful collection and really cheap! Ended up with way more than i could fit in my bike basket and wouldn't want it any other way !
The charm, the knowledge, and the people are what make this place special. Every inch of this store is crammed to the brim with words, and the employees navigate it like Marco Polo.
If you are a avid reader, book enthusiast, bored parent, or reading bookstore reviews because you have nothing better to read, this place is definitely worth bookmarking.
Heard about this place years ago and got myself a bilingual Bible. This time I called ahead asking for a Thomas guide. Bought three books. They are very friendly and helpful. Amazing store.
Books for everyone here. Prices are reasonable. Staff is very knowledgeable. Two cats named Zeus and Apollo patrol the store. My wife and I come here monthly.
Ever since I was in high school I heard about the Illiad but never got around to visiting. I dropped by the first time today to pick up some books for a local elementary school. First off, this is a PROPER bookstore with passionate people, comfortable atmosphere and just oozing with scholarly vibes sans stuffiness or pretentiousness. It has this lovely blend of organic non-franchise comfort with no none sense ambiance. The antiquarian books behind the counter at the register also immediately caught my eye. Really enjoyed my time there, will definitely come back.
I go here at least once a month and find the best comics. Zeus and Ares really make the store feel like home. Watch out for the couches though, they're a little gross! ;)
Inexpensive, nice and cozy, more then 100,000 books to chose from, people are very polite and helpful, you can relax and enjoy a book there while deciding to buy a use and good condition book, highly recommend!! They also have a beautiful member, a kitty cat!! Adorable!!!
Hands down the absolute best used bookstore I have ever had the pleasure of going to.
Such a great bookstore. I found some rare old music books. What a great surprise find! I'll definitely be coming back.
One of my favorite places to visit. They have a huge selection of cinema and such, plus some rare titles. I am not into that kind of read, but for those who like that, this is a good place. I'm into Mysticism, eastern religion, Metaphysics, the Occult and Theosophy...great place for that. Thanks people.
I have been coming to the Iliad for years. Absolutely Iove this this bookstore. The feel of it is wonderful. There are plenty of people available to assist if you need it. There isn't one person that works at the Iliad that has ever been offensive, always kind and considerate. So many books to look at and buy. Pricing is good too. With so few books stores around , I consider it a hot spot. You are missing out if you haven't been in.
I love this place! So nice to have a real bookstore close by. I picked out what I wanted then sat reading on one of the comfortable couches while my friend browsed the shelves.
This place is amazing. I can get lost in the shelves for hours just browsing. And also, there are cats to pet!
The best place for weird, obscure, dusty old tomes. Always find something fun here, and that rare book section is stunningly cool. Can find a little bit of everything at The Iliad, old and new!
One of the last great bookshops left. Dont let the exterior throw you off. Their selection is incredible. Just the smell of all those books if you dont know what Im talking about you dont know. They have new books used books expensive classics comic books.
Is this the world's greatest used bookstore? The Illiad is, hands down, my favorite place in Los Angeles. There are somehow completely new books every time I go in with incredibly fair prices. Plus, cats!
The staff here was great and super helpful for my first time there. I spent a few hours roaming about and exploring the inventory. It's a wide variety to choose from, and you'll fall in love with a lot of what they have.
Custom bookbinding , rare book boxes ,book restoration scripts bound , leather bindings.
I love this book store, used bookstores are dying out and it's great to see one still standing. This place has a huge selection and has recently added some new shelves to make room for more books. You could get lost in here for hours.
My beloved book store!!!! I've been coming to this book store ever since it used to be next to a Odssey video store a few miles away. The owner of the building increased the rent and it was a mixed blessing for the Lliad Bookshop.... I regret not be able to help them move so many books. It's always nice to walk in to a friendly faces of everyone who works there.
This is wonderful place to spend loads of time for great books for not very much money. Shop cats, interesting people and books on all the topics you can imagine. You got to go if you love books.
One of my favorite places in the Valley. The service is excellent and their selection is second to none. If you like books, you must visit this place.
My absolute favorite bookstore in the United States. Prices are reasonable. Great selection. Plus, cats.
Been frequenting this store, since it was located on Vineland. Nice selection, although light on sports for my taste. Otherwise, a fine store. Oh, very cordial owner and staff.
Literally great. Fantastic collection..and they give books away in conjunction with selling them. Also, very clever...very artsy type of look to the outside of the building. There is gigantic books that darn either side of the bldg. So great 👍 …
This is one of my favorite used bookstores. Since I am in the film business, it's sometimes difficult to find good deals on those types of books, even on Amazon and EBay. The Iliad had a ton of the books I was looking for, and some were $1 to $15. They have a huge selection and it grows everyday.
Pretty cool book shop!! What I was looking for was out of stock but I’ll be back to browse again soon- great selection!
This store is a treasure trove. Don't go in looking for anything in particular. Just go in with money, and come out with much, much less money.
Warning: this store keeps guard cats that roam freely. If you're allergic, you may have a reaction.
A friend pointed me to this shop because it's a great spot for comic books! They have a huge selection of graphic novels and the prices are very reasonable. I could seriously spend hours here, digging through their collection.
This bookstore is HUGE! Bigger than the original one on Lankershim. I love books but I always feel conflicted about buying new books ... but not anymore!
Highly recommended to #actors in #noho area since we lost Samuel French on Ventura a while go.
I shall be back!!
Last night was my beat experience " Ever "! Over at Iliad bookshop!! Meet the most interesting man named Mr. Ron a producer of sorts and a professional musical symphony orchestra/ Orchestra information Savant!! , James Derrick and I discussed famous conductors and composers with Mr. Ron for about an hour or so..good times. Thanks Iilad Books in the East Valley Los Angeles .. G-Man Gates...
I adore this bookshop, hands down my favorite in LA. They have a fantastic selection, reasonable prices, helpful staff, and two kitties that live in the shop.
Good selection of used books. Well organized especially for a used book store. Mostly fiction, I was hoping for more books on animals, and anatomy. Maybe I missed them, its a pretty big store.
Amazing book shop with many unique books. They also buy, sell and trade which is great. Definitely a place to add to your list to check out!
An LA treasure. Almost the last of its kind. A trove of literary riches. And those murals on the outside!
The book marms are exceedingly helpful in finding what you're looking for. This is the best place to surround yourself with bookish things. Try to avoid the occasional cat-induced book avalanche. They're impish little creatures. One minute the felines are mobbing the couch, crawling at a snail's pace, the next they're scaling the stacks, lobbing paperbacks at each-other and the unfortunate passerby.
Bring a healthy love of books and occasional mischief.
Great place, with amazing aroma of books. So helpful!!!!! Cats were a perfect adorment and snuggles for free. Guys were super handsome and sexy!!!!!!! I'll go next time I'm in town.
There exists few independent bookstores and only a handful of quality used bookstores. When I shop for bookstores, which is at least twice weekly, I check prices on Amazon and eBay and then I go The Iliad. If The Iliad has the book it's nearly always less expensive and , in general, they have more than a single copy. This gives me the ability to choose the quality and type of binding sight seen. There is also other advantages of discovering books I did not even know I wanted and of interacting with the knowledgeable and euridite staff. (They know everything!) The Iliad is a must visit/must buy-a-book destination for every SoCal resident and tourist alike.
Prepare to be greeted by two adorable cats, helpful staff members and a huge selection of fiction, literature, art books, graphic novels, and discounted books. Possibly the best used bookstore in Southern California.
They have a massive selection of used books from every topic at good prices. Watch out though if cats are an issue for you. The owners or employees are very friendly.
I think this store is an awesome bookstore to go to because it sells many books that could be considered outdated depending on the date of when the book was written. I think it is a good thing to even read books that might be very old. I hope this store will stay in business.
This is a fantastic used book store. Wonderful selection of graphic novels, esoteric books, rare first editions and signed book. Should not miss this store if your a reader.
This is a great bookstore. Helpful staff and a well organized space. There are two cats in residence, so for the allergic, beware. For me, that gives them another star.
SO MANY BOOKS. Great prices, too. I've been to some used book stores that overcharge. They also have free books out front. It's very clean and well organized, and they have a very friendly shop 🐈! …
Daily at bookshop was closed and let me tell you it was an odyssey dumpster diving those sweet books but those books were sweet I say come down can't really attest to when they're open
Endless aisles to get lost in; special focuses in sci-fi/fantasy, occult, and graphic novels; two separate mountains of $2 treasures; and two adorable shop kitties make this the first and only stop for used books.
Made for the true passionate book worm. The collection feels infinite, its a space in LA that transports you to a literature paradise. Amazing staff, you won't be disappointed.
Great used bookstore. The staff is so very helpful and knowledgeable. They even have a couple of Resident cats. It's a very cozy and inviting environment.
This was such an awesome bookstore! It smelled like old bookstore which most book lovers LOVE!! They also have a kickass selection of books- new and used.
Fantastic used book store, with super inexpensive prices. Have been able to find tons of gems - both fiction and nonfiction. Cant recommend highly enough.
This is a Gem of a bookstore. Unassuming, large and varied stock of used books among which little gems are to be found - all at bargain prices. Thank you for the valuable service you provide.
GREAT shop!! It's my favorite used book store. They have an excellent variety. the shop is cute, and you can't beat the prices.
Quirky place with an insane amount of books in pretty much all genres (except business). Prices were fair to an extent and yeah. Nothing special 🤷♂️ …
If your looking for 100 ways to prepare yak milk from 1930’s Inner Mongolia or for the continuing adventures of Dorothy in Oz written in Yiddish, this is your bookstore. A North Hollywood institution for over 5 decades and home to celebrity house cats.
An amusement park for the wise, the learners and the beginners. My favorite bookstore in Los Angeles. A true hidden gem
Great place to hang out and read. There's a wide variety of books and the staff is friendly, not to mention they have cute cats running around!
I like to get cozy and go to Iliad bookstore and get lost and come out with great books and even better prices, if you simply like books and literature come here and be wowed!
This is one of the last few holy sites for books in Los Angeles. Rows and rows of book from floor to ceiling on the scale of the Strand in New York or the once great bookstore in Long Beach. On my trip I found a paperback by J. R. R. Tolkien that wasn't Lord of the Rings , The Hobbit or The Silmarillion. It's titled Smith of Wootton Major and Farmer Giles of Ham, illustrated.
I used to love coming here as a kid and i'm so happy the place is still open today because i have a lot of memories and the place has so many great books and a great staff who love books too. my favorite book store location by far
Just a great independent bookstore. For us it's a destination bookstore.
Rooms of shelves filled with books categorized according to anything and everything that could ever interest you or someone you know. A very knowledgeable and helpful staff. And if this weren't more than enough enticement, they also accept books in exchange for cash or credit.
Lovely little place with a lot of $1 books I love to buy!!! Could spend hours browsing here and I feel at home with the kitties and the sofas ;)
If you love spending hours browsing through books that are unique, out of print, hard to find, and discover treasures, rather than stare at a stack of the latest Grisham book, come here!
Great discovery, beautiful wood floors, a bookstore cat, still recovering from many donations...think asking us to stop! for now
Kitties library is what my kids call it. Great selection and they'vee n carry role playing books. Be sure to check the free books outside as well
Love the set up and the cool sitting area. Will definitely be going back!
Great selection of books. The people that work there are very friendly and helpful.
Huge selection of used books across many topics. You can find books there that you will not find online. Easy to find location with easy parking. Large selection of graphic novels.
Its A newer location - but they have already settled in for the past few years - this has always been one of my favorite places -even when there may be lots of people browsing the big selection of used books its still pretty quiet and cozy.
A North Hollywood must visit not to many locations left a book lovers dream come true. If your allergic to cat there are several inside doing what they do
Great store many hard to find items, not a lot of current reads in any category. They aren't taking any books until sometime after 1st of the year.
This is my favorite small business! The workers are nice, the store is cute and clean, and they have two adorable shop cats.
Before Google had ratings friends of mine shared this mine of literary goodies📚Didn't go today, haven't been in awhile but if you like browsing, losing oneself in which all the genres books, magazines are found this a place to adventure🔖 …
Hands down the best bookstore in the valley.
Some great books here at a great price including architecture and literature. Very nice aura in this bookshop too
It's my favorite bookstore in the valley. It's well organized and has a wide variety of books for sale. The staff and very friendly and helpful.
Amazing bookstore. Planned to get one book and left with 4. Most things between $5 and $7 and the staff is really helpful.
It was very beautiful on the outside and tge inside has so many books, although not so many medical reference. the great plus side is that they give away free books which i found a great book about musician
Just a beautiful, cozy and thorough used book store. Bonus points for the cat mascots. A must for serious readers.
I can't say enough good about this book store! I could spend all day here reading and buying my books! Great prices!!!
This is a magical bookshop and I never fail to walk in looking for one book and walk out with 12. It's a joy to browse around in--I could easily spend hours there--and have!
This book store has tons of books at extremely reasonable prices. I often check them out for tabletop rpg books and am consistently pleased with the rotating stock of used books.
There are too few words in human languages to describe this place, so I'll just say, Qapla!
Lots of interesting and hard to find books. 4 stars instead of 5 just because I'm allergic to cats and they have a few inside the store.
Nice people great service I always go there when I sell books Dan the owner is very fair buyer and I use them all the time There's even a friendly Cat there.
Iliad is my favorite bookstore. I can always find something to suit my taste. The hardest thing about going there is trying to decide what to get without buying out the whole store..
Really cute place. Has two resident cats which I loved and an amazing selection of books that I can spend days going through!
My favorite used bookstore! You can get lost in here for hours. There’s nothing quite like it in LA.
This gem of a place is a perfect place to go to find a book. The staff are knowledgeable and respectful. ❤
There's good reason for their high overall rating. Terrific place; good folks. A real pleasure to lose oneself in this magnificent bookshop.
I love this place. They often have exactly what I am looking for, and even if they don't, I never leave without a stack full of goodies.
Great place for used books. Amazing atmosphere. The deals I got on graphic novels were incredible.
Excellent diversity of books... old, new, signed... Just keep checking the shelves. Parking in the rear and on street makes it easy to wander through.
Can spend hours looking . Entrance has moved to the back and feel likes less books than years ago. Didn't find much.
Overflowing selection. Over-friendly staff. Looking forward to my next visit.
Like a time traveling experience.
I always visit this place when I'm in the area. It's a highly above average used bookstore; good prices!
Super old school used book store. Cats. Comfy chairs. Great srjecty. Just no self help books ;-)
Classic old book store. There is at least one magic book hidden in there somewhere...and two cats!
A pretty great place to get books, just don't get lost. If you do get lost, look for one of the 2 cats running around, they'll help you find your way back.
One of the last bastion of used books in Los Angeles with a substantial inventory of new and used books. Visit if you are a book lover.
This library was amazing huge and has many books 📚😃 if you like a wide option then this is the place for you. …
Tons of good used books, floor to ceiling everywhere! And there's a comfortable seating area for readers.
Such a great bookstore! Love the selection and endless rows of amazing books.
Great selection of books
Great selection of books and they have free books out back!
Funky bookstore of used books. The selection can be rather good and at rather nominal prices to boot. It's well organized, too.
They have an most impressive collection of books and the ones outside are free 😀 …
This place has a huge selection of books, some you wouldn't expect to find . Make sure you have a lot of time to wander and look through all the shelves.

Just a very good used book store with enough order to keep it all manageable. A wonderful survivor.
Lovely bookstore in N. Hollywood. Its been around since I can remember it being on vineland, Camarillo and Lankershim. Great books. Great atmosphere.
Off the Chandler bike path. Never crowded. Real gems in here. Couches in the back to browse, scan and relax. Quiet.

Great store! Great selection, prices, atmosphere. Best book store in the valley.

Best. Bookstore. Ever. Right off the bike path, this place is excellent and has every book i've ever looked for!
Good if you want to browse through stacks of books and see what they have, but if you have something in mind, you'll have a heck of a time finding it.
My favorite book store in the world. Friendly owners, rare books, and cats that wander around and sleep on stuff.
Huge selection that could fascinate for hours. Some friendly felines make an afternoon spent here just a little better.

Hands down my favorite used book spot in the Valley.
They are knowledgeable and can usually help you find what you're looking for as long as they have it.
Favorite book shop to go to when I'm in California. Lots of books of different topics and if you lol cats that's a plus as well.
If you know what you came in for, you'll probably find it. If you're just wandering, follow the cats. They know where the good books are.
The best selection, reasonable prices, friendly help. They always have boxes of free books on the porch!
Cats, theres AC, and there’s books it’s everything it advertises baby
I pity you if you have a cat allergy because those little furry friends make this shop a truly lovely place to be

Easily the best book store in the valley, possibly in the entire city.
my favorite place in LA, dirt-cheap prices. Always amazed at the quality stuff I can find.
Quite a large bookstore with in-print and out-of-print books. They had some first print editions and Author-Autographed books, too.

Beautiful bookstore! A treasure!
Fantastic. You can spend hours there and prices are very reasonable. Great selection.
Probably due to Covid, this store is NOT open on Sunday as "Booble" claims. CALL FIRST!
