Reviews of Books & Mortar
Ryan Gravelle
Lovely bookstore. Great selection for the size. Very well kept. Support local bookstores!
Courtney Kliss
Best bookstore in the state IMO! Staff is absolutely lovely, selection is inspiring and well curated. Being a customer and book club member during my time in GR was so special and I miss it all the time since moving. Books & Mortar cares about people, the city, and the environment and it shows in what they promote and the community building they inspire. This place is a huge pick me up on a bad day, and an inspiring and safe space when things feel tough. Good work is being done here, it’s so much more than a bookstore.

Went in here a few days ago traveling out-of-state and oh my goodness this might be the cutest book store I have ever been to! It is small but everything is so well organized and cozy plus its full of local artist products too! Will definitely come back everytime im near Grand Rapids now!
Michael
Interesting and diverse collection of books of subjects you'd be unlikely to find at any other bookstore.

Favorite bookstore in town, hands down. Jenny, the owner, is wonderful as is her staff. The book selection is always on point and very well rounded. It’s a great stop for anyone who loves a good book or who may be looking for a gift. Plus, it’s a safe space for all readers.
Erin Arrowood
I absolutely love this bookstore. They have a wonderful collection of books, they support teachers, are diverse and inclusive, and work extremely hard to build our community. I am beyond lucky to have this shop in my neighborhood!
Kayla Benda
The kind of business that deserves way more than five stars. They stand up for what they believe in while providing a safe space for every type of reader. And I mean books. Come on.
Jessie Guerrero
Not only is the space welcoming for all, the continual commitment to social justice is a huge draw for us to keep coming back. Great people, great books and everything a bookstore should be.
Matthew Curry

Love the selection here! You can tell the owner is a huge book lover and is an advocate for women’s rights. There’s a really good selection on human rights books.
Sarah Drevon
Beautiful shop and great selection. Love having them close on Cherry St.! A true GR staple nowadays.
Colby Perry
Fantastic, progressive bookstore that is great for anyone. If they don't have the book in question, they can easily order it for you. The recommended reading is always a dive into something new for me too.
Keegan Kallmyer
Best local book store in GR. Have never had a problem getting a book.
Hannah Taplin
I have been a regular at Books and Mortar for years! If you are looking for a wide selection of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, etc and a competent staff who will give you recommendations and order books promptly and keep you informed about your order, look no further than Books and Mortar! Jenny and her team are so kind and friendly and are always willing to go above and beyond for their customers and their community. I cannot sing their praises enough.

This bookstore was a charming place in a happy neighborhood of Grand Rapids. It has books of many genres of books, children's stories, journals, cards and stickers. Jess was such a happy and upbeat bookseller. It was a joy to talk with her. Please support this local bookstore.

This is one of loveliest little book stores I've ever known. A great selection of books, helpful booksellers, and a cozy environment to spend time in. Always a stop on my list for gifts and browsing.
Kaleb Hermes
A very trendy and modern bookstore! A lovely quiet store with a plethora of new books. If you’re looking for something older this place might not have it, but it’s cute, quaint and quiet in a lovely part of Grand Rapids! Worth a visit if you’re in the area!
Candice Hope Littleton
Love this shop! The owner is the sweetest and it's a wonderfully curated selection. They also host a number of events for the community. They're also happy to special order any books you may be looking for. I highly recommend this book shop to everyone/anyone!
Jessica Hidalgo
If they don't have the book you're looking for, let them know and they often will order it for you and give you a call when it's in! They also give great book recommendations if you're not sure what to read next. Why buy books from anywhere else?
Michelle Kitler
Really cute in here! Small little bookstore. When I went it was very crowded and there was a book reading going on so it was a little uncomfortable trying to maneuver through the store and not feel loud or in the way. Seems like a lovely place for the reading community though! I stopped in for a children’s book. They had a lot of really unique books and some old favorites like Dr Seuss books. They just didn’t have any of the ones I was looking for. I’m glad this little spot is in our community! I’ll definitely stop in if I’m ever in search for a unique book!

Books & Mortar is a charming book shop located on the beloved Cherry Street. 🍒 Known for their diverse selection, beautifully curated space, cheery staff recommendations, and darling cards, Books and Mortar complements the East Hills neighborhood perfectly! 💛
Remember to stop in for a book (or 2 or 3) before you head on your next vacation. 😎
(This is also your friendly reminder to stop buying them from Amazon. 🤗)
Esther M
Cute bookstore that was warm and welcoming! I love the window display 🤩 …

We'll be moving to this neighborhood in a couple months, so this weekend we walked around a bit to check things out. I love bookstores, and when I saw Books & Mortar, I knew we had to check it out. I was not disappointed. As a bookworm, I've been in many a bookstore all over the world, and this was one of the overall best. Careful selection of books and gift items, obviously a huge focus on the local community, and you walk in and it has a friendly, welcoming vibe. I bought a few items, and I'm now even more excited about our upcoming move because it means that I'll be biking over to this place regularly... I might need more bookshelves.
Amy Sue Williams
Wonderful little store! She's got exquisite taste in books, and she covers a wide array of topics, including explaining death to children, LGBTQ issues, women's issues, and our immigrants. Soft jazz in the background makes shopping pleasant.
Maria Krug
This is my favorite local book store! The owners are kind and knowledgeable. If I don't see what I'm looking for they will find a way to order it! They promote local authors and artists; and promote community. Simply put, I adore them!
Dani Truss
Really friendly staff and great selection of books, games, art, cards etc. It's great to have a bookstore so close.
Krista Hausermann
This is my favorite bookstore. The books are carefully chosen. There is a well-balanced variety between new books, classics, fiction, and non-fiction on a variety of topics. I have never bought a book here that I haven’t enjoyed reading.
Hunter Hubers
Very accommodating for book orders. So far each book has been cheaper or on par with Amazon's prices. Highly recommend getting books locally instead of online! Books & Mortar is great.
Abigail Miedema
In my very biased opinion, this is the best local bookshop in GR. They had excellent community events during non-covid times, and have always been my favorite source for ordering books (including books for school)!
Kristen Anderson
I came in here for the first time on Independent Bookstore Day this weekend. What a great experience. Really great selection. The staff was really helpful. Can’t wait to read all of my new books.
Laura J.
They had the book I was looking and the staff is really friendly. Lots of unique titles too.
Susan Wygmans
Outstanding! What a great local bookstore - and live music tonight!
Nick J.
A great variety of books and cards. Quirky typewriter set up in the corner for sharing messages. They can order any book and have it in store for pick up within a few days. Will definitely be back.
Rebecca Gast
Stopped by Books & Mortar on my lunch break to pick up some books for a young relative's birthday. The owner was knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. He and Chris clearly put a lot of time and consideration into their inventory; he was able to talk in depth about each book he recommended. I left with some great books, and I'm looking forward to going back!
Emma Tongue
This is hands down my favorite book store in Grand Rapids. The book selections are always stunning, the staff so friendly, and the decoration and displays are artful to say the least.
andy jeffery
Small locally owned bookstore. Nice selection of hard and softcover books. Selection of current themed topic books. Paper goods, journals and pens also!
Alex Benda
An amazing pillar of the community in the short time they have been here. We love going in to see the latest and greatest. They do a great job of taking a giant bookstore and removing all the books that are just ok. Every book is carefully selected and makes leaving without a book a serious problem.
Anna Yakey
If you're looking for trashy YA novels that are thinly veiled wish fulfillment for lonely misunderstood teenage girls who need an unstable teenage boy to give them an identity, then this is not the book store for you. This is a carefully curated book-museum where you can buy the works of art. The staff are h*ckin' friendly and the books are arranged in an aesthetically pleasing way that draws your eye along until you find the piece of chopped up tree guts that most tickles your fancy. 14/10 would purchase poetry here again
Wesley Machiela
A small very cozy bookstore just outside of downtown Grand rapids. Their selection of books is quite good with everything from mysteries, history, fiction, they also have a selection of social justice issues.
Teaghan Lathers
I have loved every book I purchased here. This is a locally owned book store with friendly staff. They are very inclusive, with books on all types of topics, including women's impowerment, politics, and fiction. They also have young adult and kids' sections.
Kelly Boston
Amazing book store! They curate high quality titles and can order anything they don’t have. Charming and beautiful shop, just like the owners! ;) Highly recommend!
Ben Pugh
I have never been in this store. I grew up in the city in which it resides, however; the live reading of the in-constructive criticism has touched me. Please visit everyone here and if you are not able to purchase a book out of their selection at the time, at the very least say hello and ask how they are. True G’s in the grand city. The End.
Mike Klompstra
A cozy little bookstore in a great location. If you're looking for some birthday, graduation, etc. cards - this is a great spot for that as well! If you find yourself on Cherry Street, definitely pop in here to check it out!
