Reviews of Brazos Bookstore
A definite Houston staple and a must visit for any book lover.
Brazos Bookstore is bright, spacious and always spotlessly clean. They have a private, kids area/room in the back, which my kids enjoy very much so they often head straight there upon entering the store. The kids’ area isn’t as filled to the brim like the big chain bookstores, so my girls don’t get overwhelmed with choices.
Their displays are changed frequently so there’s always new things to look at. The stuff gives knowledge recommendations, are always patient and friendly. They host many book events in person and on zoom. They also have a great stationery selection.
I just love this bookstore.
What a beautiful and peaceful bookstore! I visited yesterday where there was a publisher’s event. I saw a great mix of new releases, classics, books that were on my radar, and books that immediately made my “Want to Read” list. There was some nice stationery and journals as well. Chain bookstores can be so overwhelming with choices so you usually just get what you came for and leave, but Brazos had employee reviews, and hosts monthly book clubs, making your purchase feel much more worthwhile. I ended up buying a book for my students, and a YA novel that will be discussed in their book club. It even came with a free nail polish! I can’t wait to visit Brazos again!
Wow! This bookstore is great! They have a great selection of books. There's also themed areas including Halloween, black authors, and indigenous voices. The children's area is also great and has books for all ages. There are author signing events too. The staff is super friendly and helped us quickly. Make sure to bring a card because they're not taking cash at this moment. The parking lot is also spacious!
Great bookstore. They support local authors and have great costumer service.
The physical space is not particularly notable. But the selection of books is differentiated from what you see in a typical store. Clearly the product of people who love books. I left with titles I never would have seen anywhere else and with more free bookmarks than I ever thought possible ;)
The workers were super nice & recommended several books to me! They all seemed to love reading and were very helpful. I left with the novel, Lapvona, which was deeply disturbing, but a page turner!
Quiet little bookshop with knowledgeable and friendly staff. Clean store, not a coffee shop or music store. They have a great gift selection too! Go for a visit, you won't be disappointed.
I first visited this bookstore for a copy of A Citizen's Guide to Impeachment by Barbara A. Radnofsky, which is an excellent and impartial lesson in this governmental procedure. There are various author events held throughout the year. The staff are wonderfully helpful! There is adequate parking. There is a children's area called Brazos Treehouse.
My second visit was as a part of their annual Where's Waldo search for local businesses. This was a delightful event for all. I had a genuinely great time visiting these local businesses!
The staff at this place are the best. They offer excellent recommendations for gifts, and are highly knowledgeable. Although their selection is limited, you can order any book (that is in distribution) through them--it only takes a couple of days to come through. I like their stationery assortment and have quite enjoyed the events I've attended here.
Absolute favorite bookstore in the greater Houston area. Great events, friendly and welcoming staff, and well curated selection of books.
Such a delightful store—well curated and particularly love the staff recommendations wall and selection of translated literature and poetry. Katie and Mark and the whole team are friendly and visiting always cheers me up! Well worth a visit while you’re in Houston.
Wonderful independent bookstore with wide selection of fiction, nonfiction and local books.
I came here for a poetry reading and loved it. As a teacher, it makes me happy to see independent bookstores carrying such a wide selection of YA and children's books. Of course I also found plenty for myself and my US History classroom. Cool space for book talks, readings from authors, and recommendations from the staff.
The bookstore is really organized and has a really relaxing vibe to it. The staff is really nice and friendly. One of the staff talks about the book that you've chosen and gives you details on it. It's like he's read every book in the store which is cool.
Customer service was wonderful. Everyone was so eager to help. Book clubs look interesting and great selection of stickers! I will be back.
Lovely neighborhood bookstore with quite a variety of books. I came here for one book for my niece and left with 3. To my surprise, they even had books in french. The personnel are super friendly and we're of great help. And to top it off, they host book clubs (virtual at the moment).
I'm proud that this bookstore is in my town! The staff genuinely love to read, and the culture of the store is comfortable and enthusiastic. The space is small, but the variety of genres is impressive. The bookstore also partners with Inprint (Houston's literary arts nonprofit) for events that bring great writers to Houston. If I'm having a hard day, I know I can swing by Brazos Bookstore for a pick-me-up!
Great independent bookstore. Wonderful, knowledgeable staff. I went mainly for children's books and found a good selection. I didn't have much time to browse the rest of the shop but what I saw was enough to make me want to visit again.
My favorite neighborhood bookstore with a great selection of contemporary novels and nonfiction books and new releases! The staff is very knowledgeable and kind and enthusiastic.
A small but well-curated shop for intelligent and discerning readers. Also a nice selection of cards and pens. The staff is friendly and helpful. I always enjoy browsing in the shop and make it my first choice when buying books.
This book shop is an absolute treasure! It’s small & cozy, and after your first visit, has a natural feeling of familiarity. They maintain a well stocked selection of new releases, many times including signed copies of select titles. I really love their recommendations - let’s just say I’ve yet to leave there with only one book in my bag.
The staff was really friendly and they had a great selection of books
The staff was helpful and nice. They offer a unique collection of books and it is well organized. They also have a kids area.
Had such a great first time visit here today! A wonderful meaningful selection for everyone. They were so friendly and helpful which made the whole experience great. Will for sure be back and would highly recommend!
A nice little independent bookstore off of Bissonnet inside the loop. Close to the museum district.
Great local bookstore! They host many free book related events every month, and are very kind to the local Houston writing population in general.
Amazing staff, amazing selection, and the staff picks and personal reviews are such an awesome touch to a small business bookstore! They didn't have a book I wanted so they ordered it and called me when it was ready and in the meantime I got some great books they did have in stock! Definitely will be coming back for that great service and experience
Super dope vibes great coffee and I got the strawberry danish after Saturday AM yoga
Excellent customer service and book selection! I’ve been following Brazos Bookstore and their events and safety protocols in light of the pandemic via their email newsletters and I couldn’t be more impressed with their hard work. I called the store to check in on inventory of a certain book and they were so helpful. I placed my order effortlessly online and picked up my book the next business day! Thank you Brazos Bookstore!
This bookstore is my favorite in Houston. No bookstore like it. It has great notes from staff about the books they've read. It's not just a book store. Everyone one there is a bookworm just like the customers. The selections are of variety and sectioned off. Sometimes I need help and the staff is always happy to help and recommend. The experience and service keeps me coming back. They have events and children events every weekend. Love books? This is totally worth the trip.
Very well stocked bookshop with so many must reads. Perfectly spaced for handicap accessiblity and wonderful browsing space. Found loads of great books. The gentleman that assisted me to find some books was very nice & made me feel very comfortable during the shopping experience. The only thing that keeps me from rating this store a five was the final interaction I had with an employee at check out. It was an uncomfortable interaction as a person of color shopping at a primarily white space. I was ready to check out with about eight books and she felt the need to validate every single one of my purchases and then I decided I wanted to get a tote bag. She asked me if I knew it was $20 and was that ok with me? did I still want it? And then proceeded to say don't know why I said that because I can't sell it to you for less. I obviously wanted the tote because I grabbed it. My husband who is a white man checked out after me and his check out experience was very different from mine. She didn't validate his purchases or ask him if the prices were ok. It was very uncomfortable for us because if someone (regardless of their skin tone) has a stack of books at cover price, a $20 tote bag is of no coincidence. That interaction just didn't seem necessary to me. If you'd like a very chill and awesome small bookstore without awkward experiences definitely try out Blue Willow Bookshop.
Support your local book stores!
Great little shop with an excellent variety covering all genres. The staff there really knows their stuff. You can walk in and just describe a book you'd like to read, and they're more than willing to offer suggestions
Story time with Laura is great for the kids, she's really engaging and full of character. The bookstore also has dog friendly book readings as well. Love this place!
Awesome bookstore that has loads of books that the employees have read personally. The books chosen to be in this store are well worth the read. Love their science/math section! Everytime I come in there there is a new and enlightening science based book for me to read, it is fantastic.
Brazos Bookstore is my favorite bookstore to patron. The staff is deeply knowledgeable. On my most recent visit I witnessed a staff person guide a dad around the store as he attempted to find a book for his daughter. She spent significant time asking this man about the types of books his daughter loves, her thoughts on character development, and other things. However, this is the ongoing care Brazos shows. I will continue to patron as they are a staple in the community and need to survive this pandemic.
This is my favorite bookstore in Houston. They have a great selection of titles, and the staff picks are always spot on--I've loved every book they recommended. This is also a great place to pick up cute stationery, totes, pens, etc. The best thing about Brazos is that they host so many awesome events--tons of writers come to visit their store every month. Sign up for their email list to stay up to date on who's coming to town.
Great bookstore with attentive and knowledgeable staff.
If I could give this place 10 stars I would. The staff is incredibly kind and give amazing recommendations if you have an idea about what you enjoy reading. My favorite bookstore!!
Brazos Bookstore is the best bookstore in Houston. The staff is always incredibly helpful and really passionate about books. They have a great selection of quality books, real treasures. And they can special order anything. I especially like the author reading events. This year we saw Christopher Kimball and Neal Stephenson, amazing!
Nice, quaint bookstore, not very large so not a large selection, but it's still a good selection. Only one employee was working when I went in, he was helping another patron when I entered but still welcomed me. I browsed not looking for anything in particular. They have a large section of staff recommendations and they were varied across genres. I didn't ask for help but neither did the employee come ask if they could help me, otherwise would give 5 stars.
Brazos Bookstore has such a carefully picked selection of books that it's hard to leave this store empty-handed. The staff is super friendly and willing to help and give recommendations.
They have a large selection of translated books and also a shelf dedicated a Spanish novels in the original language.
It's my to-go store to discover new interesting books and to be surprised by their recommendations.
This bookstore is so great, y'all. Every time I come in here I want to walk out with everything. They have a great selection of books as well as notebooks. They carry one of my favorites, the Magma sketchbook. They also have a lot of great authors every month coming into talk.
There are so few small independent book stores still in existence - Brazos is a gem and well worth the visit any time you are looking for a good read.
Best bookstore in the city. Staff is great and they are very thoughtful about their selections. Organized and smooth order pick up process too.
The selection of books is expertly and elegantly curated. From art books to strange Russian and South American science fiction, through to fiction and children’s books, you won’t be disappointed.
The real star, though, are the knowledgeable and friendly staff, and the wonderful events.
One of my favorite bookstores in the US, a stop whenever I am in Houston.
Brazos Bookstore is amazing, and should be considered your go-to local bookstore.
Their book selection is varied enough to grab the Barnes and Noble buyer while also providing a stage for smaller publishers and lesser known authors to shine. The staff is always very thoughtful in their write ups and recommendations, and will assist you in finding the kind of book that interests you.
If you've never been to Brazos Bookstore, it is definitely worth the trip.
Such a cute bookstore with friendly staff. There is a Where's Waldo scavenger hunt going on in the month of July that my friend and I participated in. It's been tons of fun so far and I have been introduced to so many interesting shops that are also participating in the Hunt for Waldo. Check this place out!
This was my first time here and had a great experience! I usually buy books online (amazon) or if I absolutely “need” something right this second, I head to Barnes and Noble. I got into brush lettering and wanted an Archer and Olive dot grid journal. They’re sold out everywhere online, but I saw them on the Brazos website so decided to pop in. Sadly, they didn’t have any in stock, but I was told they had already placed an order to stock up. Will have to return! Other than that, the place was quaint! It’s exactly what you’d expect from a neighborhood book store. Small, quiet and clean. I was pleasantly surprised that they carried a ton of random journals/writing accessories. WHO KNEW CHRISTIAN LACROIX HAD A JOURNAL?!? I didn’t, lol. They had all of the new books as well as a ton of lesser known books on contemporary topics. They also had a bunch of magazines! I only remember that they had fashion ones and a Houston city lifestyle type one. The workers were nice and greeted me once I got in the door and didn’t harass me like at other bookstores. I liked the privacy and time to mosey around by myself. And when it was time to check out, they were super knowledgeable and friendly. (That’s how I found out that the next Archer and Olive shipment was on its way). Would definitely return!
Music section is perfect for me! Lots of variety in books and gift type items.
This independent book store is a gem. Organizing. Signings and readings. One.of the last independent bookstores left in Houston. Don't come because it's independent come because.you want. Something new authors from across the spectrum. Reading’s from the authors. You want a signed book from your favourite author knowledgeable and helpful staff. Top notch who get your passion for books
I came here for a World Book Night event a couple of months ago. Brazos is a small-ish independent bookstore, so I would definitely call ahead if you're coming here to pick up a specific book. The staff is super friendly and helpful -- great neighborhood bookstore with regular author readings and events.
There's just something about wandering around a book store. This store carries books, stationery, notebooks, pens, cards, and assorted tchotchkes. What really makes a book store shine are the staff picks. They are varied and set in a nice display on a shelf straight across from the entrance. Sprinkled throughout are other recommendations.
Perfectly curated with knowledgeable & helpful staff. Always a pleasure & a must to visit this indie bookstore.
Wonderful atmosphere and great selection of books from boutique releases to poetry to bestsellers.
Nice science and kids sections, too! This is one of my favorite places to spend free time.
Friendly staff and great recommendations. It's a nice local business and has an incredibly airy open concept design which is unusual for a book store. If I lived closer I'd go again.
One of my favorite independent bookstores in the city, with a large selection of today's novels, fiction and non-fiction on a wide variety of subjects. A great place for author discussions and signings. Love 'em!
Best place to buy books in Houston! My kids love their book section and they always have great recommendations.
Love Amazon when I know what I want, but Brazos is the best when I don't. I have a teenage son who is a voracious reader but has a hard time finding things that suit his taste. We always come to Brazos for him and leave with a stack of books that are perfect. I always discover something for myself too. This isn't a superstore but rather a carefully curated selection of books with a helpful, knowledgable staff that you can't find online or in a big box bookstore. Houston is so lucky to have Brazos.
Always an excellent selection and wonderful staff with helpful suggestions
Lovely bookstore! Friendly employees. Clean and well organized. The staff thoughtfully review several of the books being sold, leaving well written summaries and recomendations. Good for a quick stop, or a long visit.
Okay, so this is a bookstore selling their new books at MSRP. Fine, but you have to sell those books to me; give me a compelling reason to buy them. They do not. My wife and I walked in, and weren't even greeted. There were two employees dusting and straightening shelves, and neither one of them made eye contact or greeted us. (The place isn't that big: they didn't miss us)
We quickly lost interest and left.
Brazos Bookstore is one of my favorite independent bookstores in the country! Brazos's staff is always helpful and fun to interact with. Excellent rotating selections and they always are hosting different, fantastic events for the community!
Brazos Bookstore delivers a quality experience. Independent, culturally and intellectually stimulating, and a great member of the Houston community, Brazos is our go to bookstore. It's great to have them in Houston. Book readings by authors, friendly staff, and willingness to talk books equals a great bookstore for me.
Cozy independent bookstore. I first visited for an author's visit, for the book "The Empress of Art: Catherine the Great and the Transformation of Russia." Next I stopped by to order a book published by a friend, "Schadenfreude, A Love Story: Me, the Germans, and 20 Years of Attempted Transformations, Unfortunate Miscommunications, and Humiliating Situations That Only They Have Words For." Both times the staff were friendly and helpful. I look forward to visiting again and wish I lived closer so I could come by more often!
The staff is truly knowledgeable and very willing to help you find something new and exciting that fits your interests. I feel particularly grateful for their commitment to have books in Spanish and translations. Also, Brazos Bookstore makes space for amazing writers to present their work, authors like Roxane Gay, Rodrigo Hasbún, Cristina Rivera-Garza and Yuri Herrera! Thank youuu Brazos Bookstore!
Best bookstore in Houston. The people are very helpful and knowledgeable. If they don't have something in stock, they'll help get it ordered for you. They also have reading groups and host authors throughout the year. I can't recommend this place highly enough.
Great selection with friendly, knowledgeable staff. They also have a ton of fun knick-knacks, journals, and fountain pens. Love this bookstore, it's practically the only place I buy books now.
Really nice bookstore. Has a lot of little notes with suggested books to read all over! Great to find new books to read.
Very clean and organized, not many religious books but the place was great.
This place is wonderful. The staff is friendly and they know what they do. It is obvious that they love books and are good readers. Plus On Saturday’s there ir story time for children’s. My daughter love it, and so do I.
Best indie bookstore in the greater Houston area. Yes, I have actually been to ALL of them. Fantastic selection, knowledgeable staff, good events, and modern aesthetic.
A wonderful bookstore. They will order books they don’t have in stock. You can order from the website for pickup.
Great store. Great choices
Amazing independent book store may not have the largest selection but the books are highly curated and I have never left here empty handed. The recommendations are spot on and the staff is helpful and accommodating.
Great selection & knowledgeable staff.
One of my favorite go-to bookstores. So much in stock and they’re always super friendly.
Nice selection of books and friendly staff. Very virus conscious. Hand sanitizer at the entrance and spaces on the floor to help us keep a safe distance.
Great bookstore with fantastic selection, great people working. One of my favorite local spots!
There is no bike rack
This bookshop is like a hidden gem. The collections of books are next level. All the staff are very polite and enthusiastic. Impressed!
The staff is very cordial. I like the layout of the store. It's really neat and orderly. The kid's section has a great selection of books.
I love bookstores & this one is great. I wasn’t aware of it until I found the “where’s Waldo” search around local Houston shops & restaurants. I encourage all book lovers to stop by!
Nice book store for the area. Saw two book discussions here and the hosted event for Patton Oswalt! Great that they are bringing new content and speakers to the area.
This was the first time I went and I plan on coming back. They had an excellent selection of many interesting books that you will not find at larger chain bookstores.
Lovely independent book store.
Excellent selection of books and really kind, helpful staff. Will definitely come here over BN any day.
Couldn't find the book I wanted at any Barnes and Noble or Half-Price Books in the area, but I walked into Brazos and after a very helpful explanation of how their organizational system works I found my book in all of about 30 seconds. Great experience.
If you like the idea of the neighborhood bookstore then this is the place for you. From the handwritten book descriptions by all of the staff members to adding of best stationery and p prime everything this place is my home away from home.
Great store, love it
This bookstore is a true Houston icon. I very highly recommend it to all bibliophiles!
Very Nice store. Staff seemed a bit cold though.
Friendly staff, excellent selection and recommendations, and great atmosphere! I come here about every month or so and can't help but walk out with a whole stack of new finds. A true gem!
I was impressed by the selection of books that are not often stocked in larger bookstores. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and provide reviews for a few of the books in their inventory.
Awesome store. Cool selection of non-book items (any story that sells Lamy fountain pens gets high marks!) Employees were awesome and helpful.
The staff and gentleman, who I am assuming is the owner, were super helpful and incredibly nice. They had tons of unique products, some of which I know are nearly impossible to find other than online. Also seemed to have plenty of events, but can't speak to those.
Get listed for the readings, buy books full price out of guilt, or order there instead of Amazon. Great for kid and YA literature and art books. It's an institution we need to support.
Such a great small, but stocked, bookstore! Great kids area with sweet books. Helpful and kind staff. Thank you!!
Great book selection and thoughtful display. Employees are far too loud and gossipy for the small book store though.
Was at the Brazos Bookstore for the Ibtihaj Muhammad book signing. Store staff did well promoting the event & were pleasant & accommodating. An overall good experience.
They have a great selection of books and I LOVE that there are a ton of Staff Picks! They also have an excellent children and young adult section.
Great books, excellent prices, always hosts the best events with authors, giveaways and more! The wine and cheese never disappoints, either ;)
Best book store I've ever been in! So many great finds, and so many events going on.
Truly wonderful Indie bookstore! Helpful and friendly staff and prompt order fulfillment.
The best curated collection of old and new books in Houston. Friendly and helpful staff, great book group. If you like to read this is a must visit
A very small yet robust bookstore. The employees are extremely helpful, and they have great detail when describing/recommending books.
Fantastic little boutique bookstore for people who love books
I love this local gem! Great place to find interesting books and receive excellent recommendations from a friendly staff. Love this place.
I always leave with more books to read and often have delightful conversations with both the staff and other readers. The reading and signing with Michael Arcenaux was fun.
Most beautiful and coziest bookstore in town. Amazing selection of books. Go support your local. Bookstore!!
Kind of a hipster joint with a smallish selection of books. No art section that I could see. As you can see by the ratings a lot of people love it. It just wasn't for me.
The people at Brazos Bookstore work hard to provide everything you could want in a local, independent bookstore. Their book recommendations and community events make Brazos my favorite Houston bookstore.
They were so incredibly nice! I’d ordered online and was in the area and they were able to get my order ready for me super quickly!
Nothing beats a good book store and this place is like a dungeon for all of those amazing books that they have in here, a perfect place to get you reading starting.
Books are carefully selected. They have events and fun activities. They also recommend and suggest books. Staff is super nice and friendly!
Went to a book publication discussion by local journalists; very enjoyable.
Hand sanitizer at the front of the store and capacity limits. Cute notes for books as well as a staff recommendation section.
Nice place, friendly staff
Great, friendly, knowledgeable staff. Good selection of books. Children's section is tremendous.
Excellent bookstore. Superior knowledge of how to bring in speakers and put on events of interest to their customer base.
Awesome bookstore where they always help me out with book recommendations. Very intimate and cool shopping experience!
Oh my god. Amazing bookstore. Perfect selection and staff. Wish it had more parking.
Very cool bookstore. Has a lot of reccomendations and signed books. Has lot of author events.
My favorite store for new books. As a reader of poetry and literary fiction, and intriguing non-fiction, this is the place!
Love the scenery, and the customer service is great but the selection is pretty small and bland.
I got the help I needed for picking books for my nieces. The staff is unusually skilled and helpful. And they wrapped my books!
Wonderful neighborhood bookstore with children's readings and activities every weekend. Adore this shop!
Safety protocols include curbside pickup and a max of 7 customers at a time. I love this store.
Great store with friendly employees. Had a pretty good selection and seem to have a lot of events throughout the year
They have a wonderful collection of history books and biographies. My mother really loves reading those kinds of books and I got one here for her.
Great bookstore, excellent helpful staff, excellent atmosphere. A local gem.

Love this local bookstore! The service and staff are great.
Wonderfully curated bookstore with all the most current books in every flavor!
Great shop. Very nice. A destination location. I just wished it organized its sections better.
I love to support independent books stores. I high recommend that you do the same.
Lovely staff, great books, and a must visit pen bar.
Very well arranged conducive to browsing; staff very knowledgeable about books, perhaps like librarians and better.
Very good staff and a lot of insteresting books
Great variety of books and very friendly staff.
First time to visit the store. Found a selection of books and gifts that you don't find in a Barnes and Noble.
Friendly staff and a great kids section
Great independently owned bookstore with a quality selection of books
They have interesting books and the staff is super friendly.
So actually, I'm glad I didn't have much time to hang out there because it would have been a very difficult exercise in Elimination after a while.Books are hay, y'all.
It's just a great independent bookstore, great staff!
I love being here in the afternoon. There is no one in sight and I can browse peacefully. I always go here and do that, I love the peace in here.
Super cute and edgy store. Not your typical run of the mill store which I loved.
Cool local bookstore
