Reviews of Taylor Books
I love the selection of coffee that they have in Taylor Books. Even during the seasonal months, they routinely change out their specialty drinks to fit the mood of the season. The baristas are super nice. The coffee shop itself has a great atmosphere and the bookstore always has local events going on. Come check them out!
Very cute bookstore, complete with coffee shop, small art gallery and live music this past Friday night. I loved the cortado and have found myself back there multiple times. Very cozy, warm up with some coffee and a book!
Nice place. Huge variety of books by genre etc. Coffeeshop inside is nice as well. They have thematic areas. F.e. Ukrainian writers' shelves.
This spot has an awesome selection of books, and a lovely little children's section with blocks and a small table. The coffee is tucked away a bit and has its own seating area. The coffee was okay, they serve it all in to-go cups which isn't my favorite. I heard a lot of people ordering their lattes, so maybe those are better than the cappuccino I got. We got tiramisu as well which was actually really good! It looks like an awesome place to cozy in with a good book, or to get a gift! Wish we had more time to browse!
Very cool and unique place! Hippy and nice vibes from this place... Grabe a cup of coffee and a good book in this nice warm place during this cold season... I just love it... highly recommend coming here ... trust me the coffee is so good!!
This place has everything. There was live music on the night I stopped in. It has a bar and coffee counter, an organized book selection a used book area, interesting gifts and unique cards.
Super great local find! Stopped over night and we're looking for some good coffee. Stumbled across this gem and were NOT disappointed. Amazing coffee. Great atmosphere. Super friendly staff. Awesome selection of books!
Just visited from out of town. Loved this book store! Wonderful collection of books, pretty diverse. Not much of a self help section but the rest of the collection kind of makes up for it. Lots of character and charm! Coffee is delish. I love that they also have an area for art! Good vibes and cozy atmosphere.
For $13 I got a Sandwich, Chips, Cookie, and Coffee Blast. The books and art are super quirky and cute. Employers are nice as well.
Order the “Peanut Butter Blast” and you will not regret it. This is one of the best coffee shakes/smoothies that I have ever had in my life.
Very downtown-ish flavor. Nice quaint area of the city. Brick sidewalks. With café inside. Nice shop but pricing system is hard to make sense of. No pricing shown anywhere. Need to bring books to counter to get prices.
Across from Ellen’s Homemade Ice Cream. Mmm.
Awesome bookstore with attached cafe! Plenty of spots to just sit and read, has a cool arts exhibit space for local artists too. Also sells great art pens and a wide selection of cards. Love their used books section where you can buy with used book credits.
Their baked goods, especially the carrot cake, are great! When they have live music the bands are always good make sure you get there early because seating is limited for the amount of people who come and standing room isn't really possible here. This is a nice place to have a coffee or draft beer with friends or alone.
This was honestly one of the places I was most excited to see when we came to visit Charleston. It did not disappoint!
It has a relaxing atmosphere. No one rushed you or looked at you like you needed to leave. We enjoyed exploring the books and art; the coffee smelled amazing!
If I lived nearby this would definitely be a local hangout for me. 😁
Quite an interesting place. They are always friendly and willing to assist you. Their coffee and food is great. Old fashioned hospitality. If you haven't been there then you need to put it on your list. You won't be disappointed.
One of the best coffees I had in town but also one of the worst customer services. Was in town for a few days and heard great things about the place and the coffee and did not disappoint at all. Amazing atmosphere, amazing selection of art and books but the lady helping me at the bar really stood out being very rude to me and my friend and when I decided to go back the next day the same happened. Will definitely be back when in town again but hopefully won’t be having her as my barista.
Taylor Books was amazing because not only do they have books, they have a wonderful cozy cafe inside! The coffee is fantastic and the desserts were out of this world good, especially the Tiramisu!!
Taylor's one of my favorite downtown places. Last Friday purchased 3 slices of that chocolate cake and took it to tellers st Chase downtown Bank. I 🤔 it's important to introduce businesses to other businesses if they don't have the time to check out the business and what they have to offer 😊👍 …
We love to stop in this bookstore every time we visit Charleston. The selection of books is great but the selection of handcrafted pottery and other goods is out of this world. So fun to browse in this store.
This is not only a unique book store its also a well known coffee place that Charlestonians hang out.
I would say this is the most popular place for people to visit with friends and have a cuppa.
The decor is unique, inviting and a great atmosphere for all individuals.
There are many items other than books and coffee at Taylors.
Such as baked goods, lunch items, greeting cards and fantastic finger puppets.
If your in the Charleston area don’t miss out on this Book and Coffee Haven.
Taylor Books is definitely the best bookstore and café in downtown Charleston, West Virginia. It occupies a large groundfloor space at 226 Capitol Street, and the popular place is divided into three distinct areas: books, café and the art gallery. You can also find and purchase any of numerous gift items, magazines and greeting cards.
This bookstore attracts a steady flow of residents, tourists, students and workers from area businesses. On Fridays and Saturdays in the evenings Taylor Books’ theater shows films, downstairs, and several times each month talks and lectures are given.
You may order delicious freshly made soups, chili, sandwiches, salads, saumon fumé and various homemade cakes. Beers and domestic wines are also sold.
The several seating areas at Taylor Books include a comfortable leather sofa and chair, a curved booth, a few benches and ten small round tables with chairs. There is also a small wooden conference table with several chairs where some people sit while enjoying their food and drinks and using their laptop computer, iPad or telephone.
The WiFi is always strong and reliable. You will find people come here daily to eat, enjoy various coffees and teas, and work or relax. If you order coffee in a mug, you can request two or three free refills. Why go to a Starbucks when a Taylor Books is so much better?
My brother frequents Taylor Books every other day. He meets and greets his friends and various acquaintances as well as the always-polite, efficient and friendly staff. It is a very popular place downtown and you will meet all sorts of interesting people.
Honestly, I do not know what I would have done while visiting Charleston for five weeks without this wonderful place. It is a real treasure. Thank God (and the English owner) for Taylor Books! I do not usually give five stars for my reviews, but Taylor Books really deserves to be rated five stars. It is truly a rare gem.
Cute little book store with a little cafe. They also have a small used book section. The staff is super friendly. They didn't have the book I was looking for, but was more than willing to look it up and offered to order it for me.
Cute niche book store! I stumbled across it my first day walking Capitol Street, and had to come back the next day to sit and enjoy the environment. I had a delicious gingerbread latte with almond milk and used the wifi to get some work done. I also didn't realize they have an art section to the left. Overall, I loved how nice and cozy this place felt.
A very warm and welcoming bookstore where we came every morning for coffee while we painted the Greetings from Charleston mural a block away. We filled up our rewards card but didn’t get a chance to use it!
Hey!
I spent 2 days working from the coffee shop/bookshop while traveling! I just LOVE the place.
The location is really good, the staff is super friendly and helpful, my oat milk cappuccino was the perfect temperature and tasty.
The vibe, in general, is positive and open-minded!
Please stop by for a coffee or grab-and-go snack.
p.s. If you ever consider adding some healthy, no added sugar, and fewer calories sweets, please let me know. I’ll be happy to partner.
Good luck 🤍
Visiting Charleston after 5+ years away. Taylor's was just how I remembered, but better! Great kids area, my son and I browsed and played with blocks for a little while, he thought it was magical in there. Must visit!
I was a little surprised to see that I hadn’t already written a review of Taylor Books since it’s one of my favorite places in Charleston. This is a great independent bookstore with a nice selection of new and used books, interesting art installations, and a solid coffee bar.
A classy place that represents the best of Charleston. They also agreed to be a drop off site for my Christmas Sock Drive for the homeless!!! Am so excited to be part of something positive this season!!!
Best book store in West Virginia! Staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and the selection is excellent (and ever-changing). Plus great coffee and art to boot!
Best coffee shop I've been to in the area. It's hard to find a good macchiato, and they nailed theirs. I'll be back!
I absolutely love this place, it has been a go to for me for the last several years… but the furry friends are getting out of hand. They need to exterminate or just set more traps.. I know it’s an old building but this is definitely a deterrent.
such a cute space. the atmosphere was so laid back. this place has live music, desserts, wine, beer, and even flights! they also have a small art museum AND an underground movie theater. it's really the best bookstore I've ever been in.
Loved this place. The art, cards, and book selection is awesome! Love all the WV and inclusive items.
Beautiful old store with new and old books, coffee, live music and very interesting people.
Amazing selection of books, art, and pottery. Also a great gypsy jazz group played on the night we visited.
What an asset to Charleston. Check out this independent book store with the lovely aroma of coffee filling your senses. I love going here.
Great coffee, great atmosphere. Best coffee I have had for a while now. I had a cappuccino and a latte with almond milk.
Very nice vibe in here. Nice lighting and music.
Atmosphere paints a picture of home. Quaint, cozy, artsy and welcoming. Wonderful coffee drinks, pastries, cakes, salads, and sandwiches. Art and books selection is lovely. <3
Cozy little bookshop in a cute part of town. Best London Fog I've ever had.
Of all of the places I love to visit in Charleston, this is my favorite. This is a really cool place to hang out, to discover a new reading passion, just ask the knowledgeable clerks, they know their stuff, or to simply de stress... and let me tell you, the atmosphere WILL de-stress you.
To put it simply: Art, books, coffee and community. This place will not leave you wanting.
We stumbled across this store Sat evening after dinner nearby. We loved the ambiance and quaintness of the place overall. It was very comfortable and inviting. Many people were sitting in the coffee shop side listening to live music too. How many bookstores have that!? Heck many bars/restaurants can't figure that out.
They had a surprisingly good selection of books, but also magazines, cards, and even an art gallery area, with items for sale.
It was a nice way to close out the evening. I'm always happy to see small businesses doing well that have found they're niche. Congrats and go check this store out.
This is my favorite bookstore in all of Charleston. The art gallery is always packed with new and beautiful local art. The coffee shop is incredible and the selection of books is ideal.
This is my all-time favorite bookstore and coffee shop. The staff has always been friendly, the coffee is good, there is always a fun mix of odds and ends for sale, and I've gotten some great books from their selections. Their gallery also always has amazing exhibits so be sure to check it out as well
Neat little place with live music some nights.
Always a fun place to go and check out there books and other exotic things. Coffees are pretty good, not the best, but definitely worth trying. I've always loved this place.
Enjoy the books sand gift selections. Coffee was good but staff was very slow and not super nice
Best place ever. They have live music nearly every night. It is a super relaxing scene. I have also come here to get a cup of coffee and just read. Everytime I come it has been an enjoyable relaxing experience.
The woman behind the counter was extremely knowledgeable and helpful.
I love the creaky floors and the smell.
10/10 ambience. 10/10 eclecticism. 7/10 quantity (selfishly wishing there were more books).
This place is always worth stopping in for a peruse and a hot drink. I love it here.
Very cozy bookstore with a nice coffee shop on the side. The inside of the store is much larger than it appears and even houses a small art gallery.
The book selection is great, nothing like at big chain stores, and the cafe has the best coffee around! I go as often as I can. They are inclusive, eclectic and really fun.
One of the most lively book stores I have ever been to. It was packed in a very good way. They had large on sale and used sections, with a mix of award-winning and local authors. Very much recommend stopping by if you like books and are in the area.
I have never went there, placed my order and turned around and left. I enjoy the walking around the store looking at the paintings they have on the walls. Book readers new to the Charleston area, I strongly suggest you become familiar with Taylor Books!
Pros:
Great art available in the store with a lot of unique gift ideas. I adored looking through the little art gallery.
Coffee bar was nice, made an amazing London Fog pretty quickly.
Prices are reasonable.
Cons:
Homeless people camping out in bathroom. Had to get staff involved. Bathroom was filthy and smelled horrendous. Toothpaste all over the sink, tons of trash including clothing, filthy toilet. If I hadn’t been ready to burst I would have gone elsewhere.
Inattentive front counter staff, lack of transparent pricing in some of the art.
Flavors taken off coffee menu with no explanation, no signage. Drove all the way out there for a specific drink they make and it was no longer offered.
Uneven flooring with no signage or warnings, I have two knees that need replacement and I almost tripped more than once.
I would definitely go back, but will be more cautious and use the bathroom elsewhere.
Obsessed with this place!! My favorite, and my 3yr old daughter's favorite too.
Currently sitting here in this cute cafe, book store and art gallery! All of the employees wear masks, which is especially important while preparing drinks and food. Atmosphere is relaxed & clean. Lattes could be a little stronger, but they taste great!
It is a large area with a coffee shop, sitting areas, art gallery, and a huge selection of books. We were there on a Sunday and the place stayed busy.
Ordered a coffee to go and they forgot my order & I had to go up and ask where it was. Not apologetic about the mistake and I waited 30 min overall for it. It was not tasty and I ended up throwing it away.
Do not recommend.
Very eclectic here and not my cup of tea. Was driving thru and will never come here again. They wanted $40 for a stuffed animal, which is outrageous!
Surely, better options are available. Hard to find parking too so be prepared if you do go.
A great place to go for new or used books, coffee and tea, and a variety of live music on the weekend. Wonderful pastries too. Try the chocolate scones.
A place to find good used books otherwise nothing special the only thing I see when I go there is racist looking white people who think they are supreme when they are not.
Adorable bookstore with a really good in-store coffee spot.
This was the salvation for the historic renovated Charleston city center on a Sunday morning at 1030. Came to this area for a bakery breakfast that was closed on Sunday and Monday, and 80% of the other stores were also closed. But inside this very large bookstore w lots of magazines also was a welcome coffee shop w accomplished barista, baked items and quiche which we enjoyed thoroughly.
Great bookstore and coffee shop. Tasty snacks and drinks, nice staff.
You walk in to the smell of coffee and books. How much bliss do you need? If the answer is " yes" then go here.
Taylor Books is a cute lil bookstore + coffee. They’ve got some dope bumper stickers and the interior is cool.
Happened to need to kill some time in Charleston and so I stopped by this bookstore. It was very cute! They have a café (that serves excellent mocha frappuccino/blasts), a little pottery studio, and of course the book store. Loved that it was an independent bookstore and had a great selection of regional books. If you are ever in Charleston, you should check out this place.
Great place to hang out and read. Cafe is great too. The art exhibition in the back changes from time to time as well. Also a theater downstairs for WV Independent films!
Super cute book store! Love the setup of the place with the books on display and little places to sit and read. My husband and I bought 2 horoscope books at what I consider a good price (less than $20). Would definitely recommend if you're looking for an interesting read. There were so many books I would have loved to buy!
This is a cool book store where you can browse and buy both new and used books. They also has a nice coffee shop and movie theater as well. I didn't try them, but the cakes at the coffee shop look positively sinful.
I've been coming on and off the Taylor books for years I love the entertainment on the weekends Friday and Saturday night and it's a great place to chill and drink coffee or whatever and have great conversations that people you know
The atmosphere here is wonderful! They offer books, handmade original cards( you won't find anywhere else!), pens, childrens items, stickers, nic-naks, and the cutest little cafe corner you will ever find! The staff is super helpful, and always willing to help you search. It's a great place to shop!
I love this place. Great books, coffee and atmosphere
Great combo book store/ coffee shop/ art studio. Book selection is good they can order you anything just have patience. Some really nice pottery that is made by local artists and also wooden items too. They have nice mixed media paintings and other art pieces you can buy. Located in a nice older part of town. The coffee shop had alot of comfy seating. The coffee was well done and the vegetable quiche was nice. A good place to go for Sunday lazy day. Parking is not easy so you might have to walk a bit. Great place definitely go here.
Very quaint little place! We're from out of town & went for a walk downtown area (found Pies & Pints also!); stopped in for a cup of coffee, found a book & then relaxed / read for a little bit. Great coffee! Plenty of street parking- jus keep track of your time on the meter, as the parking authority issues parking tickets quickly (we were over by 5'ish min ... and one can't pay with cash). If we lived in Charleston - we would certainly patronize this bookstore!
This place is a staple of Charleston. If you haven't been, you are missing out. This is a phenomenal art gallery, bookshop and cafe all in one. Great place to shop for gifts or just hang out and enjoy a cup of Joe while soaking in the eclectic atmosphere.
I love a good bookstore. This place always has a wonderful selection. But my favorite parts are the coffee shop and the art. The coffee shop has delightful beverages and pastries. And the art on display is incredibly unique and most of it is reasonably priced. This is a stop we always make when in Charleston.
Nice bookstore with a comfortable feel. Good mix of new and pre-owned books from children's to adult.
Enjoyed a cup of coffee while reading.
Best in the city for books and coffee and last time I was there they served baklava. Love the atmosphere and even when the homeless come in they add to the city seen I remember back in the the day when pubk rock was in and they sat reading enjoying a coffee and a book with 12 inch liberty spikes and bondage pants .love this book store .
Wonderful little shop. Excellent book selection. Love the gallery in the back. Great place for an out of towner to feel safe.
This book store was such a gem! The had a perfectly curated selection and lovely atmosphere. Their section on Appalachia was a unique find, and offered some rare and exciting options. Beyond their books, their stationary and art offerings were delightful and complemented their excellent book selection.
Books, art displays and a cafe. This is one of the best places in town to find something unique or the latest best seller. Best of all you can enjoy your purchase while enjoying the cafe's offerings in a warm and comfortable environment. A must for any visitor or tourist of the capital city.
Great atmosphere, in addition to wide selection of books, there is art to peruse and great espresso drinks, code and teas.
Great coffee and great baked goods.
Atmosphere is great! Has live music on the weekends, great drinks and baked goods, and the book store area is very clean and organized. A very great locally owned book store and coffee shop. It also has an art exhibit area, featuring many different styles of unique and interesting artistry and sculptures.
The only complaint I have is that multiple times I have gone there, and most times the tables in the coffee shop are somewhat dirty and sticky. Other than that, it's a wonderful and popular place to be. Staff are also relaxed and seem to enjoy working there, which adds to the ambiance of the place.
Best bookstore in West Virginia. This Independent is an Oasis in a sea of chaos. Wonderful selection, great pastries and drinks, an art house and platform for music and spoken word. A great place to spend an evening
My home away from home! Love the used book section.
Fun place! Great selection of books and the store has a small art gallery in it. Had brunch and did some shopping with a friend and had great time. Really nice vibe and good coffee. They sell wine and cider too so that was also a plus :)
I get a good drink every now and then here. Great book selection and you can find some gems now and again.
Have to say on don't come to Charleston, WV very much but stopped in Taylor Books to see Sasha Collette play and the atmosphere was awesome. The dark roast coffee I had was delicious and very aromatic. I also enjoyed a strawberry banana smoothie and a seven layer cookie. I enjoyed it all and they carry many periodicals and books including some local writers. Stop in if you are ever in town. Highly recommend.
Best coffee in downtown Charleston, hands down.
I use the Cafe mostly and the food and coffee is awesome. I really enjoy talking to the baristas, and if you bring your own Coffee Thermos or Mug they will fill it for the price of a small :) I would recommend any of their daily soups, and my favorite scone is the cheese and dill. This is a great little shop. Charleston wouldn't be the same without them.
Beloved by many, a must-see stop in the capital city. Cool stuff to buy, great book recs, and good cafè vibes. Come here!
Great coffee, wonderful scones, nice artwork & fun atmosphere!
This place is a hidden 💎 gem! Though not for the locals, they are very aware of how lucky they are to have it! So many options and something for everyone! Scones, a great cup of coffee, art, and gifts! It's a must to visit! …
Great local coffee shop, relaxing comfortable location. Many good books.
Friendly cozy environment. Great coffee, sweets and savories. Excellent place to meet up with friends for conversation or solo for reading. Music most Friday and Saturday evenings. BONUS- very nice selection of reasonable priced wine and local craft beer
Nice book store with all the necesary. Check the art gallery have some cool stuff.
Nice place. Coffee was good
I've never been to Taylor Books, though I've lived 41 of my 45 years in Charleston (I don't like trying to park downtown). I'm glad I went though. They have a large selection of books and a little art gallery. I went for their open-mic night and listened to some wonderful poets, storytellers, a musician, and a comic to cap off the evening. Had a lovely time and will definitely be back...when I feel brave enough to face parking downtown again.
The food and coffee is wonderful as well as the atmosphere! My only complaint is the wobly tables that make not spilling your coffee a great challenge. There are three metal tables that are pretty sound, but other than that, be careful to not suddenly rest your hands on the table! Spilling the drink is a bit discouraging, otherwise, I could give 5 stars!
We spend a night in Charleston on our trips from NC to Ohio. We always start our second travel day with a stop at Taylor Books for coffee and to shop. The cafe is excellent with tasty drinks at a good price. The store has a nice selection of books, gifts, and stationery. I love being able to support an independent store like this.
We visit here often. Great little store. Books-new & used, art, trinkets, snacks and drinks, sitting area, and a cool fish tank.
Wonderfully charming local book shop and cafe!
Taylor Books is an awesome spot to grab a coffee, tea, beer or wine (depending on the tone of day) and peruse their varied selection of critically acclaimed authors and titles as well as many publications by local authors or about WV related topics. Many evenings you'll find live (mostly acoustic) music in the cafe, which is always a treat.
When you stop in, don't forget to check out the art gallery connected to the book store on the opposite side of the cafe! It showcases many of the area's best local artists.
Taylor books is a special place in Charleston. It's an independent bookstore, a coffee house, an art gallery, and an underground (literally!) cinema. It's the heart and soul of Charleston's thriving central business district.
What a fun find on our way home from Massachusetts to Texas. This is a combination coffee house, book store and an art gallery. The staff was friendly and helpful. We enjoyed looking at all the different books (both new and used) throughout the store. One employee had a Texas connection (he was wearing a Texas State sweatshirt) which made for fun conversation. If you are looking for a fun place to visit, this is the place.
Cute bookshop with new, used, and super cheap sections. They have a coffee shop that I haven't tried but smells amazing. But the really neat thing is the art show that changes out often on one side of the store. Friendly staff.
Great atmosphere. This is much more than just a bookstore. They have new and used books, of course, but they also have a theater, an art gallery, and a coffee shop. The people here are laid back and make it a wonderful place to spend some time downtown.
One of the best independent bookstores I've had the pleasure of being in recently. The ambiance is all old-school and hardwood, the selection is healthy and laid out in a tasteful manner-there is a pretty nice in-store coffee shop along with an art gallery and underground single-screen movie theater that plays independent films. Prices vary for the books, knick-knacks, and art so depending on what it is can be cheap or fairly high. And the people working there are ridiculously helpful and pleasant so if you're ever in town should definitely stop by and walk on through👍🏾 Oh, and they use old paper bags like the book stores from when I was a kid to put your books in😊
I love Taylor Books. I'm there almost every weekend. The coffee is good and they offer a variety of teas as well. Wine is also an option at Taylor.
When you walk in there is a magazine shelf to the right with a wide variety of magazines. The smell of books is everywhere. Down the hall and to the left is a small room usually exhibiting local art. To the right is a small sitting area and the coffee bar. A dessert display tempts you with a few goodies.
In the back is a used book store within a book store where you can get a nice read at a discount or turn in your own books for credit on used books you may not have read.
Most weekend nights there is live music from local musicians. It's a great place to hang, chill or just get some good coffee.
There is one big glaring problem though, which is why I rate it a 4. If you are a wheelchair user there is no accessible bathroom and the aisles although navigable can be a little difficult especially if you use a manual wheelchair.
I love love love this bookstore. It has a chill hipster vibe. A lot to choose from and ask questions about. It has a place to show local crafts and very helpful staff, whom are friendly and nice. I was assisted with no problem and did not have to wait no time. Thanks y'all I would definitely recommend it to anyone
One of my favorite places in Charleston! You get a little bit of everything all in one store.
This place is amazing. You wouldn't expect this place to be so cool but man was is lively in there on a Friday night which I also wasn't expecting... they have live music on fridays and Saturdays and plenty of seating up front. They had quite a dee delicious beers on tap and wine for their patrons to enjoy in addition to coffee and some delicious looking food options.
This place is pretty large also in addition to books and magazines I noticed a small art gallery as well it was a pleasant surprise to be at this gem my first time in charelston! Looking forward to going back!
Nice, locally-owned bookstore offering a variety of magazines, fiction and nonfiction books, juvenile literature and regional West Virginia and Appalachian works. There's also a small art gallery that hosts exhibits and book and gallery talks, a coffee and wine counter, and a nice lounge area for enjoying coffee, reading and the occasional musical group.
My all time favorite local book store! Coffee shop, local arts and nice selection of books. Plan to spend some time there as it's a great place to cozy up to some coffee and a book!
My dog enjoyed her first bookstore! It felt cozy exactly how a bookstore should be. The only missed opportunity was they didn't sell dog treats at the cafe but do allow pups in the store.
Everything you could want in an independently owned bookstore. Beyond books there is local art, live music and a small movie theater. They serve beer and wine in addition to coffee. In the heart of the Charleston, WV's historical downtown. Don't miss Ellen's ice cream just across the street!
Pretty awesome independent book store. It has a coffee shop and a cool art/knickknack section. The back of the store is full of inexpensive used books. My favorite section is probably the kids books by local authors. awesome for making kids proud of their Appalachian heritage.
My favorite place to visit in Charleston. This is a great place to study, and the coffee is great. Another great feature is the live music. They serve beer and wine as well, so grabbing a drink and listening to the live music is a perfect weekend activity.
A great place to relax and enjoy a book or to grab a quick cup of coffee on your way to the office. Taylor Books offers a wide range of books and magazines as well as local art work and a coffee shop menu. The atmosphere is laid back and the store is the defacto center of the Capitol Street business district. If you're visiting Charleston for the first time, I highly suggest going by Taylor's and taking a look around.
Taylor Books is a completely unique experience. An icon on modern day Downtown Charleston, WV.
It is the whole package, for a visit that is guaranteed to satisfy.
Taylor books has something for everyone.
From a comprehensive bookstore, including both new and used items.. as well as a full service coffee bar with espresso, and sweet treats, as well as other food including a soup/salad of the day.
Also, an eclectic and avant-garde art gallery, art courses in pottery, etc.
Children's Story Hour*
Open Mic Night*
Live music on the weekend nights*
I've been patronizingTaylor books for almost 19 years, and I still look forward to every visit.
Managed by a well-versed, amenable gentleman named 'Dan', staffed by several engaging, courteous, and considerate people who always exhibit great customer service and tolerance to a fault.
*these events are currently on hold due to covid-19 concerns.
I give Taylor Books the highest of ratings, you should make it a point to stop in and see it for yourself.
Sincerely,
Dave Reese.
Truly a cornerstone of our community, Taylors offers a wonderful selection of new books, magazines, notebooks, pencils, as well as an expansive used books section. The cafe is always humming and for good reason! Truly my "third space" in Charleston.
Amazing place💖 beautiful books.. Amazing coffee. And desserts are sooo good!!💖 …
Very friendly staff. Both in the cafe and the bookstore. What makes a rainy evening better than a hot mocha, good music and a warm atmosphere. A good place for meet ups with people or just working.
Really matches the town's slogan: "hip, historic, almost heaven." Interesting books, art shows, inexpensive second-hand books in the back, and a cool coffee shop. If you go to Charleston, you have to stop here.
The atmosphere in Taylor Books is great. In this age of Amazon, it's so nice to see a physical book store thrive - at least I hope they're thriving.
The atmosphere in the store is so cozy and welcoming, the staff is very friendly, and the coffee and baked goods are delicious.
For such a small town, Taylor has a great selection of magazines and slightly reduced selection of newspapers.
Nevertheless, as I said at the top, it's great to have a book store where you can walk in and put your hands on a book. It obviously can't compare to the selection available at Amazon but I think a store like Taylor continues to be important and I support them as much as I can.
Hands down one of my favorite places in Charleston, and may be my favorite bookstore ever. They have a wonderful selection of books, and I enjoy their staff picks and art section as well. The people who work there are nice and helpful. The shop itself has a hip ambiance and is located on Capitol Street which one of WV's most historic and eclectic areas with great restaurants such as Pies and Pints, Aldelphia, and Ellen's Ice Cream. They have a coffee shop which also now serves their own beer, and the piano player and brunch on Sunday are a nice touch. I would definitely recommend anyone to stop by and support this amazing local business!
Delightful atmosphere, warm and inviting staff. Music is always intriguing. Great selection of literature in most if not all genres. Regularly displays local art in the gallery.
Multifaceted book store with events, food, beer and well organized new and used books.
It's fine, the food is good. Service is what youd expect - a lot of angsty hipsters talking loudly and self-consciously about things they likely borrowed from Tumblr. Support local businesses and try not to get too annoyed at the 20-somethings vying for the coolest and woke-est while they make your coffee and roll their eyes when you ask what the hell the cutesy names of the drinks mean 🤷♀️ You know what you're in for.
Relaxed atmosphere, - no one rushing you. Good variety of new books at fair prices. Also used books at discounted prices. Helpful staff. Fair coffee, but chai is weak.
Cute little bookstore and cafe, but not a great coworking space due to lack of outlets and high traffic.
Very good selection. Nice coffee bar. What's not to like.
Exceptionally fun place! came here everyday of our vacation to enjoy live music, tasty food and drink, and peruse literature. Helpful, kind, and spirited staff.
I love Bagel, Cream Cheese, Lox for an early breakfast. With a Lemon Square and a CRAZY WHITE GIRL, Or Emerald Isle. Their White Hot Cocoas are delicious. Also Milky Way Blast(cold with whipped cream)for a summer afternoon pick me up. And Wildberry Smoothies
This is such a hidden gem. I could spend hours.
A Charleston institution - awesome coffee drinks, legit scones and muffins baked fresh every day, good soups, too. Chill. Curated book selection, used books, art gallery and sales, even an indie movie theatre. Taylor is awesome!
Taylor Books is definitely one of those legit independent book stores. As in, across the country, there are book stores that held out against the Barnes & Noble / Borders expansion, and the hold out helped to preserve what feels like real literary culture. It is evident in lots of different sections of the store. I have a great deal of respect for Taylor Books and the book sellers and buyers who work there.
My -1 star is really only about the poetry section. Three years ago, the poetry section was really interesting. I could browse, and I could find surprises among the selection. Something happened, though, as this last year, I don't find any surprises. Poetry might not be the best thing to judge a book store by. Alas, that's typically my biggest interest.
I grew up going to this bookstore and I always come back whenever I'm in Charleston. They offer a great selection of books and I love their section that features Appalachian authors. You can also always find great deals in their used books section.
Awesome place in downtown Charleston to visit. The coffee is good. There is a good selection of new books. And used books are a bit of a treasure hunt, which makes for a little adventure.
This place has the best selection of books for the best prices. Plus, they have a coffee shop right in the store. You can shoot and read, or listen to music, and have a coffee without having to go to different places. I'd recommend this place to everyone (and I do).
This spot is worth your time. Good selection of books, a killer coffee shop and a gallery of local pottery and ceramics. Enjoyed browsing, nice vibe.
Great selection of books, felt extremely cosy, smelled like heaven, had fun art, apparently also a theater, but it was closed when I visited. Highly recommend
Love this place! Very cozy and welcoming. I try to visit every time I'm in Charleston. Great place to relax with a coffee.
Love Taylor books! Great Indie bookstore in downtown Charleston. Art Gallery, used book section, great new book section. Coffee shop, pastries and homemade scones. Brunch on the weekends with mimosas. Local craft beers available as well as wine by the glass and bottle. Live music on the weekends. Pottery classes available. It has everything!
A lovely book store and coffee shop. They have a mix of the newer books and older ones. The staff was friendly and the prices were fair. If I lived closer I would definitely make this a regular stop.
Always a stop for us when visiting Charleston. Highly recommend getting a Chia while your there. Don't forget to check out the art side of the shop.
Great local bookstore and cafe. I always go here to work on my masters assignments. Plus the lical art and the underground theater! Just such a greta vibe.
It's a relaxing atmosphere to meet up with friends and have a cup of coffee or tea. Some evenings there is live entertainment and, of course, there is also a wide selection of books and magazines.
Taylor books is a great place to stop in and relax. They have a large selection of books and a cozy coffee bar with some baked goods as well. They have an inviting and calming atmosphere.
Great place! Just as pricey though as starbucks for the coffee and food. Amazing selection of books and there is an art gallery! Great to take the kids to.
This is my favorite place in Charleston, hands down. Café, new and used books organized well, art from local artisans, entertainment and lectures, all flowing together harmoniously. What more could I ask for? I miss it greatly when I am not in the area.
Amazing atmosphere! Love the combination of bookstore, coffee shop, art gallery and performances space. Whenever I visit Charleston WV I make a point to visit this place.
Love this bookstore. Nice selection of new and used in a charming location. (but my latte was lukewarm....)
Small store with a fabulous book selection. They also have a a beautiful selection of WV artisans.. Great coffee and dessert offerings too.
Book store + coffee shop. Milky way latte was delicious and the staff were friendly. They forgot to call out my drink but it was still piping hot and they were apologetic anyway. Going back soon for sure.
Did a book signing there in July and was thrilled with the space, the gallery and the staff. Excellent latte, and the baked goods were very fresh and tasty. Hidden gem in the middle of Charleston.
Hip little book store supporting West Virginia local authors, artists, and coffee! They have book readings and workshops on occasion and I hope the bohemian appeal keeps this place open because book stores seem to be in trouble these days with other reading options becoming much cheaper :/
The writing scratched on the bathroom wall is a little more clever than the average...
When you walk in, the sights, sounds, & smells are enchanting. From the cozy nooks to the nostalgic aroma of books, Taylor Books is a captivating experience, engaging your imagination, cogitation, and aspiration.
Visit Taylor Books and be transported to another world, via books, pottery, art, and drinks.
I love this coffee house, book store right in downtown Charleston! Quaint and cozy with charm oozing out of its walls.
Lovely book shop! A little coffee shop makes it the perfect place to spend a rainy afternoon! Places like this are getting rare, so i love to support them whenever i can!
Nice staff, beautiful atmosphere, and organized used books. This establishment will definitely make you feel warm and welcome with its well-brewed coffee and friendly company.
Locally owned for decades, Taylor books offers books by local West Virginia authors, best sellers and unique finds. The venue hosts local musicians and also features an art gallery that showcases Charleaton's most talented artists.
The coffee shop is top-not, and it also offers West Virginia craft beer on tap. Bring a growler because you'll want to take some home.
The baked good are homemade daily by the owner using traditional english recipes.
This is a must-visit destination in Charleston, West Virginia.
Such a great store! If I lived here, they'd get so much of my money! Great, somewhat curated selection. Cuddy and inviting staff. Knowledgeable and friendly staff. A total gem.
I love the feeling this place gives me.. very inviting and cozy..
Unique selection of cards and novelty items, well laid out and clean. Nice used book section. Very nice art/potery varieties!
Great local coffee shop with an amazing vibe and atmosphere. Live music most Friday and Saturday nights. Be sure to check out the discounted book section for some interesting gems.
Great place to stop by and have a coffee, beer or whatever. They also have great cakes and pies. The art gallery and theater are cool. Oh yeah, books
Proper bookshop with a great coffee house and locally brewed craft beer to boot. Friendly staff, a loyal customer base and a lovely fish tank. What else do you need?
A great bookstore, art gallery, music venue, movie theater, coffee shop, and bar. The audience is always very supportive at open mic night.
We are so fortunate to have this wonderful community gathering place. They support a wide variety of different art forms. You might hear local music, an author speak or just enjoy browsing.
This place is quiet, charming and really nice to be there. Quick and pleasant service with great products, (books and coffee) perfect cocktail. I can stay there for hours.
Warm setting downtown. Wife can get coffee I can order craft beer. Wide variety of reading material. The staff are readers. It's a locally owned shop ... downtown. It is not BOM!
Love Taylor Books! The WV section is my favorite
Taylor Books is a grand place to meet a friend and have a coffee or to buy a trinket for a family member back home. I completely enjoyed my time at Taylor Books, and I would recommend it to everyone who enjoys old style service.
Books, original art, coffee - everything you could want in a bookstore and more! The employees are all great - helpful and very friendly! There is even a used book section of you want to pick one up on the cheap!
Great vibe! Nice coffee selection, book store with places to sit and read, some very cool novelties and an art gallery to peruse and purchase.
Amazing selection and great prices. Going back soon.
Great local bookstore and coffee shop. We went twice during our most recent weekend visit to Charleston.
One of my favorite book stores! Wonderful staff, lovely music nights, delicious drinks and food, amazing selection of books, magazines, art, and even toys!
Great variety of new and used books and art. Pleasant way to spend a Saturday morning. Once you have your reading material grab some coffee and a treat.
A bastion of culture. There is always art. You can get beverages and snacks. New and used books for all ages. Events often. It can get crowded, but the staff is friendly and the place is cozy.
Very clean, staff was very knowledgeable, close eye to the very smallest details were taken by staff to ensure prompt and courteous interactions
Really nice atmosphere, joint together with a coffeehouse/cafe. Had really good clam chowder there before playing a show at Blvd Tavern one night.
Great book shop with new and used books, games and a coffee bar.
Great local business, with an unparalleled selection of magazines. Interesting books are plentiful. The cafe side has good service with a variety of options.
The atmosphere was great in there, the food was delicious. I couldn't pick a better play to hang out when you have free time. 5 stars most definitely.
Love this place...so interesting..great selection of books and gift items👏. …
What a sweet spot.
I'm not sure I would have found it but the hotel front desk staff directed me there when I asked for coffee and a bookstore.
They were open at 7am!! Great time hanging out there.
This place is wonderful. Plenty of books, yummy food and drinks. Even art too! Plus the smell of books and coffee. What could get better?
They have a very good variety for a relatively small space. The cafe looks really good, though I didn't get anything there. I would, based on the looks and prices. I dont live in the area, I visit from time to time.
Great place to grab a couple cups of coffee and a good book. Staff is wonderful and very helpful. Check out the used book room. You may be surprised at what you might find.
We stop as often as we can on our trips to Ohio from NC.
Very warm vibe. The live singer made the ambiance so nice
Cute little coffee and book store right downtown! Had an iced coffee and it was delicious. Will definitely come back here to study.
Quite little book store with coffee shop and great selection of books. Highly recommend this place...
Just a beautiful place with a cultured atmosphere tucked away in downtown little Charleston.
Eclectic collections, great coffee and even greater desserts. Local museum is a must to see.
A true Charleston institution! You can't beat the chilled, eclectic vibe in this place. And they make a pretty nice cup of coffee as well.
Great book selection and unique items in a locally owned business. Enjoy a coffee or smoothie and maybe some live music.
A wonderful place to get tons of WV-centric books. A great little coffee shop that (while sometimes pricey) is always top quality. Very bohemian kinda place.
Love Taylor Books! My favorite drink is the frozen milky way with soy milk and light syrup and their quiche is always delish!!
I love the atmosphere. Taylor book has not only new books, but it incorporates used books, local artisans works, as well as, local craft beers and coffee.
Helpful staff (kudos to Dan!), great coffee. A joy to browse in. Hub of the local arts scene. Bring a mask and visit soon!
It's a chill small business spot where you can grab some Java, buy a book, relax in a comfortable chair reading it. Free wifi and lots of great art and quirky knick knacks
This is probably one of the coolest places to hang out. Live music, coffee, books, and they have art in the back! A great place for people who want to relax.

I love the used book selection they have here. Staff were helpful with questions. Had a nice cup of tea in the cafe area, very cozy feel.
