Reviews of Argos Comics & Used Book Shop
This book store is like finding a diamond cut jewel in the rubble. The owner was knowledgeable about different vintage comic books my fiancé was looking to purchase. Just all around delightful visit away from my everyday busy life. Everything is so computerized nowadays it was a pleasure to feel the fabric and textures of the different books 📚
My husband has been going to this shop for 35 years. I have been going here for 8 years. There is something for everyone. Literally everyone. If you're looking for it, they most likely have it. Amazing shop that I (admittedly) spend a lot of money at! New owners are working diligently to spruce up and reorganize everything. It's a great place to spend the day!
Lovely store, was recently bought by new owners who are trying to keep its nostalgia intact. Comics are a bit poorly organized and difficult to access for someone of moderate height (I'm 5 6') but I think they'll be fixing that soon. Massive amount of vintage books as well.
Great place. Roger knows his comics. I brought in a crate full and he made honest opinions of each and paid me well. In fact almost 3xs more then a competitor.
We had a wonderful time here, the new owner was so nice and has done such an amazing job cleaning up the place. The ambiance was really cute and there were tons of interesting books.
Great used book store! Two rooms with packed shelves and a broad selection. I've gotten good sci fi here on multiple occasions.
great place. the place has a new owner and is a nice guy. I do miss Jim though and hope he is doing well in his retirement.
The bookkeep was so so nice polite an told me an my friends about the history of the place, an it was beautiful to see her passion come to life thru her words about the beauty of the place like "unearthing all these forgotten books" made the experience so much more fun , like I was in a movie, would definitely recommend checking this place out. Super cute an cozy.
Today was my first time in Argos. They have a wide selection of used books. I left with four books of poetry and will be back for more I'm sure!
This is an awesome used book store - huge selection and the books are in really good shape. The store is well organized and clean and has that nice cozy vibe that I love in used book stores. I think the owner was there while I was, an older gentleman who was very nice and let me poke around 15 minutes after they were closed!! I did think the prices are a bit high for used books, but I was fine paying more, since I love to support used book stores, and my books were in good shape. I would definitely come back here the next time I'm in the Grand Rapids area!
Awesome used bookstore!!! The new owners (as of 2022) know local history, have great recommendations, and have generous discounts for kids' books to encourage reading.
The owners of this store are knowledgeable and friendly. They create a welcoming atmosphere and I highly recommend this place.
A very fun bookstore with a good range of books in almost every category including comics, science fiction, and poetry. A mainstay for decades, it's easy to see why
Super cute bookstore! Not a ton of classics when I went, but a good selection of other genres. Prices were reasonable. I recommend popping in if you're in the area!
An incredible, eccentric atmosphere for all book lovers ❤️ The owners are super friendly, kind, and provide reliable resources
A good place where you will find the written word to entertain you for the next week. Whatever your interest this is the place. It is like the analog Google.
Absolutely love this place, they have a great selection and staff are very friendly and knowledgeable
Listen is place is great! The new guy Rodger is a great guy and very friendly. I was here years back and had a bad experience with the old owner making me feel like I was a bother more than a blessing. But all that has changed, Rodger has this place humming.
Great selection of books and comics with a very friendly owner.
Amazing store full of good books and comics!
There is nothing like the scent of books, the sound of turning pages, and the sight of shelves of unexplored adventures to bring joy to the heart and peace to the soul.
Argo's is a wonderful place to browse for interesting reads, find local history, or find the missing comic to complete your collection. Every visit is like a five star get away.
Fantastic selection. A great place to find both cheaper paperback copies of classic books and well priced rarer books as well. The owner is extremely nice and great to talk to. One of my favorite bookstores in Grand Rapids.
Intresting place with funny finds. It's like a treasure hunt for literary minds. If you love book this is a fun place to go visit.
An excellent selection of used science fiction and fantasy novels plus comics. Been going there since the 80's. Staff has been consistently helpful and knowledgeable. My first choice for used books.
UPDATE 4/30/22: Grand Rapids has many things to be proud of but none more than the city's best independent book store.
Mind you, I love Redux and Books & Mortar, too, and those proprietors are great. However, Argos continues to gets it right. Roger and his Julianne Moore look-a-like wife (Forgive me in forgetting her name) have taken over the reigns and built on it - losing none of its charm and relevance.
April '21: This is the quintessential big city used bookstore in a small city.
Sections are well marked. Selections are vast, varied and very reasonably priced. IMHO the best used bookstore in GR.
Solid selection of classics, philosophy, theology, history, traditional trades, and beautiful books in general. I bothered the owner frequently to find the next section of my pursuit, and he was always happy to assist. Not much more I could ask for in a bookshop.
Argos Book Shop is one of Grand Rapids’ hidden gems. They have a wide selection of material. Philosophy, Gender Studies, Religion, History, Sci-fi, Fiction, Comics, Classics, Art, Etc. You can even find the occasional signed copy. If you live in the city or are here on a trip be sure to stop by. You won’t regret it.
Great local book/comic shop with a huge selection. Prices are reasonable and I could definitely spend hours browsing. You'll have to do a bit of searching to find specific authors or books but the shelves are generally organized by topic so it's easy to narrow down where to look.
There is not a ton of elbow room due to the immense quantity of books in such a small space, so it may be difficult to navigate the store at peak business hours.
Nice small used bookstore. Fun place to rummage the shelves and floor stacks for gems.
Great book store, lots of great finds
One of the largest used bookstores I have ever been to. Very friendly staff and a wide selection was available there. It was easy to spend an hour browsing books. They also have a wide selection of comics to pick from. Highly recommend the visit if you’re looking for something new to read.
Loved this store. It's not the place to go to if you're looking to run in, grab what you want and get out. Set aside a little time to browse. Books are horizontal, vertical, on the floor, and on the tops of bookcases. Somewhat alphabetical, so it's not total chaos. Just the right amount of chaos.
I find that what makes a used bookstore are the staff/owners. The man behind the counter was the perfect mix of friendly and helpful, without being at all intrusive.
Decent collections of fiction and sci-fi, and my son was thrilled with the comic book section which seemed pretty extensive to me.
a wonderful example of the small local bookstore this place has many different offerings for the local bibliophile as well as a diverse collection of comic books for any geek fandom. I highly recommend taking a few minutes to browse to find your next favorite book.
Nice store for back issue comics. They have a LOT of nice stuff at nice prices, and the owner is friendly and helpful. However, the store is very disorganized. I had to hunt a little bit for what I was looking for, because he wasn't sure where it was, and some of the back issues aren't filed in any order. With a little time sorting and organizing (and maybe some new shelves), I would give this place an extra star.
Great books. Great store history. Great staff. What more can you ask for? Love this place!
Argo's is always one of my favorite places to go. While their book selection is without a doubt superb, I primarily go for comic books. Today, I made a purchase that I wanted to make the last TWO times I was in Argo's, but was never able to make due to short funds
For anyone who loves an old bookshop - the smell of dusty old papers, the teetering piles of books, the shelves crammed to the ceiling with books of every subject, new and old, this place is for you. My kids had a blast in the children's section, and I found a few treasures myself. Lots of fun to roam around in.
Run by a super-nice guy who's clearly passionate about his business. I've been coming in here for years because you can always find some obscure treasure in the stacks of books. I really wish the comic back issues were better organized. It's pretty obvious that they gave up on organizing their back issues years ago, which makes it tough to find what you want. I'd probably buy many more comics here if not for that. Still a great spot for books, old magazines, and anything else on paper.
Absolutely love Argos. It is my favorite place to shop in GR. The book selection is extensive and ever changing. He has quite a few extremely rare older books and an extensive knowledge of the books in his shop. The owner is very friendly and is always willing to help or answer questions. The place is cluttered and there are books everywhere, but I think that just adds to the ambiance.
The comic selection is amazing! They always have what I'm looking for.
Nice shop, nicely organized with helpful service.
What a fantastic selection! Expect to spend at least an hour in there, there is so much to see! It's a little chaotic in some areas but that's just because there are so many books! They have everything from sheet music to autobiographies. The owner is super chill, too.
Cool old book store vibe with a helpful friendly owner. He has lots of plans to improve customers' experience. There are treasures to be found there.
Unique used book store with a very good new and used/vintage comic book collection. I have very often found what I was looking for here. Organization is an issue (as with any used book store?) so recommend you ask staff for assistance as they seem to have a knack of finding things when they aren’t where they should be.
This place doesn't quite have the book selection as Redux does. It also doesn't have quite the selection of classical or collectors items. If you like comic books then they will have some options for you. I always enjoy going to this place when I visit Grand Rapids.
First time in. Horror selection was sparse (it always is though). Still managed to find a couple good ones to add to my collection. Also didn't really look over the comics too much but I will definitely be back to do so
Been going there for years. Argos has a gigantic selection of new and used books and other literary items. Jim, the proprietor, is a great help in finding what you need. Check it out, you won't be disappointed!
Nice place, they have alot of good books and comics!
I love walking into an old book shop with creeking floor boards with books to the ceiling. You smell the pages and ink the momwnt you open the door. A readers heaven. Comics and youth new and old. Two rooms to browse and select from.
Stepping into this store feels like stepping back in time. I love that they have thousands of comics but do wish they would put some effort into making them more accessible / organized. That being said, it's hard to get too upset due to this place just bursting from the seams with books and comics.
My favourite place to go. It smells of old books and has a great collection. Feels very cozy & it's a great experience. Really nice owner too.
So helpful! Came in to just browse and ended up picking up comic series. Wonderful family business!
The bookseller was very helpful. He was incredibly knowledgeable about his inventory; in regards to several genres. I happily purchased rare editions of several different books. Highly recommend.
Excellent book/comic store! Definitely not organized by any means, but sifting through piles of stuff to find treasures is always fun.
The owners are super friendly and helpful.
Cluttered and eclectic!! So many surprises if you dig around enough. I loved it.
Wonderfully eclectic collection of books and comics. Somewhat disorganized and messy, but charming. One could easily spend hours looking through centuries worth of books; from bestsellers to oddities and technical manuals.
Lots of books at great prices
They did not have the genre I like.. if you are looking for paranormal young adult don't go here, but otherwise it was nice 💁🏼♀️ …
Wonderful book store! There were so many books I didn't know where to start! I'm glad I visited.
Lovely shop with an eclectic selection of books. Picked up some interesting finds!
New owners...very nice couple! I'll be back!
They have lots of great books but unfortunately they don't have anything about Donald Trump, flat earth theory, information about how to circumvent age of consent laws or anything else related to modern conservatism.
It has books so it gets credit just for that. Overpriced. So many books piled on the floor one would think there would be more interest in selling rather than collecting. Still, there are always interesting finds one can't find elsewhere.
Argos is a Grand Rapids standard, a place where its sagging shelves contain about every title ever printed, from First Edition classics to magazines and lots more. Talk to Jim Bleeker or one of his helpers, with their encyclopedic memory of information, who will guide to make the best choices with you, and (shhh) bargain with you over the prices. You can find just about everything there. If you don't see what you're looking for, just ask.
In Grand Rapids I've always gone to this shop exclusively to satisfy my needs as a bibliophiliac. Why? Because they're the absolute best, most important shop in the entire city.
I love this store, old comics, old books, a wandershoppers delight. Staff incredibly friendly and helpful.
Mine was a pretty short visit but I'll be going back as soon as I'm back home! I loved being inside the shop for as long as I was
Argos is a Grand Rapids institution. Good prices and friendly staff. Don't be fooled by the slight disorganization. This place has gems waiting to be found for those willing to look.
Without a doubt this is a prime example of the type of local businesses that make our community great.
Sharp management and great book selections.
Nice shop. Great selection of books and comic books. However, disappointed with the attitude of the clerk I experienced. Asked a question and it was brushed off.
Best used book store! Has a good feel to it! Many new and old comics to look through as well!
An iconic Grand Rapids landmark. A classic used book and comic book store that has warmed the hearts of generations of readers young and old.
Awesome little book shop! Lots of old books and new. If you're into comics lots of old new of these as well.
Fun little shop. Some real gems here if you take the time to look. Good selection of comic books too.
Easily one of the best used book stores in Michigan. The only place I can think of off the top of my head that compares is the Dawn Treader in Ann Arbor.
What a great comic spot, plan to spend time here, not very organized, but super great collection. Will be back.
Great bookstore! Not for the cheap, good quality books in really good condition. Worth going to.
Great atmosphere! Feels like an old book store should! Friendly and helpful.
Owners (new in 2022!) Are super cool and very helpful. Worth a stop in
Great used book store. They have a variety of book types and ages. You can also find many comic books.
My favorite bookstore, great atmosphere.
My favorite book store, has been around at least 30 years.
Good used selection. Always find something fun to read. Been here many times when in Grand rapids.
Great selection of used books and new and back issues of comics.
This is a decent used bookstore with a wide selection of older titles, though their speciality appears to be comics.
I've been going to Argos since the 1980's and it remains one of the best used book shops in west Michigan.
A great place to buy books and comics! And they recive the latest volumes regularly. An A+ from a comic nerd!
Knowledgeable and helpful new owners with a passion for books and comic books!
The floors creak it smells like books and there is a cat. Been going there since I was a teenager
Good local store. Clean. Safe. Friendly staff. Organized. Worth the trip.
Nice stop on a snowy day
Great place for used books and a nice comic selection.
Cool place - a nice mix of books and comic books.
Love this place. All new comics are always discounted. Great selection of back issues.
My favorite spot to find collectable comic books and older books. I try to swing by as much as i can, always new stock available!
A unique experience in which my brain flies while I am in here. I am stimulated by the material here, through the ages and from far fetched places.
Great place to find used books and comics. They even have a section for RPGs.
Wooden floors of this beautiful place.
Open since 1975.
Best place for old books.
Great, old fashioned store. Has that old library smell. Nice prices.
Visiting Argos is like going on a treasure hunt. You never know what you'll find, and every visit offers something different.
Great store; decent selection of used books and comic books.
My daughter had never been to a "real" bookstore. This was an experience.
Friendly Staff, great selection of many current authors. Stop in & $ave.
Awesome used book store! One of the best in GR.
Awesome comic and book store...fun to wander among the bookshelves
The owners were very kind and professional!!
Everything a book nerd could ask for. Come when you have lots of time, there are new delights around every corner.

My favorite used bookstore. I always find something interesting. ALWAYS.
Pretty messy, but that only adds to the fun of searching for a great new read!
What a hidden treasure! Books of all types. Could spend hours there
Super cool place. Great selection.
I love this book store. It's like the sore in Never ending story
Cool old book store in Eastown. Seems comic heavy. Nice folks
Great used bookstore. Great place to spend an afternoon browsing.
I find something cool everytime I come in here. This time it happened to be a Mike Hammer hardcover.
A quiet place with a loud selection. Great place for bookworms to find a great book.
Just about everything there is when looking for books!
Lot of books. They have something for everyone. I am going back very soon.
Great used book store with friendly staff.
My husband likes shopping here for comic books.
Smells like old books! Towers of good reads of every genre.
Love this place every time I go find something always great been going here for ten years
The comic book selection is the best!
Lots of space and all of it is packed with books. Prices are right
Great selection, friendly and helpful employee. Fun shop.
I always buy something when I go because I always find something interesting I want.
It's a really chill place.
Decent selection but a little expensive and a bit disorganized.
Classic used bookstore where books are everywhere and you have to dig and search for treasures.

Great used book store!!!!!!!!!!!!
So many great options. The owners are super nice too!
We took my nephew there on a Saturday only because the other comic book store closer to us had just closed for the day & we already made promises to stop. We are SO glad we went off the beaten path to find this gem! There's some books up front & some old nostalgic creaky wood floors with a wide array of comic books in the back. As warm & inviting as this place was, the real selling point here is the gentlemen that mans the ship there! He was SO kind & knowledgeable & took the time to chat comic books with my nephew who's just starting to get his feet wet into collecting. He made some great suggestions, spread some knowledge on some sales/discounts & a few other things we may not have seen/thought of & helped us find some good ones that we'd like. We liked it so much ended up buying a gift card for nephews birthday in May because I know we'll be coming back! It's so nice to have someone take the time to educate & help spark a child's interest & be so knowledgeable to help guide him in the right direction. He didn't just talk about what he knows, he also took the time to listen to the kid & let him be heard too. THANK YOU to YOU who ever you are- Sorry I forgot to get your name! We will be back for sure! 😊🙏
