I walked into this store expecting a book store but I was delighted to discover an expansive selection of video games old and new, cd's, records, cassette tapes, and board games. Even with all the selection they still have an expansive book selection. I bought a fairly priced Wii game (Lego star wars the complete saga) it was only 10$! I'm planning on coming back soon to buy some more games and I'm so excited.

Good service. Supply seems to be very different since the pandemic though. I used to be able to find books with more familiar authors and a larger variety. That dynamic seems to have changed and the store isn't as busy as it used to be either.

Lots of different items here at decent prices. A vast collection of books (fiction and nonfiction), board games, records, craft kits, notebooks, stationary, random little fun items, etc. I only wish they had a bigger collection of spiral notebooks. They have lots of beautiful notebooks and sketchbooks but very few of them lay flat. PS If you can't find a certain book (and it happens to be more popular or from a popular author), ask them if they have it in the back.

I love this place when I’m in the market for a new book. My favorite thing to do when I’m not sure what I’m looking for is to meander through the isles and pick up the books with the most beat up spines and it never disappoints. The books here tell stories (no pun intended), and a few of them have even had sweet little notes from the people who gifted them. My husband and I go here once every couple months on a date night to pick out books and dvd’s. It’s clean, and it never disappoints

A visit to Half Price Books is ALWAYS on my errand list every time I visit Des Moines. I live two hours away but travel to town often to visit my hair stylist and friends that live there. I’m so bummed there isn’t a location closer to me, but HPB makes the trip so worth it. I feel more recently that they’ve taken more time to create sections for trending and popular books that make it easier for me to find what I would be interested in (I.e. Tik Tik Books Recommendations or Bookstagram Books). I love their buy back option and often bring books, get cash, and buy books with what I got back. I feel most books are priced very fairly! I also love the diversity of staff and feel this store is definitely a Safe Space. It’s also always quiet and I feel I can shop in peace and really take my time.

It's basically a second hand book store, you can walk in with 10 $ and 3-5 books used if you're looking for older stuff, some of the vintage video games and stuff are pricey but you're not there for that. There's a lot to digest in that store

Never disappoints! Able to pick up 6 kids books, several vintage books, and some sci fi for $25. They carry a fantastic collection of reading material. Plus they have gifts, DVDs, CDs, albums, and more. Super clean store and always plenty of staff on hand to help.

I was here with my daughter, came in 30 min before closing time. The guy at the counter was so nice and happy to be at work, even if he was checking me out 5 minutes before closing time. Other places I visit, employees have such an attitude of please go away, we about to close but this individual was happy to serve me. At the end he ended with a "You are very welcome!". I walked out satisfied with exceptional customer service! Please give that man a raise! (Store visit: 03-14-22 7:33 p.m.)

Love the Half Price Books experience. My wife was looking for a book that wasn't on the shelf. The checkout clerk helpfully checked the inventory of other stores and found several copies. He explained how we could take delivery if we wanted a copy from another location. Service above and beyond is always a pleasant surprise.

Good selection of used books. They have some new books as well. I like to buy my kids books from here since they tend to be a little rough with them. (I often find my kids sleeping with them.)

Great selection of books for ok prices. Some books were expensive, could maybe get a better price at a thrift store. It was selection that was worth it. Lots of books, always found at leasy one whenever we went. Did not sell books here (because the reviews were so bad)

Don't expect to get much for your books, but have to say the staff are very professional and this place is really well run. You can expect to get maybe $10-12 for an entire large bin of 50 books including really nice hardcover books that are fairly new. I get that they have to make money too and appreciate the clean, well-organized store and nice staff.

I like the franchise, books are well kept and organized at good prices with friendly staff. Both new and quite dated books with a wide variety of customers. I will say that this is a bit smaller size than the one I am used to in the Cedar Rapids area but still a nice spot.

Is a bit unusual for me meeting people like that but was definitely nice to experience.

I didn't have a lot of time so I needed to find my book/ go. I ask an employee for help. They knew the book/ took me right to it. They saved what would have been a long search. So it was great I was in and out in less then 10 mins.

Love this place. They don't always have what I'm looking for and some books can be hard to find if you don't know what you're doing, but the employees are always friendly and willing to help. The prices are great, sometimes they have great treasures on clearance. They are taking really great measures for Covid as well, by limiting amount of people per aisle/alcove and having one direction aisles. They also have an employee at the front directing customers and sellers. They also buy books, movies, and games. I've heard people complain about the prices they'll give you for your books, but I think they're fair. You have to consider the quality of your items and that they will be reselling them as well. I think this is a great deal too, plus they give you cash for your items, or you can take it off your purchases. I always try to stop in when I'm in Des Moines to treat myself.

This is the only Bookstore I care to visit most as it offers bibliophiles like myself tons of options to explore. The crew at this Half Price is very helpful and above all they are friendly and approachable, even when they are seemingly busy they stop what they are doing and offer help in searching for whatever it is you are looking for. You ask for a title and they'll seek it and help you find it. If its not in the store they'll deliver it to your home. Thank you guys for being awesome all these years!

I sell as well as buy books and magazines here. Everyone who works here really seems to enjoy their job, and is very knowledgeable on authors and various subject matters. Didn't find a particular book for a class I am taking and they looked online- at the register - and ordered for me. What a great place to buy a gift with so many types of items and prices to choose from. Good place for stocking stuffers for the holidays. I always find something I didn't realize I couldn't live without every time I visit.

They're taking the pandemic seriously & I appreciate it. Masks are required, there's a 30 minute shopping limit, one-way arrows are taped on the floor, 1-person limit in each alcove, and social distancing is encouraged. The cashiers sanitize after each sale. Currently, they're only buying 50 items at a time if you're selling. With all of these precautions in place, I felt very safe shopping there.

They have a great selection of books. The store is well organized. They are very selective in terms of what books they will buy from you. They are hands-off in terms of customer service, so you can feel free to browse as long as you want (dangerous!). It’s easy to lose track of time!

We stopped at this Half Price Books on our way back home to Minnesota. The store was large with a wide selection. I would rate t his as one of the best Half Price Books we have visited - large size, easy to walk around, clean and a good selection.

This is a good place to go for books, games, and music as I’ve got many things from this place. Friendly staff, but the gaming selection does not change very fast. The music section does change a lot. Quite a few new books when we go in every time. Recommend to any reader, musical persons, or gamer.

There is always and excellent selection of books and movies, both of which change often. The music section could be better utilized, which limits selections, but overall it's adequate. I never pay full price for books anymore! They have a great selection of novels, a section of beautiful cards and journals, great clearance books in the front and back of the store, and a nice corner full of children's books for all ages (and another clearance section here as well!). The staff has always been friendly and knowledgeable in my experiences here as well. I always recommend HPB to my friends.

Great place to purchase used books at fair prices. Usually about the same cost as Amazon without the long wait for Media Mail Shipping. Staff is usually very knowledgeable and helpful! Now selling your books is a totally different story...pun intended! Penny's on the dollar! A book they will sell for $6.99 you will be lucky to get .50 (Fifty Cents) for!

They were very helpful, I brought in my list of my college books to see what I could possibly buy from them to save some money. They willing took the list and looked each book up. Sadly they did not have any of the books I needed as they were too new, but that still were wonderful at willingly helping us out. We also purchased a Kindle Fire from them, great price and they were wonderful at helping us out with that as well. Would definatly come back to this Half Priced Books when we are in the area again!

Will be taking other books/textbooks I no longer use here again when I get the time to sort them. This place is almost paradise. I treat it like a library, always shushing strangers and borrowing books that i intend to return after I'm done with them. That usually takes a while though, since I'm illiterate. So even though i have to payfor the books, I'm really saving money on late fees. They've got something for everyone here, and the stock is always changing. It almost feels like the book store in that old movie, The Never-Ending Story. It even has a cranky old man warning you not to buy the book in your hand, but I'm not sure he actually works there. It's all part of the experience, though. Speaking of experience, when the air comes on in this place, it sounds like a small explosion. Don't worry; they have bathrooms for this very reason.

If you're looking for any book at great prices, come here. As a student with no job, this place has saved me a lot when it comes to finding books for my summer assignments. There was a certain book I was looking for, I asked the cashier to help me. They said they didn't have the book. I was about to give up but he recommended I check with the people who handle books that had just come in to the store. Anyway, they were very patient and helped me find my book.

My entire family loves Half Price Books. My 11 year old says she would rank it 6 stars if she could. From metaphysical to self-help, there is something for everyone. They have a great selection of nonfiction novels as well. They also sell puzzles, journals, and collectable compilations.

It's my preffered book store, honestly. However, while this is not again them, I have a problem here. Emphasis on the I. I am constantly downsizing the amount of things I have and a not inconsiderable amount of book runs for cash has been made here. It doesn't matter if they give me fifteen bucks for a box, or two hundred. I will always go over to the cookbook section and walk out with two or three books over the cash over. Do you think they have a rehab for white women who impulse buy cookbooks?

If you want a good deal on books, this is the place. It's that simple. It's not Barnes & Noble, but just plain book store with a good selection, and good prices. Bless 'em, as book stores have a tough go these days.

Half Price has always been a mandatory stop whenever I've come up to Des Moines. You never know what you'll find when you look around, and I've come home with lots of new favorites I might not have stumbled on otherwise. The staff is generally quite courteous, and willing to help if I've had questions. And any time I need to clear out my personal library, it's easy to sell my books to the store.

There was less selection than the last time I went, but I guess that makes sense due to Covid. They also removed all of the chairs, again due to Covid. I took my 91 year old grandma who has limited mobility, and there was nowhere for her to sit, so we had to cut the visit short. It would be nice if they had something for people who can't stand for very long.

Great book store, I have bought and sold books here. Their selection does vary and I wish there was a way to search the inventory of a local store on the website, but this is a good place to discover new reads. If you are looking for a specific book though I recommend calling before making the trip.

It's like a library, but you get to keep the books you like for at least half the price they're worth. A huge range of subjects and focuses. And it really has the look and feel of an old-fashioned public library. My only negative comment is that I wish there was a directory that could be used to find specific books. There might be one that I'm not aware of. That might compel me to give it five stars. Other than that, it's great.

Definitely five stars! This store is easily one of my families favorite destinations for books when we are in the Des Moines metro. They have a nice varied selection of all kinds of stuff, I primarily buy transportation and military related items, my daughter goes for fiction and manga. We all goe for scifi. They have some sweet old game systems laying about for purchase as well. Plus records and movies!

If you want to buy from a local store then this is the one I check first. I have no qualms about buying a used book so this place works great. I get the book i want for much cheaper than had I bought it new. Sure to the nature of the reseller if there is a particular book then I suggest you call ahead to check it's availability.

Fairly standard HPB experience. I'm always a little disappointed by the lack of quality clearance music, but I guess beggars can't be choosers. I've just seen better at other locations. However, there are always a ton of great movies and books available.

The only reason I don't give it a 5 star rating is because they aren't good at pricing certain things such as video games. I can buy the same games for half the price online. They used to be better with their prices but they've gotten greedy. Their used board games sometimes cost the same as if they were new. Their movies, especially kids movies and anime, are priced too high. However, they have great deals on comics and clearance books. They have odd fun keychains and toys you can't find in every store. They always have rare and/or signed books and a lot of random cool stuff on the wall behind the cash registers which is awesome.

You can either walk in and waste an hour without finding anything to purchase, or load up on books and other goodies, there doesn't seem to be an in between, at least not for me personally. But the prices can't be beat for the great condition all the books are in.

Half price books is a place that always draws me in and I always end up leaving with way too many books! The store is cleaned and well organized plus the staff does not hound you but will be happy to assist if you need it. This is way better than the larger bookstore down the road that rhymes with farnes and croble, and also will give you fair prices if you want to sell selections from your precious collection. Would reccomend this over many bookstores any day.

Knowledgeable staff and great selection of books and games! My only issue with this place is the fact their credit card machines do not accept Veridian Credit Union debit cards when swiping, and their policy does not allow for non-embossed debit cards; therefore I have not been able to use my debit card at this location.

One of the bigger HPB's I have been too. Great selection. Everything is categorized even the clearance which is crazy because some HPB just throw it up on the shelf and you have to fend for yourself. The staff was very friendly and always available to help.

Half price books is not a good place to sell books because they won't accept several books, they won't offer much for the ones they do, and there is an age restriction for people that can sell books. Save a tree, get a kindle. Unless you need cheap books for college or something.

I've been in Des Moines for the better part of a year and wanted to find a used book store like McKay's back in Tennessee. Half Price Books fits the bill. The selection is not nearly as extensive as the Nashville or Knoxville., TN McKay's, but it's around as good as the smaller McKay's near my hometown in Johnson City, TN. Prices were all over the board - I thought some books were going for below market rate, others above it. The music selection was a bit lacking in diversity of genres and overall volume. The video game selection was very small. Movie collection was in line with expectations, but lots of VHS tapes were on the shelves. I can't see many people trading in VHS tapes these days. The worst part was that each genre of books was "walled in" by bookshelves on both sides. Only one or two people could reasonably fit in the genre's "nook." If the store expanded its music and video game selection and went to a straight aisle format, it would be a big winner. Since it's the only fish in this pond in Des Moines, it seems like it can coast with its current mediocrity.

So I went to the half price books store at 8:30 (clarified with the gal they closed at 9). At 8:40 I asked said lady where a certain type of book was and she pointed out the section In a condescending tone-rather short with me again she was. Nice dude walked me there etc. When I came back to check out at 8:50 (10 minutes before they closed) I swear that the same gal said, "Down here" so when I went to her register & asked, "Did you say down here?" to which she replied "Yes" then I said, "Is that a lot like I can help the next person down here?" To which she replied, "I said I can help you down here." I clearly should have asked if she was alright, "Did someone kidnapp you and force slave labour? Is someone drugging you? Is there a gunman near by? Should I put on my cape & speedo to save the day (in 9 minutes or less of course). I said nothing because maybe her other job is a dog trainer-point, call out commands like "down here boy, good doggie" I love this store, 1st time I have ever had a poor attitude & I have gone there for years! Since the prior location. Go there, buy books!
