Reviews of The Midtown Scholar Bookstore
Fifty2weekhi
I passed by this place during my long walk in search of street murals in Harrisburg. I entered the store with the intention only to warm myself up on this cold winter day; however, I was immediately intrigued once inside. The main space has a 2-story tall ceiling featuring an old oxidized copper/brass bell. The entire upper walls on the right side was a huge mural of people engaging in all kinds of leisure activities. There were staircases in the back leading to the loft, and on the sides leading to the second floor. The structure, the ambiance, and the smell of books were so inviting, begging me to stay longer and explore more. Yeah, the setting is so very "scholarly" that it really reminded me of a library I used to spend time studying while in college.
There's a café right at the entrance which doubled up as book checkout registers. There are used books in the second floor gallery. And there's a separate room through a door on the left for children's books.
It's very rare these days to find an independent bookstore, let alone a cool one like this one. I strongly recommend a visit if you're in the area. Together with the Broad Street Markets just across the street, it'll definitely be worth your trip.

I found this gem a few weeks ago. It is a delightful new and used book store in midtown Harrisburg. The decorations and atmosphere almost give you a mystical feel when you are there (a little harry potter like). They have all kinds of book sections, a cute cafe, a bakery area near the kids section and a little sitting area on the second level outside. It's a nice place to study and relax and I will definitely be back.

This is the bookstore of all bookstores! The more I kept walking through the bookstore the more store there was to see. So much to look at so much to read, everything you need is probably in this place. The kids section is great it has a room where they can sit and even a little cafe. The kids were able to quietly sit in there while we browsed through the book store. This place is a must visit. It changes the definition of a book store. Barnes and nobles could never be this unique.

The interior design is lovely. It gives it an antique feel. They also have a small cafe, so it’s a good place to stay for a while. The bookstore also has a balcony you can access if you explore a bit more.
David Bowers
Powell’s of Harrisburg. I don’t mind that many of the big box bookstores are closing down, but I’m ecstatic when I see places like this surviving. Places like this inspire hearts to think beyond the screen. To relax and converse. I just loved smelling that book smell as I walked through the isles. The coffee was good enough, but I typically don’t rate a bookstore on the quality of its cafe.
Cassie-Marie Demme
Such a great bookstore. Large variety and nice mix of new and used books. Love the vibe, too. Very cozy, welcoming, inclusive.
My friend and I went to see an author speak and we really had a nice time.
Joe LaMartina
This store is a book lovers happy place, the store has multiple areas on 4 different levels, this is in addition to their rare book store next to the original store. So many choices and the prices are amazing. They have bargains everywhere you look including a bakery and coffee bar. The staff was amazing helping is find books and even going out to the floor to find them, this is a must for anyone who loves to read.
Seth
One of the best independent bookstores in the US. Period. A very special place.
Monica Prince
Beautiful independent bookstore with a wild selection of books, room after room of collections and prints, truly a delightful experience
Carl Henry
Been awhile I seen a bookstore with so many shoppers. With this digital age, nice to see people still buying paperbacks. They have a coffee and snack bar that is actually pretty good. It has a warm welcoming atmosphere that makes you want to grab a good book and just enjoy the mental journey and a good coffee.
Carrie Ann LaVan
I am madly in love with this place. The coffee and cheesecake were both deliciously rich. The cashier friendly and Informative. They just need to expand a little more with a few small tables to breathe in the books..
Amanda Crotsley
Very pleased with midtown scholar. The prices were great, staff was very helpful and friendly, it is beautiful, and they have great coffee! The organization inside is a miracle in itself. I will most definitely be back.
Ahmed Islam, Associate, Industrial Properties
Great environment to chill and finish up work that needs to get done but... *yawn* (err... you've been lazy or just unmotivated)
Been wanting to visit this place for a long long time. But I'm really glad i did today. Got a lot of work done. Great music. Super friendly staff. Awesome coffee (real ceramic mugs). Awesome environment.
Robert Higbee
The coolest bookstore in the area, period. I just today discovered a cool nook on the lowest level where they sell fine prints (fine as in $15 to $350 fine). They have popular books as well as heavy duty serious books. Lots of recycled architectural items festoon the interior spaces, like wrought iron railings. There are plenty of comfy chairs and even a bakery and coffee counter. You should for sure check this place out, even if you normally aren't turned on by bookstores.
Andy Getty
New releases, classic novels, antiques, and rarities are all here. Get lost in the basement hallways or enjoy the main area with a coffee. Must see for book lovers. Even if you aren't much of a reader, it is a sight to behold.
Lisa Bartelt
Drop off your book-loving friends and family and come back for them in a few hours. What a treasure for the Susquehanna Valley! We were there during their fill a bag cart sale, which was a bonus to our visit.
Bev F.
This was pretty much the bookstore of my dreams. I cannot imagine a more picturesque bookstore. The selection was pretty good for fiction but if you're into nonfiction I have never seen a larger selection in my life! ( and, trust me, I go to a lot of bookstores) the History Section is ginormous! The arts section is an entire part of the building and not a small part at that. I could have spent hours and hours in this store! And I spent two and that was the minimal time of me just browsing. Their coffee was excellent as well! I highly recommend their butterbeer latte! It's very good and not too sweet.
Caelan Borowiec
Awesome bookstore for both new and antique books. The coffee bar inside is a great place to stop for a latte.
I love the "flat rate" antique books area. It's fun to find a vintage read for $20.
John Kutasz
Wow. It looks like a pretty standard store with mass market titles and coffee available at the counter. But keep looking. Down the hall to the left is a lovely bakery and cafe where I found a terrific breakfast. Check out the mezzanine with a stunning collection of art books and some glass front cabinets with rare stuff. But there's lots more.... Wander through the second basement level until you round a corner and find woodcuts, prints, etchings, and the bigger cache of rare books. Stunning place, organized and run with great care.
Kristy McCoy
What a bookstore!
Explore every nook and cranny - upstairs, downstairs, around stairs, through the tunnel. So so much to see.
Don't miss the exorcism kit!
What an absolute gem!
Patricia Dubyoski
A must see! Great looking coffee bar and a beautiful interior. Staff was warm and book selection was expansive. Upstairs there is a balcony that opens up to the street out front. This is definitely a place where you could relax for a little while and read or work. I left with a book for my partner, I would recommend, and will add it to my next road trip that passes through Harrisburg.
Rodica Mihalis
Midtown Scholar Bookstore continues to be one of my all time favorites in Harrisburg! A place with many cultural activities and a wealth of books for all tastes and interests. I was saddened to see a display of banned books and am wondering why, as this is the reality of the multicultural, diverse society we live in. I did purchase the beautifully illustrated book, Everywhere Babies by Susan Meyers, illustrations by Marla Frazee which speaks for the truth that all babies everywhere must be loved and celebrated!
Crystal Webster
Very cute book store and coffee house! I wouldn't have gone except for the book signing but so glad I did!
Rachael Caretti
Absolutely obsessed with this place. By far the coolest bookstore I have ever been in. The basement is a hidden gem with lots of old books you won't find other places. Also the coffee was delicious. Super kind and helpful staff because the bookstore can kind of be a little bit of a maze to navigate!
Evan Van Orden
Amazing bookstore with extensive book options. If you can't find a book to your taste here, ask! I could easily spend all afternoon here browsing. Grab a coffee or pastry and sit awhile.
Kenneth McCreary
What a TREASURE: a beautiful bookstore with cafe in historic Midtown Harrisburg. I'm inspired that old-school charming bookstores still exist. I'm visiting from DC, and I'm already in love with this bookstore/cafe ... and the charming neighborhood that it's located in. I see from flyers that it hosts various performances and events, so it's also a cultural hub for the neighborhood. It's also conveniently located across the street from the Broad St. Market. I had the fresh ground and brewed coffee with a slice of sweet potato pie -- delicious. This is definitely worth a visit!!
Tatiana Ursu
This place has it's charm. We spent more time at the bookstore than at any other place. If you like books, this the right place for you! Coffee/tea served.
Leah Farber
Their were so many books to choice from. There were 4 levels to the store. On the bottom floor there was antique and rare books that you would not find in a normal bookstore. Very friendly staff, they like to help you find what you might like to read with a bright smile on their face. Overall I would defiantly go again. And I highly recommend it to everyone, whether you are a bookworm, don't read alot, or you have a family. Their is a book for everyone.
Sandy Carson
It's one of those places that is bigger on the inside!! Soooo many books!! You could spend hours here. Will visit again.
Ryan VanValin
Expansive library with a huge selection right in the heart of Midtown. There is plenty of seating to read, and they have a nice cafe serving coffee drinks as well.
Eric Swope
This place is THE quintessential setting for those who wish to engulf themselves into an abyss-like cerebral/academic wonderland amidst the ambiance of what is basically a coffee shop, old book store, library, art gallery, antiques book collector's paradise, and art gallery. The experience here is pure academic heaven.
David Litrenta
Extensive selection, amazing atmosphere in a repurposed building. Cafe had good snacks and coffee, staff was talkative and enthusiastic.
We sat, enjoyed a book and a bite while watching a chess club, then shopped. A perfect trip.
Sarah Ellen Lewis
Hipster city. Cool atmosphere. I don't think parking is bad, but I'm from here. Tourists may disagree.
Alyssa
It's always a delight coming here. So warm, inviting, and magical! I could get lost here, which is the best! We were specifically looking at the older books when we went yesterday.
Gina Marie
New books, used books, espresso drinks, and a cafe inside a beautiful building? Yes, please! If you are a bibliophile, The Midtown Scholar will not disappoint.
When I visited (Labor Day weekend 2022), there were numerous sale shelves with tiered pricing, including a bag sale. The sale included some very interesting vintage books, as well as newer titles.
kendall martin
Awesome - not to be missed ! outstanding staff, incredible range of titles and warm ambience.
Carlie Green
This store was fantastic. A really great store you could spend forever wandering through. Old and New books of all categories. Includes places to sit and a coffee shop.
Sam Dillon
This is the most amazing book store I've ever been in. There's something for anyone amongst the rows of shelves with something new to discover around every corner. Make sure to check out all the floors if you visit! Great cafe inside too.
Katie A
A wonderfully large bookstore. If there's a topic they have a book on it. It have multiple floors and the basement seems endless. Even if you're looking for antique books, they have them! Everything is fair priced and in good condition
Curtis Mittong
Super friendly staff, great teas and coffees, and the BOOKS. What a neat place.
Brooke Wiseman
What better way to spend a chilly Sunday morning than sipping hazelnut mocha lattes and enjoying a great book? Midtown Scholar offers such a large collection of books, without loosing the small, hometown feel. Although the size can seem overwhelming when you first walk in, you’ll feel cozy within a matter of minutes, wandering the endless aisles of classics, rare books, and new best sellers. Grab a hot coffee or tea and one of their delicious pastries, find a seat, and settle in for an experience you’ll be yearning for again.
Dawn Cleveland
The Midtown Bookstore is absolutely outstanding. New books, Used Books, Sitting areas, Cafe and Bakery are all for the Community to enjoy all three floors of super goodness. The Midtown Bookstore is conveniently located in Midtown Harrisburg and is one of my favorite spots to visit and hangout. Highly recommend for everyone to stop by and enjoy the pleasant atmosphere.
Aysha Barner
I always adore coming here. They have new and used books alike, and rare things, like Victorian maps, scattered about!
Annette Seidenglanz
Lots and lots of good to excellent used books for browsing while enjoying a great little coffee from the bar or a yummy scone.
Look for the mayor of Harrisburg in this renovated movie theater -- he supports access to affordable books for his city!
Nich
This place is great, layers and layers of books.
The staff was very friendly and welcoming. The coffee drink I had was also excellent.
Andy Tirado
Impressive bookstore with rooms and halls galore with great collection and distribution of books. Just wish it were a little friendlier particularly management. I was never acknowledged, greeted, offered any help, etc. The barista was much kinder and welcoming when it came time to check out.
Jubilee Young
Can't wait to go back. Shelves of amazing looking books including old relics.
Tony Venne
This is one of the greatest book store in the region. Get lost for hours in the stacks pulling volumes. A place that lets you linger for hours....
Yuri Espinal
Interesting place. It has a coffee shop inside as well.
Daniel Hoyler
A must visit for bibliophiles! It has such an inviting feel and you can spend hours there.
Nicole theTrainer
I go here every six months or so and have never had a good experience with the staff. I'm polite, I buy instead of using the store as a library, but still, the staff is standoffish and rude. I don't think it's the same few people everytime either. I feel an air of disdain and unapproval.
Typically, I go with a book or books in mind, and buy a coffee or tea while I'm there. The beverage is alright, nothing to go out of my way for and nothing to complain about.
The book selection is unparalleled and if it weren't for dealing with unfriendly staff while purchasing the beverage to sip while I browse, I'd spend more time looking at the shelves and finding inspiration instead of racing to what I was looking for and dashing out.
I lived downtown for many years and celebrated the book store's opening. Now I go to support the smaller business and hold the books I'm looking for, but I've been begging to feel I'm better off supporting a small business online and forgoing the disrespect.
Rebekah Phomsopha
I absolutely love midtown scholars, I was introduced by my best friend. We have came here twice now, still on marvel about it. They have ever book that you need and that you didn't know you needed. I love the old original maps that they have the the old historical things they sell in the bookstore. There is nothing quite like this place and I have traveled quite a bit. If you are into history or a bibliophile this is a must stop if you are anywhere 2 hours driving distance.
Ashleigh N. DeLuca
This may be the most gorgeous bookstore I've ever been to. Clean, cozy, well lit with plenty of good reading chairs. A must-see if you're in Harrisburg.
Michael Kelley
First time visitor. I had to leave before I spent all day and all my $ here. What an incredible bookstore
DJ S
Found a great old printing of Leaves Of Grass. The tea and coffee are fresh and well prepared
Donald Pitches
Varied collection of books. Interesting interior. Browse the latest publications, or used, rare, antique books, prints, & maps. Nice children's section. Relax with coffee, drink or baked goods from cafe. Sit in balcony while you read.
Dale Short
Very interesting place. New, used and antique books for sale. Make sure you check out downstairs. Lots of deep dives and wierd tomes on a lot of different subjects. Staff was friendly and helpful without being overbearing. There's also a small bakery on site.
Nicole Gramlich
LOVE this store. So many good books both new and used. I spent so long in here on my first visit!! The prices on used books are pretty good, even for the more popular and more recently published ones. Really good deals on the bargain books out on the sidewalk too. The store itself is just really nice too, it has a very classic bookstore vibe that makes you want to sit down with a coffee and read away the afternoon. Highly recommend this shop to any book lovers!
Don Goldberg
New books, old books, rare books, coffee, chess, lectures. Great place.
Dan Rerko
One of the crown jewels of Midtown. No trip is complete without visiting the Scholar. Great book selection and the in-house coffee shop is excellent.
Marigold Holistic Pet Care
Stunning labyrinth of books. Best selection of any store I've been to. Could spend hours there. Great cafe selection of drinks and snacks.
Natali Quinteros
I just love this place, it’s my go to spot to hang out with friends. The selection of books is amazing, prices are great, and the food is really good (I mean the desserts and drinks).
Stephanie Fritsch
Cool hipster place to go and discuss the important issues of the day. Read books and drink copious amounts of coffee. Knowledge , great coffee and people..THAT is the way at the mid town scholar book store.
Review revised as of April 16 2016
Mean Muggin and chillaxing at the Mid Town Scholar Bookstore! I am having an ice coffee and relaxing before my yearly Physical at my Doctors office up the street a spell! Last time I was here Sarah McBride outed me at a talk she was doing and told the audience about some of my hard work for the Transgender community. I went with her down to North Carolina to fight the Dreaded"Bathroom laws HB2" in 2016. It was very validating at the Time! She agreed with me on a local party situation that b I was a part of! I won't discuss it further because my point is very well known! Staff is very hard working and professional..I would rate it extremely Transgender Friendly. Since, I am a transgender woman!
emma affeldt
This is such a lovely bookstore + café. It was absolutely beautiful in there. Multiple floors of books and a balcony. The cafe was very nice as well. Would definitely recommend visiting if you have the time!
Opeola Bukola
This place is like a theme park for bibliophiles - it was awesome! I'm legitimately upset that the "best things to do in Harrisburg" list I found didn't include it.
This store is incredibly intentional. Everything from the clever shelf section names to the pulled-quotes chosen to represent featured books on their shelves, seemed meticulously curated - I was consistently impressed with the thoughtfulness. For such a massive place, being as specific and detail-oriented as they are is quite a feat!
The staff was very friendly as well, with the barista and book cashier being one in the same, and therefore a consistent, jovial, "Whatever you need, hit me up" vibe to the staff. If you did inquire for some insistence, it came quickly and kindly.
You can tell the locals who are familiar with this place love it, as so the out of towners who seek it out or, as we did, stumble upon it in their explorings. 10/10 will return.
Bill Murphy
If you're a booklover.Get yourself lost in the Grottos . Surprisingly cavernous, wonderful !
Adam Gamble
What a place! 3 stories high?!! Book lovers dream if there ever was. Had the best tasting chai drink there. Coffee is excellent too. You have to go there.
Chad Rabinowitz
Very cool store with a good little cafe.. Can easily spend hours wandering the aisles..
Amanda Boyer
One of my favorite things about Harrisburg. Absolutely love their coffee and tea bar and the book reading and signing events. Very fair prices too.
Linda Siemens
I'd been hearing about Midtown Scholar for years, and finally had a chance to visit. Great selection of books for any type of reader. Since COVID they don't have seating inside, which was unfortunate since I had planned to meet a friend and then spent close to an hour searching for another place to meet and chat. Hopefully they will have indoor seating soon ❤️
Tom Johnson-Medland
This shop was unbelievable. An exceptional gallery of books and prints. You will find just about everything you were looking for and so much more. The prices are great, the variety both deep and wide, the atmosphere noble. When the pandemic is over and tables and chairs are returned it will be PARADISE!!! Don’t miss this shop - BIBLIOPHILES ONE AND ALL. It is a must see space!
Stephen Cottam
Friendly and helpful employees, every one of them that I met made me feel at home. Warm atmosphere, comfortable and personable cafe feel. Slightly quirky and fun, like a book store should be.
Gianni Pescetto
Wow, a book lovers dream. Be careful if you're the type of person who is overzealous buying books when you already have a backlog. You'll leave with a few more books you won't get to in a while.
Love the building it's in as well.
Thomas Means
This place destroys Little Amps. Awesome building, great tea selection and low price, awesome books to look at, and the mayor owns it so you can ask him where the restrooms are and he'll tell you the passcode.
AnnmarieRoze
Stopped when passing through the area. Really nice place. Large selection. I just wish they had more children books.
Jayme Peacock
Five star bookstore, three star cafe. But the bookstore part is legit cool. It's a converted church and makes excellent and creative use of the space. There are tables where you can sit and read and sip your coffee (which is just ok). And it never feels crowded. This place really blows those chain bookstores out of the water. Great selection, and the displays are well tailored to current events, but in an educational rather than gimmicky way. They also have a good selection of literature and even some academic books (though you might have to hunt for the latter). They also sell vinyls and old posters, but books are the main attraction here. I haven't felt this comfortable in a bookstore in years.
Keith Dewees
The building has a long history. Before the Scholar took up residence it had been a theater, and a furniture store.
The Scholar has occupied that location for over 20 yrs! The ground floor houses a bakery & a coffee. The gallery's accessed by 2 staircases.
The basement was expanded c. 5 yrs ago, pushed back under the alley behind. A rare book dealer occupies part of the space
A number of civic organizations hold meetings there including book clubs. The weekends there feature chess players & stand-up comics. The nights are for poets
Across the street's the Broad Street Market. On the edge of the next block is the Yellow Bird Cafe but it's not the only nearby eatery. There's a half-dozen other restaurants housed on the nearest blocks and a neighborhood market.
Eduardo Mendieta
After the Strand, my favorite bookstore A Borgesian utopia. You can get lost in the stacks. Do it.
Michael Lear-Olimpi
Very cool Midtown Harrisburg venue. Loads of books for sale and for perusing. Neat corridors and chamber-like rooms in the basement. It's the Harrisburg-area place for antique and other special books. It's also the region's leading author-and-book events center. Good coffee and confections, too.
Yazmin Pena
I was visiting from out of town and unfortunately, the physical store was closed but there were TONS on bookshelves on the sidewalk to look through. Everything was organized in an efficient way (by genre, etc) and the staff was super friendly and helpful. In addition, in the back of the store, there was a small bakery with delicious small sized pies and cupcakes that made the experience so much better. The book selection were great, everything from classics to recently published. I would definitely go back if I return to Harrisburg.
Susan Jones-Sink
One of the BEST bookstores in our nation! Always having free lectures by current, fabulous authors!
Vanshika A
Good coffee, wide selection of books, lots of places to sit. Many used books look practically brand new but are significantly discounted. Great for both finding a good read or studying for a while. Has a hidden cafe separate from the coffee bar in the children’s section.
Edit: butterbeer latte is AMAZING! Not too sweet, not too strong of a coffee flavor. Also, they have children’s story time frequently and it’s adorable to watch!
Justin Howard
Most amazing bookstore I have ever seen. The ambiance is incredible. As you make your way deeper into the store, you feel like you're diving into a cave full of treasure. It just keeps going and going and going. The cafe is lovely, and they have a nice selection. If I lived closer to Harrisburg I would be here every day.
K Hess
As a huge book lover, this is one of the best bookstores I’ve ever been to. The atmosphere is lovely and the music is always perfectly chosen and set at a great level. You can get lost (literally) spending hours in this bookstore. I come here to clear my head and just peruse often. There are many opportunities for signed copies of books and cool events. Haven’t tried the food or coffee yet, but I’m sure it’s lovely as well.
Maureen C
Huge book store with a nice cafe. I'm glad to see an independent book store still operating. They have three floors of new, used and rare books. Fun to look around. I left with three great books that I cant wait to get to.
Michelle Kooi
Enjoyed exploring this book shop. It is more antique or new books, not a place to find a good selection of cheap/used bargain books. They have a great history section. You can find some rare books, there are spots to study and sit. Children's section is fun and the cafe is good. They also have live events and a print shop. The bottom area is a labyrinth.
Brandi DeAngelo
Great coffee, delicious desserts, friendly staff, and cozy atmosphere. The basement is seemingly endless with books and the second floor overlooks the entire store. It's a really nice place to hang out if you're local, and a must-see for travelers and tourists visiting the Harrisburg area!
Silver Stea
Most gorgeous and magical bookstore I have ever seen. A truly wonderous place and a must see for any book lover. When I walked into it, I thought I had strayed into a dream. So huge I literally got lost. But what a magical place to explore. It's unreal and the staff are so wonderful. Though I clearly had little money, one of the staff noticed me marveling over the rare and old books section (like, "keep under lock and key and in low light" types) and gave me a tour and a bit of a history lesson on how old books are preserved and how they were made back in the day.
Kerry Burns
Awesome, tons of books and book deals. Large selection! Ample parking.
jenny stevens
The selection, the lighting, the delicious smell, and the long list of visiting authors.
This bookstore seems like more of a community center or venue than a bookstore based on the authors who have come to it. It's upbeat, bright and a nice place to be. I often feel like book stores are dingy shelves stacked full of as many books as possible, sometimes even lining the floors, this was a big open room, with good lighting and lots of space.
Benjamin Hall
Huge selection of books, with tons of cozy nooks to hide in. You could easily spend the day here browsing, reading, sipping coffee, and nibbling on pastries.
Lori
My first love is books and my second love is independent book stores! The Midtown Scholar ticks all the boxes.
Jake Schlegel
A time capsule in the middle of Harrisburg. Great selection of books and genres. Stop by the cafe for a delicious drink or snack; also stop by the bake shop for freshly baked treats. Would recommend to locals and tourists alike👍👍👍 …
Manuela Lyons
Nice xx quiet atmosphere with many
books to choose from and good coffee as well
Gipsy Duran
Never seen a bookstore like that before , this place it’s huge and awesome, you can find any books on here !
Sean di Renzo
Simply, wow! This store is a place to get lost for HOURS. Specializing in art history, history, literature, literary criticism and science, this store is truly a scholar's paradise. There are new editions, used copies, foreign titles, and gazillions of antique copies. Every time I'm in Harrisburg, I walk out with an armful. A necessary stop for book lovers!
Angela Taylor
Biggest bookstore I've ever been in. Take the time to explore it's bigger than you think. I love the fact there is very little fiction in the place. Lovely architecture and art. Best coffee in Harrisburg. A great venue for local groups to meet and it seems there is always something going on. Great staff. Free entertainment during 3rd in the Burg. Well behaved dogs are welcome. The only con I see is that the food is nothing special.
Melanie Stegman
A great place to work, a great place to share a coffee with a good friend, and a fantastic place for meeting authors of fantastic, meaningful books! They seem to have all the new books and the used book collection is very well organized and includes many historical books as well as many great fiction and non fiction paperbacks. Coffee is strong and baked goods are luchious! The staff is super friendly and helpful about books and coffee!!
Zachary Despreaux
Great private bookstore offering new and used books all priced at an absolute bargain. Coffee shop inside has alright coffee but it's not the best in town. It'll do if you're there studying and need a pick me up.
The basement has tons of old historical books and very rare prints. The upstairs has a balcony you can sit outside on or sit inside looking over the main floor. Great lighting and wonderful place for working or studying.
They also have a lot of guest speakers in as well
Elizabeth Gearhart
A friend and I stopped in here after choir practice last week for a late night treat. I honestly had no idea this place existed before she took me there. I loved the old world architecture and tasteful way their books were set up. The aroma of lattes and cinnamon filled the place. Staff was very friendly. We sat up on the second floor balcony to have our coffee and then we browsed their selection. Will definitely be stopping by again soon!
Rebecca Miers
I LOVE this store!!! There was so much to see, that I need to go back with several free hours. First, parking is free. Second, you do not have to be a scholar to appreciate this bookstore, as you will find everything from cookbooks, to children's books, to rare books. Third, the prices are unbeatable. I was delighted to find a great sale of buy 2, get 1 free on already reasonable prices. I tried the coffee and peanut butter cookie from the cafe; I was served on beautiful pottery and was able to enjoy sitting in a quiet area near the children's play area. I was impressed with the children's books, I found deals from $1 and up, including books from years ago I had read as a child. The rare book section was fascinating to walk thru, and the fine prints were beautiful to see. This is a must see, must go to shop...just be sure to make sure you have some time to browse!

God this place was a breath of fresh air! The employees were humourous and charming, and the building was clean but rustic. Walking in was the equivalent of taking a stroll through a park in the middle of fall with a scarf around your neck and a latte in your hands. It was lovely. If I could I would go back. It's filled with layers upon layers of all the books you could imagine.
Denise Anhorn
Astounding collection of books!! I was impressed by the size of this place. All subjects are here as well as a lovely collection of antique texts. I spent a couple of hours here and I didn't even scratch the surface of the collection. The cafe has delicious beverages and treats and the bakery makes wonderful snacks and sandwiches. This was an unexpected find in my hometown. Whenever I am back for a visit, The Midtown Scholar is now a MUST on my visiting agenda.
Caroline Topperman
I definitely have a weakness for anything books and this is one of those places where you'd better be prepared to just sit and read for hours!
Robert Mosher
One of my favorite book stores so I am very glad it is not closer. Impressively large selection of books across a broad range of subjects. The organization of their shelves sometimes frustrates me (their books on Ireland and Scotland are arranged in their extensive UK offerings by author). They have books at readers' prices as well as at collectors prices. They also have a coffee bar and limited seating.
Eire Girl
We found this store totally by accident while looking for a nearby shop. I absolutely didn't want to leave! Midtown has the exact "vibe" I look for in a bookstore. It's my belief that all bookstores should smell like good coffee and have ample seating, Midtown provided! The selection of books is huge, the staff is helpful, the place is awesome. We'll add it to our list of must visits next time we're in Harrisburg.
Brian Vance
I love bookstores but this one is really special. This place is huge but deceptive from the outside. The rare books section is interesting and I love all the little areas of tucked away books. The prices are really good too.
Lena Choi
Loved this placed. The books are nice and the cafe in the first floor. I also enjoyed studying/reading section at the upstairs.. the only complain is the music :):):) it was a fast-paced loud Irish music and... sort of difficult to concentrate/does not match with the bookstore environment. But would love to come back! During weekend, you can also park at the market in front of the bookstore.
Jaron Flickinger
Nice local bookstore - the building with its unusual ceiling (great beams), stairs with ironwork and mural is worth the visit. There is an impressive selection of books considering the size.
They have coffee/tea at their main desk and pie and sandwiches near the young adult area.
Check out their programming - they invite a number of authors and speakers. The programs are usually free - some require tickets.
I did not see an elevator. Anyone who has difficulty with stairs would find that about half of the bookstore is not accessible to them.
If you love books, you need to check out this place.
Natalie Geiger
Midtown Scholar felt like a mini version of the library in 'Beauty and the Beast.' You walk in and the majority of the walls are covered in books! If there are no books on the wall, the space is occupied by a beautiful mural, artwork, or posters showing upcoming events. They seem to have just about every subject of book and the categories are clearly marked. There is even a downstairs that I briefly looked at. I can't say much for the prices of the books as I did not see much pricing, but I only looked at a few books, so maybe I am missing something. The bookstore also has a cafe and seems to hold many scholarly events throughout the week. Overall, it seems like a great place to casually book browse and there is a very calm, quiet atmosphere. I definitely want to come back and spend a little more time here!
Jordan Hess
I absolutely love this place. The atmosphere, the employees, the coffees and teas. Highly recommend. Also if you're in the mood for a good book huge selection from current novels all the way to classics and rare titles.!
Kayt Maeve
This is a book worm's haven. The crowd here are scholarly people of all ages. I have seen men playing chess here, people having book club meetings, and the usual book worm relaxing at a nearby table. This place is perfect for sitting with your laptop to do studying or browsing for your next literary adventure. The pastries are delicious and they make a mean hot chocolate and chai latte. This place is perfection.
Vincent Ciaramella
I heard about this place and finding myself in the area I stopped by. I love a great bookstore and this place did not disappoint. Here are some thoughts and advice.
1. Go in with a game plan. This store is massive. If you are going in to browse you’re going to be overwhelmed pretty easy. I decided to look at Economics, French History, and rare books. Between the three sections it took me almost an hour and a half and I rushed.
2. Some of the books are used and others are new so check the price.
3. It’s street parking. Not a big deal but just thought I’d put it out there.
All and all a nice experience.
Andrew Boettinger
Great atmosphere and wonderful employees. They are always welcoming and helpful. The selection of books is amazing and the building itself is a treasure trove if hidded rooms and tunnels. A must visit site. And the cafe is excellent. Wether you're looking for hot coffee, a blended mocha(my favorite) or baked goods, they have it all.
Tran Cao
I fell in love with this place at the moment I stepped in. I always love to check out bookstore and local coffee shop wherever I go and this place is like the best of both world. They have the most used book that I ever seen and their coffee was delicious! My barista, Christina, is a very cheerful and friendly person who opens to conversations. I had a great time time.
Ben Anwyll
This is the best used bookstore in the nearest 100 miles. It's just full of weird and wonderful finds. I love bringing my friends to it just to see their jaw drop once they walk in the door: they are always shocked when they realize how huge and elaborate it is. Also, their cafe makes top notch coffee and espresso. Great place for a date or just to wander around and get lost by yourself.
Kaela Schomaker
We stumbled upon this gem and couldn't believe it! The biggest non-chain book store I have ever seen! The selection was amazing. They also had some book readings happening while we were there as well. The staff was very knowledgeable and polite. They also have a very wide variety of teas to sip on while reading or browsing.
Cassandra Mizak
Very nice place with good coffee. Lots of books and great atmosphere. Basement is a little scary. No one answers the phone so if you’re looking for something you just have to go in and see. Which isn’t a bad thing because they are all super nice and the one daytime manager is a total babe.
cappi kris
Just wow. I went looking for a baby shower gift for my new nephew. Not only did I find the perfect baby books, my children found a young reader's play section. I stumbled upon annexes and long hallways of books. There's just a never ending selection. Books for reference and pleasure. They have a small cafe with different coffees, teas, cakes and sandwiches. Even some kid friendly selections. I'd recommend this place, even if you're just looking for something to do for free.
Christian Devitt
Very nice bookstore. I like it alot. Really big too. They have books on all kinds of stuff plus they have a cafe where someone serves you coffee and other kinds of drinks. Very popular place in Harrisburg. I recommend visiting here with friends if you live in the area or if you are a visitor that doesn't live out here
Joan Moe
This place is amazing! Three-plus floors of books, new and used, some rare, and a coffee bar! We never leave here empty-handed. Prices are reasonable. I never know what I might fine. Staff is friendly and very helpful.
Jonathan Wenck
It's a maze downstairs, but it's the best maze! Not anything like your standard bookstore, this place forgoes the bestsellers to focus on odds and ends, with classics and even a section for rare old books. It has a nice clean cafe, a small kitchen for sandwiches, and live music on occasion.
Maris Doherty
A wonderful small business with a plethora of places to explore. They've got new books, used books, antique books, prints, and more. It has pretty much every type of book you could want
Jonathan Klein
I visited for the first time after wanting to go for quite some time. The store is a gem for book lovers. They have an interesting mix with something for everyone. I was most impressed with the rare book collection and art area. I had coffee which was a cut above. Received an education from the barista and could tell it wasn't his first rodeo.
Bee
Awesome service!!! So cozy!!! So many books to choose from!!! Plus they use the best milk (Apple Valley Creamery) for the lattes and specialty coffee... Definitely will have to try the fresh baked goodies.
Heidi Dueck
Absolutely genius combination, bookstore and coffee shop! Seating available on first level, and also on the balconies.
Irish Creme
I'd like to move in here please? Just tuck a cot among the stacks. New and used books. I love their discount priced craft and gardening books. A whole library cart stuffed with craft leaflets at 6.95 or less. Hardback books also discounted. The titles are catch as catch can but you can strike gold on vintage books, too. Tea, coffee, Italian soda, fountain soda and plenty of sweet treats to keep you cozy for a full afternoon of browsing. On a nice day, I'll browse the outdoor sale carts: 50¢ paper and $1 hardbacks. Fun!!! The do have a computer to search specific titles.
Patty Penna
My visit was a surprising experience, I could not imagine how the bookstore looked on the inside. It has new and antique books, many interesting suggestions, and small tables spread all around so you can have a coffee or do some reading in the middle of this book paradise.
Amanda Fansler
Perfect little spot for a hot latte and to browse random books. I really love the area (Mid town) and it is so easy to just cross the street to broad st market for lunch if a bigger meal is wanted. I have such a difficult time trying to describe this place to out of town friends. Part book store, part coffee shop, part historical artifact, part hangout destination.
Corby Crawford
Favorite book store. Amazing selection!
Christopher Janney
The Midtown Scholar represents the bookstores and libraries we grew up seeing in movies, where it looks like you can find secret doors to escape to places within the book you are reading, or that you might literally be transported into an adventure like Narnia or The Neverending Story. The people working there and the people visiting are hard to tell apart because everyone feels like a neighbor you grew up with. The snacks and drinks are just right for visiting or for holding a meeting or other event, and there are always special happenings taking place. You certainly cannot be disappointed by the huge supply and diversity of literature available on just about anything, and you might just find yourself coming to sit and relax even without a book, just for the people and atmosphere. This is definitely one to check out for anyone who would like to fall in love with a bookstore again!
Kayla Gordon
One of the coolest bookstores I have ever been to! Loved the bakery attached to it with the sweet potato pies! The coffee was also delicious. Highly recommend if you are in the area.
Katie Dell
Love this little spot and I try and stop in whenever I pass through. They have your standard new books, but they also have unique and rare books. The tea at their barista counter is amazing and all the staff are friendly and helpful. Great vibe!
lynn photos sadwee
This is a bookstore not a library. Yet you are welcomed to stay as long as you please and read what you may. There are both used and new books a plenty. And multiple levels to peruse. If it's your first time there, explore all the levels and the various reading nooks. I especially like the top level, the very bottom (basement) and P an R's bakery located over in the childrens section. If you can't find these things please ask the staff. If you're looking for something but can't find it in house, ask the staff and take advantage of their full warehouse selection. Shame on the reviewers that drove an hour away to find something to eat. There are many eclectic examples of culinary delights in the Harrisburg area sure to satisfy. The beauty of this bookstore unfolds the more you explore.
Jennifer Steeber
Beautiful bookstore! All it needs is better air conditioning, extended hours, and to move the whole stone closer to my house so I can go there more often. 😁 …
Leah Slemmer Scheib
If you love books, this is a must-go. When you think you've seen everything, the floors and corridors just keep on going. Some really awesome finds if you love vintage books and prints.
Jeriah Sellita
I love it! It's so unique! Not a great place to sit and have a quiet experience as groups meet there for different reasons. It's a bookstore like no other though, that is for sure!
Brooklyn New
I am a lover of books, and if you are too you will absolutely love this place. An amazing collection of vintage, used and new books. The place is book heaven with multiple floors and a maze of books, I plan to return before the weekend is over. Best book store I have ever visited.
Ella Hauck
Such a great bookstore, with great cafe products too! This place is massive, there are so many turns and sections. They didn't have a book I wanted but it made up for it with the hot chocolate and muffin.
Solimar Lopez
Just in love! Is amazing! great variety they have a book for everyone no matter what you like to read plusss they have coffee ☕️
Ralph Rich
If you like book stores You'll love this one! At least 4 different levels plus a Huge Balcony. They even have a cafe. Please don't miss this one. Great place to start or end your Day. Prepare to relax and enjoy the experience.
Emily Murtoff
Great place to study or work, but the wifi can be a bit iffy. They have decent coffee with a few pastries and a little bakery that serves breakfast next door. As a bookstore, it is a Harrisburg must. Multiple floors of all kinds of books, new and used.
Amanda Suda
Such a great place to go if you're looking to browse a bookstore, grab a cup of coffee, sit down and do work, or all three! There is a lot of character in this old building. The employees are all very nice as well. Great place!
Michael Duncan
This is an amazing local bookstore! It has a huge selection of books and is much larger than it appears on the outside. There is also a cafe inside and a stage for local gatherings and maybe musical performances. If you even occassionally like to read and you are in Harrisburg, you should stop by this bookstore!
Minh Nguyen
Nice bookstore but seating can be difficult to find as it's usually packed
Ole Elfenkaemper
I love this place. Every time I travel the North East, I stop for a visit. The flair and atmosphere is really welcoming and warm. They have their own breakfast/bakery inside the bookstore. The pecan bar is top dog. Go there and buy a book.
Rafi H
There is a really nice large selection of used books.... I come from the south where used books are very cheap compared to PA, so the prices are a bit of a shocker sometimes haha. Also I've been visiting here often for the past year or so and the coffee alwaysssssssss tastes burnt. Their other drinks are really nice though. So 3 stars for huge selection of books and cute atmosphere but burnt coffee and not so cheap books.
Peterson Toscano
Deep in the heat of this old theater you will find stacks of books underground. I feel like I'm in the catacombs. I especially appreciate the gender and sexuality section. The art books usually take 45 minutes of my visit. It is impossible for me to visit this bookstore without buying at least one book, usually three.
Cyclist 1954
A good place to buy titles you do not find at the national chains. The atmosphere is intellectual and bohemian. Additionally, its coffee bar serves Counter Culture gourmet coffee, a well- reviewed brand. Occasionally, authors will speak there and sign books.
Ben Haines
Massive used book store! I make sure to stop in every time I'm in Harrisburg. The selection is always fresh and seems to be endless. You could wander throughout the store for hours. There is also a new book section that composed of resent releases and hot books. Many classic, collector, and rare books available for purchase. The midtown scholar is a must stop for any book lover or for a relaxing place to get a drink at the Café.
Austin Graff
I've been too a bookstore or two in my time and Midtown Scholar Bookstore is the best I've ever been too (including Powell's in Portland and Strand in NYC). At first, I thought I was impressed because I didn't expect it in a smaller city like Harrisburg, but no. Midtown is objectively the best bookstore in the USA. Here's why:
1) The building: It's in an old theater and the front still maintains the theater vibe. Once inside, you're inside a world of thousands of old, new, and rare books. The ceilings are high and you quickly notice it's two levels. However, as you explore, you'll stumble upon more floors and rooms off to the side of the main hall. In total, there are five levels to the bookstore. On the upper level, there's even a balcony with tables and a great view of Broad Street Market and the Pennsylvania State Capital building.
2) The books: The main section sells new books, but the rest of the store showcases old and even rare, historic books for sale. They have every section you can imagine. Note: It's a bit hard to navigate the sections, but the staff are friendly and more than willing to help. Also note: the business section is a little lacking. They sell academic books, but not your more accessible business books.
3) The staff: They are friendly and more than willing to help in a non-intrusive way. They are inviting and you leave with a pleasant experience.
4) The amenities: There's a coffee bar inside, but it doesn't stop there. There's another cafe/bakery in the kids section. Amazing!
If you love books and independent bookstores, make a trip to Midtown Scholars Bookstore. It's America's Mecca of bookstores.
Latasha Dale
I actually love this bookstore! Me and my family make sure we visit whenever we're in Harrisburg. My last trip here I was fortunate enough to see Darnell Moore. He is the author of the book titled, NO ASHES IN THE FIRE. If you haven't already done so, be sure to visit this store. You won't regret it!
C-M Lee
Very extensive collection of books from the 1500's to current, like the graphic novel Allergic (Lloyd and Nutter) we got for our kid. They don't have Japanese anime or manga though. Others including original John Burroughs nature book were going for prices like 3 for $10. Found old DoD technical book from years ago about Radar even. That and some other books in Latin upstairs were flat price $20 each. Very friendly staff also.
bothaina
Loved it!! We spent three hours roaming around the shelves and buying a bunch of books, some books are cheap coz they are second hand, look for them!
Love the kids area, my son played with books and even had lunch.
Lovely place.
Trip Taylor
I love this book store. From the layout and architect of the store to the selection of books and the cafe's. I would have given this five stars if it wasnt for the fact that they just took the kids play area out in the kids section. It was nice having a place for my daughter to play while I caught up on reading. Im hoping they are just relocating it and not taking it away completely.
G Aquino
You walk in and you’re greeted by that peculiar scent of old books. Huge floor space and lots of great titles on a wide range of subjects. Overall, the books are in excellent condition, except for a few with badly crumpled covers, and you can call the staff’s attention to those.
I expected to buy several books but the prices really turned me off. Apparently, ‘used’ doesn’t mean ‘bargain’ at this store and you’ll get at most a $5 discount on, say, a $40 book. I didn't see anything that was at least half priced, except for the books outside, none of which I found interesting. I ended up buying just one book.
Wyatt Denues
Really neat store, staff is friendly. The coffee bar is nice as well. There's an old book section downstairs that is unreal.
Will Wanger
Phenomenal bookstore I could spend days exploring
Aboud Aboud
If you like to spend time in a large space full of books, arranged beautifully, and have coffee.. so this is the place. I enjoyed the time i have spent there. Great atmosphere. They have a nice place for children too.
Brian Singmaster
By far the most amazing Place I’ve ever stepped foot in. Take the strand book store, add coffee and also a cozier and more comfortable experience and you have this amazing amazing place. Amazing organization and book selection. I’m happy to know this store exists and will definitely be back!
Tim Meier
Every time we’re out visiting family in PA this is a must-stop.
Ashley LeBlanc
Amazing selection, good bargains, so many rooms! A beautiful venue!
Sean Limric
It is rather large which is a welcomed suprise. Their selection of books is vast although admittedly I only had a few minutes to pop in. Their famous author sections(s) was nice as was their art section. It is more like a library than a bookstore which is really cool.
Kara Davis
This is such a wonderful book store. It's so beautiful inside. Order a beverage and peruse the multitude of shelves, find yourself a good book and take a seat to slip into another world while enjoying the atmosphere and the coffee/tea.
Chad Silva
This place has so much soul - it's great. I love the building, the cafe, and the really wide selection of books. It's an ideal place to either pass through and check out, or set up camp to get some writing/reading done.
Kelly Hobbs
Beautiful bookstore inside an old church. If you're looking for a unique place with rare books, centuries old books, new releases, author signed books, children's books...this is your utopia. There are large selections of art history, American History, religion, cultural sciences. If you can't find it here, it probably doesn't exist.
Plus, there's a luncheonette and a coffeeshop right inside.
Angel Gonzalez
First time here with a friend. Got a tour from him. Awesome place. Great coffee. Excellent selection of books.
Justin Rogers-Cooper
Awesome independent bookstore in Harrisburg with good coffee, bakery, some new books, great atmosphere, evolving excellent book selection. A hit. Go here every time I’m in town. Well run. One of the best of the last for a reason.
Laura Garber
A very lovely bookstore with a great selection, many events with authors, and beautiful workspace with coffee. The WiFi is frustrating to work with but if you can muffle your annoyance screams it may be worth it.
Bwn1157
Plenty of books to choose. You will not be disappointed. They serve coffee, tea and food at a reasonable cost. There are tables and seats. I arrived when the bookstore just opened so there was plenty of parking across the street.
Alex Ognibene
One of the best bookstores!
Tiffany Smith
This is one of my favorite spots to either find a good book and drink a cup of coffee or work on some homework away from campus. Their variety of baked goods and beverages add to the charm of the place and the people there are super nice to boot.
Alex morton
Ive never seen a cooler looking bookstore. Great selection, amazing vibe, great people. Can't recommend enough.
Janet Richey
A book lovers dream in the heart of downtown Harrisburg. It has a coffee shop, a stage for local bands and book signings. A corner of the store dedicated to chess. It has a 2nd story loft on either end of the cavernous room, which is connected by a narrow walkway that is filled with more books. There is a history section in the lower level that is as a close to being an archive as you can get. Just make sure you check their website for parking info, and also check the Broad Street Market schedule. You're likely to have a better chance of 2 hour free parking when its not open.
Alan Jordan
Harrisburg, PA's most unique bookstore. The Midtown Scholar offers a great selection of books including some rare and unique selections. Enjoy the coffee and snack bar or any of several seating areas to review your book selections, research, meet friends, make friends or just chill. This is the place to be!
Sheila Api
This bookstore being at this location is so good for the community in midtown. It's a good place to go and read or have a meet up with friends.
People not familiar with the region should be more alert when visiting here because some interesting characters roam the place, mostly harmless but this is a city location that is getting there in terms of urban aesthetics but still has some work.
The midtown bookstore for me symbolises an establishment saying"I root for Harrisburg!" when there seems to be meagre hope and that is just bold and beautiful.
They might not also have exact titles but they seem to have titles for every category.
As an aside, I just wrote a negative review about horrible customer service about an establishment and not to be one of those people that only write reviews when they get horrible service, I'm also writing about a place I think I had a positive experience at and the midtown scholar was it for me.
William Rohaly
This place is huge. There are multiple room and floors to explore you can almost get lost. If you are looking for a specific book, you are likely to find it here. Also has plenty of tables in the nooks around the building to enjoy a book and coffee. Plan to spend some time here.
Nickolys Hinton
My favorite spot to introduce friends to in all of Harrisburg! Absurdly varied selection of books that's constantly evolving and being updated, fantastic environment to read or have a cup of coffee in, and super friendly staff that's always able to help point you in the right direction. And it's right across from the Broadstreet Market!
Codey Joshua
I absolutely love their cold brew iced coffee at the service is really good and it’s not a bad place to go to look for books because they have everything in anything you could want. The service is fantastic if you need to find something just asking anybody and everybody will help you.
Jenni Butler
The smell of old books and fresh-brewed coffee = paradise.
colby troutman
Awesome place to take your time finding any book you choose. Coffee is great, the bakery is splendid, staff knowledgeable and atmosphere relaxing. Take a trip to the broad Street market when you are done. Recommend for sure
tjmag
Great place to grab a cup of coffee and relax, study, or explore the vast selection. They often have really good selections of new books in the front, and engage the community by selecting topics to highlight and in holding various events. Great public space!!
Jason Bratz
A huge multi-level bookstore and cafe. The books can be expensive, but there is a wide variety, including really old and obscure books. The coffee and tea is well made. You can even get free hot water refills for the loose leaf tea. There is also a separate counter with a bakery inside of here!
Justin
Awesome local, independent bookstore. It's always great to walk through and see the huge selection of books at really good prices and just browse for a while. The new books right as you walk in are a good variety of fiction and non-fiction.
Robert Ireland
Seriously the best book shop ever!! Like something out of a movie. Highly recommend!
Megz
You will probably get lost in here....
yup probably. But it's great!! This place is absolutely huge so there's a section of books for absolutely everyone. also cool places to sit n chill. pssst. coffee shop alert🖤 love it …
Valerie Duty
Valerie..p..Duty .pie and your parents should be in a relationship that you didn't have the right experience and the family and the situation is not the best treatment you could be with him for a couple days to come to your child will not work on the same age when they do and the family or friends or to you in a different manner of life you want them in your area and have no idea why you don't want you on your side and the other person you have a good thing for your own time to work with them or your parents and their families and you can do a better idea or take care to keep you busy to sleep and your family is the most attention and you will not work for you to be honest and not even a good thing and that you didn't have to go through a different way than the others that are not getting a lot to do it
Wyatt Mcmartin
I really like the layout and it is a nice quiet place to spend an hour or so looking for books. The staff is also friendly.
I am giving three stars because, as it is called the "Scholar", for the past few years I have always assumed it was a place where you could go to study and have coffee and read.
This is not the case. The 30+ tables are all wobbly, round, high-tops that are not conducive or comfy for studying (regular height, sturdy, square tables are much better to spread out your HW on) and there is nowhere comfy to read that my girlfriend and I could find.
Also, on a smaller note. The "Matcha" latte is actually just a green tea leave latte so that was a little misleading and kind of a disappointment as it was advertised as matcha, not green tea. I will say, my regular iced latte was pretty good.
Overall, the place is nice but the atmosphere and furnishings do not foster a place where you want to hang out and actually do "scholarly things".
My main suggestion - get some new tables that are conducive for studying and spending time with friends discussing books etc. If you do that I would give 4 stars.
If you replace the green tea, with the matcha you advertise, I will give a 5.
Paulette Southerly
What an adorable little gem. I literally lost track of time browsing their old books in the basement. I could have stayed there all evening if it weren't for the people waiting for me. If you like books, and old books in particular, you have to check this place out.
Gary McCarthy
Really cool interior and a large selection of academic interests. Helpful and friendly staff. They have their own parking lot behind the building on Susquehanna if you're trying to find free parking.
Suhni Rasafire
This store IS great. The book selection is always great. Great books for all ages, education levels and interest. I recommend this shop to everyone. There's eats, entertainment & people. A great combination for fun.
nola bean
So cozy and the staff is amazing. They have great coffee and they have live music. They crowd there is great and the even have some classes. There isn't alot of parking but I go every weekend and plan on going back.
Rachel Luehm
The first time I went there I loved it. It has a great atmosphere, with a seemingly endless capacity for books to get lost in. I went again today with a list of books in the classic political theory genre -Tocqueville, Locke, Adam Smith, Rousseau, etc. and didn't find a single book. That's even after I consulted the "find-a-book" station, and went to the section it should be in, which is "organized" alphabetically by title. I told the clerk this and he just said "yeah, that happens a lot. It's not very well organized." It's frustrating to me because in the age of Amazon I chose to drive 50 minutes from Lancaster to support an independent bookstore but it seems like I care about this place staying in business more than they (owners/workers) do.
Thomas-Lee Thomas
It's full of books. No really it's a great place to get some quiet time in and a good read. Nice coffee selection but i would like to see some tea as an option.
Brian Frey
I will need to explore this exciting bookstore when I have more time to spend perusing.
Edward Sandfort
Very cool place with an interesting atmosphere. We were there for a book signing event so did not have a great chance to explore. If ever back in Harrisburg I would like to go back to check it out.
Anthony Burkholder
Lots and lots of books! And great coffee.
Vince Giordano
Nice environment with comfy seating and other tables with outlets. Books are overpriced (as most book stores are) and the coffee is very overpriced (and tastes bad). Sketchy neighborhood with scattered parking.
obi martin
A museum of culture, atmosphere, and vibe. The midtown Schollar carries a remarkable collection of literature, in a space broken up into dozens of open, separate rooms that breeze into one another facilitating grazing very naturally. The collection of current literature in the main gallery will revive your faith in contemporary art, and the underground plethora of classics will keep you grounded in antiquity. This is a place of nooks, from the upper story outdoor balcony, to the side-basement art alcove, to the low-key conferences rooms just-so shielded from reality by the children's sections.
Daniel Adamec
Good selection, nice environment (there's coffee, lots of seating options at varying levels of seclusion, and a quiet area). Prices vary, but seem fair. Finding a parking space can be tricky.
Ralph Foote
I visited this place on Thursday with a friend and the service was horrible. A guy and "especially" the red headed girl demonstrated service that was completely unacceptable. We waited for 15 minutes and still were not acknowledged until I spoke up. If she lives on tips, I am sure she lives at poverty level. Don't waste your time. There are too many coffee places on Third St that provide great customer service.
Bill Taylor
If you love books and live within a hundred miles you have to check this out. Modest cafe but right across the street from the Broad St market. Not the same scale as Powell's in Portland OR but same vibe. This is smack in the middle of one of Harrisburg's revival neighborhoods
C. Miller
Extremely abundant selection of history books, with old, rare and highly technical books in stock. Good selection of fiction and general audience nonfiction; section markings are unorthodox in some areas (e.g. "Creative Non-Fiction") that may be confusing or introduce one to new and exciting books depending on the situation. The new science section currently seems understocked, however, and largely targeted towards popular audiences rather than technical pieces.
Amanda Witters
Prices were a little high, the manager or owner was not pleased with the lures being set up there for a Pokemon Go event, and overall just seemed like an unfriendly atmosphere. Maybe if the event was going on against the owner's better wishes it'd have been a nice place to visit.
Anthony Young
They have an amazing amount of books, however I've been unable to find any of the four books that I was looking for. The customer service is so so, on my last visit a young sweetheart was trying to help me when the gentleman that work there came up behind her and basically shut her down and told her to stop helping me instead of minding his own business and staying in his lane.
Brendan Loewen
Whether you're doing research for a book or paper or you're just enjoying a cup of coffee while you check Facebook, this wonderful bookstore is worth your time. They host local music artists and the owner is now the mayor of Harrisburg. Definitely worth going, even if it's only once.
Brandon B.
Huge selection of used books on a scale that is hard to find almost anywhere. They now have a selection of curated new books that seems to grow larger and larger, and will make you want to walk out with far more than you can actually hope to read. They're also host to all kinds of community events, and the cafe is usually filled with buzzing minds and conversations. Harrisburg wouldn't be the same city without this place.
Andrew C
Visited the area and wife is a bookworm so in we went. Books galore with three floors
Of shelves and many new and used books for sale. Nice place to get a coffee and browse
Christie Fox
An old fashioned independent bookstore selling new and used books. They sponsor wonderful writers' programs. Lots of seating and a small Cafe with good coffee and pastries.
Jason Giusti
Amazing book store. Their selection of used art and artist books is extensive.
Adam Benfer
Very large book store with every type of book, textbook imaginable. With 4 floors it can take a while to get through. Check out the rare book collection in the basement with dozens of books prior to 1800 and 1900. The little restaurant and bakery is a great place to get an egg sandwich.
Angel Mercado
Great place, good coffee.
Cameron Gilbert
Awesome place! Great coffee!
Bobby L.P.
Great variety of books. The cafe serves delicious coffee, drinks, and baked goods. Its also a great place to sit and work. Great staff too.
Tj Thomas
The gem of Harrisburg. This bookstore is something you'd expect in a much bigger city. Several authors I've seen from different countries have all commented on how impressive Midtown Scholar is in terms of presentation, variety, and the cafe. Harrisburg wouldn't be the same without it.
Katie H
A gem in the city of Harrisburg. The serve coffee, tea, and chai. A maze of used books including rare pieces and well-known as a print shop hiding downstairs. A great place to visit and explore. People are welcome to relax and read here.
Jason Hunt
Bookstore focused on nonfiction, classics, rare, and scholarly works with a nice event space. Their coffee shop has good coffee and a selection of snacks from other local businesses.
cody ohira
Coolest bookstore I've ever seen. Has every kind of book you need/want, a cafe, and a seating area upstairs, perfect for bookworms, students or anyone looking for a good read.
safety steve
Easily the best bookstore I have ever been to. If you love books and coffee in a good atmosphere you will want to spend a good amount of time well spent here.
Josh Peters
The outside of the bulding makes it aeem a bit small and like it wont be to big inside, but then comes the suprise when you enter. What do you see? An expansive collection of used books! The books are divided into categories and each one is clearly marked, room after room. You can also get something to drink or snack on while you are here. A must see for book lovers.
Marina Radanovic
I can (and do) spend hours here.
David Kushmeider
So big, awesome selection of books from all topics, including historic books and original prints. Super friendly staff, super knowledgeable, and the in store bakery on the "2nd" level is outstanding. Try their pies!
Cherie Moore
I love the Midtown Scholar. It's a very relaxing place to have coffee tea and look at all the books they have just about everywhere! They even have a bakery and a play space for small children.
Helen Tafesse
Amazing variety of books available and plenty of seating considering it's a book store and not a library. Coffee is good, but nothing special 😁 …
Eric
Fun bookstore with many neat finds. Beautiful artwork inside during normal times and small Cafe with great drinks of caffeinated beverages
Emily Suda
favorite place to spend my free days. always quiet and calm, and has the biggest book selection in the area. live music and poetry readings occasionally, and everything is fairly priced. free Wi-Fi as well.
Cori Frede
We came here after dinner nearby. This bookstore is a charming place I wish was closer to where I live. I'm honestly not sure if it was an artisan coffee house that sold books or a bookstore with good beverages.
Edward Joseph Allgood
I've been going to this location for a few years now. The selection is really spectacular. They also have a huge warehouse of books off site which you can order through there website. My book was ready for pickup in 2 days.
Kurt Miller
Super bookstore in downtown Harrisburg. A good selection and mix of new and used books. Immaculate condition. Great coffee shop and Cafe. You can't go wrong here!
David V
One of the only places I always go when I find myself in Harrisburg. Probably the best book selection organized in an understandable fashion in the state. Very open minded and open atmosphere all around.
David Yates
Awesome place to find a good book, enjoy a coffee, snack, or maybe even catch a band when they have them. I recommend combining it with a trip to the Broad Street market, which is right across the street, our even taking advantage of some other midtown stops.
Jessica
This is an amazing bookstore - there are a ton of books for you, no matter which genre you’re looking for. There are seats for people to sit and drink some coffee downstairs (and upstairs). A book lover’s dream bookstore!
Katie Ruth
I love browsing the used books here as well as exploring and discovering new authors. Great selection and friendly staff.

love this place with my whole heart!
Jill Kobeissi
I never go to Harrisburg without visiting this store! Friendly helpful staff. Nice place to meet neighbors. New books and sidewalk sales if used books. Cafe inside.
Daniel Johnson
This is a great place to come visit. Whether you want to buy books, just sit and read for a while, get some work done on a laptop or something. You can even have books ordered in for you and there is a great selection for all. Give it a shot
Vance Johnson
Great store, but I wish they had separate sections for popular genres like mystery and sci-fi and fantasy, etc. Hard to discover new works and authors when they're mixed in with literature in general.
Elijah Wagner
I might be biased, but I'd argue this is the best bookstore in central Pennsylvania if not the entire state. Books galore! They frequently bring in authors for intimate evenings and the coffee is quite spectacular.
John A. Royston
Large and cozy. Many shelves packed full of old and new treasures. Good coffee or tea and many places to just sit and relax and enjoy reading.
Cedar Fleeger
Good coffee and tea bar and I like the atmosphere and the art upstairs, but the nonfiction isn't organized by anything more than general subject matter. Never found anything I wanted enough to buy it there.
Tom Moslak
Local, unique, great architecture, ambiance out the wazoo.
Lisa Howald
I confess, I come here for the coffee and tea, not the books. They also do interesting events, author talks, concerts, etc. A great place to hang out. Dog-friendly.
Morgan Rose
Heaven on earth, my jaw hit the floor the first time I walked in. If you were ever jealous of Belle in Beauty in the Beast because of the library she recieved, this is your place to go. You could spend days here combing the shelves finding all sorts of unique treasures.
gary l
Good coffee and lots of books. Great atmosphere to wander around sipping coffee and browsing books. Free music events are cool too.
Almara Hutchinson

I bought a difficult-to-locate book from Midtown Scholar Bookstore this week. I wrote to ask for quick shipping and paid just a little extra to cover the postage. Two days later, the book was in my Seattle mailbox, well packaged and in perfect condition! I couldn't be happier. Thank you!!
Amy Alleman
I love this place; wooden floors; great selection of books and other fun merchandise; coffee and snacks; quiet and respectful atmosphere.

This is a great neighborhood resource. It actually feels more like a library than a commercial bookstore. There's a cute café at the front, and an interesting antique prints shop in the basement.

Bellicimobambina
Such a warm and cozy atmosphere. Lowkey nice events, wonderful selection of books. Bakery, coffee/tea, childrens area.. lovely.
Michael B. Ford Jr.
Great concept. Inventory is hit or miss. Did not have the book I was looking for, but also did not expect them to (limited appeal, military specific topic). Will return for other titles in the future.
Paisley Ashland
This bookstore is amazing! My family and I spent an entire day there and left with smiling faces. Whatever your interest you will find information about it here!
Chris Constantine
Full service coffee bar and overflowing used books on three floors of organized shelves in nooks and crannies. The largest selection of art and architecture books of the 100+ used bookstores I have browsed countrywide.
Caelan Hess-Shelton
Lovely little place. Has a cafe for coffee and other food inside as well, at the cash register.
MsForeverjoyful
Omg this bookstore is such a great find. As soon as you think you've found the end of the store, nope it keeps going. If you love books or old buildings it's a must see.

Simply the literary linchpin of Pennsylvania's capital region. This is an incredible store for the serious reader. Beyond that, a cultural treasure for an area that needs it very much. Midtown Scholar makes this a better place to live, in fact.
Joe Bedard
Wow! You wanna check it out. Any visitor to Harrisburg will want to include the Scholar along with seeing the Capitol Rotunda, Broad Street Market and Riverfront Park. Over 200,000 books. World class independent bookstore.

Amazing collection of art books. Also make sure to check out Robinson's Rare Book and Fine Prints in the basement. The breadth of these collections is absolutely incredible.
Tim Frye
This is the perfect place to come and wander between the stacks. So easy to get completely lost in that good way where you lose track of time. I always end up with a longer wish list.
Scott D
