This local book and game store has a surprisingly great selection. I love visiting local bookstores and this one is a nice one. They have a coffee and drinks shop inside as well as many comfy arm chairs to sit and read in. I bought a few new books here and definitely plan on visiting again in the future. Local bookstores like this are the best!

When visiting Black Mountain for a Mission Trip with my church, this was one of our pit stops. Incredibly peaceful place, great selection of books. Went in there again when it was starting to pour rain, their selection of drinks in the back are great enough to make you giggle with happiness. Whether you live in Black Mountain or nearby, this is a must!

My goodness. We were staying in a cabin on Black Mountain, and I stumbled upon this store while driving around looking for somewhere that might have a sketch book for my daughter. What an absolute treasure. The manager and the other staff person were kind, knowledgeable, engaging, and SO helpful. I didn't want to leave!! Wonderful adult and kid book and gift selection, amazing toy and game selection too! And yummy coffee and hot chocolate! I was wondering what type of game I could get for my family. We have completely different strengths and likes, but the woman who helped me had GREAT suggestions and even showed me how to play the games! My kids LOVED the games - we had a blast playing them the next couple nights, and we are still playing them at home. The manager was so warm and engaging and even helped me find some book gems for Christmas gifts. I think this might be my favorite store on Earth. I wish I could have stayed longer. And, I found out they ship! Can't wait to come back!

Such a wonderful store! They have an amazing selection of gifts and books. For someone who loves to read and shop, it's a really fun place to visit when I'm in town! My kids went crazy in the upstairs toy shop, and we found the coolest toys you just don't see everywhere. Of course, we left with some goodies! The puzzle selection is awesome...going to have to hit that up for Christmas. Plus a kind, friendly staff makes for a great experience!

i always describe this place to people as “barnes & noble…but better” because it’s a lovely local business that has so much under one roof! cool gifts, wonderful book selection, toys and other things for children. the staff are all super friendly and knowledgeable about everything in the store. don’t miss this shop!!

First, I have no idea how anyone could give this store a poor review. Second, I've visited Sassafras twice now (we live in Greenville, SC, so a trip to Black Mountain is a TREAT), and I've been enchanted both times. The top floor is a children's wonderland of toys and books, and the bottom floor is, well, my new favorite place on earth. It's jam-packed with wonderful books, book-themed shirts/home decor, and gifts for absolutely everyone. It's a lovely store in an adorable town, and I can't wait to visit again soon!

This store was absolutely incredible. This is the first time I’ve ever left a google review, but I just had to because this store was so cute. It has books, cute little knickknacks, a kiosk for coffee/tea, puzzles, games, and so much more. If you’re in Black Mountain, visiting this store is a must!

I'm embarrassed to say I hadn't been in this building since it was an antique store! I wandered in recently and was amazed. The upstairs is devoted to mostly children's games and books, and is quite a gem. If you want a high quality selection of these products, it is well worth a drive. The lower level includes a coffee bar, bookstore and a wonderful selection of witty gifts. The store is housed in a beautifully rehabbed historic building and features a welcoming and helpful staff - all of which makes for a really enjoyable experience. Dont' miss this treasure!

Been going to Sassafras as a local since it opened. Amazing environment, delicious coffee and treats, wonderful selection of books. I go here to buy gifts for children’s and adult birthdays. I take my kids here on rainy days to look around, get art supplies and find new book series to enjoy. The staff knows our names, and remembers my kids favorite books, giving them updates on authors and genres they love when we walk in. This place is AMAZING. If you are a book lover you should visit our little town JUST for this store.

This store is just plain lovely to be in. It is so well curated with interesting books, gifts, games and toys. I am a local and I love hanging out in the SUPER comfortable chairs and enjoying some coffee (which they serve and is pretty darn good too). I just love it when I get the chance to visit Sassafras. The atmosphere reminds me of a Hallmark movie. Seriously. The great smells of coffee, the sweet, beautiful people, And of course an amazing selection of books. You can also shop for all kinds of unique gifts and toys. I so look forward to my trips to Montreat and Black Mountain for many reasons, but one highlight is that we can spend hours in Sassafras on Sutton! True story! I wander through the books, which I adore! I always find gifts for others, but equally as much for me! They have quaint and quirky gift items. And now, they’ve added an amazing upstairs full of toys and games and baby items! Bliss! The selection is exceptional, the quality of products is reliable, and the ambience is delightful! The staff have always been helpful and personable when engaged. I love Sassafras!!!

Lots of cool items to look at! Some of my favorites were the wooden quote signs and candles. Nice selection of children's books...and seasonal! Bought some unique and cute gifts. The chocolate chip cookie was perfection and the Reese's Hot Cocoa is going to be hard to top!! Staff were friendly and loved how welcoming the owner was. This is exactly why I love to shop local and support small business!

Great, great atmosphere, with a little seating area back by the coffee counter. I can't say I really looked at the books because I was so distracted by the amazing candles. I bought two and I wanted to buy so many more. The displays were all so cute and eye catching and honestly, I'm lucky I got out of there with only the two. Staff were fun and had a great rapport and seemed very into the store, which made me want to stay. Sad I don't live locally so I'll have to wait to come back!

Love this shop!! Great atmosphere, very friendly staff, delicious coffee, and wonderful assortment of gifts, books, and more! I went twice in one day. First to purchase a really great cup of coffee and browse their selection of books and gifts. Then I went back in to purchase a book and browse some more, haha. All the staff, including the owner, were super friendly and helpful. They even offered to help me with my book selection depending on the genre I was looking for. You are definitely missing out if you don’t stop by this shop!

Great selection of quality toys, games, puzzles and books. A tad pricier on certain items but definitely WORTH it for the atmosphere. I am more than happy to pay a little more to support the magic of going to a beautifully crafted, independent toy store, rather than internet shop for a toy with my kiddos. Where’s the magic in ordering a toy off of Amazon? PLUS there’s a cherry tree to climb and coffee to drink and I don’t have to drive to Asheville. 10 stars if I could give it. I love me some Sassafras!

This is one of the most magical toy stores and beautiful book stores you will ever go in. My kiddos go as much as they possibly can. Not only do they love the toys but last week I found my 11 year old in a corner reading a book! If they don’t have something we are looking for they will order it immediately and let us know as soon as it comes in. If the kiddos ride their bikes to town I always know where to find them. Each and every employee goes above and beyond to be helpful and they always say hello as soon as we come through the door. This is a must when visiting Black Mountain!

Sassafras is an example of one of the businesses that makes downtown Black Mountain such a great place to visit. The owners have done a tremendous job of restoring one of the town's most prominent historic buildings and the staff are always friendly and helpful. If you're visiting Black Mountain or a local looking for a special gift for yourself or someone else, I recommend going to Sassafras.
