This is by far my favorite bookstore in Chicago and we have many amazing ones. I’ve been going here for 20+ years, some of the original staff are still there. They are engaging and helpful when needed. They make good recommendations, and you can’t beat their sale section. As a broke 21yo who loved books, this allowed me to read much and often. And as a guy in his 40’s there something comforting in going there and seeing the familiar. Couldn’t gush enough about them. And I love that they change their bookmarks up over the years and still give them with every book. I’ve held onto a few of them.

I've been looking for a bookstore with a good Science Fiction and Fantasy section and I am so happy to have found it in Unabridged Bookstore. They have a large selection of classics along with new releases! I like that they hand write descriptions and reviews for books on the shelves to nudge and give quick overviews for some books. They have a great variety in all genres and some amazing staff! I was looking for a book and only knew a broad description of and immediately, the person helping me searched online for the possibilities, narrowed down the options for me, then retrieved it from a shelf for me! Not only was this great service, this interaction also displayed the experience, passion, and the care the workers here have! I already signed up for their newsletter and even bought one of their tote bag which you can bring in the future to get a discount on future purchases! Overall, I am happy to finally find a local bookstore to support! It was a great experience and I look forward to going back to buying books from here once I finish at least 3 books, but their sales are so tempting I might break my own rule!

One of the best bookstores in Chicago! I love the layout, selection, and the overall vibe of this store. You can find all the bestsellers here as well as more niche books curated around topics. I really enjoy reading the little signs explaining recommendations from the staff. A visit here left me feeling inspired to read more, which is definitely a good feeling to get from a bookstore.

Such a great time today at the Unabridged Bookstore; I was in there for over an hour and it only felt like 10 minutes! A large and diverse selection of books across all genres, and great prices were found here; but my favorite parts of this store are the suggestion/review cards that dot the book shelves and the displays of book suggestions by the friendly staff that work there. Highly recommend!

Its been quite awhile since I've been in the store, and I'm amazed how it hasn't changed, that's a good thing. The staff were quite helpful and friendly. I actually needed a book for a seminar I'm attending, I called to inquire and surprisingly they had it in stock and ready for me to pick up. In the past I've also called for books and they ordered for me. I'm so glad this book retailer is still open. In Lakeview and conveniently located on Broadway in Lakeview.

I loved that they had a whole section dedicated to sale books - I feel like you rarely see that in independent bookstores. They were good books too! I saw a hardcover copy of "Appleseed" for $10 - nice! The staff was friendly and they had a large, well organized selection of books. Great place to go for new books!

WE LOVE SUPPORTING SMALL BUSINESS! Also if you can't find what you want order it though a small business on their website. When my family asks where I'd like a gift card from for Christmas I'm gonna send them to their website. They have such a great selection, especially a great queer selection! The other day I purchased "A Woman's Affair" It was originally written in French in 1901 and was translated to English in 2021 and it was based on the authors affair with Natalie Barney, a fellow author. I would have no idea this book even existed and that's why we need bookstores.

Definitely the best bookshop in Chicago. Been coming here ever since COVID restrictions started lifting. They have an entire section dedicated to NYRB publications, which is a personal enjoyment (they're my favourite publishing house). Also excellent poetry section, in addition to LGBTQ+ lit. Overall, extensive selections across all genres, great vibes, and great gift options for sale also. Top recommendation.

Amazing selection of books on the north side. Has an outstanding LGBTQ+ section that has a wide range of genres in that subject, from the purely fun and interesting to the historical and serious. The store itself is cozy and smells like a book lovers dream. Endless amount of books that are organized and presented very well. You'll find what you're looking for and what you never knew you wanted The staff is friendly and helpful. They provide hand sanitizer from a local distillery, which is fun.

Unabridged Bookstore is a quaint store that adds a large number of personalized staff comments to aid book browsers. The place is stuffed with a great variety of titles and has the feel of an old tiime traditional book store.

Downstairs, they have the largest selection of travel books in Chicago. Compared to other Chicago bookstores, unabridged is clean and organized. Highly recommend a visit.

I really like the small and intimate space of this book store. We came here looking for books about Chicago for our nephew and with the help of I believe the book store owner we were able to find specific books that we had come in search of. I do think that the owner was a bit flustered when she arrived and noticed people (my husband and I) already waiting and the door for her to open, so she came off as being snippy when she asked my husband if he could step back from the door. I'm not sure what that was about but other than that encounter she was beyond helpful and even came from the front of the store several time to the area we were located to locate books for us that we struggled to find. I love supporting small, local businesses and will definitely order from this store in the future for any other books that I may need.

Fantastic book store. Jammed packed with options. But well organized. Lots of personal descriptions provided for books, staff picks really help. I loved the categories and flow of the store- like modern fiction or locally sourced reads. I could have spent quite a while longer here.

This bookstore is awesome! The shop itself, is massive. The staff is super helpful. The children's book section has amazing choice, not just your Dr. Suess basics. They carry an array of inclusive (read LGBTQ, POC, Female, etc.) Non fiction and fiction literature and reading suggestions too. They even have a couple of book clubs. I'll definitely be back.

I love the feel of this locally owned book store. The owner, Ed, and his staff handwrite suggestions for books which are scattered throughout the shelves. Their sale section is by far the best I've encountered and their LGBT section is also extremely impressive. I find myself wandering this shop for hours. For the space, they have an amazing selection without the overwhelming feeling I get at some other bookstores. Absolutely worth a gander if you're anywhere near the neighborhood. This place makes me want to spend all of my money.

Best bargain section in the city. There is a huge selection of books throughout the store, which makes quarters a little cramped, but everyone is aware and polite. I appreciate Unabridged Bookstore's large selection of curated literature. During my visit there, I found several intriguing titles that I doubt would have ever been suggested to me through an Amazon algorithm. Therein lies the charm of a classic brick & mortar bookstore; for a minute we leave our expectations of perfect recommendations and have the chance to explore the brilliantly illustrated covers of strange stories and essays that will transport us around the world and help us investigate foreign ideas, if only we let them. Unabridged gave me that feeling and it's what I love in a bookstore. It made me excited to read more when I got home. On top of that, it felt fun and had a nice layout. Because they sell New Books, the prices are a bit higher than what I'm usually after but that won't stop me from visiting their store again in the future.

Being a technology addict, I do not go to bookstores often. My wife is a physical book fan. We usually stop at this store on the weekends when we go for an afternoon walk. This place feels like a bookstore that you see in a movie. The staff is very friendly. The selection is very robust. They have a travel section in the basement that is pretty spectacular. Stores like this make me wish I liked physical books more.

Unabridged Books is a world-class bookstore that offers a huge selection of current and classic books in various subjects. It's the kind of place people used to associate with New York City, and it's here in Chicago. The front of the store is full of recent titles so that you can browse the offerings easily. The staff is very helpful in working with you to find what you need or to make suggestions. It's one of those rare places where you sometimes purchase much more than you expected and at the same time want to come back for more, because the offerings and atmosphere are so inviting. Unabridged has a full selection of Penguin books, Modern Library edition, and other standard sets. The literature section is unbeatable and stands out from many chain stores in the depth of coverage. Cookbooks are amazing, and it's hard to imagine a better selection of titles in a specialty shop, let alone a comprehensive bookstore like this one. Science fiction and fantasy is equally rich, as is the section on mysteries. Graphic novels and manga are also offered. DOn't miss the section on biography and the number of signed titles that are offered at no additional cost. The bookstore has a rich selection of gay and lesbian titles, and the discounted offerings are worth a browse. It's a fantastic store that must be seen. If you do not know it, visit it soon!

A cute bookshop with good staff recommendations and usually has the latest releases! A huge travel section. If you’re looking for anything specific it’s best to ask because of the way the store is laid out but once you get the hang of it, it’s pretty easy to navigate. I don’t recommend going into this store looking for a specific book though. More of a place to explore on your own and stumble upon your new fave. :)

Small nook in the wall bookstore in the Lakeview? neighborhood. I could tell this store has been in business for awhile, and is a part of the community. I imagine there are book-loving regulars that frequent the place often. The small size felt a little cramped, and there was not really any place to sit and read. Magazine selection was OK, not great. Book selection was vast and seemed to be curated nicely. The shelves felt a little cluttered, but they were organized. I would shop here again, but I wish it were a little more welcoming, shelves were touched up, and had a space to relax.

After trying the Amazon bookstore on Southport, I went to Unabridged to find an older memoir, which they had. The staff was friendly and happy to help me find a couple of other books. It is not a used bookstore, so most of the books are sold at the publisher’s price, however there were a fair amount of books on sale for $6.00-8.00, particularly in the LGBT section.

I was just stopping in to kill some time. I liked the layout and selection of the store. They had a sizeable section dedicated to LGBTQ books, which I liked, even though I'm not interested in those much. I also liked the anti-trump/anti-fascism signs sprinkled through the store. I don't live in the neighborhood, but if I happen to be around there again, I would definitely revisit this store.

After brunch down the street my wife, son, and I took a walk into Unabridged for the first time. The knowledgeable staff helped us immediately and the way the store is laid out really gives a welcoming feeling. My favorite bookstore in all of Chicago! The indie/small press selections, LGBTQ section, bargain books, and staff recommendations cards are enough to keep me coming in regularly - but where Unabridged really shines is their stellar staff! I ordered a book that wasn’t in stock and shipment was delayed due to a snowstorm. The store called me and apologized (it was beyond their control, not even their fault) and offered a discount for my inconvenience. It’s customer service like that that’ll keep me as a customer for life. A true gem that deserves your business.

Visiting Chicago and this shop came up in a search for used books. I visited and discovered this is NOT a used book shop! Hope this info helps someone out. I did a quick look around the store and will say their children's book selection is impressive. Many beautiful choices.

This is my favorite neighborhood bookstore in the city, even though I don't live in the neighborhood anymore. Their staff picks are so radically different (and far more interesting) than you'd ever see at Barnes and Noble or any chain bookstore. Also, their travel section (in the basement) is HUGE. Great place to find your lonely planet guides and then some.

Unabridged Bookstore is a fabulous treasure trove of books nestled on Broadway in East Lakeview. When I lived around the corner, I must have stopped in 2 to 4 times per week... did I mention I have a very darling dog, and Unabridged passes out dog treats? Well they do, and my dog has a perfect memory... Alas, we are not living full time in Chicago anymore, we live where there are zero independent book stores, wahh! But when we come home to visit Chicago, we ALWAYS stop at Unabridged. There are staff recommendation cards on lots of the books, which is great, I have discovered many a treasure through these recommendations. If they don't have a book you eant they can order it for you. Don't miss the travel section in the lower level, great resources, I have bought and used many books for my travels purchased from Unabridged. Great selection of kids books too. Love this place!!

Great independent bookstore. Unlike Amazon and the big box stores, it lets educated people make their own decisions about what they should read. It doesn't censor like Amazon, Walmart, etc. If they dont have it, they happily order it for you. They encourage browsing. The staff reviews books and their reviews are posted conspicuously. Great travel section in basement, fantastic cooking section, LGBT section--which reflects the neighborhood. They are actively involved with Nettelhorst public school across the street. They are active members of the communtiy. Your money spent there impacts the local community, rather than a bunch of nameless, faceless investors in New Jersey, or California. Buy local. Support your friendly, neighborhood bookstore!
